Star Trek: Discovery's David Ajala On Cleveland Booker's Journey & Shooting The "Powerful" Series Finale

Star trek: discovery ends with 1 last spore drive mystery, star trek: discovery’s epilogue had 2 clever callbacks to the series premiere.

WARNING: Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery's Series Finale, "Life, Itself"

  • Cleveland Booker regains a piece of Kwejian's World Root in Star Trek: Discovery's finale, symbolizing his lost planet's connection to him.
  • Sanctuary Four, home to Book and Burnham 30 years later, thrives with Kwejian's World Root, reviving Kwejian's traditions and memories.
  • Kwejian's significance lies in its people's connection to the World Root, symbolizing unity and heritage for Book's renewed homeworld on Sanctuary Four.

Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) subtly gets his dead planet of Kwejian back in the series finale of Star Trek: Discovery . Book lost his home planet in Star Trek: Discovery season 4, episode 1, "Kobayashi Maru", when Kwejian fell in the path of the Dark Matter Anomaly. Book had only recently reconciled with his estranged family, and found peace in reconnecting with his brother, Kyheem (Ache Hernandez) and nephew, Leto (Luca Doulgeris). Before Book's eyes, the DMA tore apart Kwejian, and killed its millions of inhabitants. Rather than process his grief, Book relentlessly pursued vengeance against Species 10-C, the DMA's controllers.

Making reparations to the United Federation of Planets, Book helped the USS Discovery with the quest for the Progenitors' technology in Star Trek: Discovery season 5. When the USS Discovery arrives at the Eternal Gallery and Archive in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 8 , "Labyrinths", the Efrosian librarian Hy'Rell (Elena Juatco) asks Book to identify an artifact from Kwejian, so he accompanies Captain Michael Burnham to the Archive. There, Librarian Hy'Rell presents Book with a cutting of Kwejian's World Root, which survived Kwejian's destruction thanks to being housed in the Archive. Hy'Rell allows Booker to take the cutting, requesting only an update for the Eternal Gallery's records.

Screen Rant sat down with Star Trek: Discovery's David Ajala at MCM London Comic Con to discuss the series finale and reflect on Book's journey.

How Book Got His Dead Planet Back In Star Trek: Discovery’s Finale

Kwejian's world root thrives on book & burnham's new home.

In the Star Trek: Discovery series finale , "Life, Itself," Cleveland Booker's dead planet, Kwejian, is back, in a way, thanks to a piece of Kwejian's World Root surviving the planet's destruction. Discovery 's series finale epilogue takes place roughly 30 years later, and visits Cleveland Booker and Admiral Michael Burnham, enjoying married life at their home together. They live on the planet Sanctuary Four, which has an environment similar to Kwejian's, and hosts animals that Book liberated as a courier. Just past Book and Burnham's home, a tall tree grown from the Kwejian World Root is thriving , indicating that Book planted the cutting from the Eternal Gallery and Archive on Sanctuary Four.

The piece of Kwejian that grows on Sanctuary Four isn't a substitute for Book's lost homeworld, but the World Root connects Book to Kwejian and his people's traditions. Not just any plant, the World Root is a sacred organism that wound through the whole planet before Kwejian was destroyed, so the World Root isn't just a symbol of Kwejian -- it is Kwejian. The restored World Root tree is a symbol of how Kwejian lives on in Book's memory , so it's fitting that the opportunity to regrow the World Root tree came to Book only after Book had actually accepted his loss, and mourned the family that he had so recently reconnected with.

Sanctuary Four first appears in Star Trek: Discovery season 3, episode 1, "That Hope Is You, Part 1", when Book and Burnham take the liberated Kwejian trance worm Molly there to live. Molly is seen in "Life, Itself" with her new pod.

Why Book’s Homeworld Kwejian Is So Important To Him

The kwejian people are connected to the world root.

Cleveland Booker's homeworld of Kwejian is important to him because the Kwejian people are naturally connected to the land itself, and to the World Root, in particular. The Kwejian are stewards of their planet, dedicated to living in harmony with its flora and fauna, such that some Kwejian, like Book, possess a natural empathic ability that allows them to communicate with plants and animals. The World Root is the most significant of Kwejian's plants, connecting the Kwejian people to their ancestors and to each other , a living history of the planet's people stretching back for generations. A new World Root tree keeps their memories alive.

By planting the World Root on Sanctuary Four, Book revives his original home world Kwejian in a new planet , and with it, the ability to revive Kwejian traditions that emphasize Kwejian unity. Just before Kwejian's destruction, Book attended his nephew Leto's Iku Zhen ceremony, a rite of passage in which each Kwejian receives a pendant that contains the sap of the World Root Tree. Book wears his own Iku Zhen pendant, and also honors the memory of his family by naming his son, Captain Leto Burnham (Sawandi Wilson), after Book's nephew. Even though the original Kwejian was destroyed, Star Trek: Discovery ends with Book's homeworld subtly renewed on Sanctuary Four.

