Ayia Napa (now officially transliterated into English as Agia Napa from the Greek) is a tourist location at the easternmost end of the Republic of Cyprus. It is widely considered the premier nightlife location of Cyprus .

Understand [ edit ]

amarillo travel ayia napa

Ayia Napa is Greek for "Saint Napa", the patron saint of the town, whose Venetian-era monastery is in the centre of the town, next to the square which today is clubbing central.

It's in the far eastern end of the Republic of Cyprus, east of the UK Sovereign Base Area Dhekelia. Ayia Napa is synonymous with clubbing on the island, having made a transition from a popular, all-ages family holiday destination to a "dance party capital", similar to Ibiza in Spain . In particular, it is popular as the summer holiday destination for followers of London's UK Garage music scene. British tourists are still the most prevalent here, but there are a lot of Russians holidaying in the area. It is also a long-time favourite among Scandinavians.

Beyond the clubbing, however, Ayia Napa attracts tourists world-wide because of its fun-loving (some would say, totally hedonistic) outlook by night and its sandy Mediterranean beaches by day.

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ].

Most travellers arrive at Ayia Napa by flights to the island of Cyprus that land at Larnaca airport. From there, it is a 45-minute taxi ride to Ayia Napa. Total fare should be around €45-55.

By road [ edit ]

  • Service taxis
  • Regular bus services IntercityBuses and OSEA [dead link] connect Ayia Napa to the main cities.
  • Rent a car. Prices are reasonable compared to other Mediterranean destinations, and will allow you to explore the area further. In the summer try and get an air-conditioned vehicle.

Get around [ edit ]

amarillo travel ayia napa

  • On foot. Ayia Napa is small enough to be considered just about walkable.
  • Bicycle. Widely available, lots of bicycle lanes.
  • Mopeds. Again widely available, and can be fun. However, these can be death traps if not driven with the appropriate care and responsibility. If in doubt of your driving skills and discipline, avoid them at all costs.
  • Car rental. These are useful in exploring the wider area, but traffic and parking in the centre of Agia Napa can be a problem. If you are thinking of drinking don’t risk driving, as local laws are very strict.
  • Taxis. Compared to most European cities these are quite affordable. Widely available. Make sure the driver turns the taxi meter on, or negotiate the total fare to your destination prior to departure.

Beaches [ edit ].

amarillo travel ayia napa

Ayia Napa attracted its first tourists (mostly Scandinavian) on the back of its incredible beaches. There is a selection of idyllic powder white sand beaches. The water is crystal clear with a lovely blue-green colour. The water tends to be quite shallow. Even if you are a swimming pool person, visiting Agia Napa’s beaches will surely convert you. Every beach will have a water sports centre so make sure you know the boundaries of the swimming and powerboat areas. Accidents have happened. Food, drinks, umbrellas and sunbeds are all available but during the season you need to get there early to reserve yours. The beaches are under the management of the city. Umbrellas and sunbeds are lent at municipal stands for each €2.5 per day. Bungee jumps come in and out of fashion.

  • Grecian bay . The closest sandy beach to the centre of Agia Napa, this is a beautiful beach that stretches along three coves to the east of the small fishing harbour. Not so fashionable as the two above, but just as nice a beach. ( updated Nov 2021 )

Buy [ edit ]

Shopping in Ayia Napa is comparatively expensive. There are many convenience stores or supermarkets. Many sell food and souvenirs side by side. They are more expensive than usual supermarkets in other locations though they heavily advertise their prices. It is hard to find food for homemade preparation like fresh fruit. Bigger supermarkets can be found in Paralimni around 6 kilometres to the north or in Larnaca.

Drink [ edit ].

Ayia Napa is famous for its nightlife. The Square should be your first choice for nightlife in the area. Although the area is a lot smaller than you might expect, there is a lot packed into the area and there are plenty of places to drink. Main bars include Bedrock, the Castle Club and Ice. Competition between various bars is phenomenally fierce and most bars employ promotional staff who will accost you on the street with offers of free shots or drinks. These people are exceptionally persistent and will even go as far as to grab you should you refuse to acknowledge them. Although they pose no threat they can be very annoying. Be particularly aware of those trying to promote Toga Toga or Moulin Rouge, the main strip clubs on the island. By all means, listen to the various PR people if you're partially interested because they can get you genuine deals in bars and clubs, but remember that their sole aim is to make you poorer and them richer, so politely tolerate but don't fall for their efforts to try and make friends with you. However, it can be amusing to distract them from their job and try to engage them in long conversation.

