Given that Hot Springs National Park shares a name with the nearby town, it should come as no surprise that the 5,500-acre park serves as the main attraction in Hot Springs. The park's thermal waters are its primary draw, and visitors can still soak in the historical establishments lining Bathhouse Row, including the Fordyce Bathhouse Visitor Center and the Buckstaff Bathhouse . Additionally, numerous trails weave throughout the park. A majority of the trails are concentrated between the Hot Springs and North Mountain trails as well as the West Mountain Trails. Both these areas offer short, interconnected trails, while the approximately 10-mile Sunset Trail provides a more challenging trek for experienced hikers.

Past visitors suggested taking on the 2.6-mile Sugarloaf Mountain segment of the Sunset Trail, which includes a short spur trail to the Balanced Rock that rewards hikers with one of the most stunning views in Arkansas . They also appreciate the park's attractions in the middle of town, like Bathhouse Row and the Grand Promenade.

Those who trek to Lake Ouachita State Park for a shorter period must choose between enjoying the park's water and land attractions. The water is accessible through the park's two beaches, while a marina is also available for travelers who chose to rent a boat. Additionally, visitors can bathe in the Three Sisters Springs, whose alleged healing benefits rival the storied waters of Hot Springs National Park. Lake Ouachita State Park offers two trails for visitors who prefer to stay on land, ranging from a half-mile to 4 miles.

Previous park visitors appreciated its tranquil waters and clean campsites. They also particularly enjoyed the variety of activities orchestrated by the park rangers, which range from nature "Jeopardy!" to starlight lake tours to snakeskin bookmark making. They also praised the availability of watercraft rentals at the on-site marina.

The Garvan Woodland Gardens boast an impressive assortment of natural and man-made attractions. Surprisingly, flowers are not the garden's main draw. The Anthony Chapel Complex in particular appeals to architecture enthusiasts with its latticework of wood and glass. The Joy Manning Scott Bridge of the Full Moon, one of the most photographed features within the gardens, is equally admired for its nod to the ancient stone bridges of western China. Meanwhile, green thumbs appreciate the attraction's natural areas, including the bonsai garden and woodland walk, which covers just a fraction of the Garvan Woodland Gardens' diverse green spaces.

Reviewers suggested visiting the gardens during the winter for its stunning annual Christmas lights display. Recent travelers said the spring season, when the garden's array of flowers begin to bloom, provides an excellent alternative if you don't visit during the holidays. Regardless of when you visit, be sure to stop by the spectacular Anthony Chapel, which serves as the garden's primary attraction according to visitors.

In between races, travelers suggest heading inside to enjoy the casino's slot machines and table games. Whether you're betting or just enjoying the race, past tourists insist that you try one of the track's signature corned beef sandwiches when lunchtime rolls around.

Beating the Arkansas heat is easy at the Magic Springs Theme and Water Park. The park offers an array of rides designed to appeal to travelers of every age. Past travelers offer mixed reviews of the park: Many visitors appreciated the park's short lines and clean facilities, but some found the rides outside the water park to be a bit lacking. Still, the park's main appeal comes from its waterslides, lazy river and wave pool.

The park's hours vary greatly depending on the day of the week and season, but it generally welcomes guests daily in June and July, as well as on weekends in April, May, August and October. It is closed November through March. Admission at the front gate starts at $59.99, but you can purchase a variety of discounted tickets in advance on the Magic Springs Theme and Water Park's website . The attraction sits on the northeastern edge of Hot Springs, about 3 miles from the downtown area, and is accessible via the No. 3 (green) bus route. Taking the bus proves an excellent alternative to parking, as the daily parking fee is $15.

Reaching a whopping 1,256 feet above sea level, Hot Springs Mountain Tower provides travelers with unmatched views of the surrounding area. Those who ride to the tower's top will be able to make out the Ouachita Mountains, Hot Springs Mountain and the Diamond Lakes. The panoramic view overlooks 140 miles. In addition to views, visitors can grab a keepsake or snag a snack from the Hot Springs Mountain Tower's gift shop and small cafe.

Past visitors enjoyed their Hot Springs Mountain Tower experiences. Travelers even described the winding road leading to the tower as a beautiful drive. Once you arrive, stop in the surprisingly robust gift shop on the base level. From the gift shop, you'll board a glass elevator, which will whisk you 216 feet up to the observation deck. From the deck, you'll be treated to stunning views of Hot Springs National Park .

This small, lesser known stop is one of the original things to do in Hot Springs Arkansas. It is a great stop for model train enthusiasts. This is one of the museums in Hot Springs and showcases a tiny town entirely hand built.

The amount of time, artistry and effort that went into this is admirable. This is a quality display with several moving parts, lights and electricity. The museum has been in place for more than 50 years. The staff are so helpful and are happy to answer any questions you have. They are also happy to walk you through the history of the build and how it came to be.

While the museum is small and doesn’t take much time to see (30 minutes to an hour) it is worth a stop. You will have the chance to see a full quality display. Well worth the stop.

Garvan Woodland Gardens

Things to do is Hot Springs Arkansas would not be complete without a visit to the Garvan Woodland Gardens. This 210 acre botanical park is the result of the incredible joining of the botanical park to the University of Arkansas School of Architecture. The Garvan Woodland Gardens was donated to the school in 1985 and it was a beautiful chemistry.

The huge garden park now boasts an incredible mixture of lush forest trails, a wooded shoreline, a chapel and charming waterfalls. This is one of the great things to do in Hot Springs with kids. Kids can spend an entire afternoon exploring the trails and discovering all the architectural treasures that await them.

