What Is a Farewell Tour in the NBA? Looking Back at Draymond Green’s Diss on Paul Pierce About Kobe Bryant’s Farewell Tour

Credits: USA Today Sports

A farewell tour in the NBA is a moniker for a legendary player’s final season in the league. Over the years, icons have announced in the campaign that they’d retire at the end of the season, kickstarting a series of tributes from fans and teams in away arenas to celebrate their legendary careers and pay homage to the battles that their team has had with that player.

Only a handful of players have had the luxury of getting a farewell tour. In November 2015, Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant announced 15 games into the season that he’d retire at the end of the 2015-16 campaign. The Lakers’ roster was equipped to earn a playoff spot, making the rest of the season all about celebrating the five-time NBA champion’s career. Bryant was felicitated with gifts and tribute videos at every arena in the NBA, including the Lakers’ arch-nemesis Boston Celtics ‘ TD Garden.

While Bryant received adulation at every arena, not every icon’s final season was met with the same fanfare. In September 2016, Paul Pierce announced that the 2016-17 season would be his last in the NBA. His farewell tour paled in comparison to Bryant’s, and Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green even used it to mock the former Finals MVP.

In February 2017, Pierce’s Los Angeles Clippers visited the Warriors’ Oracle Arena. Less than a minute into the game, Green got into a verbal spat with the forward, who was on the bench, and said,

“Chasing that farewell tour, they don’t love you like that. You can’t get no farewell tour, they don’t love you like that. You ain’t got that type of love. You thought you was Kobe.”

A farewell tour is a distinction only a few players in NBA history have earned. Bryant is the most recent recipient, and it’ll be a while before we see another player get showered with love like he was in his final season.

LeBron James contemplating a farewell tour

The next player to retire from the NBA with a resume comparable to Kobe Bryant’s will likely be LeBron James . The four-time NBA champion turned 39 in December 2023 and recently was asked about his potential retirement date during the All-Star weekend in Indiana. He revealed he doesn’t know when he’ll leave the sport but knows he doesn’t have too many years left.

The Lakers superstar was asked if he would announce his retirement a year in advance and embark on a farewell tour. He claimed he’s 50/50 on announcing it beforehand and retiring out of the blue like San Antonio Spurs icon Tim Duncan . He said,

“There’s times when I feel like I guess I owe it to my fans that have been along this journey with me for two decades plus, to be able to give them that moment where it’s every city and whatever the case may be and they give you your flowers or whatever the case may be… But the other side of I’ve never been that great with accepting like praise. It’s a weird feeling for me. I never really talked about it much, but it’s just a weird feeling for me.”

Given his accomplishments, it’s a no-brainer that James should embark on a farewell tour. However, unlike Bryant in his final few seasons, he’s still playing at an All-NBA level. Announcing his retirement beforehand while still producing at an elite level might not be wise. It’s unclear what the best path for James is, but he deserves to be celebrated in every arena like Bryant was in his final year.

David Ortiz is retiring at the end of this year. You know this, and you’ve probably known it for a while: The nine-time All-Star, who helped snap the Curse of the Bambino, is in the midst of an extended farewell tour, joining stars like Kobe Bryant, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and Chipper Jones in having a season-long goodbye. Along the way, bells have clanged at nearly every stop: He’s been called up to home plate after home plate to be serenaded with congratulations, video tributes, fond recollections of home runs past, and topical gifts, which so far have included: peanut butter from the Twins , a box of cigars from the White Sox , a cowboy hat from the Astros , barbecue sauce from the Royals , a cable car bell from the Giants , and a golf cart and stadium seats from the Red Sox spring training facility.

And, man, is he sick of it all.

“I’m too busy. I have too many things to do. I barely have time to do anything,” Ortiz told ESPN Deportes on Sunday when asked about all of the attention he’s been getting. “It’s very difficult for me. If I had even imagined that it would be so difficult, I wouldn’t have announced anything. There are too many people I have to pay attention to, and on top of that I have to prepare for a game.”

You might think that Big Papi, who is hitting a resurgent .339 this season, has a point: We’ve gone too far with farewell tours, and this has got to stop. Jeter’s tour was too long. Kobe’s show was too much. The tours are tedious, distracting, self-serving, and just all-around bad. Do we really need to carry out month after month of heartfelt so longs?

To which I say: Hell yes we do . Ortiz has finally shown us how to stop the Athletic Farewell Tour Industrial Complex: Make the goodbyes so big, so extravagant, and so totally and fantastically annoying that they exhaust our most beloved stars and make them beg for mercy — or, more specifically, for peace, quiet, and sports.

So let’s double down. Let’s triple down. Let’s show the stars who might be thinking about tropical beaches soon enough — our Ichiro Suzuki s or Dirk Nowitzkis — just what a terrifying, soul-sucking miasma of love we can create for them. Let’s see if they don’t think twice about announcing their retirement way in advance of actually retiring.

Let’s write them songs to be played by an orchestra of volunteer musicians, all of whom just took up the recorder. Let’s bring in every child with a broken arm within city limits and arrange them along the foul lines, with only their casts, Sharpies, and the odd vuvuzela, and call out the athletes to say hello. Let’s present our favorite players with 100 different things in denominations of their jersey number: 34 mitts, 34 doubloons, 34 Milwaukee parakeets, 34 authentic Tampa Bay microwaves — all for you, Papi.

Let’s make them long, saccharine tributes in black and white . Let’s commission fan tributes in the same style. Let’s make the athletes judge them, tucked into conference rooms with nothing but 12 hours of amateur adulation, four gallons of LaCroix, and thoughts of their still-distant freedom. Let’s make them come out in the summer heat and host an award ceremony.

I want our athletes with closets full of bedazzled cowboy boots, pantries stuffed with Vegemite, driveways filled with barrels of popcorn, and garages lined with American Girl dolls refashioned in their likenesses. Let’s make it so our love is all these players can think about through month after month of commemorative pins and Hawaiian shirts. Let’s love them and squeeze them and make them wonder if we’ll ever let them go.

