Sammy Hagar tour: Van Halen songs on playlist for Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, Jason Bonham

van halen tour names

Sammy Hagar plans to revitalize some Van Halen vibes on his upcoming summer tour.

For The Best of All Worlds Tour, Hagar and his bandmates in The Circle – bassist Michael Anthony, a founding member of Van Halen, and drummer Jason Bonham – will be joined by guitarist virtuoso Joe Satriani , who has recorded and performed with Hagar and Anthony in the band Chickenfoot.

The itinerary kicks off on July 13 in West Palm Beach, Florida, and the tour hits a total of 28 cities, concluding August 31 in St. Louis, Missouri. Loverboy will serve as the opening act.

Pre-sales begin on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 10 a.m., with general on-sale starting Friday, Nov. 17 at 10 a.m. local. For more information go to RedRocker.com .

Hagar, 76, joined Van Halen as vocalist in 1985 after David Lee Roth left. Hagar also left the band in 1996, but returned for a 2004 tour. Recently, Hagar says he and Anthony decided to perform songs from their days playing in Van Halen at Hagar's annual Birthday Bash last month in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

"We pulled out a couple of them and it was an instant lovefest with the fans from our first riffs," Hagar said in a statement with the tour announcement. "The music we created is going to outlive us all. They deserve to be heard so it's time we go out and serve the fans that music, while we still can."

The four albums of the "Van Hagar" era of the band – 5150 (1986), OU812 (1988), For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (1991), and Balance (1995) – were recently re-released in newly remastered editions.

“It’s crazy to think that it’ll be 20 years since Mikey and I played these songs with Van Halen on the 04’ Best of Both Worlds Tour,” said Hagar. “With Joe on board, we can take a deeper dive into those years. We’re going to touch on some hits from my entire career but seeing fans old and new really embrace the new collection set off something in Mikey and I."

Joining the band on keyboards and backing vocals is Australian musician Rai Thistlethwayte.

January 26, 2024, remembering you, ed, alex inducted into modern drummer hall of fame.

Alex Van Halen at his drum kit

September 5, 2023: Alex Van Halen’s place in the pantheon of rock ’n’ roll drummers is legendary. The incredible body of work that he created alongside his brother Eddie is memorialized in Van Halen’s historic catalog of genre-defining music. With each new album, the group, which initially also featured bassist Michael Anthony and vocalist David Lee Roth, further developed its unique brand of music. Since Day 1, the foundation of that sound was the bottomless rumble and stratospheric crack of Alex Van Halen’s drumming.

Though informed by the heaviest of classic rock’s first-generation bands, from the outset Van Halen also had an ear to the future, retaining and even expanding their popularity in the midst of the new wave era, when they unabashedly incorporated keyboard hooks yet never betrayed their hard-rock base. Alex, like Eddie a self-described “tone chaser,” was deeply invested in keeping the VH sound contemporary and exploratory, imbuing his drum performances not only with gargantuan beats and blazing fills, but captivating and idiosyncratic tones.

As much as any drummer in the history of rock, Alex Van Halen helped define the signature sound of his band—which is all the more startling given the fact that his guitar-playing brother is among the most influential players in the history of the music. Alex’s energetic and unpredictable playing style and the unique bark of his sonic attack add an air of excitement to the music, and set the stage for the band’s larger-than-life persona. Blending many influences, such as big band swing, blues, early rock ’n’ roll, and even African drumming, Alex chooses from a wide palette.

And as his playing evolved from album to album and tour to tour, so did Alex’s setup. Usually going for higher-pitched toms and ultra-deep bass drums, he would often experiment with different gear and technology to bring something new to the table. Incorporating Rototoms, timbales, cowbells, tube drums, and electronics, Alex spares no expense when it comes to finding the right equipment to achieve the sounds that are in his head.

Perhaps the most significant event in the recent history of the band, however, came in late 2020, with the passing of Eddie Van Halen. The compilation of this book, including Modern Drummer’s most recent interview with Alex Van Halen, was completed prior to the news of Eddie’s passing. Given that the constant throughout all of Van Halen’s achievements—and what guaranteed their stature not only on the charts but in popular culture—was the bloodline of the Van Halen brotherhood, this book can be viewed not only as a tribute to one of the greatest rock drummers of all time, but to the glorious music that Alex and Eddie created together.

