Some Basics About Sylhet

Sylhet is one of the most developed cities in South Asian country  Bangladesh . Sylhet is well famous for exporting quality tea all over the world and is also known as the Land of Tea Gardens. This city is also well known as Second London because many locals well settled in London and they always contribute a lot to develop their city.

Sylhet still carries many spiritual values to all. It became Holy Land when famous Sufi Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) came here for the first time with 360 saints to spread Islam.

Though Bengali is the primary spoken language everywhere in Bangladesh in Sylhet, locals find comfort talking in their language (Sylheti Bengali). You can communicate in English too.

There are many standard hotels, and resorts from budget to luxury in Sylhet to stay. Many good restaurants are there to taste all types of cuisines. But Bengali cuisines are a must-try for all.

When To Visit Sylhet?

Sylhet is one of the best tourism hubs in Bangladesh. The weather in Sylhet is cool in almost all seasons what you’ll not find in other places in Bangladesh. But the monsoon is the best time to explore the OUTSTANDING natural beauty of Sylhet.

How To Visit Sylhet?

You can travel Sylhet from Dhaka by air, road, or rail. There are also many excellent public bus services from Dhaka to Sylhet. Sylhet is very close to the Indian border (Tamabil) and so you can even visit by road from India.

Sylhet Tour Guide To Explore Solo in 5 Days

I made a road trip by private car service from Dhaka to all tourist places in Sylhet and found it comfortable and safe. My primary focus of this tour was to explore the natural beauty of Sylhet.

In my whole Sylhet tour, I was guided by Alamgir Bhai (Driver). It’s a pleasure to mention him here because he nicely guided and helped me to know a lot about Sylhet. This is what I love about solo travel. You’ll meet new people on the road. Furthermore, will learn something new from them.

Moreover, my five days itinerary will help you to plan your tour in Sylhet either solo or a group.

Sylhet, Britannia Hotel, Shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal, Shrine of Hazrat Shah Paran, Keane Bridge, Ali Amjad Clock Tower, Panshi Restaurant

Get in Sylhet City For The First Time

It was a pleasant experience, with no traffic jams, beautiful roads while crossing many bridges on the way to Sylhet from Dhaka. It took just 5 hours to reach Sylhet city, and the distance is almost 250 km.

I stayed at Britannia Hotel in Amberkhana, just 5 minutes walking distance from the Shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal. This hotel is one of the best in the central city with all the standard facilities.

Touring Around Sylhet City

In the afternoon I started exploring Sylhet city. Two famous shrines are located in Sylhet. First I liked to visit the Shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal. I read and heard a lot about this shrine and the world-famous Sufi Hazrat Shah Jalal (R). I’ve liked seeing many Black Pigeons (Jalali Kobutor) inside the shrine. Next, I visited the Shrine of Hazrat Shah Paran.

One the way, spend some time to enjoy the beauty of Surma River from one bridge which known as New Bridge to all. I came to know in other seasons Surma river lost its charm and became dry. The remote view of the Keane Bridge from this bridge was beautiful too. You can even try here street foods while sitting under the sky. One plate Phuchka  or Fusca is just 60 Taka, much less than Dhaka (150 Taka per plate).

Sylhet is located on the bank of the Surma River. The historic and oldest Keane Bridge (established in 1936) is still there over this river. Beside the bridge, you’ll see another old landmark Ali Amjad Clock Tower which built-in 1895. In the evening, during the sunset hour, the whole place was looking fantastic.

I found too much crowd around, and many are spending time at the Surma River Cruise Restaurant, favorite to all.

Zindabazar in Jallarpar Road is the most busier place in Sylhet city. All popular hotels, restaurants, and markets are located here and are good for shopping at a reasonable price. I had dinner with yummy and spicy Bangladeshi food at Panshi Restaurant, the most famous in the city for providing quality food at a low price.

