Travel tips for Europe trips

There are plenty of options when it comes to exploring the continent. Some of the most popular destinations to visit on a tour of Europe include Italy, Greece, Spain, and Ireland.

On our travel packages to Europe, you can choose to explore a particular location in depth, such as on a week-long Paris City Stay or a two-week Grand Tour of Italy .

If you're looking for a multi-country trip, you can join our Grand Tour of Europe: London to Rome , for a taste of several destinations. Our team of regional experts is available to help you find the adventure that aligns with your interests.

Discover six things to experience your first time traveling to Europe →

Europe is a year-round destination with varying climates across its many countries and regions. The best time to visit Europe depends on what type of experience you’d like to have and which destinations you’ll be visiting.

 • Summer. A popular time to travel to Europe is summer because warm, sunny days lend themselves to exploring the outdoors. In July, the average high temperature in London, England, is in the 70s Fahrenheit—while in Rome, Italy, the average high is in the 80s.
 • Spring and Fall. Some travelers prefer to travel on our Europe tour packages during the spring and fall because temperatures are more comfortable and popular sites are less crowded.
 • Winter. A wonderful time to take a European tour is the winter. During this time of year, travelers can stroll through festive holiday markets, visit excellent museums, and settle in for tasty meals of seasonal specialties. To take the stress out of planning a winter trip, we even offer Europe trip packages specifically designed for visiting Christmas markets .

One of the main benefits of joining our guided tours of Europe is having the opportunity to visit must-see sites with an expert leading the way. When you go guided with Go Ahead we’ll help you skip the long lines at popular landmarks. Here are some attractions you’ll get the opportunity to see on our group tours of Europe:

 • The Colosseum in Rome, Italy
 • The National Archaeological Museum in Naples, Italy
 • St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Italy
 • The Alhambra in Granada, Spain
 • The Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain
 • La Sagrada Família church in Barcelona, Spain
 • The Acropolis in Athens, Greece
 • The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands
 • St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland
 • The Titanic Museum in Belfast, Northern Ireland
 • The Hungarian Parliament building in Budapest, Hungary
 • Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria
 • The Viking Ship Museum in Oslo, Norway
 • Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen, Denmark

We recommend you spend at least six days in Europe. While our most popular Europe tours run from 10–14 days, you can enjoy a shorter trip if you limit your tour to one country or visit a handful of cities in neighboring countries.

Yes! The holidays are an exciting time to travel on our Europe trips because they offer an exceptional opportunity to visit Europe’s Christmas Markets and to experience countries’ unique holiday traditions. The holidays are a magical time in many European countries, allowing you to soak in the seasonal ambiance, enjoy festive food, and pick up unique gifts.

Thankfully, that’s a tough question to answer, as so many European countries offer delicious food. Ultimately, it’s a matter of personal preference, so you’re sure to find something you love no matter which country you visit. One strong contender for the top spot, however, is Italy.

Best known for its pasta, pizza, cheeses, and gelato, Italy is a foodie’s delight. That’s because the purest expression of Italian cooking relies on farm-fresh ingredients, and the cuisine changes from region to region. Fresh, delicious, and unlike anything you’ve tried outside the country, Italian food never disappoints the palate.

Wondering what to eat in Italy? Check out these regional dishes →

Another foodie's favorite destination in Europe is France. From its boeuf bourguignon to its pain au chocolat, France is known for its world-class culinary scene and timeless favorite dishes. While you’re guaranteed to taste delicious dishes no matter where you travel to France , the type of French food you’ll find depends on the region and season. The north of France features heavier dishes; the south features fresh fish, lean meat, and grilled vegetables.

While individual countries take pride in their languages, English is widely spoken in Europe.

We recommend packing light for your trip to Europe. One suitcase and one carry-on per person is a good guideline to follow; you should feel comfortable managing your baggage at the airport. After you’ve reserved one of our Europe tour packages, we’ll give you information about how to prepare for your particular trip and even share a packing list in our mobile app.

 • Sun protection. For all our trips, especially during the summer months in Europe, we recommend bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
 • Layers. For tours of Europe, we recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
 • Comfortable walking shoes. Because you’ll be exploring new destinations with local guides while on your trip, a comfortable pair of walking shoes is essential. Whether hitting the landmarks of London or on a walking tour of Amsterdam, you’ll be glad you brought your most comfortable footwear.
 • Dressier attire. You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance on any of our Europe trips.
 • Full-coverage layers for religious sites. In Europe, it is preferable not to visit churches, temples, or other religious sites with bare legs or shoulders, and entrance may be denied on this basis.
 • Other must-bring items. A camera to take photos during your journey, and a notebook for jotting down notes or recommendations your Tour Director shares.