Boxed Set Introduces Four Newly Remastered VH Studio Albums With Sammy Hagar Plus Rarities Recorded Between 1989 And 2004

5-LP And 5-CD Versions Arriving On October 6

PRE-ORDER NOW

Newly Remastered Version of “Humans Being" Available Today Digitally

LISTEN HERE

Los Angeles - Van Halen will release a new boxed set this fall spotlighting the band’s second incarnation, with singer Sammy Hagar , guitarist Eddie Van Halen , drummer Alex Van Halen , and bassist Michael Anthony . The upcoming set includes newly remastered versions of four multi-platinum studio albums, along with a selection of rarities recorded between 1989 and 2004.

THE COLLECTION II will be available on October 6 on 5 LPs for $124.98 and 5 CDs for $49.98. Pre-order both versions HERE . All the music in the set was mastered directly from the original master tapes, a process overseen by the band’s longtime engineer, Donn Landee.

The new set is the long-awaited sequel to The Collection , a compilation released in 2015 that focused on the six studio albums recorded by the band’s original line-up, which featured singer David Lee Roth. THE COLLECTION II picks up where its predecessor left off and covers the four consecutive #1 albums released during the Hagar era: 5150 (1986), OU812 (1988), For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (1991), and Balance (1995).

The journey begins with 5150 , Van Halen’s seventh studio album and the band’s first to claim the top spot on the Billboard 200 . Certified platinum six times in the U.S., the record treated fans to hits like “Dreams,” “Love Walks In,” and “Why Can’t This Be Love,” which peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 . The group returned two years later with OU812 , a quadruple-platinum smash that delivered four Billboard Hot 100 hits, including “Finish What Ya Started” and “When It’s Love.”

The accolades continued with For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge , which earned Van Halen its first Grammy ® Award for Favorite Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Album. Debuting at #1 and staying there for three weeks, the album achieved triple-platinum certification. The record produced an incredible seven singles, including hits like “Poundcake,” “Top Of The World,” and “Right Now.”

In 1993, the band released its first live album, Live: Right Here, Right Now , before returning in 1995 with Balance , its final studio album with Hagar. The album was another commercial triumph, debuting at #1, selling more than three million copies, and earning a Grammy ® nomination for “The Seventh Seal.”

THE COLLECTION II concludes with Studio Rarities 1989-2004, an exclusive compilation that assembles eight gems from the Hagar era for the first time. Among these rarities is “Crossing Over,” the B-Side to Balance’s “Can’t Stop Lovin’ You”, and the band’s only non-album B-side.

The compilation boasts other exceptional highlights, including the band’s cover of Little Feat’s “A Apolitical Blues” and the instrumental “Baluchitherium,” which were originally left off the vinyl versions of OU812 and Balance, respectively. Additionally, the set features two songs the band contributed to the Twister Soundtrack – “Humans Being” and the Grammy ® -nominated “Respect The Wind.”

Rounding out the set are “It’s About Time,” “Up For Breakfast,” and “Learning To See,” which were recorded during the band’s temporary reunion with Hagar in 2004. All three debuted that year on Van Halen’s second greatest hits collection, The Best of Both Worlds .

Wolfgang Van Halen Names His Two ‘Dream’ Bands to Tour With

Wolfgang Van Halen 's Mammoth WVH has already opened for some legendary groups in the past, but during a recent conversation with Loudwire Nights ' Kevin Vargas, the rocker named his two "dream" bands that he wants to tour with.

Mammoth WVH have played with Guns N' Roses in the past, and they're currently on the road with Alter Bridge . This summer, they'll open for Metallica , as well as Def Leppard and Motley Crue , so it's safe to say that the band will get to perform for some massive audiences throughout the year. But who else is on Van Halen's bucket list to tour with?

"The two dreams — I mean, if Guns N' Roses and Metallica aren't already just the most insane dream coming true — would be AC/DC , because that was like my band with my dad, that was our favorite band. And Foo Fighters , because Dave [Grohl] is like, when it comes to Mammoth, and the way he started Foo Fighters, is my biggest influence for sure," Van Halen said.

"I'm super lucky to be in the position I am, it's very humbling... For my friends, like Mark [Tremonti] , to want us to be touring with them. Or, I met Lars [Ulrich] at the Taylor Hawkins tribute, and then we got a request for our management [for us] to open for Metallica now," he continued. "It's a really insane thing to be a part of, and I'm just thankful. It's an honor to have people see merit in what I do separately, and not because of my name."

