Current Ryder Cup standings for Team USA and Europe

Let’s look at how the teams currently look in the 2023 Ryder Cup standings, the pinnacle of team golf, being held in Italy at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome.

Team Europe, captained by Luke Donald , will host Zach Johnson’s Team USA in the showpiece event from September 29 – October 1, 2023, as the visitors defend the trophy they won so convincingly at Whistling Straits in 2021.

Let’s see how the Ryder Cup teams are lining up and how players can book their place on the 12-man teams for the 44th edition of golf’s biggest team event.

Qualification for the European team for the 2023 Ryder Cup started after the 2022 BMW PGA Championship on September 11, and runs until September 3, 2023.

The big change for this year is that skipper Donald will have six Captain’s Picks to make instead of the three Padraig Harrington had for the last Ryder Cup in Wisconsin.

Automatic Ryder Cup qualification will still come from two points lists, but this time just three players will qualify from the European Points List, with a further three qualifiers being the top three on the World Points List that aren’t already qualified.

Team USA 2023 Ryder Cup standings & qualification

Zach Johnson named USA Ryder Cup captain for the 2023 match in Rome, Italy

Team USA had six Captain’s Picks for the last Ryder Cup, which worked out rather well, so Johnson will have the same option this time around.

The American Ryder Cup qualification system comprises of just one qualifying list, with points allocated over a longer stretch of golf – with seven big events in 2022 including the four Majors having points attached to them.

Ryder Cup qualification points are then awarded at all PGA Tour events from January 2023 with double points awarded for winners of the four Majors.

Ryder Cup 2023: Team Europe latest qualification standings as Robert MacIntyre looks to seal final spot

There is just one week to go before the European side for the Ryder Cup in Rome is confirmed.

Team Europe get their chance to win the trophy back in September, when they welcome the American side to Italy. The return to home comforts is a welcome one - it’s now 30 years since the United States last came to Europe and won.

Jon Rahm will be a key component of that team, though his form has slowed down somewhat after a stunning start to the year saw him become the fourth Spanish player to put on the Green Jacket. Rory McIlroy , Viktor Hovland, Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood will all be on the team too.

Robert MacIntyre pushed McIlroy all the way at the Scottish Open earlier this summer and while it was not enough for a win in front of his home fans, it moved him up into an automatic qualifying position in the European standings.

He remains there heading into this week’s Omega European Masters, the final event before captain Luke Donald confirms his team on September 4. Yannik Paul and Adrian Meronk are among those looking to pip MacIntyre and ensure they are not relying on Donald.

The European captain will have six picks later when confirming his European team, double the amount Padraig Harrington had in Wisconsin.

Qualification for Team Europe began at the BMW PGA Championship in September last year. The top three on the European Points List will be earn their spots on the team, as will the top three on the World Points List who have not already qualified through the European standings.

Here’s how the qualification process is looking for Team Europe...

2021 USA, European Ryder Cup Standings: The Final Sprint

Justin Thomas Jordan Spieth Ryder Cup

The 43rd Ryder Cup, originally set for the fall of 2020, was reschedule due to the COVID-19 scare. The new date is Sept. 21-26, 2021 at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin.

The points system for the U.S. team will decide the top six players with Captain Steve Stricker choosing the final six. (Previously it was eight via points, and four captain’s picks.)

Stricker will announced his at-large selections following the 2021 TOUR Championship at East Lake.

Currently the top six players are Collin Morikawa, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas and Xander Schauffele, in that order.

Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed, Harris English and Patrick Cantlay round out the top 10.

Spieth and Reed are considered to be locks while English and Cantlay, both two-time winners this season, strong bets to make the team too.

Paul Casey Brooks Koepka Ryder Cup

The European team will be decided using the top nine players from two lists: the European Points (four) and Official World Golf Ranking Points (five). Captain Padraig Harrington will choose the final three.

Harrington will announce his at-large selections on Monday, September 13, 2021, following the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

As it stands Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton and Matt Fitzpatrick fill the automatic places on the European Points List.

Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, Paul Casey, Lee Westwood and Shane Lowry currently occupy the OWGR spots.

Ian Poulter is said to be a lock as one of Harrington’s three picks with Sergio Garcia and/or Justin Rose filling a spot as well. So the battle for the final one or two spots will be amongst players on the bubble like Bernd Wiesberger, Victor Perez, Robert MacIntyre and Guido Migliozzi.

2023 Ryder Cup results, scores, standings: Europe thrills while dismantling U.S., takes historic Day 1 lead

The americans failed to win a single match as the europeans firmly planted their flag at marco simone in rome.

untitled-design-22-1.png

A relatively quiet morning filled with European flags set the stage for fireworks in the afternoon session of the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club. After falling down 4-0, the United States battled back and looked poised to trim its disadvantage in a significant manner. Instead, a late charge from Europe's top players staved off the visiting team.

The Europeans erased American leads in three four-ball matches to end Day 1 at the Ryder Cup with a dominant 6.5 to 1.5 lead .

The five-point advantage ties the largest lead for either side after Day 1 in Ryder Cup history. Friday also marks the first time the United States has completed the first day without winning a match; the Americans' 1.5 points are from three ties in four-ball matches they previously led.

