  • 2021 Ultimate Southern Caribbean Cruise: Celebrity Equinox Dining Review

This cruise was our first return to the Celebrity Cruise experience since what we had been saying was our best cruise experience ever, our Celebrity Eclipse cruise to Argentina and Antarctica in Jan/Feb of 2020. While the destination can’t really compare in any way, the cruise experience was equally pleasing. With only 60% capacity on this Caribbean cruise, it was in some ways a better on board experience with ease of service in the dining, drinking, and theater venues.

We cruised on a last minute promotional rate package that did not include Celebrity’s Always Included Perks, and I can tell you that the value of that package generally exceeds the usual price difference of most last minute rates. However, with us having the Elite Loyalty Member Happy Hour, we think we came out ahead by not having it. Having the Gratuities, Beverages and WIFI included makes a big plus. As we were running our business from the ship, we needed to purchase the streaming WIFI in order to do WIFI calling. We wouldn’t have upgraded to the streaming packages if we hadn’t needed the WIFI calling, but we ended up using the streaming for watching Movies in the fitness center and football in the Craft Social Club with some new friends. We had free drinks from 5:00 to 7:00 pm with our Elite Plus loyalty status, so we were able to get by with those drinks and some glasses of wine with dinner for less than the daily cost of the beverage package. We paid our gratuities when we paid for our cruise so our gratuities were pre-paid.

Veranda Cabin

We were in a category 2B veranda cabin, which is 192 sq feet interior with a 54 sq foot balcony. I have two pictures from the Celebrity website below. The one with the orange and tan decor depicts the lay out of our cabin with the bed by the balcony and the sofa and desk near the bath. The second cabin with the blue X pillow is the current decor on the ship but depicts the alternative layout. The cabins are every other other one alternating configuration. The bath, while not huge, has enough room for one to undress and dress before or after the showering. The room comes also with several storage areas including a sliding door closet and dresser. The cabinet above the bed is also storage area. We were greeted by the Cellar Master with a bottle of champagne as she was a colleague of a Cellar Master we have sailed with many times. He arranged for her to bring us a welcome bottle of champagne.

There were really too many activities for me to do. During the day they offered an abundance of cruise activities like safe archery, ballroom dancing, fun dancing class out by the pool, arts and crafts workshops, casino lectures, music trivia, corn hole tournaments, games by the pool, pool Olympics, tennis, bocce ball, movies, lectures by the captain and ships officers about deployments of new ship and environmental initiatives . Plenty of activities that would keep anyone busy and engaged. Unfortunately, and here I go sounding like a broken record again, but I was working during the day most of the time. I did plan to go to trivia a couple of times as I am super competitive at it, but I got customer calls and had to work. The activities staff was always energetic and engaging. Our cruise director Shawna’s enthusiasm was contagious.

This ship had a beautiful, subdued decor throughout. Nothing over done or garish, just cool elegance through out.

Spa and Gym

Celerity offers an extensive spa and as a profit center of the ship, offers all different types of treatments and wellness services. The price of a massage is about what you might pay in a major city or in top notch land based resort, with most treatments being about $120 to $150. They offer discounts on port days, but on this cruise I never took them up on a treatment. The gym was well equipped but I would not say that all the equipment was in top shape running order. Many of the treadmill could not change elevation even when running a program that called for it. Often the TV channels did not work on the treadmills and other cardio equipment. Sometimes you could get a few channels but no sound or staticky sound, or the picture would fade in an out. If you have the streaming internet package, this is a good chance, to bring either your phone or your tablet and watch a movie while working out.

Bar Service and Venues

I have always found the Celebrity service to be exactly as described in their marketing intuitive without being intrusive. Generally, in any venue your are offered service before you have to waive someone down which makes for a very worry free vacation. The venues we enjoyed the most were the Sunset Bar for sail away happy hour, the passport bar to enjoy the pre-dinner bands and watch the dancers on the dance floor, the Craft Social where we enjoyed watching football, and the Sky Lounge for late evening music and dancing. The Craft Social has replaced the Cellar Master’s bar on the Equinox. It is also a featured venue on the new Edge class ships. It is more of a craft beer venue than a fine wine venue, but if there is a fine wine that you like on the dining room list or maybe one the specialty dining room lists that you would want them to have available for you all you have to do is ask.

