Whether you are an adrenaline junkie, looking for your next big thrill, or a history buff interested in exploring Mayan ruins, Cancun has something for you. Here are the top 10 best Cancun excursions this year.

10. Catamaran Tours to Isla Mujeres

A great way to spend a day on your Cancun vacation is taking a catamaran to Isla Mujeres. Isla Mujeres is a beautiful island 8 miles off the coast of Cancun. The island has serene beaches, great restaurants, beautiful scenery, coral reefs, and much smaller crowds than Cancun. Getting there via catamaran is an incredible experience. You will enjoy the beauty of the calm, shallow Caribbean waters as you sail out to your destination. Along the way, there is ample opportunity to swim and snorkel in the waters around the boat. Or just kick back, relax, and enjoy the trip. 

Once you arrive on the island, you can go for a swim, enjoy a gourmet lunch buffet on the beach, then explore everything the island has to offer. Popular activities include visiting the island’s secluded beaches, renting a golf cart to drive around and tour the island, fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, doing some shopping, or going to the bars and restaurants. 9. Speedboat Tour of the Nichupte Lagoon and Jungle

Located on the eastern coast of Cancan, the Nichupte Lagoon and its two channels running through the jungle are one of the most stunning natural sites in Cancun. Unfortunately, the lagoon is often overshadowed by the beaches and other sites. However, a visit to the lagoon is well worth the trip. 

One of the most popular activities on Nichupte Lagoon is a speedboat tour. The tour is led by a boat captain and tour guide, who take you through the lagoon and mangrove, and channels surrounded by jungle. The scenery on all sides of the boat is incredible, and the tour makes two stops, one at Punta Nizuc coral reef for snorkeling at the reef and viewing the sculptures, and one at the lagoon’s beach, so you can swim just off shore.

Nichupte Lagoon is an excellent way to see the natural beauty of the area, see marine wildlife and birds, and experience the adrenaline rush of speeding through the lagoon and channels in a motorboat.

8. Day Trip to Tulum

One of the best Cancun excursions is taking a day trip to the historic city of Tulum, located about an hour and a half drive from Cancun. Tulum is an incredible city, with some of the best preserved Mayan ruins in the country, all concentrated in one area, surrounded by a stone wall built by the Mayans. The best-preserved and most interesting structures in Tulum include the Temple of the Frescoes, the Temple of the Descending God, and El Castillo.

After touring the archaeological site, visitors can swim at Tulum’s beaches, including Playa Ruinas, just feet from the Mayan ruins. Tulum has great snorkeling and scuba diving sites, which are accessible from the beach. Many day trip excursions to Tulum also include walking tours of the jungle, and visits to the local cenotes–underwater caves and sinkholes with warm, calm waters, that make incredible places to snorkel and swim.

A tour to Tulum includes a tour guide who will pick you up at your  hotel in Cancun and drop you back off there at the end of the day. The tour is an incredible way to experience some of the best archaeological and natural sites that Mexico has to offer.

7. Swimming with Whale Sharks

Swimming with whale sharks is one of the most incredible Cancun excursions, and a once in a lifetime experience. Available between the months of May and September, when whale sharks migrate to the waters off Cancun, the tour includes transportation from your hotel to the marina, a light breakfast, then an approximately 45-minute boat ride out to where the sharks congregate. 

Once you arrive at the location, you will be given snorkel gear and can rent a gopro. Then you will jump into the water and swim with the whale sharks. Watching these massive, filter-feeding fish is an incredible experience that presents no danger, as the sharks only feed on plankton and very small fish. There are also rays, dolphins, and sea turtles in the area. 

A few things to note about this tour–the trip is generally estimated to take 45 minutes, but can take longer depending on where the whale sharks are congregating. The ride to the sharks can also be bumpy, and cause seasickness. The tours also do not allow you to use sunscreen, as it can be toxic for the animals. So be sure to wear long sleeves and a hat if you are prone to burning.

6. Horseback Riding Tours

One of the best Cancun excursions are the horseback riding tours from Rancho Bonanza. The tours take visitors through the jungles and incredible landscapes of the Riviera Maya backcountry, stopping at cenotes and lagoons along the way for a refreshing swim. The tours are designed for people with little to no experience riding horses, so you can feel comfortable regardless of your experience level. 

