2024 Pennsylvania Sports Business Conference

The Department of Finance and Economics is pleased to recognize two economics majors who shared the results of their research completed as part of the econometrics course sequence in economics at the 2024 Pennsylvania Sports Business Conference , “Creating the Gold Standard.” This conference was held at the Hadley Union Building on the IUP main campus on Friday, April 12. The conference featured presentations from various individuals involved across the sports industry.

John Sieber (BA, Economics) and Myca Torreance (BS, Finance with an Economics double major) were announced as the co-recipients of 2024 Research Award at the Pennsylvania Sports Business Conference. According to its web page, the Pennsylvania Sports Business Conference Research Award recognizes students for “their contributions to furthering the industry through research” based on the quality of the research and the relevance of the topic.

Their research paper, "Shooting for Success: An Econometric Analysis of NBA Salaries," investigates the multifaceted landscape of National Basketball Association player salaries by examining an array of factors that shape compensation. At the heart of the analysis lie individual player performance metrics, which serve as the bedrock upon which salary negotiations are built. However, beyond the more statistical measures, experience and tenure emerge as pivotal factors shaping salary dynamics within the NBA. Drawing upon a cross-sectional sample of 381 players during the 2022–23 season and building on existing literature, this investigation employs the Ordinary Least Squares Regression method to understand the relationship between player performance, experience, and remuneration. Metrics such as points scored, rebounds (both offensive and defensive), assists, defensive statistics (including blocks), and three-point shooting accuracy are well known for their direct impact on player value.

According to Sieber, "We chose this topic because we both have an interest in basketball, specifically the NBA, and there are not too many studies done on salaries for the NBA. The experience Myca and I had at the PSBC was incredible. We got to listen to representatives for the Penguins, Pirates, Seven Springs, and more! It was an awesome chance to connect with these special individuals and pick their brain a little bit. For our presentation, it was great to have a larger crowd than I was used to, and helped me become a better public speaker and presenter in the future for my professional career."

Lehigh Valley senator, PPL president tour Penn College labs

Published 04.18.2024

Photos by Cindy D. Meixel, writer/editor-Penn College News

university of pennsylvania admissions tours

Sen. Nick Miller, a Democrat whose 14th senatorial district comprises portions of Lehigh and Northampton counties, visited Pennsylvania College of Technology Thursday, taking in a variety of instructional areas along with members of his staff, college administrators, and state Sen. Gene Yaw (R-23), who chairs the Penn College Board of Directors, and his staff. Coincidentally, Miller’s campus call overlapped with a visit by Christine M. Martin, president of PPL Electric Utilities, and other PPL employees. (PPL Corporation is based in Allentown, Miller’s home and district office location.) The two groups merged for the same tour, covering construction, electrical, machining, welding, collision repair and automated manufacturing labs. Along the way, they learned about the Clean Energy Center, architecture & sustainable design majors, and the upcoming Baja SAE international competition.  Earlier in the day, Miller and his entourage stopped at the college’s Schneebeli Earth Science Center near Allenwood for a glimpse into the diesel technology, electric power generation, forestry and horticulture majors before continuing onto the main campus in Williamsport.  Miller represents one of the fastest-growing regions of the state, home to hundreds of Penn College alumni and an array of the college’s industry partners, including PPL, B. Braun Medical Inc., Lehigh Valley Health Network and St. Luke’s University Health Network. Based on its economic development projects, the Lehigh Valley is ranked #1 in the U.S. among mid-sized markets (population 200,000 to 1 million) by Site Selection magazine and is the 56th largest manufacturing market in the U.S. based on economic output of $8.1 billion in 2022. Home to well-known global and national brands, Lehigh Valley has 15,000 employers and a 1.7 million labor force. Among the Penn College contingent guiding the visitors across the campuses were President Michael J. Reed; Loni N. Kline, senior vice president for college relations; Patrick Marty, chief government and international relations officer; Alison A. Diehl, executive director of the Clean Energy Center; Kyle A. Smith, senior executive director of college relations; Bradley M. Webb, dean of engineering technologies; and Justin W. Beishline, assistant dean of diesel technologies and natural resources. Also joining was Mike Stefan, vice president for government relations, Penn State. Stefan is the newest member of the Penn College Board of Directors.
