From the Expo 2020 Dubai to the upcoming Dubai Shopping Festival, there are several things to do in the UAE. If you are planning to visit the UAE anytime soon and are unfamiliar with the visa requirements in the UAE and the processes that you need to follow, here is our detailed guide on all the visa options available to visitors if they wish to visit the UAE.

Do I need a visa to enter Dubai?

Whether you need a visa or not is dependent on your country of citizenship. While citizens of some countries have the option for a visa on arrival, you may need to apply for a visa before you enter the UAE in some other situations.

What is the validity period of my visa?

All visas are valid for 60 days from the date of issue until entry to the UAE, except the 48-hour and 96-hour Transit Visa, which is valid for 30 days.

What should I check before travelling to Dubai?

You would need to ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months at the time of entry. You may also require a prearranged visa depending on your nationality.

Can I get a visa on arrival?

Citizens of more than 50 countries do not require a pre-arranged visa to enter Dubai. As per the website of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, citizens of GCC countries and citizens of the following countries can get a visa on arrival:

1. Australia

5. Bulgaria

10. Czech Republic

11. Denmark

12. Estonia

13. Finland

15. Germany

17. Hong Kong

18. Hungary

19. Iceland

20. Ireland

24. Liechtenstein

25. Lithuania

26. Luxembourg

27. Malaysia

30. Netherlands

31. New Zealand

34. Portugal

36. Romania

37. San Marino

38. Singapore

39. Slovakia

40. Slovenia

41. South Korea

44. Switzerland

45. The Vatican

46. United Kingdom

47. United States of America

Indian citizens

Some Indian citizens may also be eligible for a visa on arrival. These include Indian citizens holding a normal passport and either:

• a visit visa issued by the USA or

• a green card issued by the USA or

• a residence visa issued by the UK or

• a residence visa issued by the EU

In such cases, you can obtain a visa on arrival for a maximum stay of 14 days, provided that the visa or the green card is valid for at least six months from the date of arrival into the UAE.

If you are not eligible for a visa on arrival, here are all the other visa options you can avail of:

1. Tourist visa – 30-day or 90-day

Tourist visas can be obtained by tourists from around the world. Depending on your plan, tourist visas to the UAE can be issued for 30-days or 90-day durations, and allow single entry or multiple entries.

Who can apply for your tourist visa?

1. Airlines

Each airline has some conditions, which must be met in order for your visa to be arranged by them. One of the conditions is flying with them. When booking your ticket, you can also enquire about applying for a visit visa.

2. Tourist visas through agencies and hotels

Licensed travel agents and hotels in the UAE can arrange a tourist visa for you, provided you purchase the ticket through them and maintain a hotel reservation with the specific hotel.

You can also contact travel agencies in your country for any tourist packages available to the UAE in collaboration with a local tour operator.

3. Through UAE-based family and friends

As per the VisitDubai website, UAE residents (friends or relatives) can apply on your behalf subject to guidelines.

How can I extend the visa?

While the first time you apply for a visit visa you may not be inside the UAE, when extending the visa for another period of 30 or 90 days, you would need to apply for an ‘inside country visa change’, according to Sirajudeen Ummer, a Public Relations Officer with Dubai-based First Gate Business Services.

“The visa can be extended by providing the necessary documents and making the fee payment,” he said.

Documents required for processing inside the country visa change

• Passport copy (which should be valid for at least six months)

• Passport size photograph

• Old visa tourist/cancelled visa copy

• On arrival nationalities would only require Passport copy and photograph if they have entered UAE using on-arrival facility.

• If the visa was applied for by a relative or friend, they may need to submit a copy of their residence visa page and UID number.

Visas can cost approximately Dh320 for a one-month visa and Dh720 for a three month visa. However, as per Ummer, the cost may vary slightly based on the travel agency’s service charges.

You can apply for the second renewal before the expiry of the first one against Dh600 each time of renewal.

2. Transit visa – for 48 to 96 hours

This type of a visa, which is available for all passport holders, from 48 to 96 hours, is ideal for a short stopover in the UAE.

The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) Dubai took to its social media channels recently to inform passengers of how they can apply for a 96-hour transit visa – or an entry permit – when they arrive in the UAE.

