DIY: How to Make a Jeep Diaper Cake

You are making the diaper cake with things that the gifted person is going to use. So, you need to make sure that everything that you are going to include is excellent and proper for a baby to use. The sizing and other things have to be appropriate, as well. Make sure that you have the right amount of diapers. You can always use other things, such as baby powder, lotion, or shampoo. But, it is essential to make sure that you are including the right amount of diapers in the cake.

In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to make a 4×4 diaper cake. We’ll use our measurements, but feel free to alter things to suit your needs.

Materials You Will Need

Before anything, as we have already hinted, you need to purchase all the goodies. The things you are going to need for creating the jeep are listed below-

Diapers Around 82 of Them:

These are the cornerstones of your creation. You will use them to make all four wheels and the body of the jeep.

Rubber Bands:

You can never have enough rubber bands when making a diaper cake, so be sure to stock up on plenty!

This is what you place everything on top of as you assemble your cake. You can purchase a pre-made cake base or make your own using a sturdy piece of cardboard.

Putting the foam board

Baby Items:

This is where you can get creative! Choose items that the parents will need for the baby, such as receiving blankets, onesies, bibs, pacifiers, etc.

Car Accessories:

To make your jeep look more realistic and fun, you can add car accessories like toy cars, mini steering wheels, decals or stickers.

Scissors and Glue:

To cut and secure the diapers in place.

Ribbon/Bows:

For decoration.

Steps to Follow

The first step for how to make a jeep diaper cake is the obvious one: get all the materials ready right beside your hand. You cannot start the project without having one item missing. Make sure you have enough diapers to complete the project, as you will need many of them. You can purchase extra diapers if you do not need them. The good thing about this is that you can give the diapers to the parents as well.

The next steps will include making each part one by one, and the first part you are going to make is the wheels.

To make the wheels, you will need to use diapers and rubber bands.

Start by rolling the diapers. You will need to roll 28 diapers and use 7 to make four wheels. After rolling them, you will use seven diapers and create a round shape using them. Secure each of the wheels with rubber bands. Next, you will need to fold the remaining diapers in half and secure them with rubber bands. Then, you will roll them and make a tube out of them.

The next step is to make the axles. The axles are going to join the wheels for you.

You will need to make two axles, and to do so; you will need to use paper towel rolls, diapers, washcloths, and tape.

First, take one roll and put two diaper rolls inside the roll. In the middle of the roll, put a washcloth and secure them properly with tape.

To make a tie blanket, you first need to lay out a fleece blanket. You can fold it in half if it’s too big. Then, tie knots around the edge of the blanket, about an inch apart.

Take seven diapers and put them on each other. Take a washcloth and put them on one side of the diaper stack, and secure it with the rubber band. You need to make two of them. Now take the two diaper-and-washcloth stacks and put them on each other, making sure that the washcloths are facing each other. Take another rubber band and secure it around the middle. You should now have a big, bulky, square-shaped object.

Cut two pieces of cardboard in the shape of a car. After making them, put them on each side of the blanket, and you will have the front and the back of the car.

The next step is to make headlights. You will need to make four headlights.

Take a roll-up of the diaper and tuck it to a sock, and you will have the headlight ready. Make four of them. And put them on each side of the previously made diaper stack. Tape them to secure properly. You can also use glue to fix the headlights. It is essential to make sure that the headlights are secure properly. They will also need to be facing the right direction.

The next step is to complete the body of the jeep. To do that, you need to fill up the central place using diaper rolls and diapers to even everything out.

Put the foam board or cardboard on top of it.

After filling them up, wrap the whole body with the fleece blanket and carefully flip the entire thing—wrap ribbons on the front and back of the jeep body.

Now it is time to make the cab. To do so, you need to take 12 diapers and make a stack with them. Secure the stack with a rubber band.

Take a blanket and wrap it around the stack like a gift wrapper and secure it with paperclips.

making diaper cake

Put the stack on top of the jeep body. The placement should be more on the front than on the back.

Take the two bibs. Put one on top of the cab and another one underneath it to drape over the front. You will have the car, food and windshield ready. You can experiment with different colored bibs to make the jeep look more attractive. You can also add other baby items to decorate the cab, such as a pacifier for the steering wheel or onesies for windows.

You are correctly done, with the body of the jeep. Now you have to assemble the wheels onto it. To do that, you take two of the rounded diaper rolls and shove them on the axles, and they will stay secure. To make everything look good, you can use ribbons and plastic flowers.

Place the jeep body on top of the two wheels, and your jeep is ready.

This will include the final touch of the whole project. If you need to, you can add more ribbons wherever you wish to, and you can make extra decorations with anything that you think will look good on the diaper jeep.

And there you have, your jeep diaper cake ready. Before you set off to gift it, you need to make an appropriate box to fit the diaper cake and decorate the box as you want to gift it. This will be one of the perfect gifts for the new parents. They will appreciate this gift a lot since you have made it by yourself. You can also add small notes on top of the box, mentioning how you had fun making it or how excited you are for welcoming their little bundle of joy to the world.

Ideas for Personalization

  • Use themed baby items such as safari animals or cartoon characters to decorate the jeep.
  • Add personalized decals or stickers with the baby’s name or initials on the doors or windows of the jeep.
  • Use fabric markers to draw designs or write messages on the fleece blanket, such as “Welcome Baby” or “It’s a Boy/Girl.”
  • Incorporate special items that hold meaning for the new parents, such as a toy or accessory from their favorite sports team.
  • Use different colored diapers to create a pattern on the wheels or body of the jeep.
  • Add small toys or rattles hanging from the rearview mirror or attached to the sides of the jeep for extra decoration.
  • Include a personalized diaper cake topper with the baby’s name or birth date.  Overall, have fun and be creative with the personalization to make the diaper jeep unique and special for new parents.  With your personalized touches, this gift will be a cherished keepsake for years to come.