The tours are led by experienced, bilingual tour guides, who will explain where you are going and what you are seeing as you go. The wildlife in the area includes beautiful tropical birds and iguanas, which are plentiful in the trees and on the ground.

5. Cenote Exploration Tours

One of the most unique of Cancun’s excursions are the cenote exploration tours. The whole eastern Yucatan area, where Cancun is situated, is full of incredible underwater caves, caverns, and sinkholes, which are not found anywhere else in the world. The cenotes are full of fresh rainwater, which is usually surprisingly warm. The Mayans were fascinated by the cenotes, and believed that they were entryways to the underworld. 

Today, the fascination with cenotes continues, as hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to them each year, for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and other eco-adventures. You can book guided tours of the cenotes that leave from the resorts in Cancun and take the tour group to stunning cenotes, where you can rappel down rock walls to explore semi-covered cenotes, zipline over open cenotes, or swim with fish and aquatic flora.

3. Exploring Chichen Itza

Visiting Chichen Itza is an incredible experience that will fascinate both history buffs and casual tourists alike. The area was the site of a thriving Mayan city for hundreds of years, and today has some of the best preserved ruins from that time period. 

The site is dominated by a pyramid called Temple of Kukulcán or El Castillo, which stands 98 feet in height, and served as a sacred site to the Mayans. Other ruins at Chichen Itza include the Columns in the Temple of a Thousand Warriors, The Grand Ballcourt, and El Caracol. All of these structures are stunning to see in person, and make the trip well worth it.

The city has excellent scuba instructors, calm, crystal-clear waters to practice in, and amazing reefs and an underwater museum to explore once you get the hang of it.

For family vacations in Cancun:

The Fiesta Americana Condesa is one of Cancun's premier family hotels, scoring highly with its Fiesta Kids club and activities like sand castle building. And it's only around 15-20 minutes from the airport terminal.

If you and your family prefer self-catering, the Suites Villa Italia should measure up. Spacious rooms with air con and kitchenettes are the norm here, while public buses stop right outside, making airport transfers simple.

For romantic vacations in Cancun:

Another premium option to consider is the Omni Cancun, where you can relax in your own villa but still access spa facilities and relax in the three cascading pools. The hotel can lay on shuttles or taxis on request, and it's only 9 miles to the airport.

For budget vacations in Cancun:

If price is an issue, the Krystal Cancun matches upmarket hotels in most areas at a fraction of the price, with a large private beach, an excellent Mexican restaurant and a lively kids' club. It's only around 22 minutes away from the airport, too.

The Aloft Cancun is another reliable low cost alternative. Located on the Boulevard Kukulcan, the Aloft has a bright, modern look and the facilities include pools and gyms. It's about 13 miles from the airport, so transfers don't take long.

He answered everyone’s questions with ease and was so helpful. Chichen Itzá was incredible but take lots of water, a hat and sunscreen. It got to 41 degrees whilst we were there! The cenote was even better than we thought it would be and the lunch we had there was great. Sea shoes aren’t necessary but would recommend! Pick up and drop off were on time and were super easy through the all inclusive option. The guided tour to Chichen Itza was very good. Our accomodations got a bit messed up on 2 of the three hostels. We reserved private rooms at all the hostels and only one hostel had a private room for us. Bamba eventually cleared up the problem and provided me with a refund.

Wonders of the Maya

This tour was AMAZING. Daniel, our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about all the Mayan sites we visited. He also did ALL THE WORK of securing admission tickets so that we did not have to wait in any long lines. Along the way, he took us to some wonderful & always delicious restaurants for lunch. He also advised us on good places to eat dinner in each of our hotel stays. What's more, he advised in several places to eat at the hotel since walking into the urban areas

Mini Wonders of the Maya

Miguel was an excellent guide that took us through Valladolid, Chichen Itza, Merida, Izamal and Uxmal. He knew the history and was able to answer every question we asked of him and gave us many good recommendations. This tour group never pushed us to buy any products at any point, but only stopped at a predetermined point for lunch every day, while dinner was up to us. Breakfast was always included. The only low point was the hotel on the last night (Merida) where the shower only had lukewarm water and the staff at the breakfast table kept messing up orders. Overall: the mini wonders of the Maya tour was the perfect amount of time to get to know a little bit of Mayan history. You can do a longer tour but doing 4 days is the perfect length before you may be off to a resort. I would definitely recommend this tour to any of my friends or family.

