1. old faithful snowmobile tours .

The Old Faithful Snowmobile Tours offer various packages, such as a 1-day or a multi-day tour. Whatever you choose, it would be an unforgettable experience you would treasure forever. Old faithful is one of the most famous tourist spots in Yellowstone, and your tour wouldn’t be complete if you don’t visit this astounding place.

snowmobile tours yellowstone

The staff would pick you up at your local lodging. You have to be ready before 6:30 am. They will take you to the company’s office at Jackson to prepare for the tour. A continental breakfast and lunch are included in the package; hence, you don’t have to eat breakfast at your accommodations.

Also, they will orient you and prepare the necessary outfit for the snowmobile tour. You would then be transported to the South Entrance to start your Yellowstone tour.

You will be riding your snowmobile around 90 to 100 miles to and from the Old Faithful Geyser to Black Sand Basin. It would be a 6-hour snowmobile ride. You must be 16 or older with a valid driver’s license to be able to ride the snowmobile. A child-passenger must be a least 6 years old.

Yellowstone is famous for its wildlife and natural beauty; so be ready to snap pictures of elks, bison, or eagles. Naturally, remember to take a video or picture of the center of attraction – the eruption of the geyser. There are rivers and waterfalls that you could appreciate too.

After lunch, you can explore more of the wildlife in the north. Later on, you would head to the Moose Falls and revel in its unadulterated splendor. That would end your 1-day tour.

For the multi-day or 3-day tour, here are the itineraries:

Day 1 of the multi-day tour is the same as the 1-day tour, only, you will not proceed to the Moose Falls but instead, you would exit at the west entrance and stay overnight at a designated accommodation in West Yellowstone.

After breakfast, you would head to the Grizzly Discovery Center to watch the bears play in their natural habitat. Wolves are added to the pack, so you can take your time snapping pictures and watching them. You would then proceed to Gibbon River and Norris Basin’s steaming geysers.  You would be spending the night in Gardiner, Montana.

You would start Day 3 by touring the frozen waterfalls at the Grand Canyon. Make sure you shoot the exquisite scene of this place. Next, you will be exploring the Hayden Valley to sight-see and admire its hidden treasures. You would then pass through the shores of Yellowstone Lake on your way to the south entrance of the park. Finally, you would go back to Jackson via the Grand Teton National Park using a van.

2. Scenic Safaris’ Yellowstone Snowmobile Tour – Old Faithful

The Scenic Safaris’ Yellowstone Snowmobile Tour is another snowmobile Yellowstone tour of Old Faithful. It starts at 6 am and is a 12-hour tour of one of the most famous spots in Yellowstone. You would be outfitted in Flagg Ranch after breakfast. However, you should bring the basic gear that you need, such as winter attire, gloves, driver’s license, balaclava, and thermals. Don’t forget your camera.

Aside from admiring and capturing the eruption of the geyser and other splendid views, you would be learning about the history of the park’s various geological features. It would be fun riding your snowmobile, but you must have a driver’s license. Also, if you have a child passenger, he/she must be at least 8 to 10 years old, and his/her seat in the snowmobile must be federally approved.

The perfectly groomed snowmobile trail is 45 miles that would stop at the Moose, Lewis Falls, the Lewis Canyon, and the West Thumb Geyser Basin. The Old Faithful is next to where you can witness when the geyser erupts. Lunch would follow before you go back to exploring more of the park. You would be back to your lodging at around 7 pm.

3. Yellowstone Vacations Snowmobile Tours

The Yellowstone Vacations Snowmobile Tours starts at 8 am and returns you to your lodgings at 5 pm. The snowmobile tour includes a guided tour of the wonderful winter scene of Yellowstone National Park and the Old Faithful.

Local and foreign tourists usually visit Yellowstone in spring or summer but rarely during winter. But, if you’re an avid snowmobiler, a ride in Yellowstone should be included in your bucket list. Winter in Yellowstone is totally different from other seasons.

Exploring Yellowstone on your snowmobile would be an entirely different experience with all of the hotspots frozen and the park not as populated as during the dry season. You may want to snap pictures while the park is less crowded.

Meals are not included, so you have to pre-order them. In addition, you have to bring the basic winter gear for your snowmobile ride.

