While the Natural History Museum has numerous galleries and an extensive permanent collection that covers a range of topics, it is best known for its collection of dinosaurs. The California Science Center , open to the public free of charge, is home to the Space Shuttle Endeavour , as well as other major exhibits. Mission 26: The Big Endeavour is currently on display at the Samuel Oschin Pavilion, while the new Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center is being built.

You can see the space shuttle, as well as artifacts from the space mission, and learn all about it and the people involved in the program.

Other exhibits at the Science Center cover such topics as the living world, technology, and ecosystems. The museum was founded by Eli and Edythe Broad, who have been long-time collectors of postwar and contemporary art.

The Los Angeles Farmers Market first started in 1934 as a very modest affair that sprung from the hardships created by the Great Depression. At the height of the economic depression, eighteen farmers came together and set up stalls on a piece of open land near Wilshire Boulevard in order to sell their produce direct to the consumer.

This experiment was so successful that the market continued to expand. At that time, it truly was a fruit and vegetable market, but over the years the market has grown to accommodate more and more vendors. Today, the market hosts vegetable and other food stands, as well as restaurants and specialty shops. You can find everything from jewelry and candles to kitchenware and toys.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art lays claim to being the largest art museum in the western United States , with almost 130,000 pieces spanning from antiquity through to modern times. Of particular note are the outstanding collections of Asian, Latin American, and Islamic Art.

The huge complex consists of a number of separate buildings that have been acquired and renovated over the years. The most recent expansion, known as the Transformation, saw the opening of several new buildings on the western half of the campus, designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop. Venice Beach deserves its reputation as a place to see and be seen, making it perfect for people-watching, although the area definitely has its own unique vibe. This stretch of golden sand and the Venice Beach Boardwalk are always thronged with people walking, cycling, rollerblading, and jogging.

Eclectic shops and street performers of all kinds line the walkway. The Skatepark , also just off the beach, is frequented by some of the area's best skateboarders, and nearby are a number of creative art installations. At the appropriately named Muscle Beach , gym members pump iron in the hot California sun.

Food stalls selling everything from shaved ice to kettle corn and funnel cakes make you feel like you're walking through fairgrounds. You can also find some good restaurants here. This is not a typical family beach, but it's well worth a visit.

Highlights: Chic Golden Triangle of fashion, several public parks, nearby mansions

Beverly Hills borders Los Angeles to the west, encompassing 5.7 square miles tucked beneath the Santa Monica Mountains. And within this small footprint are some of the poshest streets in America, including the world-famous Rodeo Drive .

Rodeo Drive, Santa Monica Boulevard, and Wilshire Boulevard converge in Beverly Hills to create the city's " Golden Triangle " of upscale retail and dining. This luxe thoroughfare is worth the visit even without shopping, as the glamour spills out onto the sidewalks with celebrity sightings and luxury cars.

And there are a lot more things to do in Beverly Hills besides shopping and dining. The city is very walkable with several gardens, historic buildings, and public art throughout. Spend some time at Beverly Gardens Park for a sample of these first-class public spaces.

Highlights: Indoor and outdoor exhibits detailing the incredible natural history of the area

In Hancock Park, La Brea Tar Pits offers a unique opportunity to see live excavations of fossils and learn about the process. The Tar Pits were formed 40,000 years ago, when oil seeped through the rock, entrapping passing animals, which would get stuck in the substance. The tar then preserved the fossils throughout the ages, leaving behind an incredible glimpse into another age.

The museum at la Brea Tar Pits (formerly the George C. Page Museum) shows reconstructed fossils of prehistoric animals found at the site, as well as the process of fossil recovery. You can see bones being worked on and learn what takes place behind the scenes, before skeletons are able to be displayed.

The museum displays fully reconstructed fossils of a variety of mammals including mammoths, saber-toothed cats, dire wolves, and others, all dating from between 40,000 and 10,000 years ago. An outdoor area displays replicas of extinct animals.