Booked Mystical Egypt tour with...

Booked Mystical Egypt tour with them visiting Cairo and a 03 Nights Cruise from Luxor to Aswan in May. All services were perfect since the time we arrived at the airport, we were met by a hospitable Indus Representative who helped us with the purchase of local SIM and currency exchange. He was always there in time to assist for transfers. The Amwaj Cruise which we took from Luxor to Aswan was a Gem. We had great guides and all sightseeing worked like a clockwork. We enjoyed visiting Karnak Temples, Temples of Edfu, Kom Ombo and the boat ride to see Phillae Temple. Evening entertainment on cruise were great and engaging. In Cairo and Aswan, we had ample leisure time to explore on own, the Pyramids were impressive and visiting Khan e Khalili was fun. Overall and impressive and enjoyable tour, Thanks to Indus Travels!

Recently went on a Rhine...

Recently went on a Rhine River Cruise, a first for me. I must say the experience was exceptional, their tagline says. The group I was with were some of the most fun and interesting set of people I've ever traveled with. The ground transportation arrangements were top notch and comfortable. Variety in menu that we were provided with in the cruise was astounding. I was a bit worried if they'd have much options for me as I'm a vegetarian. But they not only had options, the taste was something I'd savor for foreseeable future. There's a reason Rhine cruises are popular owing to it's serene and picturesque route. Guided tours were very informative and gave us a bit of an insight of German culture. We had good amount of time to explore the towns on our own too. Strasbourg and Cochem were my favorite stops. Luckily the weather worked in our favour and it didn't rain the way it was predicted originally. No one from our group wanted the tour to end. If this trip was any indication, I can't wait to book my next trip with Indus Travels.

My wife and I travelled...

My wife and I travelled with Indus on the essentials Portugal Spain Switzerland and Italy tour last October and had the time of our lives. The tour was very well planned we visited a lot of the highlights the countries had to offer. The tour went very smoothly with knowledgeable guides and courteous drivers. We would highly recommend travelling with Indus.

Indus Travel runs a highly...

Indus Travel runs a highly professional organization. From customer service to brochures, bookings, tour guides, etc. and the consideration for their customers is superb. This was the first time I had travelled with Indus Travels. We took the Taste of Portugal Tour. Group numbers are small, accommodation comfortable and food excellent. The expert guide who accompanied us was outstanding - passionate, informative, engaging, and entertaining. This company is obviously at the heart of the itinerary planning, and attention to detail is second to none. I would highly recommend this company to anyone wanting a fun, relaxed, educational vacation with fine food - they will deliver! We will never forget this trip and we are already planning for another one to Wonders of Italy, Vienna, Budapest, and Prague.

Best of Italy

Indus Travels did an excellent job planning the trip to Italy. We were on Best of Italy in Oct 2022. The tour was 5 stars all the way. The hotel accommodations were comfortable and clean & guides were top-notch.

We were looking for a...

We were looking for a customized, small group tour. We took a chance on Indus without knowing much about the company. We just returned from our trip to Greece and are more than highly please and satisfied with our experience. They planned an amazing itinerary, booked amazing hotels, hired knowledgeable tour guides and arranged high quality transportation services. Everyone went above and beyond to please us. We are already planning a trip for next year (2024) and will definitely use Indus to do so.

Glimpse of Egypt Quick paced tour...

Glimpse of Egypt Quick paced tour taken after Egypt opened back up to tourists, particularly Americans. Went in November and weather was beautiful. Decent hotels and overnight Nile cruise. You will see a lot on this tour and be aware there are some early wake ups. Lots of walking but doable if you're in decent shape. Overall a fun tour with all the sites you have only seen in books!

Indus has some very good...

Indus has some very good tour itineraries at very competitive prices. I called with several specific questions about land only vs. air included, and they were immediately responsive, and within hours had the website description updated to assist anyone else who might have the same questions. I called again with specific questions about insurance, and the first person to answer the phone was completely knowledgeable based on past experience and gave me good advice. Four stars vs. five only because I just made the booking yesterday, and withhold one pending how this whole trip turns out two months from now.

Excellent tour company with quick service and support. We loved that there is 100% refund if you had to change anything as long as your within certain time limits. A very professional company with a huge selection of different tours and several dates to choose from.

