The walled city of Lucca makes a good base for visiting sights in northern Tuscany by train or car. Here are top recommended places for day trips that can be reached within an hour of Lucca .

Villas and Gardens Near Lucca

Many villas were built in the countryside outside the walls of Lucca during the 15th - 17th centuries as country homes for wealthy families. A few of the villas and their gardens are open to visitors and can even be visited by bicycle (rentals available at several shops in a town near the walls).

Bagni di Lucca

Bagni di Lucca is a historic spa center made up of several towns and villages. It's about half an hour train ride to the Bagni di Lucca station in Fornoli. From there you can take a bus toward Lucca Villa to get to Ponte a Serraglio (the spa town) or La Villa (the biggest town) along the river. If you have a car you can explore more of the villages that make up Bagni di Lucca.

Famous for the Leaning Tower and the other magnificent Romanesque monuments on the Piazza dei Miracoli , Pisa is one of the most visited towns in Tuscany. After you see the sights on the square, take some time to wander through the rest of the city, away from the tourists. The train from Lucca to Pisa takes about half an hour.

Montecatini Terme and Montecatini Alto

Montecatini Terme, about half an hour by train, is a historic spa town. Its tree-lined streets and park are pleasant places to walk, it's a good place for shopping, and there are several thermal centers. Don't miss a visit to Terme Tettucio (open May - September). Take the funicular railway up the hill to the medieval village of Montecatini Alto.

Torre del Lago Puccini

Torre del Lago is a small town between Lake Massaciuccoli and the sea. It's famous for its summer Puccini festival in the outdoor theater on the lake. Puccini had a house in Torre del Lago and it's now a museum. There are a couple of restaurants by the lake and during the summer season, you can take a trip on the lake by excursion boat. The best way to get there by public transportation is by bus from Viareggio although some trains stop in town from where you can walk to the lake, about 1 kilometer. It's less than half an hour by car from Lucca.

Viareggio is a seaside town known for its Art Deco architecture and a long line of beach resorts. If you're visiting in the summer and want a day at the beach, this would be the most convenient choice. The train to Viareggio takes less than half an hour. A little farther north along the Versilia coast, you can also visit the art town of Pietrasanta and the famous seaside resort town of Forte dei Marmi by either train or car.

Barga and the Garfagnana

Barga is a picturesque hill town in the less-visited Garfagnana region north of Lucca. Barga has a link to Scotland and you're likely to hear more English spoken than you'd expect in an out of the way place. It's about a 45-minute drive through the scenic countryside. On the way, stop off to see the Devil's Bridge in Borgo a Mozzano and if you want to continue a little further you can visit the medieval town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, the principal town of the region (it's also possible to get to Castelnuovo by train from Lucca).

Corchia Underground Cave and Apuan Alps Park

Monte Corchia, in the Apuan Alps Park, has one of Europe's largest system of caverns . 2-hour guided tours cover about 2 kilometers (including more than 1000 steps), daily in summer and on weekends in spring and fall. The ticket office is in the tiny town of Levigliani. Also in the Apuan Alps Park are many hiking trails.

Pistoia is sometimes called the Little Florence because its compact historic center is loaded with art and architecture. There are 7 museums near the cathedral and the cathedral itself is worth a visit. Although not far from Florence, not so many tourists visit Pistoia. Trains from Lucca take 40 minutes to an hour.

If you're traveling with children they may enjoy a little time at Pinocchio Park . Also in Collodi are Garzoni Gardens, a Baroque garden considered to be one of the best in Tuscany. The medieval hill town above is also picturesque.

It's even possible to visit Florence as a day trip, although it takes longer than an hour (but less than 2 hours) to get there by train. From the Florence train station, you can easily walk to the main sights in the historic center. If you plan to visit the Uffizi Gallery , be sure to book tickets in advance.

Nine fantastic day trips from Lucca you and your kids will love: family-friendly places to see near Lucca for a fun day out and about in Tuscany with kids .

One of the many reasons why I love recommending Lucca as a base for your family adventure in Tuscany is the many day trips you can take from it, with or without a car.

Located in the north of Tuscany and on a well-served train line, Lucca is a great place to explore Florence and Pisa, a nice home base to explore local wineries and it is also a great vantage point to head to the coast.

