Christianity is the most followed religion but there is a wide diversity of beliefs throughout the state.

English and Hawaiian

Where is Hawaii? Hawaii is the 50th state of the USA and the only one made up entirely of islands. Located in the Pacific Ocean 2400 miles south west of California, only seven of its 132 volcanic islands are inhabited – Oahu, Hawaii (Big Island), Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Kauai and Niihau. Its nickname is the Aloha State and its capital is Honolulu.

Oahu Head to Hawaii’s capital, Honolulu, on the island of Oahu for iconic Waikiki Beach escapades, whether you come for the winter swells or the tranquillity of the North Shore. Expect Polynesian flavour, luxury high-rise hotels, laid-back beach vibes, vibrant nightlife and beautiful beaches. It’s the place to come if you want to learn to surf, fancy hiking the legendary Diamond Head Walk or to go snorkelling in the crystal clear waters of Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. Lanikai Beach is a glorious stretch of golden sand perfect for families looking for kid friendly swimming and a more secluded spot where kayaking and paddle boarding is the norm. On Oahu there’s also a sombre reminder of Hawaii’s part in the Pacific War – travel west of Honolulu to visit the active military base of Pearl Harbour and see the Battleship Missouri Memorial, Pacific Aviation Museum and the USS Arizona Memorial. It’s also possible to visit the National Memorial Cemetery and the American-Florentine style Iolani Palace.

Hawaii The Island of Hawaii (Big Island) is the largest of the archipelago and alongside a perfect palette of white-sand beaches and blue seas lay hidden gems of black cliffs and volcanic landscape, green ferns and cascading waterfalls, gunpowder sands and white-capped mountains. Come here for the famous Hawaii Volcanoes Park, for stargazing under clear night skies on the summit of Mauna Kea (where astronomy students with telescopes will help you search out the constellations) and the wild forests of the Kohala coast. There’s the incredible olive-green sand beaches found at the end of South Point Road, sunset picnics overlooking the lava glow from the Kilaue Iki crater and the coffee scented hills of Kona’s Honaunau plantations. And there’s also championship golf courses and world-class scuba diving.

Maui The Valley Isle of Maui is where sunsets and sunrises meet in a whirlwind of majestic beauty over the iconic Haleakala Crater – the world’s largest dormant volcano. Take the winding road to Hana for verdant rainforests, head to the west side for lavish resorts and fantastic golf courses and make for the North Shore for an authentic taste of island life. Dive alongside sea turtles in Molokini’s underwater volcanic crater, head to the Iao Valley State Park for spellbinding views of the 1200-foot-tall ʻĪao Needle and follow the locals to Ho’okipa State Beach Park for world-class windsurfing, paddle boarding and snorkelling.

Kauai Rising 4000 feet above the Pacific Ocean, Kauai’s Na Pali Coast is the jewel of the Garden Isle. The choice of location for the filming of Jurassic Park, its rugged sea cliffs, white-sand beaches and extraordinary sea caves can be explored by boat, kayak and helicopter. Kauai is Hawaii’s oldest island and its natural wonders include Waimea Canyon, the Spouting Horn and the tropical valleys of Limahuli Garden and Preserve at the foot of Mount Makana. Kauai is an extraordinary island for honeymooners and couples with an enchanting mix of beautiful beaches and lush scenery.

Getting around Transport varies from island to island and depends largely on what you would like to do. If you’d like to explore further afield, you can hire a car or enjoy one of our hand-crafted tours taking you across the islands. If you’re just enjoying the beach and ocean, then relying on shuttles and taxis is the best option. The main islands have plenty of taxis with metred fares. On Oahu, TheBus takes you everywhere from downtown Honolulu to Pearl Harbour and the Waikiki Trolley will take you to most of the main sights. If you opt for a twin-centre holiday you can fly between the islands, and there’s also the option of taking a helicopter over coastline and volcanic landscape on both Kauai and the Big Island.

Food and drink Expect refreshing shave ice, famous Hawaii poke bowls and North Shore garlic shrimp and fresh Pacific Ocean seafood everywhere you go. There’s a generous amount of fresh fruit and vegetables on the islands, as well as side dishes of poi and the sweet dessert of Haupia. There are plenty of surf-inspired hot spots, award-winning restaurants, farm-to-table cuisine and candy coloured shrimp trucks lining the beaches. And you can’t leave Hawaii without experiencing a legendary luau feast. Drink plantation iced tea by day and mai tais by night and don’t forget those refreshing acai bowls to chow down on while at the beach.

