Sightseeing in San Diego for Seniors

By train, by trolley, by bus - by all means enjoy san diego.

Last year, almost 10% of visitors to San Diego were age 65 and older. The area's popularity with seniors has much to do with its year round ideal temperate and sunny climate. It's also because of the ease of getting around to so many enjoyable attractions, with someone else doing the driving. Without having to navigate, drive, and park, you can enjoy the best of what America's Finest City has to offer on your visit!

Here is a weekend's worth of sightseeing in San Diego for seniors that involves a few good "rides" and minimal walking.

Old Town Trolley

Old Town Trolley offers highlights of the destination and popular visitor attractions while you travel on a comfortable open‐air trolley. Listen to a knowledgeable driver point out landmarks and present the city's history in an informative and humorous manner. You can hop on and off as you please at any of the 11 stops encompassing over 100 points of interest. Seaport Village, Balboa Park, Little Italy and Coronado Island are popular stops for lunch and photos. Be sure to enjoy Old Town, the birthplace of California, with dozens of authentic restaurants, museums, shops and live entertainment including mariachis and dancers. At the Balboa Park stop, you can access the Zoo.

Also within walking distance is Fletcher Cove, a beautiful park right on the beach, with picnic tables and spectacular ocean views.

The Encinitas train station is only one block from its downtown, the heart of everything! Bristling with restaurants, coffee shops and fashion stores, you will love the eclectic look and feel of this popular sea village. Be sure to experience the Self Realization Fellowship Gardens overlooking the ocean - a place of quiet reflection with scenic walkways and tropical flora.

Get off at Carlsbad Village for another vibrant seaside town and more shopping! Restaurants for every palate can be found in the village all within walking distance to the train stop. You might be lucky enough to visit during one of Carlsbad's many street events adding to your enjoyment and choice of gift items.

San Diego Red Trolley

Downtown San Diego is a pedestrian-friendly urban playground for you to explore historic buildings and parks, enjoy shopping and award-winning dining, and experience world-class attractions.

  • Civic Center Plaza Home to the historic Civic Theater where the curtain rises nightly on Broadway shows and more. One block from shopping galore at Horton Plaza. Trolley Lines: Blue & Orange

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

Why San Diego Is the Perfect Vacation Destination for Retirees (Video)

senior travel groups san diego

One of the greatest perks of being retired is the flexibility of your time. Retirees quickly become aware of that benefit when they enjoy empty movie theaters on weekday afternoons, airfare savings on off-peak travel days, and vacations that don’t have to be taken in week-long increments.

For retirees seeking the ideal place to take advantage of their flexible schedule, San Diego offers the option to be active, relaxed, entertained, educated, and more. San Diego’s climate just about guarantees year-round splendid weather for being outdoors. There’s a vibrant downtown, excellent dining, ocean waves, calm bays, as well as cultural and entertainment opportunities. With a range of neighborhoods, lodging (from the best hotels in the city to neighborhood hidden gems), prices, and plenty of free activities, San Diego has it all, and with time to enjoy it at their own pace, retirees can create their perfect vacation.

Nearly everyone who travels to San Diego visits Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo, Mission Beach, downtown, and the many other popular tourist destinations. Their time is usually limited, and although enjoyable, it’s only an introduction to the city and its surroundings. With more flexibility and time, retirees can truly take advantage of all that San Diego has to offer. Here are just a few examples of how a visit to San Diego can fill weeks of adventure and pleasure.

Balboa Park

Chelsea Loren/Travel + Leisure

The Spreckels Organ Pavilion , one of the world’s largest outdoor pipe organs, is wonderful to see, but those who can be there on a Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. will be able to hear its glorious sound for an hour with the weekly free concert. During summer, organ concerts are also held on Monday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30, and on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, Twilight in the Park Summer Concerts at 6:30 p.m. include music from military bands to Dixieland Jazz and salsa.

Performing arts venues in Balboa Park include the Old Globe Theater, Casa del Prado Theater, WorldBeat Center, and Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater. Visitors can check the calendar and plan to see the events of their choice — if their travel schedule is flexible.

At the Spanish Village Art Center , visitors can watch artists at work, seeing demonstrations from the more than 200 painters, metalsmiths, sculptors, jewelry designers, photographers, printmakers, and more. With time to explore, guests can enjoy the art and even take a class in watercolor, ceramics, glass art, or pottery. For fun or perhaps a new hobby, the Art Center is perfect for a day of browsing and learning.