  • Must carry National Card (for Bangladeshi) and Passport (for foreigners) while booking any hotel to stay. It is a good practice to carry wherever you go, especially when you’re traveling solo.
  • Overall Sylhet is a welcoming city for all and safe for tourists to move around. Locals are quite helpful.
  • You’ll find various types of persons with lousy motives outside the area of any shrines. Be careful about pick-pocketers while visiting those destinations.
  • It is never recommended to stay outside until late at night while traveling solo. You got to be cautious when you’re in a new place. I always try to maintain this wherever I visit alone or even accompanied by anyone.
  • After dinner, you might like to try Sweet Paan by the Khasi tribe, available outside of Panshi Restaurant. Yeah, it is the tradition here and how can you forget to have one?

Panthumai, Piyain River, Bisnakandi, Jaintia Hill Resort

The real adventure started on the second day of my Sylhet tour. After breakfast from Britannia Hotel left to visit remote but beautiful destinations like Panthumai and Bisnakandi.

But before that enjoyed some moments while walking on the Keane Bridge, the gateway of Sylhet. It was also amazing to hear the bell of the Ali Amjad Clock Tower (Big Ben of Sylhet).

On The Way To Panthumai & Bisnakandi

I must say I enjoyed the beautiful and rural landscape during my long journey in Sylhet. The view of green trees, green paddy fields from both sides of roads will never let you feel tired. And what to say about the beautiful blue sky, though sometimes cloudy but I love every shade of sky.

Panthumai is located in Gowainghat, almost 83 km from Sylhet. The road condition is not good, but difficult roads often take us to an attractive destination, and I realized that very well this time.

Panthumai is a remote village. The main attraction here is the Borhill waterfall with the backdrop of the Meghalaya mountain ranges. Borhill waterfall belongs to India but from the zero point possible to enjoy the natural beauty of that fall which is a part of the Piyain River.

It’s so unusual at the zero point because you’re just close to the Indian border like your one foot is in Bangladesh and another in India. Boundary facts!! Hehehe.

Here I went for a boat ride on the Piyain river to get a closer view of the fall, but no one is allowed to get very close.

Panthumai

The next destination was Bisnakandi . To explore the beauty of Bisnakandi you must have to hire an engine boat; the distance is long, it took almost 1.30 hours. The best part of this destination is the beautiful Piyain River and the natural view. I loved the clear water, rolling stones, and Khasi hills views at Bisnakandi.

In the evening after returning from Bisnakandi, I left for Jaintia Hill Resort in Jaintiapur. I stayed two nights here. This resort is so close to the Indian border (Tamabil), and Jaflong is very near to this resort. But this resort does not have any standard room services or facilities (no phone, TV, wi-fi), according to the price range. Huh!

  • To save time and distances, you can enjoy the view of the waterfall in Panthumai by boat while visiting Bisnakandi. You can hire a boat directly for Bisnakandi to Panthumai.
  • You can visit all popular tourist destinations directly from Sylhet city. I wanted to save time, and all places are quite near Jaflong and so stayed at Jaintia Hill Resort.

Jaintia Hill Resort, Sari River, Lalakhal, Ratargul Swamp Forest, Jaflong, Jaflong Inn Hotel & Restaurant

In the early morning, I enjoyed the sunrise through the Jaintia hill from the Jaintia Hill Resort. The mountain view with two waterfalls is the best part of this resort. While walking at the resort ground, from the boundary saw the Last House of Bangladesh.

Sari River To Lalakhal

I found the aerial view of Jaintiapur is beautiful. On the way saw the most beautiful Sari River (Emerald green color water) which leads to Lalakhal . Sari River is just near the Indian border and originated from Meghalaya, India.

Jaintiapur to Lalakhal distance is just 8.3 km, and you’ve to hire a boat from the Sarighat. There is much to see in Lalakhal. Before exploring Lalakhal, I had local breakfast (Rice with Chickpea) from one local hotel at Sarighat. The food was tasty. This is called Local Travel Charms.  😉

Lalakhal

It was so refreshing to see the pristine and naturally emerald green color water while enjoying the boat ride in Lalakhal which followed to the Lalakhal Tea Garden.

And then visit one Areca Nut Garden on the mountain (almost 60 feet high), it was superb to see the top view of Lalakhal from here.

