All Eyes on Tahiti: An Olympic Wave Tahiti to Host 2024 Olympic Surfing Competition

“For those not familiar with the latest craze to invade the sun-drenched Pacific coast of Southern California, here is a definition of “surfing”– a water sport in which the participant stands on a floating slab of wood, resembling an ironing board in both size and shape, and attempts to remain perpendicular while being hurtled toward the shore at a rather frightening rate of speed on the crest of a huge wave (especially recommended for teen-agers and all others without the slightest regard for either life or limb ).” ~ Sleeve notes from Surfin’ Safari, 1962; Beach Boys

Oh those darling crooners of 60’s surf culture sure did know how to poke a little fun at the emerging popularity of the sport that gave their music its enduring allure. All tongue-in-cheek humor aside, surfing’s standing on the global stage has come a long way from Gidget movies and Spicoli’s character in Fast Times at Ridgemont High . So much so that on July 27, 2024, the sport will make its second Olympic appearance, turning all eyes from the XXXIII Olympiad’s host city of Paris to a legendary wave called Teahupo’o (cho-poo) in Tahiti.

The Birthplace of Surfing

To understand the profound significance of the Olympic surfing competition taking place here, we have to go back to the origins of the sport. It’s likely that the “riding of waves” has existed since humans began swimming in the ocean. But experts generally agree that surfing dates back to 12th century Polynesia where cave paintings illustrate ancient versions of people surfing. 

Throughout all Polynesia, surfing was a way of life with a deep religious significance including ceremonies to seek the goodwill of the gods (talk to any modern-day surfer and their rhapsodies of the perfect wave is a near-religious experience for them too!). Everybody surfed—men, women, children, kings—and there were strict rules regulating who could surf which spot (this possessive aspect of surfing still lingers, so it’s always a good idea to share a friendly la orana —hello—when dropping in). There was always a hierarchy in the sport, with the best boards reserved for royalty, the ari’i (chiefs), and members of the ruling class. 

The Tahitians and Samoans would also use surfing as a way to train their warriors for battle. How so, you ask? Try paddling out over the soaring shore breaks to patiently wait for the perfect swell. Before you can catch a wave, you have to get to the wave, and that requires significant strength and endurance. Surfing is the oldest sport practiced in Tahiti and remains an essential part of their ancestral traditions, preserving a cultural bond between people and the ocean.

First Wave to Global Phenomenon 

Surf historians credit English botanist Joseph Banks as the first person to spot someone surfing in Tahiti while sailing aboard the Endeavour in 1769 under the command of Captain James Cook. Recalling the experience, Cook would go on to record in his journal: “I could not help concluding that this man felt the most supreme pleasure while he was driven on so fast and so smoothly by the sea.”

It's impossible to talk about the history of surfing without mentioning Duke Kahanamoku, born in Hawaii in 1890 and renowned as the father of modern surfing. A five-time swimming medalist in the 1912, 1920, and 1924 Olympics, “The Duke,” as he was known, had a deep passion for the waves and became the best surfer of his generation. At the time, surfing was almost unheard of outside of Hawaii and he embarked on a global tour to introduce “the sport of kings” to the world.

Today, as Tahitian locals Kauli Vasst and Vahine Fierro—joined by Carissa Moore (2021 Olympic gold medalist), Caroline Marks, Caity Simmers, Griffin Colapinto, and John John Florence representing the United States—prepare to ride Teahupo’o in search of gold, they can thank The Duke for bringing their sport to the world stage over 100 years ago.

About Teahupo'o

Located on the southwestern shores of Tahiti, Teahupo’o is a small village known for its legendary surf breaks. But don’t let the dreamy vision of waves lapping on the shore of paradise fool you, for this is no ordinary wave. In fact, its name quite literally translates to “sever the head” or “place of skulls.” A little extreme you say? In the words of Tahitian pro surfer Michel Bourez, Teahupo’o “is one of the best and scariest waves you could ever surf.” Local water patrol and surfer Aresene Harehoe adds that “the wave is really dangerous, you know, you can die out there.”

The first person to ride TChops, or Chopes as the wave is known, was Tahitian surfer Thierry Vernaudon who with a few other locals christened Teahupo'o as a surf spot in 1985. It is considered the most famous reef break in the world and a “must-surf” for experienced surfers. Teahupo'o is renowned for its powerful, glassy waves that average 10 to 15 feet (sometimes in excess of 25 feet) and for the consistent number of barrels it delivers. Barrel riding, known also as tube riding, is considered the holy grail of surfing—when the surfer gets inside the wave and rides through the tube with the goal of being spit out the other side.

