Johan Cruijff ArenA

Amsterdam ArenA

One of Europe’s first large modern stadiums and still an icon in world football.

Club: AFC Ajax | Opening: 1996 | Capacity: 53,748 seats

History and description

The Johan Cruijff ArenA, previously called Amsterdam ArenA, was built between 1993 and 1996. It replaced Ajax’s previous home De Meer , which, with a capacity of 19,000 seats, had become too small for the club.

The Amsterdam ArenA officially opened on 14 August 1996 with a match between Ajax and AC Milan (0-3). The first goal in the new arena was scored by Dejan Savicevic. Total construction costs had amounted to €96 million.

The Amsterdam ArenA was the first football stadium in Europe with a retractable roof. It takes about 20 minutes to open or close the roof.

Shortly after the opening, it turned out that the stadium design had not accounted for good grass growing conditions, and as a result the pitch had to get renewed up to 5 times a year. These problems were later resolved with the installation of innovative grass growing technology, consisting of a combination of lamps, wind turbines, and water sprinklers.

The Johan Cruijff ArenA counts with a total of 2,229 business seats and a further 820 seats in sky boxes. The stands are among the steepest in Europe, with the second tier having an angle of 37 degrees.

In 1998, the stadium hosted the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Juventus (1-0), and in 2013 the Europa League final  between Chelsea and Benfica (2-1).

The Amsterdam ArenA was one of the playing venues of the Euro 2000 championships, hosting three group match, a quarter-final, and the semi-final between Holland and Italy (0-0).

The stadium has been chosen to be one of the playing venues of the Euro 2020 tournament, which is played across different countries. For this, the stadium got refurbished resulting in larger concourses and a new facade.

How to get to the Johan Cruijff ArenA

The Johan Cruijff ArenA is located in a modern office park in the south-east of Amsterdam, approximately 10 kilometres from the city centre.

The stadium is best reached by train or metro . Train station Bijlmer ArenA lies next to the stadium and can be reached in 15 minutes from Amsterdam Central Station. There is very regular service.

The metro takes only little longer and stops at the same station as well as station Strandvliet/ArenA that lies on the north side of the stadium. Take metro 54 from Amsterdam Central Station, or any of the stops in Amsterdam city centre. Metro 50 connects the stadium with southern and western parts of the city (e.g. Amsterdam Zuid station).

Address: ArenA Boulevard 1, 1101 AX Amsterdam

Eat, drink, and sleep near the Johan Cruijff ArenA

The Johan Cruijff ArenA is part of an entertainment and shopping complex, which includes a large cinema and two of Holland’s principal concert venues (the Ziggo Dome and Afas Live ). There are also a few places to get some (fast) food or have a drink, though options remain rather limited.

Recently, a few new hotels have opened near the Amsterdam ArenA, which include a Hampton by Hilton , the futuristically shaped Fletcher Hotel , and the Jaz Hotel . If arriving by car, the road-side and affordable Bastion Deluxe Hotel is a decent option, though you do need to catch a metro to get to the arena. Click here for an overview of hotels near the Amsterdam ArenA.

Of course, most will prefer to stay closer to Amsterdam’s lively city centre .

Ajax Tickets

Tickets for Ajax games can be bought online .

If tickets remain available, these can usually also be bought at the ticket windows of the Johan Cruijff ArenA on the day of the match, though recently Ajax have been selling out well in advance.

Expect to pay €25.00 for a seat behind the goal and between €30.00 and €50.00 for a seat at one of the sides for a regular match. Prices get increased for the games against Feyenoord and PSV.

Ajax occasionally require possession of an Ajax Club Card to buy match tickets, but most matches go on general sale. There is a separate ticket portal for foreigners to buy tickets.

Johan Cruijff ArenA Stadium Tours

The Johan Cruijff ArenA offers guided tours that include the press room, mixed zone, VIP areas, and dressing rooms. The tour lasts about 60 to 75 minutes and are in English and Dutch.