The stunning beaches of Versilia are nearby, and you can even use Lucca as a jump-off point to Cinque Terre!

In previous articles, I talked about the  best things to do in Lucca with kids . Today, I want to expand on that and talk about the many beautiful places you can visit as day trips from Lucca, with the family, of course!

The best day trips from Lucca for families chart

The best family-friendly day trips from lucca with kids – our top picks, firenze / florence.

If you want to visit Florence but do not fancy staying in a big city, you’ll be happy to hear that you can easily reach it from Lucca and spend the day.

Florence is rich with things to see, and you could easily spend days here without running out of things to do. However, Florence city center is compact, and even with a day trip, you can cover a lot of ground!

Coming by train from Lucca in the morning, you can take a stroll to Santa Maria Novella, see Florence’s Duomo, and walk the famous Piazza della Signoria and Ponte Vecchio.

You can treat your kids to a ride on the carousel in Piazza della Repubblica, pop into the fun Leonardo da Vinci Interactive Museum and even take a bus or a taxi up to Piazzale Michelangelo and catch the most famous view over Florence and the Arno River!

Trains between Lucca and Florence depart regularly; the journey takes about 1.5h or less and costs less than 10 Euro per person.

A very easy and very satisfying day out, in a city center so beautiful it is, as a whole UNESCO World Heritage Site!

A visit to Pisa is a great treat for kids.

The leaning tower is exciting for children and while the large number of visitors makes the city more touristy in feel than many others in Tuscany, the beauty of Piazza dei Miracoli makes a visit worth it also for parents.

A visit to Pisa inevitably focuses on the tower / Piazza dei Miracoli, the only part of historical Pisa that has survived the shelling during the II World War.

Here, you can see the tower, the Duomo, the Baptistry, and the stunning Camposanto, all developing around Piazza dei Miracoli, an incredible sight!

Nearby, you can also see beautiful Piazza dei Cavalieri and you can rest and have lunch in one of the many restaurants off the piazza (Much cheaper than the ones on the piazza, worth the short walk!).

Should you want a bit of greenery, you can also visit the pretty Botanical Gardens, only a few minutes walk from the tower.

The train between Lucca and Pisa goes several times a day (up to twice per hour), the journey takes about 30 minutes and the cost is less than 5 Euro per person.

Viareggio is one of Italy’s best-known seaside resort towns and a trendy summer getaway with locals and foreigners alike.

Blessed with large, long sandy beaches and a beautiful town center with Liberty-style architecture unique in the area, Viareggio is easy to reach from Lucca by train and a great place to spend a day between the beach, the seaside passeggiata and the beautiful shops of this elegant town.

The train between Lucca and Viareggio runs several times a day (up to one per hour at busy times), only takes about 20 minutes and costs around 6 euro per person.

If you have a car, as well as Viareggio, you can visit a few more of the best beaches near Lucca .

Cinque Terre

The area of Cinque Terre is lovely to visit with kids and very easy to reach from Lucca, which is less than 2 hours away from La Spezia, the getaway town to the beautiful Cinque Terre villages .

The best way to get there is by train, via Pisa and then La Spezia.

At first glance, you may think the lack of a direct train is daunting, but the journey is straightforward. The trains are frequent and easy to use and you’ll have no problem navigating the local stations.

To give you an idea of how easy it is, when I went to Cinque Terre with the kids last summer, alone, we got off the train in La Spezia and the one to Cinque Terre was literally in front of us, waiting to depart in the following five minutes!

All we had to do was get off one train and get onto the other: it couldn’t have been easier!

If you can, I highly recommend staying in Cinque Terre for at least one night (two is even better) but if you only have a day or do not fancy changing accommodations, this is a great day trip from Lucca with kids!

Tenute di Badia, a family-friendly winery (car needed)

You don’t have to renounce wine tasting and vineyard hopping near Lucca because you have kids: you can go with them to lovely Tenute di Badia!

A family-friendly vineyard and winery just to the south of Lucca, Tenute di Badia organizes tasting in their beautiful cellars and involves the kids serving them juice so that they can be part of the tasting experience.

This is one of the easiest day trip from Lucca for families who want a wine experience in one of the best wine regions in the world.