Resort fees It is standard practice for resorts/hotels within the USA to charge a mandatory resort fee which is payable locally. This fee can be anywhere between 5USD to 40 USD per room per night and is not included in the cost of your Kuoni holiday.

Surfer off the coast of Kauaʻi, Hawaii

Hawaii holidays 2024 & 2025

A string of far-flung islands in the middle of the Pacific, Hawaii conjures up images of tropical paradises with soft, golden beaches, swaying palms and lei-wearing hula dancers. It’s all true, but at the same time there’s much more to this archipelago. Our specialists have explored beyond the obvious and can use their first-hand knowledge to help you plan a tailor-made holiday to Hawaii with a difference.

The powerful volcanic forces that created Hawaii’s islands are still felt today, from the bubbling lava fields of Volcanoes National Park to the black volcanic beaches, partially submerged craters and dormant volcanoes scattered across the six main islands: The island of Hawaiʻi , Oʻahu, Kauaʻi, Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi. The coastline in some places is so distinctive that it has captured the imagination of Hollywood film-makers, and precipitous cliffs rise from the ocean like natural cathedrals. Tangled rainforest streaming with waterfalls covers much of the islands’ interiors, while offshore you can swim among coral reefs and look for humpback whales.

Useful information for planning your holiday in Hawaii

Hawaiian and English are the official languages of Hawaii. You may also hear Hawaiian Creole English spoken, which is often called ‘Pidgin’ locally.

The currency of Hawaii is the US dollar (US$). All major credit cards are widely accepted, and you’ll find ATMs in most towns.

In Hawaii, you should try traditional dishes such as poke (marinated fish), manapua (steamed pork buns), and Huli-Huli chicken (chicken marinated in a soy glaze). Hawaiian food is influenced by traditions from Polynesia, China, and Japan and you’ll find everything from fish tacos to poi (mashed taro), and kālua pua’a (slow roasted pork) to haupia (coconut cream with arrowroot) on local menus.

Fresh juices, pineapple iced tea, and lots of fruity cocktails are also on offer.

Tips of between 15-20% are expected for all bar and restaurant services and about the same percentage should be applied to taxi fares.

For the latest travel advice for Hawaii, including entry requirements, health information, and the safety and security situation, please refer to the  Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office website .

Hawaii offers powder-soft beaches, big surf, lush rainforests, active volcanoes, and abundant marine life. While here, you could hike through forested gorges, go whale watching, or see hot lava pour into the sea. You could take a helicopter ride over a smouldering volcano, hike along coastal trails, snorkel with manta rays at night , or take on some of the biggest waves in the world. You can also take in the poignant history of Pearl Harbor , go stargazing at Mauna Kea’s observatory or visit smaller islands to learn about traditional culture in small villages.

Hawaii offers a great range of places to stay, from sleek beachfront resorts with a choice of pools, restaurants, and water sports to more intimate guesthouses with local character.

Many hotels offer cultural activities such as lei-making and ukulele playing, or traditional feasts with music and dance. For five-star comfort in a secluded location, you could stay in a cliff-top suite overlooking the ocean or a beachfront villa or cottage. For something more intimate, you could opt for a traditional Hawaiian guesthouse , a rainforest chalet , or a secluded B&B . For more ideas browse out selection of places to stay in Hawaii.

Hawaii has six main islands, but most visitors go to Oʻahu, the island of Hawaiʻi, or Maui. Oʻahu is the most visited island, home to Hawaii’s capital, Honolulu, as well as the surfing hotspot of Waikīkī Beach, volcanic tuff cones, botanical gardens, and Pearl Harbor.

On the island of Hawaii , you can laze on soft sand beaches or visit coffee plantations in the west and explore an active volcanic landscape with hissing craters and smoking fumaroles in the east.

For tropical rainforest, scenic drives, black-sand beaches, and pristine reefs, Maui offers adventure and relaxation in equal measure. On Kauaʻi , you could sail along the dramatic Nā Pali coastline, while Lānaʻi and Molokaʻi offer a glimpse of traditional Hawaiian life and Polynesian culture.

Respecting local culture and customs, protecting the environment, and supporting local businesses are the best ways to travel responsibly in Hawaii. Hawaii’s magnificent landscapes are a major draw, but with high visitor numbers even small actions can have a negative impact.