Have kids head on a scavenger hunt. Can they find the 12 foot waterfall? What about the Anthony Chapel that blends beautifully into nature that it looks like it grew there? Mid America Science Museum

While you are there don’t miss the Bob Wheeler sky walk. This outdoor exhibit it located out the door in the west wing and welcomes you to a 180 foot bridge. The bridge is 40 feet off the ground and rewards you with spectacular views of the wooded forest around the museum (a massive 21 acres!). The view is amazing.

So if you aren’t sure what to do in Hot Springs – definitely visit the Mid America Science Museum. As an added bonus you can also see the world’s most powerful Tesla coil. And that is really cool!

Lake Catherine State Park

Lake Catherine State Park is a treasure of things to do in Hot Springs. The 2240 acre state park has several things to do in Hot Springs with couples or with kids or even as a solo traveler!

The Lake Catherine State Park is located on the southeastern side of Hot Springs Arkansas. On the edge of the Ouachita River it isn’t surprising that there is excellent fishing available here. There is also plenty of hiking. And even cabins from the 1930s built right on the water’s edge.

You can rent boats throughout the year here and rent cabins. Be aware that if you show up and the parking lot is full that also means that the park has reached capacity. To preserve this amazing park they limit how many people can enter. So arrive early to avoid disappointment!

In addition to the cute 1930s wood cabins there are also several wood and stone buildings that are native to the area. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy historic sites in Hot Springs Arkansas. If you can time your visit for autumn you will be amazed at the autumn colors!

Magic Springs

This is one of the things to do in Hot Springs that you will want to plan an entire day for. Magic Springs is an extensive water park on the northeast corner of Hot Springs.

Magic springs is one of the amazing things to do in Hot Springs with kids. No one will be bored here. Magic Springs is not just a water park. It is also an amusement park complete with roller coasters. If you prefer to lounge around there is plenty of water space to just kick back and relax. Or grab a tube and enjoy floating down the artificial river.

If planning a trip to the theme park you will have lots of options. There are thrill rides, family rides and kids rides available. The Plummit Summit is a great way to cool off on a hot day if you don’t mind getting wet! Be prepared to walk as the rides are spaced further apart and the terrain is hilly. And be sure to enjoy some of the slushies to cool down!

If you’re headed to the water park there are so many options to enjoy your day. There are coin lockers available to store your belongings and even cabanas to rent. This Brewery is not only located in a historic bathhouse but they use the natural mineral waters to brew their own beer! The Superior Bathhouse Brewery is actually the first place in the world to use natural mineral waters!

It’s also the first brewery to be located in a national park! So with all these ‘firsts’ under their belt they work hard to keep up their reputation. The menu is classics with a tasty twist like grilled cheese with a delicious three cheese blend. You’ll want to try one of their beer flights which is a sampler of four tap beers of your choice. And the root beer float for dessert is a must! You’ll love kicking back and refuelling at one of the historic sites in Hot Springs!

Bathhouse Row

We highly recommend adding this to your things to do in Hot Springs list. You can easily add this to your list while you are in the area of the Hot Springs National Park as this is on the outer edge. The Superior Bathhouse Brewery is also on this corridor so you can combine that as well! This is truly one of the best romantic getaways in Arkansas!

The Bathhouse Row is one of the quintessential historic sites in Hot Springs. Of all the places to visit in Hot Springs this would be one of the top “can’t miss” places. There are are some shops along the way that offer great opportunities to get some souvenirs. The bathhouses themselves house different things each. Head to the Lamar Bathhouse for a museum and a shop. The Buckstaff Bathhouse has been in continuous operation as a spa for over 100 years. And the Fordyce Bathhouse has the park visitor center where you can stock up on information for planning your stops because there are still more bathhouses to visit!

Adventure Works Hot Springs

For the adventure seekers among you this is a must-do on your things to do in Hot Springs. The Adventure Works is a tree top adventure park. You could do the canopy zip tour, the aerial adventure course or get a combo ticket to do both.

In the canopy zip tour you head into the tree tops by the tributary creek. You will get to climb on up and then enjoy the ride along 10 different zip lines. The entire course will take between 1 to 1.5 hours.

Alternatively you can head to the aerial adventure course. This is a challenging obstacle course high in the tree tops. There are cargo nets, hanging vines and swinging bridges. You will work your way higher into the tree tops as you progress through the course. Participants should be 12 and older (can head up as young as 9 if you are with an adult) and should be wearing good, sturdy shoes.

Of course, you can do both adventures if you really love pushing your heights. Adventure works also runs special tours throughout the year like the haunted forest zip tour in the month of October. Ouachita National Forest

Ouachita National forest isn’t just a must for your things to do in Hot Springs it is one of the best places to experience fall in Arkansas !

The Ouachita National forest is massive at more than 1.8 million acres. It even stretches into Oklahoma! With that much space we’re sure we don’t need to emphasize the variety of hikes available. You can make it a camping hike and carry your gear with you to really venture into the depth of the forest. Or enjoy a scenic drive through the great expanse of craggy mountains and substantial forest.

A favourite hike among many is the winding stairs hike. This isn’t for the lighthearted. There are several water crossings and, even with low water levels, you can expect to get wet making the crossing. The trails are mostly marked but expect to head out prepared. Sturdy shoes, walking sticks, bug and sun protection and plenty of provisions.

The best way to enjoy Ouachita National Forest is to go prepared for whichever kind of journey you are planning. This is definitely one of the great places to visit in Hot Springs.

Josephine Tussaud Wax Museum 

Visiting the Josephine Tussaud Wax Museum is one of the kooky and fun things to do in Hot Springs. Located at the end of bathhouse row it is one of the really easy to access museums in Hot Springs.

The wax museum statues are super realistic though some of the set ups need a little updating. Bear in mind that all the wax statues are behind glass so this does limit your ability to have a picture with your favourite celebrity. However, you can still enjoy the artistry that has gone into each of these statues.

