About the college.

The College of Hospitality and Tourism Management, formerly known as College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, at the Mindanao State University Main Campus, is one of the 16 colleges that house the excellent and competent students of the institution, providing quality and practical education that equips them towards the real world of tourism and hospitality industry.

It has 2 departments – the tourism and hospitality management departments, offering bachelor’s degrees in Tourism Management and Hospitality Management.

The College of Hospitality and Tourism Management also houses the MSU Pavilion, which serves as one of the outstanding venues for holding meetings and conferences, not only among the constituents of the campus, but for other clientele as well.

VMGO of the College

The College shall become a Center of Excellence in the fields of Tourism, Culinary Arts and Institutional Management and a Center for Development to help in the country’s pursuit of Socio-Economic Development through its training programs.

Along with Instruction, Research and Extension, the College shall pursue production/IG’s – in its laboratory facilities and pursue more International linkages and networks as it continuously produce nationalistic and world class workers, professionals and entrepreneurs who are morally upright as they contribute to the development of Tourism, Culinary and related Hospitality Institutions of the country.

Goals and Objectives

The College shall pursue world-class educational programs to align with the present realities of ASEAN and Globalization. However, the need to balance knowledge, skills and technology acquisition is to mold responsive and nationalistic entrepreneurs and workers who are globally competitive thereby helping Mindanao and the whole country achieve socio-economic development.

In alignment with this general objectives are the following goals:

1. To devise, initiate and conduct training programs intended to develop a reservoir of trained manpower for the industry in the MINSUPALA Region;

2. To provide extension programs, either through short term training seminars or direct technical assistance to existing hospitality enterprises in the area with the end view of upgrading their technical and managerial knowhow;

3. To manage, direct and operate existing or prospective hospitality facilities of the University on a commercial basis; to see to it that they are operated with efficiency to the end that they will be self-liquidating;

4. To assume responsibility for the reception, accommodation and billeting of official University guests;

5. To plan, establish and operate a Culinary “test” kitchen to serve as a laboratory for the research and testing of recipes using materials which shall be acceptable to all people in the area, particularly, the Muslims;

6. In cooperation with other government agencies and the private sector, to promote and stimulate tourism in the region;

7. To provide technical support to the President of the University, the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs or such other University Committees as maybe formed for the generation of projects intended to provide support for the establishment and / or expansion of the University , either thru tie-ups with other government agencies and / or private entities;

8. To provide technical assistance and support to other units and / or branches of the University in the design, construction, management and operation of their own cafeterias and / or guest houses;

9. To become a Provincial and Regional Training and Assessment Center of ARMM;

10. To provide Academic support to the K-12 and Senior High-Implementation particularly in Tech-Voc Program affiliated with the College offerings; and

11. To help provide technical assistance and support to promote the Halal Industry in Mindanao and the country as a whole.

About Tourism Management

The Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management program prepares graduates to become tour organizers, tourism entrepreneurs, and Hospitality specialists through a combination of liberal arts, business fundamentals, and technology training. Students gain knowledge of foreign languages, geography, and culture alongside business mastery to meet the unique demands of the tourism and travel industry. Additionally, the program integrates information technology and information systems courses, providing students with expertise in automation, digital processes, and proficiency in software for Global Distribution Systems. Partnerships with Yuchengco Group (YGC) of companies also provide networking opportunities for students.

Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management

• The program primarily prepares the student to be a tourism specialist. The student will be trained to be equipped for whatever role in the tourism industry, from airline flight attendants, to tour guides, to

Philippines takes steps to build up tourism in Mindanao

• Philippine Tour Operators Association have declared Mindanao as a safe destination to promote
• Department of Tourism to spur connectivity by improving accessibility and infrastructure
• Tourism Promotions Board to work with property development companies for accommodation standards

The Philippine government is paving the way for tourism in Mindanao, a pristine and undeveloped part of the southern Philippines that has had a troubled image.

After several travel caravans to various parts of Mindanao, Philippine Tour Operators Association (Philtoa) president Fe Abling-Yu, concluded that it is safe, and has listed it as one of the new destinations to promote.

In late September, all five of Mindanao’s regions were present at Philtoa’s 33rd Philippine Travel Mart in Manila, stealing the limelight with their colourful booths and costumes, quality artisanal wares, and tour packages even in areas previously off to tourism.

“Imagine the impact on local communities and their livelihood, on small and medium enterprises, on the local economy, on investments, if Mindanao is given the chance to wield its full tourism potential,” Abling-Yu commented.

The need to change perceptions While areas of armed conflict still exist, tourism stakeholders need to help change misconceptions and create awareness that Mindanao also has safe tourist spots such as Siargao, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Camiguin, Bukidnon, GenSan, and Zamboanga.

Recently added to this growing list is the island province of Basilan, which used to have an exaggerated image of violence. Today, demand is growing for tour packages twinning Basilan’s capital, Isabela de Basilan, with its gateway port, Zamboanga City, noted Charles Anthony C Rotoni, senior tourism operations officer, Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula).