Europe also became just the second team in Ryder Cup history to start the event 5 to 0, joining the 1947 United States side. It did so by leaning heavily on its stars -- and they delivered when the lights were the brightest.

Rory McIlroy & Matt Fitzpatrick made mincemeat of Xander Schauffele & Collin Morikawa in the anchor four-ball match, while Viktor Hovland and Jon Rahm -- playing separately -- simply ripped out the hearts of the Americans time and again across both Day 1 sessions.

The U.S. eyed a 3 to 1 four-ball session victory with American flags flying in the first two matches only for Hovland and Rahm to summon clutch short games that stamped out the flame. It began with a chip-in eagle courtesy of the Spaniard on the par-4 16th -- his fourth hole-out from off the green between his two matches.

This squared Rahm & Nicolai Hojgaard, who signed for seven birdies of his own in his Ryder Cup debut, with Brooks Koepka & Scottie Scheffler. A key birdie conversion from Scheffler on the 17th gave U.S. a chance for a massive full point in the second match as the Americans went to the 18th with a 1 UP edge.

They were stuck in the fairway as Hovland and Justin Thomas faced birdie bids on the green below. As he has all summer long, the fist-pumping Norwegian delivered a mighty blow from just outside 25 feet. Thomas followed and calmly rolled his putt in to secure the first half point for the U.S., but it could have been much more as Thomas & Jordan Spieth held a 2 UP lead with five holes to play before the Texan's swing unraveled.

"It was about time the ball went in," said Hovland. "I felt like we played some really good golf today, and the Americans played some great golf as well, and they kept pushing us, and yeah, to make a putt like that on the last hole that was huge for the team."

After hitting his approach to the front of the putting surface, Rahm waited. Koepka played a saucy little chip from the right rough to set up a birdie opportunity inside 5 feet. It was thought this would be to win the match as Rahm faced an unlikely eagle putt.

But nothing is unlikely for Rahm, and nothing was off the table for the two-time major champion on and around the greens Friday. Striking his putt with conviction, Rahm hit his line and would hit the back of the cup, bouncing up in the air and into the middle of the bottom of the cup from outside 33 feet for his second eagle in the last three holes.

He let out a chuckle, and it will undoubtedly be the Europeans laughing tonight with a commanding 6.5 to 1.5 edge.

Justin Rose added insult to injury late overcoming a two-hole deficit with two holes to play. Rose & Robert MacIntyre ultimately pulled even with Max Homa & Wyndham Clark. With his birdie on the last, Rose made sure the U.S. went without a victory across the first eight matches.

"You got 28 points, eight are done, so we got 20 more points," said U.S. captain Zach Johnson. "Really, we've just kind of started the second quarter, or you could argue you're on your fourth, fifth hole. A lot of golf left. A lot of opportunity left. And I'm confident in that because these guys are for each other, they're for the common goal, which is to go out there and show off, do it with class, do it with character and obviously nothing but that."

Fending off an American barrage, Europe scratched out a win in the afternoon four-ball session. There is plenty of golf to be played, but Friday four-ball felt like the Americans' best punch. The Europeans dodged it with grace and are now in line to extend their 30-year home winning streak.

Here is a breakdown of each match from Day 1 of the 2023 Ryder Cup.

2023 Ryder Cup results, Day 1 | Europe 6.5, U.S. 1.5

Session 1 -- foursomes | europe 4, u.s. 0.

Match 1 | Rahm & Hatton 4&3 over Scheffler & Burns:  The Americans trotted out the world No. 1 and his mullet-sporting friend, and they were met with a pair of fiery Europeans. Three birdies across the first seven holes from the home team saw the lead build to 2 UP. Scheffler and Burns did well to stay within touching distance and had a chance to trim the match to one with the Europeans in trouble on No. 10. However, when they needed it the most, Rahm delivered in the form of a chip-in par to tie the hole and suck the air out of the American sails.

Match 2 | Hovland & Aberg 4&3 over Homa & Harman:  Hovland welcomed the other three rookies in this match with a chip-in birdie on the first hole. The FedEx Cup champion set the tone for the rest of the day throwing a flurry of fist pumps and bailing out Aberg early as he traversed early nerves. The Swede got into the action with some crucial putts including a birdie bid on No. 9 to grab a 3 UP lead. Their ball striking proved to be too much for the Americans to mount any sort of comeback.

Match 3 | Lowry & Straka 2&1 over Morikawa & Fowler:  The third match of the morning looked more like a ground-and-pound Big Ten football game. The golf wasn't high quality from either side with Fowler & Morikawa's front-nine 3-over 38 causing them fall behind four holes at the turn. Both Americans had their shortcomings, but it was Fowler's inability to cash in on the greens that ultimately tipped the scales in the European's favor. Straka's birdie putt on the par-5 12th to tie the hole when the Americans were in tight for eagle was the final blow before he polished off the match on the 17th.

Match 4 | McIlroy & Fleetwood 2&1 over Cantlay & Schauffele:  Four heavyweights stepped into the arena, and the most competitive contest was the result. McIlroy & Fleetwood hit the cover off the golf ball all morning, and a poor shot from Cantlay on the par-4 8th allowed them to grab the lead heading into the inward half. An American birdie on the 14th trimmed the lead to one. Cantlay & Schauffele looked keen to square up the match on the 15th when they faced 25 feet for birdie and McIlroy & Fleetwood still had 20 feet for par. Fleetwood's par conversion made Schauffele's tickler longer, and the often-reliable putter lipped his effort, effectively nixing the U.S. chances in the match. McIlroy ended the affairs in emphatic fashion with a laser into the par-3 17th to set up the team's fifth birdie.

