Costa Rica Tourism Market Analysis

The Costa Rica Tourism Market is valued at about USD 300.2 million and is expected to register a CAGR of more than 5% during the forecast period.

In recent years, some key influencers on the travel and tourism industry have been globalization, digitalization, sustainability, and the coronavirus pandemic. Ease of mobility increased awareness of new destinations, and the internet as a source of information and commerce has caused the industry to grow exponentially. When it comes to the industry's future, increased domestic tourism, excellent hygiene conditions, and contactless service are all examples of changing consumer interests due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the first six months of 2023, Costa Rica's tourism industry attracted 1.338,303 visitors, an increase of 19.4% over the same period of 2022 and surpassing the 2019 figures. Tourism in Costa Rica has been on the rise for several reasons, including its high level of safety, its natural environment, and its variety of attractions and activities. Tourism authorities estimate that about 90% of tourism to Costa Rica is by air, with 202,235 travelers arriving by plane in June 2023. Some 142,025 tourists entered via the Juan Santamaría International Airport, while 60,177 arrived via the Guanacaste International Airport, both increasing by 10.1 percent and 5.5 percent, respectively, over the same month last year. Tourism from North America was on the rise, with 21% more visitors from that region than in 2022, according to the ICT. This year, Costa Rica welcomed 792, 944 extra visitors from the US, 148 973 visitors from Canada, and 35,866 visitors from Mexico.

Tourism is one of the fastest-growing economic sectors in Costa Rica, and it's expected to continue to grow in the months ahead. The tourism industry in Costa Rica has the potential to benefit from the increasing global interest in sustainable and responsible tourism. Costa Rica is well-positioned to continue to attract visitors from all over the globe, and tourism will continue to be a major contributor to the country's economic development in the years ahead.

Increase in the Number of International Tourists Arrival is Driving the Market

According to the Costa Rica Tourism Institute, approximately 632,000 tourists traveled through Costa Rica by all routes in the first three months of this year, representing 63% of all international tourism arrivals compared to the start of the year in 2019.

There are signs of recovery in tourism, recreation, and gastronomy. There is an increase in the number of people going to restaurants, resorts, or events like concerts and football games. According to the National Tourism Chamber, the occupancy rate in Sun and Beach Hotels during Easter Week of this year was 93%, while according to the Costa Rican Hotels Chamber, it was up to 98%. In 2022, the number of international tourists visiting Costa Rica increased by more than 74 percent, reaching nearly two and a half million. However, it was still 25 percent lower than the record-breaking three million visitors in 2019. Costa Rica's total visitor spending, including transportation costs, exceeded USD 1.7 billion in 2021. International tourists spent an average of USD 1.5 thousand dollars per trip, accounting for nearly one-fifth of Costa Rica's service exports in 2021.

Tourism-related indirect industries (from air transportation to domestic transportation, restaurant and hotel services, guides, handicraft sales, national park and resort tickets, etc.) demonstrate the importance of maintaining a level playing field for both domestic and international visitors. According to the CBP, tourism employs 245,253 individuals in 2018, which equates to 10.5 % of the EAP population. The direct and indirect impacts of tourism-related activities also affect the recovery of jobs in Costa Rica.

Increase in the Recreational Activities in Costa Rica is Driving the Market

The Costa Rica Outdoor Recreation Facility Construction Industry is one of the most established and fastest-growing industries in the country. Costa Rica is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations due to its abundance of natural beauty and eco-tourism. As a result, the country's popularity for outdoor recreation has skyrocketed, leading to an ever-growing demand for recreational facilities such as outdoor parks, outdoor playgrounds, outdoor sports fields, and more. In addition, Costa Rica has one of the most diverse and varied landscapes in the world, making it an ideal country to develop outdoor recreation facilities.

One of the main reasons for the industry's growth is the rise in leisure activity and recreation spending by Costa Ricans, as well as tourists. With increased disposable income, more people can afford to enjoy outdoor recreation facilities like sports clubs, pools, and more. This has increased private recreational facilities. Costa Rica's government is investing in infrastructure, which has resulted in a rise in public leisure facilities like parks, playgrounds, and more. As the tourism industry grows, so does the number of outdoor recreation hotels and resorts.

Another reason for the industry's growth is the growing population. As Costa Rica's population increases, so does the need for housing and amenities, such as outdoor recreation facilities (ORFs). This has resulted in an increase in residential developments with ORFs. The government's efforts to encourage tourism, the nation's growing population, the growing trend of leisure spending among citizens and tourists, and the increased demand for outdoor recreation facilities are all factors that will continue to drive the growth of this industry. As disposable income continues to rise, so will the number of people using outdoor recreational facilities.

Costa Rican Mothers Face Growing Barriers to Employment

Celebrating mother’s day in costa rica, august gardening in costa rica: working with the rains, la romería in costa rica: from 1635 to now, costa rica grapples with rising human trafficking cases, nearly 1 million tourists have visited costa rica in 2021.

Alejandro Zúñiga

Costa Rica welcomed nearly 1 million tourists across the first 10 months of 2021, according to Tourism Board (ICT) data.

From January through October, the Central American country received 978,676 visitors. That includes 91,292 air arrivals during October, representing 67% of that month’s pre-pandemic figures.

Guanacaste Airport (LIR) in October 2021 handled more tourists (23,459) than the same month in 2019. This represents the first month during which a Costa Rica airport has surpassed its pre-pandemic volume.

“The growth shown to date is truly important for the country because it shows a sustained route of reactivation of the tourism sector,” said Gustavo Segura, Tourism Minister.

