Mile ‘high’ club: The Travel Agency to open new dispensary in Downtown Brooklyn

The Travel Agency: A Cannabis Store — formerly named Union Square Travel Agency, after its first location, which opened in Manhattan last spring — is preparing to open a pop-up shop at 122 Flatbush Ave. as it builds out a permanent location right next door.

According to its founders, The Travel Agency will be the first licensed dispensary in New York to open a second location, and it will be among the first legal dispensaries in Brooklyn, which saw its first-ever legal recreational marijuana store open in Gravesend last month.

the travel agency exterior

Like the Union Square location, The Travel Agency pop-up will carry a “curated selection of premium products,” including vapes, flower, edibles and pre-rolls.

The store will be staffed by roughly 60 highly-trained “budtenders,” founder Arana Hankin-Biggers told Brooklyn Paper, who will help educate customers about their products, choose what’s right for them, and use it responsibly.

“We get a lot of repeat customers, folks who kind of know what they want and get in and get out,” she said. “But our budtenders are always super eager and very passionate about the industry and about the products, so they’re always super willing and eager to talk to customers who want to spend more time learning about the various different products that they carry.”

The company strives to carry BIPOC and women-owned brands, Hankin-Biggers said, as a significant part of its mission is to lift up people who were disproportionately impacted by marijuana prohibition.

As part of that mission, The Travel Agency has partnered with justice-impacted people in both of its locations. When New York State legalized recreational marijuana, it was on the condition that the first wave of licenses would be granted to people who had been harmed by the War on Drugs.

the travel agency ipads

In Downtown Brooklyn, the company is working with GMDSS LLC, which is owned by a Brooklynite with a prior cannabis conviction. GMDSS LLC holds the dispensary license from the state, and is the official owner of the store.

That partnership in Brooklyn will reflect The Travel Agency’s current partnership with The Doe Fund at their Manhattan store, Hankin-Biggers said — more than half of the store’s profits are directed toward The Doe Fund, according to the company’s website.

The Doe Fund provides transitional housing, job training, and other resources to formerly-incarcerated and homeless men, including some who first entered the justice system on marijuana-related charges at a young age, Hankin-Biggers said.

The Travel Agency also works closely with the Cannabis Justice and Equity Initiative , which was founded by Doe Fund graduate Terrence Coffie.

CJEI recently launched a cannabis training program for formerly incarcerated people, and The Travel Agency supported the first 25-person cohort – and hired a number of graduates to work in Union Square, Hankin-Biggers said. They will be recruiting more people from the program to work in Brooklyn.

The partnership with GMDSS LLC came as The Travel Agency held tours of its dispensary and worked to support cannabis license holders, Hankin-Biggers said. GMDSS LLC had its license, which was awarded in May, but needed support.

The Travel Agency will work out of its pop-up location — which is set to open on Jan. 29 — for about three months before the permanent location is finished.

products in the travel agency

New York City is still flooded with gray-market stores illegally selling cannabis products, but Hankin-Biggers said that while convincing shoppers to switch to a legal dispensary isn’t always easy, she feels it’s worth it.

That’s in part because of the people employed at the stores — The Travel Agency does not require former retail or dispensary training, but does require a paid weeklong training on the history of cannabis and how it impacts the body, so the budtenders have a thorough knowledge of the products.

There are also the products themselves, she added, which are tightly regulated and thoroughly labeled, so shoppers know what they’re getting – whether they’re experienced marijuana users or first-timers.

“It’s almost really impossible to have a bad experience when you’re shopping legal, because the product is a lot safer,” Hankin-Biggers said. “I think the cannabis you can get at the legal dispensaries is not going to give you paranoia, or make you high for hours and hours. It’s just a really calm and happy high.”

What's not to like? Shop online, order for pickup...just like Target. And like the early popularity of Target, you'll always spend more than you planned.

Go to Housingworks instead. I walked in yesterday, most of the employees acted like a customer asking a budtender for help was an annoyance, then I spoke to someone stating I needed a potent Indica vape for body pain, I was suggested something that came in a ladies compact case with a mirror that was 1/4th .5 grams of a regular vape. And after trying the vape, it was extremely weak and a waste of money. This whole experience after having traveled to dispensaries in Chicago and Boston and had awesome experiences there, was just a waste. You'd be better off calling old dealers you dealt with in the 90s than dealing with this establishment.