Session 2 -- Four-ball | Europe 2.5, U.S. 1.5

Match 5 | Spieth & Thomas TIED Hovland & Hatton:  The worst-kept secret was that Spieth & Thomas would lead off the afternoon session, and Luke Donald matched with two heavy hitters. It was a tight contest throughout as they went to the par-5 12th tied. The Americans tacked on another win with Spieth's birdie on 13, but the three-time major champion vanished near after. This left the load on Thomas, who answered the bell but was overpowered by Hovland & Hatton. Squandering a 2 UP lead with five to play, the Americans will have a bad taste in their mouths at dinner while the Europeans know they just got away with a heist.

Match 6 | Koepka & Spieth TIED Rahm & Hojgaard:  Jon Rahm caught fire late, but the Europeans wouldn't have been in the position if it wasn't for the 22-year-old Dane. Hojgaard was absolute nails in his first Ryder Cup match as he carried the Spaniard on the front side and took it to Koepka & Scheffler on his own. The match was tied through 11 before Koepka began to peak his head. Back-to-back birdies from the five-time major champion signaled his arrival and gave the U.S. a late edge. Rahm's eagles on 16 and 18 sandwiched Scheffler's birdie on 17 to put a bow on an all-time classic.

Match 7 | Homa & Clark TIED Rose & MacIntyre:  The Americans grabbed the first 2 UP lead for their team with a birdie on the par-4 9th, but the Europeans would not go quietly into the night. Rose was vintage down the stretch. Simply vintage. The oldest man in the competition won three of the final four holes on his own to take a sure-fire American flag off the board and tie the match. If Hovland & Rahm didn't break the back of the Americans, Rose may have done it here.

Match 8 | McIlroy & Fitzpatrick 5&3 over Schauffele & Morikawa:  This one was over early. McIlroy assumed the role of spectator and allowed Fitzpatrick to shine. The Englishman who came into the competition with a 0-5-0 record -- and without a four-ball match under his belt -- made his presence felt immediately. Fitzpatrick made over 100 feet worth of putts in his first six holes to get to 6 under on his own ball. McIlroy got in on the fun with a birdie of his own on the par-3 7th to build their lead to 6 UP. The Americans fought hard around the turn, but the rest of the match was a formality.

U.S. must get full point from Homa and Clark

Homa will face 10 feet for birdie on the last to more than likely win the match. He must get it and make sure the U.S. does not fall further behind. A win would put it 6 to 2 in the European's favor after Day 1.

Jon Rahm, take a bow!

Oh my goodness, Jon Rahm. His ball was magnetized to the hole today. He eagles 16 to tie the match and then eagles the 18th to secure half a point for Europe. That is a MASSIVE blow for the U.S. They came to the 18 today thinking they could grab two points, but instead they grab only one.

Rory and Fitzpatrick wrap up early

Europe grabs another point, and it is courtesy of a rout in the final match. Rory and Fitzptarick got out to a 6 UP lead early and never looked back. They lead the session 1.5 to 0.5 with two matches on the course.

What a match! Match 1 ends in TIE

Justin Thomas and Viktor Hovland trade birdies on 18. Hovland connects from 26 feet before Justin Thomas converts from 6 feet. What a fun match to watch. U.S. would have wanted more, but Spieth fell off a cliff the last five holes and Thomas did all he could.

Scottie secures half point

The U.S. will not get shut out! Scottie Scheffler converts his birdie on the par-3 17th from six feet to take his match 1 UP to the 18th. The putter has been much improved today, and it arrives at a clutch moment.

Jon Rahm is his name

ANOTHER CHIP-IN for Jon Rahm, and it comes at a timely moment. He squares the match with Brooks Koepka and Scottie Scheffler with two holes to play. He takes red off the board in emphatic fashion. It is his fourth hole out of the day.

Match No. 1 all tied

A birdie from Hatton and a par from Thomas has set the stage for the best finish of the day. A very tense opening match is all tied with two holes to play. The Americans have to have it.

Brooks Koepka has arrived

After a very slow start, the five-time major champion is making his presence known. Back-to-back birdies have the Americans 1 UP and with three U.S. flags on the board. Massive stuff from one of the best winners of the last decade.

Big putts from the Americans

Justin Thomas converts a nifty up-and-down to maintain a 1 UP lead over Viktor Hovland and Jordan Spieth with three holes to play. Meanwhile, Wyndham Clark connects from distance to build his lead to 2 UP. Big putts were needed, and big putts were had.

Hatton/Hovland inch closer

If the Europeans can somehow flip the first match, it would be crushing for the Americans. They have it to 1 DOWN after both Thomas and Spieth make bogey on the 14th. This ending stretch of the golf course is conducive for fireworks.