Teahupo’o is commonly referred to as the heaviest wave in the world. A heavy wave has a thick lip (the top curl) and a lot of water behind it (more water = more power). The heaviness of the wave is created because of the change in depth on the sea floor. About 160 feet beyond the shallow reef, the sea floor drops to more than 50 feet. This means the swells coming towards shore change from very deep water to extremely shallow water over a short distance in a short period of time. This causes the wave to rise up over the reef before crashing down.

Best Time To Visit Tahiti And Bora Bora

French Polynesia gets amazing weather all year—some islands enjoy a whopping 3,000 hours of sunshine per year. Breezy trade winds and mild temps make Tahiti and French Polynesia an idyllic vacation destination. It can rain every day but rarely rains non-stop for days at a time.

Rainy, Dry And Shoulder Season

The rainy season in the South Pacific is from December to March. It is the best time to cruise Tahiti and Bora Bora if you want a good deal and to avoid thick crowds of sightseers. But it is the worst time for weather, as there’s an increased risk of rainy days.

The best time, weather wise is May to October, which is dry season. It is almost always clear skies and gentle breezes. The downside to the best weather is that the crowds thicken, and the prices rise. July and August are the most popular months to visit Tahiti and Bora Bora.

In April and November, the months between wet and dry season, the weather is drier, but there are still showers. Prices are lower, and it is not as crowded. Tahiti vacations during the shoulder season are the best.

What To Wear In Tahiti

Pack the proper attire to feel cool and comfortable on your Tahiti vacation. The islands are casual and laid-back. For women, cotton sarongs (called pareo), sundresses, shorts and sandals are the daily wear. Men don linen shorts and short-sleeved shirts. Aim for resort-casual, even in fine dining restaurants. Save the cocktail wear for ship Dressy Nights.

The tropical sun in Tahiti and Bora Bora is fierce. Wear sunscreen daily and slather it on periodically, even when there are clouds. Pack a wide-brimmed sunhat and sunglasses.

You’ll live in your swimwear in Tahiti, so bring more than one suit and coverups. Spray on bug repellent, especially when hiking to waterfalls.

The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go: Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 onboard, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.

If you're trying to decide whether you should book a cruise or stay at an all-inclusive resort for your next vacation, there are a lot of factors to consider. Beyond selecting a destination, you'll need to determine what type of experience you're looking for and what's included in the price of each option. After all, there's nothing worse than having a stress-free trip turn into a sticker shock surprise when you review the final bill.

To help, U.S. News compiled a list of questions to consider when comparing cruise versus all-inclusive resort vacations, along with suggested options for both.

What are your travel goals?

When deciding between an all-inclusive resort or a cruise, ask yourself the following questions:

Do I want to explore multiple destinations in one trip?

If your answer is yes, book a cruise . Cruises are a great option when you want to visit several locales in one trip, but aren't concerned with spending a lot of time in any one place. They're also perfect for getting an overview of a region, such as the Caribbean or the Mediterranean . If you want to visit off-the-beaten-path destinations instead of busier, more popular ports, consider itineraries offered by cruise lines with smaller ships that can navigate tighter waterways than larger ocean liners. For example, Windstar Cruises' small ships can visit small Greek islands ; remote Tahitian villages; Alaska's wildlife-filled Inian Islands; and sail the only navigable river in Spain, the Guadalquivir River.

Do I want to stay relax in one place?

If a relaxing land-based experience sounds more your speed, an all-inclusive resort may be a better option. You can spend your time taking advantage of luxurious resort amenities and exploring the surrounding areas. The Grand Velas Riviera Maya in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico , offers family-friendly accommodations and activities, as well as romantic oceanfront suites with plunge pools and spa bathrooms for couples. The resort also has an impressive selection of internationally inspired restaurants and indoor and outdoor bars. During the day, sign up for holistic treatments at the SE Spa by Grand Velas (for an additional fee) or enjoy complimentary water activities like kayaking and snorkeling. You can even explore ancient ruins in nearby Tulum, Mexico , on an off-property excursion.

Still, for some cruisers, the ship itself is the destination. The details of the itinerary don't matter much to them, as they plan to spend most of their time relaxing on board. Big cruise ships and/or new vessels offer seemingly endless dining and entertainment options.

What kind of atmosphere do I want?

If the shrill screams of children playing might bother you, you can easily opt for an adults-only cruise or adults-only all-inclusive resort . Of course, if you're traveling with kids, there's no shortage of kid-friendly cruise ships and all-inclusive family resorts in the Caribbean , Mexico and U.S.