The staff at TourHub were very responsive to all of my questions and more! They provided me with all the information I needed to book our trip in a very short period of time. I am very impressed with this company and looking forward to our tour in 2025!

I have never been much of a tour person, but this company offers so many options! I love the fact that they consolidate many options so that you have all the adventures in one location.

Customer service was prompt in responding to any questions I had, and offering suggestions on tour options. Looking forward to our adventure in September!

I love that each destination and hotel accommodation is listed. Makes planning or even deciding to take the trip so much easier. Each time I emailed a question, I got a response right away. So far, I'm very impressed and looking forward to the trip that we booked for next year.

I just heard about tourhub. What a fantastic collection of holidays. I booked a holiday to Morocco and had a few questions, for which I received prompt and useful responses. Would highly recommend

The complete italy and greece trip itinerary.

greece italy switzerland tour

Blessed with sunny climates, thousands of years of history, idyllic beaches, and the most delicious and fresh cuisine, both Italy and Greece are both fantastic choices for a Mediterranean vacation. This Italy and Greece itinerary is perfect for anyone that wants to explore both countries.

It can be so difficult to choose one over the other!

On an Italy trip , you can explore a Seventh Wonder of the World, sail on mountain lakes, and see world-famous artworks like Michelangelo’s David. In Greece , you can island-hop in the Cyclades, stroll through white-washed cobblestone villages, and witness Greece’s ancient history at the Acropolis.

We’ve been lucky enough to visit both Italy and Greece. They are both incredible countries that I love. I’ve been getting a lot of questions recently about combining a trip to Greece and Italy. If you’ve got enough time to explore both destinations, I say go for it!

I would recommend allotting at least 10 days to each country. I’ve written this Italy and Greece itinerary to help you decide where to go, but if you’d like a more detailed Italy and Greece Trip Itinerary, I recommend downloading our combo guide written by myself and Kids are a Trip .

Should I go to Italy or Greece?

Both countries have similarities but they offer totally different cultural experiences. So, if you have the time, why not travel to Italy and Greece?!

greece italy switzerland tour

Combining visits to both countries into a three-week vacation package will result in the most life-changing, memorable trip.

Italy Packing List

Following a three-week Italy and Greece itinerary also makes sense on a practical level. They’re both Mediterranean countries separated only by the Adriatic Sea, so there are lots of flight, ferry, cruise, and sightseeing tour travel options.

You won’t have to pack for two completely different sets of climates, either. Both countries boast dry and sunny weather for most of the year.

As you digest this three-week Italy and Greece itinerary and learn all the cool things to do in both places, you’ll realize that you simply cannot miss out on any of these amazing experiences.

Best Time to Visit Italy and Greece

The best time to visit both Greece and Italy is in the shoulder season from April – June and September – October. Italy’s and Greece’s warm climate ensures you will still be able to enjoy all the outdoor activities that you can do in summer while avoiding the intense, often dangerous heat of midsummer as well as the crowds and high prices.

Getting Between Italy and Greece

Unless you enjoy long bus rides or hauling your luggage between train connections, the best way to travel from Italy to Greece is either by flying or taking the ferry.

A local specialist in traveling throughout this region will probably tell you that flying is way faster and cheaper. But you might be in the mood (and have the time) for an epic sailing adventure! Either way, you have lots of options.

Fly between Greece and Italy

Kefalonia Greece

Thanks to Europe’s several budget/low-cost airlines, you could get round-trip flights booked from Italy to Greece for less than $40! In peak season, you can still find tickets for less than $100 if you book ahead.

Check out airlines like Jet2, Easyjet, and Ryanair for the best deals. Aegean Airlines, ITA, and Volotea also fly between Italy and Greece so it’s worth checking those too.

Ferry from Greece and Italy

The ferry schedule between Venice (where the Italy portion of this itinerary ends) and Athens (where the Greece section begins) is fairly limited. There are only four sailings a week and single tickets start from $250+ per person.

Oh, the journey time for this ferry ride is approximately 33 hours.

So no, you’re probably not going to sail from Italy to Greece or from Greece to Italy, but it’s an option if you have a big pile of books you want to read sitting on your nightstand. You also don’t need to rent a car to follow this itinerary so there’s no reason why you would have to take a ferry.

What’s the Best Way to Visit Greece and Italy in One Trip?