2023 Ryder Cup: Shane Lowry Included In Team Europe

2023 Ryder Cup: Shane Lowry Included In Team Europe

The Ryder Cup is set to commence at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome, Italy from September 29 to October 1, 2023. Our guide to the 2023 Ryder Cup Europe standings will give you everything you need to know about how the 2023 Ryder Cup team will be chosen, and which players have already sealed automatic qualifying positions, as we head into the final day before the team is announced.

The European Ryder Cup team will be captained by Luke Donald when they compete against the United States in September. The 2021 European Ryder Cup team featured Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy and, after McIlroy's place on the 2023 team was confirmed this month, we hope there'll be at least two Irish golfers involved this year.

How will the 2023 European Ryder Cup team be chosen?

The qualification process for the 2023 European Ryder Cup team goes like this:

There are six automatic selections and six captain's choices. The top three ranked golfers from both the European and World points list will automatically qualify for a spot on the team.

When will the European Ryder Cup team be named?

Qualification for Team Europe began last September and the deadline for qualification ended last weekend after the Omega European Masters in Switzerland. Luke Donald named his six captain picks today at 2pm.

What are 2023 Ryder Cup Team Europe standings?

After last weekend's Omega European Masters in Switzerland, the top six players who qualified automatically are as follows:

  • Jon Rahm (Spain) - confirmed
  • Rory McIlroy (Ireland) - confirmed
  • Robert MacIntyre (Scottish) - confirmed
  • Viktor Hovland (Norway) - confirmed
  • Tyrrell Hatton (England) - confirmed
  • Matt Fitzpatrick (England) - confirmed

Both lists were last updated on 27/8/23

Luke Donald's Six Captain Picks for Team Europe

  • Tommy Fleetwood
  • Shane Lowry
  • Ludvig Aberg
  • Sepp Straka
  • Justin Rose
  • Nicolai Hojgaard

Where do things stand heading into the final day of captain selection for the European team?

Shane Lowry posted a disappointing missed cut in Prague last weekend, meaning he can no longer qualify automatically.

This means he'll be relying on Luke Donald for a captain's pick.

Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy were the first two European players to confirm their place on the team, qualifying through the European points list. Viktor Hovland has joined them as the third member.

Following Sunday's Tour Championship results, Tyrell Hatton is also effectively qualified for the team.

🚨BREAKING @TyrrellHatton is now QUALIFIED for @RyderCupEurope via the World Points list! #GoEurope 🇪🇺 — Nosferatu (@VC606) August 28, 2023

MacIntrye will be looking to hold that final automatic qualifying spot at the European Masters in Switzerland this weekend. Matt Fitzpatrick pipped Tommy Fleetwood for his automatic spot after an impressive showing in Switzerland last week.

After months of positions being interchanged, the first six on on the Team Europe Ryder Cup have been sealed. The six who gained automatic qualification are McIlroy, Rahm, Hovland, Hatton, MacIntyre and Fitzpatrick are the automatic qualifiers.

Tommy Fleetwood and Sepp Straka are certain captain's picks. Shane Lowry and Justin Rose are two players who many believe will be chosen on the strength of past performance, with Donald left to choose between the likes of Adrian Meronk, Yannick Paul, Rasmus Hojgaard (who finished 3rd in Prague) and young Swede Ludvig Aberg for the final two slots.

Note that Europe's LIV golfers - Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter, for example - cannot be selected.

How Do Players Finish In The Top 3 Of The European and World Tour Points List?

Players gain points from competing in their respective tours and performing well.

Points are available from partaking and winning tournaments, however, not all the tournaments throughout the year, carry the same amount of points.

Ryder Cup European Point List

Who is Team Europe's Captain For The 2023 Ryder Cup?

Luke Donald was named as the European Captain for the 2023 Ryder Cup back in August of last year.

The English golfer is a fountain of knowledge and experience when it comes to the Ryder Cup.

He represented Europe in the Ryder Cup four times as a player, being on the winning team in each of his four appearances at the cup.

Donald was a part of the 2012 Ryder Cup, where he led Team Europe out in the singles, gaining the first blue point on the board in the 'Miracle of Medinah '.

Apart from the six selected from the Ryder Cup Europe standings, he will also pick six more players to join his team as captain picks.

Irish contenders who have missed out on the 2023 Ryder Cup

Seamus Power's best route for automatic qualification was on the world tour as he was ranked 13th in the standings, though he continued to drift further and further away from an automatic qualification spot, resulting in him missing out on a place.

Padraig Harrington is looking less likely to be picked for the 2023 Ryder Cup. As the table stands Harrington ranks very low on both tables for the Ryder Cup Europe standings. If Harrington was to be picked to feature on Team Europe it was looking like it wou ld have to be through the captain's picks and not automatic qualification, which unfortunately he was not picked by Luke Donald for.

2023 Ryder Cup - Team USA

Similar to the way European players are selected, Players from the USA can earn a slot on the US team by performing well in this year's golf tournaments and gathering points.

Similarly to the Ryder Cup Europe standings, the top six players with the most points secure a spot on the U.S. team, while the other six slots similar to Europe will be Captain's selections

US Rankings

The six automatic qualifiers for the US Ryder Cup team were officially confirmed on Sunday with the conclusion of the BMW Championship. Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, Patrick Cantlay, Max Homa, and Xander Schauffele will be joined by six captain's picks from captain Zach Johnson.

