The Ultimate Bali trip budget guide

Bali trip budget

Let’s all be honest - traveling to Bali is an absolute dream.

When I crafted my 3 month Southeast Asia itinerary , I did the typical loop that most backpackers do, but after a year of HARD work in Korea, I wanted to kick my trip off by blissing out in Bali - the island of the gods.

Bali is an extremely popular holiday destination, and because of the rise of tourists, has adapted by incorporating high-end party venues and beach clubs, epic hotels, and Michelin star restaurants - which can make a Bali trip seem super unattainable to those who travel on a tight budget.

I - someone who just quit their job and had 2.5 months of travel to complete even after their 3 weeks in Bali - definitely could not afford to (and excuse the horrific pun) ball out in Bali. I’ve only ever seen Bali done for boujee bachelorette parties or for honeymoons, and I was mildly fearful for the lifespan of my bank account.

Ever up for a challenge, however, I set my Bali trip budget to a mildly terrifying 35 dollars a day.

Spoiler alert, I failed.

Not by much though! In the end it worked out to about 40 dollars a day, which I would say is a success. I spent $850 dollars over the course of 3 weeks in Bali, which is FAR less than it takes to live in the United states. Bali doesn’t have to be some out-of-reach, once-in-a-lifetime destination. If you’re committed, you can have an epic Bali trip on a budget.

Let me show you exactly how I did it.

*** Disclaimer: I was a solo female traveler backpacking through Bali, and this Bali trip budget guide will reflect that! If you’re traveling with a family, or don’t necessarily want to “rough it” like I sometimes did, you will end up spending a little bit more.

I just want to show you that Bali is accessible, even if you’re a backpacker. Plus, the magic of Bali isn’t found in clubs or expensive hotels - it’s in the island itself.

(Don’t worry. I still went to clubs and took pictures on the edge of infinity pools overlooking rice paddies. Obviously. Even if we’re doing Bali on a budget, we’re still doing BALI. Duh.) ***

How to get to Bali.

As much as I would like to say that the 40 dollars a day that I spent included airfare, but alas. Not even I can finesse the budget that much.

As I was already living in Asia at the time, my flight to Bali was much less expensive that flying from somewhere like the states, which definitely helped. If you don’t have that luxury, be sure to get the Hopper app.

Unfortunately I am not sponsored by them. I just genuinely love them (But @ Hopper if you’re listening… hit a girl up.)

I used to swear by Skyscanner to find cheap flights, but I am a Hopper convert. You can type in your destination and immediately see which days of each month are green (cheap), yellow (mid-range) and red (expensive). You can then set the app to notify you when the prices drop, and whether or not they predict the prices being lower in the future.

They even let you know when the price is the lowest they’ve seen, and tell you to book before the prices go back up. Mind. Blown.

Totally not related but I set a price watch for a flight from D.C. to Capetown and one day it dropped from $621 to $210. That’s a massive flight, too. Like ???? I’m obsessed with this app. I wish I was sponsored. This is your best bet for finding cheap flights to Bali.

Upon arrival, you’ll need to pay for a Visa - which is $50 USD.

Now you’re in Bali - and the real budget magic begins.

Transportation.

Bali trip budget

A huge cost of traveling is, well, traveling. Once you get to Bali, you can obviously choose to remain in one or two locations, but if you’re really trying to see all that Bali has to offer, you’re going to have quite a few travel expenses. Think taxis to and from the airport, traveling to the beach or temples, driving to remote waterfalls, and taking ferries to un-missable places like the Gili Islands and Nusa Penida. It can add up! Especially if you’re a solo traveler and don’t have anyone to split expenses with.

Here are my top tips for saving money on transportation during your trip to Bali.

The first non-negotiable is to download the Grab app. It’s like Uber, but much less expensive. a ten minute ride literally costs 2 dollars. Absolute STEAL.

I know it can seem intimidating at first, but if it’s just you or you and one other person, the Grab motorbike option is going to be your best bet. I was super nervous about ordering one for the first time, but the journey from the airport to my hostel in Uluwatu was around an hour - and the cost of ordering a car for just myself was going to be 5x the price of a motorbike.

I had my big 46 liter backpack with me as well as a daypack and a fannypack, and was very worried that a motorbike wasn’t an option for me. After observing a few people around me pass their backpack to the driver to put in between their handlebars and hop on the back, I decided to give it a go.

It was seamless. I quickly realized that there are handlebars under the back of the seat, so no need to hold on to the driver (awkard, amiright?).

The motorbike option is the best, even if you just need a ride to the temple. Something about being on the back of a motorbike as you sail through the roads of Bali? I’d choose that option even if it wasn’t the cheapest.

Another great option is to carpool with fellow travelers you meet in hostels. Especially if you’re a solo traveler and staying in hostels, it’s SO easy to find someone going the same way as you. Even if you have to switch your itinerary around if they’re planning on leaving earlier or later than you, it’s worth it if you can snag a car if it’s raining or if it’s a particularly long journey. I did this probably three times, and being able to split the cost was a lifesaver.

Don’t be afraid to ask around!

Bali trip budget

If your day revolves around lots of driving, consider renting a motorbike if the total daily cost of taxis would exceed the price of renting. The traffic and the roads in Bali are slightly horrific, but if you’ve driven a motorbike before or are comfortable giving it a go, that’s definitely a way to cut costs as well.

Another option that is definitely more catered to solo travelers but still worth a mention is to hop on the back of other traveler’s rented motorbikes. Lots of people rent motorbikes for months on end to save money, but since I was only there for three weeks and didn’t know how to drive a motorbike, I made friends and mooched off of them.

Not even sorry about it.

Shoutout Nat, who literally chauffeured me all over Uluwatu and Canggu. I paid him in gas and temple entry tickets to make up for the mooching so I really don’t feel bad at all.

Ferries are where unfortunately there aren’t too many budget work-arounds - and although I looked HARD for an alternative, I did shell out probably 60 dollars for three separate ferries, which definitely jacked my grand total up quite a bit.

My grand total that I spend on transportation for three weeks in Bali was *drum-roll please* $139.42! Not too shabby.

Accommodation

Bali trip budget

***This is where I might lose some folks.

I know that people dream of staying in gorgeous villas with infinity pools and epic views on their Bali trip, but staying in resorts is a surefire way to blow the budget.

When it came to accommodation, I cut corners where I could. I only stayed in a big fancy villa if I had a group of friends to split the cost with, and I typically stayed in the cheapest rooms a hostel had to offer.

If you’ve read my How to Make Friends While Traveling Solo post, you’ll already know that for me, cheap hostel dorm rooms are a blessing in disguise. They can range from 8-12 dollars a night (absolute STEAL), you make loads of friends, and if you’re out making the most of your time in Bali, you won’t be spending that much time in the room regardless.

Besides, the hostels in Bali are stunning most of the time anyways.

If it’s just you and one other friend, consider splitting a private room in the hostel! The price per person is comparable to a dorm bed, except it will feel a little closer to a hotel.

Full disclosure: I had three nights where some friends that I met splurged on a villa and refused to split the bill - so my total is slightly lower than if I had paid those three extra days. Obviously super grateful for the generosity, but maybe take what I spent and bump it up my 40 ish dollars to give you a realistic budget.

Find the best hostels in Bali here!

Bali trip budget

My grand total of what I spent on accommodation for three weeks in Bali was $165.98!

See what I mean guys? Bali doesn’t have to be some unattainable, rich person holiday destination. If you go in with a plan, you can execute an epic Bali trip on a budget.

Food was where I went a little off the rails. Something about those aesthetic Bali brunches?? Can’t get enough. Can’t stay away.

One thing that shocked me about the brunches, however, was that a latte typically rivaled the cost of your main dish. So maybe try to stick to water if you’re hardcore budgeting?

Additionally, you could try to choose to stay at a hostel that has free breakfast. I stayed at a few, and never really took them up on the offer, which definitely could’ve saved me a decent amount of money.

Bali trip budget

Sticking to hostel breakkies or not drinking coffee is easier said than done, I know! I myself was more than happy to splurge a little bit on stunning smoothie bowls, vegan cinnamon rolls, and a nice, strong latte. Since I was traveling by myself, I would frequently go on an adventure to find a new brunch place and use my brunch time to plan the rest of my day.

Zero regrets on spending too much on food while traveling through Bali.

To stay close to my budget, however, I tried to balance this out by eating at the local warungs for lunch and dinner - you can get fried rice or fried noodles (Nasi Goreng and Mie Goreng) for 2-3 dollars! Traditional Indonesian food is GAS so I never felt like I was missing out on all the boujee restaurants that sell overpriced western food.

Where to stay in Bali

Bali trip budget

All in all, I spent $245.48 on food over the course of three weeks in Bali. How this got higher than my literal cost of accommodation, I have not one single idea. I blame overpriced lattes and me going to eat whenever I got bored or it was raining. Idk.

But like - from these pictures you can tell that I ate like an empress. two hundred and fifty dollars VERY well spent.

Activities can really make or break the budget; there are so many things to do in Bali! Unfortunately, you have to be a little picky when it comes to how you spend your money.

Luckily, most things in Bali are super cheap, so you can still do a lot, even on a shoestring budget. I spent $225.73 on activities, and I got so much out of that.

I got an hour long Balinese massage probably twice a week, paid for the entry fees for waterfalls and temples, bought a few drinks at some pool clubs (this is where you can get those epic infinity pool/rice terrace insta photos - no need to splurge on a villa when there are public pool clubs!), two snorkeling trips, and a hike up a volcano.

Book Bali activities here!

Bali trip budget

Some places in Bali, you need to pay for local guides or a photo fee, so this includes that as well.

Once again, in the spirit of full transparency, I did have a friend offer to foot the bill on our private driver who took us all over the island of Nusa Penida, but that would’ve added about $25 dollars to this budget.

I think a budget of $300 could give you the opportunity to do everything you dreamed of Bali and more, which is extremely do-able.

***One thing to note! I am not a big partier. I know people who spent more than my entire Bali trip budget in just one weekend because they were buying tables and shots and bottle service at expensive, boujee beach clubs.

While this is super fun and what some people want their Bali holiday to look like, just know that although lots of things in Bali are dirt cheap, alcohol is not one of them.

Bali trip budget

I still went out quite a bit, don’t get me wrong. I would buy a drink and just enjoy the vibes! To me, there’s nothing worse than being hungover while you’re trying to see everything a country has to offer anyways. If I had chosen to party more, my budget definitely would’ve been done for in 2 seconds flat.

If that’s something that’s a priority to you, adjust it for the normal price of drinks in the rest of the world! Just know that cutting that out will save you LOADS.

(And ladies - the people blowing thousands on a night out are always game to buy you a drink👀 )

Bali Trip Budget Grand Total

The grand total of what I spent over the course of 3 weeks in Bali was $816 flat.

Bali trip budget

I posted this number over on my Instagram a little while ago, and *wait for it* got my very first HATE comment. I felt like I had cracked the budget travel code and was shocked by the negative response online. I just wanted to address it here in case any of you are thinking similar thoughts!

This person commented on my reel asking how many times I got assaulted and drugged from staying in hostels and traveling on such a tight budget - which was highly offensive. I think it’s so crazy that it’s IMBEDDED in so many of our minds that travel is expensive and out-of-reach, and budget options = giving up your safety.

Even in the hostels I stayed in that cost $4 dollars per night, I never felt unsafe in Bali or anywhere else in southeast Asia. The hostels I stayed in were amazing, the people were incredible, and all of the numbers I’m giving you are 100% real - I tracked every penny in a very extra excel spreadsheet. The numbers are from September of 2022. I stayed perfectly safe the whole time I was there.

Bali trip budget

If I can do nearly a month in Bali for significantly less than what most people pay in rent, then you can too! When there’s a will, there’s a way. Never let your small budget or your idea of what travel to a particular country ~should~ look like prevent you from going and experiencing it for yourself.

Make that Bali trip happen! I hope this post shows you that you CAN afford to travel and that you shouldn’t let your preconceived notions stop you from booking those flights.

Bali Budget per Day – How much does a 13-Days Bali Vacation cost?

Updated: September 8, 2022

written by: Steph Kloeckener

Bali is a dream destination. This guide will show you how to explore Bali on a Budget.