There are several ways to organize your Greece and Italy itinerary and each of them is great for different reasons. You should choose the option that best fits your needs. Take into consideration budget, mobility, time, and style of travel. For example, if you get very sea sick and don’t like being able to be on your own schedule, then a cruise might not be the best option for you.

If you don’t like to be around a lot of people, a tour might not be a good idea fit either. But if you’re traveling solo and you don’t feel comfortable planning and running your own trip, a do-it-yourself option may not be a good choice for you. I’ll lay out the pros and cons of each option below.

Cost Analysis of Italy and Greece Trip Options

Greece and italy tours.

Embarking on a three-week adventure to two countries that you might not have visited before can be daunting, even a guaranteed amazing trip like this one.

If you’re nervous or traveling solo, booking a multi-day Italy or Greece tour has a lot of benefits. You’ll get a tour director who is a local specialist in traveling this region with a lot of insider tips . Often, tours include some meals like a welcome and farewell dinner, plus you’ll get to make friends with your like-minded, fellow group members.

This two week Italy and Greece tour is a great option for anyone looking to travel in a group and not have to worry about any logistics. It’s also a fantastic price for a trip this length and has great reviews. It’s run by Trafalgar which is a very reputable tour company.

Pros of taking an Italy and Greece Tour

 • Most things are taken care of for you
 • Ability to pay over time
 • Great option for solo travelers who want to make friends
 • Good for those who don’t drive

Cons of taking an Italy and Greece Tour

 • It’s very people-y
 • You’re not on your own schedule
 • Not a lot of flexibility
 • Can be pricey

Italy and Greece Cruises

Another great way to explore these two beautiful countries is to take a cruise of the Aegean and Adriatic seas, allowing you to visit port cities in Greece and Italy. There are several great cruise options. If you’re on a budget, this 16-day cruise is only $3,200 USD and hits so many incredible places in both countries.

Pros of taking an Italy and Greece Cruise

 • Accommodations and most food is taken care of for you
 • Chances to make friends for solo travelers
 • You get to see a lot of ocean

Cons of taking an Italy and Greece Cruise

 • Not great if you get seasick
 • Can be expensive
 • You don’t get to see a lot of the interior of each country
 • You’re only in each location for a short time

Do it Yourself Italy and Greece Itinerary

If you don’t think a tour or cruise will be a good option for you, then a DIY Italy and Greece Itinerary is probably going to be the best fit.

This is a detailed, day-by-day itinerary for exploring Italy and Greece over three weeks. If you’re based in the US, there tend to be more direct flights to Italy than Greece and they’re often more affordable.

However, you might personally find it more convenient and cheaper to fly to Greece. Feel free to book round-trip flights to one city in Italy or Greece or fly into one country and out of the other. It all depends on what works for your schedule, vacation time, and the deals you can find.

If you want a more detailed itinerary, I highly recommend downloading our Italy Greece Combo guides. They cover 20 days (10 in each country) and walk you through each day, giving you recommendations, schedules, tours, restaurants, and more. We’ve helped thousands of people travel to Italy and Greece with these guides.

Italy-Itinerary-Cinque-Terre

Visiting all of the iconic cities and resort towns in Italy would take months if not years! This 10-day Italy itinerary is the perfect balance between bustling cities and picturesque countryside.

You’ll visit the capital city of ancient Rome, the floating city of Venice, and Florence as well as the regions of the Amalfi Coast, Cinque Terre, and the northern lakes.

greece italy switzerland tour

Day 1: Arrive in Rome

If you’re flying from the continental US, Rome is around nine hours ahead to six hours ahead. Excluding early morning departures, this itinerary works for anyone arriving in Rome on a red-eye flight or the day before.

Without delay, welcome to the Eternal City! Rome is Italy’s bustling ancient capital and the best place to begin a first-time Italian adventure.

After breakfast, spend your first morning on a Vespa or walking tour to see the highlights and orientate yourself in this sprawling city. Here are some of the top sights you can expect to see on a guided tour of modern and ancient Rome:

 • Trevi Fountain
 • The Pantheon
 • Spanish Steps
 • Monument to Victor Emmanuel II
 • Roman Forum
 • Castel Sant’Angelo
 • Piazza Navona
 • Piazza del Popolo
 • Campo De Fiori Market

Ask your tour director for advice on where to eat a typical Italian meal during your time in Rome. They are a local specialist, after all! Try street food like the Roman suppli (a fried rice ball similar to Sicilian arancini) or porchetta panini as well as delicious dishes in restaurants.