We will, of course, and we’ll miss them dearly in the end. But maybe the next farewell tour won’t drag on for quite so damn long.

LeBron James Addresses NBA Future, Teases Possibility of Farewell Tour

  • Author: Kristen Wong

In this story:

Los Angeles Lakers

As  LeBron James  prepares to make his record-breaking 20th appearance in the NBA All-Star Game, it appears as though the  Los Angeles Lakers  star has retirement on his mind.

In a press conference before the All-Star Game, James admitted that he hopes to end his career with the Lakers. He didn’t give a specific timeline on when he might hang up his shoes, but he did briefly address his NBA future.

“I have not mapped out how many seasons I have left. I know it’s not that many,” James said on Sunday. “I am a Laker, and I’ve been very happy being a Laker the last six years, and hopefully it stays that way. I don’t have the answer to how long it will be or what uniform I’ll be wearing. Hopefully, it’s with the Lakers. It’s a great organization with so many greats. We’ll see. I don’t know how it’s going to end, but it’s coming.”

Prior to the NBA trade deadline , the 39-year-old was reportedly targeted by the  Golden State Warriors , but James closed the door on any potential deal . He has reiterated in the past that he wants to play with his son, Bronny, who could enter the 2024 NBA Draft this June, and the Lakers have in turn been “willing to explore” the prospect of adding Bronny James next season, according a report from The Athletic .

As for how his future retirement plan might play out, James said he was undecided on whether he wanted to end his career with a farewell tour or “just Tim Duncan it.”

“I’m 50-50,” continued James. “I’m going to be honest. There are times I feel like I owe it to my fans who have been along this journey with me for two decades-plus, to be able to give them that moment, where it’s every city, and they give you your flowers or whatever the case may be. That seems cool, but the other side—I’ve never been that great with accepting praise. It’s a weird feeling for me. I’ve never really talked about it much.

“To go to each city, if that’s the case—I’ve seen Michael [Jordan]’s, I’ve seen Kobe [Bryant]’s, I’ve seen a lot of guys’ [farewell tour]—I just don’t know how I’d feel. I don’t know if I’d feel great about it. Maybe the only child in me. I don’t know.”

James, currently in his sixth year with the Lakers and 21st year in the NBA, is eligible to opt-out at the end of the 2023-24 season. However, he’s made perfectly clear his intentions to stay in Los Angeles.

Brandon Graham hopes for “farewell tour” with Eagles next season

  • Josh Alper ,

Center Jason Kelce is set to retire from the NFL, but another longtime fixture of the Eagles lineup hopes he’ll have one more run with the team.

Defensive end Brandon Graham agreed to a one-year contract with the team before the 2023 season and he had 16 tackles, three sacks, and six quarterback hits during the regular season. After Monday’s loss to the Buccaneers, Graham said he’d like to return for a 15th and final year with the club in 2024.

“It’ll be my farewell tour next year. If the Eagles want me to do it one more time, I would love to be here because I know we have something special,” Graham said, via NBCSportsPhiladelphia.com.

Graham said the last weeks of this season were frustrating as the team nosedived after a 10-1 start to the year, but said he’s confident General Manager Howie Roseman will “work his magic” to make for a better 2024. It remains to be seen if Roseman and the Eagles think Graham will be part of that formula.

Derek Jeter: The Longest Goodbye

By Dan Epstein

Dan Epstein

That goddamned Gatorade commercial was the final straw.

I tried my best all summer to ignore the Derek Jeter farewell fellatio-fest, but keeping this whole barf-inducing RE2PECTacle at bay has been all but impossible. Nearly every team the New York Yankees played this season paid grandiose homage to their opponents’ retiring captain; at one agonizingly awkward pregame ceremony after another, Jeter has left piled high with gifts like personalized kayaks , personalized paddle boards , personalized guitars , personalized golf clubs and cowboy boots .

Teams have presented him with Colorado ski trips and Italian vacations, sacrificial virgins with his uniform number tattooed in Yankee blue on their lower backs and many thousands of dollars in donations to Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation . (OK, so I made up the virgins thing; then again, if the Yankees had played the Miami Marlins this year, I wouldn’t have put it past Jeffrey Loria to sign off on something like that.)

The sports media – Keith Olbermann notwithstanding – have offered up gifts of their own, in the form of endless, fawning features about Jeter’s brilliant career, his upstanding character and of course his intrinsic ability to “play the game the right way.” Fox’s TV coverage of this summer’s All-Star Game was even more blatantly worshipful of Jeter than it was of his retiring teammate Mariano Rivera during 2013’s Midsummer Classic; listening to Joe Buck gush over the Yankee captain, one couldn’t help but feel immense pity for whomever was going to have to clean the underside of the announcer’s desk afterwards.

And then there was the “controversy” over Cardinals hurler Adam Wainwright’s admission that he’d intentionally thrown Jeter “ a couple of pipe shots ” down the center of the plate; though meant as a respectful (sorry, RE2PECTful) gesture, it still caused considerable huffing and puffing from the “play the game right way” crowd. Derek Jeter should be offended by such an offering, they seethed. Derek Jeter doesn’t need pipe shots! Derek Jeter can skin a 92 MPH fastball with his bare hands!

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

The deification of the future Hall of Famer has only ratcheted up in intensity and absurdity as the season has worn on, even while he’s looked increasingly mortal at the plate. (As of this writing, he’s put up a supremely wretched slash line of .230/.270/.293 since Wainwright grooved him one.) But it reached toxic proportions last week, when Gatorade unveiled their “Made in New York” commercial.

Hailed as a major media event by everyone from Newsweek to ESPN , the ad shows Jeter deciding – for apparently the first time in his 20 seasons with the Yankees – to walk the streets of the Bronx on his way to the ballpark. It’s reminiscent of that Fiat ad from a few years back, where Jennifer Lopez drove a 500 Cabrio from Manhattan to her old ‘hood , only this one’s even sillier, and shot in sumptuous black and white that’s supposed to convey a “classic” gravitas. Children beam, young women gasp, old women weep and working stiffs shout his name as Jeter glides uncomfortably through their midst to the tune of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way.” It’s like the Second Coming of Christ as imagined by GQ .