The DP World Tour says LIV players would have to assume a significant financial penalty to play in the Ryder Cup

Jon Rahm finished the LIV Adelaide in third position and is a little closer to a victory that still evades him on the 54-hole circuit, but he might be handling a bigger problem instead as the new CEO of the DP European Tour insists LIV players will be fined if they want to play in the Ryder Cup .

Guy Kinnings , the newly appointed executive director of the DP World Tour (DPWT), has explained the situation of Jon Rahm for the next Ryder Cup, along with other LIV players, which will take place in September 2025 at the New York course of Bethpage.

european tour ryder cup standings

"If we look at the eligibility criteria for 2023," Kinnings said to media. "I think there has been a slight misunderstanding. The reality is that, under the current system, if a player is European and is a member of the DP World Tour and complies with the current rules, he is eligible.

"If he does not get that release, he will have sanctions (economic and sporting), so the player must accept those sanctions. And if he accepts the sanctions, there is no reason why a player who has become a member of LIV and has maintained his DP World Tour membership cannot either qualify [like Koepka last year on the US team] or be available for selection.

"It is a mistake to think that Jon Rahm has been excluded from the Ryder Cup," Kinnings added. "People [ Rory McIlroy ] immediately thought we would have to change the rules, but in reality, we don't have to. If Jon follows the procedures in place, there is no reason why he would not be eligible for the 2025 Ryder Cup."

As of today, the PIF (Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia) and the PGA Tour/DPWT are still negotiating an agreement that would bring true peace to the world of golf and even propitiate the entry of the LIV players in the world ranking.

The latter, something that would open a door for its members to be able to compete in the majors and the Ryder Cup too. But in case this door remains closed, Kinnings has explained that Rahm still has the same entry requirements to dispute the Ryder Cup.

Another nuance that Kinnings made, is that the Lion of Barrika has to serve a sanction tournament, although in this sense the problem seems minor...

"It is likely that Jon will have to serve a suspension," Kinnings continued. "And if he does, he will be eligible to play in the next Ryder Cup.

"He doesn't actually have to play in a subsequent DP World Tour event to serve that suspension. He would be suspended from an event even if he's not going to participate."

Kinnings ' words seem benevolent, but nothing could be further from the truth, as the financial penalty applicable to LIV players who want to play in the Ryder Cup will be astronomical as long as an agreement is not reached before 2025.

What is the future of LIV and the PGA's relationship?

So, for Rahm, Sergio Garcia or Tyrrell Hatton , to be eligible to play in the next Ryder Cup they can enter via ranking -which is very complicated without playing Asian Tour tournaments or to remain a member of the World Tour and play at least four tournaments and request to be released for each LIV event they play.

It should be emphasized here that, as Golf Digest reports, Rahm has asked to be released for every LIV tournament he has played, but his requests have always been denied, so every tournament means a sanction for him.

This does not happen if a DPWT member player asks to play a PGA Tour tournament, as the latter are investors and commercial partners. Kinnings spoke specifically about the case of 'Rahmbo' too.

Rory mcilroy, shane lowry win 2024 zurich classic of new orleans in playoff, share this article.

european tour ryder cup standings

The cream finally rose to the top at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

In a city where celebrity chefs like the late Paul Prudhomme and Emeril Lagasse rule, past major winners and European Ryder Cup stars Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry teamed up to take the title with a par on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff on Sunday in Avondale, Louisiana.

McIlroy, No. 2 in the world, and Lowry, No. 39, needed a birdie at 18 to finish with a 72-hole total of 25-under 263 and force a playoff with Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer who finished their round two hours and 59 minutes earlier after shooting a tournament-tying 9-under 63 in the alternate-shot format employed in the final round.

McIlroy earned his 25 th career Tour title, tying Tommy Armour, Johnny Miller and Macdonald Smith for 23 rd on the all-time Tour wins list.

“To win any PGA Tour event is very cool, but to do it with one of your closest friends, we’ve known each other for a long, long time, probably like over 20 years, so to think about where we met and where we’ve come from, to be on this stage and do this together, really, really cool journey that we’ve been a part of, and yeah, just awesome to be able to do it alongside this guy,” McIlroy said.

On paper, the playoff was a mismatch of epic proportions. Ramey, 31, entered the week ranked 233 rd in the world and outside the top 125 in the FedEx Cup standings, his lone win at the opposite-field Corales Puntacana Championship in 2022.

Trainer, 33, won the 2019 Puerto Rico Open but has struggled so much in the ensuing years that he considered finding another line of work. He entered the week ranked 387 th in the world and 171 st in the FedEx Cup standings. With both in need of a partner last year, they joined forces and recorded a top-10 finish at the Tour’s lone official team event during the FedEx Cup season.

“So decided to run it back this year, and I feel like we have a good thing going,” Trainer said.

On a windswept Sunday, they combined to make 11 birdies, including at the first five holes on the back nine and take the clubhouse lead.

“We just had it going so well,” Trainer said. “I don’t want to take all the credit for the putting because Chad also putted extremely well, but it worked out so good.”

Ramey agreed that Trainer’s putter was deadly and the birdies kept piling up.

“I finally had to putt on hole 13 or 14 and I hadn’t putted since the second hole,” Ramey said. “I was just trying to give Martin some good looks.”

