VMAs 2024 live updates: Taylor Swift wins, Katy Perry honored, Megan Thee Stallion hosts and more

Everything to know about the 2024 vmas:.

  • Megan Thee Stallion hosted the MTV Video Music Awards show at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.
  • Taylor Swift came into the show with 12 nominations, the most of any artist. Post Malone followed with nine nominations, while Ariana Grande, Eminem and Sabrina Carpenter each had six.
  • Katy Perry received MTV’s Video Vanguard Award and performed a career-spanning medley live. Other performers this year included Carpenter , Camila Cabello, Chappell Roan , GloRilla and Rauw Alejandro.
  • The VMAs have a history of memorable and provocative red carpet looks. See this year's stand-out outfits.

The 40th MTV Video Music Awards were chock-full of performances and peppered with memories of the award show’s storied four-decade history.

Taylor Swift took home the biggest award of the night — video of the year — in addition to six others, tying her with Beyoncé for the most VMA wins ever. After tonight, Swift and Beyoncé have 30 Moon People each to their names.

Chappell Roan took home the first major award of her career for best new artist, beating out Gracie Abrams and Tyla after a show-stopping summer on the festival circuit.

Iconic moments from VMAs past also got their place to shine. Notably, host Megan Thee Stallion took the stage with a live snake roped around her body as an homage to Britney Spears’ 2001 “I’m a Slave 4 U” performance. A supercut of such moments also featured Miley Cyrus twerking onstage with Robin Thicke in 2013 and Madonna’s 1984 “Like A Virgin” performance, among many others.

Tonight’s show ushered in a new era of iconic moments, as well, from Sabrina Carpenter’s kissing an alien during a mashup of her newest singles to Benson Boone’s flips off his piano and Roan’s performance in front of a burning castle.

No more Moon People for Queen Bey

Rebecca Cohen

Beyoncé was nominated for three awards tonight — song of the year, best trending video and most iconic performance — but ultimately did not win any.

The lackluster VMAs showing follows her being shut out of the Country Music Award nominations that were announced on Monday after coming out with her first country album, "Cowboy Carter."

Beyoncé still holds the record for most VMAs with 30 statues, although she's now tied with Taylor Swift, who won seven awards tonight.

Swift won the award in 2023 for “Anti-Hero” and in 2022 for “All Too Well (10 minute version) (Taylor’s Version).”

Rauw Alejandro leaves a piece of Puerto Rico on stage

Before the show began, Rauw Alejandro told interviewers he wanted to honor his Puerto Rican culture on stage tonight. He added that he also wanted to throw in nods to New York, where many Puerto Ricans have created tight-knit communities.

Alejandro delivered by honoring his Nuyorican roots on a set that emulated the city's apartment rooftops. He was joined by dancers and musicians who helped bring a slice of the island's musical heritage to the stage.

Chappell Roan performs: 'Your favorite drag queen's favorite artist'

After a loving intro from drag queen Sasha Colby, Chappell Roan took the VMAs stage in full armor in front of a burning castle as she sang "Good Luck, Babe!" her hit summer single that has helped propel her to stardom.

Roan's rise to fame began with an opening act during Olivia Rodrigo's "Guts" tour in the Spring, which then paved the way for a sold-out festival circuit, all leading her to tonight's stage, where she is nominated for her first major awards including best new artist.

Roan credits Colby with a slogan she's used to reference herself — "your favorite artist's favorite artist." After shouting that on stage this summer, Roan said she got the quote from Colby, who coined "your favorite drag queen's favorite drag queen."

Colby introduced Roan tonight as "your favorite drag queen’s favorite artist."

Performances galore but few moon people

It's been about an hour since anyone accepted an award, with the exception of Katy Perry's pre-announced Vanguard award.

While there were quite a few awards announced in the pre-show livestream, no other statues have been given out since Taylor Swift and Post Malone accepted the best collaboration award.

Katy Perry performs her most nostalgic hits ahead of accepting Vanguard Award

Katy Perry gave a high-energy performance ahead of her acceptance of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

She was introduced by her fiancé Orlando Bloom, who gave a heartfelt tribute to the longtime pop star, noting that “the remarkable world she creates has brought a sense of joy and laughter, inspiring generations of people from all over the world.”

She took the stage in a cloud of colored smoke, held up by cables as she sang a mashup of “Dark Horse” and “E.T.” in mid-air. The singer then brought Doechii onstage for a snippet of their upcoming release “I’M HIS, HE’S MINE.”

Katy Perry performed a medley of hits including "I Kissed a Girl" and "Teenage Dream."

Perry continued the show with a nostalgic string of her fan-favorites — “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “I Kissed a Girl” and “Firework" — before ending with her latest release "LIFETIMES" and sharing a post-performance kiss with Bloom.

"Thank you. I did that all on my first day of my period, too, can you believe it?" she said breathlessly as she accepted her Moon Person.

"I just want to say with my whole heart: Do whatever it takes to stay true to yourself and true to your art," she added in her speech. "Turn off social media, safeguard your mental health, pause, touch grass."

Taylor Swift ditches the punk plaid for sparkly green

Always one to keep people on their toes, Taylor Swift has made an unexpected outfit change.

While Swift arrived in a punk plaid ensemble, she appears to now be seated in a sparkling green gown. The singer was seen on an online stream in a beaded outfit that had a spaceship display, a likely nod to her performance of "Down Bad" during the "The Eras Tour," which features visuals of a UFO.

LISA rocks out on the VMA stage

With pyrotechnics and leather outfits, LISA put on a rockin' show for her performance on the VMAs stage.

She started her performance with her latest single "New Woman," although Rosalia, her collaborator on the song, was absent.

She then transitioned into "Rockstar," which is nominated in the best K-Pop category.

Megan Thee Stallion pays homage to Britney Spears' 'I'm a Slave 4U'

With a large yellow snake wrapped around her body, Megan Thee Stallion gave a nod to Britney Spears' iconic "I'm a Slave 4 U" VMAs performance by wearing the same green and blue two piece while performing her hosting duties.

"I don’t know this snake, this snake don’t know me," she said. She then screamed as someone tried to remove the snake from her body.

Chappell Roan’s success marks the rise of the ‘middle class’ pop star

Photo Illustration: (L-R)Tinashe, Charli xcx, Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter

Chappell Roan is no longer just “your favorite artist’s favorite artist.”

Roan, who is known for the queer themes in her music and her drag-inspired aesthetic, is among the recent crop of artists who have hit unforeseen career highs in recent months, despite being considered part of pop music’s “middle class.”

This designation has typically been associated with artists who have cultivated devout  online fan bases , but who are not necessarily household names.

A-list pop stardom has become increasingly difficult to achieve. But some music industry experts say the recent rise of Roan and others — including Sabrina Carpenter, Tinashe and Charli XCX — is a testament to their authenticity and ability to foster such strong fandoms.

Taylor Swift honors 9/11 victims

Taylor Swift just took home her second Moon Person of the night with a win for best collaboration for “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone. She opened her acceptance speech with an acknowledgement of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks given the event's location in New York.

Speaking about her music video, Swift described her collaborator Post Malone as “everyone in music’s favorite person to collaborate with.”

“And it is because you are so ridiculously talented, you are so versatile and you’re the most down to earth person,” Swift said. “Honestly, so unfailingly polite, it has taken me forever to get him to stop calling me ‘ma’am.’”

Flavor Flav gifts Jordan Chiles a replacement medal

After being stripped of her Olympic bronze medal shortly after leaving Paris, Flavor Flav followed through on his promise to award Jordan Chiles a custom-made replacement.

"I gotcha something that they can't take away from you," Flavor Flav told the two-time Olympian on the VMAs stage. He bestowed her with a bronze clock necklace and tied it on her neck himself.

Megan Thee Stallion opens the show with a nod to the Paris Games

The host opened the show with a message to everyone watching.

“Shout out to my hotties, and my haties ‘cause I know y’all watching too,” she said.

