Eight last-minute NYC-themed Halloween costumes
You can pull these very 2022 costumes together in a few hours—we did.
Halloween is just a few days away and the Halloween parties are already starting . Don't have a costume? Don't freak out. The Time Out team is here to help.
Inspired by the Village Halloween Paraders , we pulled together eight very topical New York costumes that you can create in just a few hours and be the hit of the party. For each one, we’re sharing how-to tips, plus we’ve organized the costumes by difficulty level on a scale of one to five pumpkins (five being the most intensive). Here’s how to DIY your way to a really gourd time.
RECOMMENDED: Meet the local artists creating DIY looks for the Village Halloween Parade
RECOMMENDED: The best Halloween events for 2022 in NYC
1. A splooting squirrel
The city's poor overheated squirrels took the Internet by storm over the summer with their adorable pose to cool down by "heat dumping." Basically, they sprawl out on their bellies to cool down ... which is exactly how we stretch out on our kitchen floor after returning from a day in the summer sun. We were so charmed by these critters that we dressed up as a hot squirrel—not a sexy squirrel, to be clear, but that's also an option on the table.
How to do it: Dress in every brown item of clothing you have. We topped our costume off with a faux fur hat. For the tail, we used a faux fur shawl, but a brown boa would also work. To really go for the squirrel look, we bought a dog snout and ears from Party City for $10. Adjust the ears carefully and nobody will know they're dog ears, and the snout is nondescript enough to look squirrelish.
Difficulty level: 🎃🎃
2. Anna Delvey
The story of Anna Delvey , a.k.a. Anna Sorokin, is all about the art of illusion, so this fraudster (or is it heiress?) makes for a perfect Halloween costume. If anyone asks you for candy, just tell them you sent it via wire transfer.
How to do it: Grab a classic LBD (little black dress) from your closet and pair it with a black choker and black eyeglasses ( we got ours for $17 on Amazon ). It's really all about the attitude with this costume, so pretend you're an heiress with suitcases full of cash. For a true chef's kiss, stand in front of The Beekman for photos declaring that it's "sooo basic."
Difficulty level: 🎃🎃
3. The Gilded Age
When The Gilded Age premiered on HBO in January, it whisked viewers back to old New York, a time of ostentatious displays of wealth and oh-so-many luncheons. We leaned into the gilded glamour for this one with a perfectly pressed suit and a backdrop fit for a king. If you want to snap a photo out on the town, here's our guide to 13 places where you can still experience the Gilded Age.
How to do it: Bedeck yourself in your finest suit with a classic black tie, and you can even add a top hat if you've got one. Pose in front of a painting and add a few dried florals (we scored them at Trader Joe's for $4). We also created this invitation (using a free postcard from The Plaza) to luncheon because seriously these people loved to talk about luncheon. It promises to be the event of the season.
Difficulty level: 🎃 🎃
4. A $1 slice protestor
Nothing is safe from inflation, not even our beloved $1 slice pizza . To pay homage to New York City's favorite cheap slice, we created a tongue-in-cheek pizza protestor costume, then posed with an actual $1 slice.
How to do it: You'll need a couple of blank sheets of poster board to write your own messages. We kept it simple with, "Keep pizza $1" and "Give pizza chance." Bonus points: Posing with an actual $1 slice by a fresh pizza sign.
5. A group of rats
There are more rats scurrying around NYC than ever before, so, uh, join the party, we guess? Seriously, when it comes to New York City wildlife, there's nothing more iconic than the creepy little (actually sometimes not-so-little) vermin the city's waging war on. This one works as a solo costume or a group costume, so have some fun with it.
How to do it: Don all your gray apparel. Then, top off your outfit with some mouse ears, a tail, and gloves ( we found a two-pack on Amazon for $26 ). For props, we posed near a garbage can with a few trash bags. Take it to the next level by making a sign with some of the absolutely wild quotes from the city's most recent press conference about rats, like ... "The rats don't run this city, we do" or "This is not Ratatouille. Rats are not our friends."
Difficulty level: 🎃 🎃
6. Funny Girl
The drama of Broadway's Funny Girl got a lot of attention this summer. Lea Michele—the erstwhile star of TV's Glee and Broadway's Spring Awakening —has taken over the show's leading role of Fanny Brice. We're inspired by her fashion and the history of the show's early-20th-century Ziegfeld Follies look, so we channeled the vintage vibes for this outfit.
How to do it: A red coat and a hat are crucial for this costume. We added a black collared shirt with detailed beading. Put on some black gloves if you've got them and take a photo in soft light.
Difficulty level: 🎃 🎃 🎃
7. The ghost of Two Buck Chuck
When Trader Joe's abruptly closed its wine shop below Union Square this summer, it marked the end of an era for budget booze shoppers. New Yorkers poured out their heartbreak on social media, so in honor of the store, we made this costume an ode to days past.