4. Two-Top Yellowstone Winter Tours

The Two-Top guided Yellowstone snowmobile tour offers a tour of the Yellowstone Park, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, or the Old Faithful Geyser Basin. Departure is 8 am or 9 am and by 5 pm you should have returned. There should not be more than 9 snowmobiles in one tour.

Experienced guides will assist you in learning about the park and its history. They would also direct you to the ideal places to view the animals in their most uninhibited moments.

Private tours can be granted with a flexible time of departure, as long as you would be back before 5 pm. In addition, you can rent your snowmobile from reputable companies.

5. BrushBuck Tours

BrushBuck Snowmobile Photo Tours departs from 6 to 6:30 am and returns from 5 to 7 PM. The maximum number of snowmobiles per day in the tour must not be more than 12.

You have two options: a tour of the magnificent Old Faithful geyser or a tour of the gelid waterfalls at the Grand Canyon. Both of these tours would provide enough time for you to admire and take pictures of the hotspots in Yellowstone. The tour would lead you also to the variety of wildlife in the area and to the lovely spots in Yellowstone. Children on the tour must be at least 8 years old.

6. Jackson Tours: Yellowstone Old Faithful Snowmobile Tour

Next on our list of best snowmobile tours Yellowstone is the Jackson Hole Old Faithful Tours . Also by Scenic Safaris, the pickup time from your Jackson lodgings is typically 6 am, but some adjustments may be made. The destination is the Old Faithful in Yellowstone. You would travel around 90 miles back and forth from Jackson to your destination, and snowmobilers must not exceed 14. Drivers must have a valid driver’s license.

snowmobile tours yellowstone

Your itinerary would include the most popular place – Old Faithful, the worth-exploring West Thumb Geyser Basin, the intriguing Moose Falls, Scenic Safaris, and the legendary Fountain Paint Pot. This is similar to another tour offered by the same company, only the loop is slightly different. Capable guides would direct you to worth-touring places in Yellowstone.

7. Backcountry Adventures

Backcountry Adventures is one of the best Yellowstone snowmobile tours in the area. The departure time is 8 am, but you have to be at their West Yellowstone office before that time.

The snowmobile tour stops are Madison Junction, Biscuit Basin, Fountain Paint Pot, and Midway Geyser Basin. You could also choose between a trip to the Grand Canyon or to Old Faithful. One of the most popular tours is that of the Old Faithful. This is most probably because the phenomenon can be rarely witnessed in other parts of the world.

The abundance of wildlife during your trip would make your tour worthwhile. Watch the daring eagles fly above, and be alert for the appearance of elks, moose, and deer. You may want to be quick on your feet to capture pictures of these animals. The appearance of the Old Faithful and Grand Canyon in winter may vary from that of warmer seasons, but the grandeur would still be there. Snap your photos and freeze those moments forever in your camera.

Well-trained guides will assist you in touring various geothermal spots in Yellowstone. And you will be riding the 4-strokes, late snowmobile model. This means you would be enjoying a quieter and smoother ride while riding through the groomed trails. Backcountry tours offer one of the best West Yellowstone snowmobile tours in the area.

8. Gary Fales Outfitting

Next on our list of best snowmobile Yellowstone tours is the Gary Fales Outfitting tour. The Gary Fales Outfitting Tour enters through the East Gate, which is the only snowmobile tour allowed to enter that particular gate. It offers one day or more options that you can choose from. The tour would take you to Old Faithful, Yellowstone Falls, Geyser Basins, and the Yellowstone Lake.

The tour covers 150 miles of the park. Most tours will visit the Old Faithful only and add a few more destinations before heading home. However, Gary Fales Outfitting wants to give you a ‘full show’ of the wonders of Yellowstone during winter and would tour you to the unique scenic spots, such as the Yellowstone Lake, The Grand Loop Road, the riveting Fountain Paint Pot, of course, the dazzling display of geyser eruptions by the Old Faithful, and even the crystalline sight of the Lower Falls of the Grand Canyon.

Watch the display of wildlife, such as birds and animals while they go about their business during winter. Also, relish the wonderful scenic spots in the area and remember to take pictures for your collection.

This would maximize your snowmobile tour and make your trip more valuable and definitely more than your money’s worth. You can travel alone too if you wish, but you must know the place like the back of your hand, or you’ll waste precious time searching for the hotspots.