She donned a Team USA-inspired leotard while greeting viewers. She then passed the mic to Jordan Chiles and Flavor Flav.

Flav gave Chiles a bronze clock and promised to gift her the prize money she lost after her bronze medal was stripped from her after last month's Paris Olympic Games.

Best collaboration

Eminem brings his mob of Slim Shadys to open the VMAs

Opening the show with his song "Houdini," off of his latest album "The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)," the rapper brought a gang of his alter egos to support him on stage. He also brought a doppelgänger who looked strikingly similar to his younger self.

Jelly Roll also made a virtual appearance to perform with Eminem on their collaboration "Somebody Save Me."

Lenny Kravitz dedicates best rock win to late mother

The VMA for best rock video went to Lenny Kravitz for “Human” from his 2024 album, “Blue Electric Light.”

He dedicated the award to his late mother, who died in 1995.

"31 years ago, my mother was with me," he said after his win. "The last time she was with me at an award show was at the VMAs and so I dedicate this to her.”

Kravitz will perform at tonight's ceremony for the first time since 1998.

Taylor Swift is on the carpet

The highly anticipated arrival of Taylor Swift is finally here as the singer poses for the cameras ahead of tonight's show. She won a VMA for song of summer before even setting foot on the carpet.

Image: Taylor Swift

Swift is known for using her award show outfits as a way to clue in fans about her upcoming projects. Last year, Swift's black and white dress at the Grammys hinted at her announcement of the album "The Tortured Poets Department" later during the show. That came after she announced her album "Midnights" at the 2022 VMAs, wearing a silver-draped dress that hinted at a new "Bejewled" era for the singer.

So with fans eager for her to drop "reputation (Taylor's Version)," is her outfit signaling any easter eggs for news to come?

'Fortnight' nabs song of summer

Taylor Swift has officially won her first award of the night.

Her single "Fortnight" from "The Tortured Poets Department" won song of the summer, which was announced on the VMAs red carpet before the awards show even kicked off.

If she takes home at least six more of the 12 awards she's nominated for tonight, she will match Beyoncé's record for most VMA wins.

Megan Thee Stallion wins best trending video

Megan Thee Stallion was caught off guard by the news of her own win as pre-show host Kevan Kenney abruptly handed her a Moon Person. The rapper, who is also hosting the VMAs this year, clinched the best trending video award for “Mamushi” featuring Yuki Chiba.

“Me and Yuki recorded that song in Japan in like, a small apartment studio, and we were just messing around,” Megan said, adding that she was "shocked" by fans' embrace of the song.

The singer is up for six more categories tonight.

Expect a tribute to 9/11

This year’s show had originally been scheduled for Sept. 10 but was moved to Sept. 11 because the broadcast would clash with Tuesday’s presidential debate.

The show’s producers plan to recognize the 9/11 attacks by donating proceeds from the show to 9/11 Day, a nonprofit that organizes community service programs on the anniversary of the attacks, and Tuesday’s Children, which helps support impacted families.

Taylor Swift has a chance to break Beyoncé's record

Pop sensation Taylor Swift is the most nominated artist of the night, with the potential to make history by breaking fellow nominee Beyoncé's record.

Swift is up for a total of 12 awards, including video of the year, artist of the year and song of the year. Currently, Swift has a total of 23 VMAs throughout her career and is seven awards shy of matching Beyoncé's record of 30.

But Beyoncé is also nominated for several VMAs tonight following the success of her country album "Cowboy Carter" — which was notably snubbed from the Country Music Association Awards earlier this week. The album's hit song, "Texas Hold 'Em," is up against Swift's "Fortnight" for song of the year.

Naomi Scott attends her first VMAs

British actress and singer Naomi Scott, who plays pop star Skye Riley in the upcoming film “Smile 2,” said her character drew inspiration from some of the pop stars here tonight.

As for the movie itself, slated to release in theaters Oct. 18, the first-time VMA attendee teased it as being “kind of like the first movie, but on steroids and a lot of party drugs.

“It’s very intense, but it’s so fun and so unhinged and also kind of funny,” Scott said. “My director brought me in to watch some of the edit, and I remember just being like, I wish I was here with my best friend, because we would just be grabbing each other laughing and screaming.”

'Dreams don’t have deadlines:' LL Cool J on his first album in a decade

After a 10-year break from releasing music, LL Cool J dropped his 14th studio album, "The Force," on Friday.

"I wanted to show the people that I came up with that your dreams don't have deadlines," he said on the MTV pre-show. "You could continue to do this thing at a high level. You don't have to be successful at one age and then all of a sudden taper off and wallow around in mediocrity."

He is set to perform in tonight’s ceremony, but the legendary artist's relationship with the VMAs started 27 years ago. LL Cool J became the first rap artist to win the Video Vanguard Award in 1997, which he noted as his favorite VMAs moment.

"I am a kid raised on hip hop ... So that was an unbelievable moment," he said of the honor.

Jordan Chiles makes VMAs debut after bronze medal debacle

Two-time Olympic champion Jordan Chiles made her first public appearances on Wednesday since she was stripped of her bronze medal from the Paris Olympic Games.

"This is a dream come true to be able to come to the VMAs," Chiles said. "Meeting people, especially celebrities out here." Despite the big names in the room, Chiles said her Olympic resume has prepared her for this moment.

Competing is "harder than doing an interview," she joked.

Hours before the VMAs ceremony, Chiles spoke at the Forbes Power Women’s Summit in New York City, where she said the controversy was more about "peace" and "justice" for her than the medal itself.

"The biggest thing that was taken from me was the recognition of who I was, not just my sport, but the person I am ... the star is never going to get dimmed." she said.

Katy Perry arrives at the VMAs ahead of her Vanguard award

Katy Perry is serving a wet look on the carpet. She will be performing a medley of her biggest hits later tonight in celebration of her Video Vanguard award, which celebrates an artists' career and impact on pop culture.

Addison Rae gives showgirl chic

The TikToker-turned-pop star arrived on the carpet wearing a white feathery bikini set with a tulle bustle.

She said the look was partly inspired by Madonna, who wore a wedding dress in her performance of "Like A Virgin" during the 1984 VMAs.

The "Diet Pepsi" singer is a presenter at tonight's awards.

Chappell Roan is thinking about her ex tonight

Chappell, who is nominated for best new artist alongside three other categories, said it would be “awesome” if she won — noting that she’s “never won anything.” If she does cinch the category, she said, she wants to give a shoutout to her ex: “You got me here.”

Chappell said she’s a bit nervous about performing in front of her peers tonight, many of whom she said she looks up to. The pop star teased in a red-carpet interview with MTV that her performance will include “a lot of technical things going on that I’ve never had happen.”

She also shared a few details about the medieval look she donned on the carpet.

“That robe that I had on ... was 300 years old. And then the rug that was rolled out is 600 years old," she said.

Most iconic performance

Katy Perry wins the most iconic performance VMA for “Roar.”

Best alternative

The winner for best alternative is Benson Boone for his song “Beautiful Things,” awarded during the pre-show livestream on YouTube.

Boone thanked the fans for all their support and their votes as he accepted the Moon Man statue in an interview on the carpet.

“You know what? This has been the craziest year of my life so far,” Boone said. “I’m truly honored to be in this crowd of people... it’s been pretty insane for me.”

When asked about his performance to come later tonight, Boone just said, “lot of sparkles, lots of flips.”

Halsey teases performance of new song ‘Ego’

Halsey put the red in red carpet tonight (although the VMAs carpet is technically black), with long, bright red locks and a gown to match.

She also teased her later performance of a new song called "Ego," which officially dropped on Friday as the fourth single in the lead up to her highly-anticipated album, "The Great Impersonator."

In June, the singer revealed she has been battling chronic illnesses in a social media post tied to the release of "The End," another song on her upcoming album. In the post, Halsey did not confirm any diagnoses.

"long story short, i'm Lucky to be alive. short story long, i wrote an album," Halsey wrote in the post.

The VMAs are pop culture gold

If the Grammys are the music industry's biggest night, the VMAs may be the most entertaining.