Visiting Bali is a must if you want to see all that Asia has to offer. And while the island is not the cheapest destination, it is possible to explore Bali on a budget even if you want to stay in amazing accommodations. This Bali trip budget will tell you what your Bali budget per day will be like so you can plan an epic trip during which you can observe amazing sunsets at the beach, chase waterfalls, and explore temples.

Just like my budget guides about Vietnam and Sri Lanka , this Bali budget guide gives a general estimate of the costs based on my own spendings as well as some tips and recommendations. I wrote down every rupiah I spend because I might be a little freaky as I love knowing how much I spend while traveling.

The prices in this guide of Bali vacation costs are in Indonesian Rupiah and in Euro. The exchange rate as of September 2022 is as follows: 100.000 IDR is 6.70 EUR, 6.70 USD, 5.81 GBR, or 9.92 AUD.

Accommodation: 1.005K IDR / 64,68€

Your daily budget in Bali can be relatively small even if you decide to stay in more luxurious accommodations. However, those places right or near the beach tend to be a lot more expensive. So just look for a place a little bit further away from the ocean if you plan to rent a scooter while in Bali.

Just like in Bangkok, I decided to stay in hostels that allowed me to have my own personal space. Both hostels I stayed in were amazing with their capsule-style rooms and amenities, so I can only recommend them to you.

The hostel I stayed in while in Canggu was Kultur Umalas and the one in Ubud was G ypsy Lust Hostel . They are my favorite shared accommodations and I would stay there again if I want to explore Bali on a budget and if I want to meet fellow travelers.

Explore Gili T

Hostel Room

Canggu: 73,5K IDR – 85K IDR

Ubud: 110 IDR

Private Villa on Gili T

The night on Gili T is not listed as the accommodation was included in the costs of my Gili trip.

But if you do not mind splurging while there, I can only recommend the Kelapa Villas to you. The prices range from 1.410.000 IDR for a 1-bedroom villa to 7.740.000 IDR for a 7-bedroom villa.

Food & Drinks: 1.624K IDR / 104,52€

While exploring Bali I ate both local food and at those trendy instagrammable places. And my food budget admittedly was the largest part of my daily budget in Bali.

Cheapest Meal: 65K IDR

Most Expensive Meal: 175K IDR

Average Cost per Day: 125K IDR

Daily Budget in Bali: Food Prices

Bali Buda 128K

Kynd Community 175K

The local food is amazing and you will want to eat a lot of it. It is cheaper and perfect if you travel to Bali on a budget. But if you also want to see the expat side of Bali, you should check out other restaurants. There are several amazing international restaurants in Canggu and Ubud.

Transport: 525K IDR / 33,79€

Airport transport: 230k idr.

Upon arrival, I did not get a sim card right away and therefore I had to rely on the airport wifi to order my transport to Canggu. But the drivers kept canceling the trips as I never got their messages and was therefore unable to answer in any way. Eventually, I just thought ‘damn it’ and took a taxi that was way too expensive. The way back to the airport was the exact same route and it only cost me 53% of the price I paid upon my arrival in Bali.

So if you want to save money, I can only recommend getting a sim card at the airport. Just ensure that you get a tariff plan that works everywhere in Indonesia and that you can easily recharge.

Grab 525K IDR

Getting around in Canggu: 65K IDR

Canggu – Ubud Return Trip (0.5x): 460K IDR

Try to find someone that is willing to share a Grab with you if you decide to take one between Canggu and Ubud.

Scooter: 400K IDR / 25,74€

During my two weeks in Bali, I rented a scooter on 5 different days. Hereby, the price for a good and reliable scooter is usually between 60K and 70K a day and will therefore only be a small part of your daily budget in Bali. I saw offers for less, but from what I saw, those scooters did not look as safe. If you rent a scooter for less, you should check if the scooter is in a good condition and take pictures from all angles to avoid any potential issues and scams.

Scooter Rental: 340K IDR

Fuel: 50K IDR

Parking: 10K IDR

If you plan to stay in Bali for more than 14 days, it might be cheaper to rent a scooter for an entire month. Enquire about the price before you rent it and ask if you can potentially switch to a monthly rental plan after trying out the scooter for a day or two. That way you can be sure that the scooter is okay.

Traveling Bali on a Budget

If you know how to ride a scooter and do not mind driving on the left side of the road, a scooter is the best way to explore Bali. On some days I drove more than 100km and it was perfect. Using a scooter allowed me whenever I wanted to enjoy the view and to explore the picturesque rice fields .

Just keep in mind that no insurance will cover you if you do not have the correct motorbike license. A simple 45CC one will no suffice in Bali as all scooters have more power.

You can pay ‘a fine’ if the police stop you, but the moment you crash, you are screwed. Whether you decide to do so is up to you, but I wanted to give you all the important facts. Please be careful and have fun exploring Bali!

Entrance Fees: 250K IDR / 16,09€

Bali has many temples and waterfalls and visiting most of them costs a small fee.

AUS9493 edit

Monkey Forest: 80K IDR

Tirta Empul Temple: 50K IDR

Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfalls : 30K IDR

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple: 50K IDR

Tirta Gangga Temple: 40K IDR

Bali Budget for Activities: 1.000.000 IDR / 64,36€

Gili t trip.

I booked a trip to Gili T and spend two days there. As it was a special photographer trip, I cannot recommend a specific company in case you want to book the trip as a package. However, the price of the transport to the ferry port, the ferry rides, and accommodation on Gili T should cost approximately the same. You can b ook the ferry ride to the Gili Islands on 12GoAsia. Alternatively, you can book it at the departure location, but the ferry can be full so it is best to buy your ride in advance.

Alternatively, you can book a group trip to Gili T. Hereby, you can choose between a day trip full of snorkeling or multi-day trips.

My Bali Trip Budget Recommendation:

If you do not mind splurging for a night and want a bit of luxury, the Gili Islands are perfect. There are many private villas with pools and everything for fair prices. The experience is worth it. The Gili Islands are a paradise.

Gili T

Sim Card: 180K / 11,58€

I ended up getting a rather large amount of data that is valid in all of Indonesia. Tell the salesperson what your plans are and they will recommend the best data plan. Keep in mind, that many phone tariffs are regional and that your Bali data plan might not be valid if you plan to visit the Gili Islands and Lombok.

It is a lot cheaper to get a local plan upon arrival than to buy a worldwide plan with your usual provider.

Additional Bali vacation costs

Washing: 59k idr / 11,58€, souvenirs & shopping: 405k idr / 26,06€.

Bali offers many amazing souvenirs and handmade things, so just add a certain amount of money to your Bali budget when you plan your Bali vacation cost. You are bound to find something that you will want to buy, so also consider leaving some space in your suitcase or backpack when traveling there.

For the number of money listed, I got three bracelets, two magnets, five sarongs, a bowl made of coconut, and fish food at Tirta Gangga.

Spendings that are not a part of my Bali trip budget

Pharmacy costs.

I decided not to include these costs in my Bali travel budget, as I hope that you will not be as dumb as I was. I managed to get a ‘Bali Kiss’ when I burned myself on a motorbike’s exhaust. And let me tell you, that getting what I needed at the pharmacy was not cheap when compared to other prices in Indonesia. However, the service I received at two different pharmacies was amazing.

Pharmacy #1: Gaze and tape – 161K IDR

Pharmacy #2: Gaze, disinfectant, and two waterproof bandaids – 102,3K IDR

Do yourself a favor and be careful when you get off a motorbike. And bring basic first aid utensils when visiting Bali.

My Bali budget per day

Daily Budget in Bali: 419K IDR / 26,97€

Bali Vacation Cost (13 days): 5.448.000 IDR / 350,62€

Being a solo budget traveler, this guide is really helpful as I am planning to visit Bali in the near future. Very well written.

It sounds like you made the most of your money and had an amazing adventure in Bali!

p.s. It’s pretty interesting that food and drink cost almost double what you paid for accommodation. It always seems to be the other way around when we travel here in Canada!

I really do not know why that’s the case, but the food > accommodation situation was my general experience in Asia. The food was always cheap by international standards, but still my highest expense

I keep track of my expenses just like you do – gives me great satisfaction somehow! Your guide was quite useful to gauge how much to budget – I want to visit Bali soon now! Tough about you getting burnt – hope it didn’t affect your trip much.

wohoo! I’m not the only expense tracker around here. Glad to hear that this guide is useful for you. 🙂 I’m a diver (that really wanted to dive) & wasn’t allowed to enter the ocean after the burn. Let’s just say it was not the highlight of my trip

This is a great and helpful post for those budget travelers. The plane tickets alone can be costly the best way to do it is to do backpacking around the neighboring country at once to make use of your big $$$ plane ticket.

The daily costs are low, which is good, but getting there and flying back will be a big expense, especially for someone like me who comes from the US.

Can’t wait to visit Bali! It’s definitely on my bucket list

Wow you managed to stick to a great budget without missing out on yummy food and amazing adventures! Bali is one of the cheapest places we have visited. We pre-booked a taxi from the airport which is another way to not pay too much at the airport 🙂

While Bali was still cheap by international standards, it was the most expensive place I’ve been to in Asia. Haha

I should have done the same, or gotten that wicked sim card right away. I absolutely overestimated how good the wifi connection at the airport would be. Oops

Costs when Traveling on a Budget & Backpacking

Accommodation prices – traveling on a budget & backpacking in bali (average usd 10-25 per night).

For as little as US$10-15 you may get a room at a guest house, homestay, Losmen, or tiny hotel with no stars. It is possible to find even cheaper lodgings with bunk beds. If you’d like a private room with a bathroom and air conditioning, though, you may locate a good hotel for less than US$20 a night. Young  backpackers and budget travelers still flock to Bali, and they tend to head to the southern areas (Kuta, Bukit, and Canggu) and in the east (Padangbai) because of the abundance of cheap hotels and eateries there.

In general, a backpacker should be able to get by for  USD$35 a day , which covers bare-bones lodging, three meals at US$3 each, and a few drinks. You may rent a scooter for around US$4 per day. However, the cost of alcoholic beverages and social gatherings would quickly deplete any such funds.

Don’t expect to be able to rent a villa for these prices.

Rooms are usually priced per room and not per person, unless you choose a dorm or bunk-bed.

Food & Drinks Budget & Backpacking (Average USD 1-3 per meal)

All across Bali, you’ll find traditional warungs (small eateries), ocal restaurants, often displaying the food where you can choose a selection of different meat, fish and vegetable dishes. It’s good, and it’s also very fresh.

The street food carts (kaki lima) are serving amazing food. such as the famous Soto, meat ball soup, Nasi Goreng,, Martabak, Fried Fish, and of course Sate.

The sanitation standards might not be always “up to par”. But in general one can say, that food is fresh, particularly if you choose vendors that you see are busy. It’s simple to see whether the food, is up to your standards since they’re all out in the open.

This is also where the majority of the locals go to eat during their lunch periods and after work. All Indonesians, including the Balinese, have an insatiable appetite. They like spending time together eating at nice restaurants.

You can get a softdrink at these places for USD 0.6 to 1. Fresh coconot should be USD 1 to 1.5.

Costs when Traveling on a “mid-range” budget

Mid-range accommodation prices – (average usd 30-60 per night per room).

The vast majority of Bali’s hotels are moderately priced 3-star establishments . Traditionally, these hotels have been on the smaller side and run by families. Meanwhile, up to 100-room hotels from major chains like Swissbel and Accor and local brands like Grandmas and Aston are entering the market. As more domestic and Chinese visitors come, these businesses will thrive and expand.

These hotels have been thoroughly inspected for cleanliness and comfort, and they often provide a good breakfast at a low price. Most of them are located somewhat farther from the shore, making the use of a scooter or a lengthy walk to the beach necessary.

Depending on the location, you might get a small private villa for that price, particularly if you share a 2 or 3 bedroom villa with more people. The paying 40-60USD per room is enough to get a nice place already.

Mid-Range (Average USD 3-7 per meal)

In this category, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of eateries across Bali. The majority of visitors as well as an increasing number of middle class Balinese eat there. These locations might also even be locally run”warung” but a little bit more geared to serve also foreigners and cost a little bit more, than the warung, that are mostly frequented by the local population.

But there are plenty of restaurants that offer you a decent meal at that price level,

Middle-range restaurants may be slightly more costly in tourist hot spots such as Canggu and Seminyak for example. Additionally, the costs in the hotel’s restaurants are generally 50–100% higher than stand-alone restaurants in the neighborhood.