Pistoia Zoo

If you are looking for something just for kids, for a day when sightseeing is not in the cards anymore, then a day trip from Lucca to Pistoia zoo may be what you need!

Pistoia Zoo is a large open-air zoo with over 550 endangered animals from all over the world.

The zoo prides itself on its conservation efforts and it’s a great place for kids to get familiar with giraffes, pygmy hippos, red pandas, lemurs, tigers, lions and more.

The park is open every day (Including Christmas and Ferragosto!), and it is easy to reach by taxi or by catching bus 59 from the Pistoia train station.

Tenuta Chiudendone, family-friendly day in the country with cooking and a pool

One of the best ways to enjoy Tuscany is to spend a day in a beautiful country home, tasting the local food and wine and letting the kids splash in the pool. You can do this by spending a day in Tenuta Chiudendone!

Located between Florence and Pisa, only about 1h by car from Lucca, Tenuta Choudendone offers a one-day experience perfect for families with kids of all ages.

It includes a walk in the vineyard and olive, grove, a cooking class, lunch and time to kick back and relax in the large estate outdoor area.

You’ll need a car to get her, or you can avail of their help to reach them by train via Florence. Either way, you are guaranteed a great time!

Montecatini Terme

If you love hot pools and thermal baths , then a day trip to Montecatini Terme is a great day trip from Lucca you can take with the kids.

Montecatini Terme is a famous thermal town, with several thermal spas offering wellness and health treatments, one of them open to kids: Terme Redi!

Terme Redi has indoor pools that are great for all ages (if you have kids under 2, ask the staff as they recommend only short baths at that age) and area a great place to bob in water, especially if in the area in winter, when outdoor fun may be limited.

Parco Pinocchio, Collodi

Parco Pinocchio is a peculiar park for kids devoted, as the name suggests, to Pinocchio, born in this area!

The park defines itself as a ‘theme park,’ and in a way this is correct, as Pinocchio is the central theme of the experience.

However, this is not a Disneyland kind of place, but a more traditional, almost vintage sort of kids’ park, suited especially to little children who can tap into the magic of an almost entirely tech-free experience.

The park is a large, green, shaded area with Pinocchio-inspired installations and outdoor toys.

As you walk along its paths, you can step into the mouth of the whale, tiptoe into the house of the Turquoise Fairy or spend time playing with the giant outdoor chess board or getting active on climbing frames and zipline courses.

Near Pinocchio park, you can also with the stunning Giardini di Villa Garzoni, that are lovely for a walk and have a butterfly house kids are likely to love.

This is a great day trip from Lucca for little kids and nostalgic parents who want to tap into an old-school, imagination-driven children’s fairy tale.

15 Best Things to Do in Lucca (Italy)

Lucca is a historical city located in Tuscany on the western coast of Italy – this city lies in close proximity to Pisa and is known as the city of a hundred churches due to its large amount of historical religious structures. Lucca is known throughout Italy for its fantastic medieval city walls that still encircle most of the historic old town.

Originally this city was founded by the Etruscans and was then a Roman colony around 180 BC. During the Roman era, Lucca served as an important meeting place for Julius Caesar and Crassus. In later years, the city was an independent republic for nearly 500 years as part of feudal Italy. During the 19th century, Lucca was conquered by Napoleon, and it finally became part of Unified Italy in 1860. Today, Lucca is a popular tourist destination and has close ties with Pisa.

For those who love historical architecture and Medieval constructs, Lucca is a true haven – as mentioned above, it is known as the city of a hundred churches boasting such buildings as Lucca Cathedral and San Michele in Foro. Furthermore, the extensive city walls show how many Middle Age settlements would have been defended. Aside from the architecture, Lucca also has some fantastic museums, gorgeous public squares and a fine selection of restaurants and bars.

1. Lucca Cathedral

Located in the historic old town in the Piazza San Martino, the Duomo is a truly impressive structure and is renowned throughout Italy for its stunning façade and design.

The front façade features a series of opulent archways and an ornate portico framing the front doors.

Construction was begun during the 11th century and the church was re-designed in its current form during the 14th century Renaissance.

Next to the church is the immense bell tower that is only half finished – the lower half remains exposed brick and creates a contrast to the white walls of the top two levels.

