Initial Impressions

It's been awhile since really something new came out in the ultra-micro racing RC world. The X-Trek Pro is a 1/60th scale, less than 3" long, that packs a surprising number of features, or so the box says.

When you open that box, you get one pretty fancy, pro-style "pistol grip" transmitter and one tiny little car. Surprisingly an extra body is always included, which you can repaint yourself or just keep as a spare in case you, oh I don't know, maybe step on the original? The bodies have a lot of really fine detail and look great, even if they're not quite scale-accurate in proportions. The tires are real rubber, and at least the Subaru WRX World Rally Championship model that I got has actual tread on those tiny tires. Seems like a lot of work went into designing these. A number of different body styles are available, too, not just Subarus.

Preparing to Drive

Like the original ultra-micro RCs, the Tomy Bit Char-G or Hobbico MicroSizers (same thing, different name), or the later, more familiar Radio Shack ZipZaps, the X-Trek pro charges right from the controller. On the back of the controller is a proper charging dock that you just slide the car onto for a short time to juice up the built-in micro battery pack.

This is super-easy and foolproof. I love not having to change batteries in a car, and not having to have a separate charger that takes up the space of 2 power outlets and is always in the way. Being able to charge & go no matter where you are is a big plus.

The car also has a peculiar front bumper preinstalled, plus a spare. It's interesting because there are two vertical pillars on either corner. We'll look at the purpose of this shortly.

What's more, both the transmitter and the car have "tri-band" technology, a 3-position switch that allows you to change the radio frequency. This way, any 3 people can drive any 3 X-Trek Pro's at the same time in the same place, even if they're the exact same car. Nice!

The X-Trek Pro has two trims on the controller, one for steering and one to set neutral throttle trim. This is a true pro-level touch and makes it easy to get the car tuned just right. As soon as you ease onto th throttle, the quality of the X-Trek Pro's electronics shine. It has true digital proportional speed as well as steering! You can go as slow as you want or as fast, or anything in between. Speaking of fast, it's fast . It's really faster than anything this size needs to go, and it has so much power that it can do donuts forever if you crank the steering to one side from a start and jam on the gas. If you want to use a little finesse, the precision digital steering (with the help of the digital trim to get it just right) and grippy tires let you drive any course with whatever skill you have as a driver. For a mere "toy," this is one serious tiny machine.

Now the prt-b50 series adds Bluetooth capabilities that enable data Communication with a smartphone running the pro trek connected app, for the ultimate in ease of use. The quad Sensor system uses compact sensors that make it possible to pack compass, altitude/Barometer, and temperature Measurements, along with an accelerometer that keeps track of your step count, into a compact configuration. Calorie calculations use both step count and altitude information to take upgrades and downgrades into consideration, and calories burned values are recorded by the app. The app automatically records altitude data measured by the watch and route information acquired by a smartphone's GPS, and you can manually plot altitude points along your route using a route log feature. You can also perform A watch button operation to record your current location in memory. Then after you move to a different place, a location indicator will point to the direction and display the distance back to the registered location. This makes it easy to determine the relationship between the two locations, which is an essential capability for outdoor activities. Smartphone connectivity simplifies configuration of settings, and auto time Adjust ensures that time settings are always correct no matter where you happen to be. The watch can also be configured to obtain altitude information using a smartphone's GPS and automatically correct Its own altitude readings. When the watch connects with a phone, it also acquires latitude and longitude information, which is used to calculate the sunrise and sunset times for your current location. On Thursday night Chris Pine, JJ Abrams, Zachary Quinto and Alice Eve attended the red carpet premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness in Moscow, Russia. The start of the film ended up being delayed due to the stars being caught in bad traffic. On top of that it was raining, so those together created a shortened time on the red carpet. But the stars did stop to take pictures with some fans and do some signing.

And some members of the Russian Fan Club put together cards that spelled out "Live Long And Prosper" on one side and "We Love You" on the other. Abrams and his actors commented on them and said he was touched by the gesture.

Next Red Carpets: Berlin and London

Today the Star Trek Into Darkness tour went to Paris, but there was no red carpet, however JJ did meet with the press. On Monday there will be a red carpet premiere in Berlin. And on then they head to London on May 2nd for what is being called the "World Premiere" event, where they will be joined by most of the rest of the main cast (including Benedict Cumberbatch), as well as the other producers.  Following London will be an event in Mexico City and then on to the Hollywood premiere on May 14th.