Then they had time for lunch and waited as Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard (69), who finished third, gave it their best shot. Hubbard credited a text from his brother on Saturday night that helped pump him up about playing in the second-to-last group with McIlroy and Lowry, telling him to treat it as his personal Ryder Cup. “This is about the closest thing certainly that I’ve had so far in my career. I definitely took that to heart and tried to be really grateful for that opportunity today to kind of feel what that might feel like, playing against an all-Euro team and that crazy format. Alternate shot is just so stressful,” Hubbard said.

Narrowly missing out on joining the playoff when Brehm’s 10-foot birdie putt from the fringe at the last burned the right edge couldn’t spoil what still amounted to a successful partnership.

“We’re still going to party tonight,” Hubbard added.

For much of the day, it looked like 54-hole leaders Zac Blair and Patrick Fishburn, who grew up playing together in Ogden, Utah, and had been teammates in junior high, high school and and college at BYU, would both be celebrating their first Tour victories. However, they made a double bogey at a par 3 on each side, the latter at the 17 th hole and it sealed their fate, a fourth-place tie (72).

McIlroy and Lowry entered the day trailing by two and their hopes for wearing the belts awarded to the champions became dicier after making bogey on two of their first three holes. But they bounced back with four birdies in a five-hole stretch starting at the seventh and played the last 12 holes in 5 under.

“It showed a lot about our characters and how much we wanted to win this thing,” Lowry said.

None of it came easily, including at 13 when McIlroy had to play from 111 yards in a sand-filled divot at 13 and chunked it. Still, they salvaged par. At 14, McIlroy drew a beauty at the par 3 that stopped 10 feet past the hole and twirled his club in satisfaction, but Lowry, who switched putters this week and admitted he never fully trusted the club, misread the putt. At 16, McIlroy drove into a fairway bunker but Lowry wedged from 133 yards to 10 feet – “pulled it a bit,” he said – and McIlroy clenched his fist when the birdie putt dropped to make it a three-way tie at the top. Just when they seem poised to put the tournament away, Lowry missed the 17 th green wide right and they failed to rescue par and dropped one stroke behind again. But McIlroy’s pitch from left of the green at the par-5 18 th  hopped and stopped 3 feet from the hole for the tying birdie and a round of 4-under 68.

The playoff, which returned to 18, lasted just one hole because Trainer duffed a chip for his team’s third shot and after making putt after putt all day, he failed to convert a 6-foot par putt to keep their dream of winning alive. Trainer looked up to the sky in dismay, knowing he had pushed the putt right of the hole.

“Golf is hard, and sometimes it doesn’t go your way,” he said.

It marked the first win of the Tour season for McIlroy, who had recorded just one top-10 finish to date at the Valero Texas Open earlier this month, and the first victory for Lowry since claiming the 2019 British Open. (The latter also became exempt for the final three Signature events.)

“We felt like coming into the week that we both could do with a big jump in the FedEx Cup, and we both said at the start of the week, let’s go and get 400 points each. That’s what we’ve done, and I nearly feel a little bit bad taking them because Rory carried me a lot of the way. But yeah, they’re mine, and they’re not going away,” Lowry said.

From playing together in junior golf to the Ryder Cup and now winners at the Zurich Classic, Lowry and McIlroy have shared a special bond.

“Anytime this man wants to partner with me, I’ll be happy to do so,” Lowry said.

“I’d say we’re going to come back and defend next year; what do you think?” McIlroy said to his partner.

“I hope so,” Lowry said. “I’ll be here.”

Ryder Cup door not closed on LIV defectors Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, says European Tour chief

Guy kinnings has taken over as chief executive of the european tour after keith pelley returned to a role in his native canada.

european tour ryder cup standings

The irony of the location wasn’t lost on anyone. In the background, the iconic Tower Bridge’s bascules rose with mechanical precision to allow high-masted yachts on the Thames to smoothly pass under to go about their business on the waterway; at a time when Guy Kinnings – the new chief executive of the European Tour – was outlining his perceived pathway forward for men’s professional golf, which has been fractured since LIV Golf’s arrival.

Kinnings has been in the sport for a long, long time. Back in the day, in a previous career life with IMG, he was Colin Montgomerie’s manager and, since joining the European Tour (now DP World Tour), he oversaw last year’s Ryder Cup in Rome before earlier this month moving into the top role vacated by Keith Pelley, who moved back to his native Canada as CEO of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Given his own legal background, Kinnings’s move into the hot seat could prove prudent. “There is one single topic that needs to get sorted first and the rest of the stuff will flow from there . . . we [need to] get the solution on what the future of the game will look like, it is the elephant in the room in every conversation you have. So, from my perspective all I want to do is, as quickly as possible, get the right people around the table to talk about what can the future look like.

“I don’t expect them to go in knowing all the answers. What does the product look like in 2026 and beyond? What is the pathway? Until you get into a room with the right people with the right intent to try and find a solution you are never going to work out a deal and this is what is needed right now,” said Kinnings.

