Also known simply as SHU, the university offers more than 60 majors in eight schools, with graduate programs in the Stillman School of Business , the school of education and the law school , which is home to a very highly ranked health care law program. But before they get that far, SHU students can explore more than 100 campus organizations, Greek life or recreational sports. More serious athletes can try out for one of the more than 15 Seton Hall Pirates varsity sports teams, which compete in the NCAA Division I Big East Conference. Notable alumni of SHU include Max Weinberg, the longtime drummer in Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band and the band leader on the television show "Late Night with Conan O’Brien."

Will always be home 7 months ago One year into my program and only one to go, my time already feels like it's being cut short. I've found such a tight-knit community here at Seton Hall, of not only students but of top-notch faculty and staff. There's an unparalleled support system that will keep you afloat during difficult times, and seeing a familiar face on campus is common and comforting. Can't speak enough about my little school, a great decision for an undergrad seeking a comfortable community with NYC in their backyard!

From NCAA final to NIT final, Seton Hall band director Debbie Sfraga passes baton

seton hall college visit

In February of 1987, as Seton Hall’s basketball program was first becoming competitive in the Big East under P.J. Carlesimo, athletics director Larry Keating placed a call to the university’s music department and asked a question.

“Does anybody over there know how to direct a band?”

Though there'd been some informal versions in the past, Seton Hall at that time had no official pep band. Debbie Sfraga, a first-year adjunct music professor, had experience directing the band at North Arlington High School. So she took the job, launched Seton Hall’s pep band the following fall (Carlesimo was an avid supporter of the endeavor), and a little over a year later found herself preparing to conduct at the 1989 NCAA Tournament final in Seattle, where the Pirates were facing Michigan for all the marbles.

Michigan athletics director and football coach Bo Schembechler assumed the Wolverines’ band would have the honor of playing The Star-Spangled Banner before tip-off because, well, they were Michigan.

Much to his chagrin, it was determined by a coin flip.

“Larry came from a meeting and said ‘We got it,’” Sfraga recalled. “You’re playing the national anthem, and Bo is not happy.”

Said Sfraga, “My knees started shaking. This was just the second year of the band.”

Over 37 years and more than 1,000 men's and women's games, the sight of the longtime Tinton Falls resident conducting in a royal blue blazer (she estimates she went through 20 of them) became part of the fabric of Pirate basketball. Now, after mentoring roughly 600 student-musicians, arranging some iconic numbers and missing just three games (two due to illness, one for childbirth), Sfraga is passing the baton and heading into retirement.

“It was so much fun,” she said. “Band people are the nicest people in the world. I’ve made lifelong friends, I’ve been to their weddings, I’ve met their children. I had fun making music with them and fun being in the stands with them.”

Lasting contributions

A year after taking the job Sfraga extended the university’s fight song, “Onward Setonia,” from its original 40-second version by adding a drum solo, chant and reprise. The addition has become a mainstay of the beloved “flagman” routine at games.

“The first year when we played against other bands they’re playing forever and our fight song is only 40 seconds long,” Sfraga said. “I’m thinking this has got to stop – these people can’t outplay us.”

She also arranged one of the very first pep band versions of “Rock 'n' Roll (Part 2),” also known as the “Hey Song.” The stadium anthem had started to catch on through public address airings at some pro sporting events, and Keating heard Oklahoma’s band play it and asked Sfraga if she could add it to the repertoire. No published arrangement existed, so she bought the vinyl and handwrote it by ear.

As the hoops program thrived in the early 1990s, the song became an iconic part of Seton Hall games as student-fan “Gyrating Joe” Lorenzo would dance to it during a second-half timeout – often getting a snippet of air time on national TV. Within two years, formal sheet music was available for bands and it became widespread throughout college sports.

Much later, when Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie franchise launched in 2003, Sfraga found an early arrangement of the theme song and it’s been a gameday staple ever since.

A telling legacy

Perhaps Sfraga's most telling legacy is the steady stream of alums who returned to play with the band over the years, especially during winter break when the undergraduate ranks thin out. This past March, while the regular band played at the Big East Tournament for the women’s basketball team, a pep band composed entirely of alumni filled in for the men’s home finale against DePaul.

As the search for Sfraga’s replacement gets underway, “there are some alumni out there who can do the job,” she said, “and I really hope they apply.”