You will have the opportunity to learn a lot about gambling, historical facts and even get spooked by their horror section. It is not advisable to take young children as some of the displays are on the scary side. Overall, this is a great place to pop into and enjoy admiring the art of wax figures. And you will get to learn some new things in addition to it all!

Hot Springs Mountain Tower

The Hot Springs Mountain Tower is a great lookout to add to your list of things to do in Hot Springs Arkansas. This 216ft tower gives you a great place to look out over the Hot Springs Mountain and the surrounding Hot Springs area.

The tower is located in Hot Springs National Park so you can easily pair this with a visit to the national park at the same time. This would be a fun stop to add if you are traveling wit ha group or looking for things to do in Hot Springs with kids.

No need to worry about the height of the tower as there is an elevator to the top. So you can enjoy views from 1,256 feet above sea level with very little effort. You are sure to have an absolutely amazing scenic view.

Of course, if you are keen on getting in your steps for the day or to save a few travel dollars you can opt to climb the stairs. You’ll find a souvenir shop at the bottom of the tower with plenty of options. And there are several plaques with historical facts to turn this into historic sites in Hot Springs. It will be one of the fun Hot Springs attractions to add to your itinerary.

Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf

Among things to do in Hot Springs is Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf. This mini golf course is pirate themed and has 18 themed holes. There are waterfalls, caves and great landscaping. This is just good, solid fun.

You may have heard of Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf before as they area chain throughout several US states. This location does not disappoint. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and so well maintained that the course has won the City Beautification Award from the city of Hot Springs more than once.

During the summer heat you are best to time your visit for the early morning or later in the evening to avoid the midday sun. You could enjoy this as one of the things to do in Hot Springs with kids or enjoy it just as much with a group of adults. There are two courses at this location – both are really fun. You can opt for one course or plan for two. Both courses will take a couple hours to complete and are sure to be a lot of fun.

Hot Springs Baseball Trail

For the baseball lovers among you this is a must do of things to do in Hot Springs. This area has a rich baseball heritage. There are many famous (and infamous) baseball legends that have trained or loved to spend time in the area.

The famous bathhouse row was hailed as one of the best places for them to rejuvenate at. The Boston Red Sox and other well known baseball teams loved to spend time at the Majestic Hotel. Walter Johnson trained for many seasons here. The well-known Babe Ruth trained here nine times and became well known in the area.

Be sure to stop by the Playing Cards Mural where five baseball legends with ties to Hot Springs have been honored in the mural. There are scenic forests, lakes and mountains surrounding the city.

With interesting museums, architectural marvels and amusement parks, alongside great restaurants and shops; there is always a whole bunch of thing to do in Hot Springs for everyone to enjoy.

15. Ouachita National Forest

Home to stunning landscapes, scenery and nature, Ouachita National Forest sprawls across a huge part of the west of the state. Outdoor lovers can hike, bike and horseback ride in the woodlands and gorgeous mountain ranges. You can also fish and kayak in the rivers and lakes or camp overnight at one of its cozy campsites.

As vast swathes of pristine wilderness are literally on the city’s doorstep, both locals and tourists in Hot Springs love exploring the great outdoors. Some head for the national forest’s rugged and rolling mountains and drive about their winding roads. If you want to splash about and have some fun, look no further than the wild and wet Magic Springs Theme and Water Park. Home to almost forty thrilling rides and roller coasters for all ages and adrenaline levels, it lies on the northern outskirts of town.

Since opening in 1977, the massive amusement park has been a firm favorite with families due to its numerous pools, play zones and rides. As well as the exhilarating Arkansas Twister and daunting Plummet Summit, there are also calmer sections for kids with classic bumper cars, carousels and carnival games. Besides shooting down slides and riding exciting roller coasters, guests can watch shows and concerts at its Timberwood Amphitheater.

13. Gangster Museum of America

While the Natural State is renowned for its scenic splendor, there once was a time when Arkansas , and Hot Springs particularly, were famous for bank robbers, bootleggers and gamblers. At the entertaining yet informative Gangster Museum of America in the city center, guests can learn all about the action-packed era. Notorious criminals used to flock to the spa town to relax, gamble and do business.

From the roaring twenties right up until the end of the forties, legendary mobsters like Al Capone and Lucky Luciano holidayed in Hot Springs. Gambling and bootlegging proliferated alongside its bathhouses. In the museum, you can peruse authentic old guns, cars and gambling tables. Photos and film clips also document various crime factions and criminals’ involvement with the city.

12. Adventureworks Hot Springs

Yet another exciting and adrenaline-filled attraction to hit up is Adventureworks Hot Springs, just a short drive to the southeast of the center. Amidst its lush woodlands, you can zipline at great speeds through the dense canopy. There is also some excellent hiking, camping and obstacle courses on offer.

Since 1987, its aerial adventures have evolved considerably with swaying bridges, platforms and of course ziplines all strung up amidst the forest’s ancient trees. The staggering views and scenery on show from its twelve ziplines, Sky Bridge and Observation Deck are certain to appeal to anyone who has a head for heights.

11. Grand Promenade

Peaceful and picturesque to wander along, Grand Promenade winds its way behind Bathhouse Row. Magnificent mountains rise behind both it and the historic buildings down below. As it passes sizzling hot springs and some fine viewpoints, the paved pathway is a treat to explore with benches, flowerbeds and informative plaques lining its route.

Work on the promenade began in the 1930s. Stretching a half-mile in length, the hillside trail takes you from one end of the iconic row to the other. Well-maintained and accessible to all, its design was inspired by the Prado pedestrian walkway in Havana, Cuba. As you stroll along you can snap photos of all the amazing architecture of Central Avenue, and the fantastic nature, mountains and hot springs all around.

