Sidari, Corfu – What’s It Like?

Thinking of booking a trip to  Sidari on Corfu? Here’s what to expect from this versatile beach resort .

Where is it?

Sidari is on the western side of Corfu’s north coast , west of Roda and Acharavi.

What’s the vibe like?

Rock formations in Sidari.

Sidari is a popular beach resort known for its dramatic rock formations , turquoise seas, and beautiful sandy beaches.

The main attraction here is the Canal d’Amour , a picturesque rocky inlet with a legend attached. They say you’ll meet your soulmate if you swim all the way to the end of the ‘channel of love’.

These days plenty flock to the unique landscape for its photo opportunities. It’s a popular day trip attraction and features on many excursion itineraries.

The resort itself is small, low-rise and flat , and spread out but still walkable. It’s lively but relaxed and popular with internationals, particularly Brits , young couples, young families, and older couples looking for somewhere with lots of entertainment options.

The hotels here are well-represented by package tour operators and prices are good value.

It’s divided into two sections, each with a cluster of beach bars and accommodation. The area around the Canal d’Amour is more compact and busy, whereas the main beach is large and family friendly with a wide selection of eateries, bars, and accommodation in the grid of streets behind (this is where you’ll find ‘the Strip’).

There are chilled-out beach bars and a mix of Greek and international restaurants. It’s one of the better resorts on Corfu for nightlife, it’s not exactly a party town but you will find plenty of bars including Greek nights, karaoke, live music and Elvis impersonators in the summer, but no clubs.

It’s one of the more commercialised resorts in Corfu but has an amiable and unpretentious air (as well as those amazing beaches). In the summer months it can get very crowded.

What’s the beach like?

The main beach at Sidari with rock formations in the background.

Sidari has several beaches of  golden sand .

The main beach occupies the eastern side of Sidari and is half a kilometre long. It has soft sand  and shallow child-friendly waters. The beach is wide and roomy with plenty of cafes right on the beach with attached sun-lounger zones.

On the western side of Sidari you’ll find its iconic sandstone rock formations . There are actually several rocky inlets and you can swim off most of them when the seas are calm. Within this area are a few smaller sandy beaches. You can also sunbathe on the rocky platforms.

The seas in Sidari are Blue-Flag rated. The water is a vibrant colour where it meets the rock formations. As the beach is clay in parts the water can sometimes be a little murky and not quite as crystal-clear as other parts of Corfu.

Those who prefer a quieter dip may prefer to head east to the narrow strip of pebble beach at Megali.

Activities and amenities

visit sidari corfu

There’s something for everyone in Sidari.

It has a good selection of watersports including the child-pleasing banana boats and donuts, paragliding, small boat rental, paddleboards, kayaks, and pedaloes.

There are many travel agencies offering organised excursions around the island by bus and by boat , as well as to neighbouring islands and to Albania.

You can pop in to The Vine Wine Bar on the main road to same some local Corfiot wines.

There’s a small waterpark hotel just outside town which offers day entry for non-residents.

For those who enjoy walking there are scenic hikes along the coast to the unique Cape Drastis area.

In the summer months there is usually a bus link to the other north coast resorts.

Transport and accessibility

visit sidari corfu

From the airport:

Sidari is a 1 hour drive from Corfu Airport and Corfu Town .

A private transfer from the airport is around €50-60.

Hoppa  is available for shared transfers.

Public transport:

Sidari is served by Corfu’s Green Bus system. There are daily buses from the KTEL bus station just outside Corfu Town. Buses are less frequent on Saturdays and don’t always run on Sundays. Tickets are around €4 one way. If your flight arrives later in the evening you’ll need to look at transfers rather than using the bus.

Sometimes during peak summer season there are extra bus routes available linking popular resorts (including neighbouring Roda, Acharavi, and Kassiopi) but check before you go as these aren’t always operating.

It’s a short walk (less than 5 minutes) from the bus station in Sidari to the main beach, and around 10 minutes to the Canal d’Amour.

Accessibility :

Sidari is flat and there’s a large free public car park just behind the beach. There are no steps to the main beach. There is no boardwalk or footpath running alongside the beach although several points are accessible by side roads.

There’s a dirt trail connecting the main beach to the rocky beaches or you can also take the main road which goes over the river. Steps are required to get down to the beaches but the roads are paved as far as the cafes/hotels overlooking them.

There is no  Seatrac .

Backstreet in Sidari.

Prices in Sidari are on the cheaper side for Corfu. There are plenty of bargain accommodations to be had, and food and drink prices are also very reasonable.

As a bonus, many sun-loungers on Sidari Beach are free for customers of the attached beach bar.

Sidari Corfu and the Beach of Canal D’amour

Sidari Beach Resort in Corfu

Best clubs at sidari, the beaches in sidari, the amazing rock formations of canal d’amour beach, accommodation in sidari, restaurants in sidari, the hinterland and neighboring places, photos from sidari area, wrapping up, more in northwest corfu.