Tours run every half an hour on weekdays and every 20 minutes on the weekend. You can check the latest schedule here . On the weekend, it is also possible to follow a self-guided tour, which allows you to follow a route around the stadium at your own pace.

The tour costs €16.95. Bookings are not required, but can be made online .

The Arena has 2 very big acts to follow after the old Olympic Stadion in the city and the smaller Meer stadium were no longer used by Ajax. The Olympic Stadion in particular was part of the fabric of Amsterdam West and was so atmospheric on big European nights and matches v Feijenoord. Of course the Arena has all the modern facilities, but it has a certain sterility. It is a modern bowl with each side identical. The stadium was built as part of a new out of town development, part of a kind of ‘concrete jungle’. Being outside Amsterdam it feels somewhat cut off from the city. I believe they want to increase the capacity, but this will not improve the architectural character.

One of my favourite stadiums! It stands out as it is very colourful. The tiers are very steep but it is defenietely worth a visit. Amsterdam itself is very friendly city and i would recommend it to everybody.

There are hotels in the Amsterdam ArenA , e.g. the recently opened and remarkable Fletcher hotel.

Another note: if you find the Amsterdam Central station area already ‘seedy’ at night I’d suggest to stay away from Amsterdam at all. It sure is a messy area because of the many construction sites (new subway line, car and bicycle tunnels, renewal of the Central station, new bus station) but it is a very safe area and not only because it’s heavily patrolled by police and security teams.

Date visited: 29 October 2011

We joined the World of Ajax tour in October 2011. After having checked the Amsterdam Arena website for opening times, we arrived shortly before one of the given departures. As it was a Saturday afternoon there were already a lot of participants waiting and an estimated 50 people joined our tour, which was a lot.

The tour started at pitch-level with the possibility to have your photo taken by a professional photographer. No visit to the dugouts though. We then moved to the press room, where our guide held a fake press conference with some of the tour’s participants.

We subsequently went up the stadium to see the view from the second tier. All the time there was ample time to take photos, and at the second tier some opportunity to walk around the stands. The guide provided background information in Dutch and in English.

As the group was very large, probably too large, moving around the stadium took a lot of time, and one had to wait quite a lot. The guide was friendly, but spoke rather slowly, probably to facilitate the many non-native English speakers, but this added to a feeling of slight tedium.

Possibly the guide could have provided a bit more background information, or spiced things up with some interesting facts. The tour included relatively few parts of the stadium, less than in most tours, and it certainly would have been nice to see the dugouts, players’ tunnel, or VIP boxes. And to have the dressing rooms included in the standard tour.

The stadium is impressive enough to make it a decent experience, especially if your primary aim is to make photos, however the feeling remains that there is more potential than the current tour offers.

Johan Cruijff ArenA Tour Reviews

Here are some reviews to help you plan before taking the Johan Cruijff ArenA Tour.

Lots to see

From the time we entered to when we left, it was a great experience. The staff were friendly and very helpful – when we went around we did the self tour. However, in every area there was someone to tell you about the room you were in. One particular lad, who was in the away dressing room, was spectacular!! He and my husband could have talked football forever, he even caught up with us to give us more information about the museum. You are not rushed – you go at your own pace and even if you are not a football fan it was a good experience. Reasonably priced compared to other clubs we have been to- lots to see

Vin2308, Tripadvisor

A well-run, overall nice place to be!

Our tour guide was genuinely incredible; the way he so easily accommodated both the English and Dutch speaking members of the group was so impressive. It was clear that he had a passion for Ajax and knew so much about worldwide football in general. It was a really well informed tour; as someone who isn’t a football fan myself I only went as it was my boyfriend’s birthday present and I still found myself enjoying every second. Just a well run – overall nice place to be!

Eve, Tripadvisor

A knowledgeable, humorous guide

Nice stadium tour, the guide was very knowledgeable and pretty funny. Clearly a true Ajax fan but also knows lots about UK and worldwide football. The stadium is nice; the museum is quite small but interesting. The area around the stadium is pretty cool with bars, restaurants and shops.