Plans are in the works for a renovation and new design. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is reviewing plans from architecture teams in the hopes of reinventing this unique attraction.

Highlights: Guided tours of a retired battleship

The Battleship Iowa Museum is an imposing sight on the waterfront close to the Port of Los Angeles and is a great family activity. You can wander throughout this massive battleship and see what life at sea would have been like for the sailors on board.

Included with admission is a self-guided tour showcasing the history of the ship. One of the highlights is a look at the massive 16-inch guns. Kids enjoy a free scavenger hunt, searching the ship to find the 10 secret locations of Vicky, the ship's dog (displayed on posters or in augmented reality).

For those wanting to really get behind the scenes, for an additional fee you can take the Full Steam Ahead Guided Tour , which allows you access to the inner workings of the ship, including the engine room, boiler room, and the Combat Engagement Center, among other restricted areas. Note that dates and numbers are limited for this tour, and it should be booked well in advance.

Highlights: Beloved hiking area with great views and celebrity sightings

Runyon Canyon Park is a 160-acre park known for its hiking trails and magnificent views of Downtown Los Angeles . Its convenient location near Hollywood and the Hollywood Hills makes it a popular place with celebrities —if you've seen paparazzi photos of celebs hiking in Los Angeles, they were probably taken at Runyon.

Trails run from 1 to just over 3 miles and range from easy to strenuous. For some of the best views, hit the East Trail from the Fuller Avenue entrance. It passes through two beautiful lookouts: Inspiration Point and Cloud's Rest.

Parking can be particularly tricky on the streets near Runyon Canyon Park, so be sure you leave ample time to look for a spot, or consider using a ride-share service.

Highlights: Japanese restaurants, historic fire tower, wishing tree, gardens

Los Angeles is home to one of just three remaining Japantowns in the United States: Little Tokyo. The petite neighborhood packs tons of culture, cuisine, and color into about five city blocks.

The Japanese Village Plaza is considered the central gathering place. Lit by red and white paper lanterns, this pedestrian-only plaza feels like it was plucked from Tokyo and dropped into Downtown Los Angeles. Check out the Yagura Tower at the First Street entrance—this replica of a rural Japanese fire tower has been greeting visitors for nearly 50 years.

In addition to popular shops, like Nijiya grocery store and the Sanrio Hello Kitty boutique , another major attraction is the wishing tree . People from around the world jot down their hopes and dreams on colorful paper strips, then hang them from the tree's branches in hopes that they'll come to fruition. Reading the notes is deeply touching.

Come hungry—Little Tokyo has some of the best Japanese restaurants in Los Angeles. Slurp ramen noodles at Hachioji , fill up on okonomiyaki (a Hiroshima speciality!) at Chinchikurin , and satisfy your sweet tooth with fresh mochi from the 120-year-old Fugetsu-Do Bakery Shop .

Melrose Avenue is one of the city's most famous streets due to its large number of vintage shops with funky storefronts. On the two-mile span from La Cienega Boulevard to La Brea Avenue, you can shop at more than 15 vintage stores , some of which have been adding vibrancy to this street for decades.

The west side of Melrose tends to have higher-end shops, like Decades , which is beloved for its dazzling designer gowns from as far back as the 1930s . Head east and you'll get a lot more bang for your buck at mega vintage shops like Wasteland , American Rebel, and American Vintage. Browsing the racks at these stores feels like digging for wearable treasure, and no matter what your style or budget, you'll likely find a unique piece to upgrade your wardrobe.

Once you find something you love, wear it right out of the store for an impromptu photoshoot at one of the many murals on Melrose. The famous pink wall on the Paul Smith flagship store is popular among the influencer crowd.

There are a few to choose from and we’ve broken down the specifics of each Los Angeles tourist pass here to help you compare and choose what will fit your needs the best. 

All-Inclusive

If you’re planning on seeing a lot of different things in Los Angeles, this might be the most convenient option.