Van Halen just released the first single from his second Mammoth WVH album yesterday (March 22) called  "Another Celebration at the End of the World."  The album, titled  Mammoth II,  will be available Aug. 4, and will apparently see the rocker get a little heavier and more adventurous in regards to its sound.

"I think I let some of what I personally enjoy a bit more, like I think I let the heavier influences creep in on this album. It's a bit of a heavier album in comparison [to the first]," Van Halen explained. "And I think I challenged myself vocally and on guitar as well, I think coming into this album with that confidence I was talking about after touring for about two years, I felt ready to kind of challenge myself."

To hear more from the interview with Van Halen, tune into Loudwire Nights tonight at 7PM ET. Pre-order your copy of  Mammoth II  at this location , and get tickets to see the band through this link .

Wolfgang Van Halen brings his Mammoth WVH to Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl

When your last name is Van Halen, the expectation on your musical abilities is pretty high.

But Wolfgang Van Halen , son of guitar legend Eddie Van Halen (and actress Valerie Bertinelli), is proving that while he did indeed inherit his dad's musical abilities, he's also carving his own musical path that could transcend his last name.

While his guitar playing chops won't surprise you, his strong vocals might.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

With his band, Mammoth WVH, Van Halen ties back to his father's legacy with the name Mammoth, which was the elder Van Halen's first band, but he also abbreviates his own name so as to not lean to heavily on the legacy.

Mammoth has released two albums, "Mammoth I" and "Mammoth II" both of which Van Halen played every instruments and sang all vocals. For his live show, however, he says he has compiled a group of friends who enjoy bringing his music to life on stage. The group has been touring for the better part of three years and will hit Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl Thursday night.

"My favorite thing about playing live is just the energy," Van Halen told The Tennessean from a Norfolk, Va. tour stop. "I have my my best friends that I've assembled on stage and just to be in a place where where people are excited to hear the tunes ... There's nothing like the live energy. I love the creating and being in the studio, but the other half of it is being able to perform it for people and feel that energy."

Mammoth WVH debut album scores Grammy nom

The 2021 release of the band's debut album "Mammoth I" debuted at No. 1 on the "Billboard" Independent Albums chart, Top Hard Rock Albums chart and Top Rock Albums chart as well as landing at No. 12 on the "Billboard" 200. The album produced two No. 1 songs with "Distance," written for his dad, garnering his first Grammy nomination for Best Rock Song.

In 2022 the band released "Mammoth II" a solid second effort that amps the energy up another notch with 10 tracks recorded at the acclaimed 5150 studios in Los Angeles.

In a recently released "Behind the Music" episode on the younger Van Halen, he explains that while reliving his life story and time with his father was emotional for him, Van Halen said he was honored to be given a chance to tell the story so many fans of his dad may not know.

"I just thought it was my one opportunity to really kind of lay it out and, and tell my story in my own words, because I think so many people have sort of already decided what my story is and who I am for me, that it felt like a wonderful opportunity to be able to explain it myself."

In addition to touring with names like Van Halen, Metallica, Guns 'N Roses and Alter Bridge, Van Halen made a special appearance at the internationally televised tribute to the Foo Fighters' late drummer Taylor Hawkins at the request of Dave Grohl himself.

He played on the 2024 Oscars with fellow guitarist Slash and also paid tribute to Jon Bon Jovi at the MusiCares event held during Grammy week in Los Angeles earlier this year.

He's involved in Mr. Holland's Opus, a foundation that supports music education, and recently launched the Adopt A School campaign where he funded $1,000 toward each of the first 100 schools to participate. It's a cause his father supported for years and how Van Halen is continuing that legacy.

"Music is a universal language. My dad had a very strong relationship, with this foundation and so I thought it was important to maintain that connection."

You can't let Van Halen off the phone without asking him what he wants his legacy to be beyond being the son of an incredibly famous and well-loved musician. How does he make the name Van Halen his own?

"Wow, that's a, that's a big question," he says. "For people to see that I had something to offer on my own completely aside from the name and what that represents. You know, I think to put, to put aside everything that came before me and to truly judge me on my own offerings and my own skill."