These publicity junkets must be so tiring, but everyone seems to have happy energy! And since I have heard Alice Eve interviewed several times, I am getting rather fond of her. She sounds as devoted to the craft of acting as some of my favorite actors. Wondering if she will be back for Trek3.

Anton along with Zoe and Eric Bana were last time on Star Trek premiere.

This time we had more trekkies and that was great. The audience reaction was priceless. We all laughed, cried and applauded during the movie and that it worth to wait four years.

here in Berlin someone told me that there is a stage being build at the sony center, the place of the star trek premiere gala, which is bigger than anything before. He did not know if it will be actually for the star trek premiere but if this is the case this will be the biggest event of that kind, Berlin has ever seen!

Yes, much better. They all look very elegantly turned out. Much nicer than at that MTV thing. Though I doubt they were able to eat anything that evening in those supertight jackets.

@19. I’m disgusted. Trek is an AMERICAN institution and for the first time, we have to wait while the entire world gets to see the movie premiered before WE do. This is a crime!

I thoroughly understand the fact that the bean counters want to make this movie more international and drum up the international dollars. Perhaps, we should have been first, then the international dates follow in rapid..say weekly succession.

From the few quickie reviews, it seems the movie is ho-hum popcorn movie fare, not to talk about being a stand out Trek movie. The posters with Kirk, Spock and Uhura holding guns in a Charlie’s Angels’ like pose is telling. What does vengeance by the Trek crew have to do with Star Trek? If this is the theme of the movie, this would be a shame. I would more than be glad to be proven wrong come 5-18.

Pray tell, out of over 700 scripts filmed what percentage involved Federation crew vengeance that you consider a LOT?

TV shows and movies aren’t connected. In the movies revenge has played a role in a lot of the movies and it was the main focus in quite a few.

How can anyone who is upset or ‘disgusted’ about other countries getting an early premier call themselves a Star Trek fan??? Star Trek is not YOURS, it is the collective OURS of the world. Gene emphasized in the original show that by that time we’d be working together harmoniously. You’re going to see the damn movie so calm down. America is not the only place with Trek fans and usually, the ones outside of this country arent thrown a bone (gotta admit, I do want the JJprise model that’s only going to be sold overseas :)) But really, it’s a studio issue about trying to have the film make more money than it did previously and before you get on a soapbox about how Trek isnt a cash cow, um how else do you think Trek gets to be around? Enterprise was cancelled because of money. The late 90s boom of new Trek was because of the money that TNG produced. So lets get real and dial down the anger to outsiders. Trek is for all of us.

In the Trek franchise, that’s just not true. For example In TV episode SPACE SEED, and film TWOK, the Khan character is connected and even played by the same actor who admits that he was recapturing what he did to create the character for the film.

The Star Trek Into Darkness world premiere road show just made its latest stop, this time in Russia. The film screened today, April 25, at the Planetarium in Moscow and, braving the rain to support the screening there were director J.J. Abrams and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Alice Eve.

Ewan mcgregor's historical drama weirdly copies his 2022 star wars show, the deeper meaning behind a gentleman in moscow episode 3's bees.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the finale of A Gentleman in Moscow.

• Count Rostov finds family, love, and purpose in his confinement at the Metropol Hotel, despite his initial imprisonment.
• The ending of A Gentleman in Moscow remains ambiguous, leaving Alexander's fate open to interpretation.
• Love and sacrifice are the central themes of the show, as Alexander risks everything to ensure the safety and happiness of his found family.

The ending of A Gentleman in Moscow brings with it the conclusion of Alexander Rostov's story, with his 35-year stretch of imprisonment inside Moscow's Metropol Hotel coming to a halt. After returning home from Paris in 1918 to save his grandmother from the violence of Russia's Bolshevik revolution , Count Rostov is sentenced to life imprisonment for his status as a member of the nation's ruling class. However, instead of being locked in a prison cell, Ewan McGregor's character is confined to the walls of a luxury hotel in the nation's capital.