There’s no denying that Jeter was a great player in his prime; I don’t doubt that Yankees fans love him, and I’m certainly not disputing his Hall of Fame qualifications. But players with more impressive careers than his (and there have been quite a few, despite whatever “We’ll not see his likes again!” nonsense Yankees broadcaster Suzyn Waldman might be braying ) have essayed their final seasons amid only a fraction of the hype surrounding Jeter’s retirement.

Paul Molitor, a first-ballot HOF inductee with similar numbers, waited until several months after the 1998 season to announce that he wasn’t coming back. There wasn’t a ceremonial “farewell tour” for Reggie Jackson , arguably the biggest star (and ego) of his era, even though he announced before the 1987 season began that it would be his last. Hank Aaron, struggling horribly at the plate during the last year of his brilliant career, refused commissioner Bowie Kuhn’s entreaties for him to play in the 1976 All-Star Game, choosing instead to watch the game from the stands.

Sure, we’re living in different, more media-inundated times. But White Sox captain Paul Konerko – a borderline Hall of Fame candidate at best, but a feared slugger and a guy who’s played more games on Chicago’s South Side than anyone not named Luke Appling – is also about to retire at season’s end , but his final year as a player has been primarily devoid of fanfare. It’s also worth noting that Konerko, who returned this year with the understanding that his primary role would be to mentor the team’s young players, has appeared in just a little more than half of his team’s games in 2014; the Yankees, on the other hand, decided before the season even began to live or die with the 40-year-old Jeter starting at shortstop, a tack which may have actually cost them a shot at the postseason.

Keepers of the Corner: The Navin Field Grounds Crew

Baseball hall of fame: the splendid six are a class for the ages.

So why all the hype surrounding Jeter’s retirement? Marketing, of course. Derek Jeter may not have been the best baseball player of his era, but he has certainly been the most marketable, hence all the recent articles wondering who will be “ the new face of baseball ” once Jeter packs it in. Sure, there’s Mike Trout, but he’s about as charismatic as one of the Subway sandwiches he shills. The initial excitement surrounding Bryce Harper has been dissipated somewhat by his arrogance and injuries. Yasiel Puig might be the most exciting player in the game right now, but his tendency to showboat (and make major mental mistakes) has made him more controversial than marketable.

Jeter, by contrast, is an advertising agency’s wet dream. He’s a “gamer” with five World Series rings. He’s played his entire career for the same team – thus marking him as something of a throwback to a more feel-good era of baseball, regardless of how well he’s been compensated for sticking around – a team which just happens to be the world’s most famous baseball franchise. He’s respected (sorry, RE2PECTed) by teammates and opponents alike; he’s never committed any image-besmirching missteps in his personal life (unless you count dating Mariah Carey ); and best of all, he’s never been linked to any performance enhancing drugs.

Along with wanting to squeeze every last possible dollar out of his image while he’s still in uniform, I suspect that this relentless send-off for Jeter is at least partly motivated by Major League Baseball’s desire to absolve itself of the steroids mess that occurred under the selectively watchful eye of commissioner Bud Selig, who also happens to be retiring at the end of this season.

Meet the MVP of 'Shōgun' — Ex-Punk Rocker and Japanese Movie Star Tadanobu Asano

Billie eilish would like to reintroduce herself, team trump is ready to lose the supreme court immunity case. they’re celebrating, russian mercenaries hunt the african warlord america couldn’t catch.

The underlying message of Jeter’s farewell tour (which is helpfully perpetuated by the same media that willfully played dumb for years while PEDs were running rampant) seems to be that if we all just prostrate ourselves before St. Jeter, who played the game clean and played the game right, then we will be touched by the true spirit of baseball and can finally put Barry Bonds’ HGH-inflated cap size, Manny Ramirez’s ovary pills and just about everything A-Rod behind us. If we touch the hem of his pinstripes, only then will we be truly healed.

On Sunday, September 28, Derek Jeter will play his last regular-season game. The site will be Fenway Park, and Boston fans will no doubt cheer and tip their hats to the Yankee captain out of, well, RE2PECT for his role in all of those thunderous Yankees-Red Sox clashes from the past 20 years. And that’s where, hopefully, Derek Jeter’s career will end – because if the Yankees somehow manage to make the playoffs, the ensuing onslaught of breathless “Jeter’s last postseason” puffery is gonna make a lot of people want to watch football instead.

B-52s

Some 45 years after their first performance, new wave icons the B-52s have announced a farewell tour that kicks off this summer.

The jaunt — billed as “Their final tour ever of planet Earth” — will hit 11 cities across the U.S., launching August 22 in Seattle and running through November 11, where it will finish at Atlanta’s legendary Fox Theatre, not far from their home base of Athens, Georgia. More shows will be added in the coming weeks; see current routing below.

The pre-sale begins tomorrow, April 27, at 12 p.m. ET. KC and the Sunshine Band and the Tubes are set to make special guest appearances on select dates.

To kick off the tour, the B-52s will perform on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” tomorrow (April 27) as well.

MRC Films and Fulwell 73 have announced that the film documentary on the band will be released in early 2023. Directed by Craig Johnson (Skeleton Twins; Wilson; Alex Strangelove) and executive-produced by Fred Armisen, the film will trace the history and influence of the band. The film has also been given generous support of all band members including many personal archival photos and films that have never been released.

Says co-founder Kate Pierson, “Who knew what started as a way to have some fun and play music for our friends’ at house parties in Athens in 1977 would evolve into over 45 years of making music and touring the world. It’s been cosmic.”

Cindy Wilson, who also co-founded the band with her beloved late brother, Ricky, adds, “It has been a wild ride, that’s for sure. We feel truly blessed to have had an amazing career encouraging folks to dance, sing along with us and feel they can be whomever they are with our music.”

