Most definitely. In fact, as one of the safest and least polluted countries in the world, Iceland is one of the most desirable destinations for a family trip.

Is it safe to go on tours in Iceland with small children?

Absolutely! Every tour offered by Arctic Adventures has a minimum age indication. If the tour description states that no minimum age applies, it is perfectly safe to take children of any age on it.

What is the minimum age for family tours?

It all depends on the tour you choose. Most family tours such as sightseeing or Langjökull Glacier Ice Cave tour have no age limit. However, some tours that require quite a bit of hiking or have more demanding activities will have a certain minimum age requirement. This information is presented in the description of every tour.

Can I take toddlers for free on any tour?

Unfortunately not. Tours such as Whale & Puffin Tour or Whale Watching Tour from Reykjavik invite adventurers up to 6 years to join for free (with adult supervision of course). Most other tours, however, cannot offer that due to limited space.

What is a good time of the year to visit Iceland with family?

Iceland is the land of fire and ice. It’s a jaw-droppingly beautiful destination filled with towering waterfalls , a strong belief in fairytale creatures, wide-open landscapes to explore, and skies that dance with colorful lights. It’s a destination that appeals to adults and children alike.

Visiting Iceland with kids means exploring one of the safest countries in the world. And there are few other places where you can hike a glacier, bask in the spray of waterfalls, ride Icelandic horses down the coast, or take a super-jeep tour to the rim of an active volcano. It’s practically impossible for kids in Iceland not to find something that blows their little minds.

Iceland is also a place where the warmth of the locals is almost as powerful as the volcanoes that fuel the geothermal baths that dot the country. The Icelandic people are generally quiet and reserved, but many have a deep love for children. And exploring the picturesque fishing towns in Iceland with your kids will often open up a chance to connect that many adult travelers might miss. No matter what your Iceland itinerary looks like, you’re going to be planning a trip back very soon after you get home.

You’ll also find that many restaurants, cottages, and hotels cater to families. Many places have entertainment areas specifically for children. Hotels and motels often have cots and cribs, high chairs, and play areas. While you’re traveling Iceland with kids, you’ll also learn about Iceland’s tremendous Viking heritage. From the explorers to the Viking legends, the myth and history in Icelandic tales offer stories for kids to get lost in. They are filled with adventure, passion, and mythical creatures.

Combine these things with the wide-open landscapes, great roads, amazing restaurants, and access to incredible wildlife experiences such as whales, puffins, and reindeer, and family travel to Iceland becomes positively brilliant.

Is It Easy To Travel Iceland With Kids?

Iceland has an absolutely rock-solid tourism industry. This north-Atlantic country sees a massive influx of visitors who are focused on Iceland summer vacations and winter northern lights tours.

Because family travel in Iceland is so safe, one of the best ways to explore the country is via a self-drive tour. Many families opt to tour the Ring Road or self-drive popular attractions such as the famous Golden Circle .

Rental companies in Iceland cater well to families. Whether you’re looking to book directly with a car rental company in Iceland such as Hertz or Budget, or, as I like to do, go through an aggregator such as Auto Europe , you’ll find rental companies that are able to source important things such as car seats, booster seats, and more.

The roads in Iceland are fantastic. And, unless you are looking to explore the Icelandic Highlands that are found on the rough F-Roads (which certain rentals will not be allowed to travel on), you’ll be just fine with a two-wheel drive vehicle. But, if you want to truly get off-the-beaten-path, you’ll want something with 4-wheel-drive.

Grocery stores in Iceland are well stocked with supplies such as formula, milk, diapers, pureed, food and more. You’ll find two types of milk on the shelves. One is shelf-safe and can be stored, refrigerated for a few days. Ask the helpful staff which is best for your travel itinerary.

Purchase your supplies from larger grocery stores such as Bonus, Kronan, and Netto, and in Reykjavik, you’ll find a Costco. You’ll find prices at these locations to be significantly cheaper than smaller stores and even the well-stocked gas stations.

How to Get to Iceland With Kids

Iceland is very conveniently located right between Europe and North America. In fact, it is literally the dividing point between the two countries. You can actually swim, snorkel or even SCUBA dive between the two tectonic plates in an area of Thingvellir National Park called the Silfra Fissure .