How Much Could It Cost?

The cost of making a diaper jeep cake can vary depending on the materials and decorations used. On average, the cost of supplies can range from $30 to $50. However, by using items you already have at home or finding deals on supplies, you could potentially make the diaper jeep for less.

Additionally, if you are considering purchasing a pre-made diaper cake from a store or online, the cost can range from $50 to $100 or more. Making a diaper jeep yourself not only allows for personalization but can also be a more affordable option.  Overall, the cost will depend on your budget and preferences, but it is possible to create a beautiful and unique diaper Jeep cake without breaking the bank.

Diaper Cakes – How To Make a Cute Baby Shower Gift On A Budget!

Making a fun gift out of diapers for a baby shower, or for expectant parents, is such a great way to present a baby gift. It does not take a lot of extra supplies to make a baby shower gift extra special. Just buy a box of diapers, and and of the other items you would be purchasing for a gift anyway, and then put it together as a super cute diaper cake or diaper jeep to leave a lasting impression with your gift.

There are so many baby items that are affordable. Plus, if you shop ahead you can get some great deals on diapers. If you are one of those who stockpile your free items here is a cute way to turn those frugal finds into gifts that look anything but cheap – make a diaper cake!

I remember getting a diaper cake at my last baby shower, and it is one of the gifts that stands out the most in my mind. It was so fun to receive, and they are so fun to make too!

Beyond Diaper Cake Ideas….

While a diaper cake is the easiest to make, I had so much fun doing this jeep diaper cake for an upcoming baby shower. I used the diaper box itself for the frame, and it only took one box of receiving blankets (3-4) and a box of baby wash clothes to wrap it and turn it into a jeep. Then you can decide what additional items you want to add beyond the diapers, if any. So it works nice with lots of different budgets that way.

safari jeep diaper cake diy

I packed the back of this diaper jeep with additional gifts, but you could easily just add more diapers back here (I had plenty let over from my box of diapers, if you prefer to do it that way to save costs).

Here is more information on how to put together a diaper cake, or diaper jeep as your next baby shower gift. The idea is more to inspire you with the basic idea, and then you can take that and make it your own. There are a number of videos and tutorials online too, if you want to see more ideas on other takes on these cute baby shower gifts.

How to Make A Diaper Cake:

Diaper cakes are really simple. Since this is the simplest of the two diaper gifts, we will start here (skip down further if you are looking for the diaper Jeep How To Instructions). You can make them two or three layers (or more if you want), and then stuff them with additional items, or just gift it as diapers.

Supplies needed –

  • You will need a base. Something as simple as some cardboard you have around the house can be covered with foil or you can purchase a nicer cardboard base at your craft store/ party store
  • One bag of small rubber bands (about 50 ct and preferably the clear ones if you can find)
  • About 8′ of 1″ ribbon
  • All of those baby items you have been stocking (J&J buddies bars, diaper cream, shampoo, lotions, bottles, stuffed animals, q-tips…whatever you have on hand)
  • The diapers you have stockpiled (approximately 50)
  • Double stick tape (although you can make any kind of adhesive tape work)

DIY Diaper Cakes

How to make the diaper cake –

1) Roll each diaper up (so it ends up looking like a toilet paper roll). Secure with a rubber band. If you want diaper design to show keep design on outside as you roll, if not roll design side of diaper inward.

2) You will be making 3 tiers ( If you are short on diapers you can do two tiers and top with stuffed animal for third tier, or even just do a one tier cake, and decorate the top with items).

To assemble first tier start with one diaper as your center and stand 5 or six diapers around that. If you have a bottle you can use that as your center rather then a diaper for a more decorative look. You can also fill it will small items like pacifiers, etc. if you have those on hand. Secure outside of tier with ribbon (if you have narrow ribbon on hand you may want to start with that so you can use your one inch ribbon more concisely for finishing touches).

For second tier use similar technique only using approximately 15 diapers to create tier. Once again secure with ribbon.

For third tier use approximately 27-30 diapers. To make this big tier easier tie off a smaller circle of diapers and continue to build around that.

3) Take your cardboard base and secure the largest tier to the base with double stick tape (you want to keep it from moving around, but not end up making it difficult for recipient to take apart). Place second tier on top of that, again securing with tape. Lastly place the smallest tier on top, also securing with tape.

4) Wrap your 1″ ribbon around each tier in an attractive way.

5) Now the fun part, begin to stuff all of the freebies in each tier in a decorative way.

How to Make A Diaper Jeep Cake:

Supplies needed for diaper jeep cake

  • 40 to 60 diapers (depending on how you want to add them to the jeep – I used size 1 – I also bought them in a diaper box vs bag, so I could use the diaper box for the jeep frame)
  • Packing tape
  • Rubber bands
  • 3-4 receiving blankets
  • 3-4 washcloths
  • two paper towel rolls
  • Safety Pins (optional)
  • 3 inch wide ribbon (optional)
  • Stuffed Animal to drive jeep (optional)
  • Baby Booties for side mirrors (optional)
  • Items to fill jeep (optional)

To make your Jeep Diaper Cake:

I then cut out the front of the jeep (so you can create the grill), tape the hood part to the sides, to make it strong, and cut out two strips of cardboard from the excess to make the roll bars.