Plattegrond Stadiontour

Are you coming to the Johan Cruijff ArenA for a Stadium Tour soon and do you have a question about your visit? Below are the frequently asked questions with answers about visiting the stadium.

No, at this moment there aren't any rules or measures.

Stadiumtour

For opening hours, we would like to refer you to the webshop, which is always up to date for all Tours.

All Stadium Tours start in the main building at entrance E, next to the Ajax fanshop and the restaurant.

A Kidstour last 2 hours, including 30 minutes of football. The Kidstour is only offered in Dutch.

Our guides all speak Dutch and English. If you would like to receive the information in your own language during the tour. You can do that by using the AudioGuide. It can be heard in Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

We would like to refer you to the webshop where you can find the prices for each product.

When you book in advance you know for sure that there is a spot for you. If you buy a ticket in the stadium, it can be crowded and you can’t skip the waiting line.

We are a cash-free stadium, therefore it is not possible to buy a ticket with cash.

If you are unable to book the tour of your choice on a specific day or time, it may be that it is completely sold out or that there are no tours due to an event taking place on this day.

If you are really unable to attend, we can adjust the date and time. You can send an Email and share your booking details with us. We will send you the new tickets by Email: [email protected] .

We send the tickets via the Close app, after downloading the app your tickets are visible.

You will receive a lot of information related to your visit via the Close app, and your ticket will be visible in the app. You can also use the app during your Stadium Tour and receive great offers afterwards and view your free digital photo there. This ensures that your experience will be even better.

During the tour we use escalators. We use stairs towards the field and to the press stand.

The Classic Tour is always without a guide. Do you prefer a stadium tour with a guide? You can book the Guided Tour or the VIP Tour.

You can get off at Station Bijlmer ArenA, from there you can easily walk to the stadium. You can also use Wizzymaps which is visible in the Close app.

You can park in P1 (the Transferium), under the stadium. From there you walk towards main entrance E where the Stadium Tours start.

During the tour we make frequent use of Escalators/stairs . We would therefore like to ask you to contact us after your booking so we can schedule a guide for you. This can be done by sending an Email to [email protected] .

You walk independently through the stadium along all highlights, along the way there are guides who will tell you everything about the spaces. You can ask them any questions, or have a small chat, they want you to have the best Experience in the Stadium and are always there for you.

During the tour, taking photos and videos is allowed, only with your phone or a small handheld camera. Large cameras are not allowed in the stadium.

The dressing room of Ajax is not always available. Like on Ajax match days, the players make use of this space. Also on match days that Ajax plays away, the dressing room cannot be accessible.

You should bring your own wheelchair, we only facilitate this for emergencies.

At the end of the Stadium Tour you will see all the prizes that Ajax has won, you can take your time for this and then walk to the fan shop.

This is not possible, because we use escalators and stairs during the tour. Also it is not allowed to take a buggy into the stadium due to safety rules.

After downloading the Close app you receive a link, you can view the photos at the link. You can also check this link here for your photos.

We offer different Stadium Tours. In the Webshop you can see all products that we currently offer. The most common tour is the Classic Tour. The VIP Tour is an exclusive tour with only 12 places.

A VIP Tour lasts 2 hours, including a drink in the skybox to relax.

You can certainly come along, because children are not allowed to follow the Stadium Tour independently.

The Kidstour is only given in Dutch.

The VIP Tour has room for 12 people, so we keep the tour exclusive.

Look carefully at the timeslot of your ticket and where you are going first. The timeslots are on your E-ticket and the tickets will be scanned at the entry.

The entrance for the Heineken Experience is on the street side, at Stadshouderskade 78 in Amsterdam.

We offer Innovation tours, these are exclusive Tours that are tailer-made and only for groups. If you are interested in the Innovation Tour, you can Email [email protected] .

You can book for groups in the webshop. If you want to go with a class or football team, we would like to advise you to send an Email first to [email protected] .

This is possible in the webshop. You will receive a promotion code that you can use to book a Stadium Tour. A gift card can only be used for the Stadium Tour.