One of the memorable parts of my Sylhet tour will be visiting one local village in Lalakhal. I met one family where everyone was so loving.

They were poor but big-hearted. I stayed there just 10 to 15 minutes and within that time served fresh lemon juice, tea, and much more to eat. The hospitality from them will always remember because this is called Unconditional Love.

A Boat Ride To Ratargul Swamp Forest

Then explored the Dreamland, Ratargul Swamp Forest in Gowainghat. Ratargul Swamp Forest is one of the best freshwater swamp forests in the world. My most favorite destination in Sylhet is Ratargul Swamp Forest regarding extraordinary beauty and adventure. A boat ride in this forest will always be a memorable one. The boatman (Jaynal) was such a kind person. He amazed me with his priceless smile and right talks. If anything attracts me is simplicity. Every love from new people around me throughout my journey will always remember.

On The Way To  Jaflong

In the evening enjoyed the sunset moment at Jaflong, the popular hill station in Bangladesh while coming back from the Tamabil border. The Sylhet-Tamabil highway road condition is not ok. And Jaflong lost its old beauty. I was sad to see how people are collecting stones and consequently destroying the natural beauty of this destination! Alamgir Bhai was sharing his own experience, how beautiful was Jaflong even 5 to 6 years back.

I had dinner at Jaflong Inn Hotel & Restaurant, found this new restaurant quite standard and clean among other local restaurants in Jaflong.

  • You have to hire a boat for Lalakhal according to an hour basis.
  • You can enjoy a boat ride at Ratargul Swamp Forest as long as you want but you’ve to hire the whole boat. Best to take a traditional boat without an engine to enjoy the sound of nature.

Kanaighat, Lovachora, Madhabkunda Eco Park & Waterfall, Parjatan Restaurant, Britannia Hotel

The early morning started for Lovachora by road from Kanaighat. This destination is almost 55 km from the resort. I wanted to visit Lovachora Tea Garden, but couldn’t manage permission to enter the garden. But it was worthy to come till this long; otherwise, I might never be able to see a fascinating landscape beauty in Sylhet.

Then started for Moulvibazar to visit Madhabkunda Eco Park & Waterfall. This destination is almost 3 hours from Kanaighat. But I loved this journey. The landscape beauty in Sylhet is vibrant and so you’ll like to go for a long drive.

Madhabkunda is a popular destination in Bangladesh. Almost all tourists here come to visit Madhabkunda waterfall. This fall located inside the Eco Park, where you’ll see various trees, like a picnic spot. This is also one temple and Parjatan Restaurant.

I had lunch at Parjatan Restaurant, here the food was very tasty though pricey.

In the evening came back to Sylhet city, and enjoyed while Instagramming with free Wi-Fi from Britannia Hotel.  😉

  • You’ve to buy a ticket to visit Madhabkunda Eco Park & Waterfall.
  • In Sylhet, you can enjoy local shopping at Manipuri Bazar. Here many types of handicrafts and fabrics made by Manipuri Tribal, much famous in Bangladesh.

Sreemangal, Lawachara National Park

I was sad as it was my last day in Sylhet. Early morning I checked out of the Britannia Hotel. I wanted to eat Beef Shatkora (Famous Local Dish) and had that for the first time from Panch Bhai Restaurant, another favorite restaurant for Bengali food at a low price.

I was quite happy because for the second time went to visit Sreemangal, the Tea Capital of Bangladesh. In the whole of Bangladesh, the excessive rainfall zone is Sreemangal. Therefore the weather of this destination is always cold and one of the best tourist spots in the country.

Sreemangal To Lawachara

The whole Sreemangal is blessed with lush green tea gardens, tea estates, and tea plantations. In addition, the best thing is that here in tea gardens most workers (75%) are women.

I had explored a lot at Lawachara National Park with the help of Eusuf Ali. He is a very experienced and also cooperative Tour Guide and showed me many unique paths at Lawachara Rain Forest .

Mushrooms of Lawachara Rain Forest in Sylhet

I also visited one Khasi Tribal village, and it was interesting to know about their lifestyle.