Mexico Yucatán Experience

Extremely well organised and planned tour, we packed so much in to the 10 days and had the best time. The value you get for your money is brilliant, with a lot of activities included in the up front price and options to do extra when you are there. Lau the tour guide was amazing, extremely knowledgeable about the area and give great tips on sight seeing, bars, restaurants etc at every stop on the tour. Also as a girl travelling, I have never felt safer as part of her tour group. Great trip if you want to immerse yourself in the culture while also having time to relax on the beach, highly recommend. Only downside was not all the accommodation had AC and it was extremely hot, especially in Bacalar. Other than that amazing!

Mayan Sun Southbound: Boat Rides & Ruins

Absolutely amazing experience. Very well thought out (except for couple of locations) and planned. Transportation in this route can be a nightmare. So it's a big plus to have that taken care of. G Adventure is amazing. CEO Suzy rocked. Great group of people, got along really well and made great connections. Some of the accommodations are too basic and couple of locations are not worth the journey. But the rest are just ????????????.

Extensive 6 day tour of Mexico and the history of the Mayans very good tour guides the hotels were good too! It was very enjoyable as on older couple it was quite a ‘full on’ tour with early starts and long drives but we still had a great time and it was the best way to get a real feel of the country.

Die Route und die Dauer der Tour durch das schöne Chiapas war für uns perfekt. Die Abwechslung von Natur und Kultur war optimal. Die Hotels waren bis auf eine Ausnahme (Palenque) gut, das Frühstück überall sehr gut. Der Comfort des Minibusses war ausbaufähig. Bei größerer Körpergröße gibt es eigentlich nur einen Sitzplatz, der in Frage kommt, der insbesondere auf längeren und kurvigen Strecken ungemütlich ist. Die Tourguides und Fahrer waren allesamt äußerst kompetent und freundlich. Insbesondere Hector und Francisco, die uns über mehrere Tage begleitet haben, haben die Reise zu etwas besonderem gemacht. Auch, weil sie uns bei gesundheitlichen Problemen beratschlagt haben. Am Ende der Reise konnten wir uns in Valladolid (statt Cancun) absetzen lassen, was unsere Weiterreise erleichtert hat.

The accomodations were great, the first tour guide was awesome. However, the second tour guide to Chichen Itza LOST me during the tour and I was traumatized in a sea of 4,000+ people...Stay close to the guide!

Contiki went above and beyond - my whole trip was jam packed full of amazing "cultural experiences"! I'd definitely go Contiki again!!

What people love about cancun tours.

Absolutely fantastic. Our contact at Bamba Experiences was so responsive and helped us in a number of tight spots. On one morning, our tour guide for Chichen Itza never showed up. Bamba immediately called them and worked out another tour day for us. We were blown away. Other than that, the lodgings were very comfortable. Nicer locations were slightly further away from the city centre, however, so I would suggest giving people 2 options for lodgings (and then they can prioritize convenience over ambiance, if they wish). Also, finding an English-speaking clerk at the bus stations (to print our tickets) was a little daunting, so perhaps offering us the chance to pre-print bus tickets before our vacation would be more useful. Other than that, it was great and very well-priced. I will 100% be booking another trip with Bamba again.

Thoroughly enjoyed this tour, it was just what I was looking for. Daniel was a lovely guide. Lots of travelling but very well organised and sufficient time at each place, considering the itinerary. Very nice hotel in Valladolid. Hotel in Merida was in a good location but was noisy (though I was fine and slept well as I wore ear plugs ?).

Cancun is a major resort destination on the Yucatan Peninsula overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. Sargassum is a free-floating seaweed that is especially prolific in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. While beneficial to ocean life, these large free-floating seaweed mats often wash up on beaches. The amount of seaweed on the beaches fluctuates based on the time of year and ocean currents. While resorts do their best to maintain the beaches for their guests, you may experience some inconvenience during your stay.

This is an early morning excursion to Chichen Itza, which is an ancient Mayan site.

The tour organized by Amigo Tours will last for 12 hours and you will be taken around the site and briefed of its history and culture.

