Escorted Tours to the Baltic States
The essence of the baltic states.
A trio of independent states, hemming the Baltic Sea, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia each have their own character, all share a haunting history, and boast beautiful landscapes and cultural landmarks; and yet they are surprisingly unsung and little visited.
Why choose a tour in the Baltic States?
Discover these Baltic beauties before the rest of the world joins in and crowds disturb the calm.
The largest and southernmost of the three, Lithuania , like its neighbours, regained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, but it had never really relinquished its independent spirit, age-old traditions, and unique folkloric legends.
With lakes, farmlands and forests cloaking its landscapes, the cultural hub of this unhurried country is its capital, Vilnius, a city of art and inspiration, Renaissance and neo-classical architecture. Seven centuries old, with a thoroughly modern mindset, it is peppered with churches, punctuated with cosy cafés and excellent eateries, and UNESCO listed for its Baroque, bewitching Old Town, the largest in Europe.
Latvia has endured a history of conquests across the 16 th to 20 th centuries, from Teutonic to Swedish and Russian occupation. It is a testament to Latvian determination that the country’s culture survived.
The capital, Riga, is its showcase of art and architecture, studded with monuments of its past, from the ostentatious Rundale Palace to the elegant art-nouveau enclave; the Dome Cathedral, the largest religious building in the Baltics; and the KGB headquarters, now the Museum of the Occupation. But it is Latvia’s ‘live for the moment’ ethos that marks its character, most notable in its feast of festivals.
The northernmost state is Estonia . With Baltic Sea beaches, swathes of forestry, pastoral miles, and picturesque towns, it is small in stature but big on beguiling diversity; and renowned for its welcoming people, and for seamlessly blending its cultural past and contemporary, convivial lifestyle.
These assets are nowhere more noticeable than in the medieval and modern mix of its capital, Tallinn, where the busy port city of Soviet-style buildings turns into a fairy-tale at Toompea Hill, a UNESCO World Heritage site. From its city walls to its Baroque splendour, colour-washed houses, cobbled streets, and skyline of turrets and domes, it is little changed since its Middle Ages heyday.
When to go on Baltic States holidays
With variations from north to south of the Baltic countries, in general, winter temperatures frequently fall below freezing; southerly winds bring cool weather to the months of spring, April-May; summers (June to August) are comfortably warm, averaging 23°; and the autumn average drops to around 14°.
Jules Verne has departures from April to early October, so you can choose the season that suits you best.
Who are Baltic States tours suited to?
Since emerging from the eras of Soviet rule, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have each recovered their respective customs and culture, and all regained the prosperity of their collective past. Now enjoying advanced economies and high living standards, together the Baltic States boast a 600km treasure trail through sumptuous natural landscapes and centuries of historic landmarks.
Unheralded and uncrowded, this region will enthral with its scenery, intrigue with its cultural sites, entertain with its ebullient nature, and entice with its cafés and cuisine, feeding both body and soul. If this sounds like your style, the Baltics will more than meet your expectations.
Why book Baltic States tours with Jules Verne?
With 45 years’ experience and a passion for creating extraordinary adventures, Jules Verne visits iconic landmarks and lesser-known sites, with expert tour guides who share their local knowledge, and show you hidden gems. Guests on our Baltic States journey can enjoy the spirit of Estonia, in every sense of the word, with a tasting of Vana Tallin liqueur; a recital at Riga’s cathedral, its 19 th -century organ boasting 6,718 pipes; and Lithuania’s local cui sine, from fried rye bread to ‘cold borscht’ soup, potato dumplings, and ‘tinginys’ cake.
Our guided tours to the Baltic States are ABTA and ATOL protected, and we offer a 100% price guarantee, so you can book with complete confidence.

Our trip was great
Hi Phil, Our trip was great. Everything we wanted and expected. We were met at exactly the stated times. Ivo was a fantastic guide, but Mati who drove us to Tartu was excellent. He went out of his way to find the cemetery I was looking for. This was the main reason for our trip. Overall we were very satisfied.

Visiting this region was once on a par with polar exploration and canoe trips up the Amazon. But no more!!!! The former “captive nations” of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, which won independence from the crumbling Soviet empire in 1991, are relishing their freedom. As Iron Curtain gloom gives way to Western-style prosperity, they’ve learned that an important ingredient in this new affluence is tourism.