An all-inclusive tourist pass provides access to several different activities for one flat low price.

Rather than paying for individual tickets or for a specific number of attractions, you will pay for access to everything the Los Angeles all-inclusive pass includes for 1, 2, 3, 5, or 7 days at a time.

Visitors who would rather pick and choose the activities they pay for should consider this type of Los Angeles tourist pass instead.

Rather than paying per day of use, you’ll pay one flat price for either 3, 4, 5, or 6 of the top Los Angeles attractions.

This option is valid for over 30 days.

Like the all-inclusive pass, a combination package will include several different attractions for one flat price.

The main difference between the two services is that a combo deal usually includes far fewer activities and they are usually some of the most popular options like studio tours and theme parks.

You can also expect most of these deals to be valid for at least one month.

There is only one all-inclusive tourist attraction discount option in LA, and it is the Go Los Angeles Pass.

Go City Los Angeles Pass

The Go City Los Angeles Pass is offered via an app that you can download for free.

All you have to do is pull up the app and show the QR code wherever you go!

Additionally, if your trip gets canceled or your plans change, the pass is offered with a risk-free guarantee  that gives you up to 30 days from the purchase date to return any non-activated pass for a full refund!

The pass can be activated on any mobile device with the Go City app for easy access.

You simply show your digital pass at any Los Angeles attraction that’s on your pass and you’re in! Simple as that.

All-Inclusive Pass: Go C i t y Los Angeles Pass

This pass saves you up to 50% on top LA attractions.

You can choose from 33 attractions including museums, cruises, tours, and more, and take your time exploring 1, 2, 3, 5, or 7 calendar days over a two-week period from 9:00 am - 5:30 pm.

Each pass for 3 days or more includes a one-day general admission ticket to Universal Studios Hollywood.

Things to Consider:

If this is the pass for you and you really plan on getting the most value possible, you’ll really want to plan out your daily itinerary.

Los Angeles is exceptionally spread out so you’ll need to make sure you calculate estimated travel times to/from each attraction and incorporate time for eating and potential shopping.

There’s a chance that you might not get to all of the attractions that you set out to do so try your best to be realistic to see if you will really get the value out of this pass.

Do I have to use my Go City All-Inclusive Los Angeles Pass on consecutive days?

Yes. Once you activate the pass, it will only be active for the time alotted. If you activate a 3-day pass on a Monday, the last day it will be active is on Wednesday.

SET THE NUMBER OF ATTRACTIONS PASS

Much like the all-inclusive option, there is only one pass in LA that allows you to pick a set number of attractions and it is the Los Angeles Sightseeing Pass.

Los Angeles Sightseeing Pass

Rather than paying for a specific number of days, this pass will allow you to pay one flat price for either 3, 4, 5, or 6 different activities.

While an all-inclusive pass will require you to pay for dozens of attractions upfront, you can be much more selective with this service.

The best thing about this pass is that you can pick attractions at your leisure.

There’s no need to choose activities ahead of time, so you can just wander around Los Angeles and use it at various locations whenever you need it.

Another benefit is that you will have a full year to activate the pass and you can get a full refund for up to 30 days after your purchase if your plans change.

Additionally, you will have a full 30 days to use your pass at your leisure.

That said, it’s worth noting that some activities will require advance reservations, so you may want to plan out at least a few of them ahead of time.

Things to Consider

As you can probably tell, most of the activities included are either Hollywood tours or transportation to and from the bigger theme parks in the area.

That being said, many of those transportation services can cost between $45-$55 per ticket, so this could be a great way to save money in combination with the SoCal Theme Park pass or the CityPASS we mention in some of the sections below.

If you’re more interested in visiting a variety of attractions such as Madame Tussauds, TCL Chinese Theatre, or the Grammy Museum, you may want to consider another pass.

However, visitors who want to see the sites and explore Hollywood will definitely have an opportunity to save a lot of money with this service.

