Safari Lodges in the UK & Overnight Stays at Safari Parks

A safari tent in a grassy meadow

If you’re an animal lover looking for a unique and thrilling experience in the UK, spending the night in a safari lodge might be just what you’re looking for.

Safari parks in the UK offer an opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the world’s most majestic creatures, while UK nature reserves display the best of British wildlife. But what makes both of these experiences truly unforgettable is the opportunity to spend the night in a safari lodge, surrounded by the sounds and thrill of the wild.

In this blog post, we’ll explore some of the best safari lodges in the UK, as well as safari parks and nature reserves that offer overnight stays, so you can plan your next adventure with ease.

5 of the UK’s best safari lodges

If you had your hopes pinned on a safari this year you needn’t miss out – as you can still get up close to elephants, cheetahs and lions in wildlife lodges across the UK

1. West Midland Safari Park

safari lodge holidays uk

Cheetahs at West Midland Safari Park (West Midland Safari Park)

Tanzania might not be an option this year but you can still drive 6.5km through West Midland Safari Park near Birmingham, which is home to zebras, Congo buffalo, Indian rhino and critically endangered Bactrian camels.

To see some of the animals at night – after most visitors have left for the day – you can now stay over in one of the park’s eight new safari lodges.

As well as the lodges, the animals’ habitats have also been renovated, so the park’s three African elephants now have access to an outdoor paddock and drinking pool 24 hours a day. Six of the lodges have large windows and an outdoor deck overlooking the pool, so you can observe Latabe, Five and Sutton as they drink. The two-storey lodges blend in with the paddock as they feature thatched roofs, wooden floors, woven rugs and straw lampshades. The two other lodges overlook the cheetahs’ lair, with floor-to-ceiling windows in the bedrooms providing a perfect view of cheetahs Azrael and Bappe. A Red Panda Cottage is also due to open in spring 2021.

For more information visit West Midland Safari Park .

2. Longleat

safari lodge holidays uk

A white rhino (Shutterstock)

Once the grounds of a 16th century manor house, Longleat opened as a safari park in 1966. Sandwiched between Bath and Salisbury, the reserve is four times the size of London’s Richmond Park, and home to game more at home on the plains of Zimbabwe.

Visitors can drive in their own vehicle or hop on a safari bus to see tigers, white rhinos and lions. Alternatively, you can join a walking safari to see lemurs, African tortoises and the black-headed Somali sheep.

For a close up of the zebras and giraffes, however, book a night in a cottage. There are three to choose from: East Lodge, which includes a guided tour of the grounds, and Keeper’s House and Keeper’s Cottage, both of which include a guided safari tour in a 4×4.

For more information visit Longleat .

3. Port Lympne Safari Park

safari lodge holidays uk

Friendly giraffes (Shutterstock)

Swap Kenya for Kent on a safari at Port Lympne Safari Park on the edge of the Kent Downs. Covid rules permitting, you can choose one of three ranger-led safaris, during which you will see black rhino, wildebeest, ostriches and critically endangered Rothschild giraffes.

For a more intimate experience, stay overnight and see the animals once most guests have gone home. The 243-hectare estate is home to wigwams, shepherds’ huts, a treehouse hotel and an igloo-style ‘bubble’ designed for stargazers. Depending on the accommodation you choose, you might be able to observe Amur leopards from Leopard Creek or watch TV side by side with Adras, Oudrika and their offspring on the other side of an enormous window in Lion Lodge.

For more information visit Port Lympne Safari Park .

4. Camp Baboon

safari lodge holidays uk

Okapi (Shutterstock)

Set within the Wild Place Project, this camp on the outskirts of Bristol is home to lemurs, pygmy goats, eland and okapi, which is endemic to the Congo.

The site has 10 wishbone-shaped cabins for overnight guests, who can help feed some of the animals on a morning tour before the site opens to the public. You can also join an evening tour and rangers’ workshops to learn bush craft skills under a canopy in the woods and around a firepit. As well as entry to Wild Place Project, overnight guests can visit Bristol Zoo Gardens for free, too.