Service requirements

To be able to get a transit visa issued at the immigration counter, you would need to present the following:

• Original passport

• An airline ticket showing the continuation of your journey, where the connecting flight should not be less than eight hours after you land in the UAE and not exceeding 96 hours and the destination of arrival and departure are not similar.

• Present a valid hotel reservation in UAE.

Service procedures

To apply for a transit visa, follow these steps:

• Visiting the airline company.

• Submit a request to issue a 96-hour entry permit with the airline’s service officer.

• If the request is approved, you will receive an approval of the request.

• Approach the passport officer at the immigration counter and complete the procedure.

Who needs a transit visa?

As per the UAE government’s official website – u.ae – if you are not one of the nationalities that are eligible for visa on arrival or a visa-free entry to the UAE, then you need a transit visa.

Who can apply for your transit visa?

UAE based-airlines you are travelling with can arrange your transit visa prior to your journey. If your trip is through a travel agency, the agency can also help you get the visa, but all visas are routed through the airline.

"The Transit Visa is a non-extendable single entry visa, valid for 30 days from the date of issue and the duration of stay is up to 96 hours (four days) from the time of entry. Transit passengers stopping at Dubai International Airport for a minimum of eight hours are eligible for a 96-hour Transit Visa," Shafiq Muhammad, Public Relations Officer with Muhaisnah Documents Clearing Services in Dubai told Gulf News.

"Such a visa is preferred by passengers having business meetings or taking a stopover en route to their next destination," he added.

3. Long-term, multiple entry tourist visa for five years

In case you are looking to visit the UAE regularly over the next few years, a new visa option has opened up for tourists. The Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA) has provided details of the five-year multiple entry tourist visa for all nationalities through the authority’s website.

Is a UAE-based sponsor required for the visa?

According to the details provided when the visa was announced, the visa does not require a UAE-based individual or organisation to sponsor the visa. Tourists can apply for the visa on self-sponsorship.

What is the maximum duration of stay on the visa?

As per the announcement, a tourist can stay for 90 days on each visit. This can be extended for another 90 days.

Up until now, tourists could only get visas for 30-day or 90-day durations.

How to apply for the five-year tourist visa

Step 1: Log on to the ICA website – www.ica.gov.ae

Step 2: Select ‘E-channel Services’ from the main module on the website.

Step 3: Select ‘Public services’.

Step 4: Select the service ‘Visa – multi-trip / tourist long-term (5 years) for all nationalities / visa issuance’

Step 5: Fill in the application form with your personal details as well as your passport details.

Step 6: Attach the following documents:

• Coloured photograph

• Passport Copy

• Medical Insurance copy

• Bank statement for the last six months with a balance of at least $4,000 or its equivalent in foreign currencies in the last six months.

Step 7: Review your application.

Step 8: Make the payment for the fees. The application fee is Dh650.

Note: It is also important to check the PCR test and vaccination requirements before you book a ticket, after you have received a visa to travel to the UAE.

  • The applicant possesses a handwritten passport, typical for inhabitants of Pakistan and Bangladesh.
  • If the applicant has a history of criminal activity, it has been established that they committed fraud or have been accused of engaging in inappropriate behavior in the United Arab Emirates.
  • If the application form contains any significant cases of a typographical error
  • The photograph sent in does not adhere to the requirements mentioned in the specification.

Compared with other Visas, prices guide

You can get other types of UAE visas, not only the 3 months Dubai visa, but also 30 days Dubai visa. Below is a list of the UAE visa's single and multiple entries and prices.

The multiple-entry visas for the United Arab Emirates are sometimes confusing. They begin counting from the day you enter the country and allow you to enter it several times within the next 30 or 90 days.

cost of dubai visit visa

The 3 months Dubai visa allows one to Stay in UAE for around 90 days. After 90 days, you are given 10 days, a grace period, to figure out how to extend your stay. After the 10 days you have not legalized your stay in UAE, you will be fined for overstaying.

The overstay fee that applies to visitors who continue to stay in the UAE after the expiration of their visit visa is distinct from the overstay fine that applies to residents who remain in the country after their visa has expired.

