springboks lions tour jersey

ASICS unveiled the unique Springbok jersey for next year’s tour to South Africa of the British & Irish Lions on Friday, featuring a vintage colourway and special commemorative 3D logo, among other features.

The world champions will don a unique commemorative jersey when they face the best players from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in three Tests on home turf next year in the much-anticipated Castle Lager Lions Series.

“Lions tours come around only every 12 years, so we thought it appropriate to create a jersey that is indisputably unique,” said Jurie Roux, SA Rugby CEO.

“It will be worn by the team on only three occasions and we wanted to make it memorable and special for the players and hopefully this unique rendering of Springbok green – in conjunction with the badge – will do exactly that.”

The 2021 tour will be 14 th time the British & Irish Lions have visited South Africa and ASICS wanted to celebrate this rich history by putting a very classic spin on the most modern jersey.

“A British & Irish Lions Tour to South Africa is a hugely significant event for both players and supporters, as it takes place only every 12 years or so,” ASICS South Africa said.

“That kind of rarity bring with it a special responsibility when creating a jersey and we wanted the players and the fans to get goosebumps every time they pull that jersey over their heads.”

In that vein, the new jersey blends the traditions of garment manufacture, with the latest in performance garment design and materials.

Undoubtedly the new jersey’s most distinguishing feature, is its unique colourway. According to ASICS, colour-matching and colour-dying was historically not the precise art it is today. Very often when the team took the field from one game to the next, the jerseys didn’t look the same and potentially, often showed a different shade of green.

The jersey features a special commemorative 3D logo

The jersey features a special commemorative 3D logo

“You get green by mixing blue and yellow together and so a lot of the time when these guys ran out, their jerseys appeared to have a slight blue undertone,” added ASICS South Africa.

“It’s still green, of course, but slightly bluer than some of the modern green-and-gold incarnations. This jersey captures that essence.”

Apart from the colourway, the new jersey retains the classic gold collar and features an enlarged crest – much like on rugby jerseys of old – detailed by a 3D logo as seen on many Champions League football club kits.

The new jersey will also carry the logo of MTN, who have been proud partners of the Springboks for more than three years.

Nomsa Mazibuko, General Manager for Brand and Communication: MTN SA, said that both MTN and the Springboks have enjoyed a fruitful relationship over the years, which included South Africa becoming world champions.

Pieter-Steph du Toit

“MTN is proud to take this relationship a step further as principal-partners during the British & Irish Lions Tour 2021,” said Mazibuko, who also confirmed that partnering with the Springboks for this tour is a natural progression for MTN as this is widely regarded as the second biggest rugby tournament in the world considering it can only be experienced in South Africa every 12 years.

“It is our core belief that everyone deserves access to a modern connected life and MTN is the enabler that connects South Africans to one another and is a proud sponsor of their passion.”

The Castle Lager Lions Series begins on Saturday 3 July 2021 when the Lions face the DHL Stormers in Cape Town. Three weeks later the new jersey will be worn for the first time by the Springboks at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg – a venue which previously hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final.

The commemorative Springbok jersey for the 2021 series against the British & Irish Lions will be available to supporters from 11 December 2020 at Sportsman’s Warehouse, TotalSports, Sneakers and The Cross Trainer, as well as online at takealot.com and the SA Rugby Shop .

The Springboks’ Lions Tour jersey brings a bit of 1906 to 2021

springboks lions tour jersey

The Springboks have revealed the limited edition jersey that they’ll wear when the British & Irish Lions tour South Africa next year, and it’s a jersey that is replete with nods to the nation’s rugby heritage.

Most notable of which is the ‘vintage colour way’ of the shirt – it’s subtle, but the iconic green and gold has been tweaked to better reflect the inconsistency of colour-dyeing that occurred with old-school Springbok jerseys that would give a slight blue hue to the green.

springboks lions tour jersey

So while the shirt itself is clearly green, there’s a blue undertone that you don’t see with modern colour-matched artificially dyed fabrics – it’s a really subtle way to nod to the past, but a certainly unique one.

“You get green by mixing blue and yellow together and so a lot of the time when these guys ran out, their jerseys appeared to have a slight blue undertone,” said ASICS South Africa in a statement.

“It’s still green, of course, but slightly bluer than some of the modern green-and-gold incarnations. This jersey captures that essence.”

springboks lions tour jersey

Otherwise of course it’s every bit a modern ASICS jersey, with a squared off modern stub collar being particularly striking, but there’s a further retro touch that’s much more noticeable.

The Springbok logo itself itself has been enlarged in the style of old-school jerseys, and it’s also been contained inside a black shield which contains a ‘2021’ legend.

springboks lions tour jersey

This is a nice nod to the 1906 Springbok tour of Britain, Ireland and France – this was first time the Boks ever toured, and was also a tour when they first became known as the Springboks,

The badge on their jerseys was very similar to this, complete with shield, though it’s hard to tell from photos whether the badge itself here is black or green, as it appears both in different photos.

The Springboks will wear this jersey only for the three test matches against the British & Irish Lions, who revealed their 2021 jersey back in October.

the crest is on a felt background, the colour of which is consistent with the jersey. However, the patch can appear lighter or darker depending on the angle you look at it. Felt can rub one way or another.

