For the best affordable tropical destinations, plan where and when you want to visit and you can reap huge savings Stocksy

Sun-soaked beaches and colorful coral reefs – even the cheapest tropical vacations seem to have it all. Here's where to go.

It doesn't matter what kind of getaway you can dream up – from catching waves and trying out water sports to hiking through the rainforest to crystal-clear waterfalls – cheap tropical vacation spots can offer it all and more.

Between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, 36% of the earth's landmass has a tropical climate, providing a multitude of enticing destinations as diverse as Australia and Bali, Thailand and Colombia , and many parts of Africa . For the best affordable tropical destinations, plan where and when you want to visit and you can reap huge savings – and not just on last-minute deals.

From white-sand shorelines in Southeast Asia to scuba diving in Central America , here are 12 cheap tropical destinations that get you access to paradise (without ever hurting your pocket).

1. Palawan, the Philippines

With 7641 islands in total, the Philippines is among the most affordable places for a tropical escape. Palawan , in the nation's southwest, has 1780 islands in its archipelago alone. The region teems with thundering waterfalls, huge caves, phenomenal snorkeling at WWII wrecks and coral reefs, and offers swimming with whale sharks in turquoise waters as well as some of the cheapest scuba diving anywhere in the world. Idyllic El Nido is the jumping-off point for island hopping aboard a bangka (motorized outrigger) to translucent lagoons and hidden beaches framed by karst limestone cliffs.

The pure waters provide a natural bounty of prawns, crab and other crustaceans and fish; look out for danggit lamayo (dried rabbitfish marinated in vinegar, crushed garlic and peppercorn). Staying in a bahay kubo (thatched bamboo shack with woven rattan walls), homestay, hostel or budget hotel are all low-cost options; you can also get good deals on resorts outside peak season (March to May), though some activities close during the June to October wet season.

2. Goa, India

Think budget travel and India will often come to mind, and Goa is a tropical potpourri of Indian and Portuguese cultures. India 's smallest state's least crowded, most pristine beaches, such as Palolem and secluded Butterfly Beach , are in the south, with glowing topaz-hued sunsets over the Arabian Sea. Water activities include kayaking, parasailing and dolphin-spotting trips.

In the dense jungle, wildlife sanctuaries such as Cotigao are home to civets, gaurs, pangolins, leopards, monkeys and giant Indian squirrels, and plantations grow cashews and spices like turmeric, pepper, vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon. Colorful markets sell these and other local specialties such as the cashew-based feni spirit, as well as dishes such as seafood thalis (with rice, fish curries, fried fish, pickles and flatbread) and garlicky, vinegary pork vindaloo, along with cheap clothes and handicrafts.

Guesthouses, hostels, beachside bungalows and resorts offer affordable rates. Much of Goa's beachside accommodation closes completely between May to September during the monsoon; March to April and October to November are prime times to avoid peak-season prices and crowds.

A picturesque beach scene under a clear blue sky. The sandy shore gently meets the calm turquoise waters, where a few small boats are anchored, bobbing with the waves.

3. Bahías de Huatulco, Mexico

Forget Cabo San Lucas or Playa del Carmen City in Mexico. In southeastern Oaxaca on Mexico 's Pacific coast, Bahías de Huatulco is a unique and affordable eco escape. Its nine bays are home to 36 beaches. Santa Cruz’ emerald-green waters are just south of commercial hub La Crucecita, where you can arrange sailing and scuba excursions, and rent equipment including Jet Skis and kayaks. La Bocana is renowned for surfing and pre-Hispanic mud baths. Maguey has gorgeous white sand and snorkeling amid coral, rays and turtles. It's part of the Parque Nacional Huatulco, with awesome hiking, biking and horse riding, and abundant wildlife including black iguanas, armadillos and dwarf porcupines. Up in the mountains, you can visit waterfalls and coffee plantations.

Minimize costs by dining on super-fresh seafood and local specialties like tlayudas (corn tortillas topped with black beans, pork fat and cheese) from rustic comedores (food stalls or basic dining rooms). For accommodations, stay in rooms in private homes, simple hotels, or low-rise resorts and villas outside peak-season holidays (Christmas, New Year and around Easter) in the November to April dry season. Prices drop lowest in the wet season (May to October), though some places close in September and October.

Many people enjoying the crystal clear water of an artificial lagoon in Cairns, in the Far North region of Queensland, Australia

4. Far North Queensland, Australia

World Heritage rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef in Far North Queensland , Australia. Bordered by sugarcane fields, its gateway city, Cairns , may not have a beach (compensated for by a sand-fringed artificial swimming lagoon on the reclaimed foreshore) but it's the launching pad for reef trips, such as coral cay Green Island , and hinterland excursions including nearby village Kuranda , with artsy, hippie markets beneath the rainforest canopy.

Cairns makes a great budget-friendly base in Australia with a lively hostel scene, family-friendly motels and resorts, and bargain drinking and dining options, including tropical-fruit-filled market Rusty's and high-spirited happy hours at Cairns’ bars and pubs. For a beachside stay, try Trinity Beach and Clifton Beach, both just north of the city. April to May and September to October, either side of the peak dry season, are ideal times for an affordable tropical holiday.

5. Lombok, Indonesia

Ringed by pearl-white, coral-pink and black volcanic sand beaches, Lombok is a fantastic place for an active tropical vacation. In the south , reefs, inlets and bays such as Pantai Mawi provide world-class surf breaks. Climbing through the jungle to sacred Gunung Rinjani ,  Indonesia 's second-highest volcano, is a multiday adventure. Easier treks include spectacular waterfalls such as Air Terjun Sindang Gila . Offshore, between Lombok and its famous neighbor, Bali, the Gili Islands – Gili Trawangan (‘Gili T’), a backpacker favorite for its moonlight parties; traditional Gili Meno; and laid-back Gili Air – are blissfully free from motorized transport.

On Lombok and the Gilis, you can eat cheaply and deliciously at warungs (small, simple eateries) sizzling up skewered-meat satays and grilling fish over coconut-shell charcoal. Beach huts, hostels and bungalows all offer affordable accommodations. The wet season, from October to April, is the cheapest time to go (especially if you skip the busy Christmas holidays).

6. Barbados, the Caribbean

When it comes to the best tropical vacations on a budget, Barbados is one of the most affordable all-rounder destinations in the Caribbean . All of its sugar-sand beaches are public, even in the west along its flashy Platinum Coast. Strolling distance from its architectural treasure of a capital, Bridgetown, you can snorkel with seahorses, turtles and rays from Brownes Beach , or paddle out on an SUP or kayak.

Surfing is epic off Bathsheba on the wild Atlantic-facing east coast; Freights Bay, in the south, has gentler waves. The south and east are typically the most economical places to base up. Save money by picking up fresh produce at markets and seeking out cheap bites like cutters (filled salt-bread sandwiches) from roadside stalls and rum shops.

Reggae bands play free gigs all over the island. Next to the fish market, diving into mountains of grilled fish and sides accompanied by ice-cold beers and DJ tunes at Oistins Fish Fry is an unmissable island experience. Barbados’ location outside the hurricane belt gives you a bigger window to visit (mid-April to June and November to mid-December hit the sweet spot for great weather outside the peak Christmas-to-Easter period).

7. Vanua Levu, Fiji

Wind down to “island time” in the South Pacific on Vanua Levu . Fiji 's second-largest island is an unspoiled slice of tropical paradise with white-sand beaches, coconut palms and fragrant frangipanis. Underwater, dive sites such as Rainbow Reef and Namena Marine Reserve have kaleidoscopic coral reefs with marine creatures including hawksbill and green sea turtles. Vanua Levu's rugged interior shelters waterfalls, swimming holes and highland villages.

You can feast cheaply on dishes like kokoda (raw fish marinated in coconut cream, tomato and lime, accompanied by rice) and banana-leaf-wrapped fish, meat and vegetables cooked in a lovo (underground oven), and experience Fijian hospitality in a traditional bure (thatched hut), local guesthouse, hotel or budget resort. Prices are lowest during the warm November-to-April wet season.

8. Ko Wai and Bang Saphan Yai, Thailand

For decades, Thailand dealt in a special kind of island paradise: remote, little-visited beaches with basic waterfront bamboo bungalows on fluffy, white sands – and little else. (Alex Garland's The Beach wasn't far from the truth.) Then, in 2004, a tsunami hit the Andaman Sea and swept away swathes of Thailand's southwestern coasts. Hotels replaced bungalows. Travelers poured in.

Still, even with new all-inclusive resorts on some islands, Thailand is one of the cheapest tropical places to travel. To find that Thailand of old, head for Ko Wai, a tiny fleck of white in the Ko Chang Archipelago with dirt-cheap beach huts, budget guesthouses and pure turquoise waters. Alternatively, Bang Saphan Yai on the upper gulf mainland has a halo of golden beaches, traditional bamboo huts and sublime sunsets. The quietest months to visit are April to June. So if you fancy an early summer vacation, you can get cheap accommodations and coral reefs all to yourself.

9. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Cheaper than its Caribbean neighbors, the Dominican Republic has everything you could want from the best tropical places: gleaming beaches, arching palm trees, countless waterfalls, bays, coves and budget boat rental – plus mangrove lagoons, windswept dunes and plenty of hiking. It's home to Pico Duarte, the highest peak in the Caribbean.

One of the ways to economize in the Dominican Republic is to stay in one of the money-saving, waterfront-facing all-inclusive resorts on the island. Punta Cana on the eastern tip has these mega-resorts by the bucketload and they also have access to the country's best beaches. But don't let their budget beers make you miss the capital Santo Domingo : the capitaleños know how to get down and the city has plenty of cheap places to eat, drink and party.

10. Unguja (Zanzibar Island), Zanzibar

Africa punches well above the rest when it comes to tropical vacations but few knock your sunglasses off quite like Zanzibar Island (officially Unguja). Cinematic coral reefs surround Tanzania 's Indian Ocean crown jewel as colorful nudibranchs, leaf fish and flutters of seahorses swim temptingly off the shoreline.

The beaches are some of the world's best, with sand as soft as quilts, swaying coconut palms, beaming sunshine and very little else. Swimmable Kendwa, the widest beach on the island, is the main draw, but for crowd-free coastlines and sublime shades of turquoise, seek out Pongwe on the east coast or sweltering Jambiani to the southeast – two of the most laid back tropical places to visit in Africa.

11. Southern Mozambique, Mozambique

Ribbons of pink-blushed sand weave around the forested edges of southern Mozambique , one of the least expensive tropical vacations in this part of Africa. People have dug this tropical paradise for centuries – from the early spice traders and pirates to backpackers and now high-end tourists who chill on resort sun loungers along the Bazaruto Archipelago .

Between Tofo and Barra, Mozambique has some of the most startling stretches of pillowy-soft sand in the whole of Africa. With snorkeling safaris around coral reefs, cheap fishing charters, and affordable day boat rentals that glide through the iridescent Indian Ocean, this is a country that slows the heart rate and helps the worries of life subside – which is all you want from a cheap tropical holiday.

12. Providencia Island and Playa Blanca, Colombia

Ecuador used to be among the best cheap tropical vacations but as unrest puts the country out of the equation, those looking for a budget South America getaway should head for Colombia instead. Closer to Nicaragua than mainland Colombia, Providencia Island isn't easy to get to (you'll need to get on a tiny 20-seater plane or take a three-hour catamaran journey to get to this remote Caribbean island; both cost around US$100). But it is one of the best tropical vacation spots in the world.

Its remoteness means that its golden curls of sand are mostly footprint-free. The palms here lean over like yoga enthusiasts. The turquoise-blue waters are gin-clear. Most people are here to snorkel or dive the coral reefs or, well, sunbathe. Being a duty-free island makes Providencia even cheaper still – especially at the beach bars.

If you want paradise to be a little more accessible, mainland Colombia has options too. Try Playa Blanca, close to Cartagena , which offers beach huts, bars and hammocks for kipping overnight along its sugary, white beach.

Cozumel, Mexico

While December to March sees high prices in this area of Mexico, the rest of the year offers much better rates and plenty of ways to save money. Hurricane season lasts from July till October in Cozumel – but until September, this usually just means occasional rains. July and August offer very low prices on flights and accommodation in exchange for some cloudy skies here and there.

For better weather and equally great prices, visit between late March and June. Temperatures can fluctuate but you'll get plenty of sunny days and some great deals plus much smaller crowds.

Cozumel beaches are free all year long, so you can spend entire days enjoying the sun and spend almost nothing. If you prefer the comfort of a pool, you can get a day pass at one of the luxury local resorts - which will allow you full use of their pool and sun chairs without the cost of sleeping there.

The Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park is the world's second-largest coral reef system , perfect for some diving at very affordable prices.

For a quick bite or snacks on the go, nothing beats a local mercado - little markets that appear unannounced in plazas, where you can get not only great souvenirs and local art but also traditional fare, such as tamales and quesadillas, for very little money.

Idyllic beach scene in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

High season in the Dominican Republic isn't always cheap, but the months of April , May, and June offer the best of two worlds : mostly sunny days, warm but comfortable weather, and lots of special discounts on accommodations and flights – with prices reduced as much as 50 percent from the high-season rates.

June is the start of the rainy and hurricane season, but storms are rare during this month, so it's a great month to explore for less.

Although Santo Domingo and Punta Cana have pricey accommodations, things get cheaper when you head to smaller towns and off-the-beaten-track destinations, such as Samana and Bahia de las Aguilas. In many places, all-inclusive resorts can actually save you money , as eating out will get expensive - there's a 16 percent government tax added to meals, plus many restaurants add a 10 percent service charge to the bill.

El Nido, Palawan, Philippines

June to November is off-peak season in this small archipelagic province in the Philippines. It's also monsoon season, but don't let that scare you – even during rainy season, it doesn't rain every day, and rains often just come in the form of heavy but short afternoon downpours. Rains do lower temperatures a little, making it more comfortable to walk around and explore.

For the best possible weather, arrive early in the season, as the heavier storms are usually after September. Airlines and hotels offer heavy discounts during this time, with off-peak prices saving you as much as 80 percent compared to regular costs.

Both Puerto Princesa and El Nido offer plenty of budget accommodations right on the coastline. This usually means beach bungalows with no luxury amenities, but if you'll spend most of your time at the beach or enjoying water activities, it might be enough - plus you'll still get stunning views once you get back to your room.