Inside the cathedral, there is a plethora of beautiful artwork and one of the main features is the sublime shrine of the Sacred Face of Lucca.

2. Piazza dell Anfiteatro

This Square is exactly as the name describes and was once a Roman Amphitheatre – the elliptical shape is still evident even if none of the original structure is.

The buildings surrounding the square have been created in the same elliptical shape and are all different heights and colours – the effect is quite astounding and the shades of yellow, cream and white create an inviting open space.

Furthermore, most of the houses have green shutters to create a sense of uniform.

Within the piazza there is also a series of high quality restaurants and cafes all with outdoor seating – a meal within this beautiful square will prove to be a memorable one.

3. Take a walk on the historic city walls

Surrounding the old centre of Lucca is a virtually complete complex of city walls – this defensive network was constructed during the Renaissance and stands to this day.

It is one of the most complete and well preserved fortifications in Italy and you can walk around the whole city through a series of well-maintained promenades.

At strategic intervals there are 11 bastions such as the bulwark of San Martino and the Porta San Pietro.

A complete footpath connects each bastion – the Via delle Mura Urbane; this footpath is lined with trees and stretches for some 4km total length.

Consider walking along this footpath and admiring the old city walls – also walk down to the lower levels to see the walls from the ground and look at the fantastic craftsmanship of the bastions.

4. San Michele in Foro

Another stunning church in the centre of Lucca, the Basilica di San Michele in Foro features a unique front façade that is not like any other in the city.

The original church was first mentioned in the 8th century but gained its current form during the 13th century.

Above the main arches of the façade are four rows of ornate arches and columns that feature a number of different colours and designs.

Furthermore, above each tow of arches there is some beautiful artwork depicting various wild animals.

The level of detail is quite astounding from the carvings on the columns, to the stonework around the rose windows.

The interior of the church contains some important artworks by Luca della Robbia and Filippno Lippi.

5. Orto Botanico Comunale di Lucca

In the south eastern corner of the historic old town you can find the beautiful Communal Botanical Gardens of Lucca.

These gardens are expansive and cover two of the bastions on the city walls.

Established in 1820 by the Duchess of Parma, the gardens are extensive and feature some beautiful species of trees, plants and flowers.

Furthermore, there are several greenhouses, an arboretum, a herbarium and several ponds and water features.

Each section of the gardens is beautifully maintained and the variety of colours and species is wonderful to behold.

6. Torre delle Ore

The Torre delle Ore has served as both a defensive fortification and a clock tower during its 700 year history.

Created in the 14th century, the tower was part of a private structure and was originally used for protection.

As time progressed, the need for defense lessened and the tower was turned into a horological clock tower instead.

Today it is possible to climb a series of stairs to reach the top of the tower for unrivalled views of the city of Lucca.

From here you can see the many other towers within the city and such landmarks as the Cathedral and Basilica of San Frediano.

7. Acquedotto del Nottolini

To the south of Lucca, you can find a marvel of architectural achievement in the form of the Aqueduct of Nottolini.

This epic structure was once used to carry water from the mountains into the city and contained 400 arches made from stone stretching for 3km.

Today the aqueduct stands in its entirety and you can follow the structure from its beginning at the Temple cistern, through to its end at the Parco dell’Acquedotto.

The surrounding landscape is beautiful and the aqueduct is truly a wonderful construct to behold.

8. Guinigi Tower

Lucca has several interesting historical towers, but none are as interesting as the strange Torre Guinigi – this is the most important and iconic tower in Lucca and is known for its rooftop garden.

Created in the 14th century, this tower is a fantastic example of Romanesque/Gothic architecture and features an exposed brick design with a series of arched windows.

Standing at 45m high, this tower dominates the skyline and can be seen from many places within the city centre.

The most notable feature is not the height however, it is the garden that sits at the very top – this garden contains some beautiful Holm Oak trees that symbolize rebirth and have become an icon of Lucca.

9. Piazza Napoleone

Located only a short distance from the Piazza dell Anfiteatro, the Square of Napoleon is another fantastic open space within the historic town centre of Lucca and features some important buildings.

To the left hand side of the square you can find the Ducale Palace with its impressive front façade.