“When you see Basilan, it is different from how it is perceived. We have tourism circuits that include Basilan for farm tourism, Yakan indigenous culture, gastronomy and its clean, pristine beaches,” said Errold Lim Bayona, tour director of Itravel Tourist Lane and manager of All For South Consultancy.

Bayona said that although his companies are in Zamboanga Peninsula, they are also expanding to the neighbouring island provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi because tourism products are already available there.

Zamboanga too, used to have a spotty image many years ago, but successfully transitioned into a safe, popular destination, with varied offerings of nature, secluded pink beach, seafood delights, and cultural heritage from Christianity and Muslim backgrounds, among others.

Rotoni said that apart from Basilan, DOT Region 9 is also starting to promote the cities of Dapitan and Dipolog, both in Zamboanga del Norte. These safe havens have oft been overlooked due to limited access and infrastructure.

“We’re trying to spur connectivity under DOT’s thrust on (improving) accessibility and (building) infrastructure,” shared Rotoni.

For instance, national carrier Philippine Airlines currently flies to various points in Mindanao, and is helping to encourage domestic tourism by adding more flights to and from Tawi-Tawi, Cotabato and Jolo.

Government assistance For Mindanao to gain a larger foothold on the tourism map, DOT’s Rotoni said they will be pushing for a Northern Luzon Travel Exchange next year for its main domestic source market.

“We see the potential of this market so we nurture and grow it. Tourists who visited are the best bet in telling the story on the ground and world-of-mouth advertising instead of relying on photos and videos,” Rotoni explained.

Tourism Promotions Board (TPB)’s new chief operating officer, Margarita Nograles, added: “We have to make sure that when we say Mindanao is safe, it is safe.”

“A quick solution for us to show to the world that Mindanao is safe is to bring more fam tours and let international tourists enjoy meaningful experiences in our region…. especially now that we’re rooting for sustainable, community-based tourism,” Nograles pointed out.

Stakeholders also understand that Mindanao has miles to go in achieving lasting peace and building tourism hardware.

Hence, apart from destinations that are already known to foreigners like Siargao, its target market is mainly domestic and viable markets in certain Asian countries for halal tourism, and those not sensitive to travel advisories.

This comes as Western countries have red-flagged parts of Mindanao in their travel advisories and travel insurance for their citizens excludes portions of Mindanao.

Regardless, TPB is pushing forward with a Colors of Mindanao campaign to highlight indigenous people, and reiterate that Mindanao is a safe destination for visitors.

Charles Aames Bautista, TPB’s deputy chief operating officer, added that Mindanao is also being explored as a “MICE destination”, which is why the “next MICECON will be held in Davao next year”.

“If it’s any indication, even the private sector is echoing our sentiments. We just had a meeting with a few online platforms and (are) working with property development companies to set the standards for accommodations.

“A lot of travel agents are creating Mindanao tours and circuits but if you don’t have a place to stay, it’s no use. That is why accommodation and food availability are always in conjunction with tourism circuits,” Bautista explained.

Jolo is the capital of Sulu Province , one of the most underrated destinations in the Philippines. It’s one of the best Mindanao tourist spots to visit for backpackers and those who love exploring off-the-beaten-track destinations.

The main charm of this coastal town is in its unique food, culture, and architecture. Here you can taste its local delicacies (such as the bangbang, a set of Tausug pastries), stroll along the local market, and visit the capitol and church. You can also take a boat trip to discover the islands in Panglima Tahil , which are some of the most beautiful and pristine islands in the country. There are also white-sand beach destinations nearby that can easily rival the kinds of Boracay.

Aliwagwag Falls is a sight to behold. It stands at about 1100 feet with over 80 tiers, making it the highest waterfall in the Philippines.

This is a great place to swim and enjoy the nature. For more adventure, you can ride the 680-meter long zipline across the waterfall and cross the monkey bridge where you can view the rushing waterfalls below.

Aside from being a tourist attraction in Davao, this waterfall also provides water for irrigation to the surrounding rice fields and renewable hydropower to local communities.

Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary is a UNESCO World Heritage Site found in San Isidro, Davao Oriental. It features interesting landscapes, including a pygmy forest — one of the few existing in the world. It’s also home to various flora and fauna, some of which is endemic to the area, as well as the Philippine Eagle, Philippine Cockatoo, and more.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA) -- Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco reiterated Mindanao's significance in the country's tourism transformation.

Frasco highlighted during her address at the second Mindanao Tourism Expo (MTEx) Mindanao's rich biodiversity and vibrant culture, citing it as a source of national pride for the Filipinos.

Acknowledging the region's vast potential, she stated that upon assuming the role of Department of Tourism secretary, one of her initial priorities was the opening, promotion, and development of Mindanao.

Frasco emphasized that MTEx is a flagship program of the Marcos administration that recognizes the massive potential of Mindanao. The expo, which showcased the diverse tourist attractions of Mindanao, ran from April 26 to 28 in Cagayan de Oro City. It was hosted by the DOT- Northern Mindanao.