10. Mid-America Science Museum

Home to more than a hundred hands-on exhibits, the Mid-America Science Museum is a fascinating place to visit with lots to see and do. Located ten minutes drive west of downtown, it looks at everything from dinosaurs and geology to lights, motion and the senses. A humongous indoor cave and large outdoor nature areas are also part of the sprawling site.

Now the largest science museum in the state, it was first opened to the public in 1979. Award-winning installations, such as its striking Skywalk structure and Point of View gallery, can be explored alongside its fun and experimental workshop. Life-size mastodon skeletons and fabulous flying machines are on show next to climbing frames and virtual reality simulators.

9. Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort

If you’re after another interactive experience then you may want to play some games or watch a thrilling race at the Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort. Lying just south of the center along Central Avenue, it has fun table games and slot machines. Its thoroughbred racetrack is one of the best in the States.

While horse racing has been held at Oaklawn since 1904, its state-of-the-art casino was only opened a couple of years ago. Blackjack, craps and live music are all on offer. In addition to watching races and betting on sporting spectacles, there is also a luxury hotel, spa and numerous trendy bars and restaurants to enjoy.

8. Hot Springs Mountain Tower

Boasting unrivaled panoramas of the city and its surroundings, the massive Hot Springs Mountain Tower rises dramatically to the north of town. From its lofty observation decks, visitors can bask in breathtaking views of the incredible Ouachita Mountains and their vast forests. The Diamond Lakes area can also be spied twinkling in the distance.

The third such structure to be set in the same spot, the lattice steel observatory was erected in 1983 and towers a huge 216 feet in total. Ride its elevator to the very top, enjoy the view and take some photos of Hot Springs far below. Make sure to stop by its lovely little museum and factor in some time for exploring the terrific trails and nature spots at its foot.

7. Lake Catherine State Park

Sure to delight nature lovers and outdoor aficionados alike, the beautiful Lake Catherine State Park lies just twenty minutes drive southeast of the center. As well as relaxing along the scenic shores of its large lake, the park has plenty of pretty pools, waterfalls and nature trails to discover in its verdant woods.

Scattered about are numerous campsites and cabins with some wood and stone structures built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. You can rent a boat at its marina, sunbathe or swim at the lake’s pristine beaches. You can also hike or horseback ride along its leafy trails and visit some of its wonderful waterfalls.

Protected as a state park, the enormous Lake Ouachita was formed in 1952 by the damming of the meandering river of the same name. While countless trails and campgrounds line its shores, the lake’s reflective waters offer all kinds of awesome outdoor activities. Swimming, kayaking and sailing are particularly popular.

As the reservoir’s almost endless waters dominate the area directly west of Hot Springs, locals and tourists alike come here to relax, unwind and enjoy recreational activities. In addition to hiking and cycling, you can picnic and camp while taking in its fabulous views. Fishing and even scuba diving are on offer. On top of all this, the park also has guided hikes, kayak tours and sightseeing cruises for visitors to enjoy.

Home to atmospheric old buildings, attractive architecture and enticing hot springs, Bathhouse Row has been synonymous with the city for well over a century. Situated alongside Central Avenue are a string of eight historic bathhouses with majestic mountains rising steeply all around them.

Aside from simply enjoying the eclectic array of architectural styles, you can also head inside the Buckstaff to soak in the soothing springs until your heart’s content. The only other bathhouse open to the public is the Fordyce, which now acts as a visitor center. It really is a must-visit for its opulent interior and interactive exhibits on the history and heritage of Bathhouse Row.

4. Anthony Chapel

Perched on a hillside overlooking Lake Hamilton is one of Hot Springs’ most unique attractions: the exquisite Anthony Chapel. Made out of a mix of native wood, metal and glass, the serene sanctuary lies amidst the gorgeous Garvan Woodland Gardens. Its floor-to-ceiling windows and soaring columns really make you feel like you’re outside amongst the pines.

Erected in 2006, it stands 57-feet tall. An intricate system of cross-beams and colossal wooden columns hold up its vaulted glass ceiling, and the massive windows reveal the sky and trees above. Thanks to its delightful design and the natural beauty all around it, the charming chapel really is unforgettable.

3. Fordyce Bathhouse Visitor Center

The aforementioned Fordyce Bathhouse Visitor Center is the only other bathhouse you can enter besides the Buckstaff, which has impressively been in continuous operation since 1912. At the center’s museum, you can learn about Bathhouse Row’s interesting past and its famous former clients. Go for a tour around its extraordinary interior and see original tiles, tubs and tools.

Considered to be the most elegant on the row when it was completed in 1915, the Fordyce was then renovated in 1989 to receive another kind of guest entirely. Nowadays, visitors can peruse exhibits and watch an orientation film on the area before exploring the massage rooms, gymnasium and pools. All of these perfectly highlight the bath houses’ former splendor; statues and stained glass windows lie next to murals, marble-clad pools and mosaics.

While the ethereal Anthony Chapel is undoubtedly its standout sight, the Garvan Woodland Gardens has plenty of other scenic parts for you to explore. Due to its proximity to the city center, locals and tourists come here to immerse themselves in nature. The peninsula’s woods and waterfalls lie surrounded by the shimmering waters of Lake Hamilton.

Owned and operated by the University of Arkansas, its idyllic gardens contain all kinds of colorful plants, flowers, trees and shrubs. Streams and trails meander their way here and there. Naturally heated thermal springs can be found all over the city—and while most of them have been covered due to development, there are still a few active springs that travelers can visit. Even in 50-degree weather, you can feel (and see) the heat they give off.

These springs are a natural wonder , but they also produce very good drinking water, dispensed from spigots found on the city's streets. The spring water that comes out of these spigots is warm (on a cold day, it's just lukewarm), and people line up to get a taste. The water is so popular that it isn't uncommon to see people haul gallon containers to fill up and take home with them.

