Canada's Taylor Pendrith wins Byron Nelson for 1st PGA Tour victory

Richmond hill, ont., native, 32, secures top spot in 74th career pga tour start.

Social Sharing

Taylor Pendrith tried his best to ignore Ben Kohles' final-hole meltdown, focusing on the eagle putt that the Canadian thought he might have to make even to force a playoff as he walked toward the 18th green.

Several stunning minutes later, a 3-footer for birdie gave Pendrith his first PGA Tour victory.

Kohles overtook Pendrith with birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 for a one-shot lead, then bogeyed the 18th after hitting his second shot into greenside rough. Already in shock following two chips from the rough — the second with his feet in a bunker — Kohles missed a 6-foot putt that would have forced a playoff.

"Wasn't really trying to pay attention to what they were doing, although it really mattered, obviously," Pendrith said. "I feel for Ben. He played really, really good today, especially down the stretch. I've been on the other side of it a couple times, and it sucks. But it's golf. It's a hard game."

Pendrith shot 4-under 67 for a 23-under 261 total at the TPC Craig Ranch. The 32-year-old won in his 74th career PGA Tour start.

Canada's Taylor Pendrith wins 1st PGA Tour title in shocking 72nd hole plot twist at Byron Nelson

Playing just north of his birthplace of Dallas, Kohles shot 66 to finish a stroke back. The 34-year-old who plays out of North Carolina is winless in 68 starts.

"Honestly, hadn't seen any rough like that all week," said Kohles, who moved to North Carolina when he was 10. "Just needed a little bit more umph on it. Did so many good things this week, and I'm just going to keep reminding myself of that and try to get myself back in this position."

Alex Noren, a Swedish player also seeking a first PGA Tour victory, was another stroke back. He wowed the crowd on the stadium hole at the par-3 17th with a tee shot to 2 1/2 feet, but followed that birdie with a par knowing he probably needed an eagle on 18. Noren shot 65 and was alone in third at 21 under.

Pendrith, the third-round leader, and Kohles were separated by just one shot or tied most of the day. After Kohles made a 20-footer to take the lead on 17, Pendrith's par putt rolled all the way around the cup and went in.

"It just curled in, that putt on the last second there, which was unreal just to give me a chance," said Pendrith, who set it up with a chip from an awkward stance with his heels hanging over the lip of a bunker, after saving par with another testy putt at the par-4 16th.

The victory qualified Pendrith for the PGA Championship in two weeks and next year's Masters. He's also in the next three $20 million US signature events, starting next week with the Wells Fargo championship. Kohles and Noren also played their way into Wells Fargo with their Nelson showings.

With Wells Fargo and the PGA coming in the next two weeks, just three of the top 30 in the world ranking were in the field.

Jordan Spieth, the highest at No. 20, missed the cut for just the second time in 12 appearances at his hometown event. Defending champion Jason Day (22nd) and Tom Kim (23rd) didn't contend, with Day finishing one shot behind Kim at 9 under.

Jake Knapp, the second-round leader who three years ago was working as a security guard in his home state of California, shot 70 to finish at 19 under. Knapp and Wallace were the only players in the top eight with a previous PGA Tour win.

The start of the final round was pushed back 2 1/2 hours because of overnight rain, and pairings turned into threesomes going off both tees with the players allowed to lift, clean and place shots in the fairway.

Wallace appeared to start a charge by chipping in for birdie at 12, the toughest hole of the week, and getting another birdie at the par-4 13th. A three-putt bogey on the par-3 15th stalled him out.

Journeyman tale

Rafael Campos, a 13-year journeyman from Puerto Rico who has spent most of his career on satellite tours, birdied five of the first six holes starting on the back nine to make the turn at 29.

The 36-year-old cooled off on his second nine before making a 48-foot putt from off the green for eagle on the par-5 ninth for a 63 that put him at 18 under.

Taiga Semikawa, a 23-year-old from Japan playing on a sponsor exemption, also finished at 18 after a 64.

Kris Kim, a 16-year old amateur making his PGA Tour debut, had a rough finish as the youngest to play a final round on tour in 10 years.

Playing his final nine on the front, the son of South Korean-born former LPGA Tour player Ji-Hyun Suh had four bogeys and shot 73 to finish 6 under.