While coming back, Eusuf took me to see one Lemon Garden and Hot Chili Pepper (Naga Morich) Garden inside the forest. Here from one stall, I loved to taste Seven Layers Tea, very famous in Sylhet.

  • Must take Guide to explore Lawachara National Park.
  • You have to buy a ticket to visit Lawachara National Park.
  • Must buy Fresh Tea from Sreemangal. Here you’ll get the quality one.

Back To Dhaka

I took my last lunch in Sylhet from Panshi Restaurant, Sreemangal. The fish curry with plain rice here was yummy. And then came back to Dhaka by night.

Points of Interest in Sylhet [At a Glance]

  • Outstanding natural beauty and rural landscape.
  • Lush green Tea Gardens in Sreemangal.
  • Boat ride on beautiful rivers.
  • A long drive on beautiful roads.
  • Adventure at Ratargul Swamp Forest and Lawachara Rain Forest.
  • Yummy Bengali and Sylheti Food at a reasonable price.
  • Tribal villages and their lifestyle.

Now you got many reasons to visit Sylhet. And lastly, Bangladesh is a very hospitable country. No matter where you go, you’ll be always amazed by the hospitality of almost everyone you meet on the road.

14 Best Things To Do In Sylhet Bangladesh

moon travel sylhet

Are you planning a trip to Bangladesh and looking to visit Sylhet? This is a complete guide with everything you need to know when looking for the coolest places to visit and things to do in Sylhet.

I never completed an article so quickly as this one. I was still in Bangladesh and my trip to Sylhet was just a couple days old, but I was still full of excitement and wanted to share my adventures with you. Traveling to Bangladesh is already off the beaten path but when you decide to visit Sylhet you are surely an avid world traveler.

If you are visiting Bangladesh you must definitely try to make time in your itinerary to travel to Sylhet in the Northeast of Bangladesh and with this list of cool things to do I hope to convince you.

1. Visit the Lala Khal Tea Gardens

lala khal tea gardens 2

One of the main places to visit in Sylhet are the tea plantations. There are many tea plantations around but the Lala Khal Tea gardens are the most beautiful ones to visit. To get here you will need to take a little boat trip across the river and once you walked pass the gate you can make your own way around the tea plantations.

lala khal tea gardens 1

Like all tourist attractions in Bangladesh the experience is real! There are no museums here or places where they make you taste their tea and try to sell you something. The main source of income is tea leaves and not tourism. Wander your way up to the top of the tea gardens and find hidden local villages in the hills.

These people will be waiting for you with a big smile and are happy to interact and have your pictures taken. Western tourists are a rarity. Simply another fantastic experience in Bangladesh!

2. Boat trip on the Sharee River

boat trip sylhet bangladesh 1

Bangladesh is almost completely flat and with so many rivers flowing through the country there are plenty opportunities to hop on a boat. When you travel to Sylhet this is one of the most relaxing things to do and a great way to see the countryside and life on the riverbank from a different perspective.

sylhet tourist attractions

In the Jaflong area you can witness the stone collecting business from the water, the main source of income in this region. On the Lala Khal side you will float on the river alongside tea plantations, river beaches and local life all the way up to the Indian border.

3. Camp on the riverbank

If you are up for an adventure when you travel to Sylhet then I have the perfect thing for you: stay overnight in a luxurious Tent Camp on the river bank. Due to the monsoon season this is only available from October to March in the area of Lala Khal. But sleeping on the beach under a million stars right on the river bank must be incredible! I have to plan a trip to Sylhet again to experience this myself.

4. Local cooking class

things to do in sylhet cooking class

In Lala Khal I also enjoyed a local cooking class organized by our hotel. Not a standard cooking class but one in a local home preparing dishes on a wood fire. We picked our own vegetables in the garden behind the house and helped the family preparing our meals. If you want to get in touch with locals this is a great way when you travel to Sylhet.

5. Local market in Jaintiapur

local market jaintiapur

For a real local experience make sure you don’t miss the local market in Jaintiapur, which is held every Wednesday and Saturday. This seriously is one of the best things to do in Sylhet as more authentic than this is it won’t get.