If you're interested in the history of the hot springs and their uses, head over to Bathhouse Row, where historic bathhouse buildings line the main avenue. Today, most of the old buildings serve other functions, such as visitor's centers and information buildings, and are no longer used for baths.

In fact, there are only two buildings that are still operating as bathhouses— Buckstaff , which is open year-round and offers thermal baths and massages for a relatively low price, and Quapaw , which offers thermal baths, massages, and even has a beauty bar for hair care and makeup.

After your thermal bath, you can walk around downtown and check out the many little shops and boutiques. You can shop for antiques, toys, and apparel in unique and historic buildings.

Hot Springs, Arkansas, has been around for a while, and because it has always been a tourist destination, there are lots of quirky roadside-type attractions to discover on the main strip.

One popular attraction is  The Gangster Museum of America. It's small but has some original artifacts from some infamous mobsters and is owned and operated by friendly and informative people. The tour might be a little boring for kids because it's very structured and scripted. However, it provides insight into a different part of Hot Springs' famous past, including gambling and other illicit activities.

If you're a fan of horse racing,  Oaklawn is the home of horse racing in Arkansas. The track gained fame by producing a number of Kentucky Derby championship horses throughout the years. Open from January to late April or early May, Oaklawn offers an array of live, simulcast, and instant horse racing (historical race wagering).

Outside of downtown Hot Springs, you'll find one of Arkansas' best botanical gardens, Garvan Woodland Gardens, located on a 210-acre peninsula on Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs National Park. Strolling through the gardens and taking photos is a relaxing way to spend the day.

Hot Springs is a great destination for families as it has many family-friendly attractions. In the warmer months, many families make a stop at the Magic Springs Theme and Water Park . However, even in the cooler months, there are many things to see that will keep kids occupied.

The Josephine Tussaud Wax Museum, The Maxwell Blade Theater of Magic , and Pirate's Cove Adventure Golf are all popular family attractions on Central Avenue, along with the  Mid-America Science Museum , one of the best "hands-on" museums in the United States.

Tiny Town  is a family-run attraction consisting of a series of handmade miniature villages and an interactive model railroad. It claims to have "the oldest kid-size village and railroad in the U.S." Tiny Town is a bit away from Central Avenue but not that hard to find.

A trip to the Hot Springs Mountain Tower, which takes you 180 feet above the mountain, will give you an idea of the grandeur of the city and its park. The mountain tower is just about five minutes away from Central Avenue, and the energetic can hike up to the tower from Central Avenue on one of the many hiking trails.

The town's hotels offer many amenities, but most have the best thermal spas in the region, drawing visitors from around the world to this small Arkansas town.

The historic Arlington Resort Hotel and Spa  opened in 1924 and was the biggest hotel in the state at the time. Presidents, celebrities, sports stars, and even Al Capone (he liked room 442 because it overlooked the Southern Club) have slept there.

Another popular hotel in Hot Springs is the historic  Park Hotel,  which was completed in 1929. This gorgeous hotel building is a great example of Spanish Revival architecture.

Visitors hoping to experience the rich food culture in this Arkansas town can start their day off with a trip to the famous  Pancake Shop , which features one of the top breakfast menus in the state. Alternatively, visitors can check out  Bleu Monkey Grill , a newer establishment great for some bistro-style American food.

Rolando's  is a great spot for lunch, with a menu of tasty Mexican food. For vegetarians, try Cafe 1217 and sample their fresh sandwiches, salads, and soups, as well as a number of quick yet creative options that are mostly vegetarian-friendly.

Warm Springs Pools, Virginia

The main pool here is enclosed by a stunning octagonal stone basin originally built in 1761. Guests soak under the skylight of a domed ceiling inside the Gentlemen’s Bathhouse, believed to be the oldest spa structure in the U.S. A second bathhouse was built in the 1870s. Presidents Thomas Jefferson and Franklin D. Roosevelt reportedly visited Warm Springs Pools back in the day. Both bathhouses are owned and operated by The Omni Homestead Resort and reopened in 2023 after extensive renovations.

Chena Hot Springs Resort, Fairbanks, Alaska

One of the more remote soaking spots on this list, Chena Hot Springs Resort is located in Fairbanks, Alaska. The resort offers interesting activities all year, including the Aurora Ice Museum, but we recommend visiting during the winter months. The hot springs offer a cozy respite from Alaska's bitter temperatures, and you might even spot the northern lights as you soak.

Dunton Hot Springs, Dolores, Colorado

Dunton Hot Springs , an 1800s ghost town-turned-upscale resort, offers a variety of hot pools in a picturesque setting. Soak inside the bathhouse or in an outdoor spring, or book the Well House for your own private hot springs experience.

Yellowstone Hot Springs, Montana

After safely viewing the thermal basins and geysers from a distance at Yellowstone National Park, experience a dip in some geothermal waters for yourself. You cannot soak in the national park's hot springs, as they can be very dangerous, but you can go for a dip in the warm mineral waters of the Yellowstone Hot Springs in Montana, which is a 30-minute drive from the park's North Entrance.

Castle Hot Springs, Arizona

This dreamy resort is the ideal destination for travelers looking for a luxurious hot springs experience. Secluded pools are located within the beautiful desert landscape, offering stunning scenery for soaking; and an all-inclusive stay here comes with farm-to-table meals, access to the springs, and activities like guided hikes and farm tours.

Utah Crater, Midway, Utah

Utah Crater  is a unique beehive-shaped limestone crater containing a 65-foot-deep hot pool. It's so deep that the crater has become a major diving destination and claims to be the only place in the U.S. where you can scuba dive in warm water. Don't worry, though: plenty of people go just to swim and soak at the surface.