You should leave room in your schedule to visit the Colosseum, not just see the outside. Book a guided tour to avoid long lines and to learn about the history.

On your first free evening, head across the River Tiber to the cool Trastevere neighborhood.

Things to do in Rome in One Day

Day 2: Rome

It’s only possible to snap photos of the Trevi Fountain without the crowds if you visit very early in the morning. If you’d rather sleep in, after breakfast, spend your morning in Vatican City.

Don’t miss St. Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in the world, and the Vatican Museums, home of the Sistine Chapel. Book a tour of the Vatican Museums so you don’t have to wait in a long line.

After visiting Vatican City, book a cooking class so you can learn how to make more authentic meals in contrast to the Italian dishes you’re probably used to making at home! And it goes without saying, but you should be eating as much homemade gelato in Rome as you can too.

Walk off all those delicious plates of Roman pasta and desserts in Villa Borghese before spending the evening in the Jewish Quarter.

Italy-Travel-Guide-Amalfi

Day 3: Amalfi Coast

It’s time to leave Rome and head south to the Amalfi Coast . This UNESCO-listed region offers charming hillside villages, calm waters, and beautiful white sands.

It takes around three and a half hours to travel there via Naples on the train , so set off early.

Here are some fun things to do during your free day on the Amalfi Coast:

 • Positano Beach
 • Villa Cimbrone
 • Sunset at Ravello
 • Fiordo di Furore
 • Emerald Grotto
 • Explore Sorrento
 • Day Trip to Pompeii

Spend the night on the Amalfi Coast .

Italy Itinerary

Day 4: Florence

Now, it’s time to visit the City of the Renaissance! Florence is the capital of Tuscany and a must for history lovers and culture vultures.

Take the train to Florence from the Amalfi Coast via Naples in the morning and arrive by early afternoon. Here are some of the best things you can do on your free afternoon in Naples:

 • Climb the Dome of Florence’s Duomo
 • Baptistry of St. John at the Duomo
 • Walk Across Ponte Vecchio
 • Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia Gallery
 • Uffizi Gallery
 • Piazzale Michelangelo for views
 • Basilica of Santa Croce
 • Boboli Gardens
 • Gelateria Santa Trinita
 • Piazza della Signoria

Spend the night in Florence.

10 Day Italy Itinerary

Day 5: Florence and Pisa

On your final morning in Florence, you may want to check out some of the top attractions you didn’t get around to visiting the day before.

Accademia Gallery, for example, usually opens at 8:15 am. This is a great time to see the Statue of David as it’s usually packed out!

The train from Florence to Pisa takes less than an hour and it’s en route to the colorful, coastal Cinque Terre villages so it’s the perfect stopover. Spend a few hours here taking Instagrammable photos of the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Cathedral before hopping back on the train to head north.

Ideal towns to stay in on Cinque Terre for this itinerary are Monterosso al Mare or the nearby city of Levanto.

Things to do in Cinque Terre

Day 6: Cinque Terre

Start off your full day in Cinque Terre in the picturesque village of Monterosso al Mare. This is the northernmost town of the five lands that make up Cinque Terre. The other four, from north to south, are Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

There are three ways you can explore Cinque Terre:

 • By train – Purchase a Cinque Terre rail pass at any station to visit all five villages
 • By ferry – Head to the dock for a day pass but note they don’t stop at Corniglia
 • By foot – The Blue Trail connects all five villages but parts are often closed for maintenance

Exploring by train is the quickest and most efficient way to see all five villages. Enjoy the epic viewpoints, gelato, seafood, and watching the sunset from any of the Cinque Terre towns.

10 Day Italy Itinerary

Day 7: Milan and Lake Como

Wake up bright and early to take the train from Cinque Terre. Plan to arrive in Milan early afternoon for a short stopover.

Here are some things you can see in Milan during your afternoon there:

 • Milan’s Duomo Rooftop
 • The Last Supper Painting by Da Vinci
 • Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

Head to the town of Bellagio on the banks of Lake Como where you’ll spend the night. You can take a train to Como and then a bus, but you might prefer to hire a driver for convenience.

Italy Itinerary

Day 8: Lake Como

There’s only one way to spend your free day in Lake Como : sailing on the lake and exploring charming lakeside villages!

You have three sailing options:

 • Catch a round-trip ferry
 • Book a private boat tour
 • Rent a boat

Spend the day stopping off at as many beautiful villages as you can and seeing incredible villas. Here is some inspiration:

 • Town of Varenna
 • Town of Menaggio
 • Villa Balbianello in Lenno
 • Villa Melzi in Bellagio
 • Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo

Spend a second night in Bellagio.