On previous cruises the Cellar Master’s is our usual pre-dinner hang out because of the fine wine selections, but on this cruise with only the “Happy Hour” wines available to us we usually ended up at either the Sunset Bar or the Passport bar just off the main atrium on deck 4. For late night fun we found ourselves in the Sky Lounge for “Headline the Band’ which is like Karaoke but with the band playing live or late night disco parties. There were also a couple of pop up shows in the Grand Foyer which we could enjoy from either the Passport or Craft Social.

Entertainment

I thought the entertainers hit things out of the park on this cruise. The Celebrity singers, dancers and acrobats were excellent, though I have to admit of the 4 production shows, I only attended two as I had seen the other two multiple times and just thought it would be nice to do something a little different those nights.

The guest entertainers, except the rock and roll duo, all were fantastic. Heather, The Piano Lady, played the piano and sang a great variety of music from country to classic rock and current pop hits. She even had to pinch hit the third night of entertainment when one of the other guest acts fell and hit his head back stage. They had to reschedule that act, The Knights, who sang songs of “Knighted” British entertainers to a matinee on one of the last sea days. Heather stepped in and on the fly did her second show with no rehearsal with the band. She did a great job, again with more country and rock-in roll favorites.

The comedian, Kevin Jordan, was a total hoot. He was a former Los Angeles Police officer who started doing comedy one night on a dare. We attended both his early cruise show which was his “clean” show and his later show which was his adult themed show. Both shows were quite funny, and one of the things that made him unique was the way he found people in the audience and made impromptu jokes about them. There was one “kid” who was 18 and traveling with his mom, and the poor guy was forever know as “Eighteen” through out the cruise.

One of my favorite acts was the men’s classical and soul quartet “Vox Fourtuna” who were finalist on Britain’s Got Talent. One these guys was British and the rest were all American. Two of the guys in the act had played Simba in the Lion king either on Broadway, The West End or possibly a National Tour, and the other guys in the act were fabulous vocalists too.

The Rock Duo that I mentioned earlier were the only ones that were not quite up to Celebrity standards, as the female singer was very harsh and pitchy. I will give her the benefit of the doubt and say she might have had vocal strain or a soar throat, but there were better singers among the cruise guests at “Headline the Band” (aka Karaoke but with the band vs recorded tracks). We just snuck out of the theater early during a break on the rock-duo’s show.

There was also a violinist that did both classical and contemporary violin pieces, and a soprano vocalist, whom I did not see in her main show due to the big Michigan football game.

I didn’t film a lot of the entertainment as this was some of the only down time I had on my cruise, but it was all first rate and memorable.

Caribbean Shore Excursions Let You Feel the Island Vibe

It’s a fact: There’s nothing like a Caribbean cruise for chilling out, kicking back, and leaving real life behind for a bit, and it’s also a fact that booking Caribbean shore excursions is the perfect way to exponentially increase the chill factor.

On every port of call in the Caribbean , cruise excursions offer luxury options for amazing experiences: Choose beach breaks at private resorts on Punta Cana, Costa Maya, St. Croix , or Barbados to name a few, offering pristine beaches, pure pampering, and plenty of drinks; book a day of sailing from St. Thomas, Grenada , and other islands, aboard beautifully appointed yachts or catamarans, viewing the islands water-side as you glide across calm seas and bays with stops for swimming right off the boat, exploring remote beaches, and feasting on champagne and seafood; when docked at Philipsburg, St. Maarten , day-trip-it to St. Bart’s, often said to be one of the most elite islands in the Caribbean, with its 14 gleaming, white-sand beaches, chic restaurants, and designer boutiques that rival New York’s Madison Avenue.

Book Caribbean shore excursions to experience the most extraordinary watersports on each island port of call: Find your snorkel paradise in the calm, shallow, crystal-clear waters off Grand Cayman, St. John ,or Klein, Bonaire, as you swim around protected coral reefs and colorful tropical fish; scuba dive at amazing sites around Curaçao, Dominica, and Bonaire ; swim with stingrays at Grand Cayman , Curaçao, and Antigua, swim with dolphins at Punta Cana or with green sea turtles at Basseterre, St. Kitts, or Barbados ; cruise on a specially outfitted boat to spot dolphins and whales at St. Lucia .