The remarkable thing is that such a meeting has not yet taken place, that the PGA Tour, the Sports Strategic Group (a consortium of American sports team owners led by Fenway Sports Group), the Saudi Arabia PIF and the DP World Tour have not, as one, sat down as one to find solutions.

european tour ryder cup standings

“I see it as a huge opportunity because if you can unite and go global, that’s exactly what we are all about . . . [it’s about] finding a pathway, bring the players back, make it global, make it united, so that’s got to be the mantra we all want to get and how you then work it,” admitted Kinnings, who nevertheless isn’t inclined to look back:

“I can’t explain in detail or fix what’s gone before, now looking forward, we have just got to make sure that happens as soon as possible.”

And Kinnings is convinced Rory McIlroy’s recent decision to rejoining the PGA Tour’s policy board will be of benefit, especially in having the back of the European side of things: “For us to have a European voice in itself, but also someone so articulate, who has that knowledge, is a really good thing. I know how much time it took out of him originally, because we had a conversation when he first stood down. This is a guy who would work board meetings until two or three in the morning, get up and play in a pro-am and he did that and he knows that.

“I think his voice will be really, really important. It is having the right voices that will make sure we get all the people to the negotiating table. The only thing I see as the biggest obstacle is getting that negotiation to happen. We know who they are, who they need to be, we want to just get that started. I can’t control that process. All I can do is encourage people to do that as I am sure Rory and others will do.”

And Kinnings also envisaged a situation where someone like Jon Rahm or Tyrrell Hatton – among those defectors to LIV – could still play for Europe in the Ryder Cup at Bethpage next year, without any need to change qualification rules.

“If you look at what was the qualification eligibility criteria for 2023, then I think there has been a slight misconception because the reality is, under the current rules, if a player is European and is a member of the DP World Tour and abides by the rules as they currently are [can qualify]. If you don’t get a release there are sanctions and if you accept those sanctions and take those penalties and work with that, there is no reason why players who have taken LIV membership, maintained membership of the DP World Tour, could not (A) qualify and (B) be available for selection,” said Kinnings, insisting such an interpretation was not a “loophole.”

LIV rebels Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton handed shock lifeline to play in Ryder Cup

LIV rebels Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton have been handed a shock lifeline to play in the Ryder Cup as the DP World Tour denied claims of a loophole allowing them to compete.   When the duo jumped ship before the start of LIV’s campaign it was feared the defections would exclude them from the match in New York. Indeed, Rory McIlroy’s immediate reaction to Rahm’s £400 million departure was to demand the DP World Tour rip up the rules to ensure the Spaniard could represent Europe at Bethpage. But contrary to widespread opinion, regulations will not need to be rewritten for the LIV Golf pair to be eligible for Luke Donald’s team in 2025. Guy Kinnings, the recently appointed DP World Tour chief executive, eased concerns after Rahm and Hatton conceded they had put their Ryder Cup futures in jeopardy , revealing they simply need to pay the outstanding fines and play their four minimum events to remain members.

It raises the prospect of Rahm and Hatton teeing it up at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in November and leaving the way clear for other European Ryder Cup stars to join LIV, knowing they can still appear in the biennial match and play in at least some DP World Tour events where they could earn world ranking points.

“I think there’s been a slight misconception because the reality is, under the current rules, if a player is European, and is a member of the DP World Tour, and abides by the rules as they currently are – so if you don’t get a release and you accept the sanctions – there is no reason why players who have taken LIV membership and maintained DP World Tour membership, could not a) qualify and/or b) be available for [wildcard] selection,” Kinnings said.

Kinnings, a former lawyer, is aware that many will be surprised by this news – not least, perhaps, “strategic alliance” partner the PGA Tour, which has issued effective lifetime bans for all the LIV rebels.

Rahm and Hatton – and others such as Adrian Meronk and Thomas Pieters – have been picking up fines and one-week suspensions each time they play in a LIV event. It was assumed they would have to serve what would presumably be a 14-week ban after the LIV season ends, making it practically impossible to fulfil membership obligations and play in the minimum quota.

Yet after consulting his rules department, Kinnings discovered they could serve these bans in the LIV rest weeks throughout the calendar, even though they would have had no intention of playing in those events.

So, they will serve suspensions at next month’s Soudal Open in Belgium and European Open in Germany , despite the chances of Rahm and Hatton wanting to play in these tournaments being negligible to the point of non-existence. When the LIV season finishes in September, Rahm will be able to play in the Andalucia Masters, the French Open and, if he qualifies, the two play-offs – in Abu Dhabi and Dubai – that wrap up the campaign. The Olympics also counts as a tournament under Tour rules, so Rahm can easily satisfy his commitments. The fines will tot up to more than £1 million, but due to his huge LIV deal that is hardly an obstacle. In fact, there is even scope for Rahm and Hatton to play on Tour during the LIV season, a fact that will surely make other players sit up and take notice. Certainly, Ian Poulter, Sergio García, Lee Westwood and Henrik Stenson will be interested, if not aggrieved.

The quartet resigned their Tour memberships last year in the wake of an arbitration hearing in London which sided with the Tour in its fight to have the right to issue sanctions. Telegraph Sport understands at least one of the four handed in his cards in the belief it would be unfeasible to retain his membership. However, it was spelt out in the letters they received when notified of their punishments for playing in LIV events without the necessary permissions from Wentworth HQ.

Kinnings added the caveat that the qualification rules for 2025 could be altered, although also conceded this would be highly unlikely.

