‘Grease’ – full cast revealed for UK and Ireland tour

In a much-anticipated announcement, lead producer Colin Ingram has unveiled the cast for the upcoming UK and Ireland tour of the iconic musical ‘Grease’. Directed by Nikolai Foster and choreographed by the legendary Arlene Phillips, the production is set to ignite stages from Dublin to Sheffield, with additional performances added due to overwhelming demand.

Marley Fenton, known for his role in Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Old Friends’ at Gielgud Theatre, steps into the iconic leather jacket as Danny, while Hope Dawe, a Mountview graduate, takes on the role of the charming Sandy. The ensemble boasts a stellar lineup, featuring Rebecca Stenhouse as Rizzo, George Michaelides as Kenickie, Kieran Lynch as Doody, Lewis Day as Roger, Sario Solomon as Sonny, Alicia Belgarde as Frenchy, Emerald B as Jan, India Chadwick as Marty, Jayd’n Tyrone as Eugene, Phoebe Roberts as Patty Simcox, Dominique Planter as Miss Lynch, Joe Gash as Vince Fontaine and Teen Angel, Deena Kapadia as Cha Cha, and Adam Davidson as Johnny Casino.

The ensemble is completed by Zera Aitken, Dylan Gordon-Jones, Sergi Ibanez, Thomas Inge, Lauren Hampton, Imogen Malone, Ben Middleton, and Carly Miles. The 2024 tour is set to kick off at the Churchill Theatre, Bromley, on April 12th, 2024. It will weave its way through various cities, concluding at the Lyceum Theatre, Sheffield, on November 16th.

‘Grease’, a timeless classic, has left an indelible mark on audiences, attracting over 500,000 people during its West End run at the Dominion Theatre, making it the theatre’s most successful summer production since ‘We Will Rock You.’ The musical received acclaim with four WhatsOnStage Award nominations, including Best Musical Revival and Best Choreography for Arlene Phillips.

Originally premiering in Chicago in 1971 before conquering Broadway in 1972, ‘Grease’ garnered seven Tony Award nominations, solidifying its place as one of the best musicals of all time. The show’s illustrious history includes notable actors such as Patrick Swayze, John Travolta, and Richard Gere, who understudied several roles before starring as Danny Zuko in the 1973 London premiere.

‘Grease’s cinematic adaptation in 1978, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, became the fourth highest-grossing live-action musical in history. The musical’s soundtrack boasts iconic hits like ‘Summer Nights’, ‘Greased Lightnin’, ‘Hopelessly Devoted To You’, and ‘You’re The One That I Want’.

Colin Ingram, at the helm of InTheatre Productions, alongside Frankel/Viertel/Baruch/Routh Group, Playing Field, and Curve, presents this spectacular production of ‘Grease’. Full cast announced for 2024 UK and Ireland tour of Grease the Musical ahead of Aberdeen dates

The iconic stage production is coming to Aberdeen for four nights this summer with the star-studded cast list revealed ahead of their Scottish tour dates in June and July.

The full cast for the UK and Ireland tour of Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey's iconic musical Grease has been announced, along with additional dates for summer 2024.

Aberdeen's His Majesty's Theatre will be playing host to the iconic rock opera - set in a 1950s Chicago high school - that has already been seen by over 500,000 people in the West End of London, making it the Dominion Theatre's most successful summer run since We Will Rock You, writes the Scottish Daily Express .

Directed by Nikolai Foster and choreographed by Arlene Phillips from Strictly Come Dancing, the show stars Marley Fenton as Danny, Hope Dawe as Sandy and Rebecca Stenhouse as Rizzo. Other cast members include Kieran Lynch from Edinburgh as Doody and Alicia Belgarde as Frenchy.

Stage and screen history

Grease originally opened in Chicago in 1971, followed by a move to Broadway in 1972, where it received seven Tony Award nominations, including one for Best Musical. During the show's eight-year run at the time, little known actors including Peter Gallagher, Patrick Swayze and John Travolta all appeared in the production, with Richard Gere understudying many roles before going on to star as Danny Zuko in the 1973 London premiere.