Because of this and a large tourism push in the country, flying into Iceland is relatively inexpensive from countries such as Canada, the United States, and most of Europe.

Our flight from Toronto to Keflavik on Iceland Air only took about five hours and was one of the easiest International family travel trips that we’ve taken. Flights from within Europe are even less expensive than those coming from North America with rates that can fall below $100 USD each way.

What To Do In Iceland With Kids

Iceland tourism has exploded in recent years. And more and more families are bringing their kids to Iceland. Each story that gets told just breeds more and more passion for this amazing country. And as more and more people decide to visit Iceland with toddlers, young kids, and teenagers, new and exciting opportunities are popping up for family travel within the country.

Learn About Viking History in Iceland

One of the most fascinating parts about visiting Iceland with kids is learning about the rich Viking history of the country. These epic explorers moved across the Ocean from Norway and eventually discovered the New World long before the rest of Europe jumped on the bandwagon. And it is their fascinating story that makes Iceland what it is today.

• The Sun Voyager sculpture in Reykjavik is the perfect place to start your journey through Iceland with kids. This is one of the most iconic pieces of artwork in the country. But it’s also the perfect launching point for piquing kids’ interest in Viking culture! Honestly, some of the most fun photos you can take on a family trip to Iceland are down by the Reykjavik marina.
• Meet a Giant Viking on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula .  When I was researching what to do in Iceland for families, I didn’t expect that this site near the bird cliffs of the Snaefellsnes peninsula , would become one of my favorites. Here sits a massive rock depiction of Bardur Snaefellsnes, a descendant of trolls who still exerts their magical influence on the region. The Bardur of Snaefellsenes is a great way to introduce your kids to the Icelandic sagas and the history of the country.
• Visit The Incredible Viking Museums. There are many great kid-friendly museums in Iceland. The Saga Museum is located within Reykjavik and is very popular. Just outside of town (about 40 mins) is Viking World , which has some amazing displays that will capture children’s imagination. But if you really want to delve into the Viking Saga’s and history, we highly recommend The Settlement Centre in West Iceland. It’s worth the journey if you’re traveling the Ring Road .

Take In The Most Beautiful Waterfalls in Iceland

Iceland is all about waterfalls! There are more of them than you can count. In fact, it seems that everywhere you travel in Iceland, there is water cascading down in the most beautiful way.

Not all of the waterfalls in Iceland are kid-friendly, but many of them are. These are some of our favorite waterfalls in Iceland for children. If you’re a photographer, make sure to bring along a tripod to catch those beautiful long-exposures of the waterfalls.

• The Majestic Gullfoss on Iceland’s Golden Circle is one of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland. This iconic destination is a great introduction to the waterfalls of Iceland for kids.
• Svartifoss Waterfall in Vatnajokull National Park is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland. It’s located at the mid-way point of an easy 1.5 km (1 mile) hike. The hike is an easy one through the low lying forest. And the stream at the bottom of Svartifoss is perfect for splashing.
• Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall in West Iceland is in one of the most scenic areas of the country. The waterfall itself is pretty basic by Icelandic standards, but the relaxing walk along the river and the scenery around it are breathtaking! Children of all ages will love running through the fields of summer flowers with Kirkjufell Mountain in the background.

Swim in the Geothermal Pools

Make sure to bring your swimsuits with you. Iceland has countless glaciers that pour melt-water down through volcanic soil and rock. The geothermal landscape makes for a natural filtration and heating system. Because of all of this geothermal activity there are an endless number of geothermal pools waiting to explore.

• Float In Elegance in the Blue Lagoon between Reykjavik and Keflavik. Yes, the Blue Lagoon is the most famous geothermal pool in Iceland. That fame is often debated, but there’s no denying that it’s a beautiful way to begin or end a family vacation to Iceland. Unfortunately, children under 2 are no longer allowed at the Blue Lagoon.
• Enjoy family fun at the Laugardalslaug pool in Reykavik. This place combines the pools with a sports hall, botanical garden, a zoo, a sculpture museum, a large gym (World Class), a spa, and a skating rink! If you are traveling in Iceland with toddlers, it doesn’t get much better than this.
• Swim with a view at the Myvatn Nature Bath. The Myvatn Nature Baths are one of our favorite spots to bring kids in Iceland. The Myvatn Nature Baths are open to all ages and have some of the most beautiful views of all the geothermal pools.