Speaking of hobbies, gardening is a favorite of many retirees, and Balboa Park’s gardens will inspire, educate, and provide pleasure to anyone with or without a green thumb. Nearly twenty different gardens include the Botanical Building , Desert Garden , and California Native Plants .

Balboa Park’s 17 museums cover anthropology, art, aviation, science, technology, history and more, and with time to delve into your interests or to see them all, you’ll have a most rewarding experience. Perfect for retirees with a flexible schedule, the Balboa Park Explorer Pass provides savings—for example, the Multi-Day pass offers admission to 16 participating museums over seven consecutive days for only $57, a saving of around $100.

More than 70 miles of coastline guarantees visitors their perfect experience whether it includes swimming, surfing, bike riding, tide pooling, or just relaxing under an umbrella or building a sand castle. Visitors with enough time can rent a bike and wind along Mission Bay’s 27-mile-long paved path at their own pace or ride along San Diego Bay on the Bayshore Bikeway. Whether it’s for a bracing workout or a casual ride, exploring on two wheels is a great way to see San Diego.

The U.S.S. Midway is a must-see attraction in downtown San Diego. The aircraft carrier is now an interactive museum with flight deck, restored aircraft, flight simulators, and theater. There’s a self-guided tour, but conversations with docents who tell stories and answer questions really bring the visit to life and remind visitors of San Diego’s role as a Navy town.

The Maritime Museum of San Diego displays a collection of historic ships, including the Star of India, the world’s oldest active ship. Book a cruise on one or all of the replicas that include the Californian , the official tall ship of the State of California, and a high speed Swift Boat .

The Cabrillo National Monument on Point Loma commemorates the exploration of San Diego Bay by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo who arrived in 1542 in his flagship, the San Salvador. Take time for a ranger-led or self-guided tour to learn about the area’s history and roles in both World Wars. Enjoy the spectacular views and in winter, perhaps a whale or two will swim by on their annual migration to Baja California.

Senior Friendly Day Trips Southern California

Senior-Friendly Southern California Day Trips. Below are some great day trips for seniors. These trips offer a slightly slower pace and plenty of places to sit and relax while taking in the scenery. Popular options for seniors include bus tours or a train journey aboard Amtrak. I selected all these destinations for seniors to escape their daily routine and enjoy an adventure. I hope every reader enjoys them, no matter their age.

Old Towne Orange

Take a Stroll Old Towne Orange

In Orange County, California, Old Town District is the perfect destination for a weekend day trip when all you want to do is wander. Old Town Orange will not disappoint, with bric-a-brac antique stores tucked neatly between cozy sidewalk restaurants and bubbling fountains. Most of the district’s points of interest are near the central plaza, which has plenty of free street parking.

Sherman Gardens Corona Del Mar Day Trip

Smell the Roses Sherman Gardens

Everything from exotic orchids to a California pepper tree is on display. Desert cactus, herbs, and, of course, a fantastic and super-fragrant Rose Garden are lovingly nurtured by the gardeners on staff. The on-site Café Jardin Restaurant offers handmade crepes, freshly baked pastries, and other goodies to make stopping at the gardens worthwhile. Sherman Gardens is easily walkable, and plenty of places to sit and enjoy nature.

Pacific Surfliner Train in California

Take a Trip on the Surfliner

A trip on the Pacific Surfliner can be as simple as a few miles to San Diego or Santa Barbara. Almost every train station along the route has an exciting attraction within walking distance. Popular stops include Mission San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente Pier, Old Town San Diego, and State Street Santa Barbara. Onboard snack bars and bathrooms make the train convenient for older and younger passengers.

Mission San Juan Capistrano Day Trip

Visit Mission San Juan Capistrano

Mission Capistrano is a good choice for a senior-friendly day trip. Tour buses and almost hourly train service make getting to the mission easy. Explore the mission’s beautiful gardens and historic buildings. In the spring, swallows migrate thousands of miles from their winter homes to San Juan Capistrano. There are plenty of nearby dining and shopping opportunities. If you still have some energy to burn off after the mission, I highly recommend visiting the nearby Los Rios Historic District .

Olvera Street Los Angeles Day Trip

Historic Olvera Street, Downtown Los Angeles

Olvera Street is adjacent to Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.  Olvera Street is a landmark that retains its authentic charm and captures the essence of what LA used to look like years ago. This area of Los Angeles features 27 historic buildings with a traditional Mexican-style plaza, including the Avila Adobe, constructed in 1818, and the former home to Francisco Avila, one of the city’s first mayors. Olvera Street is a popular stop for many tour buses. This trip would be best taken during the week as Olvera Street can get very crowded on weekends and holidays.

