If you are a British or UK passport holder, you don't need a prior visa arrangement when traveling to Dubai. All required of you is to have the traveling documents, and the airport immigration office, when entering Dubai, will be issued 30 days on-arrival visa.

The 30 days arrival visa allows you to stay in Dubai for 30 days, but there you can get your visa extended by another 30 days. You don't have to exit the country and worry about how to extend the visa. You can let us Arabiers process everything for you.

If you plan to stay in Dubai long, you can change your visa, which is possible without exiting the country.

What are the Dubai Visa Requirements for British Citizens?

You have to meet the Dubai visa requirements for British citizens to be issued with the 30 days on arrival visa. The requirements include;

  • Original passport and should be at least 6 months from the UAE's expected departure time.
  • A confirmed return flight ticket or a flight ticket to another destination.

If you meet these requirements, which you will be prompted to present by the immigration authorities, you will be issued 30 days on-arrival visa.

Overstaying Fines

The 30 days on-arrival visa allows UK citizens to stay in Dubai for 30 days. There is a grace period of 10 days where you have to extend your visa by contacting a travel agency like Arabiers or exit the country.

After the 10 days grace period, you will be considered to have overstayed and thus pay fines. The fines are calculated as follows;

for the first day of overstaying

per day from the second day onwards.

How to Extend your on-arrival Dubai Visa:

After entering Dubai from the UK on the 30 days on arrival visa, you can extend your stay by any of the below options.

If your 30 days on arrival visa expired before renewing it, you have to exit the country and reenter to get a new visa.

Basically, you need to leave the country where you got the visa in the first place UAE so that you can continue to stay. A new 30-day on-arrival visa is issued every time the individual exits and enters the country.

There is no limit to the number of 30 days on-arrival visas issued per person annually. NOTE: Rejecting or issuing a visa is the sole discretion of the Dubai Immigration authorities.

You won't need to leave the country to get your visa extended for the UAE. The on-arrival visa is valid for thirty days and can be extended through immigration services for a fee of 1000 AED. You will receive an extension of 30 days, including a grace period of 10 days.

The other way to extend your stay in Dubai is through the in-country visa status change , but it is more expensive than the other two, which allows you to stay in UAE for more than 30 days.

You are not required to leave the country or go to any immigration office to obtain an inside-country visa. Rather, you are required to get in touch with a reputable travel agency like Arabiers to issue inside-country visas. As you relax on the beach during your vacation in Dubai, you will be issued a new tourist visa valid for either 30 or 90 days.

Alternately, you can change your visit visa into a residence visa or employment visa to extend your stay for longer.

If you are a UK national who has arrived in the country and have a visit visa that is set to expire in 30 days, you have the option to either extend your visa or convert it into a residence visa or an employment visa to obtain additional time to remain.

If you want someone else to file for your residence visa on your behalf, you will require a sponsor like your employer, a travel agency, spouse, or another individual.

It is essential to note that, in most instances, you will not be able to submit an application for your resident visa.

The employer will submit an application for a residence visa on your behalf to the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) of the emirate where you will be living.

The cost of extending your UAE visit visa may vary depending on the following:

Same Visa Extension

900 AED to 1000 AED (245 USD - 275 USD)

How to get a UK Tourist visa from UAE: Step-by-step guide

How to get a UK Tourist visa from UAE

Who would not be eager to explore the marvels of the United Kingdom and spend a vacation ravishing oneself with its magnificence? Who would hesitate to enrich themselves with the breathtaking greatness of Stonehenge, the awe-inspiring grandeur of Windsor Castle, the historic splendidness of the British Museum, the monumental glory of Buckingham Palace, or the iconic beauty of Tower Bridge, not to mention the numerous other exquisite places to experience?

But without proper guidance, the process of acquiring a visa and other necessary travel documents can be a huge turn-off for any traveller. The Visa Guy is here to make travel easy for everyone, and here is our simple step-by-step guide to getting a UK tourist visa from the UAE.

Table of Contents

How to Get a UK Tourist Visa from UAE

The application process for a UK tourist visa mainly involves an online application form and an appointment at a visa application centre. First, you have to choose from the pool of different types of UK visas and determine the kind of visa that suits your requirement as a tourist from UAE. The following step-by-step guidelines shall help you navigate the process of getting a UK tourist visa from start to end.

1. Determine Your Required Visa Type

Different types of uk visas.

There are numerous types of UK visas depending on your nationality, purpose of visit, duration of stay, and personal circumstances and skills. There are standard visitor visas, work visas, student visas, marriage visitor visas, family visas, ancestry visas etc. However, there are three possible visa options for a tourist to consider and determine the suitable one.