Grease was first performed at the Dominion Theatre in 1993 before transferring to the Cambridge Theatre in 1996. It returned to the West End, opening at the Piccadilly Theatre in 2007. The 1978 film adaptation starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John is the fourth highest-grossing live action musical of all time. The musical features beloved songs, including Summer Nights, Greased Lightnin', Hopelessly Devoted To You and You're The One That I Want.

Dan Partridge will be reprising the role of Danny, having played the role on the UK and Ireland tour in 2019. Georgia Louise will play Sandy.

Georgia Louise will play Sandy, with Paul French as Kenickie and Tendai Rinomhota as Rizzo. They are joined by Alex Christian as Doody, Josh Barnett as Roger, Inez Budd as Marty, Maeve Byrne as Jan, Marianna Neofitou as Frenchy, Corinna Powlesland as Miss Lynch and Cristian Zaccarini as Sonny.

Also in the cast are Alishia-Marie Blake , Thea Bunting, Kevin O'Dwyer, Laura-Jane Fenney, Jacob Fisher , Elliot Gooch, Dom Hutcheson, Haroun al Jeddal, Kalisha Johnson, Hannah-Faith Marram, Matt Trevorrow and Jacob Young .

They join the previously announced Peter Andre as Teen Angel and Vince Fontaine at certain venues.

The musical was due to tour in 2020 but had to be postponed due to COVID-19. Directed by Nikolai Foster and choreographed by Arlene Phillips , the 2021 tour will now begin at Curve, Leicester from 30 - 31 July.

Peter Andre is currently scheduled to perform at certain performances in Leicester, Plymouth, Canterbury, Nottingham, Milton Keynes, Woking, Dartford, Bristol, Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham, Southampton, Liverpool and Cardiff. Customers are advised to check their local websites for specific dates.

First Look: Grease UK and Ireland Tour

First look production images are released for the UK and Ireland tour of Jim Jacobs & Warren Casey’s iconic musical GREASE, directed by Nikolai Foster and choreographed by Arlene Phillips. Additional performances have been added in Dublin, Manchester, Newcastle and more.

GREASE has been seen by over 500,000 people in the West End, making it the Dominion Theatre’s most successful summer run since We Will Rock You . GREASE received 4 WhatsOnStage Award nominations for Best Musical Revival, Best Choreography for Arlene Phillips and Best Supporting Performer in a Musical for original cast members Jocasta Almgill and Paul French.

GREASE originally opened in Chicago in 1971, followed by a move to Broadway in 1972, where it received seven Tony Award nominations, including one for Best Musical. During the show’s eight-year run at the time, little known actors including Peter Gallagher, Patrick Swayze and John Travolta all appeared in the production, with Richard Gere understudying many roles before going on to star as Danny Zuko in the 1973 London premiere. GREASE was first performed at the Dominion Theatre in 1993 before transferring to the Cambridge Theatre in 1996. It returned to the West End, opening at the Piccadilly Theatre in 2007.

The 1978 film adaptation starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John is the fourth highest-grossing live action musical of all time. The musical features beloved songs, including Summer Nights , Greased Lightnin’ , Hopelessly Devoted To You and You’re The One That I Want .

Full cast announced for ”Grease” in the West End

The show opens this week

The WhatsOnStage Award-winning Grease is making a triumphant return to the Dominion Theatre in London this summer.

Joining previously announced 2022 returning cast members Dan Partridge as Danny, Olivia Moore as Sandy and Jocasta Almgill as Rizzo are Soloman Davy as Kenickie, while Callum Henderson will play Roger, Katie Brace will play Jan, 2022 returning cast members Jake Reynolds and Ellie Kingdon will play Doody and Marty respectively, George Michaelides will play Sonny, Olivia Foster-Browne will play Frenchy, Jayd’n Tyrone will play Eugene, Chloe Saunders will play Patty Simcox, Katie Dunsden will play Cha Cha, Liam McHugh will play Johnny Casino, Darren Bennett will play Vince Fontaine and Teen Angel at certain performances, and Rachel Stanley will play Miss Lynch.