Costs for Affordable Luxury Traveling in Bali

Accommodation cost – affordable luxury (average usd 70-150 per night).

Depending on the location and proximity to the beach, this category ranges from three up to even five stars. Since also these hotels often provide different room categories, you could get very different experiences and pay different prices in the same hotel. This segment is often booked by families and individual travelers (single, couples and groups) who have grown out of their backpacker phase.

Expect well-appointed rooms, at least one restaurant, pool, nice gardens, good location, excellent service, tasty breakfast, and spacious rooms.

At that price range, when you travel with 4 or more people, you can get already very nice serviced villas & vacation rentals with private pools.

Affordable Luxury in restaurants (Average USD 10–25 per meal)

Numerous restaurants in this category are found in 4 to even 5 star resorts and hotels. They mostly serve also cocktails and have a more extensive wine lists.

Imported Alcohol is generally quite expensive because of import taxes. But a decent glass of French or Italian wine might cost you USD 6 – 10.

Costs for Luxury & Ultra Luxury Traveling in Bali

Accommodation cost: luxury & high-end (average usd 150-350 per night – the sky is the limit in certain ultra luxury and villa resorts).

One of a kind, unmatched excellence. When compared to other popular tourist destinations, Bali’s luxury offerings are surprisingly affordable. It’s no exaggeration to say that Bali is home to some of the top hotels in Asia, if not the world. The island’s warm friendliness permeates every aspect of the service, and the island’s artistic and cultural traditions inform the design of the accommodations.

Bali is home to facilities from some of the most prestigious hotel groups in the world, and these establishments do not disappoint in terms of beauty or quality. Balinese and regional firms have built and overseen a number of world-class hotels and resorts.

More helpful information and price ranges to plan your Bali Holiday

Cost of drinks & alcohol in bali.

Water and soft drinks are inexpensive. Beer and juices are acceptable. Wine and liquor may be rather pricey (due to local taxes). Green juices and smoothies are becoming a little more pricey. Soft drink costs at regular restaurants aren’t all that much more than they are in convenience stores. However, many hotels with stars still mark up significantly. In a convenience store, a 1.5-liter bottle of water will run you about 50 cents.

Generally speaking, imported beers are always much more expensive than  domestic beers  like Corona or San Miguel beer versus Bintang beer.

Average price at a bar or restaurant, *excluding hotels:

  • Soft Drinks such as coke, sprite (Average US75¢-$1 per bottle)
  • Beer (Average US$2-4 per bottle)
  • Local wine (Average US$3-5 per glass)
  • Imported wine (Average US$5-10 per glass)
  • Cocktails (Average US$5-10 per glass)
  • Spirits (Average US$4-10 per glass)
  • Expensive Imported Whiskeys, Tequilas, Vodkas, Cognacs etc can cost up to USD 30 per drink

Transportation Cost in Bali

Depending on where you stay and how far you need to travel to get to the beach, shops or restaurants, the transportation costs per day can, of course, vary quite a bit. Choosing the location for your accommodation and therefore the method of transportation should be your main concern when planning your holiday since Bali is not very “pedestrian-friendly” due to lack of sidewalks, the heat and far distances.

Bicycle Rental (Average US$2-4 per day)

Not very common but a good way to get around in Ubud, Canggu and the more remote areas

Scooter/ Motorbikes Rental (Average US$ 5-7 per day)

Rent a scooter including helmet per day. Countless rental places all over Bali. Usually, without any insurance!

Premium and properly serviced Scooters/ Motorbikes (Average US$ 10-25 per day)

Special scooter with a bigger seat and large compartment to keep your belongings safe. Lexi, NMax, PCX, or Vespa with insurance, well maintained with drop and pick-up service to your hotel.

Best and most reliable Scooter Rental Service in Bali

Scooter Taxi/ Ojek (Average US$ 3-5/ trip) ( not via apps)

Managed by the local community, these guys hang around mostly during evenings and night near the pubs and clubs since many areas ban the app-driven transportation services like Go-Jek, Grab, Uber, etc. You can recognize them wearing a west with a number on it (some of them don’t). You would have to bargain with them, but they usually charge something between per trip if it’s not too far.

App driven scooter taxis (Average US$1-3 per trip)  are significantly cheaper. Most visitors use those services twice a day

APPS: GOJEK & GRAB

Hiring a car with driver half and full day (Average US$20-60)

It is the most convenient way if you wish to explore the island and go for day trips. 8-10 hours rental, including gasoline and driver, will cost you anything between US$40-60, depending on the condition of the car. The driver is registered, pays insurance and taxes etc.

Rent your Car with Driver here online

Taxi cars (Average ca. US$5-10 per trip, 20-30 minutes)

The cars that are managed by the local communities (you can’t miss them, since they continuously say “transport, transport”) charge roughly twice what the standard taxi and app-driven services would charge. Bluebird, Grabcar, Go-car (from Go-Jek app) are not expensive. An average trip from Seminyak to Kuta would cost you roughly USD seven if you use those taxi services.

Good to know when renting a hotel room in Bali

Usually in Bali, you pay for the hotel room and not per person. Single rooms rarely exist. Therefore traveling as a couple costs almost as much as traveling solo, excluding the breakfast of course. Expect to pay during mid and low season 30%-50% less for rooms and villas than during high season (Easter Holidays, July until mid September, Christmas and New Years, Chinese New Years and end of Ramadan – Idul Fitri).

One of the most important determinants of hotel and resort prices is location. In Bali, it is common for businesses (particularly accommodation and restaurants) to add up to 22% (11% VAT and 5-11% service charge) to the bill. Because wages in Indonesia are relatively low, service charges are usually distributed equally among staff members. Make sue the hotel and villas quote you the price including all extra fees.

Costs for Private Villas in Bali

In Bali, the private villa market has expanded dramatically in the last five years. Hundreds of properties have appeared on the market; some are run professionally, while others are not. These properties come in all sizes and shapes, and the most important factor is location.

The main difference between staying in a hotel and staying in a villa is that you can get villas with up to 8 bedrooms, which is sometimes like renting your own small hotel with staff. If you are traveling in a group or with a family, renting a luxury villa is often less expensive per room per night than renting a few hotel rooms, making this segment appealing if you are traveling with friends or family.

Private villas are difficult to categorize, but you might be surprised at how affordable a luxurious holiday can be. Those properties are almost never near the beach or restaurants, requiring some form of transportation. However, there are many well-located villas in Seminyak, Kerobokan, and Canggu.

Some villas have a minimum stay, especially during peak season, and websites like Airbnb charge a cleaning or booking fee. Several villa management companies offer villas, but you can also find those properties on OTAs such as booking.com, airbnb.com, and so on.

Average Prices for Villas:

A private one-bedroom villa with a small pool starts at US$100-150. While true luxury is likely to start around US$200 per night – per room available.

These villas are fully serviced and equipped with all amenities. The more luxurious ones include a chef and a team to look after you during the day. The more rooms a villa has, the less it costs per night per room. We recommend that you look through the listings and get inspired.

The most luxurious, with 6-8 bedrooms, can cost up to USD3,000-4,000 per night. But then you get a gym, a game room, incredible pool, amazing food, and possibly even a private tennis court, as well as your own chauffeur and car.

As everywhere else in the world…this depends 😉

The bigger villas (four to seven bedrooms) are often rented out for weddings. Bali is a popular destination for weddings, and there are a number of organizers that can handle all the details so that the newlyweds and their guests may have the perfect ceremony and reception.

How much does a trip to Bali cost?

Faraway Worlds

Faraway Worlds

  • Bali travel budget

If you’re planning on travelling to Bali, you’re probably wondering how much you need to budget for your trip. While your travel costs will depend on your travel style, generally speaking Bali is perfect for a budget trip.

Accommodation costs are generally affordable and food and drinks are very cheap. Many of Bali’s best attractions are very affordable or even free and, while some activities could set you back a fair amount, there’s plenty to do at lower price points too.

How much should I budget for a trip to Bali?

A reasonable budget for two for a week in Bali is around IDR 17,013,376 .

The above cost is based on staying in good, mid-range accommodation and having a few meals out per week, while preparing some yourself . It makes allowances for a couple of sightseeing activities, but doesn’t take into account expensive activities like adventure sports or private tours.

Generally speaking, the longer you travel, the cheaper it costs per day, while fly-in, fly-out trips can be more expensive.

How much does accommodation cost?

You can expect to spend between IDR 910,000-IDR 1,800,000 a night, per couple, on accommodation in Bali. This will get you a private room with your own bathroom in a 3-4-star hotel or apartment rental.

Hostels are, of course, cheaper, but a private room with a shared bathroom will still cost around IDR 400,000 per night. A bed in a dorm room also averages around IDR 150,000 per night, per person, although there are definitely cheaper options out there.

Accommodation prices in Bali are rising again as the tourism industry recovers, however you may still be able to find some good deals at the moment. While accommodation in Bali isn't as cheap as some Asian countries, the value is generally very good and you can have a five-star experience on a mid-range budget. There are also many luxury options that are can reach far beyond the above prices.

Read our guide on where to stay in Bali to find the best place to base yourself during your visit.

How much should I budget for food and drinks in Bali?

Budget to spend around IDR 4,411,400 for two for a week in Bali. This assumes you’re cooking some of the time and drinking some alcohol.

If you enjoy eating out, you can expect to pay around IDR 643,000 for a nice dinner for two, including an alcoholic drink. A meal at a pub is likely to be around IDR 220,000 for two, with cheaper meals available (especially for lunch) for around IDR 57,000 each.

Assuming that you’ll be eating out some of the time, budget at least IDR 76,600 a week for groceries. If you enjoy a few drinks, you’ll need to increase this amount – beer costs around IDR 28,000 for a 500ml bottle and good bottle of wine is around IDR 326,000 , from a shop, although there are cheaper options available. Milk typically costs around IDR 23,000 for a two-litre bottle and you can expect to pay around IDR 38,600 for a cappuccino from a local café.

How much does it cost to get around Bali?

Getting around Bali is easiest with a scooter. Transport costs fluctuate depending how much you travel, but budgeting around IDR 793,000 for two per week is a good starting point. This should allow you to hire a couple of scooters. If you’re planning on doing any tours or using hop-on hop-off buses, you’ll need to up your budget a bit.

Taking taxis or hiring a driver with a car are also good options for getting around Bali, particularly if you don't want to deal with the chaotic traffic or are travelling in a larger group.

What should I expect to spend on activities?

A lot of the best things to do in Bali are free. However, there definitely are some attractions that cost money – entry fees to a museum or an art gallery are usually around IDR 144,000 - IDR 573,000 per person. If you want to do organised day trips or join smaller tour groups to learn more about some of the sites, budget around IDR 1,100,000 per activity per person.

Here are some prices for popular activities and day trips in Bali:

Mount Batur sunrise trek - USD 50

Private day trip to Ubud Monkey Forest, the rice terraces and Tanah Lot - USD 50

Tour to watch the sunset at Uluwatu Temple - USD 40

Cooking class in a local village near Ubud - USD 30

Day trip to Nusa Penida island - USD 60

Bali is a beautiful destination to visit and is a great place for a cheap trip. Cooking your own meals, carefully selecting accommodation or limiting meals out will definitely help you to reduce your travel costs. Slow travel is another great way to help your budget to stretch further, while exploring a place in more depth.

Travelling through Bali is definitely possible on a budget – just pick your priorities and compromise on the rest or consider travelling in the off-season and avoiding school holidays to cut down on costs. And, if you’re on the luxury end of the scale or wanting to treat yourself, the sky’s the limit.

One of the biggest hassles you will ever encounter during your trip to Bali is local transportation. This is because there is no public transportation while transfers can be quite costly. However, this should not stand in your way to having a memorable vacation. All you need is to plan and budget well.

Motorbike is an affordable and easy local transportation to get around during your stay in Bali. However, it can be a bit dangerous for anyone without motorbike riding experience despite it being an affordable deal. You will also need to have an international driver license despite it not being a requirement for renting one. This is because police will always pull you over for their regular checkups. It will cost you $20 to $30 to rent a motorbike for one week. Ensure you ask around for a reputable and reliable renter and do not forget to check the bike for any damages or scratches to avoid getting the blame.