What's included in the price?

Another huge variable is the price you'll pay for a cruise versus all-inclusive resort – and what exactly is covered.

Cruises: Taking a cruise can be a great value , but it's important to note that inexpensive base fares aboard large, mainstream cruise lines can often be misleading. Once you add in additional costs for taxes, fees and port charges; gratuities; stateroom upgrades; specialty dining and beverage packages; excursions; and Wi-Fi access, the total price of your voyage may end up much higher than you expected.

To avoid surprise extra fees throughout your trip, you might want to consider sailing with a luxury line like Viking Ocean Cruises . Although such cruises typically come at a higher price point, the line's fares cover all meals (including specialty dining venues), beer and wine with lunch and dinner, nonalcoholic beverages and bottled water, one shore excursion in each port, onboard Wi-Fi access and more. Also consider cruise deals, which often include last-minute incentives and kids-cruise-free promos .

All-Inclusive Resorts: When it comes to all-inclusive resorts, be sure to research what's included in the nightly rate before you book. Couples-only Sandals Resorts International in the Caribbean offers some of the most inclusive resort pricing setups, with rates covering accommodations, gourmet dining at up to 16 restaurants, snacks, premium wines and liquors, stocked in-room bars, water sports, complimentary golf course greens fees (select resorts), PADI-certified scuba diving (at most properties), entertainment, Wi-Fi access, gratuities and airport transfers. Extra fees apply for spa treatments, local excursions and personalized events, like private dinners on the beach. Other resort brands may not offer such an extensive list of included perks, so be sure to check with the specific property you are interested in. And again – look for available offers when booking. Many all-inclusive resorts offer kids-stay-free promos on a regular basis.

Do you want to drive or fly to your vacation destination?

Before you find yourself sipping umbrella drinks with a good book in hand, you'll have to put in the work of traveling to your destination. It goes without saying that visiting an all-inclusive resort in Mexico or the Caribbean will require an international flight, but you may also need to hop on a plane to reach your chosen cruise ship terminal. Still, many ships sail from popular ports in Florida cities – including Fort Lauderdale , Miami , Tampa and Cape Canaveral (Orlando) – and travelers outside of the Sunshine State can find sailings out of ports in California, Texas, New York and Louisiana. Depending on where you live, you may be able to save yourself a flight (and some money) by driving directly to your embarkation port.

You may also be able to book a stay at an all-inclusive resort (or a property with an all-inclusive option) without traveling too far from home. Florida offers a couple of all-inclusive properties ideal for those who don't want to leave the U.S. Consider Bungalows Key Largo, which caters to travelers 21 and older visiting the Florida Keys. In contrast, some properties across the U.S. offer special packages to create your own all-inclusive experience .

What type of accommodations do you prefer?

Cruise ship cabins can be tight, especially if you're traveling with another person (or an entire family). The good news is that there are plenty of choices when it comes to stateroom sizes and configurations, depending on the cruise line and specific ship you choose. Cabins can be as compact as 100 square feet (in the case of Norwegian Epic 's Studio staterooms) or as vast as 4,443 square feet ( Regent Seven Seas Splendor 's lavish two-bedroom Regent Suite).

If space is important to you, plan to budget for a larger cabin, or one with a veranda. The Azamara Quest 's Club Verandah Staterooms (175 square feet) are not much larger than its Interior Club Staterooms (158 square feet), but the addition of a balcony with extra seating, natural light and outdoor access makes them feel much more roomy. For even more space, consider splurging on a suite, which may also add valuable perks like complimentary specialty dining, laundry service and Wi-Fi access. Some suites are designed with families in mind, such as the Ultimate Family Suite on Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas . The two-story accommodation features an indoor slide, a private game and movie room, a hot tub, ocean views and VIP experiences across the ship.

Back on land, hotel rooms and suites at all-inclusive resorts will typically be more spacious than most cruise ship accommodations, meaning you'll have more square footage to spread out. At the family-friendly all-inclusive Windjammer Landing in Castries, St. Lucia , accommodations run the gamut from 400-square-foot ocean view rooms for two to almost 1,400-square-foot, two-bedroom suites that can accommodate up to six people. The property also boasts a selection of luxury beachfront villas that measure up to 4,200 square feet.

What type of entertainment and dining options do you expect?