Kim, who is from England, played on a sponsor exemption from the South Korean company and tournament title sponsor CJ Group.

PGA Championship 2023 recap: Scottie Scheffler in three-way tie at top after second round

who's leading the pga tour this week

A competitive opening round yielded a crowded list of names atop the leaderboard as the second round of the 105th PGA Championship got underway Friday at  Oak Hill Country Club  in Rochester, New York.

As the winds began to pick up in the afternoon, LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau's one-shot clubhouse lead (4-under 66 Thursday) withstood an early charge from Justin Rose. However, Scottie Scheffler opened his second round with a pair of birdies to take over the tournament lead at 5-under. He ended the day in a tie with Corey Conners and Viktor Hovland. Only nine men finished 36 holes under par and the cut came in at 5-over.

Warmer temperatures, accompanied by rain and gusty winds, could lead to slightly higher scores in the second round. The top 70 players and ties will make the cut and advance to the weekend − with the ultimate prize, the Wanamaker Trophy, being awarded on Sunday.

USA TODAY Sports will provide the latest news, updates, analysis and more throughout the day. Follow along.

Scheffler, Conners and Hovland tied for the lead

It’s getting crowded at the top of the leaderboard.

Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners and Viktor Hovland are all tied for the lead through the second round at 5-under. Scheffler was the outright leader at 6-under, but he finished No. 18 with a bogey.  Hovland, on the other hand, jumped up the board following a birdie on No. 18.

Brooks Koepka sits in fifth place after an impressive back nine. He shot five birdies, three pars and one bogey to finish the round 2-under.

Only 10 players are under par. The projected cut line is 5-over.

Jon Rahm fires off three straight birdies to get above cut line

Rahm struggled to get it going during the second round, but he’s appeared to find his stride. After registering a bogey on No. 12, Rahm responded by shooting three straight birdies on No. 13, No. 14 and No. 15 to bring him to three-over for the tournament.

The world No. 1 and 2023 Masters champion now finds himself on the right side of the projected cut line of five-over with three more holes to go in the round.

Scottie Scheffler back atop the leaderboard with pair of birdies

Scottie Scheffler shot back-to-back birdies on No. 14 and No. 15 to close in on Corey Conners’ two-stroke lead. Now, Scheffler and Conners are tied atop the leaderboard at 6-under for the tournament. Conners had the opportunity to take the lead outright on No. 6, but he missed a birdie putt.

Meanwhile, world No. 1 and 2023 Masters champion Jon Rahm is in danger of missing the weekend. He is currently 6-over, one stroke above the projected cut of 5-over.

PGA Championship leaderboard in Round 2: Corey Conners leads

With the action heating up at Oak Hill, let's take a brief look at the standings:

Corey Conners currently leads the pack at 6-under. Through 11 holes, he has hit three birdies and shot for par on the rest.

Viktor Hovland is tied for second place at 4-under, most recently birdieing on No. 10. Time will tell if his bogey on No. 3 will cost him. Scottie Scheffler started with two consecutive birdies and shot a bogey on No. 7. He is 1-under for the round.

Keegan Bradley is fourth at 4-under through his seven holes. He started off well with two birdies, but shot a bogey on No. 5.

Scottie Scheffler hits first bogey, falls behind Corey Conners on leaderboard

Scottie Scheffler’s bogey free run at the 2023 PGA Championship ended on No. 7. He hit into the bunker and hit a chip shot onto the green. He had the opportunity to knock in a putt for par but missed slightly left for his first bogey of the tournament. And it couldn't have come at a worse time. He fell to second place on the leaderboard at 4-under.

Corey Conners was hot on Scheffler’s trail and shot a birdie on No. 15 to take the lead at 5-under.

Scottie Scheffler surges into the lead at Oak Hill

After shooting the first bogey-free round in a major in his career on Thursday, 2022 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler moved into the lead early in Friday's second round of the PGA Championship with back-to-back birdies on his first two holes.

Scheffler began the day one stroke behind first-round leader Bryson DeChambeau, but two deadly accurate approach shots on the first and second holes led to a pair of short birdie putts that moved Scheffler to 5-under for the tournament. DeChambeau teed off about an hour later.

Entering this year's PGA, Scheffler had played 50 rounds in major championships, but had never completed one without at least one bogey. Dating back to the 2022 U.S. Open, Scheffler has been inside the top 10 of the leaderboard in nine of the last 12 major championship rounds.

