Pira Tours really is the only company that allows you to walk on the island rookery with penguins, and it is a great experience. Currently the company doesn't take reservations online, which worried me, but we had no problem booking a tour for the next day when we arrived in Ushuaia. Mar 2024 • Couples. PiraTour is the only tour company where you can walk on Martillo Island, where the Gentoo and Magellanic penguins, hence the much higher price tag. All the other tours go by with a boat, but don't get off the boat. With this tour, you actually walk right up close with the penguins.

We were reassured by pira tour via email that we would be joining the tour on a yacht with limited number of people - not a catamaran with more than 150 individuals. This lack of transparency is disappointing and reflects poorly on the company. We paid US$600 for 2 persons - which is a triple charge due to the exchange rate that was applied.

The Pira Tour trip to the penguin rookery is the absolute best of the lot in Ushuaia. I had gone on a penguin tour boat several years ago, and it only stopped at the island for us to look at the penguins, who came up to the boat. This trip, I was planning for a group of six friends so was adamant that we get to see the penguins up close.

The first part of the tour was enjoyable, although the Acatushun museum which we visited on our way to Isla Martillo was underwhelming. The second part of the tour was more disappointing. The checkin process at the pira tour office and waiting for boarding took more than 1 hour which could have been avoided.

Pira Tour did an amazing job with the entire day. We took a boat ride out and listened to the tour, stopping to see wildlife and the lighthouse along the way. While there are many tours that take you close to the Penguin colony, Pira tour is the only one that has permissions to get off on the island and allow you to walk with the Penguins. The tour costs 2500pesos, about $160USD (as of early 2017) and can be booked online or at the Pira tour booth across the information center in Ushuaia.