In front of the palace is an ornate white statue of Maria Luisa which is in turn framed on three sides by a series if luscious trees.

Other notable structures surrounding the square include the Giglio Theatre, the Museo del Risorgimento and the Prefettura Di Lucca.

10. Museum of Villa Mansi

Approximately 25 minutes to the north east of Lucca you can find the historical Villa Mansi.

This villa was constructed during the 16th century by the wealthy Benedetti family and was extended in later years to include a fantastic landscape garden.

The villa itself has an interesting front façade complete with an ornate staircase and an arched portico.

Furthermore the grounds of the villa are extensive and contain a pond, several stunning flower arrangements and a series of marble statues.

Tours are available of the villa and this is a great way to spend an afternoon in the gorgeous Italian sun.

11. Basilica of San Frediano

The Basilica of San Frediano is yet another sublime religious structure in the heart of Lucca.

This building is renowned for its front façade that contains a beautiful mosaic and its impressive ornate bell tower.

During the 14th century the mosaic was added to the front of the church and has remained in remarkable condition to this day.

Depicted in the mosaic is the Assension of Christ – you can clearly see the central figure of Christ surrounded by angels and his apostles – the detail and colours are simply fantastic.

The ornate decoration continues inside the church and a notable feature includes a finely decorated 12th century font complete with stone carvings.

12. Enjoy a fine meal at Da Pasquale

For an evening of fine dining, great service and excellent drinks, the Da Pasquale restaurant in the centre of Lucca is one of the most inviting places to visit.

Located on the Via del Moro in the heart of the old town, this unassuming establishment benefits from fantastic hosts and high-quality dishes.

The restaurant specializes in seafood but also offers some wonderful Italian dishes such as ravioli and other pastas.

If you enjoy a glass of wine with your meal, the host will help you choose a suitable bouquet from their extensive selection.

The quality of the food, the attentiveness of the staff and the atmosphere will create a magical evening.

13. Sample some fine wine at Vinni Liquori Vanni

For wine lovers there is no other place in Lucca to visit than the Vinni Liquori Vanni.

On entering this establishment you may think you have simply wondered into a restaurant and indeed the food served here is high quality and delicious.

The real treat however is tucked away in the expansive cellar beneath your feet.

This establishment had a huge wine cellar packed full with a staggering amount of different vintages – if you ask the staff they will take you below and let you peruse the catalogue – if you are lucky you can also have a few samples or even partake in a wine tasting session.

Vinni Liquori Vanni is a wonderful place and the staff are extremely knowledagble – for wine connoisseurs this establishment is an absolute must!

14. Take a day trip to Pisa

A trip to Lucca would not be complete without visiting the historical city of Pisa – these two cities are only 17km apart and have great transport links.

You can reach Pisa in less than 30 minutes using the regular train or bus service, or even by simply driving there.

Pisa has a plethora of beautiful structures and its location on the River Arno means that it has some fantastic photographic opportunities too.

The main attraction is undoubtedly the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Piazza del Miracole – this complex contains the leaning tower, the magnificent cathedral, the unfinished baptistery and the monumental cemetery.

Aside from this area, Pisa also has a series of interesting museums and galleries.

15. Parco Alpi Apuane

The Apuane Alpine Park is a vast area of natural beauty that contains the Apuan Alps mountain range in the northern part of Tuscany.

This region is located approximately one hour to the north of Lucca further up the coast and is a fantastic place to explore.

Notable mountain peaks include Monte Pisanino, Monte Tambura, Pania della Croce and Monte Sagro.

This region is well known for its exquisite marble, dramatic landscapes and hiking and climbing opportunities.

Points of interest within this park include Mt. Forato, the ancient marble quarries, the stunning Lipu Oasis and the Casola Museum.

What to know about visiting Lucca, Italy

Located in northern Italy in the Tuscany region, the city of Lucca is famously known for its well-preserved Renaissance walls. These former defensive walls surround the historic old town while also providing some of the best vantage points of the city.

Once you enter the city walls, you’ll find charming pedestrian cobblestone streets, lively piazzas with a fine selection of restaurants, and beautiful churches and cathedrals.

The historic Old Town area is relatively small and easy to explore in a day without a car. The capital of the province bearing the same name, the city of Lucca’s population is just under 90,000 people.