Late-round drama for Phil Mickelson

Struggling to make the 36-hole cut, six-time major champion Phil Mickelson nearly committed a costly rules violation when he hit his tee shot on the sixth hole into the same swamp that caused Tom Kim so much trouble in Thursday's opening round.

After taking a drop but before hitting his third shot, Mickelson was stopped by a rules official who questioned the placement of the ball.

The 2021 PGA champion asserted that he should be allowed to take two clublengths of relief from the ball's flight path into the hazard. That would have left him a shot from the edge of the fairway. But after a second rules official was called in, it was determined that Mickelson was only entitled to one clublength, putting his ball in the first cut of the rough.

Hitting a fairway wood from 247 yards into the par 5, he missed the green to the left − flirting with the dangerous Allen Creek. The ball stuck in the rough and didn't kick into the water, but his chip came up short and rolled back down the ridge running through the middle of the green.

Mickelson eventually two-putted for double bogey, taking him from 3-over to 5-over par for the tournament – right on the projected cut line.

Crews at Oak Hill help save a family of ducks

With massive crowds arriving at Oak Hill Country Club — a typically serene setting — pardon a family of ducks for not understanding what all the buzz was about on Friday morning.

The ducks, which were settling in near the clubhouse at the storied course, needed to be whisked away during the second round of play at the PGA Championship.

A dozen ducklings were rounded up, but originally the family matriarch wasn’t willing to tag along. Eventually, they escorted their elder to the creek and the family swam away, giving a little space to the event’s patrons.

Justin Rose makes his move to the top

With first-round leader Bryson DeChambeau not scheduled to tee off until the afternoon, Englishman Justin Rose rode a hot start Friday morning to pull into a tie for the lead.

Rose, the 2013 U.S. Open champion and gold medalist at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, birdied three of his first seven holes in the second round to match DeChambeau at four under for the tournament.

After completing his opening round early Friday morning, Rose rolled in a double-breaking putt on No. 10 to start his second round, then holed a 20-footer for birdie on 12 and drained another lengthy birdie putt on 16 to grab a share of the lead.

He finished his opening nine with a bogey on 18 to drop one stroke off the pace.

Rose won his 11th PGA tour event at Pebble Beach in February. He has four top-10 finishes at the PGA and tied for 13th at Southern Hills last year.

Club pro Michael Block off to fast start, then struggles

The reigning PGA of America Professional Player of the Year got off to a quick start in Round 2 at Oak Hill.

Michael Block, the 46-year-old head professional at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, California, birdied his first hole of the day to move into a tie for second place behind leader Bryson DeChambeau. He then birded his third and fifth hole, before faltering.

Block found himself in the company of such notables as Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose (3-under after his first six holes today) and Scottie Scheffler early in the second round of the PGA Championship.

Block ended up shooting a second consecutive round of even-par 70 -- which he said was his goal -- ensuring that he'll make the 36-hole cut.

"Nothing can go wrong from this point forward," Block told ESPN's TV broadcast following his round. "I can't tell you how happy that makes me."

One of the endearing features of this major is that several spots in the field are reserved for club pros like Block -- and occasionally they make some noise, especially in the early rounds. PGATour.com notes Block has been named the Southern California PGA Player of the Year in nine of the last 10 years (2013-2022, with the exception being 2017). He’s also a past California State Open champion.

The last PGA Professional to finish among the top 40 for the entire championship was Steve Schneiter, who tied for 40th in 2005 at Baltusrol.

First round of PGA Championship officially complete

PGA Tour newcomer Eric Cole held the overnight lead after making it through 14 holes at 5-under-par during a weather-delayed opening round at Oak Hill. However, when he returned to the course early Friday, Cole found the water on the sixth hole and wound up with a double-bogey, dropping him a shot behind clubhouse leader Bryson DeChambeau.

Playing in his second career major, Cole finished with three consecutive pars to conclude his round of 3-under 67.

With the 33 other golfers − including Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Patrick Cantlay − who were left on the course as darkness suspended play Thursday finishing up, the first round is now in the books.

Two-time PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas shot a 2-over 72 as he began his title defense.

What is the weather forecast for Friday?

After the start of the first round was delayed by nearly two hours due to early morning frost, the forecast for Friday should be much improved.

