Helsinki is a compact and modern city , known for design and high technology. In 2012 the city was designated as the World Capital of Design .
Modernism, functionalism and the greatest concentration of Art Nouveau works of Northern Europe make of Helsinki a reference city in architecture. Styles, those that combine harmoniously with the advanced contemporary architecture of the city, not forgetting the traditional architecture in wood. Undeniably Alvar Aalto is the Finnish architect best known internationally.

Architecture Tour
A great tour for architecture enthusiasts, duration: 3 hours, distance: 5 km, price: €60 per person,, €260 per group, start: 10:00 am/02:00 pm.
Helsinki is a gem for architecture enthusiasts. It is impossible to find another urban space that houses a wide range of architectural styles like Helsinki. Neoclassical, Gothic Revival, Renaissance Revival, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Nordic Classicism, Functionalism, Modernism, and contemporary styles in one compact city centre. In addition to its rich architectural history and variety, Helsinki was chosen as the World Design Capital in 2012 and was awarded with City of Design status by UNESCO in 2014. All these features coupled with the importance given to design elevated Helsinki into being a major city of architecture.
Just like any other European capital, different historical periods left their marks on Helsinki; however, it is easy to miss the great works of world-renowned architects in ordinary city tours as there are layers and layers of architecture in each corner of the white city of the North. The Finnish capital hosts spectacular buildings by Engel, Saarinen, Sonck, Siren, Aalto, Revell and more. You can now join me in an inspiring architecture tour with a small group to visit and enjoy the architectural wonders this pocket-sized metropolis offers.
Please let me know which periods or architecture styles you are interested in when you book so I can arrange a route just for you.
Recommended Sights: Senate Square, Helsinki Cathedral, National Library of Finland, JugendHall, Pohjola Building, Academic Bookstore, Rautatalo, Central Railway Station, Oodi, Music Centre, Kiasma, Amos Rex, (National Museum of Finland and Finlandia Hall are under renovation, Chapel of Silence is closed until further notice). These sights are some basic recommendations and subject to change according to our group size, pace and weather conditions.
TOUR HIGHLIGHTS
National Library of Finland
National Library of Finland is the oldest and largest scholarly library in Finland. It is one of the finest examples of 19th century neoclassical style architecture in Helsinki.
Carl Ludvig Engel designed the library in 1836 but the opening wasn’t until 1844. Gustaf Nyström designed the annex to the library at the start of 20th century.
Oodi Central Library
Oodi is the new central library of Helsinki’s impressive public library network with over 40 public libraries. It was designed by ALA Architects in 2013 and inaugurated in 2018.
The library has a contemporary style focusing on glass and steel structures and an impressive wooden facade. It has three floors with each floor having different functions.
Central Railway Station
Helsinki Central Railway Station is one of the best examples of vernacular late-Jugendstil style. Eliel Saarinen designed the building in 1905 and the station’s inauguration was in 1919.
According to various polls, the station is one of the world’s most beautiful railway stations. It is one of the symbols of Helsinki and used by almost half a million people daily.