“It not only means that more tourists arrive, but it involves job recovery, activation of companies and commercial activity throughout the value chain of the industry in the face of a situation that remains complex at the international and national levels.”

Still, 2021 continues to represent a significant decline for tourism compared to 2019. That year, Costa Rica welcomed about 2.2 million people from January through October.

The majority of visitors in 2021 — nearly 650,000 people — have come from the United States.

Nine airlines offer direct connections between Costa Rica and the United States: Delta, United, Alaska, American, JetBlue, Spirit, Sun Country (seasonally), Frontier and Southwest. All U.S.-based carriers that served Costa Rica before the pandemic have resumed service.

In addition, Avianca announced  new flights between Costa Rica and the United States that will begin later this year.

Tourism is one of Costa Rica’s principal economic drivers. Before the pandemic, it contributed to 8.2% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) and created 9% of the nation’s jobs, according to the ICT.

The  unemployment rate in Costa Rica  is 17.4%, among the region’s highest.

Costa Rica has  eliminated most Covid-19 entry requirements  for vaccinated travelers. However, the Costa Rica tourism sector has warned a vaccine mandate that will begin in early 2022 may impact the industry’s economic recovery.

Promises of happier, healthier living drove tourists to Costa Rica in droves. Now, locals say the Blue Zone lifestyle is dying out.

  • Tourism has spiked in Costa Rica, with visitors trying to get a taste of the Blue Zone lifestyle.
  • But as tourists flood the area, locals say key elements of the Blue Zone life are fading away.
  • Tourists want more amenities, infrastructure, and foods not found in the area, changing local habits.

Insider Today

Tourists are flocking to Costa Rica , with visitors trying to get a taste of the Blue Zone lifestyle that promises better-than-average health and longevity.

And while the country's economy has grown to depend on the tourism industry, locals say the surge in outside influence has resulted in key elements of the Blue Zone 's customs fading away.

Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula is one of five "Blue Zones" known for residents who live longer and healthier lives than others around the world. In this sliver of land in the Central American country, locals' lives have historically centered on strong community ties, purposeful and physical daily work, and a healthy diet of fresh produce and lean proteins.

Longevity researchers attribute these lifestyle habits to residents' lasting wellness. Business Insider previously reported that the average lifespan in the area was 85 years old.

"One of the reasons we came here was because there was so little here, and we really enjoyed the real Costa Rica — the jungle and everything being very local, things like that," Thomas Jones, who has lived in the coastal town of Paquera, at the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, for nearly 20 years, told BI. "Of course, it's never going to stay like that as things progress and there's more people coming into the area, more developments coming up around here."

Once the habits of the Nicoya Peninsula became the subject of researchers' focus, health-conscious tourists quickly followed — and being adjacent to a Blue Zone became a selling point around the country.

Related stories

Tourism in Costa Rica directly accounted for 4.8% of the country's total GDP in 2019, according to the Tourism Satellite Account . In 2021, American tourists made up the biggest market, followed by Europeans from countries including Germany, Spain, and France.

As tourists flock to the country, they demand more amenities, infrastructure, and foods not found in the area, locals told BI. To accommodate the guests, the country is changing — adding more fast-food options, more luxury hotels, and paving new roads — which in turn is changing local habits.

Jones, who runs a tourism company that relies on foreign guests to stay afloat, said it could be challenging to strike a balance between making enough money to live well — and pay his 12 employees — and maintaining the original, rugged charm that drew him and his wife to the country from Norway in 2007.

Juan Gabriel, a guide for Jones' company, Bahia Rica, told BI he grew up on a small island with no electricity and had seen firsthand how Blue Zone tourism had changed his life and that of his family.

"The people, a long time ago, they had to live different; they had horses, they had to get up at 4 in the morning to take care of the cows, and then in the afternoon, they'd finish their day, but they didn't have a lazy life," Gabriel said. "Now, if you can buy it from the supermarket, why not?"

Gabriel said he was grateful for his upbringing, which taught him to be resilient and adaptable — but he said he wouldn't be raising his kids the same way, even though he knew it might be healthier for them.

Blue Zone tourism has become a double-edged sword since locals have grown to rely on tourists for jobs and new development in the region. The industry provides much-needed financial stability, but with that stability comes the sacrifice of traditions that made Costa Rica a longevity hot spot in the first place.

Improved infrastructure means less of a daily grind because of the paved roads and easier access to transportation services, so there's less need to walk — but it also means that the daily physical labor that researchers think leads to a longer life is minimized. The addition of fast food to the Blue Zone area also means there's less of an emphasis on the diet that prioritizes small portions, low sugar, and lean proteins.

Researchers from Stanford have studied the Nicoya Blue Zone. In a 2023 article in Stanford Medicine Magazine , David Rehkopf, an associate professor of epidemiology and population health and of medicine at the Stanford School of Medicine, specifically cited the changes in transportation and the addition of Western foods as reasons the Blue Zone benefits were at risk.

"These people are losing the advantage seen by previous generations," said Luis Rosero-Bixby, a Costa Rican demographer who did research with Rehkopf. "It's not uncommon to see people in Nicoya live to be in their 90s, but we're seeing that number slip back down into the 80s."

Still, if you're in the region, you'll probably see a lot about the Blue Zone as a selling point driving more tourism.

"A lot of people are using it for their business — Blue Zone this, Blue Zone that — I'm sure they know what it means, but the lifestyle is something that's fading, unfortunately, because it was all the old-timers keeping it alive," Jones said. "I think in about 10 years, there's gonna be no more Blue Zone here because the old ones are going to die off, and the young ones don't live the same lifestyle."