Fred Schneider, co-founder and perhaps the most unique front man in rock, sums up the band’s decision to retire from the road, “No one likes to throw a party more than we do, but after almost a half-century on the road, it’s time for one last blow-out with our friends and family…our fans. And with KC & The Sunshine Band and The Tubes on board, it’s going to be one hell of a farewell party at these concerts.”

Sum 41 goes out on top at sold-out Milwaukee stop of farewell tour at the Rave

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Is anyone actually buying the “farewell” that Sum 41 is selling?

OK, sure, a lot of people are literally buying it. The Canadian pop-punk veterans’ “Tour of the Setting Sum” farewell run came to the Rave’s Eagles Ballroom Saturday for one of the first stops, and the 3,500-person capacity venue was a sellout.

But let’s do the math. No one in Sum 41 is over 50. The Mötley Crüe guys are headlining Summerfest this June after bringing a “farewell tour” to the Big Gig a decade ago, and an 81-year-old Barry Manilow will play a final Milwaukee show at Fiserv Forum in August nine years after he seemingly played a final Milwaukee show.

It's hard to accept that Sum 41 is really leaving all of this behind, especially right now. Pop-punk is fueling a new generation of rising stars. Blink-182's classic lineup is back (and playing Fiserv Forum August 7), Green Day is headlining stadiums (including American Family Field Aug. 24), and Milwaukee will host not one but two Warped Tour-style festivals this summer: Sad Summer Festival at the Rave, and the Not Just a Phase Fest at Franklin Field.

But if the Eagles Ballroom show was really Milwaukee's last chance to see Sum 41, they showed they're going out at the top of their game.

This amped-up capacity crowd hardly needed any motivation, but Sum 41 kicked off their hour-and-45-minute set with "Motivation" anyway, the first song off first album "All Killer No Filler" from 2001, with wired frontman Deryck Whibley cruising the stage while lasers and lighting worked overtime. In a delightful detour from the recording, guitarists Dave Baksh and Tom Thacker , drummer Frank Zummo and bassist Jason McCaslin offered a dense and tense instrumental thrash break, the band's distinctive, metal-flexing tendencies later getting a full workout for 2004's "We're All To Blame."

From "Motivation" Sum 41 segued into "The Hell Song" from 2002 sophomore album "Does This Look Infected?," with Whibley heating up the crowd with a breathless, 15-second vocal note, followed by Baksh's gnarly guitar solo, adding gas to the flames. The momentum continued with another "Infected" track, "Over My Head (Better Off Dead)" — the crowdsurfing and circle pits intensifying as smoke and confetti were added to the effects arsenal — followed by 2004's "No Reason," where Zummo really let his drum assaults rip.

The 2007 anthem "Underclass Hero" came right after, with oversized balloons bouncing atop jumping bodies in the pit — and Whibley popping a few with the tail end of his handheld mic. The band's cacophonous sound silenced so the fans could triumphantly belt out the final chorus alone: "'Cause we won't give you control/And we don't need anything from you."

During "Hero" Whibley rightly suggested this night wasn't just a celebration of Sum 41's nearly 30-year run but also "a celebration of yourselves." The crowd's passion matched the band's Saturday and was more powerful than all of the production's bells and whistles.

If @Sum41 is truly going to call it quits after this farewell tour, they’re going to go out on top. My review and @therave photos of their final Milwaukee show @journalsentinel https://t.co/5ar2Ytzkev pic.twitter.com/6ZNF5mHemc — Piet Levy (@pietlevy) April 28, 2024

When the band started 2007's "Walking Disaster," the lights on the phones were so bright, the stage lights stayed off and the band was still fully illuminated. Even after Whibley suggested everyone needed to take a breather after an intense first 23 minutes, followed by the comparatively slower 2004 song "Some Say," some fans still couldn't resist moshing before the end. And "Dopamine," "Landmines" and "Rise Up" from the four-week-old "Heaven :x: Hell" album received boisterous singalongs typically reserved for longtime setlist standards. (It helps that those tracks are as invigorating as anything from across Sum 41's catalogue.)

When the most prized setlist standards did actually come near the end — "Fat Lip" accompanied by a storm of confetti, an equally electric "Still Waiting" initially sans any fancy stage enhancements — the crowd really went wild. Their biggest hit "In Too Deep" was a deeply satisfying finale — except it turned out it really wasn't the end.

Two minutes after the house lights came on, the outro music played on the speakers and about half of the crowd had left, Whibley and Thacker came back on stage — prompting fans at the staircases to sprint back to the ballroom floor. And as Thacker gently played keys, Whibley offered a sweet and calm farewell in the form of 2007's "So Long Goodbye" — with Baksh, McCaslin and Zummo coming out after a few minutes to give the song an adrenaline-pumping speed punk finish.

It was probably the best moment from a night full of memorable ones. But there was one moment fans definitely didn’t like: when Whibley referred to “Heaven :x: Hell” as the band’s final album, prompting a roar of booing.

“Ladies and gentlemen," Whibley replied cooly, "I can’t get enough of your boos."

Call it denial if you want, but a comment like that, combined with a show like this one, makes me firmly believe that Sum 41's "farewell" isn't going to stick. And the fans, clearly, would be just fine with that.

5 takeaways from Sum 41's Milwaukee concert, including openers the Interrupters and Joey Valence & Brae

As people walked into the show they were given yellow pieces of paper that read “No Moshing.” Naturally this crowd didn’t comply, especially with Whibley demanding a mosh circle open up just two songs into the set. But shortly after that he also told people to be safe and look after each other, and by the look of things from the balcony, the crowd complied in that regard.

At one point Whibley said he was bringing out a special guest, which turned out to be a guitar he's named "White Gold." It's a guitar that recently joined his collection, but it was actually used in the recording of one of his favorite albums by one of his favorite bands, 1996's "White Light, White Heat, White Trash" by Social Distortion. In their honor, Whibley played White Gold for a cover of "Ring of Fire" in the mode of Social Distortion's signature cover. (Social Distortion, by the way, is heading to the Rave's Eagles Ballroom with Bad Religion on May 14.)