Alexander's is spared execution, unlike so many of his other social peers. The reason for the leniency is Alexander being incorrectly credited with a poem titled "Where is our Purpose Now?" The literary work, actually written in 1913 by Alexander's old friend, Mishka, was partially credited as inciting the Revolution. The count manages to carve out some level of existence for himself at the Metropol , with the novelty of his situation quickly wearing off. Along the way, Alexander Rostov finds the family he'd never had before, giving a man who'd lost everything something else to lose.

The Paramount/Showtime limited series A Gentleman in Moscow is led by Golden Globe and Emmy winner Ewan McGregor and his wife Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

What Happens To Alexander Rostov After He Leaves The Metropol Hotel Explained

The post-escape fate of mcgregor's character is unknown.

At the end of A Gentleman in Moscow episode 8, "Adieu," Alexander dons his hat and strolls through the doors of the Metropol Hotel. After all the phones in the building ring at once as Richard Vanderwhile's signal that Sofia is safe, Alexander can depart while knowing his surrogate daughter is in trusted hands. While Alexander is shown successfully leaving the building , the other side of the door isn't shown, so it's impossible to confirm what happens to the Count after this scene. Even the show's narrator, an older Sofia, confirms that she never knew what her father did next.

"I discovered that Papa had escaped the hotel, but what happened after remains a mystery. I like to imagine [Alexander and Anna] finally free, living out the rest of their lives together. They gave me the greatest gift of life. I'll keep them in my heart. Always. "

The sequence that's shown of Alexander's reunion with Anna in "Adieu" is shot in the same 4:3 aspect ratio as A Gentleman in Moscow 's flashbacks sequences, which were often from Count Rostov's point of view. However, as Sofia confirms that she never saw her parents again , this particular scene can't be a memory. Instead, what's being shown is Sofia's imaginings, dreaming of the two people who risked so much to save her enjoying a well-deserved, peaceful life.

Alexander does still have his stolen Finnish passport when he leaves the hotel, so it is possible he was able to flee the country and reunite with Anna.

The black apples shown during this scene are another sign that it's nothing more than Sofia's fantasy . Earlier in the same episode, Alexander tells the Metropol staff of an old legend from when he was growing up. The story tells of a tree hidden deep in the woods, bearing " Apples as black as coal ." If a person found and ate the apples, they would have the chance to live their life anew. Alexander immediately adds that he wouldn't eat the apples if he were to find them today, as despite his tumultuous life, it's a journey he doesn't regret.

Alexander is never shown telling Sofia this same story, but the presence of the black apples in the story's closing sequence suggests that he did share the tale with her at some point.

How & Why Sofia Flees Russia At The End Of A Gentleman In Moscow

Sofia's one-way trip to america took careful planning.

Despite being a staunch patriot, Alexander is still of the opinion that Sofia would have a better life in America than she would if she were to stay in Russia. Thankfully, Alexander's spying on the country's top brass in A Gentleman in Moscow episode 7 , "An Assembly," also presents an opportunity for McGregor's character to send his daughter to safety. The scheme is carried out in collaboration with Alexander's American ally , Richard Vanderwhile, who plans the operation for them.

Only Sofia is granted asylum by the Americans, with Alexander telling his daughter that the request for himself and Anna to receive the same treatment was simply too much to ask.

With the recordings from the meeting in her possession, Sofia heads to Paris as part of a musical tour. After performing, she cuts her hair short and changes her clothes to blend in with the crowd and leaves without being spotted. The powers that be grow wise to her scheme, as they move her performance slot from before the interval to the penultimate position in the running order. Thankfully, Sofia still has just enough time and barely manages to avoid being detected. After arriving at the American embassy in Paris, Vanderwhile arranges for Sofia to be flown to the USA .

Where Alexander Rostov Stands With Osip Glebnikov At The End Of A Gentleman In Moscow

Alexander & osip exchange declarations of friendship.

Alexander's relationship with Osip Glebnikov is intentionally unclear throughout A Gentleman in Moscow . Although Osip is essentially responsible for making sure Alexander doesn't break the terms of his sentence by leaving the Metropol, Alexander's jailer chooses to spend more time with his prisoner than is necessary for him to perform his duties. They engage in etiquette lessons, debates about literature, and even start to watch movies together. However, it mostly seems as though Osip is forcing the interactions to take place. Despite the ambiguity of their arrangement, Osip admits in the finale that he values their relationship .