Clubs and bars are open until daybreak and as a result, the 'scene' doesn't really begin to pick up until around 23:00-ish. Patrons who are used to attending bars from 20:00 and heading to a club around midnight will need to reset their body clocks. The square is practically deserted until 21:30: most clubbers don't even bother going out until after 11:00, and most clubs won't open until after 01:00. Those expecting a cheap night out are also going to be slightly disappointed. Drinks prices are generally the same in most bars. Watch out in clubs. Admission fees can also be high, but canny clubbers should be able to find a good deal. Promo people can be quite helpful in this regard, and if you know where you're planning to go, you can usually pick up cheaper advance tickets. Some bars also have arrangements with clubs - one of the bars behind Castle (Red Square) offers buy-one-get-one-free on some of their drinks and will give you free entrance ticket to Castle or Starskys.

For an area that's fuelled by alcohol, Ayia Napa seems to suffer very little from anti-social behaviour. Provided you observe general bar and club etiquette you are extremely unlikely to encounter any trouble from other clubbers, locals or the police. The atmosphere in general is a very good, positive one, which offsets the fact that your night out is going to be more expensive than one in the UK.

Sleep [ edit ]

If you are looking to get away from it all and relax with your family in privacy, then a holiday villa may be the right choice for you. By renting a private villa, you will have your own kitchen, living/dining room, bedroom and in many cases your own private swimming pool. Renting a villa provides you, not only, with more space and privacy but may also be a more economical option rather than staying at a small hotel room. A villa can usually accommodate a minimum of 4 people, and the rental price is charged per week making it more cost-effective than staying at a hotel.

The Perfect Beach Escape in Ayia Napa, Cyprus

by Emily Cass | Jul 10, 2018 | Europe | 3 comments

The Perfect Beach Escape in Ayia Napa, Cyprus

Recently we spent 10 days relaxing in Ayia Napa, Cyprus and it was heaven. It was exactly what we’d hoped for and we left sunkissed, happy and 100% relaxed. It’s amazing what 30 degree days, salt water and sunshine can do for your soul!

This said, we barely scratched the surface of everything Cyprus has to offer as there are so many areas to explore and towns to visit but for us, this trip was about taking some time out to relax, so we stuck mainly to the area of Ayia Napa and Protaras , aside from one long day trip.

Here’s our travel guide to Ayia Napa, Cyprus listing the top things to do, the best restaurants, how to get around and where to stay.

Ayia Napa Town

Ayia Napa Main Street

Ayia Napa is one of the most visited areas in Cyprus. It is located on the far eastern end of the southern coast and has one heck of a reputation for nightlife as well as an abundance of stunning beaches. If there were 2 cities it reminded us of, it would be a cross between Phuket, Thailand and Cancun, Mexico .

The main street of Ayia Napa is lined with restaurants and it won’t take long before you notice a reoccurring theme of elaborately decorated/themed restaurants with enough room to sit the entire population of Cyprus. Don’t worry, we recommend some more tasteful restaurants below.

Margarita Bar

On top of the restaurants, you have many bars, clubs, a marina with 2 adjoining beaches, shops, grocery stores, public transport and a luna park. There is something to keep everyone entertained in Ayia Napa. Even if you don’t want the nightlife, Ayia Napa is a great place to base yourself for a relaxed, beach holiday.

Ayia Napa

Highlights of Ayia Napa

Below is an interactive map of the highlights of Ayia Napa, plus the restaurants we mention below.

1/ Nissi Beach

Nissi Beach

Nissi Beach is the most well-known beach in Ayia Napa and therefore is the most visited. With its white sand and turquoise shallow blue waters, you can understand why so many people love to spend a summer’s day here. Aside from one of the nicest places to swim, you also have a large resort, numerous restaurants and bars, water sports & plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas for rent (€2.50). During the summer (May – October), Nissi Bay Beach Bar holds many beach parties with famous DJ’s, guests artists and even the occasional foam party.

Nissi Beach

If you wish to stay right on Nissi Beach, consider spending your vacation at   Nissi Beach Resort . You won’t have to go very far to dip into those bright blue waters each day. Is there a better way to start your day than a dip in the ocean?

2/ Cape Greco

Cape Greco

Head away from the hustle and bustle of Ayia Napa and down the dirt roads to the gorgeous, unspoilt natural beauty that surrounds Cape Greco . Cape Greco can be found on a headland in the southeastern part of Cyprus. Perhaps the most famous parts of Cape Greco are the incredible sea caves that surround the sea of intense colours. If you’re feeling game, which a lot of people do, then you can jump into the water from the cave’s edge. It’s a little difficult to get back up so be careful on the rocks.