Go City Los Angeles Explorer Pass

This is an alternative service offered by the Go City Los Angeles Pass which works the same way as a set number of attractions pass.

Unlike their other options, the Explorer Pass allows you to pay one flat price for a specific amount of activities (3, 4, 5, or 7 attractions).

Depending on which attractions you choose, you could save up to 60% off general admission prices. The more activities you pick, the less you'll pay for each!

As with their competitors, you can use this pass at your leisure over the course of 30 days and you don't have to choose your activities ahead of time.

Any pass that hasn't been activated within 30 days of purchase can be returned for a full refund.

Some attractions may require advance booking, but in most cases, you'll only need to present your Explorer Pass at the ticket booth to get inside.

As you can see, no matter how many attractions you choose, you'll be paying about $20-$25 (for adults) per activity.

This means that if you want the best deal, you'll have to pick activities that are usually more expensive.

Thankfully, the Go City Los Angeles Explorer Pass includes several attractions that are between $30-$50 on average, so it's easy to save a lot of money.

COMBO PACKAGES

Rather than paying one price for dozens of different activities, these combo packages and passes focus primarily on a certain set of attractions.

This section will include details about prices, services, and any additional information you should think about before purchasing a package. 

Go City Los Angeles Pass Package

This deal is not currently being offered, but they may bring it back in the future.

Packaged deals on the Go City Los Angeles Pass offer a variety of set attractions (think of a pre-set menu) at discounted prices.

With this type of pass, you can save up to 40% off gate prices and the pass is valid for 30 days after you visit the first attraction. There are seven package deals to choose from that fit well with every type of traveler:

Top 4 Los Angeles Attractions (Not Available at the moment)

The package deals offered with the Go City Los Angeles Pass are of very good value if you plan to visit the attractions within the package anyway, but the package deals aren’t as flexible as some of the other offerings by Go City could be.

Other Los Angeles Tourist Passes

CityPASS for Southern California (Disneyland!)

If you're looking for the Los Angeles CityPASS, this is it. Technically there is no "City Pass Los Angeles," as the actual name is the Southern California CityPASS.

This service allows you to create your own theme park vacation by choosing only the attractions you want to visit. It’s like an a la carte menu. You can buy as many or as few attractions as you want. 

This pass can save you money because the prices for individual attractions are less than if you were to buy tickets at each attraction at the ticket gate.

Here are the attractions you can purchase:

• Disneyland® Park and Disney California Adventure® Park (choice of 2, 3, 4 or 5-day ticket)
• Universal Studios Hollywood™ (choice of 1 or 2-day ticket)
• LEGOLAND® California Resort (choice of 1 or 2-day ticket)
• SeaWorld® San Diego
• San Diego Zoo® OR Safari Park

Prices will vary greatly depending on which attractions you decide to purchase and the number of days you choose to buy. 

The savings aren't enormous, but if the attractions you can choose from are all on your list, hey, why not save some money? It can't hurt! 

Film Fanatic Pass

If you're visiting Los Angeles exclusively to see Hollywood's most noteworthy and historic landmarks, this pass includes admission to 3 popular attractions related to the world of film.

• Warner Bros Studio Tour Hollywood
• Academy Museum of Motion Pictures

The Universal Studios Hollywood ticket also includes admission to their tour, so you can actually enjoy two studio tours with this pass!

In addition to those activities, the Academy Museum houses some of the most noteworthy memorabilia in film history, including both R2-D2 and C-3PO, as well as the ruby red slippers from The Wizard of Oz .

Purchase the Film Fanatic Pass .

While the discount you'll receive with this deal isn't amazing, you can expect to save anywhere from 5% - 15% off depending on factors such as the time of year and the discretion of the service provider (Tiqets).

This isn't the best way to save money on these attractions, but it's an interesting alternative to services such as the Southern California CityPASS.

Starline Attraction Pass (Not Available at the moment)

This pass is currently unavailable, but we will let you know when its availability changes.