All beaches are free to access in Palawan, and visitors can also try other free or very inexpensive attractions, including visiting the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center, exploring the Tabon Caves (no tour needed), and taking a dip in the natural pool at the Estrella Falls.

Women walking through rice fields in Ubud, Bali

A favorite tropical destination for worldwide visitors, Bali can be a bargain if you pick your travel times right. As a general rule, destinations in the southern part of the island are more expensive . This includes Kuta, Ubud, and Seminyak, where everything costs double than in destinations in the central hills or up north. Even here, though, visiting in the off-season (March to May) will still save you a considerable amount of money.

March and April can be a little rainy, but May offers sun and low humidity. The rainy season, which lasts from October to April, offers great deals in airfares and accommodations, and you'll still see plenty of sunshine on most days.

All beaches in Bali are public and free, but the island also offers beautiful rice paddies, breathtaking mountains for hiking, and lots of temples and palaces, none of which charge an entry fee.

Luang Prabang, Laos

Laos has been a backpacking haven for many years – a good indication that this tropical Southeast Asian country is a very affordable destination. Bowls of noodles, sticky rice, and other quick meals can be had from street food stalls for a couple of dollars or less, and outside of the capital, four-star hotels will cost you a third of what you would pay in Europe.

December and January see the most visitors, as the weather is dry and cool, with comfortable temperatures in the mid 20s Celsius. Arrive at any other time, and you'll see smaller crowds and even lower prices.

Luang Prabang, Laos' former capital and a UNESCO World Heritage city, is one of the most visited destinations in the country. A mix of French colonial architecture and traditional wooden houses, Luang Prabang offers a great mix of temples, including 16 th -century Wat Xieng Thong temple, with its intricate wooden carvings and mosaic patterns, and nature, all free to visit.

Mount Phu Si, just behind the city, is great for hiking and to catch the sunset. Vientiane, the capital city, is a popular foodie destination and home to a number of national monuments, a sculpture garden of giant Buddha statues, and the famous Great Stupa temple – also all free.

Koh Rong beach

Although most visitors who come to Cambodia head to the ancient temples in Angkor Wat, the country also offers plenty of outdoor adventures for those looking for some tropical adventure. Lush green mountains, thick forests, and sugary-white sands all abound in Cambodia.

Cambodia's rugged and undeveloped beaches are a treat for visitors, as the crowds are smaller than in neighboring Thailand, and the resorts are cheaper. Koh Rong, the most developed island in the country, is a paradise of coral reefs and sandy coves, where you can just sit back to enjoy a mesmerizing sunset or head out for a speedboat tour over the azure waters.

Despite its many offerings, Koh Rong costs a fraction of what a tropical beach vacation in Thailand or Malaysia would cost. For what you would pay to see a movie back home, here you can hop on a boat for a full-day tour, have lunch at a local restaurant for three days in a row, or rent all the needed equipment for snorkeling.

Hiking in the Costa Rican jungle

Costa Rica is not necessarily always a cheap tropical getaway, but arriving at the right time of year will definitely save a lot of money. From May to mid-December, Costa Rica experiences what's known as the "green season" – lots of rain, thick cloud forests on green mountainsides, and budget-friendly surf breaks at a time when the big crowds mostly stay away. Don't let the rain scare you , though – it's still warm, and you'll get plenty of sunny days to enjoy the beach.

The Volcano Arenal, one of the most stunning destinations for hiking in Costa Rica, is perfect for some budget fun – just pay the park's entrance fee but skip the guided hikes; it's easy enough to follow the signs on your own. Most of the national parks in the country charge an entry fee, but the cost is low, and you can spend an entire day exploring, hiking volcano trails, canoeing, trying hot springs, or even horseback riding.

When it comes to accommodations, staying out of the main tourist towns – including San Jose and Arenal – will land you the best deals.

Mu Koh Angthong National Marine Park, Koh Samui

Thailand has some of the cheapest tropical islands to visit , where you can have a luxurious trip no matter what your budget. Depending on where you're heading in Thailand, low season can fall in December or in August , so it's important to do some research in advance to find the cheapest months.

Koh Samui, one of Thailand's most beloved beach destinations, goes through low season between October and mid-December. October and November can be rainy in the afternoons, but December is sunnier and drier. These are great months to score deals in hotels and flights.

The nearby island of Koh Tao is a popular day trip destination for snorkeling and scuba diving – but November and December aren't good months for it because of rough seas. Instead, arrive in the shoulder season (March to May) to do this at great prices, with a good chance to see whale sharks near the coast.

Hoi An

If you're looking for affordable tropical honeymoon destinations , the charming little town of Hoi An is a great choice for many reasons: it's still enough off the beaten track that you won't see big crowds, it offers privacy and romance on a budget, and it's just minutes away from the turquoise waters and soft white beaches of Da Nang.

The UNESCO World Heritage city of Hoi An is a perfect fairy tale – an old trading port town with buildings dating back to the 15 th century, all to be explored on foot. Just a short drive away is Da Nang, where you'll find plenty of luxury resorts but also beach hotels that offer plenty of amenities but are very budget friendly.

Hoi An and Da Nang low season falls between the months of September and March. This is the area's typhoon season, which usually just means short but heavy afternoon rains. Arrive during these months for incredible deals on airfare and accommodation, including vacation packages that can be 50 percent or more off the regular price.

Sky Bridge on Langkawi Island

There's much to see and do in tropical Malaysia : rainforest treks, cave exploring, and never-ending shopping in urban jungles. But vibrant Malaysia is also home to stunning diving sites, golden beaches, and crystal-clear waters.

Langkawi, an archipelago of 99 islands in the heart of the Andaman Sea, is a great island to visit if you're on a budget . It offers plenty of things to do, long stretches of beach, and very affordable accommodations year-round.

For even better savings, you can visit in rainy September or October , when prices are slashed by 50 percent everywhere. On the upside, this is the island's most lush, greenest time – perfect for visiting the seven pools of Telaga Tujuh, walking on the Sky Bridge (660 meters above sea level over the thick rainforest), and hiking through the mangrove forests of Kilim Geoforest Park – all free activities.

Divi divi tree on the beach in Aruba

Aruba might sound like a destination for the rich and famous only, but this island in the southern Caribbean Sea can be great for budget beach vacations, too.

The key to keeping a trip to Aruba cheap is timing: September and October are usually very cheap months in Aruba because the island's trade winds die down, and the temperatures go up, often staying in the mid-30s Celsius, even at night. If you don't mind the sweltering heat and plan on spending most of your time in the water anyway, you can find great discounts during these months. Hotels often offer 50 percent or higher discounts on rooms, and dive boats will arrange discount packages as well.

June to August are less hot but still cheap, though the discounts aren't as deep. Aruba has plenty of well-equipped supermarkets where you can stock up on snacks to cut down on restaurant visits. Beach restaurants are especially expensive here, and small things add up (like beach towel rentals) so be prepared to cut down on unnecessary costs.

When you need a break from the beach, ride the free tourist trolley through Oranjestad town; walk on the California Dunes; and explore the Balashi ruins, the site of a former gold smelter.

Puerto Escondido, Mexico

If you want to score cheap deals in Mexico, the best bet is to head to destinations that are more off the beaten path. The coast of Oaxaca, for example, is still relatively untrodden, compared to other beach destinations in the country. As a result, you'll find that accommodations, dining, and things to do in Oaxaca are far more affordable.

Puerto Escondido is one of the top surf spots in Mexico , which means it has long been on the backpacker trail. You'll find plenty of boutique beachfront hotels, guesthouses, and affordable Airbnbs all along the coastline. "High season" is technically May through November because of weather and summer travels, but you won't see prices fluctuating dramatically. January through April is the dry season, and also when Puerto Escondido is at its sleepiest. This is the time to snag the rock bottom prices.

No matter the time of year, the beaches in Mexico are always free, and the beaches along the coast of Oaxaca are especially stunning. Cheap eats are also incredibly easy to come by all across the country, but in Puerto Escondido in particular, you'll find street food and hole-in-the-wall restaurants that are wallet-friendly.

Buses and colectivos make it easy to get around on a budget, as well.

Koh Lanta, Thailand

Thailand has no shortage of beautiful islands, but as more and more people discover them, prices tend to go up. Koh Lanta, one of the best islands in Krabi , remains as one of the most affordable islands in Thailand.

Koh Lanta is known for its long, lovely beaches, as well as the blend of cultures that have descended upon its shores for decades, from all across Asia to Europe and beyond. It's also a popular spot for diving, particularly in spots like Ko Haa and His Dang.

The island is not far from the more raucous and popular Koh Phi-Phi, but unlike its neighbor, Koh Lanta is much more tame, quiet, and serene. That said, weather is something to pay attention to when arranging a trip. Dry season is the most popular and most convenient, as many hotels and restaurants shut down in the rainy season. If you do go in the unpredictable and rainy season (April-July), you'll find that you have many of those picture-perfect beaches all to yourself.

Beyond beautiful beaches, visitors to Koh Lanta will find accommodation for less than $100 a night – and sometimes much cheaper than that.

Aerial view of the Gili Islands, Indonesia

Bali may be the most popular travel destination in Indonesia, but if you have the opportunity to visit the Gili Islands, you will not be disappointed. This chain of tiny sandbar-style islands are off the coast of Lombok, and are among the most affordable tropical islands you can visit anywhere in the world.

While the archipelago has many small islands, the ones travelers usually refer to are the three main ones: Gili Air, Gili Meno, and Gili Trawangan. These islands are a welcome respite from the more rowdy beaches and towns of Bali. Plus, they have the powder-soft, white beaches that you may be missing over on Bali. They also happen to be a fraction of the price.

Hotels are incredibly cheap in the Gilis, with hotel rooms averaging around $20 per night. Airbnb can be extremely cheap, as well, ranging anywhere from $30 to $140 per night. Dining is incredibly affordable, too, with a lavish seafood dinner costing somewhere around $10. Of course, you can always spend more if you want to. Depending on your style of travel, you can get away with as little as $30 a day, or pay as much as $300.

Peak seasons in the Gili Islands are between July and August and December to January. Monsoon season starts in November and lasts until April. If you want fewer people and dry weather, then September to November would be the ideal time to go.

Corn Islands, Nicaragua

If you have yet to consider the country of Nicaragua for a cheap tropical vacation, you may want to look into the Corn Islands. Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America, known for its tourist hot spots like Granada, Leon, and San Juan del Sur. But venturing a bit off the beaten path in Nicaragua can lead to some of the best cheap getaways you can find in Central America, like the Corn Islands

The Corn Islands are part of an archipelago that lie 43 miles off the Nicaraguan Caribbean coast. These remote islands will give travelers that picture-perfect tropical paradise setting, with budget accommodations, dining options, and activities.

These magnetic islands are blessed with sparking turquoise bays, palm-fringed coves, and rocky underwater caves. Major developments are things of rumor on these two islands, which are known mostly for their modest wooden houses that are splashed with bright, Caribbean colors.

Little Corn is more touristed than Great Corn, and thus has more options for dining and accommodations. Diving is also better on Little Corn. But Great Corn has a wonderful and vibrant Creole population that ought not be missed.

Aerial view of Zanzibar

Tanzania is so much more than a place for a luxury safari. In fact, the coast of Tanzania is among the most beautiful tropical destinations in the world. Zanzibar, in particular, is one of the best places in Africa to experience that idyllic tropical beach paradise , especially for travelers on a budget.

Zanzibar is actually an archipelago made up of three main islands including Unguja, Pemba, and Mafia. Unguja is the largest island, and so many people believe that its name is Zanzibar. This Indian Ocean jewel is known for its bleached white sand; turquoise water; kaleidoscope of tropical fish and coral; and the historic capital, Zanzibar Town.

Getting around Zanzibar is easy, with abundant taxis or mini buses. Accommodation is also amazingly affordable, even though Zanzibar has the reputation of being a luxury honeymoon destination. Stone Town is backpacker friendly, as are the towns of Kendra and Nungwi on the northern coast. These areas also have very affordable restaurants, as well as plenty of activities to keep you entertained day or night.

The best time to visit the Tanzanian paradise is from June to October, as well as January and February. The other seasons tend to be rainier and humid.

15 of the Cheapest Tropical Islands to Visit

03/24/2024 by Emily Becker 2 Comments

It’s time to debunk the misconception that tropical island destinations are only for mega-luxurious vacations that cost an arm and a leg. In many parts of the world, it’s actually more affordable to stay on a beautiful island as opposed to a big, bustling city. Sure, it might take a bit of out-of-the-box thinking to find places like this — or to find ways to save money in less budget-friendly destinations — but that’s what lists like these are for. After all, don’t we all deserve to disconnect from the world on a lush tropical island once in a while?

From North America all the way to the Southeast tip of Africa, these are the cheapest tropical islands to visit — and some may surprise you!

Table of Contents

North America

1. big island of hawai’i, usa : $183/day.

Cheapest Tropical Islands to Visit

I know what you’re thinking: Hawai’i?! Cheap?! But hear me out. You might be surprised at how budget-friendly visiting Hawai’i can be, especially if you stay on the Big Island. Even if $183 a day sounds pricey, there are plenty of ways to save money when traveling to Hawai’i .

For starters, traveling to the Big Island during low season (February to April) will save you big bucks on accommodation and flights. Lower your costs even more by camping, which will only put you out $21/night; you can make a reservation here . You can also find lots of budget-friendly options on Airbnb, like this neat yurt for $136/night .

Making the most out of the incredible scenery is easy to do on the cheap, as many of the Big Island’s best things to do are free or very affordable. Take Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historic Park, for example. It has fee-free days, and regular admission ranges from $10 to $20, depending on if you need parking.

  • Meals: $30-50/day, if you cook breakfast on your own and have two meals out.
  • Accommodation: $21-140/day, the cheapest option being camping.
  • Transportation: $0/day if you rely on the free public bus , $44/day for the cheapest car rental.
  • SIM card with data: $0/day if you already have an American SIM card.

2. The Bahamas : $100/day

Cheapest Tropical Islands to Visit

With 700 islands and over 2,400 cays, it’s fair to say that there’s something for everyone in the Bahamas. Whether you’re planning to check out the vibrant city of Nassau or looking for a more laid-back spot like Staniel Cay , it’s totally doable to visit on a tight budget.