The Finno-Ugric people migrated from the east and reached the shores of the Baltic around 3000 BC. During the following millennia they assimilated with the native people of the Kunda culture as well as North-Germanic and East-Slavonic people. In the 12th century AD, the local tribes developed into a more or less unified nation who called themselves “Maarahvas”. For centuries, Scandinavians, Germans, Poles, and Russians invaded the land. The Christianization was undertaken by German crusaders in the beginning of the 13th century and completed by 1220. During the middle ages, Estonia was an important link in the East-West Trade routes, and the towns of Tallinn, Tartu, Viljandi, and Parnu were members of the Hanseatic League. Estonia became a part of the Russian Empire in 1710. The name “Estonians” came to use in the middle of the 19th century along with the national awakening and the birth of Estonian nationhood. Between the two World Wars (1918 – 1940), Estonia was an independent republic. The Estonians finally regained their independence in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The word “Lithuania” was first mentioned in the Quedlinburg annals in 1009 A.D. In the 13th century the Lithuanian state was established. In the 15th century, the Lithuanian Grand Duchy became one of the most powerful medieval states of Eastern Europe. It covered the territory to the Black Sea in the south and almost to Moscow in the east. In 1569, a pact was concluded between Lithuania and Poland establishing a united state of Rzczpospolita. In 1795, after the final partition of Rzecpospolita, Lithuania was incorporated into Russia. For more than one century Lithuanians fought against tsarist oppression. In 1918, after the Bolshevik revolution, Lithuania proclaimed its independence and the restoration of Statehood. In 1940, Lithuania was occupied by the Soviet Union. After 50 years, Lithuania once again proclaimed its independence in 1990.
The various Latvian tribes functioned under local self-government until the end of the 13th century when the territory was conquered by the German Teutonic Knights. Latvia was subject to sporadic invasions by the Poles and the Swedes until the 18th century when Russia, under Peter the Great, emerged as a major European power. By 1795, the entire Latvian territory was under Russian control. The Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 heralded the end of Russian suzerainty and Latvia could assert its independence for the first time in over 600 years. In 1940, the Russians again took over, and Latvia was incorporated into the Soviet Union. Latvia’s independence was finally secured in August 1991, when the attempted coup in Moscow Failed.

Watches In The Wild The Road Through America, Episode 1: A Model Of Mass Production
As official timekeepers for the oldest car rally still running, Baltic is throwing it back to a time when watchmakers served the car community in a whole different way.
I know I'm not alone when I say that a lot of what I love about watches is the nostalgia of it all. It's also an overlooked part of what ties the love of watches and cars together; it's not just about mechanical objects but the romance of design. Last year, I got sucked deep into the nostalgia of both watches and the role they've played in automotive history when I visited Rennsport at Laguna Seca . It was great to see all the incredible cars, interesting watches, and awesome people drawn in by both. But one thing stuck in my mind more than most: dash timers.
That's right. Out of everything there, I spent a few extra minutes standing around the TAG Heuer booth, looking at the old rally timers on display and the new dash timer/clock pair in the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Panamericana unveiled in the booth. I thought to myself, "Why aren't people making these anymore?" And as with any time I see something good and nostalgic, I immediately pulled out my phone and start looking for deals on old Heuer dash timers.
The Heuer Carrera dash timer in the 718 Cayman GT4 RS Panamericana.
And the car that was obviously just made to justify a dash timer, right?
If you want a dash timer now, you've basically one great option on the market: Hanhart. But now, thanks to Baltic, you've got another. Really, that was the biggest surprise about the set I got to spend some time with a few weeks before the release. Baltic makes great watches, and when they tell you they've got a new chronograph, you generally know what to expect in the best possible way. Believe me, I own one. But when they told me they were taking their next limited edition release a step further with a dash timer, it was both a surprise and some dream come true for that nostalgia-driven part of my brain that tempts me to buy things I probably don't need but desperately want. First, there's a watch to talk about.