For those who really want to focus on seeing all that Hollywood has to offer, the Starline Attraction Pass is a good value.

The pass is valid for 1, 2, or 3 days and you have the ability to make reservations to guarantee a spot on the tours that are included in the pass.

In addition to a hop-on-hop-off bus tour for the amount of time you select, you'll also receive admission to 14 popular attractions in Hollywood.

Finally, to sweeten the deal, they also offer admission to either Universal Studios or Warner Bros. Studios when you purchase a 3-day pass.

As with an All-inclusive pass, the amount you save will depend on the number of activities you choose to enjoy while you have the pass.

Most people will be able to save at least 30% - 50% off general admission prices with the Starline Attraction Pass.

Due to the fact that it includes either a ticket to Universal Studios or a Warner Bros. Studio Tour, the 3-day pass is much more expensive than every other option.

That being said, if you're interested in either of those activities, this is a great way to save money on admission, as tickets typically go for between $80-$120.

If you aren't interested in either Universal Studios or the Warner Bros. Studio Tour, the 2-day pass will be a much better deal at just $66 per day.

The 2 day Starline hop-on-hop-off bus tour is $64 alone, so it's just a couple of bucks more per day to get this pass!

Ultimately, this pass is a great option if you're interested in a bus tour and a few extra attractions, as it doesn't require you to get carried away with several activities in order to save some money.

Los Angeles CityPASS vs Go City Pass

A lot of travelers are curious about how these two discount passes compare to one another, and we'll cover that, but first we need to clear something up:

The first service is actually called the Southern California CityPASS. There is no official Los Angeles tourist pass offered by this company, as they have chosen to focus more on amusement parks than other attractions and activities.

Some of these amusement parks are located outside of LA, so it wouldn't be appropriate to name the service after the City of Angels.

With that out of the way, let's explain the differences between these two discount passes.

All-Inclusive vs Prepackaged Pass

The Los Angeles Go City Pass is an all-inclusive service, which means you pay for unlimited access to dozens of attractions over the course of 1 to 7 days.

On the other hand, the Southern California CityPASS is a prepackaged option that allows you to save money on a few specific popular attractions.

How much can you save with each pass?

The Southern California CityPASS will typically allow you to save anywhere from 5% - 20% off, but it covers the cost of popular attractions that aren't included with other passes.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Go City All-Inclusive Pass could save you anywhere from 30% - 50% off depending on how you use it. The more activities you enjoy with this pass, the bigger your discount will be.

Which pass is better?

The answer to that question is of course up to interpretation. However, we can tell you some of the activities that are only included with one pass or the other.

Both passes include admission to LEGOLAND, Universal Studios Hollywood, and the San Diego Zoo.

• Three of the CityPASS attractions are not in the Los Angeles area.
• Most of the Los Angeles Go City All-Inclusive Pass attractions are located in LA.

In the end, the Southern California CityPASS only has a limited use, while the Los Angeles Go City All-Inclusive Pass covers dozens of activities.

Because of this difference, chances are you'll get far more out of the Go City Los Angeles Pass, but the allure of a cheaper Disneyland ticket might be enough to sway some travelers!

Getting around

Having a car is ideal, even if it means navigating the area’s famously clogged roadways. But if you don’t want to spring for a rental (or don’t drive), L.A. has a widespread light-rail system that is accessible for wheelchair users and connects with myriad buses. Between that and judicious use of ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft, you’ll be able to reach many key spots without breaking your budget.

If you like to walk, strolling through L.A.’s neighborhoods is a fantastic way to get a taste of different parts of the city. Manhattan Beach offers one of my favorite shoreline walks, but lots of first-time visitors seek out the wilder scene at Venice Beach, with its drum circles, fortune-tellers and many flavors of California eccentricity. When you’ve had enough, head north; once the roller skates are replaced by baby carriages, you’re in the more serene Santa Monica.

And don’t forget L.A.’s world-class museums.