When you schedule Caribbean shore excursions expect to be captivated by an island’s natural beauty: the raw power of Punta Cana ’s Blue Lagoon; the sheer limestone cliff and the spectacular view from the Cueva Ventana (Window Cave) in San Juan, Puerto Rico ; the Mountain Top on St. Thomas , with its breathtaking view of the Caribbean Sea and neighboring islands; the three-in-one Concord Waterfalls at Grand Etang Lake on Grenada.

As you cruise the Caribbean, get to know the islands’ distinguishing cultures and exciting cuisines through tours like “Mojitos and Mofongo” at San Juan; “Mount Gay Rum Experience” in Barbados; “Around the Island of Spice” on Grenada; “At Home Cooking with Chef Nicole” on Antigua; “Caribbean Cooks” on St. Kitts; and “Island Roots and Chocolate Traditions” in Cozumel . Experience tours and tastings of the Caribbean’s favorite spirit, rum in San Juan, Barbados, Martinique, and St. Croix.

Cool Cruiser

Can someone tell me if there are shopping ports, within walking, at the following ports:  Basseterre St Kitts, St. Georges Granada, Fort de France Martinique, Castries St. Lucia, and St. Johns Antigua?

Also, for Celebrity cruisers, specifically Celebrity Equinox, why are there no excursions at Basseterre St, Kitts?

Depending on when you sail, they may have just not been published yet.

Thanks

All the ports you mentioned, excepting Martinique of which I know nothing, have shopping near the port.

Got it. The other ports are showing all excursions but maybe as you said just not posted yet. Jan 2023 is a bit away. Thanks!!

As noted above, it's probably just too early for your cruise.

We did a similar itinerary on the Silhouette in December, and called at St. Kitts.  At that point, we had to take Celebrity shore excursions.  We booked the St. Kitts Scenic Railway, and I highly recommend it.  It's a tour of a good part of the island on an open-air train that used to bring sugar cane in from the fields.  The route runs between beautiful beaches and water on one side, and a volcanic peak on the other, with small villages along the way.  It's a really gorgeous ride.  There's excellent live narration, and all the rum punch and daiquiris (as well as water and soda) you can drink.

It turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and beautiful afternoons of our entire cruise.

Martinique seems to be starting up slowly. We have a cruise stopping by there in a few months, and it was only very recently that a handful of excursions posted. I wouldn't worry at all about a January cruise.

And if they still offer the longer excursion with a catamaran sailing back to the ship after the train trip, it is even better!

We sailed the ultimate southern in 2019.  In St Kitts

we took an excursion to cockleshell beach, with views of Nevis.   And incredible beach day!

I really wanted to do an excursion to Nevis from St. Kitts on our December cruise aboard the Silhouette, but it was cancelled, I'm sure because of covid restrictions.   As we sailed past Nevis on our way to docking at St. Kitts, I found myself thinking about how incredible it was that a someone born on that little spot in the Caribbean in the 18th Century could go on to have the remarkable life that Alexander Hamilton had, and to influence our country as much as he did.

We did the train, too, in April 2022 and thought it was one of the best excursions we’ve booked through Celebrity.

5,000+ Club

All of the ports have at least kiosk shopping.

Be aware however few shops on any of the islands are open on Sundays and holidays. In the Caribbean Christmas is celebrated for three days with limited shopping in many of the ports.

Most of the shopping revolves around t shirt type shops and glittering baubles.

I meant to mention that covid changed some of the shopping at the ports for at least some time (if not still).  A lot of the ports had a restricted area just off the ship with some shopping, but it was not much to look at--a bunch of junk stores for the most part.  Cruise passengers were not allowed to go outside that area unless they had an excursion.

Of course, a lot of that has gone by the wayside.  That's the good news.  The bad news is that many of these islands still are suffering a long lag to restart.  Shops closed, population left the islands, etc.  There's no telling what may actually find in January, though.