As a foreigner I was the main attraction here and literally people would stop and stare when I passed by. Simply out of curiosity as not many tourists make it here. See the live video for an impression of this tourist attraction in Sylhet only very few people know about.

Locals come here to buy vegetables, fruit, live animals, fish, get a haircut, drink tea and meet with friends all in one market. Incredible!

6. Visit the Khasi Tribe

A post shared by Travelblogger ???? Globetrotter (@tomtomtravel) on Jan 20, 2018 at 10:30pm PST

What about visiting an indigenous tribe ruled by women? Welcome to the Khasi tribe. The Christian Khasi population in Bangladesh resides on a tiny peninsula on the India border surrounded by the Goyain River. Visiting the local village is an incredible experience where you can get dressed up in the local attire and feel like a prince.

Keep on reading for one of my secret tips when you travel to Sylhet how to meet the Bangladeshi queen of the Khasi people, the ruler of the tribe!

Café Sengram Punji is a great place to drink a coffee while enjoying the view over the river and India on the other side.

7. Visit a workers camp at the Quarry

visit sylhet workers camp quarry

Bangladesh has many faces in there is no need to hide that poverty is also a side of this country. You will most definitely stumble upon some places were people live in extremely basic condition and I understand that this is not a Sylhet tourist attraction.

But if you want to meet the most friendly people ever and are in need of an eye-opener of how blessed you are in life then go visit the quarry on the riverbank in Jaflong. The people here live in tent camps next to the quarry. Walking around here felt like a Hollywood film set, almost unreal!

8. Step into India

things to do in sylhet 2

Sylhet is like a landlocked peninsula in Bangladesh surrounded by India and because of that there are a ton of border crossings all around. In and between the control posts there is 50 meters of nomandsland where you can have your picture taken with one foot in India and one foot in Bangladesh. A typical Western tourist attraction in Sylhet! Lol ;)

If you travel to Bangladesh as a foreigner it is cheaper to travel over land by the way. On Dhaka airport will you pay $51 dollar for your visa here at the border crossings in Sylhet only $8. :) I have some old blogs about India from the time I just started blogging, they are a funny read.

Two fishermen just before the border crossing on the river, the two green tents in the distance are the border partol huts from both countries.

9. Visit Local villages

Along your way there are a ton of local villages to explore. Be brave make your driver stop and wander around. There is no need to be scared or anything like that.

Local people love to see you coming. They will all stop what they are doing and they will stare at you. Not staring in a way that it is intimidating, but in a way that they look up to you.

There will hardly be anyone who will say no when you ask for a picture, but expect to get a ton of selfies taken with you too. :)

10. Try a 7 layer tea in Sylhet

7 layer tea sylhet

Apparently this is a typical thing to do in Sylhet so I could not resist either. Ask around in your hotel and someone will point you in the right direction where to find the famous local tea: 7 layer tea. It took about 15 minutes to make two cups of tea but it was waiting for. Ingredients: black tea, milk tea, ginger tea, lemongrass tea, sugar and two more, but I forgot about them.

11. Marvel at amazing sunsets

The flatlands and swamps all around Sylhet turn into a mystical landscape around sunset. The shadows of the trees become longer with each minute that passes and I am sure somewhere in the distance you will see a group of local kids playing football. A peaceful and serene setting and that is exatly what Sylhet in Bangladesh is.

12. Enjoy a jungle pool

jungle pool sylhet

On a hectic trip to Bangladesh I am sure you are going to be excited when you get a moment to relax. So therefore when visiting Sylhet I recommend you to find one of these jungle pools in some of the better hotels. They will allow admission for tourists even if you are not staying there.

These pools will give you that Bali vibe a little bit with endless jungle around you, sounds of the birds and lush green gardens. Especially in the summer months this is the best way to end your day sightseeing in Sylhet.

Scroll down to my where to stay in Sylhet section and I will tell you which hotels in Sylhet have these jungle pools.