Lucca is also a great base to explore central and northern Tuscany.

You’ll have easy access to bigger cities like Florence and Pisa while also experiencing the small town Tuscan charm. It’s also a worthy day trip to add to your itinerary from any of those cities or even on your way to Cinque Terre .

How to get to Lucca Italy

For the purposes of this one day Lucca itinerary, we’ll assume you’re arriving by train. But you could also drive or even cycle to Lucca.

Lucca is a little over an hour West of Florence by train, on the way to the Mediterranean beach towns of Italy. It’s just 30 minutes from Pisa by train. The nearest airports to Lucca are Pisa and Florence.

If you are arriving to Lucca by car, parking is cheaper and more easily available outside the city walls.

Lucca is a small and compact city. You’ll have no problem getting around by simply walking since many of the streets in the city center are pedestrian streets. Another great alternative would be to bike around.

For public transportation, you can use the bus but only a few go through the center because of the narrow streets. For those traveling to Lucca by car, keep in mind that driving within the city center is mostly limited to locals with permits. It’s best to park your car outside the city walls.

Best Things to Do in Lucca Italy on a Day Trip

Explore Lucca by bicycle

One of the best ways to explore the city center is by biking. The city is quite compact, meaning you can easily see all the landmarks in a day, especially if you get around faster with a bicycle.

There are several tours available but you can also opt to do a self-guided tour by just renting a bicycle.

Walk around Lucca’s walled fortress

The historic walls surrounding the city were originally built to protect the city. They were built in the mid-1600s and early 1800s and are still intact today.

Now the walls are not only a valuable historical landmark but provide people with many spots to relax, walk, and cycle. You’ll even find some cafes along the path.

We enjoyed walking the fortress loop path for exercise. It’s about 3 miles around.

Pass through Porta San Pietro

Porta San Pietro is one of the gateways to the historical walls of the city that’s nearest the train station. It has two side arches that serve as pedestrian passageways while the main arch is for vehicles.

In the center of the arches, you’ll find a shield with the coat of arms of St. Peter and an inscription of the motto of Lucca “Libertas.”

Spend an afternoon at Piazza dell’Anfiteatro

Piazza dell’Anfiteatro is a public square ( piazza in Italian) filled with cafes and restaurants perfect for dining al fresco.

The round piazza can be reached through several arched entrances inside the buildings surrounding it. You can actually see a cross carved into the central tile of the square that points to the four gateways of the square.

This is one of the most unique and iconic sights in Lucca.

Catch an event at Piazza Napoleone

Piazza Napoleone is one of the city’s most historically significant squares. It was built by Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi during her rule and then dedicated to her brother Napoleon.

This piazza is bordered by the Palazzo Ducale, an elegant row of sycamore trees, shops, and cafes. The square is commonly used as a venue for concerts and cultural events such as the Lucca Summer Festival.

Admire the architecture of Chiesa di San Michele in Foro

Chiesa di San Michele in Foro is a Catholic church built over the remains of an ancient Roman forum.

It has a beautiful and intricate facade made up of loggias, a large series of sculptures, inlays, and arcades. It sits in the bustling town square of Piazza San Michele.

Enjoy Piazza San Michele

Piazza San Michele gets its name from the church of San Michele, mentioned above, the main landmark of the square. This is a central piazza in Lucca and a popular gathering place.

The piazza is bordered by medieval buildings with round arches and large windows. In one corner you’ll find the Palazzo Pretorio, another beautiful example of Renaissance architecture in the city.

Visit the Puccini Museum in Piazza Cittadella

Piazza Cittadella is a smaller and quieter square that was the home of the famous composer Giacomo Puccini, which has now been turned into a museum complex.

Inside Puccini Museum you’ll find priceless objects like the piano where he used to compose some of his early work as well as paintings, photographs, sketches, and signed scores.

Do some shopping in Via Fillungo

Via Fillungo is one of the most popular streets that runs through Lucca’s historic center. It’s a long, irregular pedestrian street lined with many shops.

While walking, stop by the boutiques and small shops to pick up gifts, clothing, or grab a bite in a classic trattoria.

Climb the Guinigi Tower for city views

Guinigi Tower is a Romanesque-Gothic tower standing at almost 150 feet with a total of 233 steps to reach the top. It’s known for the tall oak trees that grow on top of the tower.