Go Whale Watching

There are few things cooler for both kids and adults than watching a creature the size of a bus rocket out of the water and come crashing down just a few feet away from your boat.

And there are few places in the world where you can experience whale watching as you can in Iceland. These are the ones that we recommend:

• Whale Watching in Reykjavik is an excellent option for doing a 3 or 4-day tour of Iceland with kids. The convenience of being in the capital city with easy access to the marina is helpful to those who aren’t doing a full tour of the country. Most whale watching tours in Iceland leave from the Old Harbour and last about 3 hours. You can find some family-friendly Reykjavik whale watching tours here .
• Whale Watching in the Calm Waters of Akureyri is popular for families due to the calm water of Iceland’s longest fjord. Akureyri is one of Iceland’s northernmost cities, and it is the second-largest city in the country. Whale watching tours in Akureyri take off from the floating pier near the Hof Cultural and Concert hall. Here is a great Akureyri whale watching tour to check out .
• Whale Watching from a Schooner in Husavik with North Sailing was one of our favorite experiences in Iceland. There was something magical about combining the majesty of tall ships with the elegance of whales in the Northern Sea. As an added bonus, Husavik is one of the best places to see the world’s largest mammal, the Blue Whale, during the summer months. This has become one of our favorite family-friendly wildlife experiences in the world . Husavik is also home to the Iceland whale museum which has a lot to offer for those experiencing Iceland for kids, or adults traveling the country. Explore some of Iceland’s Other Wildlife

Kids aren’t the only wild animals that love to explore Iceland, there are lots of amazing creatures that call Iceland their home. This country’s unique position in the ocean makes it a haven for migratory birds such as the North Atlantic puffin.

But it’s not just our feathered friends that can be found around Iceland. There are a few animals that we love to visit when we are in this beautiful country. Here are some of our top wildlife experiences for families in Iceland. You can check out our guide to finding puffins in Iceland here.

• Run along with herds of Reindeer in East Iceland. Reindeer are the largest animal that lives in Iceland (except for the occasional Polar Bear that ends up here by accident). Reindeer are most easily seen in the winter months when they head to the lowlands to feed. During the summer, you are more likely to see them in the highlands away from the crowds.
• Watch colorful puffins dance in the air and in the water. Ferry to the Westfjords where during the summer months Iceland is home to some of the largest concentrations of puffins in the world. The best place to see them are on the ferry to the Snaefellsness Peninsula (make sure to book the slow ferry, the fast one doesn’t stop at the colony). If you want to see them up-close, head to Latrabjarg in the Westfjords to watch them on the epic Latrabjarg bird cliffs .
• Go horseback riding on elegant Icelandic horses. OK, you got me, while not technically “wildlife”, Icelandic horses are still one of the most treasured animals in the country. They are known for their small size, gorgeous coats, and fortitude that allowed them to survive the harsh Icelandic winters. Views. Iceland’s got them. In fact, when you’re hiking in Iceland with children, it seems like Iceland has ALL the views. In all of the countries that our family has traveled to , I can’t think of one country that has matched Iceland for sheer beauty. Many have come close. But Iceland remains the champion.

• Visit the Giant at the Arnarpstapi Bird Cliffs. Yes, this is the same trip we mentioned earlier when talking about Viking history in Iceland. Not only can you visit the Bardur of Snaefellsnes here, but you can hike between the towns of Arnarpstapi and Hellnar for some stunning views. The Arnarpstapi cliffs are home to thousands of nesting birds that make their homes on the coastal cliffs and sea caves. As an added bonus, stop in at the Fjoruhusid cafe in Hellnar for a treat before making your way back to Arnapstapi.
• Explore the stunning landscape around Lake Myvatn. The hiking trails surrounding Lake Myvatn are gorgeous. The region is lush and green during the summer months. The well-maintained paths make the hike very family-friendly. Along with volcanic hills and craters, you might also see grazing Icelandic horses along the water’s edge.
• Take in one of the most beautiful canyons in the world at Fjadrargljufur. This narrow canyon stretches for 2 km between steep 100 m cliffs. The canyon floor can be trekked but requires some wading through shallow water and along some small waterfalls. There is also a path along the canyon rim for those who want to keep their feet dry. We opted to do a little of each, and the views from both are simply amazing.