To cut out the roll bars, I measured the width of the box (that is how long you will need to bar to go across the top) and then decided how high I wanted it to come up on each side. Then make sure you have the main part (width of jeep box) and the two sides to make it come up (and fold it where you will want it to bend).

I also reserved some extra cardboard to create the seat inside and a license plate (totally optional).

safari jeep diaper cake diy

Once you have your cardboard cut out, it is time to cover your jeep body with blankets and wash clothes. There are lots of ways you can do this, so just play around and find what works best for the look you are going for.

For my jeep I used the wash clothes to line the inside of the box (securing with packing tape) and then used one folded receiving blanket to line the outside body, and one to go across the hood (also securing these on the bottom with packing tape). I then used a receiving blanket for each of the roll bars (so 4 total for me) but again, there are a number of ways you can wrap this and this was just the one I chose. Play around with it some, to see what look you like best.

safari jeep diaper cake diy

Once I had my jeep wrapped, it was time to work on the front grill. You can do this a couple of different ways too, but this is what I chose to do. I bought two sippy cups I used for bottom lights (you could use bottles, or just wrap diapers in a washcloth too). I then rolled 4 diapers to use for the top light and secured with a rubber band. Folks do this step in lots of different ways, this was just what I liked for my jeep best.

safari jeep diaper cake diy

To make the middle part of the grill, many just use diapers (use around 9 diapers going vertically in this space). I chose to use around 13 diapers set horizontally, and cover them with a striped washcloth I had on hand for my jeep. Play around with this step to see what you like best.

safari jeep diaper cake diy

I then set in a piece of leftover cardboard to act as a seat (also covering with a second striped washcloth I had. Another idea here is to put two diapers over this to look like seats). Then I added a pack of baby wipes here, to use as the seat for the stuffed animal I planned to have drive the jeep.

To Make the Wheels –

I used 7 diapers for each wheel – 6 to roll up, and one to wrap around it.

safari jeep diaper cake diy

You will roll up the blanket to cover the cardboard bar. I secured my blanket using safety pins, but you could use tape if you prefer.

Then bend (where you already had the bend marks made) and insert in your jeep to look like roll bars!

safari jeep diaper cake diy

This step is completely optional, but I used two baby boots to make side mirrors coming off both sides of the diaper jeep cake.

safari jeep diaper cake diy

I used safety pins to secure mine, and it turned out so stinking cute!!

How to make a diaper jeep cake

Once you have all the components completed, rest the diaper jeep body on top of the 4 wheels you made, and fill her up! You can really customize this so many different ways, depending on your own style and tastes, so play around with it until you love the way it looks. I then rested my completed diaper jeep cake on a piece of foam board, to make it easy to transport to the baby shower.

This is such a cute and memorable gift for the expecting mother you know. You could even just buy the diapers and use it as a way to display them in a very memorable way for the mom to be you know!

awesome idea, thanks for the how-to!

Can You Use Cloth Diapers for a Diaper Cake?

You certainly can use a different type of diaper for the project. However, to make sure the gift is something the new mom can use, it's a good idea to check with the baby shower hostess or the parents-to-be gift registry to see what type of diapers they will use.

Cloth diapers found in most department stores are often used as burp cloths, so this could work just fine for any new parent.  Just make sure you are getting what they prefer so it isn't something they can't use.

Swinging Into A Great Safari Adventure Diaper Cake

safari jeep diaper cake diy

Looking for a super cute baby shower idea or a sweet unique gift? This diaper cake is not only too cute but oh so practical. I remember being a new mom and thinking how can someone so little go through so many diapers in a day? The momma to be in your life will so appreciate you for this gift! You can make this too! I will explain exactly how! I will also have a complete supply list at the end.

safari jeep diaper cake diy

First step is to purchase cake circles. I purchased these at Walmart in the “Cake” decorating isle. You can also get at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc. You will need a pack that has numerous sizes in it. In this next picture are the sizes that I used for this safari cake.

safari jeep diaper cake diy

You will need one 12 inch, one 10 inch and one 8 inch circle. The perforated holes in the center of them are great because it will be your guide to work from the center out. More on that in a little bit.

You will need a cardboard tube of some kind. I used was an empty wrapping paper roll. Once you have your roll then determine how high you want your cake. If you want to add another layer than this is where you will determine a fourth cake circle. I did not cut my wrapping paper tube until the very end to make sure I had enough left to attach the giraffe.

safari jeep diaper cake diy

You will notice a black and white polka-dotted platter. This is actually a lazy susan that I found in the dollar spot at Target a while back. This helps so much in turning your cake as you place the diapers around. Any lazy susan will do or if you don’t have one, then work in a space you can walk around the cake. You won’t be able to move your circles without the diapers falling off. I used Pampers size small with a count of 96 diapers to make this cake and yes I used all 96.

Begin by rolling each diaper with the open side (the waist part), you will end with the closed side out (the butt part).

Small hair rubber bands are used to hold the diaper rolls. You can also use small regular rubber bands. These will be removed once all the diapers are tied together. Place a rubber band around the top of the rolled diaper. Continue this process until all diapers are rolled.

safari jeep diaper cake diy

Cut the center of both your 10 inch and 8 inch cake circles the same size circumference of your tube. I used a box cutter to cut the circumference. I laid the tube onto the back of the cake circle and I traced it with a pencil.