When out hiking stick to the trails and follow the signs. This protects you from danger, respects ancestral lands, and ensures habitats around the trails are left undisturbed.

Dispose of your litter properly and consider actively helping by joining a beach clean-up, for example. Don’t feed wildlife and actively seek out insect repellent and sunscreen that won’t harm wildlife or marine life.

We can also help you choose stays and experiences that do good in the local community, from certified sustainable hiking tours to whale watching adventures that support vital research and education. You can speak to your specialist to find out more.

It takes around 18 hours minimum to fly from the UK to Hawaii.

The time zone in Hawaii is UTC-10 hours. Daylight Savings Time is not observed.

The best way of getting around Hawaii is to combine car journeys with inter-island flights or boat trips. It’s easy to hire a car on the larger islands to drive between sights, but if you want to see more than one island you’ll need to fly or take an inter-island cruise.

UK citizens visiting Hawaii can travel on the Visa Waiver Program but must complete an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) application online. Visit the US Customs and Border Protection website  at least 72 hours before travel and fill in the required information. In most cases, you’ll receive a response within seconds. If the application isn’t authorised, then you can request a visa through a USA embassy or consulate.

If you have a British Subject (not British Citizen) passport, you’ll need to apply for a USA visa in advance from the US embassy. Passengers who have visited Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Iraq, North Korea, or Iran since March 2011, Cuba since 2021, or hold dual nationality for Iran, Iraq, Sudan, North Korea, or Syria are not eligible for the Visa Waiver Program, even if they hold a current ESTA. In this case, you must apply to a USA embassy or consulate for a visa.

To travel to Hawaii, you’ll need to have an ePassport that has at least two blank pages.

In Hawaii, you should be aware of local customs such as aloha, which is a way of life rather than just a greeting. Aloha means welcoming people, being friendly, and treating people with respect. This can mean anything from greeting people with a smile and taking the time to talk to them to driving without aggression.

Hawaiian customs also respect the land and wildlife, so don’t take rocks off beaches, hike off-trail, or feed wildlife. Hawaiian lei (flower garlands) are considered a sign of love and respect, so don’t throw them away when they wilt. Instead, take them apart and put any natural elements back into nature and then dispose of any plastic elements properly.

Hawaiian culture is all about respect for people, the land, and wildlife. Hawaiians like to ‘talk story’, to stop and have a conversation, so slow down and chat to people. Don’t speed on the roads or honk your horn while driving, and don’t refer to the continental US as the mainland. To Hawaiians, the Island of Hawaii is the mainland. Call places by the Hawaiian names, and if you’re invited to someone’s house, bring a small gift or some food and remove your shoes before entering.

Top 5 airlines serving from Gatwick to Hawaii

Seats too small. Really uncomfortable if neighbour is fat or simply selfish and invades your space.

The customers before boarding the plane from Dubai was HORRENDOUS. The entire Emirates staff had a stick up their bum. The guy at the check in booth was rude. I don’t understand.

Food is really bad, not to the Emirates standards. Coming out of Houston airport is very confusing,

Service needs to improve. Air hostess do not register flyers request and we need to keep on repeating our request to them on multiple occasions

The flight was great. We had to purchase extra long seats for the long flight. But overall it was great.

The experience was not as pleasant returning as leaving. Went through clearance twice, crew was not as customer focused.

Absolutely terrible delays for 3 hours changed seats after we paid an upgrade on both legs. It appears it’s up to us to request a refund after they down graded our seat. Never again !!

WORST AIRLINE EVER—FOOD WAS MEDIOCRE AND WIDEBODY 777 BOEING WAS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE! IT WAS NOT WORTH THE MONEY THAT I PAID.

They had superb boarding (started an hour before flight time). Timely pushback from them gate and an early arrival. Flight and service was very comfortable. I wanted to move my flight to an earlier one, only thing was there was no one at emirates in Heathrow to help. Had to call the call the center and pay to change. There were ample seats on the flight though

Amazing service and food. However I didn’t get chance to choose my own seat which bothered me a little.

More space all around is practically essential on long international fights, and Emirates definitely delivers. But food selection and taste was only average. Otherwise, the flight was smooth and the cabin crew service was fine.