For more information visit Camp Baboon .

5. ZSL London Zoo

safari lodge holidays uk

An Asiatic lion (Shutterstock)

There are only 520 Asiatic lions left in Gir National Park in Gujarati in the north west of India. While you may not be able to travel there at the moment, you can see a pride of the endangered animals in Land of the Lions, a breeding centre inside ZSL London Zoo.

The London enclosure is modelled after the national park, complete with railway tracks, a corrugated roof, train station ticket hall and a crumbling temple. Visitors stroll on raised boardwalks over the lions to a viewing area. You can also spend the night in one of nine cabins in Gir Lion Lodge. A stay includes three tours that take place once the zoo is closed to the public.

For more information visit ZSL London Zoo .

Best safari park lodges and hotels in the UK where you can see the likes of elephants, cheetahs and giraffes right from your room

Cheetahs peer into a lodge through a window at the new West Midlands Safari Park accommodation

A safari holiday is one of those trips that's on everyone's bucket list - and there are some pretty incredible safari lodges to dream about.

However, safaris can be seriously expensive trips, not to mention that holidays abroad aren't exactly on the cards for Brits right now.

The good news is that there are some brilliant UK safari parks where you can actually spend the night, and enjoy views of the like sof elephants, cheetahs and giraffes right from your room!

Then there are the lodges themselves with glamorous interiors, and extra perks such as exclusive tours of parks and zoos.

We take a look at some of the UK's best safari lodges and hotels to have on your radar for a memorable trip...

West Midlands Safari Park

West Midlands Safari Park has opened eight luxurious new lodges, all of which offer direct views over animal habitats.

Six of the lodges look out to the elephants, who often come to the nearby pond for a drink, while two overlook the cheetahs' habitat.

You can watch the animals from your bedroom, or opt to take in the views from the open plan living room and dining area with floor-to-ceiling windows so you don't miss anything. (You can take a sneak peek inside the lodges here ).

Prices will start from £171 per adult and £147 per child for a night's stay. You can find out more on safari-lodges.co.uk .

Port Lympne, Kent

Port Lympne offers up some luxurious lodges complete with a master bedroom and open plan living area, which offer direct views across animal habitats. Those staying in the Lion or Tiger Lodges can enjoy huge floor-to-ceiling windows so you can get up close to the animals without leaving the sofa, while the adults-only Giraffe Lodge comes with a private deck from which you can watch the giraffes.

Other perks include exclusive out-of-hours access to the Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve, access to the safari parks and a safari experience included as part of the package.

There are also treehouse stays and glamping pods available.

Prices vary depending on lodge of choice. You can find out more on aspinallfoundation.org/port-lympne .

Longleat has opened some luxury cottages in the heart of its safari park, from which you can watch animals such as giraffes as they wander around the grounds.

There are also perks such as a guided safari tour of the park, park tickets for your stay, and breakfast being included.

As reported by SomersetLive , prices for the Keeper’s Cottage prices start at £500 per night, and £750 for Keeper’s House (which includes an exclusive 4x4 tour of the Safari Park).

You can find out more at longleat.co.uk .

ZSL London Zoo

London Zoo's lodges don't offer direct views of animals, but they are located right by the lion enclosure so you can listen out for sounds from the creatures.

There are plenty of perks for budding zoologists such as exclusive tours of the zoo, a chance to feed animals their breakfast, discounts on meet-the-animals experiences, and more.

You can find out more on zsl.org/zsl-london-zoo .

Chessington Safari Hotel

Chessington Safari Hotel's rooms offer views across the resort's Wanyama Reserve where plenty of animals reside from zebras to meerkats.

The hotel offers both standard and themed rooms, the latter including Tiger, Giraffe, Zebra and even Penguin themes, and even rooms inspired by The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom. (It's actually in our top picks of the UK's best themed hotels for families too!).

Perks for guests include entry to the theme park, zoo and SEA LIFE centre, breakfast, and early access to rides before they open to the public.

You can find out more on chessingtonholidays.co.uk .