Since the first VMAs were held in New York City's Radio City Music Hall in 1984, an astounding number of prolific moments in pop culture history have taken place with the iconic "moon person" statue standing nearby.

From Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 ceremony to Madonna, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera shocking early 2000's America by kissing onstage, the VMAs have a knack for crystalizing cultural moments. Many of these moments will likely be revisited tonight in the new most iconic performance category.

'Twin, where have you been?' Muni Long arrives on the carpet

The singer's TikTok-viral song "Made For Me" is nominated in the best R&B category.

The Kelces are wishing nominees luck — 'except if you're up against Tay'

Jason and Travis Kelce are excited for everyone nominated for a moon man tonight, but they're especially hyped for Taylor Swift.

The brothers plugged the award show as one of the advertisements in this morning's episode of their podcast "New Heights." Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce proudly pointed out that his girlfriend was up for multiple VMA awards.

"Let's go, Tay! Come on, Tay!" Jason Kelce cheered.

"Stay on top! Here we go," Travis Kelce said while clapping. "Wishing everybody the best though."

"Unless you're up against Tay, then I hope you lose," his brother joked.

Anitta teases a surprise

Brazilian sensation Anitta has arrived at the VMAs ahead of her expected performance in a wedding-style dress and veil.

“It’s a little spoiler of something,” the singer told MTV on the red carpet. “But I can’t say much.”

LISA looks like a 'Rockstar'

LISA, known for her work as part of K-Pop group Blackpink and as a soloist, is nominated in the best K-Pop category for her single "Rockstar." She is also expected to perform tonight.

It's a special birthday for the VMAs

This year marks the 40th anniversary of MTV's Video Music Awards.

Over the course of its history, the VMAs have remained a cornerstone of the music awards landscape despite drastic changes in the music, video and broadcast landscapes.

The show has kept its relevance in part by delivering moments of controversy that ultimately shaped pop culture history. It's also managed to integrate digital platforms into its programming, including by adding categories that honor social media success and even allowing viewers to vote for their favorite artists via Instagram stories.

The rapid rise of Chappell Roan

Once a niche pop singer from Missouri trying to make it in Los Angeles, Chappell Roan has skyrocketed to mainstream fame over the past year. Known for the queer themes in her music as well as her drag-inspired aesthetic, Roan’s high-energy music — paired with her deeply emotional lyricism — has earned her a cult following online.

Chappell Roan

Her debut album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess,” released last September, became a sleeper hit that further cemented her status this summer as a rising pop icon. The album charted in the top five on the U.S. Billboard 200 earlier this year, after Roan’s stint as Olivia Rodrigo’s opening act and the release of her hit followup single, “Good Luck, Babe!”

The artist has been open in speaking about the impact of sudden fame on her mental health, recently telling Rolling Stone that "it's been a really hard adjustment."

As is tradition with the winners of this award, Perry will perform a medley of her biggest hits.

Karol G's look is fire

VMAs 2024 winners: Taylor Swift has a big night as Chappell Roan wins best new artist

Portrait of Edward Segarra

From political declarations to pop stardom, Taylor Swift is hittin' all her marks.

"The Tortured Poets Department" singer, who made waves last night with her endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, took home the coveted video of the year at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday.

She won the award alongside Post Malone for their collaboration "Fortnight."

In typical Swift fashion, the pop superstar gave a heartfelt shoutout to the Swifties for their ardent support. And in a nod to her recent presidential endorsement, she also encouraged viewers to register to vote.

Swift, who led the VMAs pack with 10 nominations, also won the first award of the night − best collaboration − for her Malone duet.

The "I Can Do it with a Broken Heart" singer thanked Malone, who accompanied her onstage, and used her acceptance speech to pay tribute to the victims of the 9/11 attacks (the VMAs aired on the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attack).

"Waking up this morning in New York on Sept. 11," Swift said. "Everyone we lost, and that is the most important thing about today."

Swift's Eras Tour opening act Sabrina Carpenter also won big at the VMAs. Carpenter, who has dominated the summer with her disco-pop smash "Espresso," nabbed her first moon person for song of the year.

International acts similarly made a splash at the star-studded awards ceremony, which aired live from New York's UBS Arena. South African singer Tyla won best Afrobeats, while Thai rapper and Blackpink member Lisa scored best K-pop.

Ariana Brockington

Taylor Swift began the VMAs with a win and ended the night with another moon person in hand.

She spoke about the wonderful experience of making, directing and editing the video. Swift mentioned all the actors and collaborators who helped make "Fortnight" before telling a sweet story about beau Travis Kelce.

"Something that I'll always remember is that when I would finish a take and I'd say 'Cut' and we'd be done with that take, I would always just hear someone, like cheering and like, 'Woo!' from across the studio where we were shooting it."

She added, "And that one person was my boyfriend Travis," as the crowd erupted.

"Everything this man touches turns to happiness and fun and magic so I want to thank him for adding that to our shoot," she sweetly said.

Swift then thanked the Swifties for all the support they've shown to her for "The Tortured Poets Department" and "The Eras Tour."

She ended her speech by pointing out that it was a fan-voted award and encouraged every adult to register to vote.

Why Britney Spears was everywhere at this year’s VMAs — kind of

Liz Calvario

It was a night filled with nods and tributes dedicated to the princess of pop Britney Spears.

Megan Thee Stallion wore a Spears "I’m a Slave 4 U"-inspired ensemble complete with a live boa constrictor, Sabrina Carpenter also inserted a snippet of a Spears' song and had an "Oops!... I Did It Again" astronaut nod in her performance.

But among the most stylish and talk-worthy included Tate McRae who donned a netted black mini dress over a black bra and underwear. The look was reminiscent of Spears' look at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 6.

During the NY-held awards show, Spears wore black undergarments under a lacy, long-sleeved mini dress.

Tate McRae / Britney Spears

McRae also kept her hair loose and wavy and had softer makeup to resemble Spears.

The moments serve to prove the impact Spears had and continues to have on the awards show. The "Stronger" singer was a MTV and VMAs staple in the early aughts, being the star of many headline-making moments.

Spears made her VMAs debut in 1999 when she performed "... Baby One More Time," re-creating her school room video. Then there was her Rolling Stones "Satisfaction" cover at the 2000s ceremony , which transitioned to her steamy and nearly nude, sequin catsuit and performance of "Oops!...I Did It Again."

Let's not forget when she and Christina Aguilera performed with Madonna at the 2003 VMAs. Spears and Aguilera first sang "Like a Virgin" and were joined by Madonna to sing "Hollywood." This performance included the infamous moment when Madonna shared a kiss with Spears and Aguilera.

How many 2024 VMAs did Taylor Swift win?

Elena Nicolaou

Rounding out the night, let's see how Taylor Swift fared. She was up for 12 awards total. She won:

  • Song of the summer — "Fortnight"
  • Best collaboration — "Fortnight"
  • Artist of the year
  • Best direction — "Fortnight"
  • Best editing — “Fortnight”
  • Video of the year — "Fortnight"

At seven wins, that brings her total count from 23 to 30. She now ties with Beyoncé.

Anitta wins best Latin for 'Mil Veces', praises Karol G in speech

While collecting the best Latin award for her track “Mil Veces,” Anitta took the opportunity to praise Karol G.

Anitta accepts the Best Latin award for "Mil Veces" during the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.

After thanking her fans, she said, "What an amazing year for the Latin culture. I need to acknowledge that Karol G had an amazing, amazing year."

She added, "What an amazing tour. The whole world was watching. So I also want to say congrats to all the nominees, too."

She expressed her gratitude for Brazil and said she was honored to represent her country at the award show each year.

Taylor Swift sings along to Katy Perry at VMAs years after rumored feud

If there was anyone enjoying herself at the VMAs, it was Taylor Swift — specifically, while she was watching Katy Perry perform.

Before accepting the Video Vanguard Award, Perry sang some of her greatest hits, and Swift appeared to know every word. She mouthed along to "California Gurls" and "Firework" with passion and danced with just as much.