The entrance to climb the tower is on Via Sant’Andrea and requires a fee (€5 at the time of this writing). 

From the top, you’ll get scenic views of the city and the surrounding mountains.

Explore Piazza San Martino

Piazza San Martino is named after the San Martino Cathedral, whose asymmetrical facade dominates the entire piazza.

The cathedral has an interesting feature: a mysterious labyrinth sculpted into one of the supporting pillars.

The piazza is usually used to host cultural events, like an antique market that happens every month.

Roam the gardens of Palazzo Pfanner

Palazzo Pfanner is a palace located just a few minutes away from Via Fillungo. It has been converted into a garden and museum that’s open to the public.

The garden has a rich variety of flowers and plants as well as well-kept hedges that contribute to the geometrical beauty of the garden.

Admire the art in the Museum of Villa Mansi

The Museum of Villa Mansi is one of the main art museums of the city. It mainly showcases tapestry collections and post-19th century art.

The museum itself is housed in a Baroque palace belonging to the Mansi family and features grand decorations that are still in place.

Where to Stay in Lucca Italy

If you’re planning to stay more than one day in Lucca, we highly recommend staying within the historic city walls.

We were fortunate to find a cute, clean, and central second story apartment overlooking a gelateria. It has one bedroom, private bath, seating area, and small kitchen.

We chose this location because it’s a short distance from the train station so it wasn’t too far to walk with our luggage. It worked out great!

If you’re looking for a small town in Tuscany but that still has a lot of things to do and see, then Lucca is a must-add to your Italy itinerary. We were pleasantly surprised that we hadn’t heard more about Lucca before!

The Leaning Tower of Pisa

When in Italy, snapping a photo holding up the tower is simply a must-do! On your first stop of the day, you'll experience the great Leaning Tower of Pisa and will have up to 3.5 hours of free time to explore this historic city.

Built in the 12th century celebrating victory after a conquest of Palermo, medieval Pisa was a powerful city-state. Unaware of the lack of stability on the marshy hill, the great tower took over 200 years to build but was not intended to be at an angle. Now reinforced to maintain at a stable tilt, the Leaning Tower has become one of Italy's most famous sites.

Had it stayed straight up, few would visit the impressive landmark today. Experience the Tower in person, taking in the grandeur and uniqueness of this accidental world icon.

Pisa Cathedral and the Piazza dei Miracoli

Built along with the Tower over 800 years ago, Pisa is centered around the Piazza dei Miracoli. Translated to the "field of miracles" in English, the grand square of Pisa is an impressive locale on its own. During your bus journey to Pisa, your trip leader will explain its rich history and its importance to the city, so you'll have a little context as you admire the beautifully constructed Renaissance-era architecture that surrounds the square.

Across the square from the Leaning Tower, visit the great Cattedrale di Pisa—one of Italy's most impressive churches. Alongside the cathedral, the stunning Baptistery and Monumental Cemetery are also sights to behold.

Lunch in Pisa

Although lunch isn't included in the tour price, Pisa is home to many wonderful local restaurants and it's a great chance to experience some authentic Tuscan cuisine (and maybe some wine too!). If you'd like some recommendations on where to eat, your trip leader will be happy to help.

Lucca—Tuscany's Most Beautiful Town?

From Pisa, you'll take a short ride through vineyards and riverbeds to Lucca. Protected by its well-preserved medieval walls, the colorful stucco and cobbled squares are unfiltered Tuscan magnificence.

You'll have up to 2.5 hours of free time to explore this enchanting little city. Head through the alleyways and piazzas of old town Lucca and head uphill for ultimate view above the city's ceramic rooftops. Though less visited than its leaning compatriot, Lucca's Guinigi Tower dominates the Lucchese skyline and is a great comparison to the tower in Pisa.

After strolling past the antique shops, ancient streets, and beautiful piazzas that make so many people fall in love with Lucca, we know what will make your trip to the city truly memorable. Before heading back to Florence, make sure you try the Luccan specialty, Buccellato. Sold in bakeries throughout the city, this delicious ring-shaped cake is perfect for your afternoon coffee, completing this wonderful Tuscan day trip.