Of course, our parks are totally dog friendly too, so Fido doesn’t have to miss out.

There’s no shortage of walkies opportunities. Be sure to explore the gorgeous Lyndhurst Heath on its three-and-a-half mile circular walk. For a quick refreshment, the pup-friendly Rockingham Arms are only a short walk from Green Hill Farm Holiday Village. If you're visiting us at Parbola, Trevaskis Farm Restaurant is just 5 minutes up the road in the car from ours and lays on the best local produce.

After a good day’s exploration, that log burner is perfect for a sleepy pooch to curl up in front of...

"We stayed in a safari tent with a hot tub. The accommodation is well equipped, and spacious we also got a welcome pack on arrival - our dogs also got little goody bags with treats and a tennis ball each!"
“Simply put, the best camping trip I’ve ever had in the UK. We stayed in one of the new Safari Tents which were immaculate and included everything you’d need” Rich via TripAdvisor

Safari tent holidays in the New Forest — ancient woodland, winding walks, charming villages.

After you’ve made your morning coffee, step on your safari tent’s private decking and say ‘hi’ to your neighbours — the New Forest native ponies!

Step off park and you’re immediately immersed in over 150 square miles of world-famous forest and heathland, with woodland walks, local taverns and fun-filled attractions around absolutely every corner. Hire one of our bikes and head out into nature!

The Bolderwood Radnor Trail takes you through ancient and ornamental woodland, passing gorgeous hardwood trees dating back to the 19th century. For a relaxing stroll, head out and try the Burley Village Walk. A quintessential little New Forest gem, with tea rooms, gift shops and art galleries.

In search of history? Calshot Castle might whet your whistle — an artillery fort constructed by Henry VIII in the 16th century. If you’re a fan of charming little villages or motor vehicles, a trip to Beaulieu should be high up your list, too. Their National Motor Museum is a day out itself!

For fun-filled family adventure, the New Forest Water Park might be worth a visit, with wakeboarding, an aqua park, kayaks and fun inflatables.

There’s just so much — too much! — to do when you book a luxury safari tent holiday with a hot tub. When you’re with us on-park, be sure to ask our team members for their recommendations.

Safari tent holidays under Cornish treetops — tranquil woodland, winding walks, a short drive from Hayle

Why not wake up with under wooded glades? Take the family glamping in one of our extra special safari tents inspired by the beauty of Africa and packed with little treats. The biggest of them all being your own electric hot tub.

The home of seal colonies, world-class surf destinations, endless incredible independent eateries and a charming harbour port, St. Ives is the ultimate day trip a 25 minute drive away from ours. Then there’s historic Hayle, a 15 minute drive away, with its Paradise Park, as well as a selection of incredible, dog-friendly beaches.

If you're looking for a family day trip that's even closer to ours, Cornish Trevaskis Farm is 5 minutes up the road. With animals to see and a 'pick your own' to enjoy, it doesn't get much more rural Cornwall than this.

There's so much on our doorstep just waiting to be explored. Our team are all based locally so don't be shy, ask them for their recommendations. We promise that they're friendly!

Fancy a different sort of getaway?

As well as having a range of other accommodation available at Green Hill Farm and Parbola, you can escape to our Norfolk and Cornwall parks.

Safari Lodges

You won’t just find safari lodges in Africa – the concept and the type of structure can really work anywhere - even the green Great British countryside!  Take a look at what’s on offer and open up a world of possibilities.

2 Bedroom Luxury Safari Tent in a Deer Park near Crediton in Rural Devon

What a safari lodge offers, wherever its location, is a unique glamping experience – essentially you’re in a large tent (some of them are huge, some more intimate) but more often than not you also have access to comfortable beds, modern washroom facilities and the kind of little luxuries that could put a boutique hotel to shame.

The best UK family glamping sites to check out in 2024

Take away the fuss with these fun British stays for all the family

a room with a bed and a ladder

Fun, fuss-free, cool and convenient, there are many reasons you need to add glamping to your trip possibilities this 2024 with them also generally working out cheaper in the school holidays than a trip abroad.