The two stars were once rumored to be embroiled in a feud but have seemed to move on based on recent interactions.

They reunited at one of Swift’s “Eras Tour” stops in Sydney, Australia, which Perry  attended with fellow singer Rita Ora .

Perry shared pics and videos of the fun Feb. 23  on Instagram . She included a photo of her and Swift smiling as they embraced.

“Got to see an old friend shine tonight,” Perry captioned her collection.

Lenny Kravitz puts a spin on an old classic with Quavo's help

A shirtless Lenny Kravitz rocked out on the VMAs stage with a white feathered boa around his shoulders.

See Carson Daly's nostalgic return to VMAs: 'Every day after school I was with your mother'

Before Carson Daly became a TODAY co-host, he was known as the face of the iconic MTV music video countdown show "Total Request Live," also known as "TRL."

He made a nostalgic return to the VMAs to present the best K-pop category. But before announcing the winner, he honored the victims of Sept. 11, saying "on this day, 23 years ago, never forget our heroes, the first responders, and the families of the fallen."

Daly then said it was "an honor" to be there presenting for the 40th anniversary of the VMAs.

Carson Daly at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.

"For those of you who are a little too young to know who I am, I was the host of a show on MTV called 'Total Request Live' or 'TRL,' a very long time ago," he said. "It was the best, kids going crazy in Times Square, and every day after school I was with your mother, so please, tell her I said hi."

Daly then went on to hand out an award "to a new generation of fans going crazy for a category that didn't even exist back in the day."

Before presenting the award, which went to LISA, Daly and his son Jackson Daly posed for photos on the black carpet. The two chatted with TODAY on the red carpet and how he felt returning to his old stomping grounds with his son.

“It’s fun to be with my son, have Jackson here,” he said. “He’s heard a lot about the VMAs over the years and we don’t live far, so this is like a home event for us.”

He also shared how it felt like going to a college reunion.

Rauw Alejandro dazzles the VMAs stage

Rauw Alejandro, a first-time VMA nominee, opted for medley of his biggest hits for his performance.

Halsey has a sudden hair change for VMAs performance

Halsey walked the red carpet for the VMAs with flowing red locks. When she appeared on the stage to perform "Ego," though, she had a totally new look, sporting a red pixie cut.

Halsey turned up the emotion for the rock performance, which unfolded in a set that looked like a home's garage. She played guitar beside other women musicians.

Sabrina Carpenter wins 1st VMA Award — and it's a major one

After an exhilarating performance of three of her latest hits, Sabrina Carpenter was pleasantly surprised to win her first VMA — and it was a major one.

The singer took home the moon person for song of the year for “Espresso.”

Sabrina Carpenter (front) accepts the Song of the Year award for "Espresso" from Miranda Lambert during the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on.

"I've literally never won one of these. This is really special. The first people I want to thank are the fans," she said. "I just want to say you guys are the reason that I get to do what I love, but also the reason that we get to have so much fun and share music with each other. And I just feel so great, but I have the best truly, the best fans. That sounds cheesy, but I love you. Thank you."

Carpenter went on to thank her managers, her family and even her "cats and dogs that are at home watching."

"And thank you to the people that made 'Espresso,'" she continued, naming them, before saying, "I love you guys so much, I love making music with you, and I can't wait to share more with the world."

Megan Thee Stallion brings out Yuki Chiba to perform 'Mamushi'

Megan Thee Stallion briefly took a break from her hosting duties to perform her viral hit "Mamushi" with Yuki Chiba.

The rapper began her VMAs medley with "Boa" before launching into more songs from her latest album, like "B.A.S." and "HISS."

Benson Boone gets acrobatic while performing his viral song 'Beautiful Things'

Benson Boone performed his hit, "Beautiful Things," which has over 1 billion streams on Spotify, at the VMAs.

Clad in a sparkly blue jumpsuit, Boone gradually ramped up the energy of his performance. He started off demure and went to brat, so to speak. At one point, he forward flipped into the chorus.

Benson Boone performs during the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.

His performance won over audiences . "The...jumpsuit. The high notes. The FLIPS. I’m impressed… Benson Boone knows how to put on a SHOW!" one X user wrote. Another didn't know why Boone did the flip, but it made them "cackle ."

Others took to all caps to express their awe.

Sabrina Carpenter, in the audience, couldn't hide her shock at the flip.

Watch Taylor Swift join Karol G's merengue dance at the VMAs

If there's one thing you can count on during an awards show that Taylor Swift attends, it's that she's going to dance without a care in the world.

The pop star did just that right from the beginning of the VMAs. As cameras panned to her, she was seen shaking her hips and singing along to a number of performances.

Swift then had a fun merengue moment with Karol G while the Colombian singer performed her merengue hit “Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido.”

As Karol went up to Swift and Post Malone, the " Lovers" singer swayed her body, holding onto the skirt of her corset and dancing along. One of Karol's dancers also took Malone's hand and twirled herself.

Tyla wins best Afrobeats song, calling it a 'big moment' for African music

Tyla, the South African superstar up for best new artist, won her first VMA of the evening when "Water" took best Afrobeats song.

"The global impact that 'Water' has had on the world just proves that African music can be pop music too," she said in her speech.

She took a moment to speak about the categorization of the song, too.

"This is so special, but also bittersweet because there is a tendency to group all artists under Afrobeats," she said. "African music is so diverse."

Katy Perry delivers epic medley of hits, receives Video Vanguard Award

Every VMAs, MTV selects one artist to bestow the coveted Video Vanguard Award. This year's recipient is none other than Katy Perry, who has been an MTV staple with fun and dynamic music videos like "Hot N Cold," "California Gurls," "Firework," "Roar," "Waking Up in Vegas" and more.

Perry's partner Orlando Bloom introduced her, calling her a "global superstar who brings love light and her unique sense of humor to everything."

Perry kicked off her medley performance by singing "Dark Horse," followed by "E.T.," "I’m His, He’s Mine" with doechii, and "California Gurls."

The fun didn't stop there as she continued with "Teenage Dream," "I Kissed A Girl," "Firework" and more.

"Thank you so much to MTV for believing in my weirdness from day one and for helping artists extend their world," she said after Bloom gave her the award.

She also thanked everyone on her team and who has helped her along the way as an artist, as well as her fans, Bloom and her daughter Daisy.

Perry concluded her speech with a poignant message: "I just want to say with my whole heart, do whatever it takes to stay true to yourself and turn off social media, safeguard your mental health. Pause, touch grass, and do what you were born to do, just like I was born to do this."

The mega honor comes on the heels of Perry’s upcoming new album, “143,” which is set to come out next week. The singer has already released the song "Woman's World" and its accompanying music video, which upon its released received mixed reactions.

Her second single from the album was "Lifetimes," which also was controversial a fter it was revealed that Perry’s production company didn’t get permission to film in a protected area in Spain. She also sang this song during the end of her VMAs performance.

A label spokesperson told TODAY.com in a statement, "We adhered to all regulations associated with filming in this area and have the utmost respect for this location and the officials tasked with protecting it.”

Orlando Bloom reminds us of Katy Perry's real name at the VMAs

Before Katy Perry took the stage to perform and accept the Video Vanguard Award, her fiancé Orlando Bloom introduced her as the woman he knows.

"You fell in love with her as Katy Perry. I fell in love with her as Katheryn Hudson," he said, referring to her real name.

Perry, in a previous interview, called Katy Perry a "character" she created, saying, “I was scared that if you saw me, Katheryn Hudson, the girl wearing the Bioré strip on my nose, you’d be like, 'That’s not glamorous.'"

He went on to draw a contrast between Perry's public-facing image as a pop star, and the woman he knows — a mom to their daughter, Daisy , and a step-mom to his son, Flynn, from a previous relationship.

"You know her as a global superstar who brings love, light and her unique sense of humor to every music video she creates. I know her as a mother, as a partner, who brings that same love and joy to our family in moments when we most needed it," he said.