The story of Ewan McGregor's Alexander Rostov from A Gentleman in Moscow shares some strong parallels to that of the actor's Star Wars character.

While warning McGregor's character of the danger Sofia is in - and by extension, Alexander himself - Osip says, " I like you, Alexander. I think of you as a friend ." The count replies in his signature guarded style: " As do I you, in a manner of speaking ." Osip may not have been the most valued figure to Alexander in his day-to-day life, but their friendship offered both men a different perspective. In addition, Osip also assisted Alexander return to the Metropol undetected following Sofia's trip to the hospital - an act that could have had both characters severely punished, if not killed.

Osip is also instrumental in making sure Anna departs for Finland without Alexander. By the time of "Adieu," Osip's wife and daughter are dead. So, Osip wants to make sure Alexander's family doesn't suffer the same fate.

Did Alexander Leave Manager Leplevsky To Die?

Alexander finally takes the revenge he's been trying to avoid.

Leplevsky is the biggest villain throughout the story of A Gentleman in Moscow , with Alexander's life at the Metropol Hotel becoming more difficult as his nemesis rises through the ranks. With Alexander's planned departure from the hotel imminent, it initially seems as though he's willing to let bygones be bygones and spare Leplevsky any acts of revenge. Unfortunately for the hotel manager, his last-minute discovery of Alexander's plan to escape results in McGregor needing to take action .

After arming himself with the dueling pistols from the manager's office, Alexander chains up Leplevsky in the bowels of the Metropol Hotel.

At the same time, he incinerates the files the manager had been collating about the hotel's staff - Alexander and Sofia included. Leplevsky begs to be set free as Alexander departs , with the exchange between the two adversaries suggesting it would be a while before anyone finds the trapped hotel boss. So, while Alexander doesn't directly murder Manager Leplevsky, he could still be responsible for his death.

How Alexander's Imprisonment In The Metropol Hotel Was The Beginning Of His Life (Not The End)

Alexander rostov's personal life somehow flourished at the metropol.

When Alexander was sentenced to life imprisonment, he was in his early thirties. His only surviving family member was his grandmother, whom he had helped escape the country four years previously. In addition, he was estranged from Mishka - his oldest friend. Alexander had never married, nor fathered any children. Despite his life of wealth and privilege that had preceded his incarceration, he was deeply alone. Somewhat surprisingly, Alexander's decades trapped in the Metropol led to some of the most important relationships in his life .

Despite the early trauma of seeing Prince Nikolai being dragged out of the hotel to be shot in the street in A Gentleman in Moscow episode 1 , Alexander went on to hit a rich vein of social bonds. His friendship with Nina was vital during the early stages of his sentence, and although the pair struggled to stay on the same political wavelengths at times, their special relationship weathered the storm. Alexander also eventually managed to build bridges with Mishka .

Eventually, Alexander's on-and-off romantic dynamic with Anna Urbanova solidified into a solid foundation of love and trust, with the pair essentially becoming joint parents to Sofia.

If Alexander was a father figure to Nina, then he was essentially a grandfather in his role as generational caretaker when Sofia was left in the count's care. Alexander raised Sofia as his own , while making sure she never forgot her birth mother. Eventually, Alexander's on-and-off romantic dynamic with Anna Urbanova solidified into a solid foundation of love and trust, with the pair essentially becoming joint parents to Sofia. As a result, Alexander hit several milestones during his imprisonment that he either neglected or failed to achieve while he was a free man.

The Real Meaning Of A Gentleman In Moscow's Ending

Alexander's unconfirmed destiny compounds the story of love and loss.

A Gentleman in Moscow , like so many other stories, is about love. However, the show's theme of love is also tied into the concept of loss, and how the two interact with one another. The love that Alexander Rostov has for Anna and Sofia results in him putting their safety first , ensuring they are away from the Metropol Hotel and safely on their respective ways to their new homes at the time of him making his escape attempt.

Alexander Rostov's journey in A Gentleman in Moscow has been full of twists and turns, but the bees in episode 3 serve as a brilliant metaphor.