Sidari resort

Sidari  is located on the northwest end of Corfu land . A large tourist resort and a long stretch of golden sand ending at the famous beach of Canal d’Amour . It is one of Corfu’s great tourist destinations.

Whilst it is well placed for exploring the north and northwest of the island, Sidari is not an ideal base for those wishing to venture further afield. It is about as far from Corfu Town as it is possible to be. And to explore the rest of Corfu on public transport you have to go there first.

The distance from Corfu town is about 30 miles and it is easily accessible by car.

Until the late 80s, Sidari was a beautiful but almost deserted beach, that belonged to the residents of Avliotes village which is nearby in the island’s interior. Back then the road was in very bad condition.

Sidari was visited only by tourists from other tourist areas to swim in its stunning golden seashores.

But in the 1990s, things changed. Landowners from the traditional village of Avliotes started boisterous tourism development. This has made Sidari almost a city that offers many and varied pleasures for tourists.

Large hotels were built and the huge empty areas were filled with large restaurants and bars. Much larger and more comfortable than other already established tourist areas.

Sidari’s main street nowadays is consistent with bars and tavernas offering everything. From ‘karaoke’ to Greek music and food from most parts of the world is on offer.

What is Sidari Resort for

Sidari Resort is an ideal choice for those looking to relax, enjoy the sun and sea, and have a chance to eat out in a different place every evening.

Also for young people looking for fun, the nightlife here offers many options.

Sidari is not particularly known for its bustling nightlife compared to some other Greek islands or cities. However, there are still some spots where you can enjoy drinks, music, and a lively atmosphere. Here are a few clubs and bars in Sidari that are popular among tourists:

  • Ice Club Sidari: This club is known for its vibrant atmosphere, great music, and friendly staff. It’s a popular spot for dancing and enjoying cocktails with friends.
  • The Vine: Located in the heart of Sidari, The Vine is a trendy bar offering a wide selection of drinks, including cocktails and local wines. It often hosts live music events and DJ nights.
  • Cheers Bar Sidari: A lively bar with a fun atmosphere, Cheers Bar is a favorite among tourists looking for a place to relax and enjoy drinks. It often features karaoke nights and live entertainment.
  • Salt and Pepper Bar: Situated on Sidari’s main strip, Salt and Pepper Bar offers a relaxed ambiance and a variety of cocktails, beers, and spirits. It’s a popular spot for pre-dinner drinks or late-night cocktails.
  • Jam Bar: Known for its friendly staff and relaxed vibe, Jam Bar is a cozy spot to enjoy a few drinks with friends. It often hosts live music performances and karaoke nights.

While Sidari may not have a large number of clubs compared to some other destinations, these bars provide enjoyable nightlife options for visitors looking to unwind and socialize during their stay. As always, it’s a good idea to check recent reviews and local recommendations for the latest information on nightlife venues in Sidari.

Of course, daytime activities revolve around the beach, one of Corfu’s longest and loveliest which slopes gently into the sea. This makes it an ideal place for children to learn to swim. And, when they tire of the water, to make sandcastles and play on the firm sand.

Looking out to sea, the islands of Erikoussa, Othoni, and Mathraki can be seen. The Diapontia islands , belong to Greece but are set on the way to Italy. Regular boat trips can be enjoyed, giving the visitor a chance to explore them.

A gentle stroll along the coast brings the visitor to the famous beach at Canal d’Amour. Where people can swim through an archway of sand into the open sea beyond.

Corfu photos - Sidari, canal d'amour

Canal d’Amour is the French name for the Channel of Love. A very famous and nice natural formation of sandstone rocks, corrosive by waves and winds. This makes it one of the best and most unique beaches in Corfu .

A natural beautiful beach, difficult to find elsewhere in the world.

The main part of Canal d’Amour is a small beach between two long capes made of sandstone. From these rocks, you can dive into the turquoise waters and swim to the near small rocks that look like submarines. They are scattered almost everywhere, you can climb up to them and get a short time rest, it is a unique experience.

There are also some caves and bights as well as small holes in the surrounding rocks.

The beach and the rocks at Canal D’amour are very crowded. Keep in mind that the Channel of Love is visited daily by thousands of people. So to find some space, it is better to visit it early in the morning or later in the evening. You must be patient and consider that every tourist on the island wants and will visit it at least once.

Tradition says that if you meet someone while swimming between these rocks you will fall in love and this love will last forever.

This legend has made Sidari a popular honeymoon destination, and many weddings and anniversaries are celebrated here.

The beach is constantly busy and the shallow waters are ideal for families with small children, as well as couples.

It is also a great spot for snorkeling and other water sports activities.

There are plenty of umbrellas and sun loungers for hire, and many bars, restaurants, and cafes nearby, making it the perfect stop for a fun and relaxing day out.

Canal D’amour is located in the middle of Sidari and Peroulades . This matter is not yet completely clear and is still a reason for a dispute between the two settlements.