Also in the cast are Michael Anderson, Alicia Belgrade, Kirsty Ingram, Jordan Isaac, D’Mila Lindsay-Walker, Carly Miles, Luke Redmore, Samuel Routley, Darcey Simmons, Sario Solomon, Joshua Steel, and Allana Taylor.

Australian stars Jason Donovan and Peter Andre will be reprising their roles, after their Dominion performances last year. Donovan will play the role of Teen Angel at certain performances from 14 August to 28 October, while Andre will play the roles of Teen Angel and Vince Fontaine at certain performances from 29 August to 19 October.

As already announced , Louise Redknapp will also play Teen Angel from 2 June to 29 July, excluding Mondays.

The Grease cast – Where are they now?

I t’s been over 45 years since the cast of Grease boogied across our screens, bringing us some of the greatest musical hits, including “You’re The One That I Want”, “Summer Nights”, “Beauty School Dropout” and more.

Since then, several of the key cast members have passed away, including Olivia Newton-John and Jeff Conway.

With the recent loss of Susan Buckner, who played Sandy’s (Newton-John) cheerleader friend Patty Simcox , we take a look back at the stars of the 1978 hit musical movie and see where they are now.

John Travolta (Danny Zuko)

By the time Travolta starred as charismatic greaser Danny Zuko, he was already a rising star thanks to his breakout role in the Seventies sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter and his leading role in the 1977 dance musical Saturday Night Fever. He’s since gone on to have a lucrative acting career, appearing in 1989’s family comedy Look Who’s Talking alongside the late Kirstie Alley , Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 Pulp Fiction and the 2007 remake of Hairspray .

At 70, Travolta is semi-retired. Although, he recently starred in the new action-adventure movie Cash Out and its forthcoming sequel, Cash Out 2: High Rollers. Meanwhile, it was announced in November that Travolta had been cast opposite Katherine Heigl in the forthcoming musical romcom That’s Amore!.

Olivia Newton-John (Sandy Olsson)

Years after Newton-John made her screen debut in 1965’s family musical Funny Things Happen Down Under , she landed the role of Sandy in Grease , which made her a household name . While managing to make some time for brief cameos in shows like Ryan Murphy’s Glee , the Australian native mainly pursued music, releasing a total of 26 studio albums.

Before her death from breast cancer in 2022 , aged 73, Newton-John was involved in numerous humanitarian causes, mainly involving animal welfare. She also became an advocate for various cancer charities following her own diagnosis.

Stockard Channing (Rizzo)

Well known for her portrayal of defiant and tough Rizzo, the leader of The Pink Ladies in Grease , Channing has continued to make her mark in powerful female roles. In the popular TV drama The West Wing she played fictional US First Lady Abbey Bartlet, for which she won an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. The now-80-year-old more recently made a brief appearance in an episode of the Max drama Julia , about the famous American chef Julia Childs.

Jeff Conway (Kenickie)

Conway had already played Kenickie, Danny’s best friend, in the stage version of Grease before being cast in the film adaptation. He later joined the cast of the five-season sitcom Taxi as struggling actor Bobby Wheeler.

Conway died of a drug overdose in 2011. He was 60.

Didi Conn (Frenchy)

After her portrayal of bubbly Frenchy in Grease , Conn went on to use her star power for good, joining Autism Speaks as its spokesperson following her son’s autism diagnosis.

Now 72, she’s maintained a light on-screen presence, making minor appearances in CBS’s Blue Bloods in 2022 and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit back in 2010.

Barry Pearl (Doody)

Pearl played Doody, one of Danny’s posse who donned the famous T-Bird leather jacket. After the success of the movie, he made notable appearances in TV shows, including Murder She Wrote , Beverly Hills, 90210 and the medical drama House. Pearl, now 72, eventually brought his musical talent to Broadway in the 2011 musical Baby It’s You! .