Whether you're traveling solo or with a partner and/or friends, decide whether you'd like to party on vacation (think Carnival Cruise Line ) or prefer a more quiet, intimate getaway (such as a river cruise ). Also think about the entertainment and dining options offered by each. On large cruise vessels, like Norwegian Cruise Line 's ships, you can find infinite eateries, Broadway-calibur entertainment and adults-only nightclubs that stay open into the wee hours of the morning. There are also fun-filled activities for younger travelers, like racetracks, laser tag, aqua parks, rock climbing walls and rope courses. Not all these activities will be included in your fare, so you can choose to pay as you go or purchase packages that offer unlimited access. Fitness classes, spa access and entry into adults-only lounge areas may also come with a fee, as can soft drinks and bottled water throughout the day (unless you have a beverage package).

However, smaller, more intimate ships still offer plenty of fun – albeit with fewer crowds. Cruisers can choose from several dining venues, some of which change their menus daily. For example, Azamara changes its menu every evening in the main dining room, Discoveries Restaurant. The eatery always offers classic favorites, such as shrimp cocktail and grilled New York strip steak, but it also includes nightly features, many of which are inspired by the ship's destination. Smaller ships will also typically have a few bars or lounges that host entertainment for more mature, refined audiences (think: piano players or other live music in the evenings), plus theaters that feature a different show each night. Still, you might find fun-loving passengers on the dance floor late at night and DJs spinning karaoke tunes at lounges on the ship.

All-inclusive resorts typically offer a wide range of on-site dining venues, entertainment, activities and amenities as well. For example, the gated 7,000-acre Caso de Campo Resort & Villas in La Romana, Dominican Republic, features three golf courses, an equestrian center, tennis courts, skeet and trap shooting, water sports, complimentary merengue lessons and more. Packages at the resort include accommodations, all meals and beverages and access to most (or all) of these activities.

Resorts may also feature more unique amenities than cruise ships. For example, at Caso de Campo, guests can visit Altos de Chavón. Inspired by a 16th-century Mediterranean village, this impressive replica of a medieval hamlet is home to local artisans and boutiques. There's also an archeological museum, the St. Stanislaus Church and a 5,000-seat amphitheater with panoramic views of the Chavón River and the Caribbean Sea. After dinner at one of the property's signature restaurants, you can hit the nightclubs, or, if you're lucky, catch a concert in the amphitheater. If you'd like to spend an afternoon or two outside of the property, sign up for a resort excursion (additional fees apply). Travelers can explore nearby beaches by catamaran, visit a local cigar-making factory or take an exhilarating zipline ride through the treetops.

With so many variables to consider, choosing between a cruise and an all-inclusive resort can be overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. Too often, travelers are lured by low prices and get frustrated trying to select from the many alternatives. Instead, follow the simple process summarized below.

Once you've figured out your travel goals and have decided between a cruise or an all-inclusive resort, you can narrow down your options. If you don't want to fly, check out the cruises that sail from ports in the U.S., all-inclusive resorts within driving distance, and even properties that offer package deals for meals, beverages and excursions. Also, consider the amount of entertainment and activities you or your family are interested in. If you're not traveling with kids and prefer adult-focused venues and activities, book an adults-only resort or cruise that doesn't cater to families.

If you're hoping to avoid crowds, then you might be happiest on a small ocean voyage or at an intimate property. You should also arrange to travel in the offseason. In addition to fewer people, this time of year offers some of the best-discounted cruise fares or room rates. Offseason varies depending on the destination, but it's typically between June and early September in Florida. If you're headed to a resort in Mexico, the Caribbean or the Bahamas, or if you're considering a Caribbean cruise, prices drop dramatically during hurricane season – June 1 to Nov. 30. Europe is a great option for deals from late fall into early spring. There is also a period right before Christmas and after the New Year holiday that offers a window where you can score discounted pricing before the season gets busy again.

Chef Gemignani has created two pizzas exclusively for Princess, each with an exciting blend of savory flavors and premium ingredients from Soppressata sausage and hot honey to agave pesto and fresh goat cheese. He also provided recipes for three of his signature, award-winning pizzas, further enhancing the line’s position as offering the Best Pizza at Sea.

Chef Gemignani’s recipes will initially debut at Alfredo’s onboard the new Sun Princess, adding to the greatest assembly of culinary experiences at sea, with plans to extend to the rest of the fleet this summer. Chef Gemignani personally trained Princess chefs at his famous Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco and onboard Princess ships, ensuring all five pizzas are thoughtfully prepared to replicate his original, hand-crafted pizzas at sea.

Chef Gemignani is the most decorated pizzaiolo in American history, an award-winning chef, restaurateur, master instructor, philanthropist, founder of Slice House by Tony Gemignani, and author of PIZZA , The Pizza Bible , and The Pursuit of Pizza .