He claimed that “this is actually not ‘new’ news” but also acknowledged he had himself been unsure about when the bans would have to be served. “It’s not a loophole, because that’s the rules that we’ve always had,” Kinnings said when challenged. “And those are the rules we’re just going to continue to apply. They’ve been tested. I’ve got the guys who analyse this in detail, they’ve looked at it and said, ‘it’s up to him and his team’. We’ve spoken to them and they want to do it the right way.”

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry were elated after the 2024 Zurich Classic win

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry have been friends for more than two decades but decided to pair for the 2024 Zurich Classic over a drunken lunch after the 2023 Ryder Cup.

It was McIlroy's 25th Tour title and his third in a debut at a tournament, while it was Lowry's third Tour win overall. After winning the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Lowry said (via PGA Tour ):

"We went out there, we had loads of fun, and we won the tournament. You couldn't ask for a better week."

McIlroy was grateful for his friendship with Lowry and said (via PGA Tour):

"To win any PGA TOUR event is very cool, but to do it with one of your closest friends … Think about where we met and where we've come from, to be on this stage and do this together – just awesome to be able to do it alongside this guy."

This wasn't the first time the Irish golfers paired up. They paired up for the first time at the 2007 European Amateur Team Championship representing Ireland. Before the Zurich Classic, they paired up in the 2021 Olympics. McIlroy said (via PGA Tour):

"I was in a seven-way playoff in Tokyo for a bronze medal, and I've never tried so hard to finish third in my life."

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry have also been teammates while playing in the European Ryder Cup.

Five Things to Know: Volvo China Open

The Volvo China Open makes its long-anticipated return to the DP World Tour schedule this week as the Asian Swing reaches a climax at Hidden Grace Golf Club in Shenzhen. Here are your five things to know.

Asian Swing reaches a climax

Heading into the final stop of the Swing, Sebastian Söderberg leads the way following his second runner-up finish in as many events in Japan, with Hero Indian Open winner Keita Nakajima second and Porsche Singapore Classic champion Jesper Svensson third.

With Nakajima not in the field in China, and 500 Race to Dubai ranking points on offer for the winner, there is opportunity for those behind to make up ground with anyone down to 20th in the standings still able to win the Asian Swing.

As with the four other Global Swings, the Asian Swing will have its own champion who will earn $200,000 from an overall $1million bonus pool and qualify for each of the Back 9 events, where players will play for increased Race to Dubai ranking points.

The leading DP World Tour member (not otherwise exempt) will also qualify for the Genesis Scottish Open , the second of five Rolex Series events this season.

In another exciting reward for DP World Tour members, the players who finish one to three in the swing standings will be exempt into the U.S. PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club from May 16-19.

DP World Tour returns to China

For the first time since 2019, the Volvo China Open is returning to the DP World Tour schedule.

First staged in 1995, and then first sanctioned by the DP World Tour in 2004, it is the longest-running international professional golf tournament in the Chinese mainland and is this year celebrating its 29th edition.

Hosted by the China Golf Association, the event is co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and the China Tour.

With the total prize fund increased from US$1.5 million in 2023 to $2.25 million in 2024, along with both Race to Dubai ranking points and Olympic qualification points on offer, incentives to perform well are not in short supply.

Inside the field

The 156-player field showcases a strong mix of DP World Tour professionals alongside promising young Chinese players.

Two-time winner Alexander Levy returns to the scene of his maiden DP World Tour title in 2014 aiming to build on his form which has seen him make an excellent start to the European Challenge Tour’s Road to Mallorca Rankings.

Home favourites Li Haotong and Wu Ashun will hope to impress the local fans, with fellow past champion Nicolas Colsaerts also in action in China.

A host of winners on this season’s Race to Dubai are also teeing it up, including European Challenge Tour graduates Jesper Svensson and Matteo Manassero, while England's Jordan Smith has fond memories of previous visits to China with top-five finishes in 2018 and 2019.

Tom McKibbin, who has six top 20s so far this season, and fellow DP World Tour winner Yannik Paul are among those set for their debut in this event.

Thailand’s Sarit Suwannarut is the defending champion after a six-stroke victory in November.

Behind the venue

Located in Shenzhen, Hidden Grace has been a member of European Tour Destinations since 2019.

Formerly Genzon Golf Club, Hidden Grace Golf Club is hosting the Volvo China Open for the sixth time since its first in 2014.

Designed by renowned golf course architect Neil Haworth, the championship layouts wrap around the resort’s ecological, 1000-acre Dragon Lake, between rolling hills and dense forests.

The well-known member's only venue also previously staged the Shenzhen International, played from 2015 to 2017 on the DP World Tour.

Sustainability at the heart

To support the European Tour group's 'Green Drive' initiative - first launched in June 2021 - the Volvo China Open will implement a number of activities to emphasise sustainability throughout the event.

With eco friendly transportation a cornerstone of sustainability efforts at the event, carbon emissions will be reduced through the use of Volvo's first ever fully electric premium MPV.

In other commitments to sustainability, only eco-friendly cups will be available to spectators while there will be an increased number of water stations at the venue.

In a bid to make the tournament open and accessible to all, local school programmes will be run while there will be collaborations with the Shenzhen Metro Volunteer Federation.