The idea for the new set from Baltic came in support of the brand's role as the official timekeeper for the Tour Auto 2024, a French road rally running April 21 to 27. The rally actually dates back to the Tour de France Automobile which started back in 1899, making it the oldest rally still in existence. This time, the route starts in Paris and ends in Biarritz, with stops to compete on the Le Mans, Val de Vienne, Nogaro, and Pau Arnos circuits. In a way, it's kind of funny to see such a young brand associated with such an old race, but through our chats, I've learned the team at Baltic are massive lovers of auto sport and automotive history.
Photo: courtesy of Baltic
Ari Vatanen. Photo: courtesy of Baltic
The crew is not only sponsoring the event but partaking in it. They have a BMW M1 with Baltic livery. Finish rally car legend and four-time Paris Dakar Rally-winner Ari Vatanen will be driving with the team. And while both cars and watches can be expensive hobbies, they don't have to be, as this commemorative chronograph shows.
Having handled a few of Baltic's three-register chronographs before, the first thing that struck me was the very nicely done, relatively subtle tricolore French theme. You've got a mix of red, white, and blue, all in slightly different hues around the watch. The colors they've chosen are harmonious enough that they don't clash, but soft enough that it doesn't smack you in the face of French nationalism the way a pair of "stars-and-stripes" shorts does.
The case measures 39.5mm by 13.5mm (with a large double-domed crystal making up 2.5mm of that height) and has a 47mm lug-to-lug with 20mm lug width. It's a pretty normal measurement range for a modern recreation of a classic design. Inside, there's a Sellita SW510-M manually-wound cam-style chronograph movement with a hacking running seconds at 9 o'clock, 30 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock, and a 12-hour counter at 6 o'clock. The watch runs at 28,800 vph with a 63-hour power reserve.
Commemorative watches like this are a great souvenir – you get one from Chopard for competing in the Mille Miglia if you're a paid participant. But the ways that brands choose to "theme" the watches or differentiate them between standard releases vary. Baltic has gone all-in not just on the tricolore accents but highlighting "Tour Auto" at the bottom of the dial. They've also put the rally logo on the caseback, which will also be where you'll find the numbered edition of the watch (out of a total of 500 pieces).
The rest continues the standard things I liked about the Chronograph I already have. Drilled lugs, solid pump pushers, decent winding action of the crown. The brushed aluminum bezel also has a bit of a nice faded quality to it already, with gold lettering giving another pop of color.
Even if you have drilled lugs that make changing straps a breeze, Baltic has also included a quick-change system on their stainless steel flat-link bracelets. For a bit of extra automotive styling, they've included a navy blue Alcantarra strap, which I thought was a nice touch. Even if I like wearing bracelets, I've started to dip my toes more into straps lately and the right strap makes all the difference.
Now, let's go back to the thing that really surprised me with this new limited edition set. Each box also comes with the aforementioned dash timer. The designs and layouts pair well with the chronograph I just showed you. The left module is a flyback chronograph with 30 30-minute counter and that French-flag-inspired design language. On the right is a super-legibile clock with a nice font selection that gives it a good retro appeal.
Baltic didn't do these alone, however. Remember how I mentioned that one brand has nearly cornered the market on the anachronistic mechanical dash timer? Well, the stopwatch with Flyback function is powered by a Hanhart mechanical movement. The action of the reset is a bit squishy – I found that I would occasionally not depress it all the way and it would only partially go back to zero. But in the heat of a race, I'd probably be gripping onto that sucker for dear life and clicking like my life depended on it.
The clock, on the other hand, is powered by a Seagull ST3600 Type 6497 movement. I don't have much to say about that, really. I set the clock, let it run, and it seemed to work just fine. You'll also note that the prototypes say "2023" on the bottom. Obviously, that will be updated for the release models. But the best fact for me is that the pair not only goes well together, but exists at all these days, let alone from a relatively young and affordable brand.
Let's talk price and release date. The sets will be available for sale on the Baltic website starting April 22 and 10 AM Eastern time for €2,100, which feels like a great deal for the set. The last Tri-compax I bought cost more than that and didn't come with a rally timer. So am I going to get one? Well, remember how I said this stuff falls into the category of things I want but don't necessarily need? I don't have a car right now, so the only dash it would be timing is my run from my desk and back to get coffee in the morning. Does it make me want it any less? Not really.