Sidari offers a range of dining options, from traditional Greek tavernas to international cuisine. Here are some restaurants that are well-regarded by visitors:

These are just a few options to consider, and there are many more restaurants to explore in Sidari, offering a range of cuisines to suit every taste and budget.

It’s always a good idea to check reviews and ask locals for recommendations to find the perfect dining spot for your preferences.

Sidari has close links to its neighbors – Arillas, and Agios Stefanos – and buses go between the three resorts, giving the visitor more choices and variety. Most people who come here, however, go for the sun and sand by day and the lively nightlife after dark and do not stir far away!

Going inland the coastal development soon gives way to small farms as the land here is very fertile. The animals graze, and grapes are tended, often by the older generation who have been doing this all their lives.

It is strange to imagine their lives, close to the soil, and reliant on the weather for their crops. And contrasting them with those of their grandchildren now working in bars and tavernas. Or, as educational opportunities have expanded so much in the last 30 years, studying abroad for a profession.

At least once during their stay in Sidari people go to the nearby village of Peroulades to enjoy the spectacular sunset view from the top of the cliff there. This attracts people from far away, who sit sipping a drink and watching the great golden sun sink into the blue sea.

The village itself repays exploring, there are some superb old buildings there. It was here and in Avliotes, where the people of Sidari lived in the days gone by when seaside houses were only occupied in summer.

Sidari is one of the most popular and lively tourist resorts on the island, particularly favoured by British tourists.

Sidari is one of the most popular and lively tourist resorts on the island, particularly favoured by British tourists. It is a reference point for the whole island and anyone who visits Corfu will definitely visit Sidari, specifically for its beaches which are renowned for their sandstone geological formations.

Located about 35 km northwest of the centre of the island, it is essentially a village. Opposite are the Diapontia islands of Ereikousa , Othoni and Mathraki , to which there is regular sea transport as well as organized boat trips. Buses link Sidari with the neighbouring areas of Arillas and Agios Stefanos Avlioton .

Until the late 1980’s it was simply a beautiful, but predominantly deserted ,beach. In the 1990’s it became a booming development offering the tourist a variety of accommodation options ranging from large hotels to studio apartments. The main street has a wide variety of shops, supermarkets, ATMs, tavernas, restaurants, cafes, bars and clubs. International cuisine of all kinds is to be found from British fish and chips or Sunday roasts to Indian curry, Italian pizza and pasta, Chinese, traditional Greek and seafood. Music of all genres resounds from the eateries and is as diverse as the dining options. Sidari buzzes day and night in summer and is a bustling hive of activity.

Sidari

Sidari is characterized by its beaches. Three beaches dominate, with their kaleidoscope of blue-green waters and glorious, golden sand. The main beach of the area is next to the port, being sandy, large and very shallow. It has sunbeds and umbrellas for hire and offers a variety of water sports for those who enjoy white-knuckle, high adrenaline, inflatable rides i.e. Flyfish, Rapid Radar, Twister, Ringo and Big Skimmer to name a few. Paragliding, wakeboarding and waterskiing are also available. The last beach is called Apoptrypti and is accessible via a narrow road that starts from the outskirts of the resort. This picturesque beach, surrounded by massive sandstone rock faces, has characteristic, muddy sand which is excellent for the skin. It is an organized beach with umbrellas and sunbeds for rent. There are water sports and jet ski hire as well.

Sidari

Archaeological interest

In Sidari, at the Canal D’Amour archeological site, the remains of the first confirmed settlement of the island, dating back to the Neolithic Age, were discovered and explored in the 1960s by Professor Augustine Sordina.

Sidari, back in time

It is one of the few places where the stratigraphic sequence includes remains of the Mesolithic period in Greece and Ancient Neolithic period of the western mainland and island.

During the Mesolithic period before the Neolithic, when people lived by hunting and gathering rather than by agriculture, the data suggests that hunter-gatherers also made war.

The Neolithic economy was boosted by the cultivation of domesticated plants like cereals and legumes as well as stock breeding of domestic farm animals as a food source. The appearances of ceramics and stonework were new elements as was the building of houses made of straw.

Initially utensils were basic, while later their surfaces were decorated and engraved. Similar decorative techniques also appear in northwestern Greece and the Adriatic, suggesting interaction between Neolithic communities. In Sidari there are archaeological findings to show that life continued until the Bronze Age, (beginning of the 6th millennium), when it was abandoned as a result of being covered by river alluvium.

The charming Old Town, in particular, is worth visiting and you’ll recognise the central green that hosted the family’s cricket match from season two. Where to stay: Hotel Bella Venezia is a historic boutique hotel in the heart of Corfu Town, housed in a glorious restored neo-classical mansion. It was once the stately home of one of the island's 'first families' but now contains 30 rooms and one suite, some of which offer panoramic views of the town.

<p>Considered one of Corfu’s most beautiful corners, this gleaming resort on the island’s northeast coast is where you’ll find the White House, where real-life Larry Durrell lived with his wife Nancy.