On the flight back the seats where very uncomfortable, they where so bad that my back started to hurt after the first 2 hours. I can sit in a wooden chair for 2 hours. But these where just horrible, it just shows how cheap the airline has become. And the cabin was heated all those people in a heated cabin during a night flight. It was clear the climate control was not working. To top that off you are not even offered a glass of water, these people are animals.

We purchased a Go First Pass for 10 Euros each so we could board first, but everyone was able to board at the same time so we wasted 20 Euros. The flight left ab out 15 minutes late and was not allowed to land at Healthrow so we had to circle Heathrow for about 45 minutes. This caused us to almost miss our flight from Heathrow to Atlanta.

Severely delayed with no notice. Could have arrived at the airport hours later had we been informed of the delay

Once the boarding sign went on and all passengers gathered in line, we were left waiting standing up for almost an hour because there was a delay.

It would be nice to have vegan options for meals. The entertainment was not working on the the way to Austria. It was only available near the end of flight to Canada. The service was excellent.

Flight was delayed by approx 1 hour. The boarding process and the flight itself were very good, slightly tight squeeze for my legs but overall happy.

The business class layout on this plane is tightly packed and atrocious with no sense of privacy.

Flight was meant to leave at 8:30pm but there was a 2 hour delay 😞

Airmalta does not include meals in their flights and neither offers entertainment.

The trip itself was good. I have given only good as rating, because my first flight has been cancelled by a different airline and that caused disruption in my trip. I spent over ten hours in Luton airport and that caused me high tiredness, sickness, because of the very early initial trip. easyJet staff has been professional and friendly.

Very pleasant crew, working hard on a full plane. Delay by a broken seat. However crew made back 60% of the delay.

Delayed and then further delayed with no announcement made so that all the passengers (who were standing in the jetty) could hear. We stood there for well over 20 minutes. We were further delayed through weather but no one explained that to us until the pilot made an announcement when finally on board

easyJet need to ensure that whether pre-booking seats or not children aren’t split from their parents the crew spent the majority of boarding asking passengers to move to accommodate two families. Surely the system identifies minors on a booking !!!!! It was all very frustrating to watch and caused delays which I’m sure cost easyJet more in the long run rather that automatically allocating families with minors seats together automatically.

As you would expect from a budget airline Left and arrived on time, no frills, not even a glass of water offered But you get what you pay for

I had an emergency escape seat. The attendant gave the extrA briefing to my side of the aisle but didnt direct it at all to the other where my wife was sitting

Boarding great. Didn’t eat or drink so can not comment.

Total jobs worths over carry on bags, charged £96 extra for bags that were clearly hand luggage

3 hours delayed Don’t understand why when you have paid for ‘speedy boarding’ they call you forward to then make you stand fir another 20 minutes in a confined space before boarding the plane.

The pilot did everything possible to make up the 35 minute delay. His communications were honest, prompt and positive throughout.

The crew was very attentive and kept busy serving a variety of treats!

Offered vegetable curry when it was actually tofu which I don’t care for.

The flight was good the crew excellent…but take off delayed three hours!!!

Both mine and my husband's chairs were broken. Also it took 2 hours to get our bags after our flight which was wild.

perhaps eye contact with the cabin crew, instead of abruptness and an impatience to serve.

Not enough trash pickups throughout the flight. Everything else was great.

Overall good, the gluten free food is very hit/miss though and you must tell them you have an allergy days in advance.

All was good. The headphones they supply are of poor quality. The food is good but too much dairy.

Seating space was crowded and I am a very small woman.

Everything was great - but then had to wait one hour for my luggage in Verona…

For the full package, so much will depend on where in Hawaii , when, what class of airfare , and what class of hotel.

Best of luck, and the more info, you can provide, the better folk can help you.

Cheap hotel or high end resort?

High end restaurants or inexpensive food options?

Also, this is a travel forum.

I think you may be confused that this is travel agency. It's not.

Number of nights might be something important to include as well.

It's my first time posting on this forum and yes I'm aware that it's not a travel agency . We'd fly economy. Not sure which part to visit that's why I want to know other people's experiences and also, we're not too bothered about which part. We'd like to stay in an all inclusive 4 star resort, where we drink and eat on the all inclusive package for 10 days. We had originally set a budget of £4000 for our honeymoon but have been told that won't get us far.

If you would like to consider other things, then people can help you, otherwise you need to look somewhere else. And tell us anything in terms of cost in $US currency.