While you’re planning your trip, you might notice that popular excursions like swimming with pigs and nurse sharks can be pricey. A more affordable alternative could be kayaking through the Exuma Cays on your own and seeing the area’s wildlife that way. You can rent a kayak with Out Island Explorers for just $50 for the whole day. Another awesome excursion is visiting Lucayan National Park, which costs just $5 for admission. Find more ideas for what to do in the Bahamas here .

Saving money on accommodation might seem like an impossible task, considering the abundance of luxury hotels throughout the islands. However, a little bit of creativity and an open mind can go a long way here. For example, this apartment is available for only $59/night , and can ask your host about cheap attractions and restaurants.

  • Meals: $25-35/day, and take advantage of the generous helpings of seafood at fish fries and the food stalls at the Port Lucaya Marketplace.
  • Accommodation: $60-75/night; this unique tiny house is a cheap option at just $65/night .
  • Transportation: $5-20/day, if you just stick to one island and use the private minibuses (aka jitneys) or taxis to get around. Ferries and flights to other islands will set your budget back drastically, and renting a car is also expensive in the Bahamas (over $60/day).
  • SIM card with data: $3/day, with SIM cards for around $15 that are already loaded with plenty of data.

3. Puerto Rico, USA : $77/day

Cheapest Tropical Islands to Visit

This Caribbean island is a paradise that won’t break the bank. Like many destinations in Latin America, it’s a breeze finding ways to save money in Puerto Rico, including avoiding big seaside hotels. You can find hostels and affordable Airbnbs easily in San Juan.

If you want to check out other places on the island, like El Yunque National Forest or tiny islands like Isla Culebra, you can easily catch a bus or ferry for cheap. In fact, the ferry from Ceiba to Isla Culebra is only $2.25. You can also book an excursion to El Yunque for as little as $45 , which includes transportation to and from San Juan.

Puerto Ricans are extremely hospitable and generous. You won’t have to pay big bucks for a filling lunch, and chances are you’ll even have leftovers. For an affordable meal, check out one of the many chinchorros (small food stalls) in San Juan. You can find these on busy streets and markets; meals there typically cost $4-8.

  • Meals: $20-30/day, if you stay somewhere with free breakfast and go out for lunch and dinner.
  • Accommodation: $18-30/night, with the cheapest hostels offering dorm beds for around $21 per night and some Airbnbs as low as $53/night for a studio .
  • Transportation: $15-40/day, if you use public transportation to get around San Juan or to other cities. Renting a car in Puerto Rico may be as cheap as $40/day.
  • SIM card with data: If you’re from the US, you won’t need a special SIM card for Puerto Rico.

4. Isla Holbox, Mexico : $75/day

Cheapest Tropical Islands to Visit

Isla Holbox never ceases to enchant me, and I would be lying if I said I was satisfied with visiting just one time. This is one of the many places I’ve gone back to in Mexico because of how beautiful and affordable it is.

Holbox is a small island off the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, with calm shores and even a bioluminescent lagoon. There are no cars there (except for the occasional maintenance vehicle); locals get around via golf cart or motorcycle.

The island has become more popular in recent years and thus less affordable than it used to be, which is unfortunately normal for a lot of places in Mexico. However, it still remains quite accessible compared to other places like Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, which are nearby. In Holbox, you can still find inexpensive dorm beds, places to camp, and even some very affordable Airbnbs. The food scene is also relatively cheap, with taco stands and small beach shacks selling ceviche here and there for about $5 a meal. The restaurants and cafés are still more expensive than other places in Mexico, but you can expect to pay $10-15 for lunch or dinner.

If you think this is the cheap tropical island for you, don’t miss out on this complete Isla Holbox guide for everything you need to know before your trip.

  • Meals: $20-30/day, if you stay somewhere with free breakfast.
  • Accommodation: $16-28/night, for a dorm bed or glamping on the beach .
  • Transportation: $0/day, as the island is so small you can easily walk anywhere you need to go. However, you’ll have to factor in transportation to the island from Cancún. The bus from Cancún to the ferry port in Chiquilá costs around $20 each way. The ferry to Isla Holbox costs about $11 each way. If you’re renting a car instead, check out this guide to renting a car in Mexico for budget tips.
  • SIM card with data: Telcel is the biggest provider; you can buy a SIM card for 150 pesos ($7.50 USD) and spend as little as 100 pesos ($5 USD) for up to two weeks of data.

5. Dominican Republic : $85/day

Cheapest Tropical Islands to Visit

There’s so much more to the Dominican Republic than the flashy resorts in Punta Cana. This vibrant Caribbean island nation has the perfect balance of laid-back beach vibes and lively Latin culture. The locals are warm and hospitable, always willing to lend a hand if you need directions or a restaurant recommendation for a cheap lunch. Not only that but the country is one of the cheapest destinations in Latin America if you play your cards right.

First, avoid Punta Cana if you want to save money in the DR. Opt for keeping your base in Santo Domingo, or even in a smaller town like Las Terrenas if you want a more authentic experience. Especially in the historic center of Santo Domingo, touristy restaurants might shock you with how expensive they are. Instead, try heading down a side street to find a more local joint for a home-cooked meal. Dominican food is incredibly rich and delicious, so you won’t be disappointed.

Transportation from Santo Domingo to other parts of the island can be really cheap if you don’t mind bopping around like the locals do. You can expect to pay around $10 for a bus ticket from the capital to Punta Cana, for example. These buses are cheap, so don’t expect a five-star experience — prepare for a potentially cramped ride.

The Dominican Republic has gorgeous beaches, thick jungles, and quaint small towns where you’ll get a taste for authentic island life. This one is for the adventurous traveler, for sure.

  • Meals: $20-30/day, by sticking to local favorites and avoiding tourist traps.
  • Accommodation: $20-$40/night, with hostels like Island Life Hostel as low as $20 for a dorm bed and free breakfast. Airbnbs like this beautiful off-the-beaten-path bungalow are around $39/night .
  • Transportation: $10/day, using public transportation; $50/day if you rent a car.
  • SIM card with data: $1-2/day, for a prepaid SIM card (that you can buy at the airport) with 28 days of data; it costs about $12 total.

South America

6. galápagos islands, ecuador : $115/day.

Galápagos on a budget

This one might surprise you. Long thought of as a destination only suited for luxury travelers on fancy cruise ships, the Galápagos have earned a reputation for being a bougie place to visit. This certainly isn’t the case, however. This ecological treasure trove can actually be very accessible to travelers on a budget, which is great news if the Galápagos have been on your bucket list for a while.

Although there are plenty of expensive hotels there, there are also a few budget options that are comfortable. If you stay on Isabela, for example, you’ll find some of the cheapest accommodation in the islands, at around $18/night.

There are plenty of pricey excursions and diving opportunities in the Galápagos, but there are also enough activities that are completely free to keep you busy. You can swim in the lava-carved pools of Las Grietas, hang out on Tortuga Bay on Santa Cruz , hike to the Mirador Cerro Tijeretas on San Cristóbal , or bike the Wall of Tears on Isabela .

For more tips on traveling to the Galápagos on a budget, check out this guide .

  • Meals: $30-40/day, as seafood meals typically cost $10-15 per entrée.
  • Accommodation: $18-60/night, with basic rooms on Airbnb starting at $20/night, or hotels like Dolphin House that have great budget options.
  • Transportation: $30/day, if you plan to visit different islands via ferry.
  • SIM card with data: $2/day; you should grab a SIM card in mainland Ecuador for about $5, loading it with data as you go.

7. Islas Ballestas, Peru : $56/day

Cheapest Tropical Islands to Visit

Many backpackers moving through South America tend to visit the Islas Ballestas, known as “the poor man’s Galápagos,” because of how much more economical they are in comparison. But just like the Galápagos, this chain of islands in the Pacific Ocean is teeming with wildlife, from migratory birds to seals and even penguins.

You can’t actually stay on the Ballestas because they’re uninhabited, but this is a big plus for many adventurous travelers who want to see unspoiled nature at its best. You can stay in the coastal town of Paracas instead, which has plenty of cheap accommodation. There are tours to the islands for as little as $12, which is an absolute steal!

  • Meals: $20-30/day, with delicious ceviche plates around $7 that make a perfect beachside lunch.
  • Accommodation: $8-23/night, with dorm beds for as little as $8 and private rooms in Airbnbs for around $23/night .
  • Transportation: $12-20/day, for transportation to different parts of the islands via boat.
  • SIM card with data: $1-2/day, as SIM cards in Peru cost about $1.50 and you can load data as you go. You can also opt for an international eSIM so you can roam on the go.

Although no islands in Europe are technically in the tropics, these have warm weather year-round, making them feel in many ways like tropical islands.

8. Poros, Greece : $160/day

sailing greek islands poros

Greece is not only one of the best places in the world to island-hop but also one of the most affordable. Poros is one of the more low-key Greek islands, and also one of the cheapest. It has the pristine white buildings with blue domes and abundant bougainvillea flowers that you expect to see here, with a vibrant gastronomical scene that will make you want to eat your way through the whole island.

Poros is only a one-hour ferry ride from Athens, so you won’t need to invest too much in transportation costs like you would if you were going to another island further away from the Athens airport. Plus, accommodations are cheap there; you can rent an entire residential home for $58 a night . To top it all off, a full three-course meal will only cost you about $15.

Compared to places like Santorini , which are more expensive and crowded, Poros gives you the opportunity to enjoy everything that the Greek islands have to offer without breaking the bank.

  • Meals: $20-30/day, if you make breakfast yourself and spend $10-15 on lunch and dinner.
  • Accommodation: $60-140/night; there are great options on Airbnb and hotels like Poros Hotel (rooms at just $130/night) .
  • Transportation: $12-20/day, for taxis to places like Russian Bay or to rent a scooter or ATV to explore the island.
  • SIM card with data: $3/day, for a SIM from Vodafone that costs around $6 plus data.

9. Malta : $100/day

Cheapest Tropical Islands to Visit

Cities with hilly cobblestone streets and hues of yellow painted on antique buildings contrast with turquoise seas and green mossy cliffs in Malta. Sure, the scenes here are distinct from the tropical islands of the Caribbean, but this European island destination is just as dreamy.

Maltese culture is a fascinating result of centuries of North African and European invasions and control, giving the nation its modern-day uniqueness. Here, you’ll find domes reminiscent of Middle Eastern mosques next to gothic-style buildings, and nearly every street bursts with color. And the best thing is that visiting Malta is incredibly affordable, especially in comparison with other destinations in Europe.

Here you can grab a tasty ricotta-filled pastizz for $1, take a city bus from one end of Valletta to the other for $2, and stay in a hostel for around $28 a night. During the summertime, prices go up , so plan to visit in the late spring or fall for the best shot at saving money.

Find a list of the best things to do in Malta here .

  • Meals: $25-45/day, if you stick to a cheap breakfast and cafés for lunch and dinner.
  • Accommodation: $28-31/night, with dorm beds as little as $28/night or an entire studio apartment for $45/night . Airbnb is the better option, as shared dorms are only slightly cheaper than a private room in a house.
  • Transportation: $2-28/day: if you take the bus, it’s about $2 for a two-hour ticket to go anywhere. Scooter rentals can be as low as $28/day if you avoid the summertime and book in advance.
  • SIM card with data: $3/day, with a prepaid SIM card for around $10, plus data.

10. Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain: $82/day

Cheapest Tropical Islands to Visit

The Canaries are sunny, mountainous, and lush, with a brilliant mix of Spanish, African, and Arab culture that makes it a truly one-of-a-kind destination.

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands of Spain, which are off the coast of West Africa. The island itself is made from a volcano called Mt. Teide, which is the tallest peak in Spain.

Here you’ll find extremely cheap accommodation, with Airbnbs starting at around $15/night, a price that is nearly impossible to find on the Spanish mainland. Tenerife also has free activities galore, like visiting Parque Natural del Teide, which has a shockingly similar geology to that of Mars. You can also visit La Laguna and the Museo de Historia y Antropología for free on Fridays and Saturdays or see giant basalt rock formations at Acantilados de los Gigantes.

With such an eclectic mix of cultures, you can expect the food here to be incredible. Even better, it’s super cheap, with two-course meals costing around $12. Eat, drink, and hang out on the beach to your heart’s content without overspending.

  • Meals : $20-30/day, with fried fish plates as cheap as $7 and famous papas arrugadas con mojo (wrinkled potatoes with dips) for $3.
  • Accommodation: $24-50/night. I found this cozy room for just $24/night .
  • Transportation: $5/day, if you use the buses (called guaguas ) to get around the island. It will cost around $30/day to rent a car, with prices being lower in the spring and fall.
  • SIM card with data: $2/day, if you buy a $12 SIM card that includes 121GB of data from Movistar.

11. Koh Chang, Thailand : $33/day

Cheapest Tropical Islands to Visit

The lush green mountain jungles paired with the soft blue water below make it no surprise that Koh Chang is such a special place for so many travelers. Although it’s the second largest island in Thailand, it’s a bit more off the beaten path than other tourist hot spots like Koh Phi Phi and Ko Samui, but has become more popular in recent years.

Thailand is known as one of the cheaper destinations, so it’s no wonder why the country attracts so many backpackers on a shoestring budget. I mean, I once stayed in hostel in Chiang Mai for $3/night, which blew my mind. Koh Chang is no exception and has a great selection of affordable Airbnbs and hostels. You might even be able to find a cheap overwater bungalow here .

Attractions are also affordable on the island, and there’s plenty of nature to explore. You can easily get to the Klong Plu waterfall via taxi or motorbike, or visit the Bang Bao floating village for the day. Another popular spot among backpackers is Lonely Beach, where you’ll find cheap restaurants and accommodations galore. For more ideas on what to do on Koh Chang, check out this guide .

  • Meals: $10-20/day, as meals are famously cheap; if you stick to local delights like curries, noodle dishes, and street food, you could spend as little as $10/day on food.
  • Accommodation: $6-12/night, with dorm beds starting at $6/night at Cafe Del Sunshine , or stay in this bungalow for just $12/night .
  • Transportation: $3-10/day, if you stick to local transportation to get around. You could also rent a scooter for as low as $10/day.
  • SIM card with data: $2-3/day, with lots of options available.

12. Nusa Islands, Indonesia : $50/day

suwehan penida

If you’ve been dying to go to Bali but are discouraged by overtourism, go to the Nusa Islands instead. Some people even say that this is what Bali looked like 30 years ago, which is enough of a reason for me. Plus, you can easily get to the islands from Bali’s Sanur via a 30-minute boat ride.