12 best Panama Canal cruises for a bucket-list trip

Donna Heiderstadt

A Panama Canal transit is a rite of passage for many cruise lovers. Experiencing this marvel of early 20th-century engineering appeals to those with a wide array of interests, from history and politics to colonial architecture and wildlife. Built by the U.S. government between 1903 and 1914, this 50-mile waterway linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans revolutionized shipping by creating an expedited route for the transit of cargo and, ultimately, cruise ship passengers.

Panama Canal itineraries are offered by almost every cruise line. Thanks to a 2016 canal expansion project, a third set of locks can now accommodate larger vessels. It's possible to cruise the Panama Canal on ships of all sizes (from 148 guests to more than 3,000) on itineraries that range from a week in the sun to a six-month world cruise.

Some ships sail a full transit of the canal, from the Atlantic to the Pacific or vice versa. These one-way journeys between Miami or Fort Lauderdale and Los Angeles or San Diego visit ports in Central America, South America, Mexico and California.

Others sail only a partial transit, entering the locks from the Atlantic and cruising into Lake Gatun before turning around and exiting again. These itineraries, sailing round-trip from Florida ports, combine the canal experience with island hopping in the Caribbean.

The array of options means that a Panama Canal cruise experience is possible even if you're short on time or have a limited budget — and chances are high that your favorite cruise line offers one or more itineraries. Most sailings attract couples, typically retirees, but if the timing is right, a Panama Canal cruise can also be a great multigenerational experience.

Here are a dozen of the best Panama Canal cruises to consider.

Holland America's 14- to 17-night Panama Canal cruises

celebrity cruise ultimate caribbean

Holland America offers a variety of Panama Canal cruises , but the most popular itineraries span 14 to 17 nights. They offer a full transit between Fort Lauderdale or Miami and San Diego, Seattle or Vancouver, British Columbia, or vice versa and are offered on multiple ships, including Koningsdam, Zuiderdam, Zaandam, Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam. These sailings call on Cartagena, Colombia; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; and Huatulco and Puerto Vallarta or Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Longer sailings also call on several Caribbean islands.

Who should go : Holland America ships sailing a full transit are popular with retired couples who appreciate the cruise line's consistency and good value. All four ships accommodate between 1,432 and 2,650 passengers and offer signature onboard experiences that include the Greenhouse Spa and the World Stage for evening production shows. The larger Eurodam, Koningsdam and Nieuw Amsterdam feature additional specialty dining options, such as Tamarind and Nami Sushi, as well as popular music venues B.B. King's Blues Club and Billboard Onboard.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises' 16-night Los Angeles-to-Miami cruise

Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' newest ship, Seven Seas Grandeur, debuted in November 2023 and will transit the Panama Canal on several occasions in the next few years. The 16-night Miami-to-Los Angeles (Dec. 13-29, 2024) and 16-night Los Angeles-to-Miami (Jan. 8-23, 2025) transits offer luxurious all-inclusive pampering, plus port calls in Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas and Acapulco, Mexico; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; Corinto, Nicaragua; Panama City; Cartagena, Colombia; and George Town, Grand Cayman.

Plan even further ahead for Grandeur's 22-night Miami-to-Los Angeles transit (Jan. 3-25, 2026) to enjoy additional Caribbean ports of call. From Jan. 25 to Feb. 9, 2026, the ship will sail a 16-night Panama Canal transit from Los Angeles to Miami with an itinerary similar to the 2024 and early 2025 cruises.

Who should go : This itinerary can be a wonderful splurge for a couple seeking to celebrate a milestone anniversary or birthday in a memorable way on a luxurious new ship. Prices start at a hefty $10,099 per person for a spacious balcony suite, but they also include airfare, transfers, gratuities, dining and beverages, Wi-Fi and shore excursions — meaning you'll hardly have any other vacation expenses.