Remember this will be hidden so it doesn’t have to be perfect just don’t make it too big. This will allow those circles to slide onto the tube and lay on top of the layers of diapers.

Time to hot glue the wrapping paper roll to the bottom cake circle. Make sure you use a high temperature glue gun so that it sticks well. This is the support of the cake.

My favorite glue gun is the RYOBI glue gun. I don’t think I could do without it and I use it for all my creations. I have a link to Amazon in My Must Have Products here on my blog if you want to see one or want to learn more about it.

Once the glue is dry on your tube and bottom layer, begin by placing the rolled diapers on the bottom layer of the cake circle. When full, cut a piece of the “skinny” ribbon and wrap it around all of the diapers, making sure to get it tight but not so tight that it flares the diapers out. Once you have it tied you can always add more diapers to the layer. Remove the rubber band or hair ties from the diapers. Place the 10 inch cake circle on to the tube and repeat layering your diapers and tie them off with the skinny ribbon. Then place the 8 inch circle and repeat the steps.

safari jeep diaper cake diy

Here is where the decorating starts. I chose to place burlap ribbon around each layer of the cake. Do not remove the skinny ribbon. I used a safety pin to hold the ribbon in place. Remember you want your new momma to use all the diapers so no hot glue on the ribbon.

safari jeep diaper cake diy

Next is this green wired ribbon that was placed over the burlap ribbon. This created a layered look which is so cute. I used this same ribbon for the top layer bow.

Now to determine the placement for the giraffe. Use any safari animal you chose but the giraffe was chosen due to it being one of the animals in this adorable party print set. If you would like to have this complete print set, here is the name of the shop on Etsy. It’s called the Strawberry Party Print store. She sells the digital download and its super easy, just purchase, print and cut out. I do not know this shop owner accept for the purchase of these but she does have adorable items and I wanted to give her credit for such cute work.

safari jeep diaper cake diy

If you notice in this picture the sweet giraffe’s legs are crossed. This is how I hid the tube by using a couple of safety pins. I also used this vine ribbon from Hobby Lobby that was just perfect for the theme.

To attach the leaves, Welcome Baby and other animal prints, I used 6 inch food skewers. Just hot glue the prints onto the skewers and poke between the diapers. Remember these diapers are to be used so they can not be attached with hot glue. If the skewers are a little long then just cut with scissors or with wire cutters.

Next the vine ribbon was placed as to look like it was “growing” on the cake. That’s it!

The time to make this was about an hour but so affordable and cute!

Here is the supply list:

Cardboard Cake Circles – Multiply sizes 1- 12 inch 1-10 inch 1-8 inch

Wrapping paper tube

Diapers – Pampers small 96 count

Hot glue gun and glue

Small hair ties or small rubber bands

3 medium size safety pins

How to make a diaper jeep cake?

How to make a diaper jeep cake.

Creating a diaper jeep cake for a baby shower is a fun and creative way to give a practical and unique gift. This adorable diaper cake is a great way to showcase essential items for the new baby, such as diapers, blankets, bibs, and more. Not to mention, it makes for an eye-catching centerpiece at any baby shower. Here’s how to make a diaper jeep cake that will wow the guests and the mom-to-be.

First, gather the materials you’ll need for this project. You’ll need a pack of diapers, baby washcloths, receiving blankets, baby bibs, a toy car or truck, rubber bands, ribbon, and any other baby essentials you’d like to include. You can also use baby socks, pacifiers, and small baby items to decorate the jeep.

Start by laying out a blanket or towel on a flat surface to serve as the base for the diaper jeep cake. Then, take a diaper and roll it up, securing it with a rubber band. Repeat this step with the rest of the diapers and arrange them in a circle on the base, creating the wheels of the jeep. Use additional rubber bands to hold the circle in place and build up a second and third layer to create a tire-like effect. This will form the body of the jeep.

Next, fold the receiving blankets and arrange them over the top of the diaper layers to form the hood and roof of the jeep. Secure the blankets in place with rubber bands. Then, drape the washcloths over the sides to create the seats of the jeep. You can also fold and place the bibs in the center to resemble the seats, adding a playful touch to the design.

After the main structure is complete, it’s time to add the finishing touches. Use ribbon to tie around the diaper layers to cover the rubber bands and create a polished look. Add the toy car or truck to the top of the diaper jeep to give it a fun and playful appearance. You can also incorporate additional baby essentials, such as baby socks, pacifiers, and small toys to decorate the jeep and make it even more personalized.

Select a sturdy base for your cake, such as a cake board or a large flat tray. Ensure it’s big enough to accommodate the size of the cake.

Accessories:

Get creative with the accessories you want to include in your diaper jeep cake. Consider items like baby blankets, pacifiers, baby bottles, stuffed animals, or baby socks.

Choose colorful ribbons and decorations that match the theme or color scheme of the baby shower or the baby’s nursery.

Pro Tip: Some additional materials you may want to consider are rubber bands, transparent tape, hot glue gun (with glue sticks), scissors, and a rul Building the Base

The base of the diaper jeep cake will serve as the foundation for the entire structure. Follow these steps to construct the base:

Roll each diaper tightly from the open end to the folded edge.Secure the rolled diapers with rubber bands, ensuring they hold their shape.

Take four rolled diapers and tie them together with a rubber band, creating one wheel.Repeat this step to create a second wheel.

Place the two wheels on the base, with their open ends facing each other.Secure the wheels to the base using transparent tape or a hot glue gun for added stability.