Hot Springs National Park, Hot Springs, Arkansas

No list of hot springs in the U.S. would be complete without Hot Springs National Park , located in Hot Springs, Arkansas. See the thermal water in its natural setting at the Display Spring or Hot Water Cascade before visiting Bathhouse Row. There are no outdoor hot springs suitable for bathing at this park, but you can visit the nearby Buckstaff Bathhouse or Quapaw Baths to soak in the geothermal waters.

Glenwood Springs, Colorado

With mountains, lakes, and a canyon, Glenwood Springs has outdoor activities for everyone. Once you've spent a day hiking or hitting the slopes, take a dip in one of the hot springs. Glenwood Hot Springs Resort is the most famous because it's home to the world's largest mineral hot springs pool. Iron Mountain Hot Springs features a bathhouse and 16 geothermal pools overlooking the Rocky Mountains .

Truth or Consequences, New Mexico

Uniquely named Truth or Consequences (aka "T or C"), this spot known for its hot springs, which are fed by a rift along the Rio Grande. The pools around here are mostly commercially owned, and the ones at Riverbend Hot Springs are arguably the most appealing. Pick from a string of pools, varying from 95 to 107 degrees, ideally set along the river for a seriously serene soak in "healing" spring water.

15 Best Things to Do in Hot Springs Village (Arkansas)

Hot Springs Village sits abreast Garland and Saline Counties in the central part of the state and had nearly 13,000 residents at the time of the last census.

By acreage, it’s the largest gated community in the country. It is also a significant regional retirement destination that’s known for its natural beauty and almost nonexistent crime.

Located near a few metro areas and some of the state’s most scenic natural land, it offers a wide variety of cultural, historical and natural attractions that are worth a look while visiting the area.

Below are 15 of the best things to do in and around Hot Springs Village, Arkansas.

1. Hot Springs National Park

For more than a few reasons, Hot Springs National Park is probably unlike any other national park you’ve visited.

Located on downtown Hot Springs’ bath row, the park’s urban setting and relatively small size make it unique. The best way to learn about the area’s fascinating history is to book a guided tour with a park ranger.

In many ways, it’s like going back in time. The tour will be equal parts history and geology that you’ll probably find interesting and informative.

The tour will leave plenty of time to enjoy the park’s therapeutic waters and other nearby attractions as well.

2. Fordyce Bathhouse and Museum

Back in the day, the Fordyce Bathhouse was one of the town’s swankiest. It’s now a museum and visitor’s center that would be a great place to stop not long after you’ve gotten into town.

The building has been restored to near original condition and includes many of the amenities that it featured in years past, like interesting, antiquated exercise equipment and therapy devices that purportedly relieved symptoms from a long list of ailments.

At its height, it was the exclusive domain of well to do businessmen, shady gangsters, and crooked politicians – though the last two may be one and the same.

3. Hot Springs Mountain Tower

Situated at the pinnacle of Hot Springs Mountain overlooking the town, the tower was built in the early ‘80s. A view from the top will give guests an unobstructed view of the countryside. On a clear day, it’s possible to see more than 100 miles away according to locals.

Reachable by stairs and an elevator, there are observation scopes at the top if your eyes need a bit of help.

If you’re up for a physical challenge, it’s more than 300 steps to the top, but your effort will be rewarded with burned calories and breathtaking vistas.

4. Lake Ouachita

With nearly 50,000 acres of surface area, Lake Ouachita is Arkansas’ largest and is a hotspot for watersports and outdoor enthusiasts from many surrounding states.

It’s one of the southeast’s premier bass fishing lakes and holds professional tournaments nearly every year.

In addition to fishing, waterskiing, swimming, and pleasure boating are favorite activities. There are nearby campgrounds, forest trails, and amenities like boat launches, bathrooms, and playgrounds.

It’s not far from town but can get pretty crowded during peak season when the sun is shining, so if you prefer to avoid the crowds, consider visiting during the week or in less popular months.

5. Bathhouse Row

Hot Springs’ historic bathhouse row was once a place full of interesting characters with sketchy backgrounds, and though that still may be the case, it’s a lot more family-friendly now than it was back then.

Gone from the streets are the slick gangsters and their dashing gals from days long gone. Though most of the bathhouses along the row date from the early 1900s, their accommodations were considered top-notch by the standards of the day.

There are restaurants, coffee shops and even a microbrewery nearby, so consider a self-guided walking tour to get an overview of the town’s layout and recreation options.

6. Mid-America Science Museum

The Mid-America Science Museum in Hot Springs is one of the region’s most diverse and visited attractions. Its primary goal is to instill in young ones a love for the many wonders of science.

With tons of exhibits, displays and interactive activities designed to keep children interested and engaged, it’s a great place to spend a few hours for adults and children alike.

Located on Mid America Boulevard not far from the springs, it’s a great way to spend a few afternoon hours after a morning soaking in the spring’s therapeutic waters.

Admission is reasonable considering the museum’s scope.

7. Ron Coleman’s Crystal Mine

With its abundance of caves, hot springs and crystals, the landscape and hidden caves around Hot Springs are wonderfully unique. One of the area’s most fun and quirky things to do is hit the crystal mines and see what you can find.

Ron Coleman’s Crystal Mine offers an inexpensive way to get outdoors, breath some fresh air, and see some of the amazing things that lie just beneath the earth’s surface.

Not everyone finds a memorable crystal, but many do, so keep digging as long as your energy holds out.

Keep in mind that digging for crystals is dirty and exhausting work, so plan accordingly and don’t show up on an empty stomach.

8. Garvan Woodland Gardens

Spread over more than 200 acres, Garvan Woodland Gardens on Arkridge Road is owned and managed by the University of Arkansas. In addition to their beautiful grounds and an amazing variety of plants, their primary goals are research and education.