With the UK packed with family-friendly places to travel to, there's plenty of destinations to choose from, leaving you in control of just how long you and your brood travel because let's face it, long distances with children are never fun.

There's also plenty of options when it comes to choosing your holiday activity level, letting you pick from an action-packed site full of activities the children will love or even something close to a beach for a more chilled vacation approach. There are also some really unique options if you're looking for something altogether more special.

And the best part about glamping is the fun and unusual facilities, like huge teepees or wooden lodges you get to stay in and family glamping with hot tubs for you to relax together, making it a really memorable escape for everyone.

Here's our selection of the best family glamping spots to check out in the UK.

Stargazer's Retreat, Isle of Wight

stargazer glamping retreat in isle of wight

For a truly special glamping experience that you'll want to book time and time again, check out this unique Isle of White option. A luxurious yurt nestled in the southern Isle of Wight, this location has everything – views, comfort (we're talking king sized beds) and fun for all the family.

For the wow factor, they have fully equipped kitchens, a mezzanine level for the children complete with a Toono window to gaze at the moon and stars, a BBQ and two alfresco bathtubs. In fact, there's something special at every corner.

It's a minimum booking of two nights but we don't think that's a decision you'll regret. Perfect for all year round, this is the ideal trip for a special occasion.

Heydon Grove Farm, Norfolk

heydon grove farm glamping

If it's a country escape you're looking for than Feather Down's Heydon Grove is the ultimate stay. Located in idyllic Norfolk, you'll be surrounded by the beautiful countryside and be only a short drive away from the coast.

On site you can stay in one of four canvas hideaways that will have everything you need plus plenty of nature fun for the little ones. This includes access to lots of animals including cows, chicken and sheep and their most recent addition of donkeys. There's also a park and a covered sandpit for extra family-friendly activities.

Buzzard Lodge, Brecon Beacons

glamping lodge, brecon beacons

A real outdoors adventure would be this incredible safari lodge in the beautiful mountains of Wales.

A real chance to get back to nature, your Buzzard Lodge is an eco-friendly spot with a private wood-fired hot tub and veranda. Located on a farm, your little ones will be able to ignite their love for the great outdoors with the chickens and wildlife pond nearby.

Pick from a range of two to six-person lodges which all feature a fully equipped kitchen, wood burner, lounge area and the ultimate outdoor fire pit, perfect for s'more making.

Private, luxurious and idyllic are three words you'll be using to describe this place.

Cedar Lodge Treehouse, Devon

devon glamping tree house

Elevate your camping experience (quite literally) with this impressive tree house stay. Complete with three bedrooms, each lodge has stunning private views and will become your own little excluded sanctuary.

It's fully equipped with everything you could need, a little home-from-home, and even has it's own wood-fired hot tub to relax in.

Children won't be bored either – it's a short drive to the local beach, plus there's also an on-site play area, trampoline, football goals and table tennis. They even have permission to build their own fire to toast marshmallows.

A true gem of a stay and if you don't believe us, check out the five-star reviews.

Lee Wick Farm

lee wick farm glamping pod

Need an escape from the city for the weekend? Looking to explore the Essex coast a bit more? Then this is your perfect camping spot.

Lee Wick Farm has a range of glamping facilities including their Lushna Suites, Cargopods, Megapods and Armadillas (sleeps 2 people only). They're all snug, comfortable and most even feature a BBQ and hot tub.

Tan y Wawr - Onnen, Snowdonia

wales glamping

Forget escaping to the hills when you can escape in them. This amazing little find is perfect for a special occasion or if you're really looking for a place to reconnect as a family.

Enjoy the stunning scenery around you, soak up all that nature has to offer and unwind in the private and secluded jacuzzi.

Rose Pod Hobbit House, Cornwall

wooden hobbit house for glamping

A simple wooden pod situated on Summer Valley holiday park (a small family-run campsite) which has plenty to offer including a tea and tequila bar.