Take four more rolled diapers and attach them between the two wheels, creating the axles.Secure the axles to the wheels and the base using tape or hot glue.

Shape the Body and Hood

Now that we have the base and the wheels, let’s move on to shaping the body and hood of the diaper jeep cake:

Take several rolled diapers and tightly position them vertically on top of the base, near the wheels.Secure these diapers together with rubber bands to form the body of the jeep.

Fold a baby blanket accordion-style to create the hood of the jeep.Attach the folded blanket to the top of the body using a rubber band or hot glue.

Pro Tip: You can add a fun twist by using a different colored blanket for the hood, mimicking the appearance of an open-top jeep.

Attach baby items, such as pacifiers, baby bottles, or stuffed animals, to the jeep using ribbons or hot glue.Let your creativity shine by arranging the accessories in different ways around the cake.

Plus, with these step-by-step instructions, you’ll find it’s easy and fun to make a jungle themed diaper cake.

1. Gather What You’ll Need to Make a Jungle Diaper Cake

102 Pampers Swaddlers Diapers (size 1 or 2)

3 cake pans (10”, 8” and 6”)

3 large rubber bands

Empty toilet paper rolls

Round, cardboard cake base that is at least 10” across

4 yards of ribbon

Assortment of washcloths, bibs, stuffed animals, and pacifiers

Decorative artificial branches and leaves

Hot glue gun

2. Create the Tiers of the Cake

Create the Tiers of the Cake

Place some of the Pampers Diapers into the largest (10”) cake pan. Fan the diapers against the edge of the pan to create a spiral shape, and keep adding diapers until the pan is full. Adjust the diaper edges to create an evenly spaced spiral.

Place a toilet paper tube in the center of the spiral so it maintains its shape. Then slide a rubber band around the spiral of diapers to hold them all in place. The spiral should be nice and firm.

Repeat this process using the 8” pan and the 6” pan.

3. Prepare the Base of the Cake

Prepare the Base of the Cake

Place the cardboard cake base on a flat surface.

Arrange the artificial branches so they cascade over the sides of the cake base. Hot glue leaves onto the cardboard as well. Set aside to dry.

4. Place Each Diaper Tier on Top of One Another

To decorate the cake, wrap ribbon around each layer so that you cover the rubber bands. Secure the ribbon ends with hot glue. Remember not to get any glue on the diapers.

You can also place a thinner, decorative ribbon on top of the first ribbon to create a contrasting, layered look.

Fill the hollow core of the diaper cake with bibs, washcloths, or other baby accessories that fit.

How to Buy or DIY a Diaper Cake for Your Next Baby Shower

profile picture of Emily Platt

There are plenty of words to describe diapers: “useful,” “essential,” the list goes on. But “fun” and “festive” don’t usually make the cut. That is, unless you’re talking about diaper cakes . Yes, we said diaper cakes, the popular trend taking baby showers by storm. And no, we don’t mean desserts shaped like diapers—we’re talking baby must-haves displayed in arrangements meant to look like confections.

There’s no doubt nappies are practical gifts, but they’re not the most exciting. Neither are many other baby items, like bottle brushes and washcloths . That’s why people are getting crafty with the way they package their presents.

If a diaper cake sounds like the perfect gift for the soon-to-be parents in your life, keep reading. We’ll walk you through all the basics, starting with some etiquette advice and diaper cake ideas. Then, we’ll get into how to make a diaper cake (including how many diapers you’ll need) and where to buy one if you aren’t feeling crafty.

What Is a Diaper Cake?

A standard diaper cake is just “an arrangement of diapers crafted to resemble a traditional tiered cake,” says Katherine Kommer, the founder of Baby Showers Inc . Stick with the simple, classic design or think outside the box. “More recently, other essential baby items such as clothing, bibs, blankets and washcloths are being used to craft custom gift arrangements and bouquets,” Kommer says.

So what’s the purpose of a diaper cake? Essentially, baby shower diaper cakes are a more visually creative, aesthetic way to gift parents-to-be the number one baby essential they’ll need: diapers. You can add in a touch of decoration, personalization and even include multiple diapers sizes to account for a growing newborn. In fact, these faux cakes can be so impressive, they’re used as baby shower centerpieces too. (A double-duty baby shower gift? Score!)

Diaper cakes are often assembled by hand, but if you don’t want to DIY, Kommer has noticed “an emergence of specialized vendors that sell pre-designed and custom-made diaper cakes.” (More on that in a bit!)

Baby Shower Diaper Cake Etiquette

If you’re planning to bring your diaper cake to a baby shower, check in with the host. Typically, whoever’s hosting the baby shower decides on the diaper cake design. That way, they can seamlessly tie it into the rest of the decor. That said, multiple people are welcome to pitch in, whether by providing supplies, contributing money or getting together to craft it. If you aren’t planning the party but you’d like to gift a diaper cake, coordinate with the host to make sure it aligns with the baby shower theme .

As for what products to use? Look to the baby registry to see what brands the parents are loving. Keep quality in mind, as this is a gift and not just a decoration.

Diaper Cake Ideas

When it comes to diaper cakes for boys and girls, the ideas are truly endless. You can opt for a traditional tiered diaper cake design or take things up a notch by constructing a whimsical sculpture—think: motorcycle diaper cake or a hot air balloon diaper cake. There are tons of possibilities for design themes and plenty of opportunities to let your creativity shine. If your loved one is having a woodland-themed baby shower, for example, consider adding in sprigs of greenery or top your diaper cake with a fox figurine. If the party palette skews pastel, use patterned diapers with soft hues.