She said the MTEX ​is crucial in realizing the president's tourism vision and positioning the Philippines as Asia's next tourism powerhouse.

Frasco also stressed that the MTEx is more than just an exhibition; it includes additional features such as business-to-consumer and business-to-business interactions, as well as post-familiarization tours, so that stakeholders and visitors will spread the word that Mindanao is fully prepared for tourism.

"While we continue to promote our award-winning and well-known destinations, we ensure that no one is left behind in the development of tourism in the Philippines, which is precisely why we have founded the Mindanao Tourism Expo to provide opportunities for our destinations in this region and, as well, to open the eyes of the Philippines to the beauty of Mindanao," she said.

The Secretary further elaborated that within the framework of the National Tourism Development Plan of the Marcos administration, the DOT has pinpointed key focus areas for development. These include infrastructure, connectivity, digitalization, enhancement of the overall tourism experience, and strengthening tourism governance.  She stressed that this entails collaborative efforts between the national government, local government, and private tourism stakeholders.

Specific to the goals of tourism development in Mindanao, Frasco highlighted the implementation of various infrastructure projects aimed at both attracting tourists and enhancing their experience for repeat visits. Among these projects is the establishment of tourist rest areas (TRAs). The first TRA in Mindanao was established in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon, followed by another in Samal Island, Davao del Norte.

"We are very happy to announce that this year and in the succeeding years, we plan to construct tourist rest areas all over the Philippines, including other areas here in Mindanao," Frasco added.

Frasco also announced that local government units (LGUs) in Mindanao, such as Isabela City in Basilan, Davao City in Davao del Sur, Samal Island and Tagum City in Davao del Norte, and San Agustin in Surigao del Sur, were recently awarded financial grants under the Tourism Champions Challenge program. This nationwide campaign incentivizes LGUs with proposed tourism infrastructure projects that prioritize sustainability, inclusivity, and resilience. (APB, PIA Region 10)

DOT vows more support for Mindanao tourism

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — The Department of Tourism (DOT) is pushing all the buttons to bring international and local tourists to visit Mindanao, as the peace and security situation in the region has tremendously improved compared to a decade ago.

“The truth is, Mindanao is peaceful and the island is ready for domestic and international tourists,” Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco said during the opening of the second Mindanao Tourism Expo (MTEx) here on Friday.

The expo, which ran from April 26 to April 28, sought to promote the tourism destinations of Mindanao’s six regions. It featured tourism spots, “pasalubong” (gift) products and discounted tour packages. Promotional displays from regions outside of Mindanao were also showcased in the expo.

Frasco said that given its vast potential, tourism could lift Mindanao’s economy to greater heights, which was why the DOT, Department of National Defense, and Department of the Interior and Local Government had signed a joint agreement on Mindanao tourism development, with peace and order as the foundation.

Outdated advisories

Frasco explained that the national government has been doing all it can to work with local governments to change the perception of tourists that Mindanao is a dangerous place to visit, as the country’s soldiers and police have done their best to keep the region safe for its residents and for tourists.

Tourist arrivals in Mindanao, especially foreigners, are tempered by travel advisories issued by their respective governments. To address this, the DOT has had various engagements with foreign dignitaries, showcasing tourism destinations across the island to show that it is peaceful and ready to cater to tourists, said Frasco.

“We have invited dignitaries, members of the embassies that have existing travel advisories against the Philippines and Mindanao so that they can see for themselves that their advisories are outdated and that it is time to lift and revise those,” Frasco emphasized.

Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Rolando Uy also assured foreign tourists that Mindanao’s local governments are doing their share of maintaining peace and order “because we wanted you to feel safe as you enjoy our destinations.”

Data from the DOT showed that in 2022, at least 7.1 million tourists visited Mindanao. A key destination region is Northern Mindanao, or Region 10 (comprising the provinces of Camiguin, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte and Bukidnon, and the highly urbanized cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan), which hosted around 3 million tourists annually just before the COVID-19 pandemic struck in March 2020.

Tourist arrivals in Northern Mindanao dropped to only 650,000 in 2020 due to lockdowns and other health-related travel restrictions. However, in 2023, the arrivals in the region picked up to 2.5 million, said Juan Carlos Valentino Baclig, marketing and promotion head of DOT-10.

According to Baclig, the expo hoped to replicate the success of the first MTEx, which brought more tourists to Mindanao.

“Hopefully, by the third and fourth quarters of this year, we can see an increase in tourist arrivals after the expo. Just like the first expo in Davao, our tourist arrival increased from 1.6 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2023,” he said.

“Whether you seek adventure or cultural explorations, Mindanao has so much to offer,” said Misamis Oriental Gov. Peter Unabia.

This is my favorite place in Mindanao because you will be able to feel the island life here. You can also visit the wonderful Sugba lagoon, Sohoton cave, and Bucas Grande.