Sum 41 offered one other cover Saturday, of Queen's "We Will Rock You," initially distinguished by Thacker's speedy showboating on guitar — until Whibley guided the crowd to get quiet and crouch down before the climax, with the band's sound and fans (literally) rising up together for a mosh-friendly finale.

Primary opener the Interrupters were essentially motivational speakers set to ska music, with the always-moving Aimee Allen, with a Joan Jett-style snarl, singing about not being pushed aside for “Take Back The Power,” living “like a warrior” on “Title Holder,” and being “easy on yourself” for “Easy on You.” She even offered gratitude for her heartbreak on “Afterthought.” The energy and uplift easily won over the Sum 41 fans, but just to make sure they had their full support, the Interrupters also offered a trombone-blaring cover of Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy” and a bit of “Blister in the Sun” in honor of Milwaukee rock heroes the Violent Femmes.

Joey Valence & Brae kicked off the night with a blast from the past, with originals like “Crank It Up,” “Drop!!” and “Punk Tactics” that are blatant rip-offs of Beastie Boys, but still pretty fun live. And the duo’s more hyperpop-leaning “Gumdrop” illustrated where they could take their act next.

Pierce confronts Draymond over ‘farewell tour' trash talk

Pierce confronts Draymond over ‘farewell tour' trash talk originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

It took a while, but Paul Pierce finally was able to respond to Draymond Green 's viral trash talk from seven years ago.

In a game between the Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers on Feb. 23, 2017, at Oracle Arena, the TNT broadcast picked up audio of Green trash-talking the 39-year-old Pierce, who sat on the Clippers bench during Los Angeles free-throw attempts early in the first quarter.

"Chasing that farewell tour, they don't love you like that!" Green yelled at Pierce from the court. "They ain't giving you no farewell tour, they don't love you like that ... you thought you was Kobe [Bryant]!"

One week after the incident, Pierce shared on an ABC broadcast of a Clippers game what he said from the sideline that set Green off in that moment.

"This is how it all started: Blake Griffin posted him up, got a foul, and I was just pretty much like, 'You can't guard Blake. He gonna give it to you all night. You not that good. You only good because you got Steph Curry , KD and Klay Thompson around. That's the only reason you get recognition,'" Pierce explained. "And so I'm trying to spark my team with the trash talk -- go at their emotional leader and give my guys some confidence. And that's when you hear him say what he said...

Fast forward seven years, and Pierce joined Green on the latest episode of "The Draymond Green Show," where the 46-year-old finally had an opportunity to confront Green about his viral trash talk.

. @paulpierce34 and @Money23Green finally address Draymond's "Farewell Tour" comments 🍿 FULL EPISODE OUT NOW: https://t.co/8lt7VoC3Aj pic.twitter.com/tbmNmGoxZE — The Volume (@TheVolumeSports) March 7, 2024

"I gotta address your viral s--t talking, first off," Pierce told Green. "Because you said your side of it and I hadn't had a chance to say my side of it yet. We go into the game and I'm just seeing how you're grabbing Blake [Griffin] and I'm like 'Damn, he be hella physical and he pushing on him,' and I'm like 'what the f--k going on, man? Hold on, Blake, bust his ass, man. Hell no you can't let him do that!' Because everybody knows you're the head of the snake and if you go at the head of the snake you got a shot.

"And I'm wolfin' at you like 'nah, f--k that, man. F--k him.' I'm shooting, I want everybody to know this is what we on this year. Damn, come on. This is the class of the league right here. You said what you said, right? And the camera is on me. And to be honest, I didn't hear what you said. People don't know this, but the microphone underneath the basket picks up everything. It made it look like you shot sometime to me, but honestly I didn't even hear what you said until after the game I'm looking at my Twitter like 'Oh damn, he went back at me.' Because I couldn't really see, I'm on the bench, you're on the other side."

Although he and Green feuded on the court over the years, Pierce respects the Warriors forward for always staying true to his fiery self.

"But I love the fact that you stayed true to who you are, because even before you won you was like that," Pierce told Green.

Green now is playing in his 12th NBA season and likely will join Pierce in the Hall of Fame one day. If the four-time All-Star ever has a farewell tour of his own, it's only fitting that Pierce makes an appearance in some capacity along the way.

LeBron James isn't sure if he wants farewell retirement tour

LeBron James knows he is getting close to the end of his career, and that means he is already starting to think about how he wants to exit the NBA. During his All-Star media availability on Sunday he said he is 50-50 on whether or not he wants to go with a farewell retirement tour, or if he just wants to "Tim Duncan it" and call it quits without announcing it ahead of time.

He talked about the pros and cons of both, including how he thinks he owes it to his fans around the league, but also acknowledging he doesn't always receive praise well.

Here he is discussing the possibility of each path.

Lakers’ LeBron James: “I don’t know how many seasons I have left. I know it’s not that many. … I was asked this question a couple days ago: ‘Will you take the farewell tour or just Tim Duncan it?’ I’m 50/50.” pic.twitter.com/G6olIePlnG — Ben Golliver (@BenGolliver) February 18, 2024

James has been one of the most significant players in NBA history and is generally considered to be, at worst, the second or third greatest player to ever step on an NBA floor. He has NBA championships with three different franchises (Miami, Cleveland and the Los Angeles Lakers ) and is consistently one of the most powerful forces and voices the league has ever seen.

Given all of that, it seems hard to imagine James not getting the retirement tour honor and instead walking off quietly into the sunset. With all due respect to Duncan and his greatness -- and he was unquestionably great -- even his career does not stack up to the impact and legacy of James.

Candace Parker Bids Farewell To The Court After 16 Years In The WNBA

Las Vegas Aces star Candace Parker is saying farewell to the court.

After an iconic 16-year career in the WNBA , she announced that it was time for her to retire on Instagram.

Candace Parker Announced Her Retirement On Sunday

Not long after the WNBA began embracing its new draft class, the WNBA star bid farewell to her basketball career in an emotional social media post.

On Sunday, Parker took to Instagram to share that it was time for her to retire from the WNBA. Parker, who joined the Las Vegas Aces last season, has faced some setbacks due to a foot injury and despite resigning with the Aces recently, she's decided that the time has come to hang up her jersey.