The land for the gardens was graciously donated to the university in the ‘80s. They often host exhibits, guest speakers and educational opportunities throughout the year, so if you stop by on a whim, you’ll never know what you might find.

9. Ouachita National Forest

At just shy of two million acres, Ouachita National Forest covers vast expanses of forested and mountain land between the border of Arkansas and Oklahoma.

With dozens of miles of trails, numerous campsites and a host of other activities available to outdoor lovers, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it’s one of the area’s most popular outdoor destinations.

Amateur rock hounds are attracted by the huge vein of crystals that runs through the area, and hunters and fisherman are drawn here as well.

The terrain is pretty remote and rugged, so familiarize yourself with the area and pack the things you’ll need before heading out into the wild.

10. Magic Springs Theme and Water Park

During the dog days of summer, the climate around Hot Springs can get blisteringly hot and humid. If you happen to be there with kids during those months, you’ll want to find a cool spot or two.

Magic Springs Theme and Water Park is located off Highway 70 just outside of town, and if you’ll be coming from Little Rock, it’s still less than an hour away.

According to those who ought to know, it’s the only kind of park of its kind in the state, so take advantage of all it has to offer if you’ve got the time.

It’s open seasonally and includes all the slides, pools and fountains you’d expect.

11. Superior Bathhouse Brewery and Distillery

Not many bathhouses have breweries and distilleries on site, but the Superior Bathhouse has both.

It’s unique in that it’s the only brewery and distillery located on the grounds of a national park anywhere in the country. It was the brainchild of a woman from New Jersey who was determined to recreate the fantastic beers she enjoyed on a trip to Europe.

The water in the hot springs bubbles to the surface at nearly 144 degrees; it’s this water that’s used in the brewing and fermentation processes.

They’ve only been open for a few years, but they’re gaining quite a following, so stop by for a soak, a pint, and a cocktail.

12. Grand Promenade

Running about a half mile between bathhouse row and Hot Springs Mountain, the Grand Promenade isn’t really all that grand, but what it lacks in length it makes up for in accessibility and quaintness.

After a leisurely morning or afternoon stroll along the promenade, it’ll be hard not to wonder about the high-rollers who strolled the same path decades ago.

The area was once considered the Las Vegas of its time, well before that desert mecca was even conceived; it hosted an eclectic group of high society folks, who came for the gambling, rabble-rousing and the spring’s warm therapeutic waters.

13. Gangster Museum of America

You might expect to find The Gangster Museum of America in New York, LA, or Chicago, but it’s conveniently located right in downtown Hot Springs.

Guided tours are available, and the museum’s multiple rooms are decked out in different themes. You’ll likely find it fascinating learning about the lives of the guests who used to frequent the area.

From hit men on the lamb to bank robbers and swindlers on the run, the town had a little bit of everything and wasn’t short on flash and swagger.

During the peak season, the museum can get crowded, so consider a visit during the fall or winter if you’d like to have the place to yourself.

14. The Galaxy Connection

If Star Wars, sci-fi and superheroes are your cup of tea, then a stop at Galaxy Connection on Central Avenue in Hot Springs would be a wise choice.

The museum was inspired by all things related to space, and guided tours from the proprietor are a big hit.

For a very reasonable price, you’ll have access to not only the displays and exhibits but lots of fascinating insights from your guide as well.

Much of what you’ll see is related to Star Wars and includes figures, weapons like light-sabers and blasters, and the robes worn by some of the epic’s main characters.

15. Mountain Valley Spring Water Visitor Center & Museum

Admittedly, visiting the world headquarters of a bottled water company doesn’t sound as fun as mixing paint in the basement, but with an open mind and an extra hour or two, you might find that it’s an interesting and educational place.

You’ll learn how water is processed, purified, bottled and shipped, and you’ll probably be surprised to know just how big the market for bottled water is worldwide.

The headquarters are located near a visitor center and other area attractions, so once you’ve had your tour and learned all you’d ever want to know about bottling water, you’ll have the rest of the day to dedicate to other adventures.

 This chapter outlines the nexus between tourism and infrastructure development for the optimal use of hot spring waters in Nepal. Many hot springs are still poorly known or underutilized for the lack of accessible roads, lack of accommodation facilities and popularization. This chapter provides information about the current road networks in the hilly and mountainous areas where most of the hot springs are located. It also briefly describes the spring sites where hotels, restaurants and homestay facilities are available. Supported by interesting examples of Japan and Iceland, it stresses the need to invest in infrastructure development while maintaining natural beauty for the promotion of tourism in geothermal sites.

What’s Colorado’s biggest tourist attraction?

There are a lot of reasons to visit Colorado. From skiing and hiking to soaking in hot springs and taking in the scenery from one of the state’s many picturesque mountain towns, there’s something for everyone looking for an outdoor escape.

But what’s the state’s single biggest tourist attraction? One Coloradan asked CPR News’ Colorado Wonders the question.

The answer: Rocky Mountain National Park. The 415-square-mile park in northern Colorado, which was created by President Woodrow Wilson in 1915, has more than 4 million visitors annually, according to Jamie Richards, a spokesperson for the park. It’s the fifth-most visited national park in the U.S. 

Unlike some other national parks, like Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, Rocky Mountain National Park doesn’t get a lot of international visitors, Richards said.

“We're very much a local regional park,” she said. “Roughly 30 to 40 percent of visitors to Rocky Mountain National Park come from Colorado.” 

Visitation has been on a steady upward trend for the past century, but attendance fluctuates with what’s going on in the world. Take, for instance, the boom in attendance in 2021 as people flocked to open spaces during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. But it can work in the other direction, too. 

“If you take time to think about it, there's usually societal or economic pressure …  the years of World War II, for instance, the time around 9/11. So you see dips in national parks across the board at certain periods in time through our history, “ Richards said. 