The Hobbit House is situated in the heart of Cornwall with plenty of outdoor space for your family to roam. You will have four luxurious beds (please note you will need to bring your own bedding), your own private deck and essential tea and coffee making facilities.

Loveland Farm, Devon

loveland glamping pod

This little eco farm will truly win over you and your family. Situated on Devon's beautiful coastline, Loveland has a variety of pods on offer for your stay. With small domes for a couples get away or larger ones sleeping up to seven, you will get your own private shower, kitchen, plenty of stunning views and a whole bunch of memories you'll never forget.

The facilities here really set it apart from the rest as it has it's own environmentally friendly heated pool, a woodfired pizza oven and a whole selection of nature walks to soak up.

Hares Rest, Lake District

lake district glamping

We're obsessed with this cute and cosy little pod situated in the picturesque Lake District . With endless opportunities for nature walks and exploring, you and your little adventurers can also enjoy paddleboarding, kayaking and picnics. There's also plenty of local attractions nearby to enjoy.

The pods themselves feature an open-plan living area and kitchen, a double bed and fun bunk beds for the kids too. There's also a dedicated bench, BBQ, fire pit and outdoor seating area for those dining alfresco moments as you soak up the stunning views.

Pear Tree Lodge, Somerset

a woodland lodge in somerset available for glamping

This little wooden cabin looks like something straight out of a movie and we feel more wholesome from just looking at the pictures.

Featuring two floors (including an exciting mezzanine level for the kids), a stunning porch area perfect for those morning cups of tea and a fully-equipped kitchen, you can escape all your normal woes and chores as this place allows you to press the reset button.

Most interiors in the well-equipped one-to-three-bedroom holiday homes are made cosy with fireplaces and feature verandas to take in scenic views of the sprawling country estate.

Avid walkers or cyclists can explore its hills and spacious open fields from the doorstep of the rural hideaways; Carmarthenshire is known as the National Botanic Garden of Wales, after all, and cycling trails are plentiful.

Couples can relax in the on-site leisure facilities with a dip in the hot tub or pool before heating up in the sauna or split the price among friends for an idyllic budget getaway in the heart of Wales.

Whether on a spa break, country getaway or simple escape from reality, kick your feet up and unwind in the expansive living spaces of the home-from-home rooms. Private terraces also offer the chance to enjoy al fresco dining while taking in the view.

Just 25 minutes from Glasgow Airport, the freshwater loch and its surroundings are home to tiny islands, steep mountains and enchanting forests spread over 400 acres. Luxuries include five-star facilities such as the Thermal Experience at the Cameron Spa and dining across four restaurants and bars for those nights when you just can’t be bothered to cook.

From £1,122 for four adults to enjoy a three-night stay.

Shepherd’s Hut Scarborough, Yorkshire, England

Best for: remote escapes .

Lose yourself in the North Yorkshire countryside with a remote stay in your own slice of Stepney Hill Farm. The compact Shepherd’s Hut studio room sleeps two and features a cosy wood-burning stove, a private external bathroom and a kitchen and dining area.

With a picnic bench outside for summer BBQs, facilitated by the on-site butchers, and the addition of a hut-side hot tub, switch off and embrace the secluded spot with distant views of the coast and working farm fields. Not far from two sandy beaches, the isolated escape enjoys peace and quiet – bar the flock of sheep – with the option to take a long lunch at the farm’s tearoom if you fancy a change of scenery.

Hinterland Cabin, Snowdonia, Wales

Best for: romantic retreats.

A short drive from Anglesey, Hinterland Cabin screams (or, rather, croons) idyllic romance for couples who want to enjoy a retreat for two to Snowdonia. The luxury retreat in Conwy, a medieval market town, is set in enchanting woodlands overlooking the valley and cliffsides below. Inside, fresh flowers and fluffy bathrobes await your arrival at the North Wales staycation spot. Chic interior furnishings include oak beams, gold-accent decor and a spacious walk-in shower. Welcome hampers come with authentic Welsh produce, such as Snowdonia cheese and local cider.