First time after a few years walking by, decided to try and was disappointed. As thc edible enthusiast, this dispensary lacks in potency. The staff were cold, not friendly except for one person at the resister with waves, he had more enthusiasm. The space is nondescript so you'll have to keep an eye out for security at entrance. It's small, minimalist (which I like), with an aesthetic display of some items. I don't smoke anymore so I am mainly reviewing edibles, not the buds. Furthermore, you order via tablets or by phone preorder. There's descriptions of each item listed. I ordered the indica tea bag's and blueberry gummies. Once you order via tablet/pre order, you zoom through the line to clerk for order purchase cash or credit. Glad there's options. I tried the gummies, wasn't potent, felt I wasted money. The tea bag's, which were cheaper, had the most potency. It's quick once 30-60 minutes pass, give or take. Definitely helps with sleep better than the gummies. I probably might not return here but if I do, it's just for the tea.

Hi Vincent, Thank you for giving us a chance and taking the time to share your experience. We're glad to hear that you found our minimalist space and the ordering process to your liking. However, we're truly sorry to hear that our edibles did not meet your expectations in terms of potency, and that your interaction with our staff was less warm than you deserved, except for the enthusiastic service from our team member at the register. Your feedback is invaluable to us as we strive to improve. We're continuously working on expanding our selection to ensure we meet the diverse needs and preferences of our customers, including those looking for high-potency options. Your comments about the gummies and the tea have been noted, and we will look into our product offerings to ensure they meet the high standards our customers expect. We appreciate your honesty and would love the opportunity to serve you again, perhaps with an updated range that better meets your needs. If you're open to it, please feel free to reach out to me directly at 646-777-7420 ext 122. We're committed to improving and would value any further feedback or suggestions you might have. Thank you again for your visit and for your constructive review. We hope to have the chance to impress you in the future. Safe Travels

Well... best way to describe this place is magical. I would say it's like the Apple Store of cannabis products. The spaceship-like cases make everything look tempting. You can pre-order stuff or browse and order. Lots of folks to help you out with ordering stuff on iPads. They'll give you good ideas too depending on your needs! Pretty cool. You gotta check it out!

Union Square Travel Agency...First off the name deff throws you off but it's an interesting name for this type of store. I, like some of my friends, call it the Apple store for cannabis products. I am not one who is into cannabis related products really, but it just so happens that stopping here is just that cool and I actually get to learn some things about cannabis. This store is clean and layed out well. Seeing some of the products in the glass cases and reading information on the walls really also makes this place what it is. Everyone who works here is very helpful as I have visited here a few times now. Products here seem a bit on the pricier side but I do not know what they usually cost elsewhere. But what I have been told the products they sell here are good and worth the price point. They have tablets where you order your products from and then you pick them up at the register area. Highly recommend stopping in if you are in the market for any of these products or if you just want to see the atmosphere of it. It is not like other cannabis stores around NYC that you may pass by.

A quick, streamlined process to get quality strands in large quantities. All the product was tasty and high caliber -- plus the workers were happy to explain why certain items were their favorites, helping make our decisions easier. We visited a lot of dispensaries throughout our trip, but this was hands down the most memorable.

Less than smart concept. You have to order from an iPad which is like Taco Bell. The bud tenders have low energy and it's over price. Makes me miss my dealer.

Bought a .3 pen and when I opened it the oil looked halfway gone. I went back to the store to point this out but they told me that it was good. I've been here before and purchased this same pen a couple of times and the oil almost reaches the top. When I get home and look at it under good lighting it looks halfway done. Below is a photo of what a new pen looks like compared to what I purchased. I'm so disappointed and upset that nothing was done when I pointed this out . I guess I won't be recommending this store any longer.

Overcharged and mishandled over the phone. I bought what I thought was an acapulco gold 0.35g disposable (as listed on the website and kiosks) and only got a 0.3g. The actual cart was also only half full. When I called, the person who picked up was very rude and claimed it was half full because it would typically hold 0.5 (the cart is too small to hold that much) and did nothing to help me with my actual problem, the fact that I purchased $50 for 0.3g instead of 0.35g like I bought (yes I know 0.05g is nothing, but with this being so overpriced I'm going to make sure I'm getting what I paid for.). Honestly, I used to go to travel agency regularly and was a huge fan, but this experience was pretty subpar and the person who picked up my call was genuinely just rude. Take your business elsewhere.

Huge selection, excellent quality, blazing fast service. Minimal, futuristic clean interior. Just the way it should be. Up to par with top stores around the country.

I was here today and the team was awesome, very knowledgeable, and we got along great. It’s important to realize the benefits this store has on the community so I hope they keep up the good work.

Favorite spot. Amazing customer service, literally every staff member is super helpful and friendly! I will say it’s a love-hate relationship - I love that they’re close to me but hate that they’re close to me LOL 🤣. Visit ASAP and stop wasting time!