– Visa Not Required

The first thing to determine is whether you need a visa to enter the UK. Depending on your nationality, as per your passport, you might not require a visa at all. For example, if you are a Canadian national residing in the UAE, you are exempted from the visa requirement to travel to the UK for a stay shorter than 6 months. Similarly, citizens of the USA, EU member states, and certain commonwealth countries do not need a visa to stay in the UK for no longer than 6 months.

You can check whether you require a visa to enter the UK here .

– Electronic Visa Waiver

Instead of a Standard Visitor Visa, nationals of some middle-eastern countries, including the UAE, have the option to enter the UK with an Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW) . The UK Electronic Visa Waiver, a digital alternative to regular visitor visas, can be availed by the nationals of the following countries if their stay is no longer than six months for tourism, business, study, or medical treatment:

  • Saudi Arabia
  • United Arab Emirates

If you are a national of one of the six countries mentioned above and residing in UAE, the easiest option is to go for an Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW).

– Standard Visitor Visa

Suppose you belong neither to any nationalities exempted from the UK visa requirement nor to the nationalities that can avail of an Electronic Visa Waiver. In that case, you must get a Standard Visitor Visa to travel to the UK as a tourist. Those eligible for an Electronic Visa Waiver can also get a UK Standard Visitor Visa. You can usually stay up to 6 months in the UK with a standard visitor visa. However, in certain circumstances like academics and medical treatment, you might be permitted to stay longer than six months.

To get a UK Standard Visitor Visa, you must apply online and attend an appointment at a visa application centre before you travel to the UK. Suppose you plan to visit the UK as a tourist regularly. In that case, you may opt for the long-term standard visitor visa, which will help you avoid the visa application process each time you travel, although the maximum stay per visit would remain 6 months.

The earliest you can apply for a visitor visa is three months before your journey. You should begin your visa application process as soon as possible to relax and prepare for your travel comfortably.

2. Gather the Required Documents

You must keep the following documents ready for a seamless visa application process. Check the documents required for a UK tourist visa from UAE.

What to do if your application is approved.

If your Visa Application Centre has collected your passport, they will return it with a sticker (vignette) once your application is approved. If you keep your passport, you have to take your passport to the Visa Application Centre to get the vignette in the passport. The vignette will show the visa type you have been granted, the validity dates, and the visa conditions. If you encounter any error in your vignette, contact your Visa Application centre and get it corrected as soon as possible.

What to do if your application is denied.

If your Visa application is refused, you will receive an email or a letter explaining the denial. If the Visa Application Centre keeps your passport, it will be returned to you. The letter will mention if you can appeal the rejection decision.

Everything You Need To Know About A UAE Visa

united-arab-emirates-visa-image

But the good news is that you can get a visa on arrival (VOA) after landing at the airport when you are entering the nation for tourism, transit, or business purposes.

A UAE visit VOA arrives with a maximum stay period of up to 30 days. Once you exit the country, your visa is automatically terminated.

This means that you cannot use the same visa to re-enter UAE, even if it is still valid. You need to obtain a fresh VOA every time you seek to enter UAE borders.

If you wish to extend your stay in UAE, you can apply for an extension twice, while you are within the country’s borders. Each extension allows you an additional stay period of 30 days.

For further help, you should contact the UAE Immigration in Dubai (04-3980000) or in Abu Dhabi (02-4024500).

Passport requirements for availing a Visa on Arrival

Once you land in the UAE, you will need to present your passport for stamping the Visa on It should hold a minimum validity of 6 months from the date of entry into the UAE, provided your purpose of the trip is related to business or tourism. Remember that your passport should also have at least two blank pages for visa stamping.

However, if you are entering the nation only for transit and you do not have to pass through immigration, your passport can have a validity of 3 months.

Again, if you have a valid UK residence permit, your passport must have a minimum validity of 3 months from your date of arrival in the UAE.

Note: If your passport specifies another category of British nationalities such as British Overseas Citizen or British National Overseas, you shall need to obtain a visa from the nearest UAE Embassy before traveling to the UAE.

Additional requirements for obtaining a VOA at UAE airports

Just like the common requirements for availing a visa on arrival in any country, you need to carry certain mandatory documents to obtain one in the UAE as well. These include:

  • Proof of sufficient funds, which ensure that you have the required means to support your stay in the country. You can present this evidence in the form of cash, cards, or recent bank statements.
  • Remember to carry originals or copies of your onward/return airline tickets.
  • You may be asked to present proof that specifies the purpose of your trip.
  • Required documentation for the next destination

Confirm with your airline, before you travel, if they allow boarding without a visa. Sometimes, regulations change and you may not be aware of the new rules. A simple confirmation goes a long way in avoiding any unwelcome surprises after all your travel plans are final.