Dinah Manoff (Marty Maraschino)

Manoff made her film debut in Grease , starring as Marty. But that was only the beginning for her, as she later featured in the 1988 horror mystery Child’s Play , two episodes of the iconic TV show The Golden Girls and more. She even found her way into directing, helming an episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch , several instalments of Empty Nest and an episode of Minor Adjustments.

Manoff, 72, has since stepped away from screen roles with 2008’s romcom Bart Got a Room being her last credit.

Dennis Cleveland Stewart (Leo aka ‘Craterface’)

Stewart was only 46 when he died in 1994 due to complications from Aids. His passing marked one of the first major deaths of the main Grease cast.

He was best known for his portrayal of Leo, aka “Craterface”, the leader of the Scorpions, the rival gang to Danny’s T-Birds. Before his death, the actor and dancer had roles in the 1978 movie musical Sgt and an episode of MacGyver.

Kelly Ward (Putzie)

Since starring as Putzie in Grease , Ward, 67, has mostly turned his focus on working behind the camera. Besides his small roles in Magnum, PI and MASH , the rest of his TV credits come from his work as a voice director for children’s animated television shows. Some of the shows he’s worked on include Disney’s Mickey Mouse Funhouse , Curious George and Chill Out, Scooby-Doo!.

He also works as a musical theatre professor at the University of Southern California.

Susan Buckner (Patty Simcox)

Before she got into acting, Buckner was a beauty pageant queen, crowned Miss Washington in 1971 and a top ten finalist in Miss America 1972. In Grease, she played Patty Simcox, one of Sandy’s cheerleading friends in the cult musical classic.

Buckner went on to star in several TV shows, including  The Love Boat ,  B.J and the Bear ,  The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries , and  When the Whistle Blows . She starred in the 1981 Wes Craven horror film  Deadly Blessing alongside Sharon Stone and in 1989’s  Police Academy 6: City Under Siege.

In her later years, she directed children’s theatre and taught dance at a gym in Florida.

Buckner died on 2 May surrounded by family , her publicist said in a statement. A cause of death has not yet been shared. She was 72.

Michael Tucci (Sonny LaTierri)

Tucci was the second-oldest cast member of Grease . He was 31 when he was cast to play the 18-year-old Sonny. He later went on to appear in the 1985 limited drama The Insiders as well as the sitcom Flying Blind . He also spent 15 years teaching Fine Arts and Theatre Arts to California high schoolers. The now-retired teacher, 78, most recently starred in six episodes of the TV drama The Rich and the Ruthless.

Susan Buckner , best known to moviegoers as Grease ‘s bubbly cheerleader Patty Simcox, died peacefully surrounded by loved ones in Miami on May 2.

Her death was announced by family.

Buckner’s Grease character was the Rydell High cheerleading pal of Olivia Newton-John’s Sandy. The 1978 film also starred John Travolta and Stockard Channing.

She also appeared on such variety shows as The Mac Davis Show, Sonny and Cher and, as a dancer and synchronized swimmer, The Brady Bunch Variety Hour.

In 1977, she landed her signature role of perky Patty Simcox, Grease ‘s embodiment of pep and school spirit. “Do the splits, give a yell!” she cheered alongside Newton-John. “Show a little spirit for old Rydell! Way to go, red and white! Go Rydell, fight, fight, fight!”

Grease was the top-grossing movie of 1978 with $132.4 million in box office. Its soundtrack spawned four Top 5 singles, earned an Album of the Year Grammy nom and has sold more than 8 million units in the U.S. alone.

Buckner later was featured in several TV shows, including The Love Boat, B.J and the Bear, The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries , and co-starred in the ABC series When the Whistle Blows . She starred in the 1981 Wes Craven horror film Deadly Blessing alongside Sharon Stone and in 1989’s Police Academy 6: City Under Siege. She later stepped away from show business to raise a family.

Buckner is survived by her son Adam Josephs, daughter Samantha Mansfield, grandchildren Oliver, Riley, Abigail and Ruby as well as her sister Linda, daughter-in-law Noel Josephs, son-in-law Adam Mansfield and longtime partner Al.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Miami’s Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Susan’s honor.