"I’m retiring. I promised I’d never cheat the game & that I’d leave it in a better place than I came into it. The competitor in me always wants 1 more, but it’s time. My HEART & body knew, but I needed to give my mind time to accept it," she wrote in the caption of a photo of her as a young child holding a basketball.

"I always wanted to walk off the court with no parade or tour, just privately with the ones I love. What now was to be my last game, I walked off the court with my daughter. I ended the journey just as I started it, with her."

Candace Parker's Foot Injury 'Isn't Cooperating'

Parker continued to explain in her Instagram post how her foot injury has sidelined her.

"This offseason hasn’t been fun on a foot that isn’t cooperating," she explained. "It’s no fun playing in pain (10 surgeries in my career) it’s no fun knowing what you could do, if only…it’s no fun hearing 'she isn’t the same' when I know why, it’s no fun accepting the fact you need surgery AGAIN."

The WNBA star also shared that she "fell in love with a little orange ball at 13 years old" and because of that love, her "world goes 'round."

"The highs are unmatched & the lows taught me lessons. On & off the court I’m proud I’ve always been true & stayed true to ME, even when it wasn’t popular," she continued.

"I’m grateful that for 16 years I PLAYED A GAME for a living & DESPITE all the injuries, I hooped. I’m grateful for family, friends, teammates, coaches, doctors, trainers & fans who made this journey so special."

Candace Parker Is Far From Done With Basketball!

She also gave a glimpse into her future endeavors, with basketball not going anywhere anytime soon.

"In the meantime, know I'm A BUSINESS, man, not a businessman. This is the beginning…I’m attacking business, private equity, ownership (I will own both an NBA & WNBA team), broadcasting, production, boardrooms, beach volleyball, dominoes (sorry babe it’s going to get more real) with the same intensity & focus I did basketball," she wrote.

"My mission in life, like Pat Summitt always said, is to 'chase people and passions and you will never fail.' Being a wife & mom still remains priority #1 & I’ve learned that time flies, so I plan to enjoy my family to the fullest!"

She concluded her post by telling "today's players" to "enjoy it."

"No matter how you prepare for it, you won’t be ready for the gap it leaves in your soul," she wrote. "Forgive me as I mourn a bit, but I’ll be back loving the game differently in a while."

Tons Of Positive Support And Well Wishes Filled The Comment Section Of Candace Parker's Retirement Post

In just a few short hours, Parker's Instagram post already had thousands of comments wishing her well in her new journey after retiring from the WNBA.

NBA legend Charles Barkley wrote, "Congratulations on a legendary career."

NBA on TNT shared, "Leaving the game better than you found it. Congratulations on a legendary career."

Vanessa Bryant said, "It’s in black & white… it’s official. Sending you love and hugs. Xo," and the Aces simply shared three red heart emojis.

Newly drafted WNBA player, Angel Reese, called Parker, "LEGEND" and WNBA player Dearica Hamby shared, "Thankful for what you’ve done for me personally and to the game we love! Never forget after having Amaya how you just wrapped your arms around me and supported me in any way. You’re loved."

Many other NBA and WNBA players, teams, celebrities, and fans also shared kind words for Parker.

'Parker Starting 5 Loading'

In mid-December, Parker shared the exciting news that her family is growing!

"Parker starting 5 loading! Mama and Mommy are switching from man-2-man to zone defense this spring!" Parker shared in an Instagram caption.

Maroof’s ’emotional’ farewell captures legacy for Pakistan women’s cricket

Trailblazing former Pakistan women’s cricket captain Bismah Maroof says ’emotional’ farewell was for team and family.

Bismah Maroof

Former Pakistan cricket captain Bismah Maroof remembers the look of befuddlement that quieted the typically beaming face of her two and a half year old daughter, Fatima, as she bid a tearful goodbye to her national teammates in Karachi on Thursday.

“She had never seen us like this,” Maroof, 32, told Al Jazeera, hours after calling time on her 17-year international career.

“Neither my teammates nor I could hold back; it was an emotional farewell as I exited the Pakistan squad and left for my hometown, Lahore. Fatima, naturally, couldn’t make sense of any of it.”

Maroof’s decision to quit international cricket came as a surprise, not least because of the timing – a day before the opening fixture of Pakistan’s home T20 international series in Karachi against the West Indies. She was part of the 16-player squad for the assignment.

“It wasn’t a sudden decision, to be honest,” Maroof, Pakistan’s leading run-scorer in women’s ODIs and T20Is, said. “I had long pondered my international retirement, and given the T20 World Cup is just four months away, it only felt fair that I walked away before the T20I series against West Indies.

“I wasn’t sure if I could sustain myself until the World Cup, so it was best I made way for the players who deserve a proper run in the lead-up to the World Cup.

‘The time was right for my Pakistan teammates and family’

“At this phase of my life,” said Maroof, who captained Pakistan in 96 matches – 62 in T20Is and 34 in ODIs, “I felt my family should take precedence, so I discussed the matter with them and gauged it as objectively as I could.

“Walking away from a team I had been part of since I first walked into it as a 15-year-old was never going to be easy. But the time was right, for the sake of my Pakistan teammates and my family.”

For someone who had become a regular companion of Maroof’s on pretty much every tour of hers since her inspirational return to professional cricket in March 2022 after childbirth, it was fitting that her daughter witnessed her final moments in the Pakistan dressing room as an international cricketer.

The social media graphic carrying Maroof’s retirement announcement unsurprisingly, too, had an image of her walking away holding her daughter’s hand.

The symbolism attached to Fatima in Maroof’s career is key to understanding the athlete’s imprint on her sport, especially in the subcontinent context.

Her legacy, after all, will be defined not only by her captaincy accomplishments, or her record 6,262 runs across 276 limited-over international appearances but also by her decision to return to top-flight cricket in March 2022, no less as captain, just six months after the birth of her first child, Fatima.