"Her music and remarkable world she creates brought a sense of joy and laughter, inspiring generations of people from all over the world," he added.

He finished his speech by saying, "Congratulations on this honor, baby, I'm so proud of you." Then he said the name of upcoming album, "143" — code for "I love you."

In her acceptance speech, she thanked Bloom for keeping her "grounded" and "doing the dishes," which may be a reference to an NFSW revelation she included on Alex Cooper's "Call Her Daddy" podcast .

As she transitioned into her second song, a snippet from Britney Spears' "Oops!…I Did It Again" was heard as an astronaut appeared, as well as a blue alien.

As the extraterrestrial and astronaut got close on stage during "Taste," Carpenter pushed off the moon person and exchanged a kiss with the alien — a la Spears and Madonna.

The silver sequined gown, paired with a silver necklace and voluminous wavy hair, brought a sense of Old Hollywood glamour to the awards show. Madonna felt the same way and previously wore the piece to the 1991 Oscars. The queen of pop also rocked a red lip and a blonde curled bob when wearing it.

Carpenter, meanwhile, has become a star to watch this summer. Her song “Espresso “ became a viral hit leading up to the release of her album “Short n’ Sweet” in August.

Shaboozey tells us the weirdest place he’s heard ‘Tipsy’

Shaboozey continues to dominate the charts and rightfully so.

The singer’s song “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” topped Billboard’s Country Airplay chart for a seventh week. It surpassed Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” which held on strong for six week at No. 1 in 2006, according to Billboard.

With everyone listening to the artist’s hit, TODAY.com asked Shaboozey on the black carpet the craziest place he’s heard “A Bar Song (Tipsy)”

“A little bodega in New York was pretty interesting,” he said. “Anywhere I hear it is pretty cool, honestly.”

Later, Roan spoke to Nessa about her look, revealing that it was years in the making.

"That robe that I had on — it's gone — was 300 years old," she shared. "Then the rug that was rolled out is 600 years old."

She said the items were rented and added, "That is the most expensive thing I would ever own."

15 years ago Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift at the 2009 VMAs

As we wait for the 2024 Video Music Awards to begin, let's take a trip back 15 years ago to one of the most infamous ceremonies.

At the 2009 ceremony on Sept. 13, Taylor Swift was accepting the award for best female video for her song "You Belong With Me" when Ye, the artist formally known as Kanye West, interrupted her speech and took the microphone.

The rapper then proceeded to tell the crowd that he believed Beyoncé, who was nominated in the same category for her song "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," had "one of the best videos of all time."

Kayne West jumps onstage as Taylor Swift accepts her award for the "Best Female Video" award during the 2009 MTV VMA's.

Beyoncé and the crowd were shocked as Kanye darted off the stage, marking the beginning of his long-standing feud with Swift.

At the end of the ceremony, Beyoncé won the video of the year award and invited Swift to return to the stage and finish her speech.

Fifteen years later, Beyoncé and Swift continued to dominate award shows and both landed multiple nominations at the 2024 VMAs.

Welcome to the black carpet at the VMAs

This year's MTV VMAs red carpet had an edgier look as the stars stepped onto a black carpet.

One could say the carpet and step-and-repeat gave off galaxy vibes, which is fitting since the awards ceremony is known for giving winners a moon person.

Celebrities and guests posed in front of an inky backdrop adorned with a silver metallic VMAs sign.

The VMAs had a dark and edgier look for its 2024 celebration.

It's a big night for the "Hot Girl Summer" rapper, who is also expected to perform during the awards ceremony. Additionally, she is up for seven awards, including best hip-hip video for "Boa" and song of the summer for her collaboration with FloRilla, "Wanna Be."

What Travis Kelce said about Taylor Swift ahead of the VMAs

“Hopefully Taylor can walk away with a few, she’s nominated for about 10 of those things. Hopefully she can walk away with some moon men," the Kansas City Chiefs star said in video shared online .

Jason Kelce also cheered on the singer, saying, "Let's go Tay, come on Tay!"

As Travis Kelce clapped, he said he wished everybody the best. But big bro Jason Kelce wasn't for that, adding, “Unless you’re up against Tay, then I hope you lose.”

Will Taylor Swift be at the MTV VMAs? A look at her schedule

Is Taylor Swift going to the VMAs? Chances are, yes. While she's not listed among the performers, she is arguably the draw of the evening. This is a chance to see if Swift makes VMAs history – or see how close she gets.

At 23 total, Swift is currently eight awards from breaking Beyoncé's record of 30 VMAs. She is nominated for 12 awards and Beyoncé is up for three.

Her schedule seems free. Swift is on a break from the "Eras Tour" and was spotted in New York City  at the U.S. Open with her beau Travis Kelce . The VMAs are held in Elmont, New York this year.

TODAY.com has reached out to Swift for comment.

Only Beyoncé has more VMAs than Taylor Swift. Will that change tonight?

Taylor Swift is on the cusp of becoming the artist with the most VMAs. Currently, the record is held by Beyoncé, who has 30 wins, per the Guinness Book of World Records .

Swift now has 23, and is up for 12 awards at tonight's awards show. She is nominated for the following awards:

  • Song of the summer: “Fortnight”
  • VMAs Most Iconic Performance: “You Belong With Me”
  • Video of the year: “Fortnight”
  • Song of the year: “Fortnight”
  • Best collaboration: “Fortnight”
  • Best direction: “Fortnight”
  • Best cinematography: “Fortnight”
  • Best visual effects: “Fortnight”
  • Best art direction: “Fortnight”
  • Best editing: “Fortnight”

If she wins seven awards, she will tie with Beyoncé. If she wins eight, she could win. At last year’s VMAs, Swift took home nine awards, so the eight needed to break the record is not impossible.

Beyoncé is also nominated at the 2023 VMAs, however. She's up for:

  • Song of the year: "Texas Hold 'Em"
  • VMAs Most Iconic Performance: “Love on Top”
  • Best trending video: "Texas Hold 'Em"

The Best, Worst, and Most Surprising Moments of the 2024 MTV VMAs

A fter adjusting its air date to make room for the presidential debate on Tuesday, the MTV Video Music Awards took place tonight live from UBS Arena in New York—its first time at that particular venue after spending the last two years at the Prudential Center in New Jersey.

Hosted by Megan Thee Stallion , the VMAs celebrated its 40th(!) anniversary with performances and appearances from a cast of celebrities, many of whom are closely intertwined with MTV's pop-culture history, from show opener Eminem to Video Vanguard winner Katy Perry, presenter and onetime Total Request Live VJ Carson Daly, and fellow presenter Cyndi Lauper, who won the first-ever Moonman for Best Female Video in 1984. Even Lenny Kravitz performed at the VMAs for the first time in 25 years.

The VMAs likewise rolled out the carpet for newcomers, such as Best New Artist nominees and first-time performers Chappell Roan and Benson Boone, six-time nominee Sabrina Carpenter (also performing for the first time), and the recently solo BLACKPINK K-pop singer LISA.

Meanwhile, VMAs legend Taylor Swift led the night with 10 nominations, including Video of the Year for "Fortnight" with Post Malone. No stranger to making VMAs history, Swift won Video of the Year in 2022 and 2023, for "Anti-Hero" and "All Too Well: The Short Film," respectively. Swift ended up winning the top prize of the night yet again, in addition to Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration, Best Pop, Best Direction, and Best Editing. She also became the most awarded artist in VMAs history, besting Beyoncé.

Here are the best, worst, and most dramatic moments from the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.

Most Underwhelming Entrance: Eminem

Eminem is an indelible part of MTV's history, sure. But his opening performance of " Houdini "— kicked off with dozens of fake Shadys running up onstage, a callback to his 2000 performance—and "Somebody Save Me" with JellyRoll—intercut with home movies of Em's kids—was a snore. A schmaltzy snore.