Natural Bridge

As well as swimming, you explore Cape Greco on one of the many walking trails or head off the beaten path with a bike. Visit the Kamara tou Koraka bridge , a natural occurring bridge similar to that of the fallen Azure Window in Malta  and the Ayii Anargyri Chapel , where many people choose to take wedding photos. Lastly, stop for an ice cream (essential) and take 100’s of photographs.

Cape Greco

Tip: If you wish to see the sea caves from sea level but don’t want to jump, consider taking a boat cruise.

3/ Konnos Bay

Konnos Bay

Konnos Bay , which can be found in Protaras (15 minutes from Ayia Napa) was by far our favourite beach in Cyprus. Secluded and beautiful, this beach was considerably less busy than that of Nissi Beach or Fig Tree Bay. There are no waves, the shallow water is sparkling & extremely clean (it’s a Blue Flag beach) making it the perfect place to take in all the glory, swim or relax in a pool float. There are also plenty of water sports available as well as public bathrooms, a kiosk and a restaurant.

Konnos Bay

Konnos Bay may have been our favourite but other notable beaches worth mentioning are:

  • Fig Tree Bay
  • Makronissos Beach
  • Ayia Thekla

4/ Troodos Mountain Range

Stepping away from the beach we decided to rent a car and venture out on a day trip to Troodos Mountain Range , the largest mountain range in Cyprus located in the centre of the island.

Troodos Mountain Range

It’s roughly a 2-hour drive from Ayia Napa, however, we took the opportunity to stop in a few places along the way such as Larnaca , Zygi (great fresh seafood on the water), Lissamol  and the very traditional, 1000-year-old village of  Lefkara which is known for its production of handmade linen embroidery and silverware.

Lefkara

Once you reach the mountains there are a ton of self-guided walks, viewpoints, extremely old pine trees, monasteries and churches nestled amongst the mountains.  The highest peak is Mount Olympus  which hosts 4 ski slopes for the winter months.  Troodos Square has a small selection of shops, restaurants, and hotels. It was a welcoming change from the heat of Ayia Napa.

Troodos Mountain Range

Tip: En route to the mountains, we suggest stopping at  Monagri Grape Farm . (shown below). Follow the barrels and you can’t miss it! You can sample, for free, a ton of local wines, cheeses, desserts and honey. The owners are knowledgeable and friendly and the vineyards are beautiful.

Monagri Grape Farm.

Note: You’ll have to rent a car or go with a tour company to get to the mountains. Public transport isn’t recommended.

5/ Visit Waterworld (I wish)

Waterworld Ayia Napa

Ok, so if there’s one thing that being pregnant hasn’t allowed me to do it’s spending the day running around a water park like a kid before Christmas. We’re such suckers for water parks and it had been some time since our last fun at the Atlantis in Dubai,  but to keep our little bub safe, we gave this one a miss. But if you’re anything like us and love a good water slide. Pay Waterworld a visit!

Can you? Just for me 🙂 After all, it’s one of the top water parks Europe has to offer. The water park is open daily from April – October and buses run directly from the centre of the town to the park. Entry €38 for adults and €24 for children (3-12 years).

6/ Eating!

Would it really be a blog post if we didn’t discuss food at some point? Cypriot cuisine resembles a combination of Greek & Turkish but has also been influenced by Middle Eastern cuisines such as Lebanese and Syrian. Summary? It’s delicious, fresh and one of our favourites. There are endless restaurants in Ayia Napa from small family run tavernas to extremely over the top themed restaurants which we avoided eating at.

Bed Rock Restaurant

Here are a few of our favourite restaurants in Ayia Napa.

  • Napa Tavern   (Ayia Napa) – Looking for local food in a cute restaurant? Come here! They have a great menu & very large portions. If you’re unsure what to order, go with the Meze (fish or meat). They’ll bring you 10+ dishes including the local favourites. You’re bound to like something!
  • Los Bandidos (Ayia Napa) – The best Mexican in Ayia Napa. It is always busy, especially on a weekend so get there early or book in advance! Strawberry margaritas are a hit.
  • Sesoula Kalamaki (Ayia Napa) –  A very informal restaurant on the marina serving local greek/Mediterranean meals such as souvlaki’s greek salads & mixed platters. It’s quick, casual, cheap & delicious. What more do you need?