Day 9: Venice

It’s time to explore the romantic, floating city of Venice! Book a driver for your return trip to Milan and take the train to Venice.

The first thing you should do is take a gondola ride along the Grand Canal and down the waterways that run beside Venice’s narrow streets. You’ll be able to see lots of churches, city squares, and bridges from the viewpoint that Venice is meant to be seen.

Spend your free evening eating cicchetti (Venitian tapas) and if you’re in the mood for after-dinner drinks, head to Harry’s Bar where Hemingway once frequented.

greece italy switzerland tour

Day 10: Venice

After breakfast, spend your last day in Italy seeing as many of Venice’s top sights as you can. Be an early bird to avoid the cruise ship crowds! Here are some suggestions:

 • St. Mark’s Square and Basilica
 • Doge’s Palace
 • Rialto Bridge and Market
 • Peggy Guggenheim Collection
 • St Mark’s Campanile
 • Bridge of Sighs
 • Libreria Acqua Alta
 • Islands of Murano, Burano, and Torcello

Depending on your travel plans, either fly out to Athens tonight or enjoy your last night in Venice.

After spending over a week on a sightseeing tour of Italy doing what the Romans do, it’s time to explore the island nation of Greece. This 10-day itinerary offers heaped helpings of ancient history with a side dish of wonderful beaches and glistening turquoise waters on the Greek Islands.

You’ll visit the ancient city of Athens on mainland Greece before venturing on an island-hopping Greece tour of Crete and two islands in the Cyclades, Santorini and Naxos.

greece italy switzerland tour

Day 11: Arrive in Athens

Welcome to Greece and its capital city, Athens! Note that Greece is one hour ahead of Italy.

Depending on what time to arrive, you may be able to start exploring Ancient Athens today. Look at the list of things to do on tomorrow’s date as there are endless things to do here to fill your time.

When you get back, check out the Minoan Ruins of Chania and the Church of Agios Nikolaos before enjoying a relaxing evening.

Who’s ready for a mini road trip?! Rent a car or book a driver and head to Eastern Crete making some stops along the way:

 • Stop 1 – Fortezza in Rethymno
 • Stop 2 – Rimondi Fountain
 • Stop 3 – Neratze Mosque
 • Stop 4 – Archaeological Museum of Rethymnon
 • Stop 5 – Porta Guora

Stay near the towns of Malia or Elounda.

Day 16: Spinalonga or Heraklion

You have a free day to do whatever you please! Hang out at your resort, book a day trip with a tour director who is a local specialist in Crete, or explore independently with a rental car. Here are some great choices of what to do with your day:

Spend your first day relaxing on one of the wonderful beaches on this island before enjoying a sunset boat ride. You’ll get the best view of the Oia windmills!

 • Monastery of Profitis Ilias

If you drink wine, compare a Greek wine tasting with glasses you enjoyed in Italy. After a few sips, you’ll not be able to say which you prefer.

greece italy switzerland tour

Day 19: Naxos

Take the two to four-hour ferry from Santorini to your final island in Greece, Naxos. Because it’s a long boat ride and you probably won’t arrive until lunch, spend your afternoon relaxing on one of the best beaches in Naxos:

It's no wonder so many of us want to travel to Europe. It has the key to our roots, so much history, wine tasting, and landscapes to take your breath away.

Visit Switzerland

With our partner Eurobound , you are able to customize your itinerary to Switzerland to an infinite degree. They have provided a couple of sample itineraries that we have featured on our blog for Zermatt and Lugano , but the sky is the limit.

If you'd rather go on an escorted tour, our partner Globus has many departing dates.

Visit Greece

Greece: Athens, Santorini, Thessoliniki -- it's where the old world meets the new. We have our own personalized recommendations for your visit to Athens , too.

As our friend Miroslav described his last trip, "Thessaloniki is a place where the past meets the future. This unique place has many historical sites from the Byzantine period. The Ionian Islands have great vineyards and olive groves. Beaches are great, the sea is fantastic, and nights clear and the stars are bright."

Don't stop there. Even though Mykanos and Santorini are the most popular islands, Crete is open 365 days a year and offers nightlife, hiking, beaches, forests, and more! Our partner Travelive can create a custom itinerary just for you. Since their offices are located in Athens, there is no reason why you shouldn't visit today.