However, if riding a motorbike is not your thing, expect to pay some significantly higher amounts to get around in Bali as you will have to hire a local driver. Yes, there are ubers. However, there are lots of problems and violence between them and the normal taxi drivers. Hence, there are areas where uber are not allowed. At times some drivers will take off leaving you stranded whenever they feel it is not safe. This makes uber not that secure and safe mode on transit in Bali.

Taxis are very popular in Canggu, Seminyak and Kuta. Just like in other countries, taxi drivers in Bali also have rip off their clients. Only use reputable taxi companies and ensure the meter is always turned on.

Whenever you have plans of going any distance, it is highly recommended that you hire a private driver. Most of the private car hires will cost around $50 or more for a single trip. You are free to haggle but keep in mind it is an expensive form of travel in Bali. You can save on transportation costs by basing yourself in either one or two areas during your entire vacation in Bali. You can also rely on group trips.

Important Tip: When you find a driver you like, consider making special arrangement for multiple day trips at discounted rates. Private drivers will definitely be happy with the business and high chances he or she will give you some good discount.

You can never do without foods and drinks. However, like accommodation, the prices vary depending on what you will be going for. For example, when you opt for the western foods, you will spend close to three times compared to if you go for the street food which can cost a mere $2 per meal. Most travelers are known to prefer both the western and local food. Breakfast will be served in the villa, hostel or hotel you book. Lunch can cost you close to $5 while dinner can shoot to $20. This totals $25 together with soft drinks in a day. Breakfast has not been included since most of the private villas and hotels do serve breakfast.

If you have plans of alcoholic drinks, add more to your budget. Beers cost less than wine or cocktails in Bali. Bintang is among the most popular options of alcohol brands in the island . However, if you prefer cocktails, consider the two for one special.

It is difficult to go for a vacation and fail to fall in love with some souvenirs. Despite not being a shopping mecca, you will come across a few things you want to carry back home. Some of the most popular souvenirs for most travelers to Bali are coffee, tea and Batik Sarongs. Despite them being available in different qualities, none of them is quite costly unless you intend to purchase copious amounts.

Massages are very popular in Bali. You will definitely want to have some experience. Most travelers indulge in massages with others opting to have a feel on a daily basis. Although this might not be the case for every visitor to Bali, I assume you will want to have the experience either once or twice a week. The basic massages cost approximately $10 an hour. Massages and random shopping in mind will cost you up to $100. Ensure that you get a good price as most tourists are always cheated on the rates.

9. Exchange money wisely : Be mindful of where you exchange your currency. Avoid exchanging money at the airport or in touristy areas, as these places often offer unfavorable rates. Instead, use ATMs to withdraw cash in the local currency, as this will typically give you a better exchange rate.

10. Use local SIM cards : Instead of using international roaming, purchase a local SIM card for your phone. This will allow you to stay connected at a much lower cost.

I am Eric, a French Australian citizen based between Australia, Asia and Bali an I love to travel and experience the world. I generally like outdoor activities, wellness, great food and venues , party and real local adventures ! I am a Yoga practitioner and fitness lover

I created this  blog because I love to travel and I want to share my experiences with others. I’ve been traveling since I was a child, and I’ve been to over 50 countries. I’ve seen some amazing things and met some amazing people, and I want to help others experience the same things.

I believe that travel is one of the best ways to learn about the world and about yourself. When you travel, you’re forced to step outside of your comfort zone and experience new things. You learn about different cultures, different religions, and different ways of life. You also learn about yourself, your strengths, and your weaknesses.

Travel can also be a great way to make new friends. When you’re traveling, you’re surrounded by people from all over the world, and you’re all in the same boat. You’re all there to explore and experience new things, and that can create a bond between people.

  • Use Local Transportation : Instead of taking taxis or hiring a private car, use local transportation like buses or motorbikes. They are much cheaper and can be a fun way to explore Bali.
  • Eat at Local Warungs : Bali has a lot of local eateries known as warungs that serve traditional Indonesian dishes at affordable prices. Eating at these places can help you save money while enjoying the local cuisine.
  • Bargain While Shopping : Bali is famous for its street markets where you can find great bargains on souvenirs and clothing. However, don't be afraid to bargain with the vendors to get a better deal.
  • Choose Free Activities : Bali offers a lot of free activities, such as visiting temples, watching traditional dance performances, and exploring beaches. Take advantage of these opportunities to save money on your trip.
  • Stay Hydrated with Refillable Water Bottles : Bali's weather can be hot and humid, and buying bottled water can add up quickly. Instead, bring a refillable water bottle and fill it up at your hotel or in local shops to save money and reduce plastic waste.

👉 During the low season, you can find great deals on flights, accommodation, and activities. Hotels and resorts offer lower rates during this time, and you can often find discounts on activities and tours. Additionally, the beaches and tourist spots are less crowded during the low season, which can make for a more relaxing and enjoyable experience.

👉 However, it's important to note that the weather can be unpredictable during the low season. There may be occasional rain and thunderstorms, but they typically don't last long and can even add to the charm of your Bali trip. Just make sure to bring a raincoat or umbrella and plan your activities around the weather forecast.

Gone are the days of 15k meals and 50k a night accommodation. But is it still possible to visit Bali on a budget?

Article overview

Accommodation

Food & drinks, transport & activities, day 1 uluwatu, day 2 uluwatu, day 3 uluwatu, day 4 legian, day 5 seminyak, day 6 legian, day 7 east bali, day 8 east bali, day 9 east bali, day 10 canggu, day 11 canggu, day 12 canggu, day 13 canggu, day 14 canggu, is bali expensive, is it possible to travel bali on a budget, what is the best time to visit bali, can i drink the tap water in bali, like this please help me share 😀, how much i spent on two weeks in bali.

I was traveling with a friend but all the prices are per person and in Indonesian Rupiah. I have included a detailed daily Bali budget further down. As of August 2023 1 USD = 15.266 IDR.

Total 3.660.000 Rp. / $247  – Average 261.400 Rp. per night per person in a double room

When I first came to Bali 14 years ago, I used to only book the first few nights in advance and then find places to stay along the way.

These days, however, I book all my accommodation in advance because the deals you get online are often much better than the price you’ll be quoted at the hotel. And many of the best hotels and homestays will be booked out months in advance, especially during high season.

I book 95% of my accommodation in Indonesia through Agoda because they have a price guarantee and the best selection of properties.

I think I’m somewhere in between a budget and a mid-range traveler. I like to save money whenever I can but I also need to feel comfortable. For me, comfort is air conditioning, hot water shower and a clean room. I like to splurge on one hotel and then stay in affordable homestays for the rest of the trip.

This time I found such a good deal on Pink Coco Hotel that I didn’t have to splurge as I had planned to. I really liked all the places we chose to stay and still managed to keep the accommodation cost quite low.

Total 4.359.000 Rp. / $294 – Average 311.000 Rp. per day

I try to eat local food at least once a day when I’m in SEA. Not only is it delicious but also very affordable. In Indonesia, Mie Goreng and Nasi Campur are my absolute favorites. But I’m also a huge foodie so I can’t stay away from all the Instagrammable cafés, restaurants and bars Bali has to offer.

If you are on a tight budget you can spend 1/2 of what I did on food and drinks if you only eat at local warungs.

Total 2.255.000 Rp. / $152 – Average 161.000 Rp. per person per day

Since I have been to Bali many times and seen most of what I want to see, I didn’t spend a lot on entrance fees and drivers this time.

However, if you have many sights and attractions on your Bali Bucket List , you probably want to see as much as possible during your two weeks. So you should budget more for activities. (Be sure to check out my guide to unusual things to do in Bali .)

To experience the “real Bali” I highly recommend getting out of the main tourist hubs. You can rent a scooter and drive by yourself or hire a driver if you prefer to let someone else maneuver the crazy Bali traffic.

🌟 I usually book this driver in advance >> Bali Private Car or Van Charter with Driver

My favorite Unique Bali experiences

Total 3.132.000 Rp. / $211

Bali has become a paradise for lovers of boho homewares, silver jewelry, surfboards ++ The island is also home to many incredible indie clothing brands and other talented artisans. So if you’re anything like me you’ll probably blow your shopping budget within a day or two.

Most of my money this time was spent at Ubud Art Market and the many markets in Canggu .

Remember that bargaining is a way of life in Bali so you shouldn’t be afraid to join in on the fun when buying from street vendors. Check out my previous post about common Bail scams for tips on how to get the best prices at the markets.

Frequently asked questions about Bali

Bali can be expensive or affordable depending on your preferences and budget. Yes, prices have increased significantly over the last three years, but it is still possible to travel Bali on a budget.

Prices will, of course, vary greatly depending on the type of accommodation, activities, and dining options you choose.

Luxury resorts on the beach and high-end restaurants can be quite expensive, while budget-friendly guesthouses and local warungs are still very affordable. It’s all about finding the right balance for your budget and preferences. You can easily spend less than what I did, but you can also easily spend 10 times more.

Yes, while the days of 15k dinners and 50k accommodation are gone, it is still possible to travel in Bali on a small budget. Here are some tips for making your trip as affordable as possible:

  • Eat at warungs (local eateries) that offer delicious Indonesian food at a fraction of the price of tourist restaurants. You get a base of rice and then you can choose your toppings from the counter. I eat at warungs at least once a day while in Bali, and I bring my own box for takeaway.
  • Ask around for people to join you on tours. The driver I recommend has a fixed price for up to 5 people, which makes it very affordable to get around.
  • Don’t be afraid to bargain at local markets. It’s expected and can often cut the price in half.
  • Take advantage of the many free or low-cost natural attractions, like beaches, waterfalls, and rice terraces. You’ll find some of the best beaches in Uluwatu , where you can explore off-the-beaten path as opposed to spending millions at beach clubs.

The best time to visit Bali is from February to April (avoid Easter). That’s when everything is green after the rainy season, and the weather is mostly sunny. There are generally fewer people during this time as well.

Bali experiences two distinct seasons, the rainy season and the dry season. I have visited Bali during every month of the year, several times, and rarely experienced rain for more than a few days at a time.

The rainy season in Bali runs from November to March. During this time, the weather is more humid and rainy, with occasional thunderstorms and heavy downpours. The upside of visiting during the wet season is that prices are lower and crowds are smaller, making it a good time to visit if you’re on a budget.

The dry season in Bali runs from April to October. This is the most popular time to visit Bali, as the weather is sunny and dry, with low humidity and little rain.

The peak tourist season is from July to August and around Christmas, so expect higher prices and larger crowds during this time.

Please don’t drink unfiltered tap water in Bali, it contains bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms due to the poor condition of pipes and the tropic climate. Under no circumstances should you fill up a regular water bottle using water from the sink. You will pay the price for it later.

On the other hand, I have always brushed my teeth in tap water and had drinks with ice cubes in everything from upscale restaurants to local warungs.

Also, please keep plastic water bottles to a minimum as there are waste management issues in most areas on the island. Bring or buy a filtered water bottle or at least a reusable bottle, many hotels and cafés offer free water refills these days.

My favorite filtered water bottle for travel, backpacking, hiking. LifeStraw Go Water Filter Bottle.

What Does A Bali Trip Cost: Your 2024 Guide To Bali Holiday Prices

OK, you’ve decided to plan a Bali trip, and you’re starting to wonder how much it’s going to cost? Is Bali expensive? Or will you save money compared to other destinations?

Will foreign transaction fees eat up your savings on cheap hotels? And just how much money should you bring with you?

Well, our guide to Bali prices and costs in this popular tourist destination should make it easy to decide what you can afford when visiting Bali and how much money you should bring with you.

We’ve broken down all the major costs on this Indonesian island, and we can assure you it’s just as affordable for young backpackers as it always was. Those coming from Western countries seeking a luxurious life won’t be disappointed with the value for their money, either.

How Much Will It Be To Visit Bali?

Close up picture of Indonesian rupiah banknotes

It’s better to think in terms of setting a travel budget rather than trying to work out how much it costs to be in Bali.

Is Bali expensive? Not really. In fact, it’s often significantly cheaper than other destinations, and certainly, it’s cheaper than the average costs of living back home.

But whether you find Bali cheap or expensive depends on you – will you eat street food , local food or Western food? What sort of hotel rooms will you book? How many tourist attractions do you intend to visit? Will you stay in South Bali, Central Bali, East Bali, etc.. Prices vary all over the island.