The fines levied against persons who fall into this group are far higher than those set against residents. This type of visa holder also receives a grace period when they apply.

Nevertheless, this privilege is highly restricted, as it only lasts for ten days and only applies to posts made during this time; daily fees are imposed. During this period, the visiting visa can be renewed or converted into a resident visa if the applicant chooses. The following are the fines one can get for overstaying in UAE;

  • On the first day of overstay, AED 200
  • Each consecutive day AED100
  • Service fees are AED 100

The price for 3 months Dubai visit visa for UAE from India is around 15,000-16500 INR.

Yes, you can get 6 months UAE visit visa, but few options are available.

Dubai: $10k bank balance, N640k fee visa application requirements not from us – UAE

The United Arab Emirates, UAE, has denied it exempted Nigerians from the customary visa application process.

TheCable exclusively reports that it contacted the UAE’s department of economy and tourism to confirm if obtaining a DVN was part of the resolutions reached between the Nigerian government and the UAE authorities before the suspension of the visa ban on Nigerian passport holders.

According to the report, the department said the DV hub website is not affiliated with the UAE government.

This comes after it emerged that Nigerian passport holders intending to visit UAE are now mandated to first obtain a Document Verification Number, DVN, before applying for visa.

Recall that it was announced on Monday that the UAE has lifted a three-year travel ban on Nigeria.

Following the announcement, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said that the resolution had conditions that were “mutually beneficial”.

Part of the conditions include obtaining a document verification number (DVN).

According to the DV hub, the process is a specialised service designed to authenticate and verify documentation essential for visa applications to the UAE.

The DVN costs a non-refundable N640,000 excluding VAT for each application. This does not include the visa fee.

In addition to obtaining a UAE visa, Nigerians are mandated to provide proof of a six-month bank statement with a minimum balance of $10,000.

Some Nigerians have frowned at the conditions, saying it is a ‘constructive ban’, while others expressed doubt about the authenticity of the DVN.

However, upon enquiry by TheCable, the UAE’s department of economy and tourism said the DV hub website is not affiliated with the UAE government.

When asked if Nigerians are required to make payments for documents’ verification, it referred the media outlet to Dubai’s general directorate of residency and foreigners’ affairs (GDRFAD).

The GDRFAD said, while explaining the process for a visa application: “You will need a personal photo and a copy of your passport which must not have less than six months validity.

“A tourist visa costs about 200-300 dirhams (N60,000 – 90,000) depending on the stay.

“You will also need a travel ticket and valid medical insurance within the UAE.”

Also, on the issue of the need to have a bank balance of $10,000, the directorate said: “We are not aware of such requirements. Make your visa applications through the GDRFAD.”

Meanwhile, spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Eche Abu-Obe, told TheCable that clarification on the DVN would be sought and provided from the Ministry’s office in the Middle East.

Breaking news, two-year-old faces deportation because of illness, family ‘torn apart’ over $1.2m bill.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

A furious mother whose son is facing deportation from Australia because he has a chronic illness has shared fears her family will be “torn apart”.

British-born Laura Currie and her Italian partner Dante Vendittelli have built a life together in Perth after meeting in Brisbane five years ago.

The pair welcomed their son Luca in November 2021, as the couple were midway through their permanent residency application.

However, just six weeks after little Luca’s arrival, the parents discovered their firstborn had cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease affecting the lungs and digestive system.

Despite the fact Luca, now two-and-a-half years old, is a “very happy” boy who takes his illness in his stride, the family’s lives have been turned upside down after the government decided the potential cost of his treatment is too much for taxpayers, and declined Luca’s visa application.

Ms Currie, a child educator from Scotland, said the family love their life here and are desperately appealing the decision, describing the move as “heartbreaking”.

“We’re angry now, at the start I just cried and cried and cried as I kept visualising what life would be like if we have to leave,” she told news.com.au.

“But the thing is, if they do deport us, they are sending us to two different countries, so they’re splitting our family up.

“Dante can’t go to Scotland and Luca and I can’t go to Italy. So they’re literally tearing us apart. It’s so upsetting to think about.”