The original  Getty Villa  (17985 Pacific Coast Highway), featuring the art collection of oil-industry magnate J. Paul Getty, shows off classical Greek and Roman antiquities in a re-created Roman country home, with a garden and reflecting pool. About 14 miles away, off the 405 Freeway, the main  Getty Center  complex houses the museum’s European and American art collections, but the stunning architecture, grounds and 360-degree views are reason enough to visit.  Both museums are free, although you still need to reserve timed-entry tickets online — and parking is $20.

In the Mid-Wilshire neighborhood called Museum Row, near Beverly Hills, the impressive  Los Angeles Country Museum of Art  (LACMA) is the largest art museum in the western U.S., showcasing more than 147,000 works from around the world. Check out its famous sculpture installation  Urban Light , composed of 202 vintage streetlamps.  Timed-entry tickets are released online on the last Thursday of the month: $25 for adults; $16 for adults 65 and up.

Around the corner, the 100,000-square-foot  Petersen Automotive Museum  (6060 Wilshire Blvd.) provides an apt tribute to L.A.’s car culture, and earned me high marks when I took my visiting nephew.  Buy timed-entry tickets online: $17 for adults 61 and younger, $15 for those 62 and up.

Nearby, the  La Brea Tar Pits  (5801 Wilshire Blvd.) are a living reminder of California’s prehistoric origins, complete with actual tar bubbling from the ground — so don’t wear your best shoes. The outdoor spaces are free, but it’s worth paying the $15 admission ($12 for adults 62 and up) to see fossils of saber-toothed cats and mammoths from Ice Age L.A.  Buy timed-entry tickets online.

New to the neighborhood is the  Academy Museum of Motion Pictures  (6067 Wilshire Blvd.), a shrine to the art form housed in an old landmark building totally revamped by famed Italian architect Renzo Piano. You can see one of the five pairs of ruby slippers Judy Garland wore in  The Wizard of Oz , the tablets from  The Ten Commandments  and more.  Buy timed-entry tickets online: $25 for adults 61 and younger, $19 for those 62 and up.

At some point during your trip, of course, you’ll also want to cruise Hollywood Boulevard to see the Walk of Fame stars and the historic TCL (formerly Grauman’s) Chinese Theatre.   

Three or four miles to the south of Museum Row, near my own home base of Culver City, lies the uniquely bizarre  Museum of Jurassic Technology , where trying to guess which exhibits are utterly invented or merely odd is part of the fun. While you’re there, it’s worth climbing a few extra stairs to get a cup of complimentary tea from the large samovar in the Tula Tea Room. Enjoy it in the rooftop garden, which is easy to miss if you don’t know to look for it.  Buy timed-entry tickets online: $12 for adults 61 and younger, $10 for those 62 and up. Open Thursday through Sunday.

There’s plenty more here, if you like gardens. Check out the gorgeous 120-acre  Huntington Botanical Gardens  in San Marino, which boasts 15,000 species, from delicate bonsai to gigantic eucalyptus. It’s pricey, but admission is free the first Thursday of the month, if you can get a ticket.  Buy timed-entry tickets online: On weekends it’s $29 for adults 64 and younger, $24 for adults 65 and up; tickets are a few dollars less on weekdays.

Other budget fun

Enjoy the Bard.  In the summer, you can catch Shakespeare performed at Will Geer’s  Theatricum Botanicum  (1419 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd.).  General seating: $26 for adults; $15 for those 62 and older.

Visit the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena.  If your trip is timed right, you can catch this awesome  flea market , held the second Sunday of each month. Its 2,500 vendors sell crafts, vintage clothing, antiques and pretty much anything else you can imagine.  Cash-only admission: $10 to $20.

Explore the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.   Stroll past the graves of legends like Judy Garland, Cecil B. DeMille, Rudolph Valentino, Marion Davies and Tyrone Power.