"Whether you are looking for airfare, a no-frills family vacation package or an exclusively designed get-away, look no further Trip Designs got you covered. After having reaped the benefits, (or more literally savings!) of Milica’s expertise when it came to purchasing airline tickets to Europe, she organized a wonderful get-away to Tulum for me and my friend. From flights, to airport transfers to hotel accommodation, Milica arranged everything to our fullest satisfaction and it made for a hassle-free vacation where all we had to do was lounge on the beach, sip cocktails and figure out which activity we would enjoy doing that day." How to do Italy AND Greece for a Vacation or Honeymoon

Are you having trouble deciding between Greece and Italy for your honeymoon? Why not do both?! If you have a solid two weeks to spare, this romantic, dreamy country combination will exceed all of your honeymoon expectations.

Both Greece and Italy have so much to offer, and normally, I would say to be careful not to try to fit too much into your honeymoon itinerary. But if you have the time and are the type of couple who doesn’t mind staying busy, then you may as well kill two birds with one stone! This is especially the case if you have never been to Europe or think that it might be a while until you get the chance to go back.

What’s the Best Itinerary for Italy and Greece for a Honeymoon?

Two itineraries for you to choose from: .

Below, I’ll walk you guys through two two-week itineraries encompassing both Greece and Italy. This is how I would plan the trip if it were me, but if you have more than two weeks, feel free to click around my Europe content and add in some more destinations! And if you’re not sure which countries to add in, just pick one of these dreamy luxury hotels and take it from there.

When it comes down to it, the itinerary that is right for you will depend how much beach time you and your new spouse are looking for. You could go to Rome and Tuscany for urban explorations, rich history, culture, and some wine tasting under the Tuscan sun. But if you’re a beach addict like me, you would be happy bee-lining it to the iconic Amalfi Coast . Either option would be immediately followed by the best of the best island hopping in Greece ! You really can’t go wrong either way!

When to go to Greece and Italy

For both of these itineraries, the ideal travel months are May through September. If you’re planning a honeymoon outside these dates, the beaches will not be warm enough to enjoy!

Itinerary 1: Tuscany, Rome, and Greece

Outline: 7 days in italy, 7 days in greece, florence: 3 days, tuscany: 2 days, rome : 2 days, santorini: 4 days, mykonos or paros: 3 days, day 1: fly into florence.

There are a few different flight patterns that you could choose from. You could choose to purchase a roundtrip ticket to Florence, but I personally think that it makes more sense to get a one-way ticket to Florence and fly home from Athens. Another option would be to fly into Rome (this is sometimes cheaper) and then take a train to Tuscany, but this takes longer.

Once you’ve arrived in Florence, get settled at your hotel or Airbnb. I love Hotel Savoy and the Westin Excelsior Florence both for their luxurious features and central locations.

Days 2 – 3: Florence

Florence is one of my favorite Italian cities. This is where the Renaissance began and where many of the best artists/thinkers of all time lived and worked. The architecture is incredible, the scenery captivating, and the museums are world-renowned! I suggest touring the Duomo, visiting the Uffizi Gallery and Galileo Museum, seeing the Statue of David, as well as walking the Ponte Vecchio bridge.

Florence is also known for its incredible vintage shops… ladies, do I have your attention now?? One of the best parts about Florence is the hole-in-the-wall cafes along the cobblestone streets that serve up fresh paninis, pasta, pizza, and of course… all you can eat gelato! If you’re not too beat after tourist-ing all day, hike your way up to the Piazza Michelangelo for the best view of the sunset over the city!

Days 4 – 5: Tuscany

greece italy switzerland tour

Continue the romance as you escape to the countryside of Tuscany. Florence is technically already within the region of Tuscany, so you don’t have to travel too far to find the idyllic charm people speak of. You could choose to do a day trip on your own by renting a car or taking a 40-minute train ride from Florence to the town of Siena. Another option is a guided full or half day (wine) tour from Florence. Maybe even do a private Chianti tour and tasting.

If you’re more partial to the calm and quiet of the rolling hills and small villages, choose to spend a night or two here! For a full-on honeymoon-worthy luxury experience, opt for a night at either the Castello Di Casole , a former 10th century estate turned Belmond Hotel, or the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco . These are arguably the best hotels in Tuscany, period.

greece italy switzerland tour

Castello di Casole

On your last day in Tuscany, take the train to Rome. Even the smaller Tuscan towns have train stations, or you can take a high-speed train from Florence that will only take 1.5 hours (and will only run you about $18).