Seeking employment in the UAE

Do note that you are not allowed to engage in any remuneration-generating work on a visit visa on arrival. What you can do is, first enter the country on a VOA. Next, you can apply for a probationary work permit with the Ministry of Labour. This permit comes with a validity of 3 months and allows you to stay up to 60 days.

If you fail to follow this mandatory requirement and are discovered working on an ordinary visit visa, you may be jailed, fined, or even deported.

If you wish to extend your stay in the UAE beyond the granted period of 60 days, you need to contact the UAE Consulate in London, the Naturalisation and Residency Department in Dubai or visit the website of the UAE Federal E-Government Portal.

Another method of working in the UAE on a long-term basis is to apply for a residence visa once you enter the border on a visit VOA.

After you obtain the visa, you may be asked by your UAE employer to submit your passport with the company.

You may find this clause as part of the terms and conditions of employment. However, this is illegal and you can appeal to the Labour Department if such an incident happens in your case.

Note: All applications for a residence visa require a blood test. If you are tested positive for HIV, you shall be detained and eventually deported.

Once your said employment period is over, please ensure that you cancel your work visa before departing the UAE permanently. Failure to do so has severe penalties. You can be deported on the grounds that you are an absconder or arrested during your next entry into the country. Additionally, prior to exiting the country, even if you are in transit, remember to repay all your debts and resolve any ongoing cases against you. You must display your legal status in the UAE when you depart. If you are facing a case for a travel ban, legal proceedings, unpaid debts, or custody dispute, you can be refused exit from the UAE.

Medication Requirements

UAE immigration officials follow strict rules when it comes to the intake of medications. If you carry prescribed or over the counter medicines, you have to follow the UAE’s rules on whether these drugs are allowed within its borders.

Certain medications are classified by the UAE as narcotic, psychotropic, controlled or semi-controlled. If your drugs fall under any of these categories, you need to obtain prior approval from UAE authorities.

You can find a complete list of these regulates on the website for the UAE Ministry of Health.

It is advised that you get this approval in advance via an electronic application form available on the UAE Ministry of Health website. If you do not carry this approval, you shall need to present relevant documents. Sometimes, approval is not guaranteed after arrival and worse still, you might have to face prosecution under UAE law.

There are also limits on the number of medications allowed into the country. If your medicines do not fall under the classification above, you can bring a supply of 3 months. Otherwise, this quantity is reduced to a supply of 1 month.

Rules to be followed if you have previously traveled to Israel

If you have formerly visited Israel and your passport contains Israeli visas or stamps, you can enter the UAE if you are not traveling for work-related activities. If it is the latter, you will be subjected to further checks.

British nationals holding dual nationality of Israeli citizenship can sometimes be refused entry into the nation.

Living As A British Expat in Dubai

As an expat in this city, you will not be a “minority” when you move from the UK to Dubai . A whopping 80% of the population o f the emirate are expats!

Dubai is a cosmopolitan city in all sense of the word , the reaso n why there is a n o bvious international influence in the food, lifestyle and even the architecture .

Dubai is an Islamic state, and the role of religion in Dubai’s culture is quite significant. When you move to Dubai, there are several cultural aspects to consider . No te that alcohol consumption is allo wed in Dubai but o nly privately or in licensed venues .

Your Home in Dubai

Finding the right accommodation is one of the most important things when you move from the UK to Dubai. With a booming real estate industry, the housing market in Dubai is a veritable treasure trove. From luxury apartments to upscale villas and even modest studios, there’s something for everyone !

Many communities have a large Western expat population, so making friends and finding a villa or apartment to rent will be easy!

Some popular areas for British expats include Dubai Marina, Downtown Dubai and Arabian Ranches. We recommend finding a property agent to help you with your search to understand better what will work best. Try to familiarise yourself with RERA laws because they govern all tenancy contracts in Dubai.

If you compare the rents in Dubai to those in London, the former will be 15% to 30% cheaper. The rental cost greatly depends on the location of your property. Posh areas in London will cost more than a family-friendly locality in Dubai.

According to Bayut’s H1 2023 Dubai Rental Market report , the most affordable properties are available in JVC, Bur Dubai, DAMAC Hills 2 and Mirdif. These areas have the most budget-friendly apartments ranging from studios to 2-bedroom units for rent.

To put things in perspective, the starting rent for studios in JVC costs AED 32k, while the same property in Dubai Marina starts from AED 50k per year.

Compared to some parts of England, this might seem considerably higher, but prices decrease as you move from the centre of Dubai into the suburbs.