TOKYO (AP) — The incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans , including children, labeled enemies during World War II is an historical experience that has traumatized, and galvanized, the Japanese American community over the decades.

For George Takei, who portrayed Hikaru Sulu aboard the USS Enterprise in the “Star Trek” franchise, it’s a story he is determined to keep telling every opportunity he has.

“I consider it my mission in life to educate Americans on this chapter of American history,” he said in a recent interview with The Associated Press.

He fears the lesson about the failure of U.S. democracy hasn’t really been learned, even today, including among Japanese Americans.

“The shame of internment is the government’s. They’re the ones that did something unjust, cruel and inhuman. But so often the victims of the government actions take on the shame themselves,” he said.

Takei, 87, has a new picture book out for children ages 6 to 9 and their parents, called “My Lost Freedom.” It’s illustrated in soft watercolors by Michelle Lee.

Takei was 4 years old when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 on Feb. 19, 1942, two months after the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor , declaring anyone of Japanese descent an enemy of the United States and forcibly removing them from their West Coast homes.

Takei spent the next three years behind barbed wires, guarded by soldiers with guns, in three camps: the Santa Anita racetrack, which stunk of manure; Camp Rohwer in a marshland; and, from 1943, Tule Lake, a high-security segregation center for the “disloyal.”

“We were seen as different from other Americans. This was unfair. We were Americans, who had nothing to do with Pearl Harbor. Yet we were imprisoned behind barbed wires,” Takei writes in the book.

Throughout it all, his parents are portrayed as enduring the hardships with a quiet dignity. His mother sewed clothes for the children. They made chairs out of scrap lumber. They played baseball. They danced to Benny Goodman. For Christmas, they got a Santa who looked Japanese.

Takei’s is a remarkable story of resilience and a pursuit of justice, repeated throughout the Japanese American experience.

It’s a story that’s been told and retold, in books like the 1973 “Farewell to Manzanar” by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston; “Only What We Could Carry,” edited by Lawson Fusao Inada more than 20 years ago; and “The Literature of Japanese American Incarceration,” which just came out, compiled by Frank Abe and Floyd Cheung.

David Inoue, executive director of the Japanese American Citizens League, headquartered in Washington, D.C., believes the message of Takei’s book remains relevant.

He said discrimination persists today, as seen in the anti-Asian attacks that flared with the COVID-19 pandemic . Inoue said his son has been taunted in school in the same way he was growing up.

“One of the important things about having books like this is that it humanizes us. It tells stories about us that show we’re just like any other family. We like to play baseball. We have pets,” Inoue said.

Takei and his family were sent to Tule Lake in northern California because his parents answered “No” to key questions in a so-called loyalty questionnaire.

Question No. 27 asked if they were willing to serve in the U.S. armed forces. Question No. 28 asked whether they swore allegiance to the U.S. and would forswear allegiance to the Japanese emperor. Both were controversial questions for people who had been stripped of their basic civil rights and labeled enemies.

“Daddy and Mama both thought that the two questions were stupid,” Takei writes in “My Lost Freedom.”

“The only honest answers were No and No.”

Takei said the questions did not explain what would become of families with young children. The second question was also a no-win, he said, because his parents felt there was no loyalty to Japan to denounce.

Tule Lake was the largest of the 10 camps, holding 18,000 people.

Young men who answered “Yes” became part of the all-Japanese American 442nd Regimental Combat Team, which fought in Europe while their families remained incarcerated. The 442, with their famous “Go for Broke” motto, is the most decorated unit of its size and length of service in U.S. military history.

“They were determined to prove themselves and get their families out of barbed wires,” Takei said. “They are our heroes. I know I owe so much to them.”

After Japan surrendered, Takei and his family, like all Japanese Americans freed from the camps , were each given $25 and a one-way ticket to anywhere in the U.S. Takei’s family chose to start all over again in Los Angeles.

In 1988, the Civil Liberties Act — after years of effort and testimonies by Japanese Americans, including Takei — granted redress of $20,000 and a formal presidential apology to every surviving U.S. citizen or legal resident immigrant of Japanese ancestry incarcerated during World War II.

Takei’s voice became choked when he recalled how his father did not live to see it.

He noted with pride the diversity depicted in “Star Trek,” a TV series that started in the mid-1960s and developed a devout following. There, the crew that flew together through the galaxies was of various backgrounds.

“Star Trek” writer, creator and producer Gene Roddenberry wanted to portray the turbulent times and the civil rights movement on a TV show but had to do it metaphorically to make it acceptable, Takei said.

“Different people, different ideas, different taste, different food. He wanted to make that statement. Each of the characters was supposed to represent a part of this planet,” Takei said.

Takei recalled how his father taught him how the government “of the people, by the people and for the people,” as Abraham Lincoln put it in his Gettysburg Address, could also prove a weakness.