You can get a 10% discount in the fanshop and at the FEBO by showing a valid ticket.

You can eat and drink in the FEBO restaurant, which is located next to the main entrance where the Stadium Tour starts.

Amsterdam Arena stylised as the Amsterdam ArenA is the home stadium of famous Dutch club, Amsterdamsche Football Club Ajax. Constructed over a two year period at an estimated cost of €140 million, the 53,052 capacity ground opened in 1996 and is famous for having a retractable roof.

Ajax Stadium Guide

Johan cruyff arena history.

Amsterdam Arena was first opened on the 14th August 1996 with a friendly match held between Ajax and European rivals A.C Milan after a construction period of three years. Costing approximately €140 million Ajax’s stadium had its genesis in the city’s bid to host the 1992 Summer Olympics with the original designs of the ground featuring an athletics track. After Amsterdam lost the bid to Barcelona in 1986 plans were shelved until the early 1990s.

With Ajax having to host its more important matches at the Olympisch Stadion, there was a growing realisation that the current De Meer Stadion with its capacity of 19,000 was too small for a club of Ajax’s size. Working in conjunction with Government of Amsterdam, Ajax redesigned the stadium to include a retractable roof, improved public transport infrastructure and no athletics track. The revamped design was green-lighted almost immediately in 1992, with construction beginning the following year.

Designed by architect Rob Schuurman, the 53,052 capacity ground was designated to host the 1998 Champions League final with Real Madrid defeating Juventus by a single goal to nil. Seen as a dry run to the Euro 2000s, the Amsterdam Arena proceeded to host five matches during the tournament including three group games, one quarter final and one semi which featured Netherlands.

Today, the Amsterdam arena continues to be recognized as one of the premier football stadiums in the world, with UEFA designating the stadium as a five star stadium. Hosting numerous pop concerts including One Direction and The Rolling Stones, the last major match to be held at the ground was a final between Benfica and Chelsea F.C for the 2013 Europa League title, with the English side triumphing on this occasion.

Johan Cruyff Arena: AFC Ajax / Netherlands

ajax ground tour

By Alf van Beem (Own work) [ CC0 ], via Wikimedia Commons

Johan Cruyff ArenA (formerly Amsterdam ArenA until 2018) opened in 1996 and is the largest arena in all of the Netherlands. It took three years to build and cost around €140 million. Over the years since it opened it has been used to host football games – specifically for Ajax and the Dutch national side – as well as American football matches and concerts. The surface is grass and there is a retractable roof that can be moved to cover the pitch if the weather turns.

The ArenA is the home of Ajax and has been ever since it opened. It has also hosted numerous tournaments such as the Champions League final in 1998, the final of the Europa League in 2013 and the European Championships in 2000. It was also be one of the venues for the 2020 European Championships which was held in numerous countries throughout the continent.

Johan Cruyff Arena Seating Plan and Where to Sit

ajax ground tour

Owing to the fact that it opened in the late 1990s, Johan Cruyff ArenA follows the modern European approach to stadiums that sees it have a bowl of continuous seating going around the perimeter of the pitch, as opposed to the more ‘English Style’ of a different stand on each side of the playing surface. Here’s some detail on each section:

  • North Stand – The North Stand is behind one of the goals and it contains the away section. Like the rest of the stadium it has two tiers that are below one half of the retractable roof.
  • South Stand – Directly opposite the North Stand and also sitting under half of the retractable roof, the South Stand is home to the club’s most passionate supporters.
  • East Stand – Running along one side of the pitch, the East Stand is opposite the Main Stand of the ground.
  • West Stand – This is the Main Stand of the stadium and houses things such as the dug-outs, the changing rooms and the players’ tunnel. There are also executive boxes separating the two tiers of seating.

Netherlands Ticket Prices

Similar to Ajax, the Dutch national team plays matches against teams from all over the world. It plays both unimportant friendly games and crucial qualifying matches for major tournaments such as the European Championships and the World Cup. Ticket prices will vary and the individual match ticket costs are decided by the country’s football associations.