Outside, revel in the cabin’s construction from the old slate and railway sleepers of the Conwy Valley line. Couples can enjoy a sauna, yoga deck and hot tub or take a walk around the nearby fishing lake, all from the comfort of the self-catered cabin.

From £1,695 for two adults to enjoy a seven-night stay.

Barend Holiday Lodges, Dalbeattie, Scotland

Best for: quirky architecture.

The striking Scandinavian-style architecture of Barend Holiday Village’s impressive chalets is enhanced by great balcony views – a dream for long or short UK holidays. Nestled in Dalbeattie’s forests in the Dumfries and Galloway region, the quirky family-run holiday homes comfortably sleep two to eight people.

Free swimming in a heated pool, a sauna and access to golf services at Craigieknowes Golf Club’s nine-hole course create a great setting for getting active in the Great Outdoors. Barend offers a range of great walks for dog owners, – most chalets are pet-friendly – ramblers and families looking to take a light stroll down to the beach at Sandyhills Bay.

Six person lodges from £578 per three-night stay.

10 of the best last-minute spring ski holidays

T he ski clock may be ticking, but there’s still plenty of opportunity to get to the mountains before the resorts close. And, whether you’re yet to book or you’re planning yet another flit to the snow, the truth is that late season can be the best time to go .

Demand, along with prices, takes a dip in March , offering a magical moment of opportunity between the peak-priced half-term and the Easter school holidays. And although Easter falls early in 2024 (March 31), there’s enough time to take advantage of the quieter airports, shorter lift queues and mountain restaurants with tables to spare.

But even if you’re locked into school holidays, there are also reasons to be cheerful. As spring approaches, the days are getting longer, the lifts open later, and warmer temperatures make days on the mountains more enjoyable, particularly for young children and beginners who are more susceptible to cold.

And what about the snow? Well, things are looking rosy in that direction too. After some fallow weeks at the start of 2024 and into February, there has been recent heavy snowfall across the Alps , with Italian resorts reporting the heaviest falls of the year so far and even lower-lying resorts in France experiencing a substantial top-up.

Ian McIlrath of Ski Solutions, says: “The conditions in Austria are exceptional at this point in the season. In particular, the Arlberg region covering St Anton.” Further north, Scandinavian resorts continue to offer some of the best conditions in Europe. Andy Hemingway of Ski Safari comments: “ Norway is in the midst of an unbelievable winter, the powder days have been plentiful and, with fewer people on the slopes than other destinations, the snow stays untracked for longer.” And while winter got off to a slower start in some North American resorts, snow is now falling with moderate to heavy snow predicted over the next week.

So, when should you book and where should you go? The key strategy is to aim high so, if you do hit a warm spell, you still stand a good chance of decent skiing. Here are 10 last-minute deals to snow-sure resorts to help you make the most of the last few weeks of the ski season.

Tignes, France

With lifts operating to above 3,400m, Tignes has a season that runs into May, followed by summer snow sports on its Grande Motte glacier.

Book it: Peak Retreats (023 9283 9310; peakretreats.co.uk ) offers stays in Le Lodge des Neiges residence, near the Boisses telecabine in Tignes 1800, with indoor pool and hot tubs, from £549, self-catering, based on five sharing a two-bedroom apartment, including Le Shuttle crossing with a free upgrade to FlexiPlus. Departs March 16.

Mayrhofen, Austria

At a relatively low 630m, Mayrhofen can be bathed in warm spring sunshine but still with plenty of opportunity for late-season skiing and snowboarding as slopes rise to a snow-sure height of 2,500m.

Book it: Crystal Ski (020 3451 2821; crystalski.co.uk ) offers stays at Eberharter Apartments, near the resort centre and close to the ski bus stop, from £1,233, self-catering, with the option to upgrade to half board. Departs March 23.

Myrkdalen, Norway

One of the country’s snowiest resorts, open until April 30, Myrkdalen offers slopes that are best suited to beginners and improving intermediates, with off-piste skiing for more confident experts.