There are three islands here that are all worth visiting: Nusa Lembongan, Ceningan, and Penida. The beaches here are pristine and the interiors of the islands feature thick jungles, mangrove forests, and waterfalls. You’ll find breathtaking views on hikes throughout the islands, nearly all of which won’t cost you a dime. Intrigued? Check out this full Nusa Islands itinerary for more ideas.

Accommodations in Indonesia are famously cheap, and the Nusa Islands are no exception. Considering you can have a gorgeous jungle bungalow for just $37/night , you can imagine why so many people never want to leave.

  • Meals: $10-20/day, if you stick to traditional Indonesian delights like Nasi Campur (a mixed rice plate) which costs only about $1, balanced with other more expensive meals.
  • Accommodation: $5-14/night, with dorm beds at Bima Hostel starting around $8/night and bungalows like this one in the jungle for just $30/night .
  • Transportation: $2-5/day, if you take taxis around the islands or rent a motorbike to explore, which only costs around $5/day.

13. Coron Island, Philippines : $80/day

Cheapest Tropical Islands to Visit

From the stunning lagoons to the picture-perfect beaches, Coron Island is sure to enchant you. It’s a great spot to indulge in your island dreams without spending too much

If you are a snorkeling or diving enthusiast, Coron Island might already be on your bucket list for how popular it is. Like many well-known places, Coron Island does get crowded during peak season (January-March). Avoid the higher prices and hoards of tourists simply by avoiding a visit during this time.

You can find dirt-cheap accommodations in Coron Town, often the jumping-off point for island-hopping around Coron Island , as well as exploring other parts of the island itself. It’s also quite affordable to eat here if you balance going to restaurants with trying street food delicacies like adobo and seafood platters.

  • Meals: $20-30/day, if you have a light breakfast and do either lunch or dinner at a street food stall.
  • Accommodation: $10-30/night, as Dayon Hostel’s dorm beds start around $10 ; Airbnbs are around $35/night, like this two-person room with a bunk bed .
  • Transportation: $10-50/day, if you do any kind of island-hopping tours.
  • SIM card with data: $1-2/day, if you buy a prepaid SIM for about $2 and load data as you go.

14. Zanzibar, Tanzania: $60/day

zanzibar style

Many travelers only dream of visiting this African island paradise. It’s not only a gorgeous, beachy haven, it’s also incredibly rich in history and culture. Known as “the spice island,” Zanzibar gets its fame as a star producer of spices like nutmeg, vanilla, and so much more.

Zanzibar’s cuisine is bursting with flavor and you’ll be able to try some of the island’s best street food at the Foradhani Gardens night market, where you can get a meal for just a couple dollars.

Zanzibar isn’t one of the cheapest places to visit in Africa, but it’s still very affordable in comparison to other tropical islands. Especially if you stay in Stone Town and avoid the big beach hotels in Nungwi and Kendwa, you’ll find that Zanzibar is very affordable for backpackers even. If you do want to stay near the beach, you won’t have to shell out too much. Beachside bungalows are as low as $22/night on Airbnb, so why not spend a couple days with your feet in the sand?

  • Meals: $10-15/day, sticking to street food and beachside seafood shacks for affordable and filling meals.
  • Accommodation: $25-40/night, if you opt to stay in Stone Town try this private room for $30/night .
  • Transportation: $7-12/day, if you use Zanzibus shuttles to get between different cities.
  • SIM card with data: $1-2/day, with a Vodacom SIM card plus data.

15. Ilha de Bazaruto, Mozambique: $50/day

vilanculos mozambique

This sandy archipelago off the coast of southern Mozambique is virtually unknown to most travelers unless they’ve been to southeastern Africa.

So, here’s the kicker: You can’t actually stay on Bazaruto, as the population there is only about 4,000 and there are no hotels, hostels, or guesthouses. To visit, you can stay in Vilanculos and take a boat over for around $10 each way. Vilanculos is a sleepy beach town known for its shallow turquoise waters that go on for miles.

Bazaruto has five islands, actually: Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina, and Bangue. You’ll find brilliant expanses of white-sand dunes as far as the eye can see, with tons of marine life. Diving and snorkeling off the archipelago is popular, as you can see manta rays, whale sharks, dolphins, and even dugongs. Find out more about what to do near Bazaruto and Vilanculos here .

  • Meals: $10-20/day, if you grab a meal in the local market or at a beachside seafood stand. Restaurants are also reasonable in Vilanculos; you can expect to pay around $7-10 for a nice meal.
  • Accommodation: $14-30/night, with rooms around $30/night .
  • Transportation: $20/day, for transportation to and from Bazaruto.

I tend to find that traveling on the cheap is more adventurous and down-to-earth, even if I’m not super strapped for cash. Often, looking for more rugged accommodation has led me to meeting interesting people and traveling more like a local, which I enjoy. After all, if you really want to get to know a place, as Anthony Bourdain’s advised, “Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them — wherever you go.”

I did not realize how you can enjoy such incredible islands for a reasonable price. Malta, Poros, and the Canaries are geographically outside of tropical latitudes however to be a “tropical Island” or “tropical island paradise” you just have to be “tropical”-like according to many definitions, so even technically, you are fine to include them in a “tropical island” post. Tropical latitudes are not necessary required! In fact, technically, you can have islands in the tropical latitudes and they are desert islands!! 🙂 Either way, you all have made me realize the beauty of the Greek isles and now am eager to visit there. Either way, I now know that I can afford to go to all of these amazing places. Now I just need to find the time :). Another great article!

Best of the Caribbean – island vacations for cheap

Let’s head to one of my favorite regions of the world first – the Caribbean! Crisp, white sand beaches meet beautiful, warm water. You’ll find a diverse culture in the Caribbean, with delicious food and even more sought-after beaches.

1. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

dominican repulbic punta cana

Punta Cana is one of the most famous destinations in the Caribbean. While there are definitely a lot of luxury resorts in the area, it’s also possible to travel to Punta Cana for a cheap island vacation.

When traveling on a budget, you have 2 options to organize your vacation in Punta Cana. If you like a beach vacation with food, drinks, entertainment and activities included, you can book one of the cheap all-inclusive resorts Punta Cana has to offer. For as low as $60 USD per person per night, you can get decent accommodations.

In general, the quality in Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic is amazingly good, considering what you get for your money. Even in an affordable all-inclusive resort, you have food, drinks and entertainment included all day long.

If you prefer to travel on your own, you can also book one of the several Airbnbs in Punta Cana or individual accommodations. In Bavaro, rates start from around $15 USD per room per night. This is particularly recommendable if you want to explore all the hidden gems Punta Cana has to offer.

Secluded waterfalls, off-the-beaten-track hikes and pristine beaches are just some of the things you can explore. Public transport in Punta Cana is available for as low as 1 USD per ride.

Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic are safe to visit either way. For whatever way of travel you decide, you’ll have a great island vacation for cheap in Punta Cana!

2. Caye Caulker, Belize

cheapest island vacations caye caulker belize

A short boat ride from Belize City sits the tropical island of Caye Caulker. It’s just 5 miles long and a few blocks wide. The aqua blue waters will have you thinking you’ve just stepped onto a Caribbean island. T he prices on the island will make you believe you’ve stepped back into the 1980’s.

From world-class snorkeling and scuba diving to renting a bicycle and traversing the few square miles of this mostly desolate island, Caye Caulker , Belize is the ultimate cheap island getaway in Central America . The food, drinks and accommodation on the island will set you back just a fraction of the cost of a Caribbean getaway. And you’ll see far fewer people, too.

But arguably the coolest trait about this spectacular vacation destination is that the only cars allowed on the island are government vehicles that fix powerlines and other utilities. Otherwise, you won’t hear honking horns and there will be no cars to watch for when crossing the bicycle and golf-cart filled dirt streets.

It’s pretty easy to do Caye Caulker on a budget . It’s easy to save big if you stay in a hostel, take in the plentiful happy hours and go snorkeling for free off the many nearby reefs , including Iguana Reef at the edge of town.

3. Turks & Caicos Islands (one of my favorite cheap island getaways)

island vacations cheap turks and caicos

If you’re looking for soft white sand with the most turquoise blue water you’ve ever seen, you need to go to Turks and Caicos! The best part of visiting this island chain is that it’s cheaper than you’d think!

You’ll find plenty of things to do in Turks and Caicos , including some of the best beaches in all of the Caribbean!

Here are 4 ways to doing Turks and Caicos for cheap:

  • Stay in a vacation rental off the beach. Skip the pricey hotels on this island to save big!
  • Book cheap flights using flight alerts like FareDrop . I saved hundreds on flights this way!
  • Avoid peak tourism season for better prices. Travelers typically escape to Turks and Caicos over the winter and summer months, so try a trip in the spring or fall instead.
  • Hit the grocery store when you first arrive. Packing simple meals for the beach means less money at pricey restaurants.

Turks and Caicos islands are one of my favorite cheapest island vacations I’ve ever done. I’d 100% recommend adding this one to your bucket list!

4. Isla Holbox, Mexico

cheapest islands mexico

Mexico is one of the best destinations for budget travelers who are looking for beaches and beautiful weather. However, many people never make it beyond Mexico’s tourist hotspot of Cancun. It’s a shame, because just a few hours away there’s a stunning island waiting to be discovered.

Isla Holbox is the perfect island destination for people who love relaxed and laid-back vibes and cool street art. There are almost no cars at Isla Holbox, so the best way to get around and explore this small island is by bike or golf car.

Some of the best things to do are going on boat tours to visit more islands around Isla Holbox, check out the mangroves and potentially crocodiles, see bioluminescence, go whale shark watching, chill at the beach, and of course sip cocktails at sunset!

Which brings us to one of the best budget-saving tips for Isla Holbox.

Generally speaking, island life is more expensive than living on the mainland, and the same applies to Isla Holbox. However, we’re still talking about relatively cheap Mexican standards here, making it one of the cheapest island vacations there is.

Yet, one way to save a lot of money on Isla Holbox is by utilizing Happy Hour. Seriously, if you want you can just find a happy hour every hour, just make sure you’re at the right bar at the right time! Find budget-friendly accommodations and hostels with this guide to the best hotels in Holbox .

5. Varadero, Cuba

cheap island vacations

Just 2 hours east of Havana, Cuba, Varadero is the beach you’re likely picturing when you think of a Caribbean. It has perfectly crystal waters and endless white sand . Despite being a favorite for visitors to Cuba and within Cuba alike, it still remains a budget friendly getaway.

One secret to  travel to Varadero  that makes it budget friendly comes from its expansive length of white sand beach. It’s almost 18 kilometers, most of which is public, and with public entrances every few blocks.

With access to relatively private and serene spots all up and down the beach, you won’t feel like you’re missing out on anything. Especially if you’re not staying in an expensive all-inclusive resort just a few minutes’ walk down the beach.

Airbnbs and private home rentals in Varadero can be quite inexpensive as well. Some are beachside or just a block or 2 from the water. Just a few blocks off the the main road where many restaurants and bars cluster, you’ll find a variety of inexpensive restaurants. Delicious Cuban food goes for just $4 or $5 for a complete meal.

A favorite budget splurge in Varadero is fresh lobster, which you can find for under $10. You can enjoy beach excursions by catamaran to nearby white sand cays. Also popular are trips to nearby underwater caves with their own swimming holes under the stalactites.

7. Key West (a surprisingly cheap island vacation)

sunset in key west budget trip

Key West, Florida is a super fun island the furthest south you can drive in the continental USA. The Florida Keys are individual islands connected by over-the-water bridges, making this island chain a unique part of the United States.

Furthest south you’ll find Key West. It’s a common stop for Caribbean cruises and has a reputation as a party city. But with all the history and family-friendly activities, it can be enjoyed by most anyone looking for a cheap island getaway.

Key West can be pricey if you’re not careful, but can also be done for cheap if you get creative!

Flights directly into Key West can be expensive, so the best way to get there is to fly into Miami. From there, and take a Miami to Key West road trip . But don’t hang onto the rental car during your time on the island. Bikes are the preferred way to get around and can be rented for a fraction of the cost.

Also be sure to avoid peak season, which is the winter months. They’re the priciest and the beaches will be full.

When you’re in Key West, make sure to catch a sunset at Mallory Square, take a kayaking tour through the mangroves and dine on a delicious slice of world-famous key lime pie!

Key West is also included on this epic list of 26 Gulf Coast beaches , if you’re looking for more beachy ideas!

8. San Juan, Puerto Rico

best cheap island vacations fort walls large brick wall with walking path along the Caribbean Sea on a sunny day

San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico is an absolutely gorgeous city on the northern coast of the Caribbean island. It is also one of the cheapest island destinations in the USA.

The reason it’s so affordable is that most people still haven’t discovered this gem. San Juan is known for its historic old district bubbling with risque bars, old taverns and the birthplace of the Pina Colada.

One of the best things to do in Old San Juan is walk the cool city. You’ll discover the proud castles Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo de San Cristobal that stand on the edge of the cliff.

You’ll find other interesting places like Chocobar Cortes and the famous Calle Fortaleza with the hundred hanging umbrellas. Of course, the gleaming beaches spread across Puerto Rico are equally enticing. (A favorite among beach lovers is the stunning Flamenco Beach, Puerto Rico .)

The bioluminescent bays sparkle like a thousand stars during the night and visitors love to take tours to see them in the bays near San Juan. Lastly the El Yunque rainforest is probably one of the most gorgeous hikes you will ever do.

The best thing about San Juan is that it is a very affordable destination. If you are a budget traveler you’ll find plenty of good clean hostels. The food and transportation are also surprisingly very low compared to the other good beach destinations. San Juan is definitely one place where you can enjoy the best of both worlds .

Well it might be hard to believe that Hawaii can be on this list of cheapest island vacations. As someone who’s been to Kauai on a budget, it’s 100% possible and also 100% amazing!

The first thing I’d recommend is watching for cheap flights using FareDrop . You could also use credit card or airline rewards points !

For accommodations, skip the pricey hotels. I’ve visited Hawaii many times and can tell you that you’ll likely be spending most of your time outside. So you really don’t need a pricey hotel room.

Lastly, opt for cheap entertainment. While one of my favorite memories on a trip to Hawaii was a helicopter tour over the NaPali coast , it was a splurge. Instead, hit the best beaches in Kauai – which are all free!