Alexander is fully aware of the risks to himself, Anna, and Sofia that their plan presents. Still, the love he has for his found family makes him willing to put himself in harm's way if it means there's a chance of a better tomorrow for the daughter he cherishes and the woman he loves. Osip acts in a similar vein by helping Alexander. Despite losing his wife and daughter, Osip chooses not to let his grief turn him bitter and instead makes sure Alexander doesn't suffer the same heartbreak.

Sofia's fantasy of her parents living out their days together is about as perfect an ending as the show can expect, with the unconfirmed nature of the scenario contributing to the dark beauty of the story's conclusion.

Shatner pitches "Weird or What" in Cannes

We will find in May if William Shatner’s new sitcom Bleep My Dad Says gets picked up, but one Shatner show that is definitely going on the air is Weird or What , a new documentary series Shatner is co-producing an hosting. The show description press release make it sound a bit like Leonard Nimoy’s In Search Of :

in Weird or What? William Shatner will investigate and analyze all that is weird in the world, including everything from paranormal phenomena to weird and wonderful creatures, from medical oddities to mysterious disappearances, and bizarre natural disasters to mystical monster attacks.  

The show has been sold to Discovery Channel in the US and History Channel in Canada. Today Shatner is at the MIP TV convention in Cannes today selling  the show to the world. Variety reports that production company Cineflix has successfully sold the show to "nearly every territory". At the event Shatner described the show:

We’re looking at weird circumstances but we’re presenting them in a light-hearted, jaunty way. We’re not taking ourselves too seriously.

Chris Pine headed to Moscow as Jack Ryan

Last year Chris Pine, the new Kirk, was tapped as the new Jack Ryan, to head up another big Paramount franchise. New details have emerged on this next film based on the Tom Clancy character. Pajiba reports the following story synopsis for the next Jack Ryan film (now with the working title of "Moscow"):

The movie will pick up with the Jack Ryan not long after his stint in the Marines, before he’s joined the CIA, while he’s a Wall Street stock broker, an occupation that will play heavily into the script. In the Clancy novels, Jack Ryan was a successful financial analyst in Baltimore for Merrill Lynch. In the new movie, he will have transplanted to Moscow to continue his financial advising, not for Merill Lynch (which has been absorbed by Bank of America), but for a billionaire employer. It is that billionaire employer who eventually sets Jack Ryan up to take the fall for terrorist plot designed to collapse the U.S. economy. After that, Ryan must race against time to clear his name, reveal the terrorist plot, and save his wife, who has been taken hostage by the billionaire employer.

No word yet on when "Moscow" will go in front of cameras or be released, but probably following Pine’s work on the next Star Trek .

Nimoy’s last day as an actor? + honored as space inspiration

Spock Prime, Leonard Nimoy has recently stated he is ready to back into acting retirement. This would mean his last job as an actor would be reprising his role as William Bell in the season finale  JJ Abrams’ Fringe . And yesterday, Nimoy tweeted " Finishing work on Fringe today. Really good experience. The two parter will air in May." Today he tweeted that his back home. Speaking of Twitter, in just four days TheRealNimoy has picked up almost 33,000 followers.

But Mr. Nimoy is still out and about. On Thursday Leonard is being honored by the Space Foundation at the National Space Symposium in Colorado. Nimoy is being presented with the Douglas S. Morrow Public Outreach award for being an inspiration to people around the world "to explore the wonders of science, space, and technology." And a reminder, next Friday the original Spock is headed to the Vulcan, Alberta, Canada (the official Star Trek capital of Canada) to unveil a bust of himself, and then he is off to the Calgary Entertainment Expo for the weekend.

Quinto on NYSE floor

Finally we come to the new Mr. Spock, Zachary Quinto. The actor is currently in New York  filling out his resume as a producer an actor in Margin Call , a film set in the world of the stock market. Last week Zach tweeted this pic of himself with his Before the Door production company partners.

While he has been in New York, Quinto has been a frequent Twitterer, sending gems like this one last Thursday:

the t-shirt i was wearing today smelled. so i bought a new t-shirt. now it smells. already. why you got to be so smelly t-shirts?

But no worries, Zach was cleaned up all nice by the next night…

The two shows should be combined to form a show called “Weird Fringe”, and in the first show William Shatner could focus on mysteries of Mr.Spock’s bowl haircut.

From everything I’ve seen of Ben Affleck, he’s pretty impressed with himself. Chris Pine will be 1000 times better than him.