Celebrity Cruises' 11-night Panama Canal & Southern Caribbean cruise

celebrity cruise ultimate caribbean

For a Panama Canal experience that begins and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Celebrity Cruises ' 11-night Panama Canal & Southern Caribbean itinerary is a great option. There's still time to book the Dec. 2, 2024, cruise or the half-dozen almost identical sailings that follow through April 2025. All sailings are aboard the 3,260-passenger Celebrity Beyond and visit Cartagena, Colombia; Colon, Panama; Oranjestad, Aruba; Kralendjik, Bonaire; and George Town, Grand Cayman (Willemstad, Curacao, replaces Grand Cayman on some 2025 sailings).

Who should go : Celebrity Beyond and its Edge-series sister ships appeal to millennials, Gen Xers and young-at-heart baby boomers who appreciate innovative design, entertainment and dining options. The ships are geared toward couples or groups of friends, but families with older teens might also enjoy the onboard vibe. There are no splash pools or waterslides for younger kids, although calls on three Caribbean islands offer aquatic fun.

Windstar Cruises' 7-night Costa Rica & Panama Canal cruise

To explore the Panama Canal region in a relaxed manner aboard an intimate motorized sailing yacht or small ship, check out Windstar Cruises' seven-night Costa Rica & Panama Canal itinerary. Bookable on more than a dozen dates from November 2024 through March 2026, the itinerary is offered aboard 148-passenger Wind Star or Wind Spirit (in 2024 and 2025) and 312-passenger Star Pride (in 2026). The ship will travel from Colon, Panama, to Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica (or vice versa), transiting the canal. Passengers can visit Panama City and Isla Parida in Panama, plus Golfo Dolce and Quepos (for Manuel Antonio National Park) in Costa Rica.

Who should go : Fans of small-ship cruising who enjoy a casual onboard ambience, are interested in nature and wildlife and wish to sample the regional flavors of Central America should consider a Windstar cruise . All accommodations on the sailing yachts are in snug yet well-designed staterooms with windows but no balconies. Wind Star and Wind Spirit are cozy and social four-deck ships, each featuring a pool and pool bar, a lounge and two restaurants. Star Pride is the better option for those who prefer a more spacious suitelike cabin with a balcony and a larger bathroom.

Seabourn's 34-night Caribbean Gems & Panama Canal cruise

celebrity cruise ultimate caribbean

For a one-way Panama Canal transit that visits 12 countries (St. Barts, Guadeloupe, Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis, the British Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic, Curacao, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Mexico) and offers 15 relaxing and luxurious days at sea, consider Seabourn 's 34-night Caribbean Gems & Panama Canal cruise. The 450-guest Seabourn Sojourn will sail from Miami to Los Angeles, departing in November 2025.

You'll enjoy beach time as you island hop in the Caribbean, while calls on Golfito and Puntarenas in Costa Rica offer access to eco-adventure. Visits to Puerto Quetzal in Guatemala and Puerto Chiapas and Huatulco in Mexico feature excursions focused on pre-Spanish-colonial culture, coffee cultivation and more, while a call on Cabo San Lucas offers whale watching, deep-sea fishing or tequila tasting opportunities.

Who should go : Work-from-anywhere entrepreneurs and retirees who enjoy the luxury and refinement of small-ship cruising will enjoy this monthlong Panama Canal transit. Seabourn Sojourn pampers its guests with attentive service, elevated cuisine and all-ocean-facing suites featuring walk-in closets and spacious marble bathrooms. Seabourn's all-inclusive cruise fares also cover gratuities and complimentary wines and spirits.

Princess Cruises' 12-night Panama Canal with Costa Rica & Caribbean cruise

While Princess Cruises does offer several longer ocean-to-ocean Panama Canal itineraries, its popular 12-night Panama Canal with Costa Rica & Caribbean cruises conveniently sail round trip from Fort Lauderdale on more than 20 dates in 2024, 2025 and 2026.

What's more, you can choose between two ships: the 3,140-guest Caribbean Princess or the 3,080-guest Emerald Princess. In addition to the partial transit, these sailings call on several Caribbean islands, including Aruba, Curacao, Jamaica and Grand Cayman, as well as Cartagena, Columbia; Limon, Costa Rica; and Colon, Panama.