How to do it: You'll need a few paper bags from Trader Joe's, one to make a top and one to cut into a fringy skirt. We lined the band of the skirt with Moleskine to keep it sturdy and prevent paper cuts. For the top, make sure that the Trader Joe's logo is visible in the front like Superman's "S." Finally, you'll need a bottle of wine to carry with you. If you're heading to a party, bring a full bottle for the host.
Difficulty level: 🎃🎃🎃 🎃
8. Spotted lanternfly
One of the scariest ghouls of the year? The spotted lanternfly.
Don't let this insect's pretty polka dots fool you. It's actually an agricultural menace. Since Halloween is all about the creepy-crawly, we dressed up as this beautiful but damned insect, then snapped photos next to a tree while biting into an apple.
How to do it: Start with a black base layer. The wings are the tough part. To create the wings, we used the non-greasy parts of a pizza box, carefully cutting out a shape that matched the pictures on Google images. Next, add a layer of white paper on top of the wings, cutting it out to the same shape. Grab some colored pencils and start drawing the lanternfly's distinct pattern (this took a WHILE). Finally, carefully tape the wings together with a strong adhesive and affix a ribbon to create a sort-of harness to keep the wings on you. To top it off, we bought a $6 insect headband from Party City.
Difficulty level: 🎃🎃 🎃🎃

Haha the snow globe one is a pretty cool idea but seems like it would be a logistical nightmare every time you need to take it off. I might actually do New York tourist this year. Thanks for the great ideas :)

What a fun article, Sarah. My favourite is the Snow Globe costume but I am not sure if I would personally dress up in it. I might try it on my niece though.
When looking at these photos, I can't stop laughing. This post is fun. Will look back at this post in February, when Carnaval is coming up in the Netherlands! Then it will definitely be useful. Thanks for sharing!
Although I haven't dressed up in years, I do enjoy looking at photos of everyone's costumes! These are all so great! If I was going to dress up this year I would dress up as the new female Dr. Who. She's a world traveler, wouldn't you say?!?!? :)

"I Love New York"
Designer Miguel Adrover
Not on view
The fantastical life of Miguel Adrover, from his childhood on almond farms in the Mediterranean to his rather mysterious friendship with couture genius Alexander McQueen, perfectly complements the poetry and whimsiness of the very garments he constructs. Though he arrived in New York from Majorca in 1990, it was the designer's first official runway effort in 1999 that became both a critical muse and a fashionista's fantasy. His collections exhibit both a love for cross-cultural eclecticism, from Muslim veiling to western quilting techniques, and a fusion of historical elements, drawing from the prudities of the Victorian era and the ostentation of the contemporary New York street in the same stitch. This piece, which was donated to the Costume Institute as a tribute to New York upon his indefinite departure for Madrid in 2004, emerged from a series of collections that paid homage to the recyclability and raw decorousness of New York's fashion world. The dress exhibits an excessively weathered banner of pride that every Big Apple tourist longs to appropriate: "I (heart) NY." The significance of the logo is its pedestrian origins; these cotton tees, produced in every color and size, can be purchased on nearly every popular street corner in lower Manhattan. Quite contrarily, and with wit aplomb, Adrover has imposed an overstated pouf sleeve, layered in confectionary chiffon ruffles onto this spare tee dress. The sleeve shape and style found its climax in twentieth–century high fashion in the gluttonous 1980s, a period of grossly overstated luxury that has its various associations with Reaganite politics and the stark separation of the American economic classes. This fusion of symbology is typical of Adrover, and only serves to enrich the irony of his design as a self-contained symbol of the co-existence of the exclusive elite and the marginalized masses of New York City.

Let’s Keep This Vintage Fashion Boutique Just Between Us
A laid-back shop in Los Angeles is a semi-secret spot for celebrities and costume designers.
By Alexandra Jacobs
Vintage-clothing aficionados are either pawing through piles of polyester looking for that one treasure, arms itching and aching … or paying an obscene amount for something that the passage of time has made fragile, even if it doesn’t have sweat stains (and it might!).
Robyn Goldberg, the owner of the Kit Vintage , shows a glamorous middle way. At her store on Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles, there are just a few racks, but what’s there, to quote Spencer Tracy in “ Pat and Mike ,” is cherce.
With the help of Ms. Goldberg, a special-occasions specialist who also does a brisk bridal business, you will discover the work of unjustly forgotten designers like Mary Ann Restivo , Bill Tice and Luis Estévez among the Vuitton and Versace. “Accessible vintage luxury,” is the goal, she said. “I want someone to be able to come in and take it home and not just wish for it.”
Among her devoted regulars is Lou Eyrich, the costume designer who supplied the much admired outfits for the FX series “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.” These included an ice-blue Swedish couture ball gown for Demi Moore as Ann Woodward and a silk lounge set for Naomi Watts as Babe Paley, both from the Kit Vintage.