13. Ratargul Swamp Forest

places to visit in sylhet 2

Last but not least one of the best things to do in Sylhet is a trip to the Ratargul Swamp Forest. The road to get here is bumpy but once you are floating on a little boat peddled forward by a friendly local you forget everything.

This extremely peaceful ride through the swamps is the ultimate place to find peace in this bustling country.

The beautiful mangroves are a protected area where you can find endemic species of wildlife like the pygmy-goose.

There are also hiking trails and a watch tower to climb up to. A 1 hour private boat ride in Ratargul Swamp Forest should not cost more than 1,000 BDT = $9 USD.

14. Meet the queen

visit sylhet khasi tribe queen

One of the best things to do in Sylhet is unfortunately not for everyone available. But if you are in the position and you have the right contacts you might be able to arrange a meeting with the queen of the Khasi tribe in Sylhet. I was among the lucky people to be invited at her house, sip tea and learn about the life of a royal. This experience made my trip to Sylhet extra special!

Where to stay in Sylhet

Nazimgarh wilderness.

things to do in sylhet 3

I would recommend staying close to the action and therefore take a look at the Wilderness Resort. This beautiful hotel is literally located in the tea plantations and an extremely peaceful place to rejuvenate. The rooms are clustered around the refreshing pool and the onside restaurant serves delicious food. The staff is extremely helpful and they can arrange all the above things to do in Sylhet.

sylhet tourism 1

The big advantage about Wilderness is that the tea plantations are within walking distance and so is the boat trip on the river. The hotel is located in an off the beaten path location a stone throw away from the Indian border.

Garden Resort

Closer to the mangrove forest you can find another great option to stay in Sylhet: the Garden Resort. This resort with a hilltop swimming pool, multiple restaurants and suites with their own Jacuzzis is only 15 minutes away from Sylhet city and the airport, but located in a lush green garden away from the hustle and bustle of Bangladeshi countryside life.

Some extra tips for traveling to Sylhet

Best local sim card for sylhet.

Wi-Fi signal in Sylhet is weak and not the fastest. As a foreigner I would recommend you to get a Grameen sim card. This mobile provider has good service up here, were Banglalink fails most of the times.

I wish someone had given me this tip before my trip to Sylhet. You can easily buy a Grameen sim card in Dhaka.

where to stay in sylhet

No WiFi, no phone reception so time to enjoy the view from Wilderness Resort Sylhet.

Prepare for bad road conditions

sylhet bangladesh 1

When you travel to Sylhet expect though road conditions. If you get carsick easily opt for a seat in the front and prepare to thrown around the car avoiding one pothole after another. They say it is not about the destination, but it is the journey that counts. Not in this case trust me! ;)

Bring mosquito spray

Make sure to bring mosquito spray when you visit Sylhet. Probably everywhere you go in Bangladesh have mosquito spray on you. It is only bad around sunset and just after, but it can save you a lot of bites. Or just wear long pants and sleeves! ;)

Try Betel Nut

Not a recommend activity when traveling to Sylhet! But since there are so many betel nut trees around and so many people are chewing betel nut, I also had to try it. It was my first time trying Betel Nut and I regret as soon as I put it in my mouth. Damn this stuff is bitter.

Where is Sylhet Bangladesh?

boat trip sylhet bangladesh

Sylhet is about 250 kilometers northeast of the capital Dhaka and the most northeastern division in Bangladesh. It is almost completely surrounded by India with border crossings in the north, east and south.

How to get to Sylhet

how to get to sylhet

There are several daily flights from Dhaka with US-Bangla and NovoAir. The domestic airport in Dhaka is not as crazy as the international airport although delays are common. The flight from Dhaka to Sylhet is only 30 minutes in a propeller plane, but traveling can take up to a couple hours because of the delays. There are also international routes serving Sylhet Bangladesh and you are able to find flights from London and Dubai.

Tourist busses with AC go on a regular basis from Dhaka to Sylhet and take about 6 hours. Price: between $8 - $13.

The most adventurous way to get to Sylhet is to take the train. Several trains a day go from Dhaka to Sylhet and back and are cheap. The train ride is beautiful!

