BLACK SABBATH: Australian Tour Dates Announced

BLACK SABBATH will embark on an Australian tour next April. Confirmed dates are as follows:

Apr. 25 - Entertainment Centre, Brisbane Apr. 27 - Allphones Arena, Sydney May 01 - Rod Laver, Melbourne May 04 - Perth Arena, Perth

General public tickets go on sale midday Thursday, November 8 and an exclusive presale will be available to Live Nation members from 9 a.m. Friday, November 2 until 5 p.m. Monday.

Original BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi , singer Ozzy Osbourne and bassist Geezer Butler are working with producer Rick Rubin on their first recording project together in 34 years for a tentative April 2013 release. According to Metal Injection , 15 songs have been written for the CD, with 12 making the final cut and the additional three serving as bonus tracks for different special editions. The band has one songtitle confirmed: "God Is Dead" .

Apparently, Iommi completed all 15 guitar tracks during the band's sessions in England earlier this year, and judging by the way most bands record, that would mean drums are done as well. Ozzy and Geezer are working to complete the tracks in five-song increments, with the first five being worked on currently at Shangri La Studios in Malibu, California. Ozzy is tracking vocals, with Butler writing all the lyrics.

As for Iommi , Ozzy told SiriusXM Liquid Metal DJ Jose Mangin that he spoke to the guitarist recently and he is in good spirits and recovery is coming along very well from his cancer scare earlier this year.

Iommi , Osbourne and Butler discussed their new album in a video interview posted at NME.com . Osbourne dropped a clue about the set's title, hinting, "Next year, 2013, is a good clue to what we're going to call the album."

As for how Rubin influenced the band's approach to writing together again, Butler explained, "He sat us down, put the first album on and said 'listen to this', imagine it's 1969, you've just done that, what would you do next?"

Iommi added, "It's taken on the flavor of the old stuff in the way we put things together, but with a different look on it."

BLACK SABBATH drummer Bill Ward announced earlier this year that he was declining to join his former bandmates for its scheduled 2012 dates, as well as the recording of a new album, due to a contractual dispute.

In addition to Download , the members of SABBATH played at Lollapalooza in early August in Chicago, their only U.S. gig. The rest of the scheduled SABBATH tour dates were played by Ozzy and billed as " Ozzy & Friends ."

THE ARCHIVE: Black Sabbath 1974 Australian Tour

black sabbath australian tour

This gig was part of a joint Paul Dainty Corporation & radio 2SM (Sydney) promotion, titled ‘British Rock ‘N Roll Month’, which featured Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep and Status Quo. I won tickets to all three gigs, Black Sabbath were by far the best act.

Unknown Sydney band AC/DC was support that night! They kicked serious butt! The sight of Angus Young in a school uniform complete with cap and backpack was most refreshing in an era where Disco music was all the craze. It was also one of Bon Scott’s earliest appearances after replacing Dave Evans as front man. The set ended with the most spectacular Angus Young solo ‘360 spin’ on the deck, without missing a note! Fuck me it was awesome!!!!!

Then, it was Black Sabbath’s turn to blow our minds! With infinitely more Marshall speaker boxes set up by roadies during the interval and the band fashionably late (as was the practise in those days) the entire full house was brimming with excitement… Kill the recorded music (usually Allman Brothers’ Band – Jessica) lights out, silence and finally its THE BAND, man! An explosion of sound, hitting you like a baseball bat to the ears!! Tomorrow’s Dream was the opening track, it sounded just like the record! What a production, especially that crystal clear, perfectly pitched, unique Ozzy Osbourne vocal! His ‘attitude’ & energy on stage was a major highlight of the gig.

Tony Iommi, wearing his signature ‘cross on a chain’ looked great, he was ‘in the zone’ but there was something oddly unique about his guitar playing style? I couldn’t work it out? I learnt later Tony lost the tops of his middle & ring fingers in a work accident and was forced revise his method of playing. What a genius! Hats off, respect to you Tony!

Geeza Butler, sporting the longest hair in the band was going off!! As a young 15-year-old, I had never seen a bass player perform live without a plectrum! Geeza tickled those strings with incredible fervour and precision! And of course, Bill Ward on drums. A powerful wrist drummer who was all ‘action & arms’! He performed a 5 minute (approx) drum solo that was the benchmark for all ‘stickmen’ to aspire to!