Alex Van Halen Tells All About Life With Eddie in New Book: ‘I Was With Him From Day One’

By Brian Hiatt

Brian Hiatt

Eddie and Alex Van Halen had the closest musical relationship imaginable, playing together for nearly six decades — even in Van Halen’s most fallow periods, when the band was between singers, the brothers would rehearse at Eddie’s 5150 Studios to rehearse just about every day. Alex, Van Halen’s drummer, has been almost entirely silent since Eddie’s death from cancer in October 2020, sharing only a brief statement: “Hey, Ed. Love you. See you on the other side. Your brother, Al.”

Van Halen singers David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar have both released memoirs over the years, and there has been no shortage of other Van Halen books, including early manager Noel Monk’s memoir Runnin’ With the Devil: A Backstage Pass to the Wild Times, Loud Rock, and the Down and Dirty Truth Behind the Making of Van Halen and Greg Renoff’s impeccably researched Van Halen Rising : How a Southern California Backyard Party Band Saved Heavy Metal . But Alex apparently isn’t a fan of any of them. “All these people are writing books about the band, and they know nothing about the inner workings of this band,” Alex told  Modern Drummer in August 2020. “And Ed and I don’t say anything because we’re not in the business of bullshitting on the internet and books and all that kind of crap. We just want to play. It’s that simple.”

Sammy Hagar Announces ‘Best Of All Worlds’ Tour With Joe Satriani

November 14, 2023 —by VHND Leave a Comment

Rock & Roll Hall of Famer SAMMY HAGAR is embarking on the long-awaited “THE BEST OF ALL WORLDS” 2024 tour. Hagar will be joined by rock heavyweights and longtime bandmates MICHAEL ANTHONY (bass, backing vocals), JASON BONHAM (drums) and revealed on Nov 14 on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show that JOE SATRIANI, one of the best guitar players in the world, will complete the band. Produced by Live Nation and featuring special guests Loverboy, the 28-date tour will commence on July 13 in West Palm Beach, FL and will conclude on August 31 in St. Louis, MO. Pre-sales begin on Wednesday, November 15 at 10 am. General on-sale begins Friday, November 17 at 10am local. For tickets and more details, go to RedRocker.com .

“It’s crazy to think that it’ll be 20 years since Mikey and I played these songs with Van Halen on the 04’ Best of Both Worlds Tour,” said Hagar. “With Joe on board, we can take a deeper dive into those years. We’re going to touch on some hits from my entire career but seeing fans old and new really embrace the new collection set off something in Mikey and I. We were at my Birthday Bash in Cabo for my 76th and looked at each other and high fived, like ‘let’s do it.’ We pulled out a couple of them and it was an instant lovefest with the fans from our first riffs. The music we created is going to outlive us all. They deserve to be heard so it’s time we go out and serve the fans that music, while we still can.”

The tour follows on the heels of the chart-topping success of THE COLLECTION II, the box set released October 6 featuring newly remastered versions of the four consecutive #1 albums released during the Hagar era of Van Halen: 5150 (1986), OU812 (1988), FOR UNLAWFUL CARNAL KNOWLEDGE (1991), and BALANCE (1995). A reminder to fans of the arsenal of hits, many which haven’t been played live since the band’s 2004 reunion tour.

Collectively, Anthony, Satriani and Bonham have played together in nearly every phase of Hagar’s career including Van Halen, Chickenfoot and The Circle, so fans can expect a setlist which draws from some of the biggest rock anthems of the last 4-decades, including, Finish What Ya Started, 5150, Your Love is Driving Me Crazy, Best of Both Worlds, Poundcake, Sexy Little Thing, One Way To Rock, Right Now, Good Enough, Eagles Fly and more. They’ve also enlisted legendary Australian musician, Rai Thistlethwayte on keyboard and backing vocals. The tour represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see this band of brothers deliver one of the most legendary hits-packed live shows of their career.

“we’d have a lot of fun if you came and joined us”: wolfgang van halen recalls the moment he personally invited david lee roth to rejoin van halen.

When Wolfgang Van Halen started jamming with his dad and uncle, he made it his personal mission to get David Lee Roth involved.

After the departure of David Lee Roth in 1985, Van Halen went through two more vocalists – Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone – before he returned in 2006. Hagar performed with the rock titans between 1985 and 1996, and again from 2003 to 2005, while Cherone was in the band between 1996 and 1999.

In a recent episode of Behind The Music on Paramount+ , Wolfgang Van Halen reveals how he was the one to offer an olive branch to Roth back in 2006. It came after the Mammoth WVH frontman started jamming with his father – and it started to get serious.