Travel to Sylhet itinerary

places to see in sylhet itinerary map

This map shows you all the best places to visit in Sylhet and where to find them. When asking me how many days I would recommend to travel to Sylhet I would say about 3 to 4 days is enough. You can even do most of the things to do on this list in just 2 days, but it would be very rushed.

Already want to visit Sylhet?

I hope this article made you visit Sylhet soon. My trip was an absolutely amazing experience and coming to Bangladesh showed me once again that you can’t judge a country before you have been. According to a lot of people Bangladesh is not safe, but the fact that this is a crazy country, does not make it a dangerous country.

meeting locals in sylhet bangladesh

Life in Bangladesh is so different from out Western standards that we quickly judge for no reason. But as you have seen on the live video of the market in Jaintiapur there is no reason to be scared, people are just curious and above all they are the most friendly ever!

My trip to Bangladesh

Last week I have been asked a couple times why I did not travel to Bangladesh before and I actually had no answer. I have been to India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and all the countries around a bunch of times, but never stopped by in Bangladesh. I think just because very few people talked about it and it is not directly on the tourist trail.

Read more about my trip to Bangladesh in my complete blog post in the link.

It is may be not the best country for your first time backpacking alone , as it can be very intense. But on the other hand so amazing at the same time. I can now finally say I made it to this beautiful country and also got the chance to visit Sylhet.

Thank you Bangladesh for adding another amazing experience to my travel life!

Sylhet is the capital of Sylhet Division in Bangladesh .

Understand [ edit ]

Nestled in the picturesque Surma Valley amidst scenic tea plantations and lush green tropical forests, greater Sylhet is a prime tourist destination. Sylhet has developed due to remittances from the expatriates living in Britain. Laying between the Khasia and the Jaintia hills on the north, and the Tripura hills on the south, Sylhet breaks the monotony of the flatness of this land by a multitude of terraced tea gardens, rolling countryside and the exotic flora and fauna. Here the thick tropical forests abound with many species of wildlife, spread their aroma around the typical hearth and homes of the Mainpuri Tribal maidens famous for their dance.

The Sylhet valley is formed by a beautiful, winding pair of rivers named the Surma and the Kushiara both of which are fed by innumerable hill streams from the north and the south. The valley has good number of haors which are big natural depressions. During winter these haors are vast stretches of green land, but in the rainy season they turn into turbulent seas.

These haors provide a sanctuary to the millions of migratory birds who fly from Siberia across the Himalayas to avoid the severe cold there. Sylhet has also a very interesting and rich history, Before the conquest by the Muslims, it was ruled by local chieftains. In 1303, the great Saint Hazrat Shah Jalal came to Sylhet from Yemen with a band of 360 disciples to preach Islam and defeated the then Raja Gour Gobinda.

An interesting feature of Sylhet region is the aboriginal tribes such as the Tipperas, the Monipuris, Khasis and Garos who still live in their primitive ways in the hills, practising their age-old rites, rituals, customs and traditions. During festivals such as Rash Leela (Full-moon night in February) and Doljatra, the Monipuris perform their famous dance, based on allegorical love themes of their ancient mythology.

Sylhet’s Jaflong Travel Guide: Where Nature’s Beauty Blooms

Sylhet , Bangladesh is a region endowed with mesmerizing natural beauty. Lush green hills, expansive tea gardens, and meandering rivers create an irresistible canvas of diversity. This Jaflong travel guide is going to highlight the spellbinding charm of this traveler’s paradise.

Origin of the Name Jaflong

The name Jaflong is steeped in the history of the Khasi people. The term "Jaflong," with its connotation of a “haat (market) of pleasure”, finds its roots in the Khasi culture.

Geographical Location of Jaflong

Jaflong is nestled at the foothills of the Khasi-Jaintia Hills, approximately 62 km to the northeast of Sylhet. These majestic mountains serve as a natural border, separating Bangladesh from India along the Meghalaya border. The surrounding region falls within the Piyain River basin in Gowainghat upazila of Sylhet district. It's through Jaflong that the Dawki River enters Bangladesh from the hills located in India.