Classic Match: The 1955 Lions edge a thriller in South Africa

After the Second World War, the Lions had re-established the touring tradition in 1950 with a trip to take on the All Blacks in New Zealand. [more]

After the Second World War, the Lions had re-established the touring tradition in 1950 with a trip to take on the All Blacks in New Zealand.

That series put the famous red jersey back on the map but it was five years later in 1955 that they really reached the heights.

Visit the Lions store for all your official merchandise

The Test series against the previously invincible Boks was drawn 2-2 but the game of the Tour was undoubtedly the first Test at Ellis Park.

Watched by as many as 100,000 – with a certain Nelson Mandela in the crowd – what the Lions served up has gone down in folklore as one of the greatest games ever. Or, in the words of Lions historian Clem Thomas: 'the match of that generation'.   THE TEAM

Captained and managed by the Northern Irish pair of Robin Thompson and Jack Siggins, the 1955 Lions captured the imagination with their attacking rugby.

The creative fulcrum of the side were their half-backs, the uncapped Englishman Dickie Jeeps and the effervescent Welshman Cliff Morgan at fly-half.

Out wide Tony O’Reilly was the chief beneficiary, the 19-year-old finishing with 16 tries on Tour while the English duo of Jeff Butterfield and Phil Davies controlled the midfield.

Up front an all-Welsh front row of Billy Williams, Bryn Meredith and Courtenay Meredith laid the platform for the likes of Thompson, Rhys Williams and Scottish legend Jim Greenwood to shine.

The Springbok legend Danie Craven knew what makes a good rugby team, and he called the 1955 side ‘one of the best ever to visit the Republic.’    THE BUILD-UP

From the moment they landed in Johannesburg and Morgan – the self-appointed choirmaster on Tour – led the team in a sing song the Lions were welcomed into South African hearts and minds.

But the Tour itself did not start in the finest fashion, the Lions lost their Tour opener against Western Transvaal and were then given a 20-0 hiding by Eastern Province.

The narrow 9-6 victory by Western Transvaal owed much to the boot of South African full-back Jackie van der Schyff – indeed it earned him a recall to the Springbok side for the first Test.   THE MATCH   And Van der Schyff would go on to play a pivotal role in a first Test that chopped and changed throughout. There were nine tries scored and the lead changed hand four times.

Piped out on August 6, 1955 by Scotland lock Ernie Michie – a midweek dirt-tracker who was in full highland regalia – the Lions started the brightest.

Ireland winger Cecil Pedlow went over in the corner to open up a 3-0 lead – tries were still only worth three points back then.

But the Boks came roaring back as debutant wing Theunis Briers went over, fed by skipper Stephen Fry and Van der Schyff converted as well as adding two penalties.

But the Lions came back when Butterfield picked a hard line off Morgan to crash over and this time Scotland full-back Angus Cameron converted and the Boks only led 11-8 at the break.   A MAN DOWN   Playing at altitude against a side that had not lost a Test series at home since 1896, the Lions chances looked to have taken a fatal blow early in the second half.

Flanker Reg Higgins went off injured and, with replacements not allowed in those days, the tourists faced an uphill battle with 14 men.

But rather than retreat into their shell, the Lions found another gear and Morgan was the tormentor in chief.

First the fly-half danced his way over for a fantastic solo score and then two of his kicks created chaos in the Springbok back field allowing Greenwood and O’Reilly to both go over in quick succession.

Cameron converted all three scores and the Lions looked well placed with a 23-11 lead.

But tiredness with 14 men was always going to be a factor and as the Lions faded, the Springboks grew in stature.

First Sias Swart went over before veteran prop Chris Koch blasted over and Van der Shyff again converted.

And with the clock having ticked past the 80-minute mark it looked like the Boks had broken Lions hearts as Briers darted over for his second.

The winger could have got closer to the posts – as he admitted afterwards – but with the metronomic full-back behind him it should not have mattered.

However, then Van der Schyff erred – he never played for the Boks again – and the Lions could celebrate a famous Test victory.   WHAT THEY SAID   Vivian Jenkins in the Sunday Times wrote : “Van der Schyff, the automaton, the robot, the kicker fantastic, who earlier in the game had put over two penalty goals and two conversions from all angled like a mathematician going about his work with a set square…. the Gods were on the Lions side and the ball hooked, by a surely trembling foot, went sailing far away to the left of the uprights and the spoils were ours."    Lions giant second row Tom Reid second row from Limerick standing under the posts: “Jesus, if he kicks this I’m turning Protestant!’   At the post match dinner Lions skipper Robin Thompson said : “To win a rugby international is fine, but to beat the Springboks is really something.”   THE REST OF THE TOUR   A Tom van Vollenhoven hat-trick led a Springbok backlash in the second Test as the Lions slumped to a 25-9 defeat.

But in the third Test the Lions went back to basics and showed plenty of guts and grit to grind out a 9-6 win and guarantee the series would at least be drawn.

However the Boks – who had not lost a home series since 1896 – refused to lie down and a 22-8 victory in the fourth and final Test meant the series was drawn 2-2.

After winning the opening Test that might have been a disappointment for the Lions but they were the first tourists since the 19th century – excluding the trips to Argentina – and the last until the 1971 legends in New Zealand to gain multiple victories over the southern hemisphere big three.