Appease Your Adventurous Side with Family-Friendly Icelandic Adventure Activities

With endless nature and epic views surrounding you, it’s easy to get caught up in the madness and want to try something exciting! Luckily, many of these adventurous activities can be done with children. Well, at least children of a certain age. These are some of the most exciting activities in Iceland for kids.

• Snowmobile Across Langjokull Glacier. There are few things as freeing and fun as snowmobiling across a glacier in Iceland. Although you need to be 18 to be a driver and at least 6-years old to be a passenger (When we first went, the age restrictions were a little different), snowmobiling in Iceland offers a really great way to explore on top of the amazing glaciers. • Take a Zodiac or Amphibious Vehicle tour of the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. Jokulsarlon lagoon is one of the most surreal places in Iceland. Children in Iceland will love watching the icebergs cut off the Jökulsárlón glacier into the spectacular lagoon while playful seals swim amongst the clear blue icebergs that float around you. As a bonus, make sure to get a taste of the delicious glacier ice scooped straight out of the lagoon! You can find some Jukulsarlon lagoon tours here .
• Take an off-road journey in the Icelandic Interior. Off-roading and Super Jeeps are a big deal in Iceland, and these rugged adventures are something that the whole family can enjoy. And with Icelandic safety in force, you know it will kid-safe and as fun as when we went on a dune buggy in Peru . Off-roading in Iceland with kids lets you get to areas you might not think of exploring with kids. You can even combine a super jeep with a trip to beautiful Landmanalaugher with this tour .
• Snorkel or Dive Between Continental Plates. For those a little older, a visit to Thingvellir National Park affords those with the fortitude the chance to snorkel or swim in one of the most unique locations in the world. The Silfra Fissure is the location where the continental plates are drifting apart creating a huge crack through the center of Iceland. Diving and snorkeling the Silfra Fissure is amazing, and you can find some family-friendly tours here .

Taste Some Local Icelandic Food

Iceland is slowly becoming known for its culinary expertise as much as it is known for the country’s natural beauty. Icelandic cooking has adapted to the limited resources available on the island and the local chefs have learned to create some truly amazing dishes.

Sure, sometimes it can be tough to get kids to try new foods, but travel is all about trying something new! Here are some of the dishes that our kids loved:

• Get your child’s Icelandic tasting started easily with Pylsur. Pylsur?! Your kids might say, ew, gross! But this dish has become one of the most beloved meals in Iceland. What is Pylsur? It’s actually the Icelandic name for Hot Dogs! There are several great hot dog stands in Iceland, and they are ALWAYS busy. Many of these places are cash-only, so make sure you have more than credit cards
• Start your day right with a bowl of Icelandic Skyr. Almost all of the locals in Iceland eat Skyr. This creamy combination that sits somewhere between yogurt and cottage cheese is a breakfast staple. Not only is it a healthy treat, but it can be mixed with fruit and jam into a delicious treat. This delicious yogurt has exploded across North America now and you can even order it online .
• Hold your nose and gulp down some …fermented shark? Ok, I’ll be honest with you, this is something we didn’t try ourselves. But it IS a thing in Iceland. Most locals find this vile-smelling dish abhorrent, but it is steeped in tradition here as well, so there is a market for it.

Experience Some of Iceland’s Quirkiest Attractions

Icelandic People can come across as cold. That is until you get to know them. In actual fact, Icelanders love to have fun, and there is unique humor in a lot of their attractions. These are some of our favorite wild and wacky attractions that are great for family travel to Iceland.