Watch a TV show taping.  Catch some of your favorite celebs live by joining a studio audience for programs such as  The Ellen DeGeneres Show  at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank (see calendar  online ). It’s free, but bear in mind that some shows book up months in advance. Others, including  Wheel of Fortune , aren’t taping in front of a live audience due to the pandemic.

See SoFi.  If the Super Bowl inspired you, tours of  SoFi Stadium  start at $30.

Where to stay

Airbnb rentals are available for less than $100 a night, though it may be worth paying more to stay near a Metro station. I’m biased, but I think Culver City, where I live, is a wonderful home base for visitors, as are Silver Lake and Larchmont Village (both closer to Hollywood).

Or, with a little effort, you can find nice, moderately priced hotels, such as Mayumi (5630 Sawtelle Blvd.), a boutique property on the edge of Culver City. Rates start at around $200 but vary during the year. There’s also the BLVD Hotel & Suites (2010 N. Highland Ave.) in Hollywood, where I found a mid-March rate of $179. The Hoxton Downtown LA, (1060 S. Broadway) has a rooftop pool and small but stylish rooms that start at about $200.

Where to eat

L.A.’s dining options are vast — and include plenty of trendy places that charge jaw-dropping prices for their elaborate dishes. You could actually spend your entire vacation budget on a single meal at the trippy Vespertine, a concept restaurant where dinner is “an immersive, multi-sensory event.” Fortunately, the metro area is also home to hundreds of affordable family-run eateries.

A few of my favorites:

Madre! (10426 National Blvd., plus other locations). OK, this one’s not exactly a budget option if you order its main dishes, but if you choose carefully, you can get away with $25 for a fantastic dinner. Try the carnitas or carne asada tacos with handmade corn tortillas (about $7 each), for instance, or a tamal de mole (banana-leaf-wrapped tamal with chicken and mole negro, for $12). The bar menu is even more affordable, and you can pair your food with a mezcal cocktail.

Jitlada (5233½ W. Sunset Blvd.). The family behind this Hollywood hot spot hails from southern Thailand, the inspiration for the delicious curries, spicy tom yum ($14) and literally hundreds of other unique dishes (think fresh New Zealand mussels in lemongrass broth and deep-fried shrimp with crispy tea leaves) on offer.

Saffron & Rose (1387 Westwood Blvd.). Don’t even consider ordering vanilla at this Persian ice cream shop, whose Middle Eastern flavors include saffron pistachio, orange blossom, lavender and jasmine.

If you have a kitchen and want to eat in or do your own cooking, there are loads of farmers’ markets that show off the bounty of SoCal’s extra-long growing season.  The Original Farmers Market  (6333 W. 3rd St.), near the CBS studio, is open daily and boasts tantalizing selections from both prepared-food and produce vendors. The same is true of downtown’s  Grand Central Market  (317 S. Broadway), where my favorite purveyor of local flavor, Valeria’s, will let you taste from its wide selection of dried chiles.

Letters to the Editor: Charge an extra fee? Restaurants should have to tell customers before they enter

To the editor: Regarding the new state law requiring restaurants to disclose all fees such as service and security charges or incorporate them into their prices, how about informing customers of all charges before they enter a restaurant? (“ Perch charges diners ‘security’ fee at downtown L.A. rooftop spot, sparking outrage ,” April 9)

If a restaurant is going to inform the customer of any charges in addition to that of the meal prices, why wait until the customer is already seated?

I think I know why. How many of us would leave the restaurant after having waited to be seated and placed a drink order, because we saw the fee disclosures after the menu arrived? I suspect none.

Would it not be better for the establishment to post a menu outside with the price of the meals and a highly visible notice of any additional fees devoted to security or whatever? Informing the customer before entering would be best for the customer — so I guess that’s why it is not done.

To the editor: An eating establishment that sticks its patrons with a 4.5% “security” fee will not get my business. Why eat a meal at a place that needs so much security?

I have a simple solution for added fees: Just subtract them from the tip.