“After embracing motherhood, never did I see Bismah fall short of balancing her professional and non-professional roles,” Maroof’s close friend and longtime Pakistan teammate Javeria Khan, who retired from international cricket last month, told Al Jazeera.

“With her mother, Nighat, by her side, they both created an example out of Bismah – that a Pakistani woman can play top-level cricket after giving birth.

“She is a true icon and inspiration for so many. Pakistan cricket was really blessed to have a player like Bismah.”

A silent contributor ♥️ Aunty, words fall short to describe your contribution. You helped in Bismah’s dream to persue cricket after the arrival of Fatima. ‘Setting an example for women across the globe’

Female cricketers playing sport at the highest level after marriage, let alone childbirth, is a rarity in this part of the world. In that sense, Maroof has been an outlier.

Her pregnancy had nudged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) into formalising a paid maternity leave policy for the first time, and of which Maroof became the first beneficiary.

When she came out of her maternity leave, to lead Pakistan in the 2022 ODI World Cup in New Zealand, leading voices in the sport, including her contemporaries, hailed her as a groundbreaker. “…setting an example for women across the globe,” wrote star India batter Smriti Mandhana on her Instagram story with a viral picture of Fatima cradled in Maroof’s arms, surrounded by the India players, after the India vs Pakistan fixture in the world tournament.

“When I think of my return post-childbirth two years ago, I still can’t help but wonder, ‘Arre, maine yeh kaise kar liya? (How did I manage to pull it off?),’” Maroof said, smiling.

“It wasn’t easy because for nearly two years Fatima had to be breastfed. Balancing motherly duties with my playing commitments was a challenge – physically and emotionally. Without that policy or the support of my mother, father and husband, I wouldn’t have been able to play this long.”

Under the PCB policy, Pakistan’s centrally contracted cricketers are entitled to up to 12 months of paid maternity leave and are guaranteed a contract extension for the following year alongside several other benefits on either side of childbirth.

While no Pakistani cricketer has subsequently availed of the policy, Maroof has maintained that the PCB’s handling of her pregnancy could serve as a case study for other cricket-playing nations, particularly in South Asia.

“I remember when I took the pregnancy leave, I was overcome with a sense of guilt of not having done enough for Pakistan cricket, but the maternity policy fortified my desire and resolve to make a comeback,” said Maroof. “I thought: ‘If the board was doing that much for me, I had to do my best to return to Pakistan side.’

“I had a good deal of cricket left in me and I wanted to share my experiences with my other teammates, especially the younger ones.”

Pakistan's captain Bismah Maroof, left watches India's captain Harmanpreet Kaur

Looking back, Maroof describes that decision as one of the most “formative” ones, not just in her career, but also in her life.

“It’s not common in our South Asian culture for women to enter motherhood, play professional sport and carry one’s child around with oneself on sporting assignments. Because of its rarity, I knew my motherhood would be covered by global media, so it was imperative to try to be at my competitive best for my country and also highlight the role of everyone, including my teammates, who made the journey possible.”

A stylish left-hand batter who bowled part-time leg-spin, Maroof witnessed women’s cricket both in its nascency and its current professional embodiment in Pakistan. Having debuted against India in 2006, she went on to represent her country at the 2009, 2013, 2017, and 2022 ODI World Cups and featured in all eight editions of the T20 World Cup to date – from 2009 to 2023.

In June 2016, she took over the T20I captaincy from the legendary Sana Mir and then the ODI reins in September 2017.

“When I started playing cricket, very few people knew that Pakistan had a women’s cricket team. Even I had no clue about women’s cricket,” Maroof said. “But things have changed over time. In Pakistani society, there’s greater acceptance of girls playing cricket now. In fact, I have seen parents encouraging their daughters to take up cricket. Social media has also played a huge part in taking women’s cricket to places it had no presence in.”

A trailblazing tale for Pakistan women’s cricket

Sana Mir, who Maroof replaced, wrote on her X social media account in response to the retirement announcement: “Sad to see you go before the ICC T20 World Cup in Bangladesh later in the year. May your decision bring you peace.

“You have been a wonderful Ambassador and a rock for Pakistan batting lineup.”

Under Maroof’s captaincy, Pakistan defeated the higher-ranked New Zealand for the first time in ODIs, in 2017. The most-capped Pakistan woman in the format, she counts that victory among her career highlights, alongside the two gold-medal triumphs in the 2009 and 2010 Asian Games.

“For me, the discipline that cricket has taught me through the ups and downs in my career and those faced by women’s cricket in Pakistan has one of my biggest takeaways from my 17 years wearing the national jersey,” Maroof said.

“It’s built my core and identity.”

Beyond playing league cricket, Maroof said she hasn’t invested much thought yet in what her life might look like after her international retirement. As a self-avowed woman of few words, she believes she’s not cut out for commentary, but promises to keep a close eye on how the women’s game in Pakistan progresses hereon.

“The struggles my generation of female cricketers, or those before us like Sana experienced, are no longer there,” she said. “But there’s pressure of expectations on the younger lot. And to meet those expectations, our domestic structure needs strengthening and align it with the standard of international cricket.

“I hope to see Pakistan among the top four international teams because there’s no dearth of talent in our country.”

A smidgen of support might be all that is needed, as is borne out by Maroof’s trailblazing tale.

Aerosmith announces farewell tour return, new date for Boston concert

Aerosmith announced this week that its “Peace Out” farewell tour is set to resume in September.

The tour went on hiatus last fall and was indefinitely postponed while lead singer Steven Tyler recovered from damaged vocal cords and a fractured larynx.

“Unfortunately, Steven’s vocal injury is more serious than initially thought,” the band wrote in a social media post announcing the postponement. “As a result, all the currently scheduled PEACE OUT shows must be postponed to sometime in 2024, with new dates to be announced as soon as we know more.”

The band will kick off its return to the road with two newly added shows in Pennsylvania, first at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh on Sept. 20, followed by a show at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Sept. 23. Rockers The Black Crowes are also joining Aerosmith on tour as special guests.