Who should go : Couples who enjoy a ship with a more traditional vibe and families with kids who are content to participate in interactive learning activities and nature-based adventure (versus waterslides) will enjoy this cruise. Princess ships are known for their Movies Under the Stars screenings, multiple pools, specialty dining options, such as Sabatini's Italian Trattoria and The Salty Dog Gastropub, and Crooners piano bar.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 12-night South America: Peru, Colombia & Ecuador cruise

celebrity cruise ultimate caribbean

There's no "Panama Canal" in this itinerary's name, but Norwegian Cruise Line 's 12-night South America: Peru, Colombia & Ecuador cruise (Feb. 27-March 11, 2026) does a full canal transit as it sails from Miami to Lima, Peru. The 2,402-passenger Norwegian Jade will visit historic Santa Marta and Cartagena in Colombia; Panama City; Manta, Ecuador; and Trujillo and Lima in Peru.

Who should go : Couples and friends interested in experiencing not just a Panama Canal transit but some of the top coastal experiences along the Pacific coast of South America should choose this itinerary. Norwegian Jade is an older, smaller vessel that was refurbished in 2022 and features a top deck more conducive to sunning than thrill rides. The ship also has a surprising number of restaurants for its size: two main dining rooms, a buffet restaurant, a pub-style bar and grill, an Asian restaurant and an outdoor grill on a complimentary basis, plus six specialty dining venues (including a steakhouse and venues showcasing French, Italian and Japanese cuisines) for an added fee.

Oceania's 16-night Miami-to-Los Angeles cruise

Oceania Cruises ' 1,200-passenger Vista — which debuted in May 2023 as the first new-build ship in Oceania's fleet in more than a decade — will offer back-to-back, 16-night Miami-to-Los Angeles (Jan. 8-24, 2025) and Los Angeles-to-Miami (Jan. 24-Feb. 9, 2025) itineraries. Both sailings visit six countries with port calls that include George Town, Grand Cayman; Cartagena, Colombia; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; Corinto, Nicaragua; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; and Acapulco, Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada, Mexico. (The second sailing visits San Diego instead of Ensenada.)

Who should go : Oceania's newest ship offers a great compromise between a small and medium-size vessel and is ideal for those seeking a premium cruise experience with casual sophistication. Older couples especially will appreciate the ship's elegant cabin decor in soft hues of wheat and seagrass, mix of grand and intimate spaces and wide array of dining options. (Two new and noteworthy venues on Vista include Ember for inventive American cuisine and Aquamar Kitchen for wellness-focused breakfast, lunch and dinner.) A more immersive mixology program features curated cocktail menus, indulgent pairing experiences and specialty beverage carts.

Cunard's 26-night Southampton-to-San Francisco cruise

celebrity cruise ultimate caribbean

Cunard's brand-new 2,996-passenger ship Queen Anne, which debuts in May 2023, will make both its first transatlantic crossing and its first Panama Canal transit on this historic 26-night Southampton-to-San Francisco sailing (Jan. 9-Feb. 4, 2025). The ship will first cross the Atlantic and then overnight in New York before calling on Aruba, transiting the canal and visiting Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. It will conclude with an overnight in San Francisco.

The winter transatlantic crossing might not be right for everyone, but the second half of this voyage explores warm-weather destinations with plenty of relaxing sea days for sunning, reading, taking dance lessons and enjoying expert lectures.

Who should go : British cruise line Cunard appeals mainly to older travelers who savor the line's formal traditions. This cruise is for you if you enjoy afternoon tea, dressing up for dinner, gala evenings and dancing to big-band orchestras. This particular itinerary appeals to retirees who wish to visit several cruise regions in one sailing.

Viking's 180-day World Voyage

For the ultimate cruise indulgence, Viking's 180-day World Voyage I includes a Panama Canal transit (on Christmas Day, no less) as 930-passenger Viking Sky cruises from Fort Lauderdale to New York City (Dec. 19, 2024-June 17, 2025). This round-the-world cruise will visit 37 countries as guests enjoy Viking Sky's modern Scandinavian interior decor, soothing LivNordic Spa, two pools (including one with a retractable roof) and six onboard restaurants. Pricing includes airfare, gratuities and complimentary wine and beer with lunch and dinner.