• Wander Through Petra’s Stone Collection in Stodvarfjordur . Petra’s Stone Collection is a wild collection of rocks, minerals, and memorabilia collected by Petra María that has been referred to as a cornerstone of the nation. This collection is quirky, featuring an odd assortment of stones from throughout the country and the world. Kids will love exploring the fairy gardens, painted rocks, and beautiful gardens of Petra’s backyard while adults can visit the museum to learn about Iceland’s ‘Grand Old Lady’.
• Search for Fairies in Songhellir, the ‘Singing Cave’. Iceland is known for its rich mystical history. Many Icelandic people believe in fairies, trolls and other incredible creatures, and Icelanders are known to have small houses in their garden for elves and the like to take shelter in. Songhellir is a cave located just off the Ring Road in an area famous for mythical sightings. The cave, known as the ‘singing cave’ due to wind pushing through the lava tubes is easy to climb into and the walls feature graffiti from explorers dating back hundreds of years.
• Explore some of Iceland’s beautiful beaches. No vacation with children is complete without a visit to the beach! And the greatest thing about the beach in Iceland is that you don’t need to worry about crowds. Just drive right on out, park in the sand, and get ready to make sandcastles. Just make sure to bring a thermos of hot chocolate, the water can get a bit chilly!

Take An Iceland Road Trip

It’s easy to spend 3 or 4 days in Reykjavik and the things to do near Reykjavik . There is a lot that you can see with just a few days in Iceland. But if you really want to delve into how incredibly amazing this country is , your best bet is to rent a car and explore.

Icelandic roads are super well-maintained and traffic laws are widely supported (and enforced, so drive safe!). Taking a road trip in Iceland with kids makes for an unforgettable experience. And it’s also the best way to explore the parts of Iceland that are often overlooked by visitors . Here are some of our top things you can see on a road trip in Iceland that you probably won’t see on a day trip from Reykjavik. You can check out AutoEurope for great car rental prices here.

• Drive through streams and rivers in the Icelandic Highlands. The Icelandic Highlands are a vast departure from the coastal areas of Iceland. For countless miles in each direction, the land is barren, rocky, and wild. Kids will love the thrill of driving through small streams and rivers in your 4×4 (because if you don’t have a 4×4, don’t go to the Highlands!). You’ll see towering mountains and glaciers such as the Askja Caldera . Just make sure you stock up on gas and supplies before you go. There are no service stations here.
• Check out some of Iceland’s less famous, but no less spectacular, waterfalls. As I mentioned earlier, Iceland is full of waterfalls. And many of them can’t be seen on an organized tour. They are either too off-the-beaten-path or just not included in organized Iceland tours. Some of the ones not to miss are Godafoss, Iceland’s most powerful waterfall, and the graceful Detifoss and Selfoss. These last two can be reached via a short hike .
• Watch Where the World Has Ripped Apart in Lakagigar. Our visit to Crater Row in Lakagigar was one of our most epic road trips in Iceland. It’s a long drive to get there, but WOW! When you arrive it will blow your mind. There are a series of beautiful volcanic caves that are cool to explore (young children might need a hand to hold for this one). But the best part is a hike up a small mountain (kids of all ages can do it with a little help). Here you can see where the earth was opened up like a zipper by a series of volcanic eruptions that devastated Iceland in the early 20th century.

The Alda Hotel Reykjavik is one of the most popular hotels for families in Iceland. They have both a family room with a pullout couch and a suite with two bedrooms.The Canopy Hotel by Hilton also has suites and rooms with pullout couches. Would you recommend staying in Reykjavík and then doing day trips to see the rest of Iceland or split up the trip staying in different towns/cities? We are planning for this summer while I’m on maternity leave with our 3 month old and 6 year old kids.

I would only recommend doing daytrips from Reykjavik if you are focusing solely on southern Iceland. The distances are too great if you're looking at the Westfjords, Eastfjords, or northern regions. If you are planning an extended stay, moving around the country would be the ideal approach.

I'll be going with my two year old in about 2 weeks. What kind of clothes did your little one use?

The weather can be all over the map in Iceland so it's always best to be prepared. It's not a country that you want to pack light for if you are going to be doing off-the-beaten-path kind of exploring. But one of the best things that we brought were Merino wool base layers for all of us. Having something light and warm meant that we could layer off our clothes pretty easily and stay comfortable in almost all conditions. Day 1 Reykjavík

Arrive in time to meet your fellow travelers for a welcome gathering this evening. Your arrival transfer is included.