Most Adorably Speechless: Post Malone

🚨| Taylor Swift and Post Malone on stage accepting the award for "Best Collaboration" for "Fortnight" at the 2024 #VMAs ! pic.twitter.com/R05JW8r1ci — The Eras Tour (@tswifterastour) September 12, 2024

Winning the first award of the night for Best Collaboration ("Fortnight"), Taylor Swift and Post Malone walked onstage together as seasoned VMAs champions. After Swift paid tribute to the victims of 9/11, she joked about how Post Malone couldn't stop calling her "ma'am" as they worked together. Then, she passed the mic to Posty, who had to take a full pause as he searched for words to describe working with Swift. The VMAs don't have too many off-script, truly genuine moments anymore, but this was a sweet and wholesome way to get the night going.

Most Effortlessly Fun: Karol G

Just one year after making her VMAs debut, Karol G came back to remind everyone why she's such a masterful performer. Singing her merengue new single “Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido," the Colombian pop singer made her set an interactive one by dancing all over the venue—that included shaking it with Taylor Swift, Post Malone, and Camilla Cabello.

Most Smoke Inhalation: Shawn Mendes

In a move that felt determined to prove he can be a rock star, too, Shawn Mendes rolled out a few stage rugs, an acoustic guitar, and some really, really overzealous backing band members to debut a live version of “Isn’t That Enough” (from his forthcoming album Shawn ). With plumes of smoke billowing out behind him, Mendes tried his very best to channel actual soulful, sexy crooners like Prince—but ended up barely hanging onto the high notes.

Most Missed No-Show: Britney Spears

Given everything she's endured, it was unlikely that Britney Spears would actually attend the VMAs, even for the show's 40th anniversary. But that didn't stop multiple singers from paying tribute to her historic VMAs outfits (Addison Rae, Tate McRae, host Megan Thee Stallion wearing a snake) and her Y2K-era performances, with Sabrina Carpenter including multiple references to Spears in her VMAs performance and Halsey shouting her out on the red carpet. Spears might never attend another award show (as is her right; protect that mental health), but her performances of "I'm A Slave 4 U" and “Oops!...I Did It Again” live on.

Most Out Of This World: Sabrina Carpenter

Left Shark, who? It's all about Left Alien now. Sabrina Carpenter made an instant-classic VMAs debut with a medley performance of Short n’ Sweet singles "Please Please Please," "Taste," and "Espresso," which, in a meta move, appeared to reference the award show's trophy (the Moon Man, since renamed the Moon Person in 2017). Carpenter floated down into a sea of dancers dressed as astronauts and even recalled her "Taste" video by making out with one very lucky blue alien.

Most Mid Video Vanguard: Katy Perry

Katy Perry has been in something of a PR nightmare ever since she released a snippet of the since maligned "Woman's World" earlier this summer, partially for its cringe, 2016-girlboss-era lyrics (which she later somewhat dubiously explained were meant to be satire) and even more for the fact that it was produced by Dr. Luke, whom Kesha accused of being "sexually, physically, verbally and emotionally" abusive in 2014. (They reached a settlement in 2023.) The remainder of the rollout for her forthcoming album, 143 , hasn't gone much better. If you were hoping that Perry would bring some of the colorful world-building she founded her career on to her Video Vanguard medley performance, you'd end up disappointed, as the entire segment was relatively one-note, with hardly any costume changes (save for when Perry threw on a pair of metallic butterfly wings), set switch-ups, or creativity other than "beige corset top" and "outer space theme."

After a combination of well-delivered, full-throated songs like "E.T.," new single "I'm His, He's Mine" with a scene-stealing doechii, "California Gurls," "Teenage Dream," "Firework," and problematic fave "I Kissed A Girl," Perry gave a semi-loaded thank you speech that seemed to jab back at critics. “There are so many things that have to align to have a long and successful career as an artist. There are no decade-long accidents." True, but some of the shade must have sunken in, as there was nary a mention of "Woman's World."

Most Gen Z Freddie Mercury: Benson Boone

For his debut VMAs set, the mustachioed 22-year-old singer let his vocals, costuming, and gymnastics take center stage. Performing "Beautiful Things," Boone evoked '70s sequined extravagance in a deep-cut, shimmery blue number. Look out, he's coming for your crown, Harry Styles.

Shiniest Armor: Chappell Roan

After getting into it with a red-carpet photographer (reminder to fans: pop stars are allowed to set boundaries), Chappell Roan gave an inspired, Medieval-themed performance of her mega-hit "Good Luck, Babe!" Against a wall of pyrotechnics, the Best New Artist-nominated singer wore a full suit of armor and danced alongside a group of knights, bringing to mind the 1971 Disney classic Bedknobs And Broomsticks . It also sounds very, very sweaty. Roan later won the Moon Person for Best New Artist and gave a sincere acceptance speech shouting out the LGBTQIA+ community: “And for all the queer kids in the Midwest watching right now: I see you, I understand you, because I am one of you.”

“For all the queer kids in the Midwest watching right now: I see you, I understand you, because I’m one of you. And don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t be exactly who you wanna be, b**ch.” — Chappell Roan accepting Best New Artist at the #VMAs pic.twitter.com/XuVOkMB3iU — Pop Crave (@PopCrave) September 12, 2024

Most Authentic Call For Diversity: Tyla

When South African singer Tyla won the Best Afrobeats Moon Person for " Water ,” she helpfully reminded audiences—and MTV gatekeepers—that the genre is not just a catch-all for music marketing purposes. (Hey, Grammys, are you taking notes?) "I know there's a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats," Tyla said in her acceptance speech, which came off as a heartfelt attempt to educate the crowd and viewers at home. "It's a thing, and even though Afrobeats has run things and has opened so many doors for us, African music is so diverse. It's more than just Afrobeats." She proceeded to name-drop many of her fellow nominees, including Tems, Ayra Starr, and Burna Boy .

Best Garage Band: Halsey

In an overtly Avril-coded set, Halsey rocked the VMAs like it was 2003 and we never stopped wearing neckties as belts. Debuting her new song "Ego," Halsey broke out her electric guitar, extremely high-top Chucks, and live backing band. Rounding out the picture? A set created to look like a suburban two-story home with a two-car garage. The performance comes just a few months after the singer said she’s “ lucky to be alive ” since adjusting to life with lupus and a rare white blood cell disorder.

Best Homage to Queens of Pop: Basically Everyone

VMAs fashion is as storied as the awards show itself, and attendees brought their A-game for the show’s 40th anniversary. Sabrina Carpenter’s gown referenced a 1991 Madonna-at-the-Oscars look; Tate McRae did a Britney Spears tribute; Glorilla recalled the late TLC rapper Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes; Addison Rae also had Madonna on the mind; and Megan Thee Stallion wore a reimagined version of Spears’ "I'm A Slave 4 U" VMAs costume while feigning fear over her rubber snake.

Moment When Every Millennial Turned To Dust

First, Carson Daly walked on stage and reminded everyone watching that he used to host a little MTV countdown show called Total Request Live , causing anyone over 30 to lose what was left of their hearing. They got it back when Lenny Kravitz stepped on stage to perform spirited renditions of Kravitz classic “Are You Gonna Go My Way,” a new version of 1998’s “Fly Away” (now called “FLY” with Quavo), and “Human,” from his latest album, Blue Electric Light . Kravitz turned 60 this year, and he owned that VMAs stage with the type of expertise that only comes with experience.

Best VMAs Reprise

While helping celebrate the anniversary of Def Jam Records, which coincidentally also turns 40 this year, LL Cool J performed a medley with his onetime labelmates Public Enemy, running through hits like “Mama Said Knock You Out” and “Bring the Noise.” He closed the set with “Doin’ It,” which the two-time VMA winner also performed on the award show’s stage back in 1996. LL was also there to promote a new album, The Force , released earlier this month.

Best Use Of “My Boyfriend Travis”

Taylor Swift and Post Malone, predictably, won Video of the Year for “Fortnight,” which served as a kind of bookend to the evening, as the video also won the show’s first award for Best Collaboration. After thanking all of the concerned parties (including frequent Martin Scorsese collaborator, cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto) and remarking on how ironically fun it was to direct such a moody video, Swift gave Her Boyfriend(™) Travis Kelce a special shout-out: “Everything this man touches turns to happiness and fun and magic.” She also asked reminded viewers over 18, for the second time in 24 hours , to register to vote. Finally, fun fact: Swift is now the most-awarded act in VMAs history.

Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Eminem and More to Perform at 2024 VMAs

Karol G, Shawn Mendes, Halsey and Lenny Kravitz are also slated to perform at the MTV awards show on Sept. 11

Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Eminem

Update: Eminem will open the  2024 VMAs on Sept. 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT from New York’s UBS Arena. The iconic rapper, who has won 15 Grammys in his career, will treat audiences to the first TV show performance from his recently released 12th studio LP, “The Death of Slim Shady.”

The rapper is nominated in eight categories, including Video of the Year, Best Hip-Hop and Song of the Summer. If Eminem wins one award this year, that would solidify his status as the most celebrated male artist in show history. Currently, he holds the titles of most wins by a rap artist and stands as the second most nominated VMA artist behind Madonna.

The MTV awards show will be hosted by Megan Thee Stallion, who will also be performing. After the release of her “MEGAN” album and her global “Hot Girl Summer Tour,” this will mark her second year in a row performing at the event. She is up for a total of seven nominations this year.

Eminem, Halyna Hutchins and Alec Baldwin (Getty Images)

They will join Anitta, Karol G, LL Cool J, Shawn Mendes, Benson Boone, Halsey, Lenny Kravitz and LISA as well as the previously announced first wave performers Camila Cabello, Chappell Roan, GloRilla, Rauw Alejandro and Sabrina Carpenter.

Last year marked Karol G’s first Moon Person for Best Collaboration as well as her debut performance on the MTV stage. To date, she has won five Latin Grammy Awards as well as one Grammy and shattered records with her “Mañana Será Bonito” World Tour, which is now the highest-grossing Latin tour by a woman in boxscore history. Karol G is also the second artist ever to top the Billboard 200 with an all-Spanish-language album. This year she’s nominated in the Best Latin category.

A two-time VMAs winner, this will mark Shawn Mendes’ first time back on the MTV stage in a while. From 2017 to 2019, Mendes had three back-to-back performances at the VMAs. This time around, he will be giving the first televised performance from his fifth studio album, the self-titled “Shawn.”

Megan Thee Stallion

Speaking of iconic VMAs performers, LL Cool J will be returning this year. The rapper performed at the awards show last year during its 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop tribute, which marked the first time LL Cool J returned to that stage in over 25 years. He will be performing new music from his upcoming album, “THE FORCE.” Over the course of his career, LL Cool J became the first hip-hop artist to amass 10 consecutive platinum-plus selling albums.

As for Anitta, this will mark her third consecutive VMAs performance. This time around, she will be performing a medley of “Savage Funk” and “Alegria” as well as the world premiere of “Paradise,” which will feature guest appearances by Fat Joe, DJ Khaled and Tiago PZK. In 2022, Anitta became the first-ever Brazilian to win at the VMAs. This time around, she’s hoping for her third consecutive Best Latin win. Out of her three total nomination nods, two are in that category.

A four-time Grammy-winning rock legend, Lenny Kravitz will be making his VMAs return this year. The last time he was on the MTV stage was in 1998 when he played guitar alongside Madonna for a performance of “Ray of Light.” Over the course of his career, Kravitz has sold over 40 million albums and recently released his 12th critically acclaimed studio album, “Blue Electric Light.” His single “Human” is up for Best Rock this year.

A multi-Platinum and chart-topping artist, Halsey has been nominated for 14 VMAs to date. Previously, she took home the Moon Person for Best K-Pop alongside BTS in 2019, a year in which she was also nominated for Artist of the Year. This year, she will return to perform a new song off her upcoming album.

LISA previously made VMAs history in 2022 by becoming the first solo female K-pop star and Korean soloist to win an award. This year, she is up for four awards, including Best K-pop and Best Choreography. The global superstar and world-renowned rapper, singer, dancer and style icon will make her solo debut on MTV’s main stage.

Chappell Roan on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

Camila Cabello is a four-time VMA winner who has also been nominated for a Grammy. September will mark her third performance at the MTV awards show, and this time around she will perform songs off of her fourth studio album, “C, XOXO.” She is nominated for Best Pop.

That’s it for the returning performers. As for the rest, Benson Boone, Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, GloRilla and Rauw Alejandro will all be taking the MTV stage for the first time.

Boone recently set a record for the most-streamed track during the first half of 2024 thanks to “Beautiful Things,” which achieved over 2 billion streams. The MTV PUSH artist and first-time VMAs nominee looks to take home his first Moon Person and is up for three categories including Best New Artist and Best Alternative.

This year will mark the first VMAs performance for the trailblazing Chappell Roan. The “Hot To Go” singer broke into the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 for the first time with “Good Luck Babe” and has received critical acclaim for her album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.” She’s nominated for Best New Artist and MTV Push Performance of the Year after setting all-time attendance records at Lollapalooza and Governor’s Ball earlier this summer.

Taylor Swift performs on stage during the "Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour" at Wembley Stadium on June 21, 2024 in London, England

Though she’s appeared at the awards show before, Carpenter will be making her main stage debut this year. During last year’s VMAs pre-show, she performed a mashup of “Feather” and “Nonsense.” She’s up for six awards in her first year as a nominee, including Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop, Best Direction, Best Editing and Best Art Direction.

Last but certainly not least, GloRilla and Rauw Alejandro will also be taking the MTV stage for the first time. GloRilla has made history as the longest-charting female rap hitmaker of 2024. Previously, she had been nominated five times, and this year she is nominated for Best Hip-Hop, Best Collaboration and MTV Push Performance of the Year. As for Alejandro, he will debut a performance from his forthcoming fifth studio album and is nominated for Best Latin, Best Cinematography and Best Choreography.

As for presenters, Addison Rae, Cyndi Lauper and DJ Khaled are stepping up to the jobs. They will join Alessandra Ambrosio, Amelia Dimoldenberg, Big Sean, Busta Rhymes, Carson Daly, Damiano David of Måneskin, DANNA, DJ Khaled, Fat Joe, Flavor Flav, French Montana, Halle Bailey, Jordan Chiles, Lil Nas X, Miranda Lambert, Naomi Scott, Paris Hilton, Suki Waterhouse, Thalía and Tinashe as presenters. Additionally, MTV PUSH artists Jessie Murph, known for her debut album “That Ain’t No Man That’s The Devil,” and Teddy Swims, known for his hits its “Lose Control” and “The Door,” will perform on the Extended Play Stage.

The pre-show will be hosted by Nessa, Dometi Pongo and Kevan Kenney, with a special performance by LE SSERAFIM. The 90-minute event will air from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, MTV2, CMT and Logo. A MTV PUSH performer and first-time VMAs performer, K-pop girl group recently released their 4th Mini Album “CRAZY.”

Previously, the VMAs were supposed to take place on Sept. 10. However, the ceremony was pushed to Sept. 11 as to not overlap with the planned Presidential debate on Sept. 10. In observance of the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, MTV will once again support the nonprofit 9/11 Day, which organizes the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, as well as Tuesday’s Children, which serves the families of 9/11 victims.

More performers will be announced in the coming weeks ahead of the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 11.

Taylor swift sweeps vmas 2023, makes history with most video of the year wins.

Taylor Swift swept the MTV VMAs 2023 Tuesday night, taking home nine of the coveted Moon Person awards , including Video, Song and Artist of the Year.

The superstar, 33, took the stage at New Jersey’s Prudential Center throughout the night to claim her awards for the hit song “Anti-Hero.”

Along with the three top awards, she won Best Pop and Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Show of the Summer and Album of the Year for “Midnights.”

She was nominated for 11 total awards, losing out on Best Editing and Song of the Summer.

She thanked her team multiple times, bringing them onstage with her to share the spotlight. She also gave a shoutout to her longtime writing partner Jack Antonoff, who was not in attendance.