The second round is scheduled to begin under cloudy skies with temperatures in the high-50s, according to weather.com. Temperatures will climb into the mid-70s around lunchtime, making for pleasant conditions in the afternoon.

DeChambeau dazzles in opening round

Bryson DeChambeau told reporters on Thursday he couldn't have drawn up a better round of golf, finishing his first 18 holes with a 4-under 66.

"It's a fantastic round of golf at Oak Hill. It's a prestigious place. Very difficult golf course," DeChambeau said . "Luckily, I was able to play some really good golf, hit a lot of fairways, did my job and made some putts. ... Figured out a couple things this week, and it certainly paid off today."

The 2020 U.S. Open champion hit nine of 14 fairways off the tee and 15 of 18 greens in regulation. He also averaged 347 yards per tee shot.

Rough round for Rahm

Coming in as one of the two favorites, Jon Rahm said during his press conference leading up to the 105th PGA Championship that he was looking to “ride the wave” of recent success, hoping to follow a pair of recent wins at the Genesis and the Masters with similar success in Western New York.

But the wave fizzled out on Thursday at Oak Hill Country Club.

Rahm finished the first round with a 6-over 76, a full 10 shots behind early leader Bryson DeChambeau when he finished.

Tom Kim goes viral after getting completely covered in mud

Oak Hill Country Club is known for Allen Creek running through the course.

It's a natural hazard intended to swallow golf balls ... not actual golfers. Tom Kim played the creek differently than most at the PGA Championship on Thursday.

Kim was told his ball crossed the water and that he could play the ball if he found it. He stepped in the swampy creek bed, sank like quicksand and was covered in mud .

"As soon as I went in, it was kind of sketch," Kim said in his post-round interview on ESPN. "It's a major championship I'm fighting for every single stroke. Then it got dark. Once my foot went in, there was no looking back."

Here’s who will win the PGA Championship, according to our staff

Mito Pereira, left, and Will Zalatoris during the third round of the 2022 PGA Championship.

getty images

Check in each day of this week’s PGA Championship for the unfiltered opinions of our writers and editors as they break down the hottest topic in the tournament, and join the conversation by tweeting us @golf_com .

Mito Pereira of Chile has the 54-hole lead at the 104th PGA Championship . At nine under, he’s three clear of two other players looking for their major titles: Matt Fitzpatrick and Will Zalatoris. Only three other players are within six of the lead: Cameron Young (-5), Abraham Ancer (-4) and Seamus Power (-3), while a trio of major winners lurk at two under (Justin Thomas, Bubba Watson and Stewart Cink ). Who wins on Sunday?

Zephyr Melton, assistant editor: Guillermo “Mito” Pereira. His ball striking has always been a strong suit, and he’s putting on a clinic at Southern Hills . There was a little hiccup midway through his Round 3, but three birdies coming home steadied the ship and gave Pereira a three-shot lead. Chile gets its first major winner on Sunday.

Tiger Woods of the United States walks to the tee during the third round of the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club on May 21, 2022 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Tiger Woods’ WD at PGA begs the question: What’s his path forward?

Jessica Marksbury, senior editor: I haven’t seen enough of Pereira’s play under pressure, so I’m going with Matt Fitzpatrick. He has the experience and the pedigree, with seven wins on the DP World Tour. Simply put, he’s been a very good player for a long time. Not only that, but he’s also quietly put together three consistently excellent rounds under par, in tough conditions. I think it’s his time.

Alan Bastable, executive editor: Pardon my laziness (hey, it’s Saturday night!), but just going to go ahead and cut-and-paste my sleeper pick from our staff picks column earlier this week: “Cameron Young isn’t playing like a ‘sleeper’ with a T2 and T3 in his past two starts — and on two very different golf courses (TPC Potomac and Harbour Town). But he is a player with whom casual fans are still not familiar. He will win a major, and likely soon. Crazy talent. No real weaknesses. Also, the smartest picker I know has been crowing about Young for months.” For all these reasons and more (love his composure), Young is my guy on Sunday.

Dylan Dethier, senior writer: Mito! He was already playing under his toughest-ever circumstances on Saturday and came out hot — plus he rebounded well. He seems well-equipped to start with a lead and hang on tight.