9. Teton Valley Adventures

The Teton Valley Adventures guided snowmobile tour Yellowstone is concentrated on Yellowstone National Park, the Old Faithful, the Mesa Falls, and the Teton National Forest. Private tours are also allowed based on your preferences. Only children at least 12 years old can join the tour.

Included in the tours are the snowmobile and fuel; appropriate clothing for winter; transportation and knowledgeable and highly skilled guides. It would be a 60-mile round trip for you.

If you want to see more aside from the Old Faithful, you may want to book a Yellowstone Loop Tour. This 20-hour tour will take you to the rest of the Yellowstone attractions, such as the Fountain Pain Pots, the Grand Canyon, the Yellowstone Lake, and many more areas. You could also choose only the Grand Canyon tour if you prefer to stay for a shorter time. There are other options you can select from according to your available time and personal finances.

10. Travelers Snowmobile Rentals and Tours Yellowstone

The Travelers Snowmobile Tour is one of the best west Yellowstone snowmobile tours. It is part of West Yellowstone and offers more than 400 miles of well-groomed snowmobile trails . You can book a snowmobile tour to the Grand Canyon and Old Faithful of Yellowstone Park during winter. The winter sights and sounds of the wild and of nature would be an experience you could document in your diary.

They also provide snowmobile rentals and other tours to different places in the area; the friendly staff members are willing to customize your tour to fulfill your heart’s desire. A trail guide is provided too, should you want one. But you could also go on a self-guided snowmobile tour as per their rules and regulations.

Whatever type of tour you choose, make sure your snowmobile provider has permission to enter the park, or you will just be wasting, your time, money, and energy.

Conclusion – Yellowstone Snowmobile Tours

TOP-RATED YELLOWSTONE TOURS FROM CODY, WY ★★★★★

We needed a couple of BAT snowmobiles for a three day unguided tour of Yellowstone park. Gary Fales Outfitting provided the equipment and clothing required for the trip. The staff was excellent to work with, very accommodating, and the equipment was top notch. The trip was awesome, would recommend Gary Fales Outfitting to anyone considering the same type of trip.

If you’re looking for a fun, safe, and exciting winter trip through Yellowstone, go with Gary Fales. Trips from Cody offer the most dramatic and stunning scenery and the most bang for your buck on day trips or custom shorter routes. Well worth it!

I’ve made a number of trips into Yellowstone with Gary Fales Outfitting, and each time was a special event that I feel lucky to have experienced. The guides are knowledgeable and friendly, and the trip through the East Gate is the best way to experience the wildest way into Yellowstone.

I live in Bozeman, Mont., and spend a lot of time around Yellowstone Park enjoying the great outdoors. There are lots of amazing experiences to be had around here, but not much can compare to a snowmobile trip through the park with Gary Fales Outfitting.

LOOKING FOR ANOTHER WAY SEE YELLOWSTONE?

Snowcoach Tours are one of the most popular ways to tour Yellowstone in winter. If that sounds like an appealing way to see Yellowstone National Park in winter, please also consider one of our Snowcoach Tours!

All snowmobile rentals require pre-payment by a Visa®, MasterCard®, Discover®, or American Express® credit card, which will be billed for the full cost of each rental, including tax. Unapproved credit card charges will result in reservation cancellation.

There is a $25 Damage Agreement per day per snowmobile with a $750 deductible. Theft insurance is the responsibility of the renter.

Cancellations must be received no later than 14 days before your scheduled rental to receive a refund. Cancellations or changes received less than 14 days before your arrival, including no-shows, will result in forfeiture of your refund. This cancellation policy is strictly enforced with no exceptions.

All snowmobile tours leave from West Yellowstone, and will meet on-site at the shop you booked through:

  • Bookings made through Yellowstone Vacation Tours meet at 415 Yellowstone Avenue, right next door to the Holiday Inn® West Yellowstone.
  • Bookings made through Two Top Snowmobile meet at 645 Gibbon Avenue, on the corner of Gibbon and Iris.

You will definitely need some durable snowmobile clothing to protect your body from the elements. We have the following equipment available to rent for all riders:

  • Snowmobile boots
  • Snowmobile suit

A DOT-approved helmet is included with your rental.