Included in the tour is also a lunch buffet before and after which (preferably before, so you can work up an appetite) you can take a dip in the cenotes, a natural sinkhole formation that the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico is famous for.

Whale sharks are often called gentle giants of the ocean and truly remarkable creatures.

If you have seen photographs of these mammals, you know what I am talking about — magnificent, aren’t they?

Now, imagine being able to swim alongside these wonders of nature.

In Cancun, you can!

These tours are typically offered between May and mid-September and you can book them well in advance.

The tours will also last for 7 hours which will include breakfast and lunch.

I would highly recommend carrying some medicine to prevent motion sickness if you are prone to that.

You may also want to inquire about rash guards as the operators are likely to discourage you from wearing sunscreen in the water in order to protect the reefs and local marine life.

You will arrive at the dock by 7:30 am after being picked up from the hotel.

This is truly an experience of a lifetime!

5. Cancun Adventure – Cobá and Tulum Private Tour (from $385)

It takes only 12 people every day and the operators treat all their guests with the greatest amount of comfort and luxury.

This includes an air-conditioned bus or van that will pick you up from your local hotel and drive to Coba and Tulum, archaeological sites that are located slightly more than an hour’s drive from Cancun.

You will be given two hours at each of these sites and you can explore on your own within that stipulated time.

Of course, the tour guides are always available if you would like anything clarified.

The cost of the trip also includes a lunch buffet of traditional Mayan food.

You can ask for a hotel pickup as early 7 am and be on your way before other tourists start thronging these sites.

This is a protected natural reserve and not too many visitors are allowed per day.

If you make a reservation early on, you and your family can be one of the 200 people that are allowed to visit the island everyday.

This preserved area offers some of the most stunning sights that nature can provide.

You will be able to spot a variety of different birds and also a vibrant marine life if you decide to snorkel.

On the way back to Cancun, you will also make a stop at Isla Mujeres, another stunning slice of nature in the Carribean Sea.

From the preliminary research I have conducted, I find that the reviews indicate this is a good tour for young adults, couples and groups of friends.

If you are traveling with a baby or young kids, you may find the atmosphere a bit too boisterous.

The cost of the ticket also includes breakfast and lunch and the tour begins at 9:30 in the morning and goes on till 5 pm every day.

Cancun without the crowds: Meet Isla Mujeres, a quieter Mexican getaway

As soon as I arrived at Isla Mujeres, I knew I was going to experience a completely different side of Cancun.

With turquoise-blue waters, soft sand beaches and ancient Mayan ruins, Cancun is one of the top travel destinations for Americans seeking out a tropical getaway. Located on the Yucatán Penisula, the city drew 30 million visitors in 2022. It’s an easy place to visit and offers visitors the most hotels in the country . 

A gorgeous beach locale? Definitely. Peaceful? Not exactly.

But looking out to the bright blue horizon, you’ll see the secluded haven I’m going to instead: Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets . 

Those looking to escape the loud parties and crowds of Cancun but still bask in the Yucatan’s natural beauty should consider Isla Mujeres, a small island 8 miles northeast of Cancun. In 2022, Isla Mujeres saw only 20% of Cancun’s tourist numbers , which makes it a more serene beach vacation.

Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a newly opened all-inclusive luxury resort that caters to a quieter Mexican getaway. A personal butler, four levels of infinity pools and even private boat transfers to and from Cancun are just a few of the amenities guests at the luxurious adults-only resort can take advantage of.

Here’s what it’s like to vacation at Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets. 

What makes Isla Mujeres so special?

Isla Mujeres translates to “Island of Women,” and it is said to be where the Mayan goddess Ixchel resides. The only way to reach the island is by boat, a 15-minute ride from Cancun.

Like Cancun, Isla Mujeres has pristine beaches but with a more laid-back vibe. Think of the island as a less overwhelming, more intimate version of the tourist hub. There is a downtown square, but it’s nothing like Cancun’s party block, which I found overwhelming the last time I visited. 