The “Karma” singer even made history as the first person to win Video of the Year four times, previously winning for “All Too Well: The Short Film,” “Bad Blood” and “You Need to Calm Down.”

Swift’s VMAs appearance comes weeks after she referenced Kanye West’s infamous 2009 interruption of her acceptance speech for Best Female Video trophy for “You Belong With Me.”

The “Cruel Summer” singer took aim at the rapper , 46, during the “Evermore” set of her fourth Eras Tour show at Mexico City’s Foro Sol stadium on Aug. 27.

“It’s the best way to be interrupted, by the way, just people chanting your name,” Swift told the crowd after her voice was temporarily drowned out by thunderous applause and ear-shattering screams.

“It’s really the only way to be interrupted,” she added. “And I would know.”

During the infamous moment back in 2009, West grabbed the mic from Swift’s hands to declare that Beyoncé should have won the award instead.

“Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’mma let you finish. But Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!” West said at the time of Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” clip.

When Beyoncé won later on in the evening, she invited Swift onstage to “have her moment.”

Swift has had many VMAs moments — and wins — since. She has a whopping 14 Moon Person statuettes to her name, trailing only behind Madonna, who has 20.

Swift could beat the Queen of Pop if she wins at least six of her eight categories during tonight’s ceremony.

This year, Swift is nominated for Artist of the Year , Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop, Best Cinematography, Best Direction, Best Visual Effects and Best Editing, all for her 2022 single “Anti-Hero.”

The 2024 MTV VMA Nominations Are Finally Here: See the Complete List

Taylor swift could break a record at the 2024 mtv video music awards sept. 11. see the full list of nominations including post malone, ariana grande and eminem as frontrunners..

One of the most iconic award shows is back.

Indeed, the MTV Video Music Awards —which will air live on Sept. 11 from UBS Arena in New York—is nearly here, and with that, a reminder of all the nominations. With multiple nods to Taylor Swift , Ariana Grande and SZA , this year’s show is full of fierce competition—as well as some newcomers, too. After all, Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan have received their first-ever recognition from the MTV ceremony after their 2024 breakouts.

Still, the face behind the Eras Tour leads the VMAs pack with 12 nominations—and could break another record at this year’s ceremony if she comes away with the Video of the Year win for “Fortnight.”

After taking the night’s biggest honor in 2022 for “All Too Well” and 2023 for “Anti-Hero,” Taylor could be the first artist to not only three-peat in the category, but also win the accolade five times (she also previously won for “Bad Blood” in 2015 and “You Need to Calm Down” in 2019).

In addition to “Fortnight” earning Taylor eight nominations at this year’s VMAs, she is also up for Best Pop and Artist of the Year.

And since he’s featured on the collaboration with Taylor, Post Malone follows closely behind her with 11 nominations, including a double nod in the Best Collaboration category for “Fortnight” and “I Had Some Help” with Morgan Wallen .

As for who else may walk away with a trophy, Eminem earned himself eight nods while Ariana, Sabrina, SZA and host Megan Thee Stallion all tied with seven nominations apiece.

But that's not all, as Olivia Rodrigo is named in four categories for videos across her Guts era—including recognition for her “obsessed,” in Best Cinematography, “bad idea, right?” in Best Art Direction and “get him back!” in Best Visual Effects.

Keep reading to see every nomination for the 2024 VMAs.

Taylor Swift Reflects on Art of Songwriting as She Wins Song of the Year at 2023 VMAs: 'Maybe We All Have the Same Issues'

The singer-songwriter earned the award for her No. 1 smash "Anti-Hero"

It's certainly not exhausting rooting for Taylor Swift at the VMAs!

The pop icon, 33, scored big at the 2023 MTV VMA when she took home the award for song of the year for her Midnights smash "Anti-Hero" Tuesday night.

After being presented with the trophy by Nelly Furtado and Timbaland — who himself bowed down to the singer-songwriter — Swift gave hugs to all in her row, including Eras Tour opener Sabrina Carpenter .

"I'm sorry, I'm just very millennial-triggered by my choices of presenters tonight," Swift said while receiving the award, shortly after already scooping the trophy for best pop from *NSYNC . "You guys are gonna do something right? Oh my God."

Swift then took a moment to express that she's "really really lucky" to create music alongside collaborator Jack Antonoff , who she called "one of my best friends in the world."

"He's so talented it's incomprehensible. And I'm so lucky I've been making music with him since we worked on an album called 1898. We'll continue working together til' 2089."

"I am so so happy because this is validating my favorite part of what I get to do," she later added of her latest Moon Person. "I started writing songs when I was 12 and it always starts with a very isolated emotion. A very specific type of insecurity or self-loathing that I feel like I'm the only one who is healing in that moment. But then when I go out on tour and I've got a stadium singing words back to me, it brings me to this very relaxing feeling of, 'Maybe we all have the same issues.' Thank you so much to the fans. I love you so much, this means the world to me."

Bad Bunny made history Sunday at the Video Music Awards, becoming the first non-English-language performer to win the prize for artist of the year.

The Puerto Rican reggaeton sensation was nominated for the honor alongside Drake, Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles, Jack Harlow, Lil Nas X and Lizzo. The actor and vocalist was also in the running for song of the summer (“Me Porto Bonito”); best Latin (“Tití Me Preguntó”); and album of the year (“Un Verano Sin Ti”).

“I have been saying it and I always believed from the beginning that I could become great,” Bad Bunny said in his acceptance speech, which the Associated Press translated from Spanish.

“That I could become one of the biggest stars in the world without having to change my culture, my language, my jargon. I am Benito Antonio Martínez from Puerto Rico to the whole world. Thank you!”

During the MTV telecast, Bad Bunny performed live from Yankee Stadium in New York as part of his World’s Hottest Tour. Other acts in the VMA performance lineup this year included Harlow, Nicki Minaj, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blackpink, Panic! at the Disco, Anitta, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Lizzo.

In the middle of his electrifying performance of “Tití Me Preguntó,” Bad Bunny thrilled his L GBTQ fans by locking lips with both female and male backup dancers. The “Ojitos Lindos” hitmaker’s Yankee Stadium moment marked the first VMA performance broadcast from the iconic venue.

‘De Puerto Rico, Para el Mundo Entero:’ Bad Bunny Named VMA Artist of the Year After Performing at Yankee Stadium

  • By Tomás Mier

The VMAs are taking it to the World’s Hottest Tour . Bad Bunny made an appearance at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards , live from Yankees Stadium, to perform “Tití Me Preguntó” and accept the award for artist of the year from none other than LA Lakers’ Carmelo Anthony.

“I don’t have the words to describe what I’m feeling. The pride I’m feeling to be at Yankee Stadium accepting this award,” said Bad Bunny, completely in Spanish. “I always knew from the start that I could become the biggest stars without having to change my culture or my language.”

He ended, “Yo soy Benito Antonio Martínez, de Puerto Rico para el mundo entero.” (In English: “I’m Benito Antonio Martinez. From Puerto Rico to the entire world.”)

His performance of “Tití Me Preguntó” opened with the Puerto Rican heartthrob carrying out a to-be bride before singing lyrics about having “muchas novias” as clips of the massive audience flashed onscreen.

Before his performance aired on MTV, videos of Bad Bunny accepting the trophy for artist of the year circulated on Twitter. He was seen holding up the trophy before thanking his audience in New York. (Nicki Minaj presented him with the award, showing off her Spanish and dance moves. “Ay Dios mío!” said Minaj.)

“Not only are his hits well-constructed, veritable bangers that have marked an era in a short amount of time, the soft heart of every song is filled with a kind of nostalgia and emotion only Bad Bunny knows how to deliver,” read a Rolling Stone review of his first of two New York shows.

“Once my albums come out, I sometimes listen to them once and I don’t tune in again,” he told Rolling Stone about his album Un Verano Sin Ti , which is up for album of the year. “This one, I’ve just kept listening.” (His songs currently on replay? “ Moscow Mule ” and “ Otro Atardecer ” with the Marías.)