Day 2 Reykjavík

Start the morning at the Perlan museum, which showcases Iceland’s geological forces through exhibits on volcanic eruptions, explosive geysers, and more. After a classic Icelandic hot dog lunch, hop aboard a ship for a whale-watching expedition on Faxaflói Bay. Search for minke whales, humpback whales, dolphins, and porpoises diving through the waves, and learn about the incredible diversity of sea life in Iceland’s waters. The rest of the day is free for relaxing at your hotel or exploring Reykjavík.

Day 3 hveragerði.

Set off on a hike through an area dotted with hot springs, stopping to soak your feet in steaming pools along the way. Travel to a vast lava field and enter one of the longest lava tunnels in Iceland, where we’ll explore the amazing inner workings of a volcanic eruption. Then head to a traditional Icelandic horse farm to meet the friendly equine residents and learn about this special breed. Icelandic horses are small, hardy, and have a unique ambling gait called the tölt. Get to know the horses amid the beautiful backdrop of surrounding hills before gathering for a homemade lunch at the farm. This afternoon, continue to our hotel in Hveragerði, a town built around its own bubbling hot spring.

Exclusive Inclusions:

Day 4 golden circle.

Discover the celebrated Golden Circle, a circuit that will take us to some of Iceland’s most amazing natural treasures. Hear the roar of the mighty Gullfoss waterfall and visit the Geysir hot spring, the namesake of all the world’s geysers. Continue to Thingvellir National Park, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates collide. Then visit a geothermal bakery to watch bakers digging pots of fresh bread out of hot black sand. Taste a slice still warm from the ground, and get the recipe for a loaf of rye. In the late afternoon, opt to stop by the Laugarvatn Fontana Spa for a soothing soak in geothermal waters.

Day 5 South Coast

Today, explore Iceland’s amazing history, from the Viking era to the industrial revolution. Visit a traditional turf-walled dwelling, and step inside a 20th-century schoolhouse while learning about Iceland’s architectural heritage, folk crafts, and modern technology. Then take a short walk to the Skógafoss waterfall, one of the biggest falls in Iceland at more than 80 feet across. Enjoy lunch at the Skogafoss Bistro. This afternoon ramble on one of Iceland’s legendary black-sand beaches.

Day 6 Westman Islands/Vík

Leave the mainland behind and voyage to the Westman Islands, a volcanic archipelago off Iceland’s southern coast. Go ashore on Heimaey, the only inhabited isle in the archipelago, and wander among the white wooden buildings of the single tiny town. Learn about the island’s recent volcanic history, view parts of the town buried by lava flows, and hike up the slopes of the Eldfell crater, where the ground is still warm from geothermal activity! Search for adorable puffins and other seabirds nesting on the island’s steep cliffs, then sail back to Vík—the southernmost village in Iceland, known for its black-sand beach and strange rock formations.

Day 7 Reykjavík

Return to Reykjavík this morning, stopping along the way to visit Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland’s most spectacular waterfalls. Step behind the curtain of the falls into a hidden cave filled with mist, and enjoy one of the best photographic opportunities in Iceland. Continue to the famed Blue Lagoon to soak in the hot spring’s iridescent blue waters. Continue to Reykjavík and enjoy a farewell dinner.

Day 8 Reykjavík

Welcome to Iceland

Welcome to your epic holiday in Iceland!

Once you arrive at Keflavik International Airport and clear customs, your vehicle is ready for pick up at the Enterprise Car rental service desk. The car rental shuttle bus is just outside the arrival hall. They will take you to the service desk on the other premises. Shuttle departures every 10-15 minutes.

Explore Reykjavík

The first night will be spent in the heart of Reykjavik, the world's northernmost capital. Get settled into your hotel and start exploring. Reykjavik's city center offers many great sights, and the city is unique.

You will not find the towering skyscrapers of America or the age-old narrow streets, seemingly unchanged since Roman times, as in many European capitals. Reykjavik is somewhere in between and yet miles away. With its small, colorful, and quirky houses, and exciting street art, it’s modern, charming, and somehow old all the same time. So, don’t forget to bring your camera along, and get ready for photo ops at every turn.