Winter clothing can be reserved when you call to book your tour, and you will then be sized on-site when you arrive. With the winter gear mentioned, most riders will be comfortable enough wearing jeans, a long sleeve shirt and thermal underwear. If you’d like to dress warmer you are certainly welcome to, but we suggest dressing in layers so you can better regulate your own personal temperature.

All of our snowmobiles are automatics, so you don’t need to worry about shifting gears or doing anything crazy. Before your tour departs, your guide will give you a full orientation on how each of the simple controls work, as well as what to expect while riding in town and inside the park.

Just follow your guide’s lead. When you ride through Yellowstone National Park, all snowmobile riders must stay single file. That way, your guide is leading the “train,” always in front. If the guide slows down or stops, just do what they do and listen for their instruction.

There are three items that we recommend all snowmobile riders purchase or bring with you prior to meeting up for your tour; some warm ski gloves, a balaclava, and a boxed lunch.

Guests are encouraged to bring their own ski gloves. We do have a few loaner pairs available, but sizes and availability are not guaranteed.

Balaclavas are those ninja mask-style head gear that you may have seen before, and will provide some much-appreciated warmth to the one area of your body that will otherwise be left partially exposed — your face! We sell balaclavas on-site at Yellowstone Vacation Tours if you don’t have your own.

Additionally, food service inside the park is extremely limited during the winter months, and since this is a full day tour, you would do well to purchase a boxed lunch before you head out. Boxed lunches can be reserved directly through Yellowstone Vacation Tours when you call in to book your tour, but must be ordered at least 24 hours in advance so they can be ready for pick-up on the morning of your tour.

A backpack might be a good idea, especially if you are purchasing the recommended boxed lunches. A limited number of backpacks are available on-site, or you are welcome to bring your own. Wool socks are also a good investment for outdoor winter activities. You will also need a Park Pass for your Snowmobile Tour (one pass per snowmobile).

Jackson Hole & Grand Teton N.P. Visitor Guide

Snowmobiling through yellowstone national park.

O ne of the truly special winter experiences visitors to the Jackson Hole area can give themselves is touring Yellowstone National Park on a snowmobile. With Scenic Safaris’ snowmobile tours you’ll get to see the park as very few do — with no crowds and no cars.

On a Scenic Safaris’ snowmobile, you are as wild and free as the bison you’ll see along the way up to Old Faithful.

Scenic Safaris has been offering snowmobile tours through Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park and the Bridger-Teton National Forest for the 10 years. It has a fleet of Ski Doo 4-stroke machines, all of which allow for reduced emissions and noise.

View Wildlife

From the moment your Scenic Safaris guide picks you up in a luxury van at your hotel between 6 and 7 a.m., to the moment he drops you back at your door around 6 p.m., the chances of seeing some of the amazing wildlife that call this part of the world home increases.

The tour is an all day, 12-hour round-trip adventure and the early morning and early evening hours present some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities while you make your way to and from our country’s first national park. While bison, bald eagles and the occasional river otter will be the primary wildlife you’ll encounter inside the park itself, an appearance by elk or moose outside the park boundaries is certainly not at all out of the question.

After leaving your lodging you’ll drive up to Flagg Ranch in Yellowstone where you will begin your journey on your snowmobile. No more than nine snowmobiles per group, plus one guide—will head out to start your day of scenic adventure. Gear is included— snowmobile one-piece suit, boots, and a helmet, additionally breakfast & lunch.

As you wind your way up to Old Faithful on your snowmobile, you’ll find there is nothing quite like passing bison burrowing their mighty heads into the deep snow searching for food and then watching their snow-covered faces emerge victorious.

Yellowstone's Winter's Majesty

Yellowstone limits how many snowmobiles can be in the park each day—no more than 500—so unlike summer, you’ll often have moments while zipping along the snow-covered roads when it feels like you’re the only one out there in the pristine wilderness.

Once you leave Flagg Ranch, you’ll be on the groomed trail to Old Faithful for a total of 45 miles, making several stops along the way before arriving at Yellowstone’s most popular sightseeing spot around the geyser’s lunchtime eruption.