“Alex [Van Halen] and Dad were always jamming no matter what. It wasn’t until I was hanging out that he was like, ‘Hey Wolf pick up a bass,’” he recalls [via People ]. “It was clearly just a fun thing for the three of us. We did it for a while – to the point where it was like ‘oh shit, there’s something here!’ We were connected on a new level other than just family. We were rhythmically entwined.”

The three worked perfectly together – but Wolfgang couldn’t help but consider how they might sound with David Lee Roth involved. “I wrote out the exact wording of what I should say so I could call David Lee Roth and ask if he wanted to come over and jam,” he explains.

“I basically was like, ‘Hi. This is Wolfgang Van Halen and I’ve been jamming with my uncle and my father at 5150 and we’d have a lot of fun if you came and joined us. This ain’t no joke,’” he says. “I remember really specifically, my dad made me finish it [like that.]”

Upon sending the message, Wolfgang recalls his excitement. “It was like, ‘Oh I’m playing with my family and this is going to be really exciting. Everything’s going to be great and nothing bad is ever going to happen,’” he says. “Shows you how young I was…”

The relationship between Wolfgang and Roth has seemingly soured since 2006. While Wolfgang went on to tour with Van Halen for 14 years, it has recently come to light that Roth isn’t too keen on Eddie Van Halen ’s prodigious son.

In a rather unhinged YouTube video posted in January entitled ‘This Crazy Kid..’ , Roth slammed Wolfgang.

“This fucking kid,” Roth said. “He’s complaining the entire tour like I’m not paying enough attention to him on stage. Like Santa Claus coming down the chimney and popping out on Christmas with nobody paying attention. Shalom to the dome, homie. I’m giving him the best. Everything I’ve got in front of twenty, thirty thousand people at a clip, and he’s complaining to everybody around me — the business manager, the security guy, the clothing lady — ‘Dave’s not paying enough attention to me.’”

Wolfgang’s episode of Behind the Music is out now on Paramount+ .

Foo Fighters and Wolfgang Van Halen prank fans with ‘Eruption’ solo

Foo Fighters pulled a prank on their fans at Welcome To Rockville with the help of Wolfgang Van Halen – watch footage of the trick below.

To close out their trek across the United States, Foo Fighters headlined the Welcome To Rockville festival in Daytona. Midway through their set, the band performed a guitar solo, followed by shortened covers of Beastie Boys ‘ ‘Sabotage’, Ramones ‘ ‘Blitzkrieg Pop’, and Nine Inch Nails ‘ ‘March of the Pigs’.

Following the segment, frontman Dave Grohl took to the microphone to complain that he’s never given the time or opportunity for his own guitar solo: “You know who never gets a fuckin’ solo? Me, god damn it, I never get a fucking solo! So, since this is the last night of the trip, I’m gonna do a fucking solo. How about that? You may think, ‘That guy can’t play a fucking solo.’ You wanna see me do a guitar solo right now?”

Grohl then seemingly launched into the tap-solo segment of Van Halen ‘s ‘Eruption’. However, the solo kept playing after Grohl was done and had raised his hands in the air to celebrate before the camera panned to show Wolfgang Van Halen ripping through the solo offstage.

Grohl groaned: “Dude, I told you to keep that cool, Wolfie! What the fuck are you doing right now? Everybody, give it up for Wolfgang Van Halen.” Wolfgang then played a short snippet of Van Halen’s ‘Hot For Teacher’ before being chased offstage as Grohl said they’d not be able to stop once they started playing more Van Halen tracks.

Foo Fighters also recently dedicated ‘My Hero’ to the late legendary record producer  Steve Albini . The legendary record producer – who was the mastermind behind iconic albums such as  Nirvana ‘s ‘ In Utero ‘ and  Manic Street Preachers ‘ ‘Journal For Plague Lovers’–  died on May 8 of a heart attack  while at Electronic Audio, his recording studio in Chicago. His death was confirmed by the studio’s staff members.

“Tonight I’d like to dedicate this song to a friend that we lost the other day, who I’ve known a long, long time,” Grohl told the crowd. “He left us much too soon. He’s touched all of your lives, I’m sure. I’m talking about Steve Albini. For those of you who know, you know. For those of you who don’t know, just remember that name: Steve Albini. Let’s sing this one for him.”

Dave Grohl is a showman. The Foo Fighters frontman loves to surprise and delight his band’s fans by giving them a bit of the unexpected amid the sweat and rumble of a typically high-energy Foos show.