The period from June to October is the recommended period for the visit. During this time, the greenery of the mountains flourishes and becomes even more captivating, extending into November.

What to See on the Jaflong Trip

Standing knee-deep in the Piyain River and gazing upward at the verdant hills cloaked in clouds is a truly unparalleled experience. The suspension bridge is a relic from the British colonial era.

Additionally, the winding course of Dawki River, a Piyain River tributary, beckons tourists with its majestic allure.

Nestled in the picturesque Surma Valley amidst scenic tea plantations and lush green tropical forests, greater Sylhet is a prime attraction for all tourists visiting Bangladesh.

Sylhet has also a very interesting and rich hilstory, Before the conquest by the Muslims, it was ruled by local chieftains. In 1303, the great Saint Hazrat Shah Jalal came to Sylhet from Delhi with a band of 360 disciples to preach islam and defeated the then Raja Gour Gobinda.

When to see April’s full moon, the Pink Moon

We’re a week away from the Pink Moon making its annual appearance in the sky.

That nickname is the one given to the April full moon, which officially arrives over America in the evening on Tuesday, April 23, at 6:49 p.m. Eastern, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory , with peak illumination expected an hour later. But don’t fret about seeing the moon at that exact time, as it will appear full through that Wednesday night.

While the April full moon is most commonly known as the Pink Moon, that name has nothing to do with the color of the moon itself. This full moon has other nicknames, too, all of which originate from a variety of cultures.

This full moon also coincides with a lesser-known meteor shower, and patient, sharp-eyed observers may get to spot both lunar events in the same night.

Why Is The April Full Moon Called The Pink Moon?

The full moon names we use today originate from Native American, Colonial American and other sources, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac . Most full moon names relate to what’s happening in nature when they occur, and the Pink Moon is no exception.

April’s full moon was given its name by the Algonquin people because of the wildflowers that pop up during the month. The bright pink flowers of creeping phlox , a wildflower native to eastern North America, bloom every spring around the time the Pink Moon appears.

But Pink isn’t the only name April’s full moon goes by. The Old Farmer’s Almanac states that some Algonquins — whose massive territory covered much of today’s eastern Canada and America’s Eastern Seaboard — also called this full moon the Breaking Ice Moon, referring to when the ice begins to melt.

Similarly, the Dakotas, based in the central U.S. and Canada, called April’s full moon the Sprouting Grass Moon. It’s also called the Egg Moon, referring to the time of year when birds begin to lay their eggs, by the Cheyenne tribe of the Great Plains.

The April full moon has significance for various religious groups as well. In the Hebrew calendar, April’s full moon is the Passover moon. For Hindus, the full moon corresponds with the celebration of Hanuman Jayanti, a festival marking the birth of the deity Hanuman. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka commemorates this moon with a national Buddhist holiday called Bak Poya, celebrating a visit the Buddha made to that country.

When Are The Lyrid and Eta Aquariids Meteor Showers?

Your chances of spotting meteors shooting across the night sky begin to drop as the days get longer and the nights become shorter during the spring months — but that doesn’t mean your chances are zero.

In the next few weeks, the Lyrid meteor shower and the Eta Aquariids will excite sky-watchers.

The Lyrid meteor shower will peak beginning in the late evening on April 21 and last until dawn on April 22. This meteor shower typically only produces 10 to 15 meteors per hour, and it will be a struggle to see any meteors this year, according to EarthSky . A bright, nearly full moon will make it more difficult to spot any meteors flying across the night sky, but perceptive viewers should be able to spot a few while the Pink Moon shines.

A couple weeks after the Lyrids, the Eta Aquariids will offer a better chance of spotting more meteors, especially for anyone who lives in the southern half of the U.S. The peak for this meteor show will be before dawn on May 5 and 6. On those days, only a sliver of the moon will obstruct your view, and vigilant viewers should be able to see anywhere between 10 and 20 meteors per hour.

When you’re watching for meteors, remember to get far away from any city lights and arrive early to give your eyes time to adjust to the night sky.