How To Get Netherlands Tickets

You can buy tickets for Dutch games through the Netherlands Football Association, the same group that decides the ticket prices. They’re the people you’ll want to get in touch with if you want to watch Oranje play live.

Where to Buy

  • Ticket Compare

AFC Ajax Ticket Prices

As is the case with most major clubs throughout Europe, the amount you’ll pay for tickets to see AFC Ajax play depends on who it is that the match is against, where about you’d like to sit and how old you are. If you’re an adult hoping to see a middle of the range match then you can expect to pay between €20 and €70.

How To Get AFC Ajax Tickets

In order to watch Ajax football matches you normally have to be a club ‘member’. There are numerous official locations throughout Amsterdam where you’ll be able to buy tickets including AKO newsagents in places such as Schiphol Plaza. You can also get tickets from the club’s official website and over the phone.

Getting To Johan Cruyff Arena

As well as being the capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam is also the country’s most populous city. Consequently there are numerous ways to get there, of which the following are some methods:

Train – A train journey from London to Amsterdam will take between six and seven hours to complete its journey. You’ll go from St. Pancras to Brussels, Brussels to Antwerp and then Antwerp to Rotterdam. From there it’s just a short journey to Amsterdam-Centraal.

Once in the city you’ll want to get a train or the Metro 54 to Bijlmer Station. That journey will take about twenty minutes and then you’ll have a five minute walk to the ground.

Bus – Buses 29, 158, 174, 177 and 178 will all take you to Station Bijmer Arena station where you can get a metro towards Arena Boulevard.

Car – If you’re wanting to drive then the A10 ring road will get you onto the A2 South towards Utrecht. Get off at the Transferium and that’s where you’ll be able to park your car, too.

By Air – Schiphol is easiest the largest airport that serves the Dutch capital, so that is where most flights will head into. It’s just over ten miles away so is significantly more convenient than Rotterdam’s The Hague Airport, based about 55 miles from the centre of Amsterdam.

Taxi – If you’d like to get a taxi from Amsterdam’s Centraal station out to the ground then expect to pay something in the region of €30 and the journey will take around twenty minutes.

Parking Near Johan Cruyff Arena

The Transferium is where you’ll want to go if you’re looking for parking. It’s right next to the ground and there are plenty of spaces.

Johan Cruyff Arena Hotels

Given it’s the capital of Holland and a notorious hotspot for hen dos and stag parties, it’s a fair assumption that you’ll be able to find a hotel to stay in whatever your budget range. Here are some to consider:

Courtyard Amsterdam Arena Atlas - £50+

Jaz Amsterdam - £70+

Fletcher Hotel Amsterdam - £90+

Pubs and bars near johan cruyff arena.

If there are a number of hotels to choose from in the city then the bars are even more plentiful. Here are some of the best places you’ll want to head to for a pre or post-match pint:

Satellite Sports Café

Three sisters pub, grolsch pub.

Though it was built in the mid-1990s, Amsterdam ArenA is an up-to-date location. Given then it’s the country’s largest stadium they do well to ensure that it keeps up with all of the mod-cons. There are plenty of places to have a drink or get a bite to eat and the views are pretty good from everywhere.

Hospitality

ajax ground tour

Though hospitality packages are different for Ajax games and Dutch national matches, the facilities remain the same. If you want to watch games in more exclusive environments than just a standard seat then get in touch with the specific club who are organising the matches.

The main hospitality experiences are to be found in the stadium’s Skyrooms and the Skylounge. Here’s you’ll find the perfect mix of the exquisite comforts you’d expect for high level business meetings as well as exceptional views of the football pitch. Café John is also open for hospitality experiences and that has an English pub like feel, so is better for more relaxed meetings and get togethers. The Tunnel Club also allows you to watch the players in the tunnel via a glass wall in the final moments before the game begins.