What’s The Average Price Of Visiting Bali?

Closeup of male hands giving Indonesian Rupiah money on a dark background

According to the local tourist board’s data, most Westerners in this popular destination spend about $3,000 (USD, not AUD) during their visit to this part of Southeast Asia for a fortnight.

This number does not include the cost of flights but does include all the other costs that people incur, from beach clubs , to travel costs, to eating in local restaurants, swimming in infinity pools, etc.

However, it’s easy to spend two weeks in Bali for half the price and still have a great time. So, please don’t get too hung up on an average price, it’s not a particularly useful piece of data.

How Much Will Flights To Bali Be?

Singapore Airlines

The cheapest flights to Bali tend to be from other parts of Southeast Asia and from Australia. This shouldn’t come as any particular surprise given that they are the closest places to fly to Indonesia from.

A round trip from Sydney can be as little as AUD 400, and it’s a bit cheaper to fly from Melbourne.

Whereas if you’re flying from London, a round trip is going to cost about 800 GBP.

And from Los Angeles or another American destination, getting to this part of Southeast Asia is going to cost $1,500 or so, round trip.

Because of this huge variance in flight costs, we tend to leave flights as a separate item outside of the overall cost of the holiday.

After all, hotel costs, food costs, etc., don’t vary much at all in Bali – the prices you pay are the same prices that other people will pay.

How Much Are Other Transportation Costs?

taxi driver giving thumb up 2023 11 27 05 03 54 utc

This really depends on you, some hotels, for example, will provide a private transfer from the international airport to your hotel room for free. Whereas others will charge $20 (or more for this service).

Renting a scooter will cost you $5 a day, but is risking your life on Bali’s roads really cost-effective? We’re not so sure.

Renting a car with a driver will come in at around $50 a day, and you can use local ride-share apps like Grab and Gojek to pay for taxis on a per-ride basis.

There are also public transport options in some cities, and public transportation costs are very low. You won’t spend a fortune on a bus fare, for example.

However, if you want local transportation to some of the other islands, you will need to pay for that, and the costs will vary depending on your final destination and the quality of your transport options. We’ve not included this expense because it can be next to nothing, or it could be quite substantial.

That means you can spend as little as $0 a day (assuming you stay within walking distance of your resort and didn’t pay for the hotel transfer service) to $50 a day.

How Much Will Accommodation Costs Be?

Much depends on your travel style as to how much you’re going to spend on accommodation in Bali .

Dorm Vs Private Room

The first choice you’re going to face is if you’re looking for the cheapest of options. Are you willing to stay in a dorm, or do you need at least a double room all to yourself?

You can find a dorm for $10 a night and a cheap-ish room for $20+ a night.

That means you could spend as little as $10 a night for two weeks on accommodation.

Budget Vs Mid-Range Vs Luxury Vs Ultra-Luxury

However, there is really no maximum spend on accommodation either. If you take a look at the hotel transfers at Denpasar Airport , you will quickly see just how many hotels are based in Bali.

All the world’s biggest name brands are represented on the island, and while a dorm might be $10 a night, a budget room $20 a night, a mid-range can quickly hit $50-$60, a luxury resort might be $300+ a night, and the ultra-luxury resorts (such as Mandapa by The Ritz-Carlton) can cost more than $1,000 a night!

We’re going to assume, however, that if you’re budgeting for your Bali holiday , you probably aren’t going to be spending \$1,000 or more a night on your hotel room.

Most people will have private rooms, of course, but most won’t spend a fortune on them.

We’ll keep things reasonable to give you a good estimate of how much you need at the end.

$50 a night would be good for a mid-range budget and $20 for a tighter budget. If you want better prices when you find accommodation in Bali , try to book during the off-season. Most places offer lower prices at this time of year.

How Much Will Food Be?

10 must try balinese foods and local delights by finns bali

Street food in Bali is ridiculously cheap. It’s not hard to find a meal here on most of the island for $1 from a street vendor, though in major cities, it might be a little more.

But as with hotel rooms, there are many different prices of food in Bali depending on how much you want to spend.

Warungs Vs Fine Dining

If you love the idea of eating Balinese food throughout your trip, then the local warungs (restaurants) are awesome.

You can easily find dishes for as little as $2, and they tend to be wholesome and use local ingredients.

If you want something a bit more like home, then you can find that too, and there are plenty of cafes and mid-range restaurants offering everything from vegan fare to pizzas and burgers.

You can spend as much as you like in places like this, but $10-$20 per person is probably about right for most people.

Then, there’s fine dining , and the prices in Bali for fine dining are a bargain, but they are still pretty stiff, too.

You can easily spend $300+ on a fine dining meal and much, much more if you start throwing in top-notch international wines over and over above the meal.

However, we’d say that \$15-\$20 a day is probably enough for food but leave some room for a splurge day or two, like when you visit FINNS Beach Club and enjoy different dishes from all seven of their kitchens!

How Much Is A Beer In Bali?

full glass of beer 2023 11 27 05 02 45 utc

The local beer, Bintang, comes in small and large bottles. The small one usually sells for about 30,000 IDR ($2), and the bigger one for 55,000 IDR ($3.50).

That means drinking beer is pretty cheap compared to the West, and it’s a good thing because cold beer is something many of us need in Bali’s heat.

Cocktails Cost More

20170728 gallery cocktail frozen berry margarita

However, cocktails are more expensive than beer. Substantially so, in fact.

If you want to keep your cocktail spending in check – look out for the happy hours in bars throughout Bali, then you will get two for one on select cocktails, which makes them much better value.

A cocktail will normally cost around 150,000-200,000 IDR (roughly $8-$12).

We won’t add alcohol to the budget because it’s not a necessity, but if you want to add alcohol, now you have an idea of how much to allocate for it.

Soft drinks are very cheap, however, and generally speaking, you won’t need to pay more than $1 for one at a stall or market. The fair amount for these things in cafes and bars tends to be higher because you’re paying for the setting, too.

How Much Will I Need To Tip In Bali?

Close up picture of Indonesian rupiah coins

Balinese culture is not a tipping culture , and you are not expected to tip anywhere.

Before you leave a tip, you should carefully examine the bill for a service charge (this is super common in the more heavily touristed areas) and if you see one, don’t tip. (Unless you want to tip twice, that is).

If, however, you feel that the service you have received anywhere is outstanding and you want to be generous, then a tip of 10-15% will always be welcomed.

If you go somewhere that tourists rarely if ever venture, however, you may find that a server tries to return the tip because they don’t know what tipping is.

What Should I Budget For A Fortnight In Bali?

akaya bali hotel sanur

This entirely depends on you, but we’d recommend that you bring about $1,500 – $2,000 for a good time, and this is how we came by that figure (and please remember that number does not include flight costs).

A Full Breakdown Of Costs For Budgeting In Bali

We’re going to assume that you’ve come to Bali for some fun and that you don’t want the most basic lifestyle possible and nor are you wealthy enough to spend every night sleeping on special pillows watched over by your personal butler at the Four Seasons (though if you are doing the latter, that’s awesome).

Accommodation Prices

As we said before, you can spend as little as $10 a night, but we’d recommend spending $50 and picking a nice mid-range hotel.

There’s something nice about sleeping in a comfy bed and having a free breakfast and a pool to use. Some mid-range hotels also have gyms and other cool facilities to use.

Food Prices

We think most people are going to mix this up a lot. Everyone should try some street food, warung food is awesome, but grabbing some nice meals in mid-range international restaurants is also a nice part of a holiday.

And you could always push the boat right out and go for somewhere super fancy once or twice in your time in Bali.

Say $20/day per person, and you should be able to have a great time.

Transport Costs

This is going to depend on how much of Bali you want to see, but some days will probably cost nothing as you drift to the beach from your hotel room on foot and enjoy a day in the sun.

On other days, you might spend $100 as you head off to remote parts of the island.

$20 a day is probably a reasonable budget, but $50 might be wiser if you want to travel a lot.

Activity Outlays

Female with a pink dress standing at Temple gates at Lempuyang Luhur temple in Bali

Some trips and activities cost next to nothing, others are pretty expensive. $20-$30 per person per day is a good number, which means you can have plenty of fun in Bali.

Miscellaneous

This might include alcohol or souvenir shopping, etc., and only you can work out how much you want to take for this final column on the expense sheet. It will vary dramatically from person to person.

Note:  To avoid excessive transaction fees in Bali, never allow the local vendor to translate your payment into your home currency. Always select the option on the card machine to pay in IDR.

How Much Will A Trip To Bali Cost?

It really all depends on you, but a good budget for a two-week holiday in Bali is probably around $1,500-$2,000 plus flight costs.

This won’t cover a private driver for every day or your stay, but it will cover entry fees to most attractions, trips to the rice terraces , transport costs from the international airport and around the island, etc. and a room with air conditioning.

How Much Is A 7-Day Trip To Bali? How Much Does It Cost To Go To Bali For A Week?

Again, this is down to you, and we can’t speak to the flight costs, but you can have a good time in Bali for a week from as little as $500, though we’d try to bring $1,000-$1,500 and push the boat out a little.

You could have at least a couple of great days out with that budget and do something like scuba diving with sea turtles as well as visiting FINNS.

Is $1,000 (AUD) Enough For A Week In Bali?

Yes, in fact, many digital nomads live in Bali for less than that amount each month! It all depends on how you spend your money as to how much of a good time you have on that amount.

How Much Spending Money Is Enough For A Week In Bali?

$500 is probably the minimum you’d want to have a good time in Bali, but you can get by with less. If you want an amazing holiday, we’d recommend about $1,000-$1,500 for a week.

How Much Money Do You Need Per Day In Bali? Is $100 A Day Enough For Bali?

You can get by with very little, $20-$30 a day, but we’d recommend at least $100 a day for a good holiday and more if you can afford it.

How Expensive Is Bali For Tourists?

You can expect to pay less in Bali for nearly everything than you would at home, assuming you’re coming from the West or Australia. However, if you want the ultra-luxurious lifestyle, you can still expect to pay a fairly substantial amount for it.

How Much Would A Meal Cost In Bali?

Anything from $1 at a street vendor to $3 in a warung in the rice terraces to $300+ in a fancy dining place in a top-end hotel.

How Do I Book The Best Value Bali Holiday?

The folks at  Bali Res Centre  have your back on this. They can help you find everything that you need at a sensible price.

Their local connections mean that they can always help you get rooms, flights, etc., that are great value for money, and their staff can steer you around any minor issues that have cropped up in Bali that aren’t on the official websites of hotels, etc.

Final Thoughts On The Cost Of Time In Bali

You can get great deals for a good time in Bali on any budget, and many people have an amazing holiday on the island without spending very much money at all.

However, if you want an ultra-luxury lifestyle and endless fancy dining, that’s here too. It’s just going to cost a bit more.

How Much Does It Cost To Travel To Bali For One Month

By: Author Robyn Robledo

Posted on Last updated: March 2, 2024

how much does it cost to travel to Bali for 1 month Pin

While I do love traveling to Europe, 1 month in Indonesia and Southeast Asia costs way less than the the former.  I was mixed about Bali.  Parts of it were absolutely wonderful, like Canggu.  And parts were way too rural and impoverished for me.  The cost to travel to Bali depends a lot on your standards for creature comforts. Personally, I think it’s important to know where your own standards lie and what you expect from your travels in order to budget accordingly. This post will give you a good idea of how much Bali will cost for a month whether you’re a budget traveler or luxury traveler.

Our Actual Costs to go to Bali for 1 Month

Cost of airfare to get to & return from bali – $670 per person (our cost = $4,690).

We bought two one-way tickets for this trip at two different times.  First, we had bought tickets from New Zealand to Bali which were only $230 per person since we were spending a month in New Zealand first.  This was a great deal that we found with Skyscanner alerts.  The cheapest I could get for the Bali to Los Angelas flight was $440 per person and it ended up being a very difficult flight with long layovers and flight changes.  This isn’t too pricey of a flight for a couple or small family but for our large family of 7, the airfare was a significant expenditure.