Rents are usually paid in post-dated checks, quarterly, bi-annually or yearly payments. Some landlords allow monthly payments, but that is not the norm and can sometimes be more expensive.

Popular areas for British expats to live in the UK

Settling into your Dubai Home

When you move from the UK to Dubai, it’s quite easy to settle in once you find your home. Dubai has several household goods and furniture stores, including a few international favourites like IKEA . But, head to the second-hand furniture stores in Dubai for budget-friendly shopping to get great pieces at a discount.

DEWA generally provides electricity and water. When temperatures reach over 40 degrees in summer, expect your bills to be higher since your air-conditioning usage will increase!

Most residential areas also have a good selection of supermarkets and groceries, similar to Asda and Sainsbury’s. British brand Waitrose has branches in Dubai Mall and Dubai Marina Mall; you can also find their products in the many Spinneys supermarkets across the city.

Getting Around Dubai

Once you have the house all sorted, you can think of moving on to the logistics of things. Londoners moving to Dubai will be happy to know the emirate has a metro service.

The Dubai Metro seamlessly connect most parts of the city and is the preferred mode of public transport for most Britons. Besides the metro, there are other modes of exceptional public transport in Dubai for a pocket-friendly commute.

For those opting to drive, you can easily convert your UK driving license to a UAE one by visiting any of the Roads and Transport Authorities Offices (RTA) and even transfer your No Claims Discount (NCD) for a reasonable motor insurance policy.

Dubai metro is preferred by British expats

Average prices for cars in Dubai are similar to those in the UK, but petrol is considerably cheaper.

Government-run taxi fleets are a common sight on the roads. And there are countless public transport apps in Dubai, like Uber and Careem. Taxis are cheaper than in the UK, so a trip home from the airport won’t mean you have to go without groceries for a week!

Schools for British Expats Moving to Dubai

For British expats in Dubai, many private schools in Dubai offer international curriculums . Most Britons moving to Dubai enrol their children in GCSE schools for a more familiar style of education. There are more than 50 British schools in Dubai, all vetted by the KHDA, giving British expats in Dubai a wide variety of choices regarding their children’s education.

Dubai offers a lavish lifestyle with an array of options for scintillating nightlife. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and cafes in the city.

Pints here are pricier than in the UK, and food tends to be marginally more expensive . However, you have to factor in the income-tax savings as well.

The lifestyle in Dubai is one of the perks of moving from the UK

The city is well known for its gargantuan malls, which stock UK high street favourites like Next, M&S, H&M, Mango and Zara stores in Dubai .

Some leading British department stores like Harvey Nichols have also found a home in Dubai’s malls , so there will be no pining for Westfield or Trafford Centre.

The wonderful thing about this city is that it’s not just about skyscrapers and opulent hotels. Heritage sites in Dubai are eternal reminders of the rich past . There are lush green parks where you can spend quality time with your loved ones.

For the sporty sorts, the lush golf courses and abundance of water sports v enues add more allure to this emirate.

Sporty British expats will love Dubai

The initial few months after moving to Dubai from the UK will strain your finances. There are rents to cover, things to be bought and other overhead expenses to take care of.

After the first six months, your  cost of living in Dubai  depends on where you live, how often you shop and dine out, etc.

You can spend a pretty penny in Dubai, but most Britons save a considerable amount that can go into their retirement fund.

If you want to work or invest in the UK

You can work in the UK on a short or long-term basis with a Work Visa. There are many types of Work Visa.

The visa you need depends upon:

  • Your skills and qualifications.

European Union adopts more favourable Schengen visa rules for Indians

Indian Nationals can now apply for a multiple entry Schengen visa with longer validity

On 18 April 2024, the European Commission adopted specific rules on the issuing of multiple entry visas to Indian nationals, which are more favourable than the standard rules of the Visa Code that applied to date. This new visa ‘cascade’ regime for Indian nationals residing in India who apply for Schengen (short-stay) visas in India will provide easier access to visas with multi-year validity for travellers with an established travel history, if the passport validity allows.

According to the newly adopted visa “cascade” regime for India, Indian nationals can now be issued long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years after having obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years. The two-year visa will normally be followed by a five-year visa, if the passport has sufficient validity remaining. During the validity period of these visas, holders enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals.

This decision comes in the context of strengthened relations under the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, which seeks comprehensive cooperation on migration policy between the EU and India, with facilitation of people-to-people contacts being of key aspect due to the importance of India as a partner for the EU.

Schengen visas allow the holder to travel freely in the Schengen area for short stays of a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period. The visas are not purpose-bound, but they do not grant the right to work. The Schengen area consists of 29 European countries (of which 25 are EU states): Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland and Sweden, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