Looking for inspiration? We tapped some of our favorite bloggers and crafters to share their cute, clever designs, which you can choose to replicate (follow their DIY instructions!) or use as a creative spark. Check out the diaper cake ideas below.

Elephant diaper cake

This simple but beautiful elephant diaper cake from Wendy of The Crowded Nest uses two tiers of rolled up diapers. She tied each with yellow and burlap ribbon and used green plant branches for accents. For her topper, she used a sweet stuffed elephant with a yellow bow tied around its neck. (Love this elephant diaper cake but don’t want to make it? Buy it from the shoppable section below!)

Motorcycle diaper cake

For her motorcycle diaper cake, Samantha of A Home to Grow Old In used 65 size 2 diapers to create three “wheels” tied together by ribbon and receiving blankets. She used a sippy cup for the headlights and more blankets (and tiny socks!) for the handlebars. Samantha completed her cake with a stuffed toy riding on top of the motorcycle. Now that’s a diaper cake idea that’s sure to get the wheels turning!

Winnie the pooh diaper cake

This Winnie the Pooh diaper cake was made by Sue from Creative “Try”als . She used little details to incorporate the theme into the cake, like painting the tube she used for her base with a picture of Pooh and making rosettes with printed Winnie the Pooh clipart for the sides and topper. The result is a sweet diaper cake fit for any baby shower center table.

safari jeep diaper cake diy

Sunflower diaper cake

Lauren from Girls Gone Food created this sunflower diaper cake as part of a farm-themed baby shower. She used instructions from A Hosting Home to construct the three tiers and then wrapped each layer with bumble bee towels and burlap ribbon. The diaper cake is decorated with a plush bee toy topper, faux sunflowers and Burt’s Bees baby products.

safari jeep diaper cake diy

Jeep diaper cake

For her jeep diaper cake, Thrifty Northwest Mom bought a box of size 1 diapers. She repurposed the box to use as the base of her jeep, covering it with blankets and washcloths, and made wheels from the diapers. She used baby booties for side mirrors, sippy cups as headlights and a teddy bear as the driver, and loaded the cake with other baby essentials.

safari jeep diaper cake diy

Dinosaur diaper cake

This dinosaur diaper cake from Linda of Linda’s ParTea Box is as cute as can be. Using three tiers, she used blue and green ribbon to tie her layers and put yellow, green and brown confetti on top of each layer to incorporate the colors of the jungle. She also included small dinosaur toys throughout and a larger one as the topper.

safari jeep diaper cake diy

Harry potter diaper cake

Crafting Cheerfully worked some incredible magic with this Harry Potter diaper cake for boys and girls. Shaped like the Hogwarts Express, this cake cleverly uses diapers for the train’s body, covered by red and black felt, and wheels. It also incorporates red and black socks and bibs and uses printed logos to complete the theme.

Hot air balloon diaper cake

For her gender-neutral hot air balloon diaper cake, Amber of Busy Creating Memories used rolled diapers tied with burlap ribbon to create the “basket” and a paper lantern to make the “balloon,” plus an adorable stuffed giraffe as the passenger. The result? A stunning diaper cake that’s bound to be a showstopper at any baby shower.

safari jeep diaper cake diy

Minnie mouse diaper cake

The Suburban Mom is no stranger to making baby shower diaper cakes and has crafted tons of centerpieces—including this Minnie Mouse diaper cake. To start, she constructed a three-tiered diaper cake and then decked it out with baby essentials that fit with the theme, including Minnie Mouse swaddles, teethers, sippy cups and more.

Safari diaper cake

This safari diaper cake, from Rebecca of Devour Dinner , is an absolute standout, but she says even the least crafty people could easily make it in as little 45 minutes. For her bottom tier, she cleverly opted to use a package of baby wipes as the base. After assembling her three tiers, she embellished each with colorful ribbon and cute cutouts of safari animals. On top, she added a sweet giraffe lovey .

Unicorn diaper cake

This unicorn diaper cake by Diaper Cakes with Takalee is that elusive, magical combination of straightforward and stunning. She used a large, solid white ribbon to cover the three tiers and make them look more like a “cake,” accenting each with a glittery gold ribbon as well. For the unicorn, she attached lashes to the top tier, used a topper for the ears and horn and added cascading foam flowers down the cake to imitate the mane. (You can also shop this diaper cake in the shoppable section below!)

How to Make a Diaper Cake

You’ve selected your design and are ready to go—but how do you make a diaper cake, exactly? Read on to learn about the basics of creating a diaper cake, including how many diapers you’ll need, the best types of diapers to use and the materials you’ll need on hand, plus step-by-step instructions for how to create a masterpiece of your own.

How many diapers do you need for a diaper cake?

The number of diapers you need will largely depend on the size of your diaper cake. For a traditional three-tier diaper cake, you’ll likely need around 100 diapers; for a smaller cake with one or two tiers, you may only need between 40 to 60. How many diapers you wind up using also depends on what size and brand of diapers you choose. When making a baby shower diaper cake, it can be good to include a mix of size 1, 2 and 3 diapers, as newborn size diapers are hard to work with (and babies tend to quickly outgrow them!).

What diapers are best for a diaper cake?

While you want your diaper cake to be decorative, keep in mind that it’s also a practical gift that the parents will hopefully get loads of use out of! Choose quality diapers from reputable brands . If the parents-to-be have specific diaper brands listed on their registry, opt for those.