And if you’re an avid hiker, then this is your paradise! My favorite easy hike was the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trial (with spectacular ocean views). A more challenging hike was the Waimea Canyon Trail , which opened up to one of the most stunning views of Kauai ever.

14. Belitung Island, Indonesia

Belitung Island Indonesia

Belitung Island is not a famous beach destination in Southeast Asia like Bali, Lombok, or Phuket, but that doesn’t mean its breathtaking natural landscape is inferior to others. If you’re looking for a cheap island vacation, you should add Belitung Island in Indonesia to your list.

Belitung is one of the many perfect islands you must visit in Indonesia . The island is surrounded by more than 100 islands decorated with perfect soft-white sand, granite rocks, and heavenly scenery that you can’t find anywhere else. It’s a perfect place to laze on the beach.

So after arriving in Belitung, what can you do to utilize your great escape here? If you’re only going for a short visit, here are some of the many tourist attractions to check out in Belitong , as the locals pronounce it.

There’s the most famous little island called  Pulau Lengkuas . You can see the historic lighthouse that was built by the Dutch colonial in 1882. Climb up the 50-meter tall tower, although the highest level you are allowed on is the third floor, you’ll be able to enjoy the most perfect view there.  Pulau Lengkuas  is also a must-visit place if you enjoy snorkeling.

Not all of the tourist attractions in Belitung are beaches. You can also visit Andrea Hirata Museum, the colorful literary museum. It’s a montage to Andrea Hirata, who introduced the island with his best-selling novel, and also  Danau Kaolin , a man-made lake as a result of kaolin mining activity.

15. Koh Chang, Thailand (one of Asia’s best island vacations for cheap)

Koh Chang Thailand

Nowhere does beaches quite like Thailand, and Koh Chang is one of the best islands to visit in the country. It is often overshadowed by other islands and doesn’t make it into everybody’s Thailand itinerary , but that makes it not too touristy and the beach is unspoiled. It’s the perfect destination for those wanting a relaxing beach break, but also keen for a little bit of adventure!

Lonely Beach is the main backpacker area of the island. It’s still relatively chilled. There’s no full moon beach parties here, but if you are looking for some bars with a bit of atmosphere, it’s a fun place to visit.

Other things to do in Koh Chang include diving, hiking to waterfalls, touring around the island (with a guide or by motorbike!), and taking a Thai cooking class.

Koh Chang is also one of the best cheap island vacations in Thailand . There’s less tourism here than elsewhere in the country.

From Bangkok, you can take a cheap bus to Trat and then a boat to Koh Chang. I’d also recommend avoiding the peak season (October to February) if you’re looking to stay in Koh Chang on a budget.

16. Boracay, Philippines

Boracay Philippines

Boracay has won the title of the best beach in the world on more than one occasion. It’s probably the best known of the over 7000 islands that make up the Philippines.

A 4-kilometer stretch of white sand down one side of the island makes up White Beach. It’s the tourist hub of the island and the water is incredibly blue! The beach is lined with hotels, stores and restaurants and people selling their wares during the day. At night the sand transforms into pop-up bars with bean bags on the beach looking out over the water while performers busk for the coin that supports them.

From White Beach you can organize a variety of water activities including cruises, glass bottom boats, diving and island tours. Or you can relax under the palm trees on the sand. Make sure you take a walk to the top of White Beach at sunset to catch the exceptional  Boracay sunset !

For visitors from the West, Boracay is an incredibly cheap island getaway. It’s possible to spend less than $2,000 on a couple of weeks including all the flights, accommodation, food and activities.

During happy hour you can enjoy 2 cocktails for under $5, and have a full body one-hour massage with the waves as a backdrop for under $15. The people are incredibly friendly, but as with any poorer country it is wise to keep valuables secured. Check out the D’Talipapa for fresh seafood straight from the fishermen, and choose your cooking style from the restaurants there.

If you’re looking for soft sand beaches with gentle waves and warm seas all the while not breaking your budget, you’re looking for Sri Lanka. This tiny teardrop-shaped island in South Asia is often overlooked by beach-goers who instead flock to the overcrowded islands of Thailand and Bali.

But when it comes to picking the best beach in Sri Lanka  it comes down to personal preference. The entire southern coast of the country is packed with lovely stretches of sand. If you enjoy a cheap surf spot you might like Hiriketiya Beach.

As one of the cheapest island vacations on this list, the secret to traveling Sri Lanka on a budget is taking advantage of their massive public bus system. Oh, and staying in the cheap guesthouse scattered all over the country. Buses cost as little as $0.25 a ride (they pick you up anywhere along the road). You can score comfortable guesthouses for as little as $6 a night.

As for activities, you don’t need anything except a towel, a book, or maybe a surfboard rental ($3 for an hour). If you’re looking for a more active beach day, you can also rent snorkel gear to spot sea turtles, stingrays, and coral reefs far beneath you.

18. Koh Lipe, Thailand

cheapest island vacation koh lipe

Koh Lipe is a beautiful island in southern Thailand. With its picturesque beaches and unbelievably turquoise water, you could almost believe that you have actually landed in the Maldives. In contrast to travel destinations such as the Maldives, you can easily visit the island in  Thailand on a budget .

Especially during the rainy season, there are some huts right on the beach for little money. But even during the high season, an overnight stay here costs much less than in many other exotic beach destinations.

Koh Lipe is a relatively quiet island. So if you are looking for nightlife and full-moon parties, Koh Lipe might probably not be the right destination in Thailand for you. On the contrary, Koh Lipe is excellent for everyone who wants to spend a relaxing vacation on paradisiacal beaches. Koh Lipe is also a great fit as a honeymoon destination.

There are great opportunities for snorkeling, swimming, or even diving for those who are a little more active. There are also various tours on offer that you can take part in.

If you don’t want to spend money on tours, it’s worth bringing your own snorkel gear and swimming around the island. You’ll be able to discover a lot of exotic fish in the crystal clear water.

19. Bohol, Philippines (one of the best island vacations for cheap in Southeast Asia)

bohol philippines

Bohol is an island located in the Central Visayas region in the Philippines. While there are some better known destinations nearby like Boracay and Cebu, Bohol is equally as stunning while being a bit quieter and cheaper for tourists.

There’s a long list of activities that are unique to Bohol and are either free or inexpensive. The best known are the:

  • Tarsier Sanctuary (less than $2)
  • Chocolate Hills (free)
  • Hinagdanan Cave ($1)

Closer to the water there are also island hopping trips, snorkeling, dolphin watching, and some great beaches in every corner of the island.

The bus network will get you to all of these places. And while this will cost you less than $1 per trip, if the bus is full you may end up on the roof dodging tree branches….. not very safe, but it’s fun! Or you can negotiate with a taxi driver to just take you around for the day.

There’s a cluster of hotels, beaches and farms hidden away on a tiny adjacent (Panglao) Island just near Bohol airport. I’ve stayed at the Amarela Resort multiple times and while it’s a 4 star hotel Bohol prices are generally cheap and it’s worth treating yourself.

The hotel is quiet and relaxing, and has plenty of outdoor space. It opens up onto a beautiful white beach which is almost deserted most of the tim!.

Nearby you also have the Bohol Bee Farm which has some amazing food and honey products on sale. Plus a restaurant that overlooks the water looking back towards Amarela that is again very affordable.

20. Gili Trawangan, Indonesia

island vacations cheap gili trawangan

A tropical vacation is always the need of the hour. We all love whisking away to exotic islands with the bluest blue waters and a laid back yet fun island life. To top it off, a tropical paradise that doesn’t break the bank truly makes up for the perfect island escape.

One such affordable island getaway is jetting off to this place called Gili Trawangan. It sits on the northwest coast of Lombok in Indonesia. While here, your perfect  Gili Trawangan itinerary  must include swimming in clear waters of the Indian Ocean, lying on the beaches with the view of a volcanic mountain in the distance and diving in to swim with turtles .

This island is packed with activities. But at the same time, perfect for those who want to enjoy a quiet laid back island life. Being the biggest of the 3 Gili islands, there are plenty of accommodation options ranging from hostels to luxurious resorts for guests to take their pick.

The same goes for food choices as well to sit, sip, and devour delicious meals at restaurants or even beach shacks for a reasonable price. Cycle around the island during the day. End your nights with dinner under the stars along with open-air movie nights right on the beach.

This is one island getaway that’s truly an all-rounder, easy on the eyes and on the pocket too.

One more of the cheapest island vacations…

21. southport, tasmania.

Southport Beach Tasmania

The island of Tasmania has dozens of gorgeous beaches dotted around its coastline. Plenty are famous, like Boathouse Beach or Wineglass Bay, but when you ask a local where their favourite is for a  Tasmania road trip  then Southport Beach will be right at the top of the list!

It’s a real stunner, with soft, white sand stretching into the distance. Calm, cool waters are perfect for stand-up paddling and swimming. Families love the location because the water is so shallow and sheltered it’s perfect for kids to get their first taste of beach life.

It isn’t all about the beaches either, with beautiful caves located just 15 minutes away, immersive bushwalks through the rainforest, and even gem-fossicking in nearby Lune River.

Southport itself is a sleepy little ‘shack town’ where locals and visitors go to escape the rat race, unwind, and recharge. Forget luxury hotels and expensive high rises… Airbnbs are plentiful, with some so close to the water’s edge you can even go fishing from your front balcony! It’s the perfect way to do an island vacation for cheap!

Or for an even more cost-effective getaway you’ll love setting your tent or campervan up on the lush green grass of the Southport Hotel and Caravan Park. Whichever is your preference, make the most of off-season pricing. Plan your visit for autumn or spring when the weather is still great, but prices aren’t quite as high as at summer’s peak.

Dining options are limited to the Southport Hotel (great Aussie pub fare!) and self-catering – but that’s part of the charm of this quiet beachside town. No stress, no car horns, and plenty of relaxation at your own pace. And if you really need to try something new then you can always drive 20 minutes up the road to Dover where you’ll find plenty more options.

If you love the quiet life then you’ll love a Southport Beach escape!

After a bumpy 2020 many of us can’t wait to flop on a tropical beach, glass of fresh mango juice (or something stronger) in hand. There’s nothing like snorkeling on a coral reef to bring down your stress levels. While many people worry about the cost of an exotic vacation, some hotels and airlines are offering incentives such as lower prices and zero cancellation fees to encourage more visitors. Here are some of the best cheap tropical vacation destinations open for business in 2021.

Editor’s note: Save these ideas for when it’s safe to travel again, and always follow all COVID-19 restrictions, rules and safety regulations both at your destination and upon returning home.

With most cruise ship schedules on hold until at least April 2021, the second busiest cruise destination in the world is attempting to fill up its hotels by offering rooms at up to 30 percent lower than normal. The lush Mexican Caribbean island is fringed by excellent snorkeling sites and the ruins of a Maya temple is tucked away in the heart of it.

If you have a few extra hours to spare, you can save even more money by flying to Cancun airport rather than Cozumel airport, then taking a luxury ADO bus ($15) from the airport to Playa del Carmen (65 minutes), where you can hop on a fast ferry to Cozumel ($14 Tourist Ticket, 20 minutes).

Where to stay: The Explorean Cozumel is an affordable choice (often with big discounts on rooms), and with food and beverages included in the rates, it’s a steal.

Having been battered by two back-to-back hurricanes in 2020, Honduras is facing a long recovery period and so is very keen to see tourist dollars flowing back in. This is a destination where you get a lot of value for money at the best of times, with four-star rooms for under $100. But some Honduras hotels are offering excellent deals in 2021 including up to 20 percent off regular rates.

Tourism hubs like Roatan island (40 miles off the mainland) offer beautiful beaches, coral reefs, sloth tours and rum tastings.

Where to stay: Check out Paradise Beach Hotel ’s cute clusters of guestrooms, villas and suites on the beachfront, surrounded by palm trees and pools. The hotel frequently offers discounts and cheap packages.

‘Done’ the Caribbean and want to see something new? Then Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) could be your next big adventure. According to a recent report , Cabo Verde is eager to entice travelers after being hit hard by a drop in tourism last year. If you’re working remotely or looking for a long stay trip, you’re in luck – they’ve launched new work visas that allow you to stay for up to six months.

But whether you’re heading to Cabo Verde for six months or six nights, you’ll easily find accommodation for under $100 a night. Turquoise lagoons and creole culture await you on these ten volcanic islands. Head to Boa Vista island (Portuguese for ‘good view’) for laid-back vibes and pristine golden sands.

Where to stay: Some of the hotels are closed until more tourists venture back but things are starting to pick up. Ouril Hotel Agueda is a solid three-star hotel near the sea with a rooftop bar. Rooms are under $100 a night and currently there’s 25 percent off.

Recently Grenada has totally revamped its tourism framework “to competitively position Grenada with target audiences”.  That’s good news for bargain-hunters and those who appreciate natural attractions such as white sand beaches, waterfalls and reefs will love it. The islands are also famous for their spices, so spice tours should also be added to any foodies’ Grenada bucket list.

The tourist board has launched a heap of deals and incentives, including discounts on rum tours, spa day passes, outdoor adventures and scuba diving experiences.

Where to stay: Check out the three-star Sea Breeze Hotel for a simple affordable option (under $80/night) just four minutes’ walk from the beach

You can usually get the best deals on flights to Thailand by booking at least one month in advance, but this year many routes are almost half price if you use a bargain flight site to book, such as CheapOair . Once you’ve grabbed a flight deal, you’ll find everything in Thailand is incredibly cheap.

For blissful beach vibes, fly to Koh Samui or Phuket, or if jungle is your thing, head to Chiang Mai. If you’ve seen The Beach , the filming location, Phi Phi Lei (scheduled to reopen this year after extensive conservation works) is a must-see. You can’t stay on this protected island, but you can book a trip/hire a taxi boat to take you there from Phi Phi Don, Krabi, Ao Nang or any of the other neighboring tourism hotspots.

Where to stay: On Koh Phi Phi Don (‘Big Phi Phi Island) try the contemporary Thai three-star, Phi Phi Island Cabana Resort , with excellent views of the beach and sublime limestone cliffs for around $60 per night.

The maldives.

cheap tropical travel destinations

This Indian Ocean archipelago has a reputation for sky-high prices but don’t let that put you off. “Many resorts have slashed prices by as much as 30 to 60 percent and some resort brands, such as Villa Hotels, are also offering extra perks like upgrades and kids stay free, to attract more visitors”, explains Maldives travel specialist, Liswith Obinamuni, of Desti Asia .