Helsinki, Finland , is a beautiful city with a rich architectural and design history, especially from the last 100 years or so. Here are a few of our favorite Helsinki design landmarks, all of which can be incorporated into any Artisans of Leisure private tour in Helsinki.
1. Temppeliaukion Kirkko (Rock Church) (1969) Nearly hidden from the street, this modern church was excavated from solid rock and covered with a domed copper roof. The low entrance leads to an open, rock-walled space flooded with light coming through the narrow windows encircling the dome. Designed by brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen.
2. Aalto House (1936) and Studio Aalto (1955, 1963) The legendary Finnish architect Alvar Aalto lived and worked in these two modernist buildings in a suburban area on the edge of the city center. We can arrange private tours of the structures, a great way to get a sense of the intimate spaces and abundant natural light, especially in the house.
3. Finlandia Hall (1971) Aalto also designed this conference, performance and event space. Covered in white marble, it’s a striking edifice in all seasons.
4. Sibelius Monument (1967) Dedicated to Finland’s most renowned composer, Jean Sibelius (1865-1957), this abstract steel sculpture by artist Eila Hiltunen is a favorite attraction in one of Helsinki’s seaside parks.
5. Olympic Stadium (1938) Built in a functionalist style, this stadium hosted the 1952 Summer Olympic Games. The tall white tower is a landmark offering panoramic views over Helsinki. Designed by architects Yrjo Lindegren and Toivo Jantti.
6. Art Nouveau neighborhoods (late 19th and early 20th centuries) Hundreds of beautiful Art Nouveau buildings line the streets of certain neighborhoods in Helsinki’s city center. Many of the details and decorations celebrate Finnish culture and history.
7. Lasipalatsi (1938), Kamppi Chapel of Silence (2012) and Amos Rex (2018) This group showcases architectural ideas over the decades. Lasipalatsi (Glass Palace) is a low-rise functionalist commercial building with huge windows designed by Viljo Revell, Niilo Kokko and Heimo Riihimaki. The work of K2S Architects, Kamppi Chapel of Silence is an oval wooden structure that sits like a sculpture on the edge of a public square. Amos Rex is a subterranean museum of art designed by JKMM Architects. Biomorphic bubbles on its roof decorate the public square above.
8. Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma (1998) and Helsinki Central Library Oodi (2018) Light pours into Kiasma through a long skylight, illuminating the white walls of the interior of the curving museum designed by American architect Steven Holl. Nearby is the Helsinki Central Library Oodi, where behind the undulating wood exterior, ALA Architects created numerous funky spaces and a balcony for taking in views of the city.
9. Design Museum (1895) Inside this historic brick building in the Helsinki Design District is a collection of thousands of objects created by influential Finnish designers such as Oiva Toikka, Tapio Wirkkala and Kaj Franck over the past century.
10. Helsinki Central Station (1919) Architect Eliel Saarinen designed this impressive train station with Art Nouveau touches. Copper trim frames the granite archway of the main entrance. Artist Emil Wickstrom designed the monumental sculptures of lantern carriers flanking the front.
Many of our travelers interested in design also enjoy the opportunity to visit local shops specializing in the best in Finnish design, including Marimekko (textiles), Artek (furniture and housewares) and Iittala (glass), as well as smaller boutiques in the Design District dedicated to up-and-coming talents.

The saunas offer direct access to the outdoor seating area and the sea, where it is possible to enjoy a refreshing swim, all year round. There are separate changing rooms and shower facilities for men and women but as the saunas and other public areas are mixed, it means that customers are respectfully asked to wear swimming costumes at all times. Short prayers are offered in the chapel but there is no church service on Sundays. Concerts are occasionally arranged in the chapel. The maritime Helsinki is the biggest city in Finland and home for several buildings designed by Alvar Aalto. It also contains a wide range of other Finnish architecture from different centuries and decades.
Born in the small rural municipality of Kuortane, Alvar Aalto graduated as an architect in 1921 from the Technical University of Helsinki. In 1923, he established his first office in Jyväskylä, carrying the grandiose name “Arkkitehtuuri-ja monumentaalitaiteen toimisto” (Office of Architectural and Monumental Art). The office first moved to Turku and from there ultimately to Helsinki in the early 1930s.
Earlier in his career, Aalto had participated in several major architectural competitions in Helsinki, such as for the Parliament building and Olympic Stadium.
Designed in tandem with his wife Aino Aalto, also an architect, the family’s home was completed in Munkkiniemi in Helsinki in 1936. At that time, the Munkkiniemi area was not yet officially a part of Helsinki. The Aalto house now serving as a home museum was also designed to have a studio wing for use by the architectural office. Aalto knew the area well: as an example, in the early 1930s he designed a residential area (which never materialised) for the M.G. Stenius company in Munkkiniemi. The housing area designed for the employees of the National Pensions Institute were, in turn, completed in Munkkiniemi in 1954.
A new building was built in 1955 in Munkkiniemi near Aalto’s home to serve the needs of the expanding architectural office. Alvar Aalto’s studio is now the head office of the Alvar Aalto Foundation and a popular attraction among architectural travellers.
Several buildings designed by Alvar Aalto have been erected in the Helsinki region over the years. The head office of the National Pensions Institute and Enso-Gutzeit Co. Headquarters with their interiors were designed with great care down to the minutest detail for the needs of demanding clients. The centre of Helsinki houses buildings open to the public, such as the Rautatalo Office Building and the Academic Bookstore as well as Restaurant Savoy, which has kept its original interior from 1937 designed jointly by Aino and Alvar Aalto.
The House of Culture was completed near the centre of Helsinki in 1958. You can get to explore this building with a rich history and still used for versatile concerts and other cultural events during guided tours.
In 1959, the City Executive Board of Helsinki commissioned Alvar Aalto to draw up a plan for the central Kamppi-Töölönlahti area. Aalto outlined a new monumental centre for Helsinki, but ultimately only a small portion of the plans were brought to fruition – the Finlandia Hall is the only building of the row of cultural buildings planned along the Töölönlahti bay that was ever built.
The Finlandia Hall was designed as a conference and concert venue, and it is one of the last buildings designed by Aalto’s office. The Finlandia Hall was designed in 1967 to 1971 and 1973 to 1975. Alvar Aalto died in 1976, soon after the Finlandia Hall was ready. This building can be visited on guided tours and in conjunction with various events.