Best Place to Visit in Bali: Canggu

Cost of Food in Bali – Average $300 per person (Our cost = $600 – $2000)

When we were in Medewi, our large family of 7 was able to eat at the warung (local restaurant) for about $50 per day and we ate like kings.  A typical lunch of Nasi Goreng (fried rice with a fried egg on top) costs a little over $1 USD. Add an extra egg for only sixty cents and you’re ready to surf all day.  For about $20 USD total, we’d have huge dinners of fried fish and chicken, vegetable soup, rice, and fruit.

In Canggu, our food budget easily went up to around $75 USD per day, but we ate absolutely amazing food and a lot of it.

We spent very little on tourist activities while here since we were here to surf and that’s about it.  The rest of the money was spent on food.  Once we were in Canggu we spent a little more eating out than in other places we stayed (Medewi, Ubud, etc).  Our three favorite spots were The Garden Pizza House (delicious almost-italian-quality pizza and they delivered it to our rental house which was awesome), Front Cafe for coffee, Monsieur Spoon for chocolate croissants after our morning surf session, and Scoops Gelato House.

To summarize:

  • In Medewi our food costs were probably $5 per person per day
  • In Canggu (as well as the Bukit Peninsula and Ubud) our food costs where $10-15 per person per day

Things to do in Ubud, Bali

Cost of Accommodation – $40-50 per night for 2, $70-80 per night for large groups (Our cost= $2,300)

Half the time we were in Medewi and the Airbnb we stayed at cost only $750 for the whole month.

Here is what we spent for the month in Bali.  You could easily spend much less than this if you stayed in an Airbnb in a more rural area like Medewi (although not at Bombora, which is the upscale resort that sits on the point of Medewi– highly recommended if you have money to spend and want the best surf in Bali).

  • Our original Airbnb in rural Medewi was $750 for 28 days (even though we only stayed for about 14 of those days)
  • Airbnbs on our 11-day road trip around Bali including Canggu, Seminyak, Ubud, and Munduk cost $880
  • And finally, our Airbnb for one week in Canggu in a really nice house was $700

While our Airbnb in Canguu may seem relatively expensive, it was a luxury house.  There were three large, clean rooms, our own private swimming pool, and someone came to clean every day.  it was wonderful and I highly recommend this Airbnb.

Get a $40 credit on your first AirBnb by clicking here!

Canggu, Adventurous Warm Weather Winter Destinations

Cost of Transportation – $400

This cost included the $200 to rent an SUV from a local.   Renting a car in Bali comes with risks, as there’s no insurance. We trusted a local, paid $200 USD, and got a new SUV. Despite a minor incident (scooter collision costing $15 USD), it was a cheap but not entirely recommended option due to Bali’s chaotic driving conditions.

While at our Airbnb in Canggu, we also rented one scooter for four days which only cost about $25 USD total. Riding a motorbike around Canggu was much easier than driving an SUV on Bali’s main highway and I highly recommend it.  If you are only a 1 or 2 people, renting a motorbike for a whole months would only be around $200.

Our only other transportation cost was getting a shuttle to and from the airport which ended up costing about $50 USD each way.

  • An SUV car rental (from a local) cost us about $15 per day, $200 for 2 weeks. I wouldn’t recommend renting a car in Bali because driving here is crazy but if you do, rent from a legit car rental brand even though it will probably end up costing more like $30 per day
  • I highly recommend motorbike rentals. They cost $5-10 dollars per day or around $200 for the month
  • Transportation to and from the airport in usually necessary and cost us $100 total . For smaller groups you can probably find a shuttle closer to $50 roundtrip

Other Expenses – $100

The final expense is very small and it’s really just for any tourist attractions you may be interested in. We didn’t see many attractions just because we weren’t really interested however I still recommend putting a little money aside for things like visiting temples, the monkey forest, or Bali waterfalls .

Total trip cost for 7 people to visit Bali for 1 month – $8,000

  • Airfare – $4,700
  • Accommodation – $2,300
  • Food – $1,500
  • Transportation – $400
  • Other expenses – $100

Estimated trip cost for 2 people to visit Bali for 1 month – $3,400

  • Airfare – $1,400
  • Accommodation – $1,500
  • Transportation – $300

Final Tips for Bali

  • Medewi was super cost effective and the food was decent, but some nights one of the younger kids wouldn’t eat what was served and then they’d go to bed complaining how hungry they were.  I’m all about making my kids suck things up, but when I too am tired and hungry, there’s only so much I can take. A big problem was that I got tired of so much fried food and rancid fats.  I am just too picky about how my food is prepared and I needed a grocery store so that I could cook my large family meals that everyone would eat.

So we spent extra to go to Canggu for two weeks where we had huge grocery stores and a variety of restaurants to choose from.

  • Personally, I love road trips and when Medewi wasn’t lining up to my expectations, we found a local with a car, handed him about $200 USD, shook hands, and headed out to explore the Bukit Peninsula and the mountains north of Ubud.  While I loved exploring Bali, I will warn you, driving here is not for the faint of heart.   It was crazy ! While it is technically a two lane higway, people drive as if it’s a four or six land highway with scooters passing you on both sides and semi’s that you have to have some nerve to pass before oncoming traffic hits you.  But if you can get over the craziness of it all, you’ll see that drivers are actually quite good and there are very few accidents.
  • I can’t recommend enough to stay in Canggu.  It’s the perfect Bali experience and while you will spend a little more than somewhere like Medewi, it’s still more affordable than Ubud or the Bukit peninsula plus is way less touristy. 32 Brutally Honest Tips Before Visiting Bali For First Timers 2024 Guide

Thinking of visiting Bali for the first time and unsure if it’s going to be a holiday for you? We were in the same boat too. Having lived in Australia for over 11 years now, I can’t say I’ve ever heard good things about visiting Bali in Indonesia.

But, with Bali being so close to Australia, we decided it would be a good time to visit the notorious Indonesian island and see it for ourselves over the Christmas holidays in the rainy season.

While we were there, we made loads of notes of things that stood out for us that we wish we knew before exploring Bali. So, we hope our Bali travel tips come in handy for you before visiting this South East Asian island.

We 100% recommend getting travel insurance when visiting Bali because it’s not uncommon that many travelers need to visit a doctor or the hospital. We always book Cover More Insurance which covers us for everything.

Table of Contents

Best things about visiting Bali

In this Bali travel guide, we’re going to start off by sharing the pros for visiting Bali. The natural beauty of the island, combined with the local cuisine and yoga studios dotted around the jungle, it’s no wonder many people have an amazing time when they visit Bali Indonesia.

1. No jet lag!

visiting-bali-for-first-timers

One of the best things that stood out for us when visiting Bali is how close it is to Australia. Obviously we all know that, but sitting on a flight for just six hours and there being only a 2 hour time difference is absolute gold dust for anyone living in Australia. This meant we could start our trip straight away as soon as we landed as Ngurah Rai International Airport without feeling a bit delirious when we landed.

2. Accommodation is hard to choose because it’s all amazing

maya-sayang-seminyak-best-hotel-in-bali

We are big travellers and have visited many countries around the world. But we often don’t stay in really nice places because we want our money to stretch far on our trips. But, when it comes to Bali, the accommodation is honestly on another level.

We found it really hard to decide where to stay in Bali because all of the accommodation really is incredible. On our first night, we stayed at Maya Sayang in Seminyak and we couldn’t believe it that we had an entire villa to ourselves. We had a big private swimming pool, kitchen and lounge room with an ice cold bedroom which was beautiful.

With that in mind, make sure you check that your hotel room comes with air con because one of the final hotels we booked had more expensive rooms without aircon. We thought that was kind of weird, so just check to make sure.

The places we booked in Bali which were all amazing were the following:

Seminyak: Maya Sayang

Canggu: Villa Kano

Ubud: Menzel Hotel

Uluwatu: Gravity Hotel (adult’s only)

3. Pre-book a taxi to your accommodation

bali-drivers

I strongly recommend booking a taxi from the airport to your accommodation before you arrive in Bali. Your hotel will be happy to book but will most likely cost more than a taxi. We booked our via Booking.com for about $12 AUD from the airport to Seminyak.

The taxi drivers are really efficient in Bali and will get in touch with you via Whatsapp the day before you arrive and in the hours leading up to when you arrive. When you get to the airport, they will be waiting outside the arrivals with a sign with your name on it.

4. Understanding the how to hire a driver for the day

hiring-a-driver-in-bali

If there’s one thing everyone said to me when I mentioned we were going to Bali, everyone had a driver we could contact. Firstly I just didn’t understand what a driver really is. But, what they mean is a taxi driver. I’m not sure if public transport is something that many travelers do in Bali, but it seems everyone gets around using motorbikes or drivers.

The taxi driver who picked us up from the airport gave us a story about how he’s desperate for work, and of course we paid him more than double to take us back to the airport the following morning for our flight to Flores. In hindsight we should have bargained with him, but we had just landed and I totally wasn’t in the mood to haggle $10 or so.

5. Download Grab and Gojek

grab-gojek-bali

I had heard people talking about Grab and Gojek before, and they are basically Indonesia’s version of Uber but much more. You can get a motorbike taxi or order a car taxi from both. If you order a motorbike taxi, each person in your holiday will have to order a motorbike taxi too (you can’t order for multiple people). This means your motorbike taxis won’t turn up at the same time.

It’s also worth mentioning that you need to be careful when typing in the address of the place you want to go to. We tried to visit a temple but because there are many with almost the same name, we lost each other for about 1h30m while we ended up at different sites.

Also bear in mind that there are certain no go places in Bali for Grabs and Gojeks because of the local taxis. So if your Grab or Gojek ask you to walk a bit for them to pick you up, it’s because you’re standing next to the local taxis and they can’t pick you up from there. Gojek by the way is the cheaper one to order taxis from.

I personally wouldn’t hire a car to drive around Bali myself as we saw some tourists crash and also you have to watch out for the motorbikes. I also wouldn’t recommend hiring a motorbike unless you’re a super confident motorbike driver.

6. Buy a SIM card from Telkomsel not from XL

phone-network-bali

When we arrived at Denpasar airport, we ended up buying a mobile sim card from XL because they had no line. There’s a reasons why Telkomsel had a line because they are the most popular network to go with. XL didn’t work in Ubud or Sumba for us.

One thing to note is to get way more internet data than you think you’ll need. I tried to top up on the XL app but it wouldn’t accept any bank cards. So, on our final day, one of the staff from our hotel helped me do it and I gave her the cash.

It’s also worth noting that buying a SIM at the airport will cost you 350,000 IDR ($35) for 25GB. Our driver told us we paid $10 more than we should have for this.

7. It’s not as hot as other Indonesian islands

gravity-hotel-bali

We were expecting Bali to be super hot, but it’s actually not as hot as even Cairns is at Christmas. Sumba and Flores were way hotter and of course Ubud was hotter than by the beach areas. We were told by locals that it gets hotter in the dry season when it’s sunny.

It also surprised us not to see that much pollution in Bali. The air is much cleaner than we were expecting.

8. More Europeans than Australians visiting Bali now

pandang-padang-beach-uluwatu-bali

I was expecting to see mostly Australians in Bali, yet we just heard mostly Europeans and Brits there which definitely surprised us! Maybe it’s true the Aussies are all heading to Europe now instead?!

9. Prebook restaurants

mamasan-seminyak-restaurants-bali

We were surprised that you have to pre-book some restaurants in Bali, especially if it’s the weekend. If you’ve been to Thailand or Vietnam, Bali isn’t the same with the restaurants having plastic kids chairs out on the street. Expect to see fully Westernised restaurants in Bali which are home to healthy food, you might think you’re back in Australia!

When we were in Uluwatu, we had to wait about 1h30m to get a table at a restaurant so it really helps to plan where you want to eat out.

I feel like the food is better in Bali than in Australia, tasting fresher and better dishes. Expect to pay around $40 for breakfast for 2 and about $80 for dinner in Bali. Unsurprisingly, it’s not that easy to find proper local restaurants in the touristy areas.

10. Flower baths are absolutely amazing

flower-bath-bali

One thing we just loved about Bali are the flower baths. It might sound random but they are the most relaxing thing ever. I watched the woman put the flower petals in the bath and she literally threw them in, there didn’t seem an art to the one we got in. She also nailed the perfect temperature for the bath as well.

But, it’s not only the flower baths, the actually bath tubs in Bali are just incredible and feel like you’re in a sunken rowing boat. Honestly, it’s the best thing in the world!