You can now bag a three-star Maldives private island resort for as little as $137 per night, while airlines such as Qatar are tempting travelers with unlimited date changes, fee-free refunds and special online fares. Visit during the (surprisingly light) rainy season, May to September, for even lower rates.

To save even more cash, check out for this lesser-known option: Hotel rooms located in island villages (known locally as ‘guesthouses’, but more like boutique hotels) start at $50 per night. Take a public ferry to your island for just $3-5 (compared to $200 for resort transfers) and eat at local restaurants for under $10/meal.

Where to stay: The new Amaya Kuda Rah four-star private island resort is currently 51 percent cheaper than normal. It’s located in South Ari Atoll, which has some of the best scuba diving in the country.

With US airlines expanding their routes to the Domincan Republic, you can expect a slew of deals to follow. American Airlines is launching a new route on June 5 from Charlotte, NC, to El Catey, while budget operator, Spirit Airlines, has just launched routes between Orlando, FL, and Punta Cana. Not to be left out, Frontier Airlines is increasing the number of flights it offers between Miami and Punta Cana from March.

While the tropical nation is known for its beaches, golf courses and resorts, it also has rainforests, savannah and highlands (including Pico Duarte, the tallest mountain in the Caribbean) to tempt outdoor adventurers, as well as 500-year old Spanish landmarks like the gothic cathedral in Santo Domingo.

Where to stay: Dreams Palm Beach Punta Cana is a great option for an affordable but upscale beachfront resort, with frequent discounts, a huge beach and attractive freeform pools for lazy lounging.

This lush island is consistently rated as one of the Caribbean’s most affordable destinations. Despite being a popular pitstop for cruise ships (during normal conditions) and having featured in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, Dominica has not been ruined by over-tourism. In the untouched interior, over 350 waterfalls and rivers surrounded by thick jungle beckons hikers, rock climbers and kayakers.

But those who enjoy a slower pace of life will love the eco cottages, boutique hotels and private villas (in contrast to the big flashy resorts of other Caribbean islands). The golden beaches are framed by soaring cliffs and mountains rather than high-rise hotels.

Where to stay :  Simple, friendly and for under $60/night, Soufriere Guesthouse ticks a lot of boxes for good value budget accommodation. It’s in easy reach of diving and snorkeling sites, as well as hiking trails.

Jetblue is another budget airline launching low-cost flights to a new tropical destination this year. The new routes will link Boston, LA and New York City with Guatemala City.

This more under-the-radar tropical destination has oodles to offer – from beaches and lakes to volcanoes, jungle and Maya ruins. And there’s even more good news. Major international hotel brands such as Hilton and Hyatt have rooms in Guatemala City for around $100 per night, or less. Accomodation rates on the coast are often at an even lower price-point.

Where to stay: Head to Izabal department for manatees, beaches and rivers. Discover the adorable coconut-thatch villas of Nanajuana Río Dulce , between the rainforest and the river. It even has its own marina – but rooms are less than $70 per night.

Quintana Roo

cheap tropical travel destinations

This state on the Yucatan Peninsula, where the South Atlantic turns into the Caribbean Sea, always has plenty of affordable accommodation options and is served by many low-cost flights from the US. But in 2021, even more deals abound than normal. Lizzie Cole of the Quintana Roo Consejo de Promoción Turística tells us: “The hotels have implemented different strategies, some offering special packages at better rates, kids-stay-free promotions and others even adding a complimentary night,” in Quintana Roo’s major tourism hubs including Costa Mujeres, Cancun and the Riviera Maya. Due to these promotions, travelers are booking even longer stays than they normally do, she adds.

Highlights of the ‘Mexican Caribbean’ include world-class dive sites, white sand beaches, the ruins of Maya temples, mystical cenotes and quality adventure parks .

Where to stay: The all-inclusive beachfront Iberostar Selection Paraiso Maya with nine pools and a slow-river is one of the many hotels in the region with sizzling deals, and being all-inclusive you’ll save even more cash.

Bonaire street

By Sabrina from Shades of Summr

Bonaire is an amazing tropical destination for couples – especially when traveling on a budget.

The beautiful, small Caribbean island is located right off the coast of Venezuela and forms together with Aruba and Curacao the ABC-island chain. It is also the cheapest one to visit from these three islands.

Despite being a very small island, Bonaire has a lot to offer. The marine life around Bonaire’s coast is pristine. Snorkeling is therefore an amazing, budget-friendly activity when visiting Bonaire.

The Washington Slagbaai National Park is another great place to visit in Bonaire on a budget. The entrance fee is only a few dollars , and it is totally worth it.  The national park has three beautiful beaches , Boca Cocolishi, Boca Slagbaai, and Playa Funchi. Boca Cocolishi is especially popular among tourists because it has a black sand beach with lava-formed pools.

The capital city of Kralendijk is another great place to visit. The houses there are colorful and the atmosphere is upbeat. Kaya Grandi is the main shopping street in Kralendijk, there are restaurants, shops, and cafes.

Bonaire is a great destination to visit year-round. The weather is pretty stable and it is located outside the hurricane belt. Try to avoid going during Dutch school holidays, the island will be very crowded then. It is also a lot cheaper to go outside these times.

The Ocean View Villas in Bonaire is a great place to stay for couples on a budget . The hotel is located right by the famous Bachelor’s beach and has everything to offer vacationers might need.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Puerto Vallarta at dusk

By Erin from Pina Travels

Puerto Vallarta is a budget-friendly resort town on Mexico’s Pacific coast. This small city is known for its beaches, water sports, restaurant, and nightlife scene .

Puerto Vallarta has its own airport, making it easy to reach by plane. There are also bus connections to Puerto Vallarta from other parts of Mexico.

In Puerto Vallarta, there’s a range of accommodation styles and prices. Couples can check into affordable hotels like Hotel Rosita . There, you have access to great amenities , and you’re in a good location for exploring the city.

For the best rates, travel to Puerto Vallarta in the low season, which runs from July through September.

While it’s known for being a beach destination, Puerto Vallarta is also the perfect city to explore on foot. You’ll come across beautiful architecture, little museums, parks, markets, and art galleries .

There are plenty of affordable things to do in Puerto Vallarta for couples , from lounging on the beach to eating local dishes in taquerias like Taqueria De Birria El Banquito .

To get out of the city and see some of Jalisco’s coastline, go on a day trip hike from Boca de Tomatlan to Las Animas . This trail near Puerto Vallarta takes you from the small fishing village Boca de Tomatlan, along the coast, to a beautiful beach called Playa Las Animas. Along the way, you’ll get to enjoy secluded beaches and swimming . Aside from taking a taxi to and from Boca de Tomatlan, this day trip is totally free!

Beach in Nicaragua

By Roshni from The Wanderlust Within

One of the best budget choices for a romantic tropical vacation has to be the Central American gem of Nicaragua.

Famous for its amazing surf spots, explosive volcanoes, and incredibly colorful cities , it is one of the best places for couples to enjoy an adventure together. There are plenty of  beautiful beaches in Nicaragua , on both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts of the country, with the most popular being San Juan del Sur . It is also one of the best surf spots , and home to Dreamsea Surf , an affordable and beautiful place to stay on the coast.

Nicaragua is also a great place for well-priced adventure activities especially compared to its more popular neighbor, Costa Rica. You can visit the colonial city of Granada , which is surrounded by unique islets (small islands) that can be explored by kayak or stand-up paddle board .

Or you can explore the city of Leon and try your hand at volcano boarding . This unique activity only takes place here, and nowhere else in the world, but first, you do need to hike to the top of Cerro Negro volcano with a board!

Another option is to visit Masaya Volcano , which is one of the few places in the world where you can safely see an active lava lake bubbling away.

Huatulco, Oaxaca, Mexico

Playa Violin, Huatulco, Mexico

By Julien from Oaxaca Travel Tips

Known for more than 30 tropical beaches tucked inside its 9 bays that sweep along the rugged coast, Huatulco, Mexico is a top tropical vacation spot for couples on a budget.

Bordered by Huatulco National Park , this small town has a low-key resort vibe with secluded beaches. In fact, if you’re looking for a quiet, unspoiled stretch of coast, you’ll find the best beaches in Huatulco inside the park.

To explore the beaches when you first arrive, take a boat and snorkeling tour of the bays of Huatulco . In the following days, you’ll be able to return to your favorite beaches or explore new ones together.

Once you’ve had enough time in the sun and sand, plan to visit the nearby mountains for an adventure to the Copalita waterfalls or a coffee farm in Pluma Hidalgo . All of these affordable tours are a great way to explore the area and enjoy time together.

While planning your trip to Huatulco in winter will save you from the oppressive heat and humidity of summer, it’s also the high season and prices increase accordingly.

You’ll be able to save money on your accommodation by visiting during the shoulder seasons around November and March . Keep in mind, hotel prices in Huatulco also increase during the Christmas holidays and Easter when national tourists flock to the coast of Oaxaca.

For a modern hotel with ocean views at a great rate , book a King room at  Camino Real Zaashila Huatulco . If you prefer to stay in the center of town, Hotel Maria Mixteca is a classic hotel for a more modest budget.

The easiest way to get to Huatulco is to fly into the Huatulco International Airport which has incoming flights from Dallas, Toronto, Mexico City, Monterrey, and Oaxaca City.

Tulum, Mexico

Playa Paraiso in Tulum

By Mal of Raw Mal Roams

One of the best tropical vacation spots for couples in Mexico, Tulum has so much to offer, from its stunning beaches and unique cenotes to its incredible Maya ruins and rich cultural heritage . And the best part is that Tulum can totally be done on a budget!

If you’re looking for affordable things to do in Tulum , start off by exploring the local Maya ruins such as Tulum Ruins, Coba, and the more off-the-beaten-track, Muyil Ruins. This is a great way to experience the area’s rich cultural heritage, and the tickets are normally only a few dollars .

Tulum has tones of incredible cenotes , many of which can be visited on a bicycle ! Check out Cenote Cristal and Cenote Escondido , where you can bring your own picnic and spend an incredible day swimming, snorkeling, and jumping into the refreshing crystal-clear water .

Finally, make sure you enjoy the stunning Tulum beaches , which boast azure water and picture-perfect white powdery sand. Playa Paraiso is one of the most beautiful public beaches.

If you’re looking for affordable resorts in Tulum for couples , forget about staying by the beach. Instead, check out hotels in Aldea Zama or downtown Tulum , which offer much better value for money, such as Villas Geminis Boutique Condohotel .

Staying in the center will also give you a wider selection of places to eat, and there is no lack of excellent vegan and vegetarian restaurants such as Raw Love, El Bajon Vegan Tacos, or Vegan Tulum.

Tulum is located 118 km south of Cancun International Airport, and the best way to get there is to take an ADO bus from the airport.

The best time to visit Tulum to avoid the crowds and cheaper rates are the shoulder months of November and May.

Drake Bay, Costa Rica

Drake Bay, Costa Rica

By Lori from Travlinmad

For many couples, a tropical getaway usually means a cruise, a pricey luxury resort, or an even pricier “all-inclusive” vacation. For couples wanting a romantic destination that is kinder to their budget but still offers lush tropical surroundings, the perfect destination is Drake Bay, Costa Rica .

Drake Bay is located in the northwest corner of the remote Osa Peninsula . Getting there isn’t hard but does require some advance planning. Most visitors fly into Juan Santamaria Airport and then take a commuter flight to Drake Bay Airport. Most ecolodges will arrange transportation from the airport to your accommodations.

There is much to do in Drake Bay for couples. As part of the Osa, this area is a rustic natural wonderland . Hiking, snorkeling or diving in the pristine clear ocean, birding , and watching monkeys and coatimundis forage are popular pastimes.

Secluded beaches that, except for the scarlet macaws, you will have all to yourself are a perfect complement for any romantic afternoon. Your hotel or lodge can even provide you with a light lunch to have a private picnic on the beach.

The best time to visit Drake Bay is during the dry season, from December through April. Costa Rica is in the tropics which means it gets a lot of rain during the rest of the year.

There are a number of excellent ecolodges at Drake Bay, but for couples on a budget wanting a romantic destination, Las Caletas Lodge is very popular.

Drake Bay in Costa Rica is a perfect and secluded romantic tropical destination for couples on a budget . Pura Vida!

San Blas, Panama

By Pamela from The Directionally Challenged Traveler

One of the most overlooked, budget-friendly tropical destinations in the world is Panama . At the bottom of Central America, this country offers visitors a wide array of experiences at a fraction of the cost of other tropical destinations.

Start your journey in Panama City, the capital city that is constantly buzzing with action. From the skyscraper buildings to the food trucks on the ground, you’ll be in awe at all this city has to offer.

Take a day trip to the Panama Canal and enjoy the impressive engineering. You may even get to see wild monkeys or the hundreds of species of birds that call this area home.

In the city, you’ll find plenty of things to do in Casco Viejo , the old Panama City. From exploring ruins to shopping at Plaza Francia, you’ll learn a lot about the history of Panama. Check out the well-rated Hotel Marbella for an easy place to explore the city – for under $50/night.

If you’ve always wanted to stay in an over-the-sea bungalow , then head to the San Blas Islands . A bungalow here costs around $200 a night instead of thousands like other tropical destinations (there are also other bungalows for cheaper).

Not only will you be able to enjoy pristine white beaches and coral reefs , but you can also learn about the indigenous Kuna culture . If you can’t stay on the island, some hotels will coordinate a day trip for you.

Panama’s variety of activities makes it one of the best budget tropical destinations for couples.

Northern Colombia

Tayrona National Park Colombia

By Claire from Tales of a Backpacker

Colombia is a unique destination for couples on a budget.  The country as a whole is very affordable , but the Caribbean Coast and Northern Colombia are one of the most romantic places to visit and have plenty to keep you busy without breaking the bank .

Don’t miss visiting Tayrona National Park , one of the highlights of the region with incredible beaches and an option to hike through the forest to visit an indigenous settlement and spot howler monkeys and endangered cotton-top tamarins in the trees.

Choose one of the beachfront hotels in Tayrona park  for a perfect romantic hideaway , such as the Ecolodge Playa Brava Teyumakke , or rent a hammock for a night.

Adventurous couples might choose to do the Lost City hike , a 4-day trek through the jungle to reach the ruins of a city built by the Teyuna people around 800 AD , then abandoned after the Spanish Conquest and lost to outsiders until the 1970s.