Heritage Valley Day Trip

Take a Sunday Drive Heritage Valley

State Route 126 connects Santa Clarita to Ventura. The highway follows the banks of the Santa Clara River through Heritage Valley and makes a beautiful place for a Sunday Drive. Plenty of areas of interest include Bennets Honey Farm and the historic town of Santa Paula. So make sure you allow plenty of time to take them all in. Unfortunaltly, the Filmore Railway has been closed for several years and no longer offers train excursions.

Richard Nixion Library

President Richard Nixon Library

Take a tour of the original farmhouse where President Nixon was born, just a few steps away from his final resting place. Inside the Library, the main gallery is where you can explore the history and the exhibits. The library features nearly 70 significant exhibitions, including a replica of President Nixon’s Oval Office and an extensive display of Nixon’s historic trip to China. A fantastic garden with a large reflection pool at the Library is ideal for sitting, relaxing, and enjoying the view.

Graber Olive House

Step Back in Time Graber Olive House

Graber Olive House specializes in tree-ripened olives, a somewhat time-consuming process but a superb way to bring out the best in these green and black beauties. The olives come from the family ranch located in the San Joaquin Valley. Several hundred tons of olives are trucked to the historic Ontario Olive House each year to be canned or processed into olive oil at gift shops and tours. Hours are limited, so check with their website before you go. Also in the area is Logan’s Candy Shop , which has been hand-making candy since 1933 and is well worth a look.

Los Angeles Farmers Market Day Trip

Lunch at Original Farmers Market

Since 1934, a historic landmark has been on the corner of Third and Fairfax. It’s called the Farmers’ Market, and it’s a fascinating place to spend the day. The market stores offer a remarkable selection of fresh fruits, candy, baked goods, homemade ice cream, wines, meats, and poultry. Parking is scarce here, so arriving early and planning a weekday visit is best. Take advantage of your retirement and visit during the week while most people work.

Automobile Driving Museum Vintage Car Rides

Take a Ride Auto Driving Museum

The Automobile Driving Museum has a remarkable, rotating collection of nearly 150 classic, antique, and historic cars, all with retro color schemes, snazzy hood ornaments, and unique taillights. Still, perhaps its claim to fame is that on Sundays, guests are given a rare opportunity to drive in a piece of history as they are whisked around in one of several pristine classic vintage cars from the museum’s collection. Even if you do not visit on a car ride day, this fun museum is an excellent place to see and learn about vintage vehicles.

Birch Aquarium

Discover Sea Life Birch Aquarium

The Birch Aquarium is located on a hilltop site that provides a panoramic view of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus just off the Pacific Ocean. Birch Aquarium is a mid-size facility with most of the displays indoors. One of the highlights of a trip to the aquarium is a 70,000-gallon kelp tank forest. If children are along on this trip, there is a very popular Tide Pool Plaza where they can touch and learn about the tide-pool animals. There is a bit of a walk from the parking lot to the Aquarium entrance, but once you get there, all the exhibits are on one level.

Casa Romantica San Clemente California

Casa Romantic San Clemente California

Casa Romantica is perched on a cliff overlooking the San Clemente Pier in South Orange County. This historic home was built in 1927 by the City of San Clemente, Ole Hanson. The 5-acre Casa Romantica estate was one of the first buildings in the new Spanish Village By The Sea. Due to a landslide, most of the garden area is closed, but visitors can still explore the interior rooms of the mansion. There is also a revolving art show and, on select weekends, various events.

Seal Beach

Enjoy the Seaside at Seal Beach

Home to the second-longest wooden pier in the United States, Seal Beach blends a rustic old surf town and a modern upscale cultural community. Of course, the main attraction that lures visitors to this quaint seaside town is the beach with its soft sand and sunshine. A trip to Seal Beach would not be complete without a visit to the Red Car Museum aboard Car No. 1734, a restored Pacific Electric Railway car on the corner of Main and Electric downtown.

Bates Nut Farm

Bring Home Some Treats Bates Nut Farm

Bates Nut Farm is tucked away in an oak-filled valley near Valley Center, California, and makes a great family day trip. The 100-acre Farm was established in 1921 when Gilbert and Beatrice Bates purchased the property. Today, the Bates Nut Farm offers a wide selection of nuts, dried fruit, candies, plus much more.