Days 6 – 7: Rome

ancient Rome | History, Government, Religion, Maps, & Facts | Britannica

It won’t take you long to get your bearings in Rome . By the second time I visited the city, I felt like I knew it backwards and forwards. With so many iconic landmarks, it’s hard to get lost, so have fun exploring the city and walking everywhere (plus, this allows you to find all the mom-and-pop Roman pizza spots!).

Spend a day exploring Vatican City (the smallest country in the world!) and its dazzling St. Peter’s Basilica and Sistine Chapel, where you can find Michelangelo’s masterpiece. Other things you simply cannot miss while in Rome include The Colosseum (a no-brainer), The Trevi Fountain (but get there early), the Roman Forum, and the Piazza di Spagna (the Spanish Steps).

Day 8: Fly from Rome to Santorini

Days 9 – 11: santorini.

12 Best Things To Do In Santorini, Greece - Hand Luggage Only - Travel, Food & Photography Blog

Between the beaches, wineries, hot springs, shopping, and some of the world’s most photographed sunsets, there are a surprising amount of things to do in Santorini.

You guys already know that beaches and wine are always at the top of my “to do” list. My perfect day would be a half day wine tour with a Sommilier followed by lounging on a picturesque beach till sunset. For more details, check out my How to Spend 3 Days in Santorini article!

Stay at the Mystique Santorini , just five minutes (walking!) from downtown Oia, or Grace Hotel Santorini for a little more seclusion.

Days 12 – 14: Mykonos or Paros

Top 8 Mykonos Instagram Spots You Can't Miss - Dana Berez

If you’re the type of couple who enjoys lavish cave hotels and DJ’s on the beach, Mykonos was made for you. If you’d prefer a much more laid-back vibe, but still a great vibe, Paros is a nice balance!

Things to do in Paros Island, Greece | Travel Passionate

Itinerary 2: Amalfi Coast and Greece

Amalfi: 3 days, ravello: 2 days, capri: 2 days, santorini: 4 days, mykonos or paros: 3 days, day 1: fly into naples .

You can either get a one-way ticket to Naples and fly home from Athens, or get a round trip ticket and buy a short flight from Athens back to Naples. Once you land, head for the coast!

The best way to reach the Amalfi Coast from the airport is by private car (around 100-150 euros total), but the cheapest is by bus (about 10 euros each person). I personally love splurging on a private driver in instances like this, because after a long flight to Europe from the states with all of my bags, the last thing I want to do is navigate bus schedules and find my way around a foreign place.

Days 2 – 4: Amalfi

I love the Amalfi area of the Amalfi Coast mainly because of Hotel Santa Caterina . I highly recommend going to Amalfi and staying in this resort!! It is so beautiful and captures the quintessential Amalfi Coast charm. Not to mention, their seaside pool and beach club is the perfect place to soak in the Mediterranean sunshine! With its five-star service and food, exclusivity, and beautiful setting in Amalfi, Santa Caterina makes the most perfect honeymoon resort on the Amalfi Coast. For more details on where to eat and what to do, check out my Ultimate Guide to The Amalfi Coast!

From Amalfi, you can do an optional day trip to Positano if you have the time!

greece italy switzerland tour

Days 5 – 6: Ravello

Ah, Ravello. This magical, romantic, quiet gem of the Amalfi Coast is tucked 1,000 feet up into the cliffsides, with some of the most stunning views of anywhere I’ve seen in the world. It’s a bit less busy than the Positano area, which is a plus if you’re looking to skip the crowds and opt for a more secluded experience. The hotels here aren’t cheap during high season, but they are worth it (there are only a few, and each one is absolutely incredible! I recommend Villa Fraulo and Belmond Caruso . ).

greece italy switzerland tour

Days 7 – 8: Capri

greece italy switzerland tour

If you’re looking for the most beautiful island in Italy, look no further than Capri . You’ll spend your days hiking and strolling around, breaking only for gelato, and soaking in the beautiful views at every turn. My favorite beach club in Capri is the celeb-favorite La Fontelina, and my favorite hiking path is Via Krupp, which takes you all the way from the top of the island down to the beach (so bring your swimsuit).

When it comes to where to stay, Punta Tragara is a MUST. Located at the top of the steps leading down to the Faraglioni rock stacks and Fontelina/Da Luigi beach bars, Punta Tragara is a chic, contemporary luxury hotel built right into the cliffs of Capri. Its beautiful pink architecture exudes romance and is perfect for couples honeymooning in Capri .