If this longer voyage is sold out, consider the 138-day Viking World Cruise (departing Dec. 19, 2025), also on Viking Sky. This sailing, which travels from Fort Lauderdale to London (Greenwich), visits 28 countries and transits the Panama Canal on the eighth day.

Who should go : With cruise fares that start at $79,995 and $59,995 per person, respectively, these extended adventures at sea require a luxury budget. Viking 's base clientele is mostly retired or close-to-retirement-age professionals who enjoy the cruise line's focus on educational enrichment (via onboard lectures) and serene ambience (there's no casino, and the nighttime vibe is on the quiet side).

Royal Caribbean builds on its biggest edge over Carnival, Norwegian

R oyal Caribbean, Carnival, MSC Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, and Norwegian Cruise Line have bet big on the Caribbean. All of the major cruise lines have multiple ships sailing in that region due to passenger demand out of Florida.

The Caribbean isn't far from Miami, Port Canaveral, and Fort Lauderdale. That makes it easy for all the major cruise lines to have multiple ships calling on ports like Nassau, Cozumel, Roatan, Key West, and a handful of others.

Related: Royal Caribbean passengers face key price hikes

In addition, all of the cruise lines operate private islands. Those offerings vary quite a bit. Carnival Cruise Line ( CCL ) , MSC Cruises, and Disney Cruise Line offer islands that are basically just beaches. Norwegian's island requires passengers to travel from their cruise ship on a smaller tender boat, while the other cruise lines can dock at their islands.

Royal Caribbean, however, has changed the game when it comes to private islands. Its Perfect Day at CocoCay offers the traditional beach experience as well as a lot more. It has a free-to-use beach as well as multiple added-fee options. Those include a Beach Club with a fancier lunch and its own pool, a water park, and a new adults-only area, Hideaway Beach, with a heated pool.

CocoCay has been Royal Caribbean's most popular destination and the cruise line plans to build on that model.

Royal Caribbean doubles down

Perfect Day at CocoCay is Royal Caribbean's ( RCL ) most popular destination. That makes sense because it offers a quiet beach day for passengers who want that while adding the free pool, the largest in the Caribbean, as well as the added-fee experiences.

Royal Caribbean calls on CocoCay as often as it possible can with two ships docking in port each day. All of its 3 and 4-day sailings stop at the private island as does Icon of the Seas, the largest ship in the world, and its upcoming Utopia of the Seas.

The company has even been adding CocoCay stops for select sailings of its Celebrity Cruises ships, and it's expanding the Perfect Day model beyond CocoCay.

Cruise passengers like CocoCay because it' offers choices, but it's also safe, free of pushy vendors, and does not require spending any money (although you certainly can if you want to). That's a stark contrast to visiting Nassau and Cozumel, two ports that many of the same ships call on, which Carnival, MSC, Disney, and Norwegian also stop at.

Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter to save money on your next cruise.

Many passengers, across all the cruise lines, opt to stay on the ship in certain ports with Nassau and Cozumel at the top of the list. Frequent cruisers have called on those ports many times and few passengers see either stop as one to get excited about.

Royal Caribbean has a plan to fix that.

Royal Caribbean building more private destinations

Carnival, it should be noted, is following Royal Caribbean's model by building its own version of CocoCay in Freeport. Celebration Key will offer pools, a water park, as well as beaches.

Royal Caribbean, however, has plans for what it's calling "Beach Clubs" in both Nassau and Cozumel. The Nassau Club has been public knowledge for a while, but the Cozumel news was only recently shared.

CEO Jason Liberty talked about his company's plans for the private destinations during the cruise line's first-quarter earnings call .

"The newest addition to our growing portfolio of private destinations is the Royal Beach Club in Cozumel, Mexico, that is set to welcome guests in 2026. With a combination of activities for every type of vacationer, Royal Beach Club Cozumel will further enhance our guests' experience, giving guests the ultimate beach day," he said.

Royal Caribbean has not shared pricing for its beach clubs, but they will be an added-fee option, not an included one like the core CocoCay experience. Liberty also shared some news on the Nassau project.

"Earlier this week, we also celebrated another important milestone when we officially broke ground on Royal Beach Club Paradise Island in Nassau, which is scheduled to open next year," he added.