Santa Ana Zoo in Santa Ana, California

Visit The Santa Ana Zoo

If you’re looking for a zoo that’s not too big and requires less walking, the Santa Ana Zoo is just perfect for you. The zoo has many exhibits, some of which could easily fit into a larger zoo. There’s also a lovely old-fashioned carousel, a fun mini-train that’s easily accessible, a delightful butterfly walk-through area, and a snack shop near the entrance. You can take your grandkids along for a fun family outing at the Santa Ana Zoo .

Tips on Tipping

People ask us all the time about tipping. “Should we?” and “How much?” While we at Kindred Tours want to make it clear that we do not require tips, they are certainly appreciated by our tour guides and drivers when the service meets or exceeds your expectations.

As to the amounts, use your own judgment. Recommendations are all over the map. USA Today recommends $3 to $5 per person for half-day trips, $10 for a full-day excursion, and $1  to $2 for a one or two hour tour. On overnight tours, calculate the per-day tip and multiply it by the number of days, and add $1 to $2 per person for loading and unloading bags.

Trip Advisor suggests that most major Tour Operators are suggesting $4 – $5.00 per day per passenger. At this rate you should budget $8 – $10.00 per day if traveling as a couple. The guideline is per person not per couple. Tips to the driver usually fall within the same range.

Again, these are just guidelines and we want to repeat that they are not required. Give a tip if you think one is warranted.

Can I arrange a Kindred Tour for my group?

Absolutely  and there are so many great ways that we can work together.  select a tour from our newsletter or website, and we’ll take care of all the details—providing marketing materials, sending a representative to speak with your group, and collecting payments.  if you need help selecting a tour, give us a call.  and you’re not limited to our current selection of tours.  we’ll work hard to customize or plan a tour specifically for your group.  just give us a call, and we’ll get started., do you have bathrooms on your buses, we get this one a lot  but you needn’t worry about bathroom breaks.  we make a stop for  coffee and doughnuts early into  every tour, usually at a roadside rest-area, and always conveniently located near a restroom.  we make regular pit stops through the day, and our drivers brag that they know every public restroom in the american southwest.  ask any kindred traveler and they’ll say that they all had concerns about bathroom breaks heading into their first tour that were quickly forgotten., how do i know if the activity level is right for me, kindred travelers range in age from 50 to over 100 years old, an enormous span that encompasses a huge range of abilities.  we work hard every day to provide great tours to meet the needs and the interests of our entire group.  if  you are unsure if a tour is right for you, we invite you to call the office  to discuss your concerns.  we’re happy to provide you with more detail about a tour and answer your questions.  we’ll work with you to find your perfect tour., can i pay a single supplement, if you really feel that you’d like to have your own hotel room, consider paying a single supplement.  a single supplement is just the additional 50% on the hotel room expense that you would have shared with a roommate., can you find me a roommate, we get asked this question a lot, and the answer is always yes  don’t let the fact that you are single keep you from signing up for a tour.  the majority of people who travel with kindred tours are single.  they sign up for a tour, we assign them a roommate, and they often go on to become lifelong friends.  we have decades of success matching roommates., how do i pay for my tour, use your credit card when you sign-up online, or when you call the office to make a reservation.  we do not keep your card credit information on file.  you can also sign up for a tour, receive confirmation of your reservation from the office, and then pop a check into the mail.  most reservations for extended tours require a $100 deposit, with the balance to be paid closer to the date of the tour., what if the trip is full, we’ll always encourage you to use the wait list  when a trip fills, and it can happen very quickly, we begin a wait list. if there’s enough participation to fill a second bus, we’ll let you know.  we’ll also check with our wait list, should we have any cancellations, fielding those requests in the order in which they were received., how do i sign up for a tour, check out online for one-stop shopping, or call the office to make a reservation.  you may reach our voicemail, after all we are in the travel business, but leave us a message and we’ll always call you back to confirm.  , where do i meet the van, mesa: mesa doubletree hotel 1011 w . holmes ave mesa, az 85210.

Very good trip. Tour guide and coach driver were excellent. Accommodations were great. I would recommend this trip to others. Except, I would not recommend going to the trip sponsored dinner at the Happy Girl Coffee House in Monterey. The food was just awful in my opinion. Best place for dinner that night would at one of the seafood restaurants at be Fisherman's Warf located right in back of the hotel.