“I call her frantic: ‘This is what I need!’ And she sends the perfect Upper East Side elegant dress, perfect satin shine, perfect train,” Ms. Eyrich said on the phone between fittings for another production. “Thank you, Robyn!”
Ms. Goldberg and her husband, Larry Plotitsa (“that sweet, sweet husband,” Ms. Eyrich called him), proprietor with his sister, Natasha Tsimmerman of Platt Boutique Jewelry, have shared approximately 2,000 square feet of retail space for seven years: a mom-and-pop-and-aunt shop that could be the set of its own dramedy.
The businesses are separate but have been complementary ever since one fiancée, who’d come to Mr. Plotitsa for a ring, noticed one of Ms. Goldberg’s finds, a 1970s Saks Fifth Avenue number hand-painted with lions and tigers, and bought it for her engagement party.
“They loved big cats,” Ms. Goldberg said. There are worse quirks.
The couple was sitting on the Platt side of the store on a recent sunny afternoon as their daughter, Edie, 7, played dress-up with a pair of mismatched marabou boudoir mules. (They also have a son, Shaya, 12, and two Boston terriers, Gizmo and Buda.) A liquor cart twinkled dangerously in the corner.
They grew up in Chicago and met in high school but didn’t date till after graduation, when Mr. Plotitsa was toiling for his father in that city’s diamond district, thinking he’d become a bar or club owner.
“Because he was, like, a raver,” Ms. Goldberg said.
“I was in the scene in the ’90s!” Mr. Plotitsa said.
After Ms. Goldberg moved to New York to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology, planning to become a buyer, he visited for a while but then broke up with her on voice mail and ignored her messages.
“What’s it called now? Ghosting.” Ms. Goldberg said.
“I was 19!” Mr. Plotitsa said. “I was like: ‘She’s living there, I’m living here, I’m 19 !’”
Three years later they got back together and have been partners in work and life ever since: finishing each other’s sentences, sharing each other’s customers and encouraging each other’s splurges. “He’s the only person, to this day, that I want to shop with,” Ms. Goldberg said.
She worked for the designer Anna Sui and the laddie magazine Maxim before becoming the fashion editor at Teen People. Mr. Plotitsa contributed a custom-made gold necklace for Nelly, the rapper, to one of her layouts.
“Cut to, the politics of the editorial world starts getting gross,” she said, referring to the publisher’s habit of telling the staff what to shoot. She quit and became a freelance stylist in Los Angeles, with mixed results: “I’m shopping and shopping, and schlepping and schlepping.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Plotitsa got his gemology degree, turned down a job in the estate department of a big department store and, with Ms. Tsimmerman, opened a tiny booth next to a vending machine at the Antiquarius Center, a fancy antiques emporium that has since burned down, before expanding to a bungalow on Robertson Boulevard.
Celebrities began coming in to get bling for their wingdings and have never stopped. Brendan Fraser had on an Art Deco platinum, sapphire and diamond brooch from Platt when he won an Oscar for “Whale” in 2023, and Monica Lewinsky wore earrings and a necklace from the store to this year’s Vanity Fair party .
“People gate-keep us,” Mr. Plotitsa said. “It’s their little secret. We’re priced fair, and they don’t want to share that. We’re not a Maxfield,” the haughty boutique on Melrose Avenue.
The internet’s fame sleuths, however, are not easily deterred. When Angelina Jolie’s daughter, Zahara, wore a gold-trimmed white Grecian gown from the Kit Vintage to the premiere of “Eternals” at the Rome Film Festival in 2021, hashtags bloomed like cherry blossoms in April.
Ms. Goldberg said she appreciates that the Jolies come in to browse themselves. She wrinkles her nose a little at working with celebrity stylists, who often want items for free and can be stingy with sourcing credit. Many red-carpet regulars, anyway, are beholden to their lucrative deals with fashion houses.
And yet modern designers regularly examine the couple’s offerings for inspiration, including John Galliano, whose brand the couple says is one of the most requested these days, over a decade since he was fired from Dior after an antisemitic rant in Paris.
“He’s actually really very nice,” Mr. Plotitsa said. “And we’re Jews.”
With sites like Depop and Etsy, a younger generation has cottoned to the idea that previously worn clothes are not icky or kooky, but ecologically responsible. Many are rolling their eyes at the insane markups of traditional wedding vendors.
One bride-to-be recently spent $600 on a simple silk dress from the Kit that her artist friends could build a theme around at Burning Man; another, saying “I just want drama,” splurged on an open-backed iridescent “taffeta monstrosity” from Donna Karan’s 2005 fall runway for her rehearsal dinner for $2,500.
To properly showcase such treasures, Ms. Goldberg said she “manifested” occupancy of the current store, in a historical landmark building, after seeing a For Lease sign in the window.
“They were signing a cyber cafe,” she said. “I was like, ‘Well, that’s the wrong business for you.’”