Here’s what Isla Mujeres has to offer visitors: 

• On display is Isla Mujeres’ natural beauty. The island is surrounded by an azure sea so vivid it looks as if it were dyed. The calm waters invite travelers to spend most of their time there, and the island is known for flourishing marine life – it’s sometimes called the whale shark capital. If you don’t spot one of these docile sea creatures, whose population has declined more than 50% over the past 75 years, there are still plenty of fish and giant shells to see below the surface. Even the resort pays tribute to the gentle giants by being the home base for shark conservation nonprofit Saving Our Sharks Foundation. A portion of each stay at Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets goes to the local organization, meaning guests are supporting “marine biodiversity conservation, promoting sustainable fishing practices, conservation efforts and responsible tourism,” Erica Doyne, senor vice president of marketing and communications at Hyatt Hotels Corp., told USA TODAY.
• As for non-living sea wonders, the island is home to the Museo Subacuático de Arte , one of fewer than 10 underwater art museums worldwide. Since 2010, visitors have been able to swim among the more than 500 life-size submerged sculptures, which also add biomass to the reef system. If going below the surface isn’t your thing, you can book a tour by glass-bottom boat.
• Though the most popular of ancient Mayan temples, Chichén-Itza, is on the peninsula, Isla Mujeres has its share of cultural and historical sites. Visitors can make their way to the Mayan Temple of Ixchel, perched atop a striking seaside cliff in Punta Sur on the most southern point of the island, a short distance from the resort. On the mornings of the new year, Isla Mujeres residents gather here to greet the first rays of sunlight. 

What is it like to stay at Impressions Isla Mujeres?

Relaxing and recharging are the focal points of the adults-only resort, which opened in 2023 as the second property in the Impression by Secrets brand, run by World of Hyatt. You can skip the front desk; check-in is done on the boat. Upon arrival at the dock, guests are greeted with a welcome drink and their personal butler, who is easily reachable via WhatsApp. During my stay, I often forgot I was in Cancun and not some private island in the Caribbean (or at least, how I imagine that would be like).

The property: The ocean is the resort's centerpiece, and its vistas are prioritized, from the rooftop infinity pool to the oceanfront rooms with their private terrace complete with an outdoor hot tub. Woven throughout the property are subtle reminders of the sea and the creatures within, such as sculptures of whale sharks by Mexican artist César Menchaca using upcycled plastic and elegant lobby seating echoing the shape of a starfish. 

The property was once an abandoned hotel, but you’d never know it. Looking up, you can see how the whitewashed resort pays tribute to its location by resembling a seashell. Its cliffside location, tucked-away courtyards and archways give it a Santorini architectural feel. 

“Built into the natural landscape atop a coastal cliff, the development of Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets was designed with purpose and inspired by a profound respect for the natural beauty and cultural richness of Isla Mujeres,” Doyne said.

A dock wraps around the 125-room resort’s beachfront, providing plenty of cabana space for guests to hunker down in and enclosing a swimming oasis. Hammocks hang off the dock, inches above the water, inviting you in for a daytime nap. 

With spring break around the corner, it'll cost two adults during the week of April 5-12 about $1,100 a night for an ocean-view room with two double beds, or one king bed and a sofa area. This rate includes a terrace, free laundry service, boat transfers, all amenities, and, of course, food and beverage. You can also use World of Hyatt points to book, and there’s a member rate.

The same week at fellow Isla Mujeres high-end resort Hotel Privilege Aluxes Isla Mujeres will run you more than $4,190 a night for an ocean-view suite, which has a large living area, food and beverage and similar amenities. (Although this seems a high rate, it is cheaper later in the year. A normal room is $1,949 in September, but there’s no terrace or promised ocean views.)

Eating well: The all-inclusive food and drink at Impression Isla Mujeres were top-notch, with eight dining options to choose from, ranging from Italian to Japanese cuisine and nine bars and lounges. My favorite restaurant was the breezy La Vista, which served Mexican fare to outdoor tables overlooking the water. 

It was my first time at an all-inclusive resort, and I indulged almost daily in the unlimited room service, with help from an in-room touchscreen tablet. If I didn’t hear the doorbell, staff would place the food in a two-way cabinet, lending to my peace and quiet.

To do: Besides the difficult choice between lounging by the pool or beach, guests can participate in robust daily programming, from wellness offerings to cultural enrichment workshops. I attended a smoke-cleansing session during sunset, and not only were the views breathtaking but I learned more about the Indigenous spiritual practice. Those who want more of a thrill can try out the four-story waterslide that empties into the ocean, go snorkeling or take one of the free bikes out for a ride. It takes only about 40 minutes to cruise the entire island.