An Art-Nouveau Architectural Tour Of Helsinki
The Art-Nouveau movement at the turn of the 20th century coincided with a time when Helsinki was being built up and modernised. The style has become so ingrained in national consciousness that it has even influenced modern Scandinavian design. Here are some of the best examples of fin de siècle building design – most are in close proximity to each other or can be reached by tram.
Central railway station.
Most likely the first sight you will see when arriving in Helsinki is the train station, completed in 1914 by architect Eliel Saarinen. Since it serves over 200,000 commuters every day, it has become the most recognisable building in all of Finland. It was even chosen as one of the world’s most beautiful railway stations by the BBC . Most notable of all are the two sets of male guardian figures holding circular beacons on the building’s exterior, who have been given the local nicknames of ‘the stone men’ or ‘the ball guys’.
National Theatre
National Museum of Finland
About ten minutes’ walk from the city centre is the National Museum, which boasts a strong Finnish influence, both inside and outside. The iron-topped tower, tinged green with age, is built in the style of medieval churches and castles, while the ceiling of the entrance hall displays paintings of scenes from the Kalevala, Finland’s national epic poem.
Vltava Restaurant
A good place to stop for lunch on an architectural tour is the Vltava Czech restaurant, which is also next to the train station. It is located in a jugend building, whose origin and year of opening are unknown, but it is protected by the Finnish National Board of Antiquities. Before the restaurant opened, it previously served as a Finnair terminal and a cargo building for the state railway service.
University of Helsinki Student Union
Opened as the House of the Nations in 1910, this building originally hosted some of the student nations of the University of Helsinki. Today, it holds the university’s student union. The other nearby student nation buildings, particularly the Nylands Nation building, are also worth seeing.
Helsinki Workers’ House
This building was designed by Karl Lindahl and opened up in 1908 as a conference centre and leisure facility for Helsinki’s working class population, although today it mostly serves as a hotel and event space. It is notable for its large grey granite stones, intended to appear castle-like, and its rounded corners. Art-Nouveau chandeliers dating from 1919 designed by Lindahl are still visible in the Congress Hall. The building even has deep historical significance as it served as the headquarters of the Reds during the Finnish Civil War of 1918.
Kallio Church
Kallio is today known mostly for its younger population and street art, yet it still hosts many gems of the Art-Nouveau period. Most notable of all is Kallio Church, which stands atop the hill in the notable Helsinki grey granite, with a tall tower, green roof, and rounded front entrance. Today it serves the district as a Lutheran church and concert venue.

Last night my best friend and I were lucky enough to see Architecture in Helsinki live at a regional music festival. The entire crowd went wild when they took the stage and the sun set, leading us into a wonderful night of synthpop and psychedelic tunes.
I was excited to see two main vocalists throughout the show, although the female vocals were a little weak compared to their studio sound. The band was on point throughout the show, though, even during the more difficult synthesizer solos and drum sets. They were very high energy throughout the set, and they all danced and jammed out to every single song.
This was even more evident during their more psychedelic tracks like Contact High, where their movements and dancing were tied directly to the ups and down in the song's tempo. This was definitely a treat for any concert-going psychonauts, but it was also very enjoyable for the rest of us! The crowd was very tame and I didn't get anything spilled on my new coat - no injuries, either! There was a mosh pit at the front for a few songs, but it didn't really seem appropriate given their songs and content. Their energy is contagious and I will definitely be looking more into their music and upcoming live shows.