“As a novice on a snowmobile I was perfectly comfortable and would highly recommend this tour group.” – Trip Advisor commenter

Some of the points of interest along the way may include Moose Falls, Lewis Canyon, Lewis Falls and West Thumb Geyser Basin. All of these and more provide enough photo opps of the breathtaking winter scenery and landscapes in the park to last a lifetime.

The very experienced and affable Scenic Safaris interpretive guides have multiple certifications, including being wilderness first responders. Their knowledge of the incredible geological environment of Yellowstone will prove invaluable to your overall excursion.

Quick Facts

  • WHEN: From December 15- March 15
  • WHERE: Your Scenic Safaris guide will pick you up between 6-7 a.m. at your lodging. From Jackson, the South entrance of Yellowstone is about a 1 and 1/2 hour drive, so you’ll be on your snowmobile between 8 and 9 a.m.
  • WHAT TO BRING: Winter clothing and thermals, gloves, balaclava, camera, driver’s license
  • COST: $525 per driver/$855 driver with passenger, depending upon trip date and passenger age (minimum age for children is 8). Private tours are available.
  • DURATION: About 12 hours, round-trip
  • CONTACT: 307-734-8898 or 888-734-8898; scenic-safaris.com
  • MORE TOUR OPTIONS:  Scenic Safaris also offers half-day snowmobile and full-day tours in Bridger-Teton National Forest.

Geysers and Hot Springs

Yellowstone National Park contains the largest concentration of geysers in the world, the drama and majesty of which is made even more startling against the backdrop of winter.

Shades of aquamarine and goldenrod emerge from the thermal pools, especially in West Thumb and by Old Faithful. When steam erupts from acres of glittering snow you’ll see bison cozy up to the pools to bask in the warmth, their shaggy coats riddled with ice.

Then grab a seat for the impressive sight of up to 8,400 gallons of scalding water reaching heights topping 184 feet.

The total amount of time on the snowmobile from Flagg Ranch to Old Faithful and back is approximately 5 to 6 hours, depending upon how many stops are made to view all that winter in Yellowstone holds.

This is a bucket list tour, and no snowmobiling experience is necessary and the minimum age for kids to ride is 8 years old.

Of course, it almost goes without saying that the whole experience is —really—priceless.

BONUS TIP: Bring a small backpack to hold extra snacks and water, hand warmers, an extra clothing layer and camera (do not forget your camera!). These packs work well as they can be secured onto the snowmobile.

Old faithful via snowmobile.

Prepare to get up close and personal with Yellowstone National Park from the seat of a snowmobile. Even if you’re new to snow machines, our experienced guides will have you feeling like a seasoned pro from the moment you depart West Yellowstone on your all-day adventure. You’ll see:

  • Old Faithful , the star of Yellowstone and the best-known geyser in the world. You can almost set your watch by the eruptions that occur about every 90 minutes—you won’t want to miss it.
  • Lower Geyser Basin , home to geysers, hot springs and mud pools—including the often-photographed Fountain Paint Pots.
  • Firehole Canyon, cut through 800-foot lava flows. In the summer, park visitors are drawn to the waterfall and swimming hole, but in winter it’s a quiet, beautiful place to explore.

On your journey, you’ll stop at Madison Junction . It’s an ideal spot to get off your snowmobile, hang out in a warming hut, and enjoy a break along your journey.

“Grand Canyon” of Yellowstone by Snowmobile

Although Yellowstone National Park is known for Old Faithful, there are many beautiful natural sights to see year-round, including “the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.” They become even more memorable when you view them via snowmobile. Never driven a snowmobile?  No problem. We will teach you everything you need to know. During your full-day tour, you’ll see:

  • Norris Geyser Basin , which features Steamboat Geyser. While it doesn’t run “on time” as much as Old Faithful, Steamboat is the tallest geyser anywhere on the globe. It’s spectacular any time of year.
  • The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is a must-see phenomenon in winter. You’ll be captivated by the snow clinging to the canyon walls and the ice bridge that forms at the bottom. It’s definitely a “bucket list” location.
  • If time allows, Hayden Valley will also be a stop on your route. It is here that you will often find photo-worthy bison herds, elk and other animals.

All of our winter tours include a stop at Madison Junction . You can stretch your legs, take a bathroom break and talk with other Park visitors in a warming hut.