Her tenure ended in full-circle fashion. There were three raucous NIT games at old Walsh Gym – “those were amazing,” she said – and then, 36 years after getting Schembechler’s goat, a final championship game. For the first time in her career, there was a season-ending victory as the Pirates cut down the net at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse while the band played her version of the fight song.

“I kind of knew this was my last year, but I wanted a sign that I was making the right decision,” Sfraga said. “That was the sign. It was the only way to go out.”

LSU women's basketball to face Seton Hall at Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase in 2024-25

seton hall college visit

Another piece to LSU women's basketball' s nonconference schedule puzzle for the 2024-25 campaign has fallen into place.

Kim Mulkey, Aneesah Morrow, Flau'jae Johnson, Mikaylah Williams and company will take their show on the road to Connecticut this December to play Seton Hall as part of the Basketball Hall of Fame Women's Showcase to be held at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. The game is schedule for Dec. 17 with a tipoff time to be announced later. UConn and Iowa State are slated to be the other game at the event.

Tickets for the game go on sale Sept. 6.

Seton Hall is the second nonconference date filled for the Tigers. Another neutral site game on Dec. 8 with instate foe Grambling State was announced a few weeks ago, a contest that will be played at Brookshire Grocery Arena in Bossier City and will serve as a homecoming game of sorts for Williams, a Bossier native.

REQUIRED READING LSU women's basketball legend Seimone Augustus joining Kim Mulkey's coaching staff

Per records, LSU originally entered into an agreement with the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021 for a game that was slated to take place during the 2022-23 season but both parties mutually agreed to amend the game contract, which pushed the participation date for LSU back to last December but that game never happened. LSU was initially slated to face Virginia in the Hall of Fame Women's Showcase.

The program will receive $5,000 to play in the event, according to the contract, and will be responsible for all cost of travel to Connecticut. LSU will receive 75 complimentary premium tickets.

LSU still has at least 11 more nonconference games to fill to complete its 2024-25 schedule.

Mulkey's team is coming off an Elite Eight run last season where it fell to Caitlin Clark and Iowa in Albany, New York. The Tigers will look different next season as Angel Reese has graduated and moved on to the Chicago Sky in the WNBA while point guard Hailey Van Lith transferred to TCU.

But with Johnson, Morrow and Williams returning, three starters will be back for LSU and will be poised to eye another deep run in the NCAA Tournament.

The LSU women’s basketball team is heading to Connecticut in December to take part in the 11th annual Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase. The Tigers will face Seton Hall at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, on Dec. 17.

LSU opened last season playing in a Hall of Fame series event in Las Vegas against Colorado .

“We are really excited to bring LSU to the Mohegan Sun to play Seton Hall in December,” coach Kim Mulkey said in a release. “We have participated in Hall of Fame events before and are looking forward to do so once again.”

Mohegan Sun Arena is an hour from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, into which Mulkey was inducted in 2020 and Seimone Augustus — a former star player at LSU who was hired as an assistant last week — will be inducted in October as part of the 2024 class.

This will be the second meeting between the two teams after LSU won 58-40 during the 2010-11 season. The Pirates are coming off 17-15 season in which they lost in the first round of the WBIT.

Goldberg says Deion Sanders was responsible for WWE Hall of Fame career

Josh tolle | may 28, 2024.

seton hall college visit

  • Colorado Buffaloes

Before Bill Goldberg made his name in professional wrestling, he spent time with the Atlanta Falcons as a teammate of Deion Sanders.

The duo spent time reminiscing of their NFL days during the Memorial Day weekend in Boulder. They joined Colorado Buffaloes players for a cookout captured by Well Off Media . Sanders talked about wrestling matches inside the Falcons' locker room and how good Goldberg was against the competition. In fact, the Hall-of-Famer is responsible for launching his wrestling career.

"I guess I have to give him 100 percent credit for me being a professional wrestler," Goldberg said. "Cause I never would have done it."

Sanders' influence gave Goldberg one of the best futures he never could've imagined at the time. He retired from the NFL and went on to claim the WCW World Heavyweight Championship over Hulk Hogan. It was him against the NWO in most of the storylines throughout the late 90s. He eventually migrated over to the WWE and earned a spot in the Hall of Fame in 2018.

Goldberg's son, Gage, committed to Sanders and the Buffs earlier the year. The 6-foot, 205-pound middle linebacker from Boerne Champion (Texas) is part of CU Football's 2024 recruiting class. He was an absolute force during his senior year with 154 total tackles (7.5 for loss), eight hurries, four forced fumble, one sack, blocked field goal, and forced safety.