11. Book a visit to Karsa Spa

karsa-spa-bali

Talking about flower baths, you have to book a visit to Karsa Spa in Ubud. Our friends told us about this place and just wow – I think it was our favourite thing we did in Bali. This is also one of the best spas in Bali for a reason. We paid $40 each for the best one hour massage we’ve ever had, a body scrub and flower bath and it was absolutely amazing.

Be prepared to randomly pay $5 for your taxi driver to take you down to the spa. The village where the spa is, is currently charging cars to drive through. When you reach the spa, it’s in the most beautiful rice paddies. Honestly, this place is just incredible!

12. The jungle in Ubud really is incredible

ubud-jungle-views-bali

I knew Ubud would be beautiful but the jungle is exceptional here. I felt like I was walking in an ancient rainforest all the time around this area and can see why expats live here. There’s a super peaceful energy about the jungle vibes here, just a shame about the crazy traffic in the town.

13. Head to Uluwatu for the beach not Canggu

canggu-beach-bali

If you’re looking for a beach holiday, stay away from Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu and head to Uluwatu as this is the area you’ll want to be in. We heard the beaches aren’t great in Bali, but wow… we visited Canggu beach and it had dirty brown sand, and wasn’t inviting in the slightest.

14. Bata Bolong for buying stone Buddha statues

buddha-statues-ubud

When we travelled back down from Ubud to the airpot, we passed by Bata Bolong which is home to the famous buddha statues you can buy for your home. We would have loved to spent a bit of time looking at these shops as they are pretty amazing.

15. Cover up at temples

ubud-temples-bali

Might seem obvious, but cover up when you visit Bali temples. You’ll need to have your knees and shoulders covered, but most of the entrance fees will include a sarong to borrow while you’re there.

16. Beach clubs are fun

finns-beach-club-bali

We wanted to check out one of the beach clubs because Bali is home to the biggest beach club in South East Asia. While we visited the one next door called Finns Beach Club, it’s not as intimidating as you might think. What surprised me was seeing everyone party here, including families with their grandparents!

17. Choose where to spend New Years Eve wisely

new-years-eve-in-ubud

If you’re visiting Bali over New Years like we were, I would choose where to spend New Years Eve wisely. Originally we were going to go to Finns Beach Club in Canggu or Sundays Beach Club in Uluwatu but we decided that logistically it made more sense to spend it in Ubud.

When people asked us where we were spending New Years, I could tell everyone had that look of ‘oh Ubud’ like a ‘poor you’. And to be honest, they were probably right. When we went out, the bars were dead. We found one bar that had a good live band that we had fun in the end. But if we had really known, we probably would have spent it by the beaches if we were up for partying.

We found a YouTube page called Online Bali Driver & Tours so we could get a bit of an understanding about the areas in Bali. It’s just a guy driving around on a motorbike, but I like how authentic his videos are – none are edited.

18. It’s an easy toned down version of India

spiritual-bali-pyramids-of-chi

Bali is a brilliant little island to introduce you into the South East Asia because there are so many westernised places here. While many people feel Bali is spiritual, especially in the area of Ubud, it’s a great place to start with, with more of the luxuries you’ll get back home, like food and accommodation.

The not so good things about Bali

In this guide to Bali, we’re also sharing the not so good things to know because there are quite a few that stood out for us even though it is a beautiful island.

19. Bali belly is indeed a big thing

bali-belly

You may have heard about Bali belly and unfortunately it really is a thing. Within 16 hours of being back in Bali after our trip to Flores Island, I got severely ill with really bad stomach cramps and had to spend a few days in bed. I thought it was from ice at the beach club, but it turns out the bars have to import the ice in so it could have been from a restaurant.

And while the ice has to be imported, make sure you brush your teeth with bottled water and never drink tap water. I personally wouldn’t drink hot drinks as Steve had a coffee in Sumba island and he ended up in bed for a couple of days too.

Although the food in Bali Indonesia tastes so fresh, we actually spent pretty much the entire trip eating nasi goreng (fried rice) because we thought it would be better to eat Indonesian food than western food considering how ill we got.

Tip – since we recently returned from Bali, we met a couple who lived there for two years and avoided getting Bali belly the entire time. I couldn’t believe it considering I got it within 16 hours of being there. They took dukoral before they landed in Bali and again a few weeks later and swear that was the reason they never got sick!

20. It’s like being in an Instagram shoot all day long

Bali-instagram-shoot

The main problem we found with visiting the touristy areas of Bali is that it felt like we were gatecrashing everyone’s Instagram shoots. It felt like this from the moment we got up until the moment we went to bed and it definitely took away the excitement travel usually gives us. Be prepared because it is really full on, much more than we personally saw in Italy and Greece months beforehand.

21. But the Balinese culture is evident

bali-culture

And even though the tourists in Bali are probably the worst part about visiting Bali, the culture is evident. I loved seeing beautiful temples hidden down laneways in Ubud. I also loved seeing the offerings everywhere on the streets throughout Bali and the culture definitely isn’t something that is hidden away from you.

When you see offerings on the floor, please do not step on them so just be careful where you’re walking.

22. Everywhere takes longer than Google Maps will tell you

Bali-traffic

When you’re planning your trip to Bali no matter if it’s in the rainy season or dry season, don’t take Google Maps as gospel. While the distance between Canggu and Ubud for example doesn’t look that far, the traffic will add on extra time when visiting this Indonesian island. That 1h15m drive actually took us 3 hours simply because we were sat in traffic for so long.

But, there is a way to get around it. Book a driver for first thing in the morning and you’ll cut the time down significantly because it seems the traffic doesn’t build up until after 10am.

When we were visiting Uluwatu in Southern Bali, it took us only 40 minutes to get there from the airport because we arrived early, but we had to give ourselves at least 1hr-1h30m to get back because of the traffic. Many tourists end up heading over to Gili Islands to go snorkelling or scuba diving, and Nusa Dua, Sanur Beach and Nusa Penida are super popular destinations.

You’ll also notice a trend with Bali taxi drivers. They will ask you the same questions, all trying to poach you to give them extra work. After a while it will become exhausting.

23. It’s not quite as cheap as you think it will be

bali-food

As we’ve spent a fair bit of time in Southeast Asia, we were expecting the food to be super cheap in Bali. To be honest, it’s not. While it’s obviously cheaper than Australia, the cost of eating out isn’t that cheap. We spent $40 on breakfast at a Westernised restaurant, and about $80-$100 on dinner. While you can eat local food away from the touristy areas, we didn’t expect touristy areas to be that expensive.

If you’re looking to drink alcohol, cocktails are around $12 and wine can be as expensive as $17 for a small glass of Australian wine.

24. And floating breakfasts are hard to eat

floating-breakfasts-bali

When visiting Bali, you have to buy into the floating breakfasts because it is the ultimate Bali experience! The funny thing is they are really hard to eat at! Because the breakfast is floating on water, it’s near to impossible to eat with cutlery because the breakfast is floating. Order fruit and toast and you should be alright!

25. Always carry toilet paper around with you

visit-bali

It’s a no brainer, especially given how bad Bali belly is, but always carry toilet paper with you when you’re on a road trip to Bali. You may need to stop off in the middle of nowhere to run to the toilet so bring some toilet paper with you.

When we visited the nearby Sumba Island, we struggled to find toilet paper because they just don’t use it.

26. It’s not very walkable

walking-in-bali

It really surprised me how Bali Indonesia is actually not that walkable. While I was expecting areas to be a bit like Koh San Road in Bangkok with a strip of bars, restaurants etc, most of the places in Bali are spread out. This means you have to order taxis or hire a motorbike to get around.

It you’re especially visiting Uluwatu, you will need to hire a cab or bike to go everywhere because it’s all spread out. In Canggu, there’s no footpaths so you have to share the path with so many travelers on motorbikes which isn’t a very enjoyable walk. We gave up in the end and hailed down a cab.

27. How much do things really cost?

visiting-bali

It’s also kinda hard to know how much everything costs because they also add on 21% onto food and drinks at bars and restaurants. Read the fine print on the menu as it should say whether the tax is included in the price or not.

28. Tegallalang Rice Terrace feels like a theme park

tis-cafe-ubud

We were looking forward to seeing the famous rice terraces, and while we only visited Tegallalang Rice Terrace, it really did feel like a theme park, no matter how beautiful it is. With the ‘Love Bali’ sign, the endless amount of big swings at every restaurant lining the rice terrace, it just felt like a theme park for us and we didn’t stay too long.

Some friends of ours told us about Tis Cafe where you can use their infinity pool over looking the rice terrace when ordering food or drinks here. The pool is beautiful but get here early to secure a sun lounger.

29. Be aware of the monkey forest

monkey-forest-ubud

I had heard about the infamous monkey forest, but be careful if you go because some of our followers told us about how they got bitten and had to go to hospital to get a rabies jab. As I said, make sure you get travel insurance from Cover More here before you go.

Weirdly I was expecting to see monkeys everywhere in Ubud, yet they seem to stay in one place from what we saw.

30. Rainy season actually means rain

bali-rain

We decided to visit Bali in the wet season which is also one of the high season too because it was at Christmas, but it rained a lot. I was expecting a shower in the afternoon but it’s like a monsoon when it rains and everywhere floods.

Looking back on this, I would have booked in the dry season instead.

31. Expect people smoking or vaping at outdoor restaurants

bali-smoking

If you’re reading this Bali travel guide from Australia, you’ll probably find it weird to see a lot of people smoking in restaurants. Don’t worry too much, people only smoke in outdoor restaurants, but it surprised us as we never see smokers much anymore where we live.

32. What about the sex before marriage law?

bali-sex-before-marriage

If you’re concerned about the sex before marriage law, don’t worry too much. It doesn’t impact tourists as it’s a law for local people, no matter how crazy it really is.

We hope this guide to Bali has helped prepare you for your trip to this Indonesian island! If you have any questions, please let us know in the comments below!

Thank you for sharing your Bali experience. Very helpful information as we are visiting there in 3 weeks.

Thank you for sharing! I am taking a few pointers. It will be our first visit to any part of Asia. Very excited however want to go with my eyes open. Also thank you for being really about Bali belly. Everyone says ‘don’t worry about it’, but I rather want to be prepared. We will be heading over in Sept 24.

I’m Avinash An Avid Traveller From Bangalore

Hi Everyone! I’m Avinash Singh from…. It’s a tough one as I spent most of my life in Assam and later hopped around a few cities like Delhi, Mumbai for more than 2 years each. Presently I stay in Bangalore where I work and save fuel. This provides me with the ability to explore this beautiful world. I lost count of cities and states I travelled to in India. But  I have the ultimate goal to see it all. Travelling around India, I also got bitten by the travel bug of finally heading out of the country where I visited Sri Lanka on a solo trip. And there has been nothing stopping me after that. And now as I write this article, I have around 15 stamps on my passport from all around Asia and my recent EuroTrip. Here’s my story of how I visited Bali at a budget of just ₹15,000 for 5 Days ( including flight tickets from Cambodia to Bali). Honeymooners if you’re wondering if Bali of Phuket is the better destination for Indians, you don’t need to think too much.

Travelling To Bali In ₹ 15,000 For 5 Days

Bali has been on the list of almost everyone from solo to honeymoon travellers. This Indonesian island offers you spectacular gems Kelingking beach and the gushing waterfalls. The most surprising one for me was definitely the Kelingking beach. Trekking here is just mind-blowing. From riding around the beautiful roads to almost being eaten up by a python, there are lots of stories to share with you guys. Let’s keep those stories for some other day. As many of you guys must be interested to know I covered Bali in 5 days on a tight budget (on such a budget, which people spend on their Goa trip) let me focus on that. So here’s how I managed my budget during this international trip.

Bali Offers Free Visa for Indians

Visa for Indians is free so read this right.  For a 30 days trip, you don’t need any visa when you are in Bali. Just pack your bags and go. So even with just ₹5000 in your pocket, you can definitely feel like a millionaire in Bali. So yes, covering Bali at ₹15000 for 5 days is doable at not even a shoestring budget. Trust me, I had my fair share of Nasi Goreng with some Bali coffee. So for those coffee lovers out there, you can get your Kopi Luwak for as cheap as a dollar per cup.