Souvlaki

  • Blueberries (Ayia Napa) –  One of Ayia Napa’s most popular restaurants specialising in local Cypriot dishes. Tucked away off the main street. Be sure to make a reservation for the weekend.
  • Koralli Seafood ( Makronissos beach  ) – An extremely nice seafood restaurant with ocean views of Makronissos beach. Reasonable prices considering the location!
  • Zaatar Lebanese & Syrian Restaurant (Just past Nissi Beach ) – This may have been our favourite of them all. Opt for the mixed meat meze (or vegetarian) for €16. You’ll be delighted with a generous amount of mouthwatering food, all with unique flavours. It includes (but not limited too!) hummus, fattoush salad, chicken kebabs (to die for!), lamb kebabs, dips and freshly made Lebanese bread. A must visit in Ayia Napa.

Zaatar-Lebanese-Syrian

Calling all cheese lovers. Did you know Halloumi originated from Cyprus?! That means, it can be found everywhere. Mmm. Yes, please!

How to get around Ayia Napa

Ayia Napa

The public transport system in Cyprus is extremely efficient (& cheap). Tickets can be bought on the bus for €1.50 during the day and €2.50 in the evening after 9:00 pm . For routes inside of Ayia Napa, buses run every 20 minutes along the main road. Aside from the bus system, there are a plethora of options for getting around Ayia Napa such as a bicycle, motorbike, scooter, ATV, car or buggy.

Ayia Napa by Scooter

Prices range from €7 for a bicycle to €70 for a buggy. You’ll find many stores located in and around the main area of Ayia Napa or you can ask your hotel to help arrange a pickup. As you can see from the photo below, all of the main sights are quite close together and can be done in a day or two.

Note: Scooters, ATV’s and   Buggies cannot be taken onto the freeway and must stay in and around the area of Ayia Napa/Protaras.

Quad Safari Ayia Napa

Where to Stay in Ayia Napa

You’re spoilt for choice with accommodation in Ayia Napa. There are plenty of large resorts, hotels & villas, as well as smaller apartments both self-contained and serviced. As we planned to stay for over a week, we wanted something a little quieter than a large resort and with facilities that allowed us to cook.

Amethyst Hotel

We opted for Amethyst Napa Annex Apartments  which was located a 5-minute walk from the famous Mackronissis beach . It was a self-contained 1 bedroom apartment that had a fully stocked kitchen, a balcony (shown above) & a very clean, peaceful pool. Much to our surprise, we also had the added bonus of its sister hotel’s facilities! Winning! 3 weeks prior to our arrival (May 2018), they opened a brand new resort across the road,  Amethyst Napa Resort & Spa and we were able to use their pool, gym, sauna and enjoy a buffet breakfast each morning. We couldn’t have asked for more!

Amethyst Hotel Napa & Spa

Note: This hotel is located 5km outside of Ayia Napa town, however, there is a bus stop across the road and regular bus services into the town and it’s surrounding areas.

Ayia Napa, much like other vibrant cities of Cyprus, is cradled in a Mediterranean climate that unveils a palette of warm, sun-drenched summers and mild, gentle winters. The best time to travel to Ayia Napa is typically between June and September, when the weather is perfectly suited for beach activities and exploring the city’s lively nightlife.

  • Spring (March to May) : Spring heralds a season of mild warmth and blooming beauty, making it an opportune time to experience Ayia Napa’s natural vistas. From March till May, the weather is amiable, enticing the wanderer to explore the city’s charming streets and idyllic beaches without the summer crowds.

After that, he drove us around in the car to see the Agia Napa and Cape Greco areas and learn about the history. He is so knowledgable about the nature of Cyprus and is great at helping beginners learn to kayak. Overall, this was the highlight of our trip and we would definitely go back!

Memorial Day weekend 2024 travel will be busiest at these times: How to avoid traffic jams

amarillo travel ayia napa

If you’re traveling for Memorial Day weekend , be prepared to run into some crowds. The next holiday weekend – taking place May 25 to 27 – is slated to see a record-breaking number of travelers, according to AAA.

A projected 43.8 million Americans are expected to pack their bags for trips over 50 miles or more over the holiday weekend – a 4% increase from last year and close to 2005’s previous record of 44 million.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel, in a press release. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

Both roads and airports will be extremely busy, with a historic number of roadtrippers since AAA began tracking data in 2000. That’s 38.4 million drivers, up 4% from last year.

A predicted 3.51 million airline passengers are expected to hit the skies over the holiday weekend, a 4.8% increase from 2023. This will make for the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, AAA said.