The worried mum, 33, said the family is now “living in limbo” after spending their savings – money they’d hoped to use to buy their first home – on an immigration lawyer who has lodged an appeal.

The couple moved to Australia separately, initially entering the country on different visas before Ms Currie became a defacto on Mr Vendittelli’s working visa, obtained through his employment as a construction worker.

While pregnant with Luca, the couple lodged a joint residency application, unaware that their baby would be born with a chronic health condition.

“We’d never even heard of cystic fibrosis before Luca was diagnosed,” the mum explained.

“Even though it is genetic, no one in either of our families as far back as we can trace, has ever had the condition.

“We’d actually paid for a non-invasive prenatal test that checks for any abnormalities while pregnant and it came back all clear.

“But unfortunately it doesn’t test for genetics. So Luca’s diagnosis was a huge shock.”

It was a routine heel test performed on newborns, usually between 48 and 72 hours after a baby is born, that led to Luca’s health discovery.

“To find out your baby has a chronic, and life-limiting disease, was a massive blow,” Ms Currie continued.

“But as if the journey of learning about cystic fibrosis, and what that means in terms of day-to-day life for Luca, wasn’t hard enough – we were then slapped with the possibility that we could lose our right to live in Australia.”

Ms Currie said it took two years for the family to hear back regarding their visa status, after Luca had a health check at aged six-months-old, and another a year later.

“We got an email in February Luca’s visa had been rejected, after we’d sent documents in regards to why we believe it shouldn’t be, including letters from his health care team and even Cystic Fibrosis WA who I fundraise for ever year,” she said.

“But the issue comes down to the cost of a medication called Trikafta, which Luca doesn’t take yet, and we’re not even sure if he is compatible with it.”

Trikafta has been billed as a “lifesaving treatment” for those living with the lung condition, that according to the TGA, is “indicated for the treatment of cystic fibrosis in patients aged 6 years and older”.

The treatment is on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, bringing its price down to $42.50 per script, but without the discount, it soars to $250,000 a year.

Based on this, the official estimate for Luca’s medical bill is $1.82 million over 10 years, the  BBC  reported, money the government is not prepared to pay despite the toddler being born here.

Ms Currie said: “It’s heartbreaking, there’s a lot of emotions and anger, it’s not even about us really, it’s about a two-and-a-half year-old-boy who didn’t ask for any of this. How can anyone do this to a defenceless child?”

A worried mother, Laura Currie, with her two-year-old son, Luca, who is facing potential deportation from Australia due to a chronic illness diagnosis.

She continued by stating the family feels “let down, unwanted and unwelcome” by the country they have called home for eight years.

“We’ve paid into the economy, we’ve paid our taxes, and we just feel like we’re not wanted here, which is a horrible feeling for anyone to go through,” she said.

“At the supermarket I’ll see somebody looking, and I know they’re staring because they’ve seen us on the news, and it makes you think the worst.

“Our back is up against a wall, which is why we’ve gone public, but it’s not been easy. Luca is known locally now as the ‘sick little Perth boy’ and it just breaks my heart.

A distressed mother holding her two-year-old son, who is facing deportation due to his chronic illness, cystic fibrosis

The Department of Home Affairs said it could not comment on individual cases when contacted by news.com.au.

When determining whether an individual meets the visa health requirements, “health and community costs above $86,000 or more are regarded to be significant”, a Departmental spokesperson said.

This is defended by the government as a necessary way to curb government spending and protect citizens’ access to healthcare, a report by the  BBC  states.

It says these visas aren’t technically rejected, but neither are they granted. Some can apply for a waiver, although not all visas allow it. They could also appeal the decision but the process can be expensive and drawn out.

Campaigners argue it is discriminatory and doesn’t align with modern attitudes towards disability.

The number of rejected visa applications from the Emirates last year stood at 22.44 per cent — 25 per cent higher than the previous year, according to Schengen Visa Info, which says it has guided "more than 280 million individuals" since 2013.

Up until June 11, 2024, the cost of a Schengen visa application was nearly Dh320 (€80). Among expenses, there are also service fees that vary according to area. However, effective June 11 this year, the European Commission announced a global increase in the cost of Schengen visas (visa type C) by 12 per cent.