‘He’s fearless’: Mito Pereira’s college coach speaks about the man leading the PGA

Josh Berhow, managing editor: Cameron Young is the best player a ton of golf fans have never heard of. But he’s had a great year, and I’m not confident enough in the other contenders’ ability to go win this thing.

James Colgan, assistant editor: Man, not a ton of major championship experience at the top of this leaderboard, huh? It’s a dart throw, and of the options in contention, I like Zalatoris to get the job done. Had a furious final round at the Masters a year ago and already has a handful of major top-10s. Sunday, he’s primed for a breakthrough.

Josh Sens, senior writer: Before the tournament, a fine amateur player who has caddied for some of the best told me to take Mito Pereira, saying that the guy was playing great and would not shrink from the moment. I ignored that advice and picked Patrick Cantlay. Call me late to the game. And gimme Mito tomorrow. I’m a repentant convert.

2024 Wells Fargo Championship picks, predictions, odds, field: Golf expert likes Wyndham Clark at Quail Hollow

Sia nejad reveals his wells fargo championship 2024 picks, props and sleepers for this week's pga tour event in charlotte.

wyndham-clark.jpg

A renovated Quail Hollow Club will greet PGA Tour players this week when play begins in the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship beginning on Thursday at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte. After last year's tournament, the club closed for a few months to undergo a renovation. The project included redoing all the tees and greens, installing a new drainage system, and overhauling the bunkers. Quail Hollow is set to host next year's PGA Championship.

This week, three-time champion Rory McIlroy is the favorite in the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship odds at +650. Xander Schauffele is the +900 second choice in the Wells Fargo Championship 2024 field. Defending champion Wyndham Clark (+1600), Patrick Cantlay (+1800) and Max Homa (+2200) round out the top five choices. Before locking in any 2024 Wells Fargo Championship picks, make sure you  see the PGA Tour predictions and best bets from golf betting and fantasy expert Sia Nejad , considering the success he had picking the tournament last year.

Nejad specializes in betting and DFS in golf, among other sports. He's had incredible success in the outright and first-round leader markets and in betting head-to-head matchups. He also has been solid with his head-to-head matchups since last year's Charles Schwab Challenge, going 41-27-3 and returning 10.64 units over that span. That's a $1,064 profit for $100 bettors since May 2023. Nejad also nailed Clark, a 75-1 longshot, as the outright winner at the Wells Fargo Championship. In 2023, SportsLine debuted "The Early Wedge," and in the first three months of the show, he hit two first-round leaders and three outright winners.

Now, Nejad has turned his attention to the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship field and locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. See who they are at SportsLine .

Top 2024 Wells Fargo Championship expert picks

One surprise: Nejad is completely fading Tommy Fleetwood, even though he is one of the favorites at +2200. The 33-year-old from Southport, England, has eight international wins. Earlier this year, he won the Dubai Invitational on the DP World Tour by one stroke over, among others, McIlroy.

But while Fleetwood has had success internationally, he has yet to win on the PGA Tour in 134 career starts. "[He] has no business being +2200," Nejad told SportsLine. "He has great history at Quail Hollow, but he's shown no ability to close on the PGA Tour over his career and this is not the field for him to finally pull it off."

However, Nejad is high on the chances of Wyndham Clark, who is +1600 in the Wells Fargo Championship odds. Ranked No. 3 in the world, Clark has one win, two seconds and four top-10 finishes in 10 events this season. He hasn't played since finishing third in the RBC Heritage three weeks ago.

Nejad likes that Clark has excelled in all of the strokes gained metrics this year. He ranks second in strokes gained: total (1.780) behind only Scottie Scheffler. "The approach play hasn't been perfect, but he comes back to a place where he has won and he is notably unafraid of the big moments on Sundays," Nejad said.  See which other golfers to back at SportsLine .

How to make 2024 Wells Fargo Championship picks

Nejad has locked in his best bets for the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship and is backing several longshots, including one that is priced at more than +4000. This player "has spiked enough lately" and is a longshot who could surprise. You can see Nejad's PGA Tour picks only at SportsLine .

So which players should you target or avoid for the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship, and which player in the   Wells Fargo Championship 2024 field could bring a huge payday at more than +4000? Check out the odds below, then visit SportsLine to see Sia Nejad's top picks for the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship , all from the expert who is 41-27-3 on his last 71 head-to-head picks.