“All people are fallible, even a great president like Roosevelt. He got stampeded by the hysteria of the time, the racism of the time. And he signed Executive Order 9066,” Takei said.

Nasa launches second small climate satellite to study earth’s poles, jennifer m. dooren, nasa headquarters, jet propulsion laboratory.

trek planet ventura 4

Editor’s note: This release was updated June 6, 2024, to correct the launch time in the photo caption.

The second of NASA’s PREFIRE (Polar Radiant Energy in the Far-InfraRed Experiment) two satellites is communicating with ground controllers after launching at 3:15 p.m. NZST, Wednesday (11:15 p.m. EDT, June 4). Data from these two shoebox-size cube satellites, or CubeSats, will better predict how Earth’s ice, seas, and weather will change in a warming world — providing information to help humanity thrive on our changing planet.

The CubeSat launched on top Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket from the company’s Launch Complex 1 in Māhia, New Zealand, and follows the May 25 launch of the first PREFIRE CubeSat. After a 30-day checkout period, when engineers and scientists confirm both CubeSats are operating normally, the mission is expected to operate for 10 months.

“By helping to clarify the role that Earth’s polar regions play in regulating our planet’s energy budget, the PREFIRE mission will ultimately help improve climate and ice models,” said Amanda Whitehurst, PREFIRE program executive, at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “Improved models will benefit humanity by giving us a better idea of how our climate and weather patterns will change in the coming years.”

Capitalizing on NASA’s unique vantage point in space, PREFIRE will help understand the balance between incoming heat energy from the Sun and the outgoing heat given off at Earth’s poles. The Arctic and Antarctica act something like the radiator in a car’s engine shedding much of the heat initially absorbed at the tropics back into space. The majority of that heat is emitted as far-infrared radiation. The water vapor content of the atmosphere, along with the presence, structure, and composition of clouds, influences the amount of radiation that escapes into space from the poles.

The PREFIRE mission will give researchers information on where and when far-infrared energy radiates from the Arctic and Antarctic environments into space. The mission also will use its two CubeSats in asynchronous, near-polar orbits to study how relatively short-lived phenomena like cloud formation, moisture changes, and ice sheet melt affect far-infrared emissions over time. The two satellites pass over the same part of Earth at different times of day, giving researchers information on changing conditions.

“Climate change is reshaping our environment and atmosphere in ways that we need to prepare for,” said Brian Drouin, PREFIRE’s deputy principal investigator at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. “This mission will give us new measurements of the far-infrared wavelengths being emitted from Earth’s poles, which we can use to improve climate and weather models and help people around the world deal with the consequences of climate change.”

Each CubeSat carries an instrument called a thermal infrared spectrometer, which uses specially shaped mirrors and sensors to measure infrared wavelengths. Miniaturizing the instruments to fit on CubeSats required downsizing some parts while scaling up other components.

“Equipped with advanced infrared sensors that are more sensitive than any similar instrument, the PREFIRE CubeSats will help us better understand Earth’s polar regions and improve our climate models,” said Laurie Leshin, director at NASA JPL. “Their observations will lead to more accurate predictions about sea level rise, weather patterns, and changes in snow and ice cover, which will help us navigate the challenges of a warming world.”

NASA’s Launch Services Program, based out of the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, in partnership with NASA’s Earth System Science Pathfinder Program, is providing the launch service as part of the agency’s Venture-class Acquisition of Dedicated and Rideshare ( VADR ) launch services contract.

The PREFIRE mission was jointly developed by NASA and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. NASA JPL manages the mission for the agency’s Science Mission Directorate and provided the spectrometers. Blue Canyon Technologies built the CubeSats and the University of Wisconsin-Madison will process the data the instruments collect. The launch services provider is Rocket Lab USA Inc. of Long Beach, California.

Manu-Facts:

Venture RV Logo

Venture RV offers a wide variety of lightweight and ultra-lightweight travel trailers to suit every family’s needs. We’re camping fanatics; Venture recreational vehicles are designed and built by people who actually use the products we offer our customers. And because of that, we’re hyper critical of the camping experiences we have in our own RVs, and design function and economy into every vehicle we produce. Also, we are also a company committed to community involvement, and endeavor to be good local neighbors.

Venture RV’s parent company is K.Z., Inc., a subsidiary of Thor Industries, Inc. K-Z got its start building truck campers in 1972, quickly added Sportsmen ® travel trailers to the lineup, and has never looked back. We added the Venture line of lightweight towables several years ago, and immediately realized we’d filled a previously unsupported void in the marketplace. Our facilities cover over 530,000 square feet of manufacturing and office space, and house close to 400 employees.

Those employees represent a labor force that is one of the most stable in our industry. A low turnover rate plus our employee’s superior work ethics equals the highest-quality products for our customers. That’s why we’ve received the coveted RVDA Dealer Satisfaction Index for the past 18 years running. No other travel trailer manufacturer has achieved that accomplishment.