Private Hire

Amsterdam ArenA has a whole host of amazing rooms available for private hire for conferences and the likes. The rooms all have different themes, so you’ll have to investigate which one is right for you. The various rooms you may find yourself in include Amsterdam ’72, which gas a full length balcony overlooking it and can be used for seminars and dinners; Athene ’87, which can be used for conferences and is more industrial in its appearance; Café Johan, which is like an English pub and has a view of the pitch and Glasgow ’72 that is essentially a large Skybox.

Stadium Tours & Museum

There is a stadium tour that lasts for an hour and a quarter. It is about as comprehensive as tours can get, taking in the likes of the dressing room, the players’ tunnel and the press area. You’ll also get to go into the Gallery of Fame, which is Ajax’s equivalent of a museum. Tours run every day and the only major difference is that you can’t visit the dressing rooms on match days. There are no tours on the 27th of April, the 25th and 26th of December and New Year’s Day. Tours cost €18.00 for adults and €11.00 for children.

About Netherlands

ajax ground tour

Under the control of the Royal Netherlands Football Association, the Netherlands national team are known as Het Nederlands Elftal, or the Dutch Eleven. They’re also called ‘Oranje’ in honour of the House of Orange-Nassau and the play in an orange kit accordingly. In football circles the team is referred to by some as Holland, though this in fact incorrect. The Netherlands team has played in more World Cup finals without winning the competition than any other team in football; a record that no one associated with the country is happy to have against their name.

They have finished second in the tournament three times, losing in the final in 1974 to West Germany, to Argentina in 1978 and to Spain in 2010. The Dutch football team may have only won one major tournament in their history in the form of the 1988 European Championship, but they have been praised for their footballing style over the years. In the 1970s Rinus Michels’s team, led on the pitch by Johan Cruyff, invented what was known as Total Football’. The ‘carousel’ style of football impressed the world when it was played in the 1974 World Cup.

If Ajax played in England the likelihood is that the ‘AFC’ would stand for Association Football Club. As it is, however, it means Amsterdamsche Football Club, reflective of the fact that Ajax are a club based in the capital city of the Netherlands. Named after the hero from Greek mythology for reasons no one really understands, Ajax are the most successful club in Dutch football. They have, to date, won the top-flight title thirty-three times and have picked up eighteen NKVB Cups.

Since its creation in 1956 the club has never played outside the top division in the Netherlands and forms one third of what is known as ‘The Big Three’. The other two teams are Feyenoord and PSV and between them they have dominated Dutch football. As well as ruling the roost in Holland, Ajax have also impressed across the European continent. They were Europe’s seventh most successful club in the 20th century, having won the European Cup four times, including back-to-back titles in 1971, 1972 and 1973. They’ve won the European Cup Winners’ Cup and the UEFA Cup once apiece.

Johan Cruyff Arena History

When the International Olympic Committee began to invite bids for the hosting of the 1992 Summer Olympics Amsterdam was one of six different cities to make an application. A new Olympic Stadium was designed in 1986 as part of the bid but when the Olympics was awarded to Barcelona the idea was shelved. The following year the Amsterdam Sports City Foundation came up with an idea for a 55,000 seat capacity stadium in the country. Three years after that a new design was created that took ideas from both of the previously suggested stadia.

It was around the same time that AFC Ajax began to consider moving to a new stadium, with their then home – De Meer Stadium – unable to answer demand for those wanting to watch the club’s football games. For the best part of a decade the club had played any important matches in the Olympisch Stadion. They looked at the previous stadium designs and decided to move forward with it with a slight alteration that removed the running track. City government approved the plans on the proviso that the ground’s location was changed and in November of 1993 work began on its construction.

The stadium is often used as a concert venue, with the biggest names in the world visiting to perform for the evening, including the likes of Madonna, Bon Jovi, Beyonce, Tina Turner, and Michael Jackson. This despite the acoustics being famously terrible.

Future Developments

After the revelation that the ArenA would be used to host matches in the 2020 European Championships numerous mass renovations were planned for the stadium. These included the enlarging of the Upper and Lower tiers to have increased capacities. A new facade was added and the stadium also changed shape slightly.