What a night, the crowd departed the arena soaking in sweat courtesy of one of the best hard rockin’ performances ever witnessed in this beautiful big land known as AUSTRALIA!

Black Sabbath Australian Tour

Black Sabbath Australian Tour

Black Sabbath - the band credited with creating heavy metal and one of the most influential bands of all time - today announced their widely rumoured and highly anticipated reunion for their first Australian shows in nearly 40 years.

Original band members – the Prince of Darkness himself: Ozzy Osbourne, bassist Geezer Butler and guitarist Tony Iommi will make a thunderous return to Australia in April 2013 for arena shows in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, in their first Aussie shows since 1974.

Hailing from Birmingham, England, Black Sabbath released their self-titled debut album on February 13, 1970. Their follow up album, the seminal masterpiece, UK #1 album Paranoid, featured the all-time rock anthems War Pigs and Iron Man as well as the title track, Paranoid.

Black Sabbath has sold in excess of 70 million records worldwide. More than 40 years on, this Iconic band continues to be held in the highest regard:

“Greatest Metal Band of All Time” – MTV

“Amongst the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time” – Rolling Stone

“Iron Man!One of the Greatest Metal Songs of All Time” – VH-1

“Paranoid is the birthplace of heavy metal” – Time Magazine

Black Sabbath was honoured with an induction into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005, followed by the US Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, where they were inducted by Metallica’s James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich.

In June 2012 Black Sabbath memorably headlined the 10th Download Festival at Donington before a crowd of 100,000. They followed that show in August with a much talked about headlining set at 2012’s sold-out Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago.

Black Sabbath is currently recording their first new studio album in more than 33 years, helmed by seven-time Grammy winning producer, Rick Rubin. The album is due for release in April 2013.

Black Sabbath will be performing in Brisbane , Sydney , Melbourne and Perth , with support from  Shihad .

UPDATE: Black Sabbath has heeded South Australian pleas, confirming that their first Australian tour in nearly 40 years will now include  Adelaide  for one show only!

Five Finger Death Punch Bow Out of Australian Tour Dates With Black Sabbath

Five Finger Death Punch were set to open for Black Sabbath on the band's tour dates for "The End" run, but it looks like that will not happen. A statement from promoter Live Nation to fans revealed that the group has bowed out of the run, citing a recent hospitalization for singer Ivan Moody  that led to the canceled dates.

The trek was scheduled to start April 15 in Perth, with shows at Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane to follow. The band also had shows booked separate from Black Sabbath in Melbourne and Sydney on April 20 and 22. Those are also affected.

According to Noise 11 , the statement released by Live Nation reads as follows:

Last Thursday, Five Finger Death Punch singer Ivan Moody was hospitalized in his hometown of Denver. He is expected to make a full recovery but it is with deep regret that Five Finger Death Punch will be forced to cancel their appearances in Australia, both with Black Sabbath and as headliners in Sydney and in Melbourne. It is especially disappointing to Five Finger Death Punch that they will not be able to play before Black Sabbath, a band Five Finger Death Punch has deep reverence for, on Black Sabbath’s last ever shows in Australia. Ivan and Five Finger Death Punch express their sincere apologies to both their fans and to the fans of Black Sabbath.

Ticket holders for Five Finger Death Punch's headlining dates at The Forum in Melbourne on April 20 and Luna Park in Sydney on April 22 will be contacted by relevant ticketing outlets to advise on refunds.

Though Five Finger Death Punch will not be part of the run, Black Sabbath will still play the scheduled April shows. No announcement has been made as to whether Sabbath will have another act open their dates.

Moscow attendance.

I got sent a question by a fan asking about the attendance at the Moscow gigs.  Here’s the question:

Moscow ’89 has always intrigued me. I know the story behind it and I’ve seen the concert…does anyone have an idea how many people actually saw the band in that 10 day run? I’d imagine attendance was huge being the new freedom that Russia was experiencing at the time.

I went and asked Neil Murray about it, since he keeps meticulous logs of shows and information about them.  Neil was kind enough to send me back the information.  Here’s his notes on attendance from these shows..

Neil: Note that at Moscow Olympic Stadium (a sports arena, not a stadium, really), apart from a few dozen VIPs at the front in armchairs, there was no-one on the arena floor, only in the seats in the ‘bleachers’ – the numbers would have been higher for the Moscow shows if they’d been allowed to fill the entire hall.

Neil also wanted to pass along these are his estimates, not any kind of official attendance.