End your romantic trip with a stay in Cartagena . Cartagena is more expensive due to its popularity with cruise ship passengers, but there are still great value accommodation options here such as Casa India Catalina .

There are plenty of cheap and free activities in Cartagena too, including exploring the historic old town and spotting street art in the colorful Getsemaní neighborhood , as well as visiting the Gold Museum , and taking in a spectacular sunset from a bar on the Old Town walls.

To get here, take a flight to Cartagena or Santa Marta before traveling to Tayrona, tours to the Lost City depart from Santa Marta. Cartagena is well connected with flights and cruise ships stopping here.

Placencia, Belize

Placencia Beach, Belize

By Nikki from She Saves She Travels

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly romantic tropical vacation , then consider Placencia, Belize. Located in the southern part of Belize right along the Caribbean Sea, this charming little town has so much going for it!

This little beach town hasn’t yet become one of the hot spots in Belize. It’s not nearly as popular as Caye Caulker or San Pedro, so it’s under the radar for most tourists, keeping the prices low . For less than $100 USD a night, couples can rent a basic bungalow literally right on the beach!

There are plenty of things to do in Placencia and nearby tours you could take to explore the area and learn about the culture, too.

Take a chocolate-making class , go snorkeling at Laughing Bird Caye , or go hiking to a waterfall at Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary . Of course, one of the best ways for couples to keep their vacation budget-friendly is spending time on the beautiful beaches, which are free!

To get to Placencia, you can fly into Belize City and take a public bus or rent a car . Renting a car will provide the best flexibility, and a US driver’s license is valid in Belize.

The best time to visit is April-May or November to avoid the rainy season and take advantage of the best pricing.

Goa, India

By Paul D’Souza from Paulmarina

Goa is a small special state in India, known for its diverse culture, lovely people, wonderful beaches, vivid nightlife, and exceptional food. It’s one of the best tropical vacation spots for couples on a budget!

The beaches in northern Goa and the south are known to be visitor-friendly, and they are most definitely a fun place to be. The beach shacks invite one to hang out day and night and some also organize special live music events and electronic music parties.

Couples can either join in the fun or work on themselves with a free yoga or meditation session at the beach while the waves create a relaxing atmosphere.

Food lovers will appreciate healthier and often very budget-friendly meals such as the Goan coconut curry with locally grown rice and spiced vegetable stir-fries .

Couples can explore the churches of old Goa or the ancient Hindu temple of Mahadev Tambdi Surla , to learn about the rich history of this state and its Portuguese influences.

Goa has now two international airports, so getting into this lovely sunny state has never been easier. Travelers can take a direct flight into Goa or travel from Delhi or Mumbai and then take a train or another flight to Goa. It is advised to book a government-approved taxi at the airport to get to your guesthouse.

Peak season starts in November and ends beginning March. The cheapest time to visit is perhaps in the very hot summer months or in the monsoon from April to November. Summers are very humid and hot but tropical fruits are plentiful in this season. The monsoon season, on the other hand, is very wet, and occasionally, it rains buckets for days, so this has to be considered when booking cheaper tickets and rooms.

Look out for rooms away from the beach because those tend to be more budget-friendly . Homestay rooms at Airbnb, such as The Three Rooms in Anjuna, are well-located and include all the basic amenities such as solar-powered hot water, power backup, and high-speed internet.

For a well-rated and affordable accommodation option right next to the beach, check out the 21IN Guest House .

El Nido, Palawan, Philippines

El Nido, Palawan, Philippines

By David & Intan from The World Travel Guy

The tropical island of El Nido Palawan in the Philippines has been rated as one of the most beautiful islands in the world , and for good reasons. It’s famous for its stunning scenery , with bright turquoise water and jagged limestone mountains . This province also includes the scenic island of Coron , which is known for scuba diving and beaches .

In spite of its status as a bucket list location, El Nido is surprisingly budget-friendly . Joining a boat tour with a group can be relatively inexpensive , and the beaches in mainland Palawan are free to visit . All you need to do is rent a motorbike or hire a taxi to take you there.

You can get to El Nido Palawan by flying to Manila international airport , and then taking a short domestic fligh t to the small airport in El Nido. The other option is to fly to Puerto Princesa and take a van to El Nido . This takes longer, but it’s a bit cheaper than flying directly.

For couples wanting romance, you can go on a private boat tour or enjoy the sunset at Las Cabanas or Corong Corong Beach .

A great hotel option for couples is South Anchorage Inn , which is located near everything you need.

The weather in El Nido is always warm, but generally, the best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from January to April . It’s almost always very sunny and nice in these months!

Koh Rong, Cambodia

Koh Rong, Cambodia

By Alex and Leah from Alex And Leah On Tour

One of the most inexpensive tropical destinations for couples is Koh Rong in Cambodia.

Situated in Cambodia’s south, Koh Rong is one of the most picturesque islands you’ll ever visit. Complete with turquoise water and white sandy beaches , this is a perfect destination for couples looking to enjoy the island life. Whether it’s scuba diving or swimming in the bioluminescent plankton , there are tons you can do here as a couple!

The best way of getting here is by taking a shuttle bus from Siem Reap or Phnom Penh directly to Sihanoukville Port . From here, there are loads of ferry companies that’ll take you directly to Long Set Beach pier on Koh Rong.

Top tip: Do not spend any time in Sihanoukville. Whilst it once was a great place to explore, it’s now a ghost time thanks to Chinese companies buying up swaths of land and turning the city into a construction site.

The weather here is absolutely fantastic! Whilst you will experience some torrential showers, this is likely to only occur at night and last for short periods. The rest of the time, however,  it’ll be hard to spot a single cloud in the sky, it’s that good!

The peak season for visitors on Koh Rong and Cambodia is between December and February when it’s not the rainy season but it also hasn’t reached the ridiculous summer temperatures that come in April.

The best way to save money is by booking accommodation early and eating traditional food at local restaurants.

When visiting Koh Rong, the only place you should stay is at Nest Beach Club . This is the only hostel on the island and due to its location on the beachfront , it’s extremely popular. With its own restaurant and private bungalows on the beach , Nest hosts its own “Nestival” every Saturday which includes games, a BBQ, and a lot of fun!

Koh Lanta, Thailand

Nui Bay, Koh Lanta, Thailand

By Lena from Not Another Backpacker

Secluded white beaches, turquoise-blue water, and spectacular sunsets . Doesn’t that sound like the perfect destination for a tropical romantic getaway ?

Koh Lanta in Southern Thailand offers just that! Although the island is one of the largest in the area, it’s still not as crowded as other vacation spots in the country . Instead of loud parties and obnoxious tourist crowds, you’ll find a quiet island that is mostly visited by families and young couples.

You can spend days on Koh Lanta just relaxing in hammocks while sipping fresh coconut water, swimming in the warm water, exploring the island on a scooter, or watching the sunset from the beach.

In the northern part of Koh Lanta, you can also chill out in laid-back beach bars and along the entire West Coast, you’ll find great ocean-view restaurants offering fruity cocktails and amazing Thai curries with local vegetables.

When booking accommodation, it’s recommended to choose a place in the center or south of Koh Lanta. While the northern part of the island is busier, the south is home to more beautiful and also more secluded beaches .

If you want the best of both worlds, stay in Tum Mai Kaew Resort, which is one of the best and cheapest hotels in Koh Lanta ! It’s located near Klong Nin Beach in the center of Koh Lanta, which is a good starting point to explore the island. Not to mention that the resort offers spacious, cozy rooms and an outdoor pool for an amazingly low price!

If you’re traveling on a tight budget, you can also save plenty of money by avoiding the peak season from Christmas to March and traveling during the shoulder season instead, when accommodation prices are lower. Other than that, Koh Lanta is already a very affordable island to visit.

So, if you’re wondering where to go for a budget-friendly and romantic vacation, start packing your bags. Koh Lanta may be just what you’re looking for!

Bali, Indonesia

Bali, Indonesia, Tegallalang Rice Terrace

By Jackie and Justin from Life Of Doing

Bali is an ideal destination for couples who are on a budget and want to travel to a dreamy tropical place .

Whether you want to relax on the beach, explore temples, wander through waterfalls, or see gorgeous landscape views , there are many budget-friendly activities that are suitable for couples. Many attractions require a small admission fee (up to $5 USD per person), so choose the places you want to visit.

If you’re already hanging out at the beach, stay to watch the sunset, especially in the Seminyak area. Bali’s sunsets are gorgeous with pink and purple skies.

Bali doesn’t have a shortage of waterfalls, so choose one or two to visit on your visit. Sekumpul Waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls with large cascades.

If you’re seeking beautiful landscape views to take photos of, head to popular spots such as Tegallalang Rice Terraces, Lempuyang Temple, or the top of Mount Batur.

The weather is warm and humid all year, so it’s a nice place to visit at any time . The rainy season is from November to March but don’t let that deter you. With the occasional rain, it’s a good excuse to hang out at a cafe and relax until the rain stops.

Bali has many areas to stay depending on your interest. Seminyak is a trendy area with beach clubs, shopping, and cute cafes. Canggu is a popular area to go cafe hopping. Ubud is a peaceful area surrounded by luscious jungles and rice terraces.

If you’re staying in Ubud, Omank Agus Homestay is a recommended place to stay. It’s a small homestay located within a 5 to 10-minute walk to cafes and tons of restaurants. A hearty breakfast is also served in front of your room.

Krabi, Thailand

Railay Bay, Krabi, Thailand

By Jürgen from Places Of Juma

One of the most romantic and affordable tropical places to visit as a couple is definitely Krabi in Thailand . Especially for first-time visitors to Thailand, this magical Thai destination will be your favorite. Located in southern Thailand, more precisely on the Andaman Sea, this beautiful region is easily accessible by plane from Bangkok.

It is famous for its wildly romantic landscapes with captivating rugged limestone cliffs, dense green jungle, snow-white sandy beaches, turquoise sea, and stunning islands ! For a wonderful couple’s getaway, the resorts of Ao Nang and picturesque Klong Muang are especially recommended.

During a visit to Krabi, there are many sights to see. Railay Beach and Phra Nang Beach are both world-renowned and popular with couples . There you will also find the Princess Cave , a fertility shrine with numerous phallic symbols.

From there, you can also take a cheap boat trip to the outlying islands of Koh Hong, Koh Poda, and Chicken Island. The latter is home to the Chicken Head Rock.

But that’s not all! Sporty couples can also go kayaking, explore the mangrove forests, hike to viewpoints, swim in the Emerald Pool, or climb the countless steps of the high Tiger Cave Temple .

The best time to visit Krabi is from December to April. During this period you can expect a lot of sun and little rain.

Krabi’s many beautiful hotels are excellent value for money. The Bhu Nga Thani Resort & Spa is highly recommended with its pool and great location on the beach.

sigiriya, sri lanka

By Cecilie from Worldwide Walkers

One of the best budget-friendly vacation spots for couples who want to travel to Asia is without a doubt Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is known for its extraordinary nature, diverse wildlife, and tropical beaches – most of which you can experience for free or at a very small price.

Some of the best things to do are hiking to the top of Pidurangala Rock to watch the sun sets over the jungle, immersing yourself in the incredible landscapes of tea plants at Nuwara Eliya , and swimming in the Indian Ocean of the tropical beaches in the South Coast.

All the while you’re traveling through Sri Lanka, you can be sure to experience some incredible wildlife encounters such as seeing wild monkeys, peacocks, lizards, and many other animals that roam the island freely – so make sure to bring binoculars on this trip.

There are honestly so many reasons why you should visit Sri Lanka , but one of the biggest is that it’s a budget-friendly destination . The local food is very affordable, taking the public transportation costs next to nothing, and it’s easy to find cheap accommodation across the island.

One of the most affordable and romantic places you can stay at as a couple is Paradise Inn in Sigiriya. Here you can wake up for sunrise with your special someone and hear the jungle wake up all the while you have incredible views over the rice fields and UNESCO site Sigiriya Rock Fortress . It doesn’t get better than that.

Zanzibar, Tanzania

Beach in Zanzibar

By Joanna from The World In My Pocket

Zanzibar is one of the most romantic destinations in Africa . Located off the coast of Tanzania, Zanzibar has been for a long time a honeymoon destination, especially for couples who can’t afford the Maldives or French Polynesia.

For a more budget-friendly option, choose to stay in the east of the island . The north of the island is where all the big resorts are, which are also very expensive. The east is as beautiful as the north, but the prices are much lower. Check out the beautiful and affordable Promised Land Lodge with its pool, private beach area, and ocean view rooms.

A great thing to do in Zanzibar is to go snorkeling . There are many different options for this activity. One of the more affordable options includes going on a dhow – a traditional boat without an engine used for fishing, but also for taking tourists on snorkeling excursions.

One of the most affordable romantic things to do in Zanzibar is going on a spice tour . Zanzibar is also known as the spice island because of the high number of different spices that grow here. Don’t be shy about stocking up on some black pepper, nutmeg, and cloves.

Watching the sunrise and the sunset from your resort are among the free things you can do in Zanzibar. Grab a glass of champagne or a cocktail from the bar and enjoy a serene moment alongside your loved one.

Mountain Views in Mauritius

By Megan from Megan Starr

Mauritius is an exciting island to explore that isn’t on most people’s radar. Enjoy gorgeous beaches, hiking, and exploring the towns , during a romantic vacation that won’t break the bank.

You can get a true taste of Port Louis, the island nation’s capital, by visiting the Port Louis Central Market , where you’ll find fresh fruits, vegetables, spices, souvenirs, crafts, and food stalls. Take a stroll through Chinatown and enjoy the colorful murals that now adorn many of the walls of the district.

There are also quite a few free-entrance historic buildings to visit in Port Louis , including Aapravasi Ghat , the old immigration port now inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list, or Fort Adelaide , which gives you beautiful views over the city, port, and mountains.

Mauritius also has fantastic wilderness areas to explore , one of its jewels being the Black River Gorge National Park . This park (located in the southern part of the island and has free entrance) is full of lush landscapes, waterfalls, native animals, and hiking trails , and visiting it is one of the best things to do in Mauritius .

Of course, you can’t go to Mauritius without spending time at its jaw-dropping tropical beaches , with stunning crystal clear waters and soft sand. Some of the most beloved beaches include Flic En Flac, Grand Baie, and the Ile aux Cerfs .