Airport Transfer Cost From ₹ 40 To ₹ 2000 In Bali

Airport transfer is not a tough one if you are used to Uber and Ola. Indonesia has its giant taxi service called Gojek. And you don’t need a sim to use it.  Connect to the airport Wifi and wait for the drivers to take you towards the city. I had a hostel booked for the night so I took the bike taxi and headed over to Kuta for just ₹ 40. If you are planning to go towards Ubud or somewhere far, check google maps taxi section for the rates comparing Gojek and Grab. I won’t suggest going out and bargaining with local taxi drivers as I have heard bad reviews for that. So try Gojek or Grab if you wish to save a buck for your coffee or Nasi Goreng.

Sim Card Are Priced At ₹ 500 To ₹ 600 In Bali

Cheap sim cards cost you from ₹500 to ₹600 depending on the data you require. Most sim cards come with a month’s validity. For 600 which is less than 10$, I had 10gb of data that worked almost all around the Island. From the top of Mount Batur to the bottom of Kelingking Beach. Ignore airports for sim as they might be costlier instead get it from local vendor shops.

Transportation Around Bali

Like the airport transfer, you can try Gojek/Grab but many areas like Ubud and Kuta don’t allow them. But you can find people with pamphlets sitting around saying ‘Bike Taxi’. Probably the government does this to support local drivers. But I wasn’t comfortable to travel by these since I wasn’t sure if the prices were regulated.  So you have two options, from renting a scooter which I did to taking taxis if you are part of a bigger group.

Depending on the vehicle, scooter costs anywhere between ₹200 to ₹500 per day. Taxis charge ₹2000 to ₹3000 per day depending on the size of the car. Petrol costs ₹50 to ₹60 per litre. I enquired t he taxi prices at hostels so it should come around to that. If you face any problems you should check with the hostel or hotel desk as they will help you out for sure.

Hostels In Bali Cost From ₹ 280- ₹ 600 Per Night

I stayed only in hostels but whatever you see online in the booking sites you get that in Bali. I had no surprises when it came to hostels. So if you choose to stay in a hotel, you can definitely get what you see online. It depends on your budget but the best hostel so far during my visit is the New Ubud Hostel. For just ₹ 280 I got an air-conditioned bedroom with breakfast and proper lockers. And it’s a forest-themed one so I witnessed trees all around the property.

Bali Flights Cost From ₹ 5000- ₹ 15,000

Flights are not included in my budget as I flew to Bali at just ₹ 2000 from Cambodia. As I went on a trip to many countries with a 5 day stop in Bali which is less as there’s still so much to see at Java Island, Gili Islands, and lots more if you include the whole of Indonesia. But you can get flights ranging from ₹5000 – ₹15000 round trip depending on when you book it. As there’s sale going on to this destination almost throughout the year.

I Paid Rs ₹ 200- ₹ 500 For Food In Bali

Depending on what you can do and what you prefer to eat you have every option out there in Bali. From vegan to delicious Balinese cuisine you have lots of options to try. And if you are on a budget I would suggest you eat local as that would save you alot of money.

My 5-Day Itinerary To Bali

And finally,  here’s my itinerary, which you must be waiting for. I have tried to utilize my time as much as I could when I was there. I missed a few places but I enjoyed my time at the few I was able to visit.

Day 1 – Exploring Nusa Penida

My Flight reached Bali or Ngurah Rai International Airport at midnight so I booked a hostel after landing there near Kuta. I did this so I can start the next day heading towards Nusa Penida, the first island I wanted to visit. Most people plan a day trip to that island but I decided to stay for the night.

From Kuta, you need to head over to Sanur beach which I covered on a Gojek bike taxi. From there, I took the speed boat for 200,000 IDR (₹1000) towards the island. You can get return tickets but it’s better to book one way as while returning I got it for 150,000 IDR (₹50,000) discount. I don’t know how I deserved the discount but if you book both ways you are charged the 400,000 IDR (₹2121)

At Nusa Penida, I rented a scooter for the price mentioned above. Here’s a quick tip. Don’t take it from the guys at the dock walk and ask the cafes around. You will get it at 40 to 50%  less, which I did. You must visit  Kelingking Beach, Angel Billabong, Broken Beach and Diamond Beach here. To combat the coronavirus pandemic Bali turned fermeneted palm wine arak into bottles of sanitizer.

But you might require two days as these take time to reach from one to the other as the roads are quite bad.  And you have to come back before night as there are no street lights. Over and above all this you might also be greeted by a python, which happened to me. The python was relaxing in the middle of the covering the whole width of it.

Day 2 – Visiting Ubud

I left Nusa Penida in the morning and headed over to Ubud. It was time to meet the mountains of Bali. I took a quick  30km ride to reach my hostel. After which I headed over to this beautiful lake temple called Ulun Danu Batur. Once you Google this place you will know properly after the search why I chose it to be the first place to visit even though it was 50km away from Ubud.

Just next to the temple was the famous Handara Bali Gate, which was very crowded. So if you are planning to go to Bali you have to ignore the crowd its everywhere. If you can’t, then don’t go there. Bali is a beautiful place which you must enjoy even amid the crowd. The Bali Gate looked beautiful when the sun sank down the mountains. It looked just amazing. At these places, you need to pay entry fees of ₹150 each at the temple and the Bali Gate.

Day 3 – Midnight Trek To Mount Batur

One of the activities you must try in Bali is the Mount Batur night trek. I was tired but booked this at my hostel for ₹2000 which included transportation, food and guide. You can be picked up from almost anywhere in Bali so just check at the place you are staying and they will help you out with the cost.

bali trip cost reddit

The trek started at around 4 am as we had to reach there quite early. They picked us up from our hostels.  We ate a mini breakfast which left us energised to reach the top. It’s not a very tough trek so you can complete it with a mid fitness level. The gorgeous sunrise was definitely worth not sleeping that night. At the end of the trek, you might have to push yourself a little as it’s quite steep. And few surprises await when you start going down which I will let it be a surprise.  After the trek, we were dropped at our hostels and I slept for the whole day and did nothing much after that.

Day 4 – Trip To Bali’s Rice Terraces & Waterfalls

On this day I visited the iconic Bali Rice Terrace farms. This is a farming style later I got to know even India follows at few places. It’s beautiful for sure but a guy from Assam with rice fields all around him doesn’t get that excited for it. But you should check it out, I went to the Tegalalang Rice Terrace which is the most famous in Ubud. This has swings and the famous romantic egg made of bamboo. Here you can click some beautiful pictures.

bali trip cost reddit

I also visited the Tukad Cepung Waterfall and Tibumana Waterfall. These two waterfalls are located around 20 to 30kms away from the city. And I would suggest you at least visit 3 sightseeing spots a day in Bali. So take your time and take dip in the Tibumana waterfall.

bali trip cost reddit

Day 5 – Experiencing Uluwatu Temple

My last day in Bali was a bitter-sweet one. I couldn’t believe my entire 5-day trip to Bali was almost over. So I started my day riding all over to Kuta where I booked my stay. I stayed around 1 km from the beach, which I, unfortunately, couldn’t visit.

bali trip cost reddit

After checking into my hotel, I was ready to head out. I planned to see the Uluwatu Temple which was about 25 km away from Kuta. To enter the temple I had to wear a Sarong to cover my legs. You can also walk around the pathway on the edge of the cliff to see the picturesque view of the temple from on top of the sea. You are not allowed to enter the temple. But can wait till evening to see the Kecak Fire Dance which is performed daily. I was on a tight schedule that day so had to miss it. But don’t blame me for that.

Firstly Kuta beach is not a place to visit at night there’s nothing and it’s dark. You can walk on the other side. When it comes to partying, enjoy the nightlife at hard rock cafes and local pubs with live music. But as it was a Thursday night it wasn’t really crowded.   So that was all you needed to know about my trip to Bali of 5 days for ₹ 15,000.  You can too visit Bali at this tight budget, but it definitely depends on your preferences as the Balinese spa and other activities comes at a price. But nevertheless, I do hope you enjoy your stay in Bali as much as I did.

Table of Contents

Understanding the Cost Factors

Before we dive into the planning process, let’s discuss the key cost factors you’ll need to consider.

The airfare from India to Bali is a significant part of the budget. Depending on the time of booking, the airline you choose, and the flight’s route, prices can vary greatly.

Here’s a list of airlines that frequently operate flights from major Indian cities to Denpasar, Bali, along with approximate prices for a round-trip ticket:

  • AirAsia : One of the most budget-friendly options, AirAsia, offers flights from cities like Delhi and Mumbai to Bali. The prices typically range from INR 20,000 to INR 30,000, depending on the time of booking and season.
  • Malindo Air : This airline provides a good balance between cost and comfort, with fares typically ranging from INR 22,000 to INR 35,000.
  • Garuda Indonesia : As the national carrier of Indonesia, Garuda operates regular flights to Bali, offering a more premium experience. Prices usually fall within INR 35,000 to INR 45,000.
  • Singapore Airlines : With a layover in Singapore, this airline offers excellent service, but it comes with a heftier price tag. Expect to pay between INR 40,000 and INR 50,000 for a round trip.
  • Malaysia Airlines : Another option with a layover, this time in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Airlines’ fares typically range between INR 25,000 and INR 40,000.

Please note that these prices are approximate and can vary based on when and where you book, how far in advance you book, and the time of year you plan to travel. It’s also important to consider that additional charges may apply for baggage and in-flight amenities. Always compare flight prices from different airlines and booking platforms to secure the best deal.

Other Important Factor of Bali Budget Trip

Food and drink.

Bali is known for its delicious cuisine, with options to fit every budget. Whether you’re enjoying street food or fine dining, the cost of meals can add up.

Local Transportation

Getting around Bali involves costs, whether you’re hiring a driver, renting a scooter, or using public transportation.

Sightseeing and Activities

Entrance fees to temples, parks, and attractions, as well as the cost of activities like surfing lessons or spa treatments, need to be considered in your budget.

Detailed Planning Steps

Now, let’s explore the step-by-step guide to plan your budget trip to Bali.

Bali boasts a tropical climate, making it a year-round destination. However, to maximize savings and avoid crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons – April to June and September to October. Not only will you enjoy pleasant weather, but you’ll also find lower prices on accommodation and flights.

Look for the best deals on flights at least two to three months before your travel dates. Booking well in advance will significantly reduce your costs. Airlines like AirAsia and Malindo Air often have reasonably priced flights from major Indian cities to Denpasar, Bali’s capital.

Great news for Indian passport holders – Indonesia offers a free 30-day visa on arrival for Indian citizens. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your arrival date in Bali.

Bali offers an array of budget-friendly accommodation options, ranging from hostels to guest houses and budget hotels. Regions like Kuta, Seminyak, and Ubud are popular among tourists, providing affordable lodging options. Always compare prices on different platforms and consider booking directly through the hotel’s website as they often have exclusive discounts.

Getting Around

One of the most cost-effective and fun ways to get around Bali is by renting a scooter, which usually costs around INR 400-500 per day. Alternatively, you can also use local transport like Bemos or hire a private driver for full-day tours. Remember to negotiate prices beforehand to avoid overpaying.

Eating in Bali can be a delightful, yet budget-friendly experience. Look for local Warungs (small family-owned restaurants) that serve delicious Balinese cuisine at very affordable prices. You can enjoy a hearty meal for as low as INR 100-150. However, make sure to drink bottled water to avoid any health issues.

Activities and Sightseeing

Plan your itinerary in a way that you visit multiple attractions within the same area on the same day to save on transport costs. Admission fees for most temples and attractions in Bali are quite affordable (ranging from INR 200-500). However, if you’re a fan of water sports or plan on taking surfing lessons, be sure to negotiate for the best prices.

While shopping in Bali can be tempting, it’s essential to stick to your budget. Bali’s markets are famous for their bargaining culture, so don’t hesitate to negotiate prices for souvenirs, clothing, or handicrafts. Also, consider purchasing local SIM cards for data and communication as they are quite cheap and efficient.

Health and Safety

Travel insurance is a must. It might seem like an unnecessary expense, but it is crucial for unforeseen circumstances. Also, keep a small first-aid kit handy and follow general safety measures.

Money Saving Tips for Bali Trip

Travel during off-peak season.

Travelling during the off-peak season can significantly reduce airfare and accommodation costs.

Opt for Local Cuisine

Local food is often cheaper and gives you an authentic taste of Balinese culture.

Use Public Transport

Using public transport or renting a bike can be more economical than hiring a private cab.