A lot of visitors to Rocky Mountain National Park are daytime visitors traveling from their homes on Colorado’s Front Range. Or they’re staying with family and friends who live there.

But it’s not all-day trippers at the park. There are plenty of people who stay overnight. Those vacationers often end up staying in the small town at the base of the park — Estes Park.

“Estes Park has really grown into its own role as a tourist destination, but everything is really centered around Rocky Mountain National Park,” said Claire Molle, a spokesperson for the local tourism organization, Visit Estes Park. 

Molle is a native of the town. 

“It’s been very unique,” she said of growing up next door to a national park. “You kind of don't realize it until you go elsewhere and you're like, wait, the whole world is not this little snow globe family vacation mountain town.” 

And, according to Molle, some things never get old. 

“I absolutely love watching people get really excited when they see an elk because they've never seen one before,” she said. “That's what this town is about – bringing people here to experience something they might have never experienced before.”

Her favorite spot is the Emerald Lake hike, one of the park’s most popular and accessible trails. 

“I have this awesome memory of hiking there in the evening with my dad, and it felt like there was no one on the trail at that time, and it felt like you were in a fairy storybook, like a fairytale,” Molle said. 

It’s pretty tough to get the Emerald Lake hike to yourself these days. The timed entry system that started in 2020, which requires a reservation to get in during peak hours, will be in effect again this summer starting May 26. 

Richards, the park’s spokesperson, says they’ve been experimenting with different ways to manage congestion for a while. She notes that you can still get into the park without a reservation, but you might have to be flexible about what time you visit. 

“You can come in before nine or wait until after two … And if there’s a time of day that you really want, we create opportunities to get your timed reservation a month before your arrival dates or [by] releasing passes the night before,” Richards said.

If you want to sneak in a trip to the park before the summer crowds start to descend, now is a good time. National Park Week starts this weekend. Entry into Colorado’s number one tourist attraction will be free on Saturday, April 20.

Why the Omni Homestead Resort is beloved by presidents and hot springs lovers

Set in the Allegheny Mountains of Virginia, Hot Springs was founded around the waters that have attracted generations of people, including Indigenous tribes and several American presidents. The town is also home to the Omni Homestead Resort , considered America’s first resort, not to mention a USA Today 10Best Readers' Choice Best Destination Resorts winner.

Sitting on 2,300 acres of wooded land, the red-brick hotel with its iconic clock tower and cupola feels like a castle. Designed in the Georgian Revival style, the resort has something for everyone: multiple bars and restaurants, two golf courses, a seasonal water park with slides and a lazy river, a ski slope, a Virginia wine-tasting room, and a wide range of activities from history tours to mountaintop zip-lining to clay shooting.

After a $150 million renovation in 2023, the storied and historic property has a new lease on life. Here’s everything you need to know about the Omni Homestead.

How old is the Omni Homestead Resort?

Before celebrities, presidents, and titans of industry made the Omni Homestead Resort their playground, the warm springs here were a draw for their healing properties.

In 1764, militia Captain Thomas Bullitt bought the first 300 acres, including seven natural mineral springs, for 30 shillings. By 1766, the first 18-room wooden hotel was complete, named the Homestead in honor of the homesteaders who built the resort and its bathhouses.

By the 19th century, visitors like Thomas Jefferson would "take the waters" — he soaked twice a day as treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. In 1832, a local doctor purchased the property and offered the first European-style treatments, like salt scrubs. A group of magnates, which included J.P. Morgan, bought the hotel 60 years later and gave it a much-needed facelift.

In the following years, the Homestead resort hosted numerous events and dignitaries, including the U.S. Women's Open Golf Championship in 1928. A ski resort entertained winter guests beginning in 1959. In 2016, the Omni Homestead celebrated its 250th anniversary, and, in 2023, the property reopened after a multimillion-dollar renovation.

What presidents have stayed at the Omni Homestead Resort?

In total, 23 presidents have visited or stayed at the Omni Homestead Resort and the hotel that predated it — among them Thomas Jefferson, William Howard Taft, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy.

You can toast these founding fathers in the Presidential Lounge , where portraits of these commanders in chief are on view.

The Duke of Windsor and a then-teenage Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis also enjoyed vacations at the Homestead resort; she reportedly learned how to play golf here. Photos of these legendary folks can be seen around the property.

Now a part of the Omni Homestead property, the Warm Springs Pools are a part of about 100 thermally warmed springs along the edge of the Virginia and West Virginia border. Indigenous people of the area were attracted to these waters for the health benefits for thousands of years; the healing waters of these hot springs still bring people to the Homestead resort today.

The first octagonal stone basin was built around the thermal springs in 1761, making it the first spa structure in the U.S. It underwent significant renovations in 2022 with new men's and women's facilities, and family-friendly and co-ed swimming time. Reservations are required for the 50-minute sessions.

The Spa at the Omni Homestead has another hot spring inside its Serenity Garden. Also fed by spring water, the indoor pool, built in 1904, sits under a beautiful skylight. Day passes are available for non-hotel guests.

How much does it cost to stay at the Omni Homestead?

Room rates start at $488 per night for a traditional room with a queen bed. Premier and luxury rooms and suites are available for a higher rate. Some rooms also have balconies and working fireplaces. Guest amenities include daily housekeeping, Wi-Fi, luxury Nest toiletries, and in-room coffee makers.

The hotel also hosts its “Southern Social Hour” with drinks and snacks in between meals at the resort's restaurants. Don't miss the famed Audubon Dining Room for dinner and a casual breakfast at Martha's Market, the on-site coffee shop.

Omni Homestead can be accessed by car from major cities like Washington, D.C. The closest airports are Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport, near Harrisonburg, and Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport, each around two hours away. Amtrak service is also available from the Clifton Forge station on the Cardinal line, located about 45 minutes away.