Many tour companies offer day tours to Ile aux Cerfs that include lunch, but to save some money, you could pack a picnic and take the public ferry to the island instead of booking a tour.

Mauritius also has the advantage of amazing accommodations at affordable prices . There are wonderful guest houses you can get a room at if you’re looking for something on a small budget, but there are also some quite affordable all-inclusive options as well! If you’re looking for something on the affordable side of all-inclusive, check out the Sunrise Attitude hotel in Belle Mare.

Madeira, Portugal

Madeira Coast Line

By Jasmine from The Life of a Social Butterfly

If you’re looking for exotic destinations for a romantic getaway, look no further than Madeira. Madeira is often referred to as a European Hawaii due to its sub-tropical climate, which makes it ideal for couples seeking a budget-friendly tropical destination .

It’s cheaper to visit Madeira between November – March (excluding the Christmas holidays ), though this is also when you are most likely to encounter more rainfall.

A week in Madeira is ideal to see the best of this Portuguese archipelago, and a break here can be as exciting or as relaxing as you would like it to be. Savoy Signature Hotels are a popular choice on the island for a luxury stay with numerous pools to choose from, with Hotel Next an ideal choice for younger couples. It is one of the most affordable options and has a rooftop pool overlooking Funchal Harbour.

Funchal, Madeira’s capital is a great place to drink poncha (Madeira’s fruit-flavored rum), admire the plethora of painted doors located in the Old Town , and take a cable car to Monte Palace botanical gardens . On the way back down, you have the option to take Madeira’s famous wooden sled ride , where you can also purchase a photo souvenir.

Madeira is a paradise for nature lovers with many natural pools, black sand beaches, and levada walks leading to Madeira’s array of waterfalls. Why not enjoy a sunrise jeep tour to Pico de Ariero , which has stunning views of the sunrise above the clouds and will give you memories to cherish for years to come.

Frontier Launching 3 New Routes To Tropical Destinations This Summer

Want to score cheap flights to exciting beachfront destinations this summer?

Frontier Airlines just announced 3 new routes that will have you packing your bags ASAP.

Frontier might not be the most luxurious airline, but their cheap flights make exploring on a budget easier than ever.

They offer a no-frills approach that means air travel is increasingly accessible.

And now the ultra-low-cost carrier is expanding its schedule to introduce 3 new exciting routes this summer, according to their recent press release .

This is what you need to know about Frontier Airlines new summer schedule:

Flights To Los Cabos, Mexico

The first new service Frontier is introducing is between Phoenix and Los Cabos.

This service will launch on May 16 and operate twice a week.

Los Cabos airport acts as the main air travel gateway to the increasingly popular destinations within the Los Cabos region, making this an incredibly desirable flight route.

Although ticket prices vary wildly depending on when you book and when you want to travel, Frontier is offering an introductory fare of $89 each way on this route.

Why Visit Los Cabos?

Los Cabos is home to some of the most beautiful resorts in Mexico and is a great spot for both luxury travelers and families hoping to relax on its white sand beaches.

Los Cabos's marine life is some of the best in Mexico and the world, so the region attracts snorkelers, scuba divers, and deep-sea fishing fans.

It is one of the best places to spot whales between early December and mid-April.

It is understandable that Frontier would choose Los Cabos for its newest Mexican route, as it is one of Mexico's most iconic tourist destinations.

Los Cabos has a well-deserved reputation for being a great place to relax and unwind.

Some of the best things to see and do in Los Cabos include taking a boat ride to explore the region's unique geologic formations or wandering the city's historic Distrito del Arte with its picturesque cobblestoned streets.

Foodies will rejoice here as the dining experiences are exceptional, and farm-to-table dining is a common occurrence that adds an extra element of luxury to your meal.

Flights To San Juan, Puerto Rico

The next 2 new routes being introduced by Frontier are going to the same destination which shows just how popular travel to San Juan is right now.

After a significant hiatus, Frontier will introduce a new service from Newark Liberty International Airport to San Juan on June 27.

This route will operate a whopping 11 times per week each way.

For the first time ever, Frontier is launching a flight out of New York JFK airport.

This flight will also fly to San Juan starting on June 6 and will operate twice daily in each direction.

Again, fares vary, and it's important to remember that Frontier is an ultra-low-cost carrier and will charge extra for things like carrying luggage, choosing your seat, and priority boarding.

However, one-way introductory fares for both of these routes will start from $59 each.

Why Visit San Juan?

Puerto Rico has exploded in popularity as a tourist destination, particularly among American travelers.

In 2023, the destination broke its all-time tourist record by welcoming over 6.1 million passengers.

Because Puerto Rico is a U.S. overseas territory, American citizens don't need a passport to visit.

You can use any form of government-issued ID, like your driver's license, instead.

This means that visiting Puerto Rico is easy and straightforward, as well as a popular choice for U.S. citizens who want to vacation in the Caribbean without the hassle of applying for a passport.

San Juan , the largest city in Puerto Rico and its capital, is the most popular tourist destination . And it's easy to see why.

San Juan offers beautiful beaches with calm, crystal-clear waters that are perfect for swimming.

The lively Condado Beach is one of the most popular of these, while Balneario del Escambron is great for snorkeling and diving and is popular with the locals.

Other attractions worth exploring in San Juan include the city's architecture and learning more about its rich history.

The Museo de Las Americas is a particularly fascinating spot for both history buffs and art lovers.

Itching to book your getaway? Head to Frontier's website to check out their latest deals.

10 Affordable Road Trip Destinations in the U.S.

Want to take a road trip this summer? Consider these 10 destinations.

cheap tropical travel destinations

CHUYN/Getty Images

This summer, skip the plane or train ride and hop in the car to embark on an epic road trip. Fortunately, the U.S. is home to dozens — if not hundreds — of incredible road trip destinations, some more budget-friendly than others. That’s why we tapped the pros at Turo , the world’s largest car-sharing marketplace, to determine the most affordable road trip destinations across the country.

“Turo has an incredible selection of vehicles for every budget, and there’s still time to rent an amazing vehicle this summer with plenty of vehicles under $50 (not including taxes or fees) all over the U.S., especially in Florida, Texas, and California,” says Albert Mangahas, Turo’s chief data officer. Along with some of the most beautiful beaches, these states are home to some of the nation’s most iconic national parks for travelers who prefer land over sea.

From the beaches of San Diego to the streets of Orlando, keep reading for the top cheap road trip destinations in the U.S. with rental car options under $50 per day based on data pulled by Turo.

Jacksonville, Florida

Michael Warren/Getty Images

This northern Florida city – which also happens to be the largest city in the continental U.S. — offers 22 miles of beautiful beaches, outdoor adventure, and America’s largest urban park system, making it a must-visit. After picking up your rental car, make a beeline straight for Jacksonville Beach, or tie up your laces and explore part of the 14.5-mile Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail, which features stunning forest scenery best explored on foot or bike. Art enthusiasts need not miss the expansive Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens , with a collection that spans 5,000 pieces and counting across several centuries. Families, meanwhile, will especially love the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens , which is home to over 2,000 majestic animals, including elephants, flamingos, and tigers. Pro tip: Plan your trip over a weekend to experience the Riverside Arts Market (open every Saturday, rain or shine) that sells handmade jewelry, art, produce, and more from over 100 local vendors.

Palm Beach, Florida

bpperry/Getty Images

Ready for the next stop on your Florida road trip? About 70 miles north of Miami lies posh Palm Beach. Known as “ The Hamptons of the South ,” this ritzy seaside enclave is home to an abundance of swanky bars, restaurants, and designer shops. Fortunately, summer marks the destination’s off-season, which means you can enjoy many of the tony town’s top hotels — including the Brazilian Court Hotel , Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa , or The Colony Hotel — for a fraction of the cost compared to winter rates. The region itself is home to 47 miles of beaches, which are, by far, the top attraction here. However, travelers need not sleep on the scenic 5.5-mile Lake Trail or Worth Avenue, which is lined with chic boutiques. After breaking a sweat or shopping, hit up local hot spots like Green’s Pharmacy & Luncheonette and Sprinkles Ice Cream . Finally, for some reprieve, check out the idyllic Mounts Botanical Garden in nearby West Palm Beach , an easy drive from Palm Beach proper.

Houston, Texas

Vincent Mercer/Travel + Leisure

Houston makes for an ideal long weekend getaway, and renting a car makes it easy to explore the destination’s many distinct neighborhoods, especially when you consider the fact that Houston itself is so large (640.04 square miles, to be exact!). Stops at The Galleria and the Space Center are a requisite, but having a car allows you to explore some off-the-beaten-path spots, such as The Beer Can House (which, yes, is exactly what it sounds like) and the National Museum of Funeral History . Travelers may also retreat to nature at Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park or the Buffalo Bayou Park ; alternatively, drive a half-hour to Lake Houston Wilderness Park in nearby New Caney.

San Antonio, Texas

Between its history (don’t miss The Alamo), 15-mile River Walk, and abundance of eclectic drinking and dining options (it’s one of very few U.S. cities to be named a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy ), San Antonio is well worthy of a spot on your summer travel list , Upon arrival, hop in your car and head straight to the trendy-but-historic Pearl District, where you can admire public art along the 1.3-mile Museum Reach , which also happens to be a haven for foodies with an abundance of top-notch eateries like Best Quality Daughter , which dishes out delectable Asian-American fare. While there is so much to see and do within the city limits — including the aforementioned Alamo and the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park — you can also hop in the car to visit Fredericksburg (approx. 90 minutes away by car), which is teeming with wineries and scenic hiking, including the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area .

Orlando, Florida

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

While there’s lots to love about Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando , this central Florida city and its surroundings offer so much more than the incredible theme parks that call Orlando home. Nature lovers can get out on the water via a guided kayak tour through Wekiwa Springs State Park, known for its emerald springs and incredible swimming and hiking, or paddle through the canals in the nearby city of Winter Park . Culinary connoisseurs will also be pleased to find that Orlando was recently voted America’s best food city , and it’s home to Michelin-ranked spots across a variety of price points and cuisines, including Otto’s High Dive for fantastic Cuban food and cocktails, The Strand for seasonal New American fare, and Camille for tasty Vietnamese. There are plenty of free things to do in Orlando too, be it a scenic stroll through Lake Eola Park, classic car shows in nostalgia-inducing Old Town, or self-guided mural tours through the Mills 50 District.

Tampa, Florida

Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

Want to add to your Florida itinerary? Dubbed Florida’s new “It” city, Tampa has become increasingly trendy in recent years thanks to the 2022 opening of The Tampa EDITION and a slew of haute restaurants like Ash , Casa Cami , and Predalina . You may be tempted to spend your entire trip posted up in the hip and highly walkable Water Street Tampa district — which is almost always buzzing thanks to its abundance of green space, restaurants, and hotels — but don’t be afraid to neighborhood-hop, which is incredibly easy to do with a car. While it spans just six blocks, Hyde Park Village is an upscale neighborhood renowned for its shopping and dining, and Seminole Heights boasts tree-lined streets and quaint homes. Ybor City, meanwhile, teems with historic charm, vintage shops, and Cuban and Latin American restaurants. For the best city views, venture off to Davis Islands , which also offer Instagram-worthy, pastel-hued buildings that look like they’ve been plucked straight from the Mediterranean.

Sacramento, California

casch/Getty Images

California’s capital city is often overlooked in favor of more popular spots like San Francisco or Los Angeles, but don’t let that deter you from visiting. The destination is chock-full of distinct charm and character. Located along the water, Old Sacramento — which has been deemed a National Historic Landmark District and State Historic Park — pays homage to the 1849 Gold Rush era with dozens of recreated and restored buildings, wooden sidewalks, and horse-drawn carriages. History buffs will also appreciate a visit to the state capital . Additionally, it’s worth noting that the city offers 230-plus days of sunshine each year, making it a haven for outdoor lovers with activities like biking, hiking, and al fresco concerts. The city is also home to over 650 murals, making it a fun stop for art enthusiasts. Looking to escape Sacramento for a day or so? Consider a trip to Lake Tahoe or San Francisco, which are 90 minutes and two hours away, respectively.

Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas

The Dallas-Fort Worth region spans over 9,000 square miles, so renting a car here is a no-brainer. In Dallas proper, visitors can enjoy a much-needed break from the scorching heat by cooling off inside one of the city’s many museums, including the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealy Plaza , the Perot Museum of Nature and Science , and the Dallas Museum of Art . The 68-square-mile Dallas Arts District serves as the city’s arts and culture hub,  while the Uptown neighborhood boasts a buzzy drinking and dining scene. The Bishops Arts District, which is known for its top-notch shopping, entertainment, and street art, is also a must-visit. Meanwhile, in Fort Worth — approximately 45 minutes from Dallas by car — a visit to the Stockyards feels like a step back in time to the Wild West with cattle drives and rodeos. The city is also home to the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame.

San Diego, California

Chelsea Loren/Travel + Leisure

This sunny SoCal city is renowned for its warm weather, stunning stretches of sand, and lush parks, making it a great choice for a long weekend getaway. It goes without saying, but a trip to the beach here is one for the books. Options run the gamut from Cardiff State Beach , to the lively Moonlight State Beach in nearby Encinitas, which is a popular spot for swimming, surfing, and volleyball, to bustling Coronado Beach . Be sure to also carve out enough time to explore the city’s other equally impressive sights, including Belmont Park, an oceanfront amusement park that practically oozes nostalgia; the expansive Balboa Park, which is home to the San Diego Zoo; and the historic Gaslamp Quarter that’s teeming with nightlife. La Jolla, a quick 20-minute drive from downtown, is famous for its rugged coastline, abundance of seals and sea lions, scenic trails (don’t miss Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve ), incredible golf, and charming downtown area.

Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area

Victoria Chamberlain/Travel + Leisure

It’s no secret that our nation’s capital is beloved among history buffs for its many monuments, landmarks, and (free) museums, but there’s so much more to see, do, and explore both in the city and nearby. Georgetown and The Wharf are two of D.C.’s trendiest neighborhoods, and both are teeming with eclectic shopping, drinking, and dining venues. Additionally, travelers can — and should — venture outside the city limits to explore nearby destinations such as Old Town Alexandria (approximately eight miles away), which offers quaint cobblestone streets and 18th-century townhouses. A bit further away is Loudoun County , which is famous for its wineries, vineyards, and storybook-worthy towns like Middleburg and Leesburg.