The type of diapers you choose may also depend on the design of your diaper cake. If you’re hoping for a crisp, neutral look, you may want unadorned, white diapers for your cake; for that, Coterie , The Honest Company’s Clean Conscious diapers in white and Earth’s Best Tendercare diapers are great options.

But many brands also offer diapers in adorable prints that will elevate any theme. If you’re designing for a Mickey Mouse-themed shower, for example, Huggies diapers feature a Mickey Mouse print. For fun, patterned diapers, look to brands such as HelloBello and The Honest Company , both of which feature an impressive, rotating range of prints—you can find florals, hot air balloons, elephants, veggies, tropical birds and plants, trucks and even characters from Dr. Seuss!

Step-by-step diaper cake DIY instructions

Here, Kommer walks you through the fundamentals of how to make a diaper cake—she’s even included photos in her tutorial! Below are instructions for a three-tier design. Follow the steps for a minimalist diaper cake DIY design, or use it as a foundation and spruce up the final product with decorations and accents of your choosing.

  • 60 to 65 size 1 or 2 diapers (but it doesn’t hurt to have extras in case; the final amount you need may depend on the size and brand of the diapers)
  • A variety pack of rubber bands
  • A wrapping paper tube or an empty paper towel roll (cut to 18”)
  • A 10” round cardboard cake board
  • A pair of scissors
  • Ribbon (1.5” to 2.5” wide)
  • Regular clear or double-sided tape
  • A hot glue gun and glue
  • Additional decorative elements, like bows or more baby products (optional)
  • A cake stand (optional)

Step 1: Assemble the Base

• Attach the wrapping paper or paper towel tube to your cardboard cake board using hot glue.

Step 2: Roll the Diapers

• Starting with the top of each diaper, roll the diaper so the design is inside the roll. Secure each diaper with a small rubber band.

Step 3: Assemble Your Diaper Cake Layers

• Begin the base layer by encircling the cardboard tube with six diapers. To secure it, wrap a rubber band around the diapers. Arrange the diapers so the end of each rolled-up diaper is pointed toward the center. That way, the roundest, most seamless part of the diaper shows on the outside.

• Next, circle the first layer with 12 more diapers and secure them with a large rubber band. Wrap the rubber band toward the end of each diaper closest to the cake base. This makes it easier to hide it with ribbon later on.

• Finish the bottom layer by securing 18 more diapers with another rubber band. The diapers may overhang the cake board slightly—this is fine.

• For the second tier, add six diapers on top of the base layer around the cardboard tube. Secure them with a rubber band.

• Next, add 12 more diapers around the first six. Keep them in place with a rubber band.

• For the top tier, surround the cardboard tube with seven diapers. Then secure them with a rubber band.

Step 4: Trim (As Needed)

• If extra cardboard tube is sticking out from the top (this will depend on the size and brand of diapers you use), use scissors to cut it off.

Step 5: Decorate Your Diaper Cake!

• Tape one end of the ribbon to a diaper, then tightly loop the ribbon around the whole tier, and tape or hot glue the ribbon on top of the starting point. For a cleaner look, you can use double-sided tape between the top and bottom layer of ribbon so no tape shows on the outside. Or, you can cover the ending point of the ribbon with a bow or another decorative adornment.

• Create a diaper cake topper by using large ribbon bows or even a small stuffed animal. Secure it with ribbon to hold it in place.

• Consider placing other baby items on or inside the tiers. Certain products, like burp cloths and onesies, can be rolled like diapers. Other objects, like pacifiers, can stick out from the tiers. Stay consistent with the theme and color scheme to create a cohesive look.

What do you top a diaper cake with?

Popular diaper cake toppers include ribbons, small stuffed animals and other baby products. For example, if you’re making a diaper cake for a woodland or safari themed shower, you might consider adding a small teddy bear, stuffed monkey or elephant to the top. These can be attached to a small blanket that’s tucked into the tube at the center of your diaper cake. You can also fold and add other baby items—like pacifiers, burp clothes, bibs and onesies—to the top of your diaper cake.

DIY Diaper Jeep Instructions

My husband loves to go “jeeping” with his friends. They usually go for the whole day and ride crazy trials with rocks and boulders. I stay home. Ha! Anyway, one of the guys recently had twin boys. So, my husband asked me if I could attempt to make a diaper Jeep. I was definitely up for the task.  With a little trial and error, I came up with these DIY diaper Jeep instructions to share with you.

I have made a golf themed diaper cake before and some diaper cupcakes.  It was fun to make so I figured I could take this on. Here are the materials and gifts I used.

  • Cardboard box

safari jeep diaper cake diy

  • Safety pins
  • Glue and glue gun
  • 4 Rubber bands

Baby Gifts:

  • 36 pack newborn diapers
  • 4 baby bottles
  • 4 receiving blankets

  • Various baby products (for Jeep cargo in the back)

Diaper Jeep Instructions:

Cutting the Cardboard Box

I used a rectangular cardboard box as shown. It worked great. I measured from the bottom up 6” and cut the top off. I also cut two strips for the Jeep rails and cut the front side off as shown.

Wrapping the Box

I used two receiving blankets for this step. One to wrap the box. I secured it with safety pins. A second blanket was used for the front hood of the Jeep. I folded it and wrapped it around.

Making the Tires

I used seven diapers per tire. Stagger five of the diapers and roll them holding them tightly. Wrap the other two diapers around each side and secure it with a rubber band. Next, wrap ribbon around the tire and secure it with tape.