After last year’s New Year’s Eve performance was postponed, Aerosmith’s holiday homecoming stop in Boston will now take place on Dec. 31 at TD Garden, with what is billed as “an electrifying show of Aerosmith’s groundbreaking hits performed in an immersive 360° production as they celebrate 50 years as America’s greatest rock band,” according to a press release.

Guitarist Joe Perry previously promised a return to the road in an interview with the Globe last winter.

“But with any luck we will be back out late summer and fall of 24,” Perry said. “And there’s always next New Year’s Eve! Stay tuned for that.”

Alongside the previously announced tour schedule, Aerosmith plans to make an extra stop in Florida at the Kia Center in Orlando on Feb. 11. The tour wraps with a final set in Buffalo, N.Y. at the KeyBank Center on Feb. 25.

All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the rescheduled shows, and tickets for the rescheduled dates and newly added shows go on sale on Friday at 10 a.m. on ticketmaster.com .

Neil Young and Crazy Horse scaled heights of ragged glory in transcendent Phoenix concert

farewell tour sports

Neil Young didn't waste any time getting into the epic guitar jams Saturday, April 27, at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre, taking the stage with Crazy Horse to set the tone for his first Phoenix concert since 2003 with the fuzz-guitar transcendence of "Cortez the Killer," a speaker-shredding meditation that made it past the 15-minute mark, just long enough to leave you wishing it had gone another 15 minutes.

They were six minutes deep before the singing started. And they dusted off the missing verse Young recently unearthed that didn't make it onto "Zuma" because the console in the studio lost power in the midst of recording an otherwise perfect take.

“I floated on the water,” Young sang nearly 50 years later in Phoenix. “I ate that ocean wave/ Two weeks after the slaughter/ I was living in a cave/ Came too late to get me/ There’s no one here to set me free/ From this rocky grave/ To that snow-capped ocean wave.”

Neil Young and Crazy Horse treat Phoenix to elevating guitar jams

It was a glorious start to a brilliant performance, from the cavernous majesty of his guitar tone to the weathered ache of his lead vocal as the members of Crazy Horse effortlessly lived up to the reputation that led him to title a 1990 album "Ragged Glory," played out in front of the oversized fake Fender amps and road cases they used on the Rust Never Sleeps Tour in the '70s.

This is Young's first major tour with Crazy Horse in 10 years and they're only three shows in, so we may have lucked into a concert that was even looser-limbed than usual. Songs were falling together like magic in slow pursuit of something more elusive than perfection.

It's been 55 years since Young and Crazy Horse spent two weeks in the studio bottling lightning on "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere," a masterpiece that featured heavily in Saturday's performance, from the proto-punk riffing of "Cinnamon Girl" to a sprawling rendition of "Down By the River," "The Losing End (When You're On)" and the country-rocking title track.

It's actually kind of amazing that two of the three original members of Crazy Horse — bassist Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina — are still out there touring with Young after 55 years. They're joined by Micah Nelson, Willie's son, on this tour. The 33-year-old is filling in on guitar for Nils Lofgren, who couldn't do this tour because of a previous commitment with the E Street Band.

But more on Lofgren later.

Nelson previously toured with Young as a member of Promise of the Real.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse haven't lost their magic after 55 years

To look at Young and his two fellow travelers from the early days, you'd clearly know they've aged a year or two since 1969. To hear them? Not so much. It didn't sound much different than the tours I saw Crazy Horse do in the '90s. It rocked with that same urgency and passion (and distortion).

Young has never been the world's flashiest guitarist but he gets more magic out of one note than most guitar heroes can pack into 20 or 30 notes in half the time, arriving at a sound that's his and his alone.

As a singer, his vocals have rarely been flawless, but they've always done exactly what the songs require with raw emotion to spare, and that remained the case Saturday in Phoenix, where the 78-year-old Young sounded great.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse 2024 setlist: Every song they played at Phoenix concert

Neil Young's set went heavy on classics, from 'Powderfinger' to 'Cortez'

The set went heavy on the classics, from those already mentioned to "Don't Cry No Tears" and "Powderfinger."

After "Love and Only Love," the only song they played from "Ragged Glory," Young sent his bandmates away for a three-song mini-set on acoustic guitar and harmonica, including “Comes a Time” and “Heart of Gold."

Then his bandmates returned to bring the set to a cacophonous conclusion with the speaker-bleeding majesty of “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)," Young defiantly insisting "Rock and roll will never die" while illustrating why that is before returning for a one-song encore, "Danger Bird," with guest piano by Lofgren, who lives in the Valley and was home on a break in touring with the E Street Band.

By that point, it was everything you could've hoped for from an artist who's been touring since the '60s, playing to the strength that made him such a legend in the first place.

The newest song they played was “Scattered (Let’s Think About Livin’)” from 1996’s "Broken Arrow," prefaced by a heartfelt tribute to producer David Briggs, who worked with Young on countless classic albums before his death in 1995.

It was as close to a greatest hits tour as you'll likely see from Young but because he kept it so unpolished and spontaneous, it felt as fresh as those songs would've felt at any point in Young's career, even a warhorse as frequently featured as "Cinnamon Girl" or "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)."

It was everything a Young fan could've hoped for when the tour was first announced and then some.

Young and Reverend Billy & the Stop Shopping Choir deliver Love Earth gospel

After the second song, "Cinnamon Girl," Young took a moment to address the fans.

"This is the part of the show where I stand here at the front and figure out what to say for just a minute or two," he said before leading the crowd in a call-and-response of "What's your favorite planet?" "Earth!"

Then, when the applause died down, he added, "I want my grandchildren's grandchildren to have this so they can go way out in the forest and walk around, way out in the fields and walk around. That's what I want them to see. We've gotta be here."

This is the Love Earth Tour, a sentiment at the heart of the opening set by Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir, a performance art ensemble whose surreal performance found the Reverend, dressed in a white suit, preaching an anti-war, pro-environment gospel.

"We're here to talk to you about the Earth!" the Reverend shouted. "We've got some high stakes here this evening. Couldn't be higher. It's about life! Saving life! Loving life! Being strange enough to change enough to find a way to live!"