Book it: Ski Safari (01273 224060; skisafari.com ) offers the four-star Myrkdalen Hotel, a ski-in/ski-out hotel near the ski school and slopes, from £990, half board, based on two adults and two children under 12 years sharing a family room. Departs April 7.

Cervinia, Italy

Glacier skiing, a top station at 3,480m and a resort at 2,000m mean snow can cover the roofs of the upmarket hotels and apartments until early May – Cervinia has it all at the end of the season.

Book it: Elegant Resorts (01244 897581; elegantresorts.co.uk ) offers stays at the five-star Saint Hubertus Resort, with spa, pool and gourmet restaurant, from £2,530 based on a prestige room. Departs March 16.

Val Thorens, France

Not only the highest resort in the huge, 600km Trois Vallées area, but also in Europe, Val Thorens (at 2,300m) has lifts that continue to operate into early May.

Book it: Erna Low (020 3011 1222; ernalow.co.uk ) offers stays at four-star Le Hameau du Kashmir, a ski-in/ski-out residence with two restaurants and pool, from £564, self-catering, based on four sharing a two-bedroom apartment, including return Flexiplus LeShuttle crossing. Departs April 13.

Whistler, Canada

After a slow start, snow is falling on the linked mountains of Whistler and Blackcomb in western Canada’s Coast Mountain range, a vast ski area of more than 8,000 acres with slopes for all abilities.

Book it: Frontier Ski (020 8776 8709; frontier-ski.co.uk ) offers the Summit Boutique Hotel Whistler, in Whistler Village with pool and hot tubs, from £1,545, room only, based on deluxe studio with kitchenette. Departs April 8.

Avoriaz, France

Avoriaz is the highest of the dozen resorts that make up the Portes du Soleil area, and, at 1,800m and with slopes rising to 2,225m, its purpose-built, car-free centre is strong on ski-in/ski-out accommodation.

Book it: Sunweb (020 3170 8206; sunweb.co.uk ) offers stays at Résidence L’Hermine, 100m from the slopes, from £818, self-catering, based on two adults and two children sharing a one-bedroom apartment with kitchenette, including lift passes. Departs March 30.

St Anton, Austria

Situated in Austria’s Arlberg ski region, St Anton is one of Europe’s snowiest resorts, with fast links to neighbouring Lech and is particularly popular with experts.

Book it: Ski Solutions (020 7471 7700; skisolutions.com ) offers the four-star Hotel Banyan, with modern interiors, pool and sauna, from £1,895. Departs March 16.

Breckenridge, USA

With a top lift rising to a giddying 3,915m – the highest in North America – and a resort height of 3,000m, this Colorado resort, extending over five peaks, has an upper snow base of 140cm, which bodes well for late-season skiing.

Book it: Ski Independence (0131 243 8097; ski-i.com ) offers stays at the Residence Inn by Marriott, near the Quicksilver chairlift, from £2,348 per room only based on studio accommodation. Departs March 21.

Zermatt, Switzerland

It is possible to ski all year round on the highest slopes of Zermatt’s Matterhorn glacier at 3,883m, but the main season for this atmospheric resort usually runs into late April.

Book it: Inghams (01483 938047; inghams.co.uk ) offers Aparthotel Naco, from £1,419 based on three sharing a studio with kitchenette, balcony and use of an indoor pool, including train travel from St Pancras. Departs March 23.

Unless otherwise stated, prices are per person, based on two sharing, including breakfast, flights from London and transfers and are subject to availability

The Wildlife

Lions are impressive, large cats that live in groups, which are called prides. One of the most recognisable aspects of a lion is its mane, which is the longer hair male lions grow around their head, neck and chest. The colour of a mane can vary from lighter blondes, to much darker browns and blacks. Male lions roar to warn the pride about danger, scare off intruders and show their dominance – it can be heard up to five miles away!

Watch our bachelor group of lions as they play together and explore their new home. They were born here at the Park in the summer of 2019 and are growing into stunning young males!

The four brothers are called Havoc, Hodge, Harabi and Hercules with Havoc having the darkest fur of the group – see if you can spot him!