Adding the Details

To make the jeep rails and mirrors, I wrapped the cardboard strips in black felt using a hot glue gun. Use duct tape to attach them to the Jeep. I also used black felt for the rear view mirrors, also taping them to the inside of the receiving blanket with duct tape.

diaper-jeep-instructions-decorating-and-details

I rolled the bottles in one receiving blanket for the headlights and placed five diapers vertically in between to form the grill. I place three diapers horizontally under the grill. Another receiving blanket was folded and placed over the headlights. I also inserted the Hyland’s bottles as small headlights under the bottles.

To attach the tires, I threaded ribbon through two of them and tied them around the hood and back of the Jeep.

Note: The Jeep wheels were not secure with just the ribbon, so I wrapped a piece of cardboard with wrapping paper to create a platform for the cake to stand on.

I also detailed the tires with the Jeep symbol as well as made Jeep license plates for the front and back. Lastly, I made a gift tag.

Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3

National origin:- Soviet Union Role:- Fighter Interceptor Manufacturer:- Mikoyan-Gurevich Designer:- First flight:- 29th October 1940 Introduction:- 1941 Status:- Retired 1945 Produced:- 1940-1941 Number built:- 3,422 Primary users:- Soviet Air Forces (VVS); Soviet Air Defence Forces (PVO); Soviet Naval Aviation Developed from:- Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-1 Variants:- Mikoyan-Gurevich I-211 Operational history MiG-3s were delivered to frontline fighter regiments beginning in the spring of 1941 and were a handful for pilots accustomed to the lower-performance and docile Polikarpov I-152 and I-153 biplanes and the Polikarpov I-16 monoplane. It remained tricky and demanding to fly even after the extensive improvements made over the MiG-1. Many fighter regiments had not kept pace in training pilots to handle the MiG and the rapid pace of deliveries resulted in many units having more MiGs than trained pilots during the German invasion. By 1 June 1941, 1,029 MIG-3s were on strength, but there were only 494 trained pilots. In contrast to the untrained pilots of the 31st Fighter Regiment, those of the 4th Fighter Regiment were able to claim three German high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft shot down before war broke out in June 1941. However high-altitude combat of this sort was to prove to be uncommon on the Eastern Front where most air-to-air engagements were at altitudes well below 5,000 metres (16,000 ft). At these altitudes the MiG-3 was outclassed by the Bf 109 in all respects, and even by other new Soviet fighters such as the Yakovlev Yak-1. Furthermore, the shortage of ground-attack aircraft in 1941 forced it into that role as well, for which it was totally unsuited. Pilot Alexander E. Shvarev recalled: "The Mig was perfect at altitudes of 4,000 m and above. But at lower altitudes it was, as they say, 'a cow'. That was the first weakness. The second was its armament: weapons failure dogged this aircraft. The third weakness was its gunsights, which were inaccurate: that's why we closed in as much as we could and fired point blank." On 22 June 1941, most MiG-3s and MiG-1s were in the border military districts of the Soviet Union. The Leningrad Military District had 164, 135 were in the Baltic Military District, 233 in the Western Special Military District, 190 in the Kiev Military District and 195 in the Odessa Military District for a total of 917 on hand, of which only 81 were non-operational. An additional 64 MiGs were assigned to Naval Aviation, 38 in the Air Force of the Baltic Fleet and 26 in the Air Force of the Black Sea Fleet. The 4th and 55th Fighter Regiments had most of the MiG-3s assigned to the Odessa Military District and their experiences on the first day of the war may be taken as typical. The 4th, an experienced unit, shot down a Romanian Bristol Blenheim reconnaissance bomber, confirmed by postwar research, and lost one aircraft which crashed into an obstacle on takeoff. The 55th was much less experienced with the MiG-3 and claimed three aircraft shot down, although recent research confirms only one German Henschel Hs 126 was 40% damaged, and suffered three pilots killed and nine aircraft lost. The most unusual case was the pair of MiG-3s dispatched from the 55th on a reconnaissance mission to PloieÅŸti that failed to properly calculate their fuel consumption and both were forced to land when they ran out of fuel. Most of the MiG-3s assigned to the interior military districts were transferred to the PVO where their lack of performance at low altitudes was not so important. On 10 July 299 were assigned to the PVO, the bulk of them belonging to the 6th PVO Corps at Moscow, while only 293 remained with the VVS, and 60 with the Naval Air Forces, a total of only 652 despite deliveries of several hundred aircraft. By 1 October, on the eve of the German offensive towards Moscow codenamed Operation Typhoon, only 257 were assigned to VVS units, 209 to the PVO, and 46 to the Navy, a total of only 512, a decrease of 140 fighters since 10 July, despite deliveries of over a thousand aircraft in the intervening period. By 5 December, the start of the Soviet counter-offensive that drove the Germans back from the gates of Moscow, the Navy had 33 MiGs on hand, the VVS 210, and the PVO 309. This was a total of 552, an increase of only 40 aircraft from 1 October. Over the winter of 1941-42 the Soviets transferred all of the remaining MiG-3s to the Navy and PVO so that on 1 May 1942 none were left on strength with the VVS. By 1 May 1942, Naval Aviation had 37 MiGs on strength, while the PVO had 323 on hand on 10 May. By 1 June 1944, the Navy had transferred all its aircraft to the PVO, which reported only 17 on its own strength, and all of those were gone by 1 January 1945. Undoubtedly more remained in training units and the like, but none were assigned to combat units by then.
