A harbour city, Dar Es Salaam is probably best known for its more famous Tanzanian cousins, Serengeti National Park, Mount Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar. Much like its alluring neighbours, Dar es Salaam is a melting pot of influences thanks to its past as an important trading centre. Having achieved its independence as recently as 1963, the city is embracing the founder of Dar es Salaam, a sultan of Zanzibar’s, original intention for the city; that it be a Palace of pleasure and peace. Visitors can enjoy the ancient history of the region at the Village Museum which showcases traditional Tanzanian music and dance daily, snorkel, swim and sunbath at one of the local beaches and enjoy tropical flora and fauna at the Botanical Gardens. As it is a Muslim city, Dar es Salaam tourist guides won’t be able to offer much in the way of bars, but the food and music will more than make up for that. The heady mixture of Arab, Asian, African and German colonial influences make for a cosmopolitan city, you’ll find it hard to forget.

Dar Es Salaam City Guide: A Brief History Of Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania

Got a minute? Let’s rewind and dive into the history of Dar Es Salaam, a city whose past is as vibrant and colorful as its present. Once a sleepy Zaramo fishing village, Dar has transformed into Tanzania’s largest and most dynamic city. So, how did this transformation happen? Let’s unpack the layers of Dar’s history and see how it became the heart of East Africa.

A Fisherman’s Village Takes Center Stage

Believe it or not, before it caught the eye of sultans and colonizers, Dar Es Salaam was just a small fishing village. Its strategic location along the Swahili Coast wasn’t overlooked for long, though. In the late 19th century, Sultan Majid of Zanzibar saw its potential and set plans to turn it into a major trading port. Though Majid didn’t live to see his vision come to fruition, his successor, Sultan Barghash, and later German colonizers, picked up where he left off, laying the groundwork for the city’s rapid growth.

Colonial Crossroads

Under German rule, Dar Es Salaam really began to take shape. The Germans had big plans, constructing buildings, a railway, and setting the stage for the city’s future importance. After World War I, the British took over, further influencing the city’s architectural and cultural landscape. This blend of colonial influences, mixed with local traditions, created a unique melting pot that still defines the city’s character today.

Independence and Growth

Flooding in Tanzania caused by weeks of heavy rain has killed 155 people and affected more than 200,000 others, the prime minister said Thursday.

That is more than double the number of deaths reported two weeks ago as the heavy rainfall continues, especially in the coastal region that includes the capital, Dar es Salaam.

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa told Parliament that the El Niño climate pattern has worsened the ongoing rainy season, causing flooding and destroying roads, bridges and railways. Flooded schools have been closed and emergency services have rescued people marooned by the floodwaters.

Majaliwa warned those living in low-lying areas to move to higher ground and urged local officials to ensure that provisions meant for those whose homes were washed away go to those who need it.

He said more than 51,000 households have been affected by the rains.

Unrelenting rainfall across Kenya's northern counties and the capital, Nairobi, has led to widespread flooding, displacing an estimated 36,000 people and killing 46 people since the beginning of the rainy season less than a month ago. At least 130 die from floods in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia

Heavy rains in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia triggered what aid agencies described as flooding seen only once every 100 years.

Nov. 17, 2023

The East African region is experiencing heavy rains , with flooding also reported in neighboring Burundi and Kenya.

In Kenya, 35 people were reported dead as of Monday, and the number was expected to increase as flooding continues across the country.

In the Mathare slum in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, at least four bodies were retrieved from flooded houses Wednesday. Local media reported that more bodies were retrieved from the Mathare River.

Kenyan President William Ruto chaired a multi-agency flood response meeting Thursday and directed the National Youth Service to provide land for people in flood-affected areas.

Musambi writes for the Associated Press.