The Golden Circle

Today you will head to the Golden Circle, a popular route for viewing some of the best-known natural sites in south Iceland.

Thingvellir National Park

Besides being a natural wonder, it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the world’s longest continuously run parliament was founded and still running some good 1.000 years later, but now in Reykjavik. The parliament first met here in 930 AD, half a century after the country was first settled. Meetings occurred during the warmer summer months, with Icelandic people coming from around the country. Thingvellir was specifically chosen as the location for the Althing (parliament) because it was fairly convenient to access different parts of Iceland. Parliament continued to sit at Thingvellir up to the late 1790s.

Thingvellir isn’t just a special historical and cultural place; it also has many fascinating geological aspects and nature. The island of Iceland sits on the boundaries of two continental plates: the North American Plate and the Eurasian Plate. As the two plates gradually move away from each other, a gaping rift is created on the Earth’s surface. Thingvellir is the rift valley, and visitors can see the huge cracks and walk in the unusual fissures.

Don’t miss visiting Öxararfoss waterfall in the national park; it is easily found along the marked trail. The pretty cascade is around a 10-minute walk from the car park.

You may recognize some spots as you explore, especially if you’re a Game of Thrones fan. Several scenes were filmed around the national park. See the Bloody Gate from Season 4, marking the path to the Eyrie.

Gullfoss Waterfall

Your next stop is at Gullfoss Waterfall (golden falls), the beautiful falls after which the Golden Circle is named. One of the most spectacular cascades in the country. The falls are split into two levels. The first tier is around 11 meters (36 ft) high, while the second level is almost twice as high, at around 21 meters (68 ft). The two stages are broken by wide steps that ultimately cross the river’s width.

The falls are genuinely amazing when viewed from any vantage point. You can see the cascades from two main areas, with higher and lower observation points. Follow the steps that link the two main areas for different views. With more time to enjoy the mighty falls, you can also follow the river at the top of the waterfall for yet another perspective.

Gullfoss is spectacular at all times of the year. The falls are surrounded by verdant foliage in the summer, and you may catch rainbows sparkling in the spray. Over the winter, snow-covered landscapes engulf the falls for as far as the eye can see.

Geysir Geothermal Area

The next stop is the epic Geysir Geothermal Area. The word "Geysir" is an Icelandic verb; it means "to gush", and it’s where the English word geyser originates from. Indeed, the first written record of a geyser is the one at Icelandic Geysir.

It’s no surprise, therefore, that you’ll find plenty of geothermal magic at Geysir Geothermal Area. There are hot springs, bubbling pools of heated water, warm mud pots, fissures that belch steam and gases (fumaroles), and of course, geysers. You’ll find two of the most famous geysers in Iceland here, the namesake Geysir and the frequently erupting Strokkur.

Thought to have been erupting for some 10,000 years, Geysir is fairly inactive these days. If you are lucky enough to catch the famous geyser in action, you’re in for a real treat—boiling water shoots more than 120 meters into the air, surrounded by a cloud of steam.

Sitting close to Geysir is Strokkur, the area’s main star for most visitors today. Eruptions occur every five to ten minutes, making reliable and frequent jets a marvelous sight. Water and steam typically reach 15 and 20 meters (49-65 ft) high, though they can sometimes be as high as 40 meters (131 ft).

Taste meals made of locally grown tomato in Friðheimar Restaurant & Tomato Farm

For lunch, we recommend visiting the unique Friðheimar Tomato Farm. A unique food experience in a restaurant in the middle of a greenhouse, with tomatoes growing all around you! Three varieties of tomatoes are cultivated in the greenhouses, and food is served among the tomato plants.  Tomato soup, freshly baked bread, and other goodies, are in this charming environment among the tomato plants.

Call them in advance to book a table and a guided tour (optional). Visitors gain an insight into the processes of greenhouse horticulture with a short and informative talk on the subject – and in fact, it is quite remarkable that it should be possible to grow vegetables in this cold climate by creating warm Mediterranean conditions, all year round, through the long dark winter. The Atrium also includes an exhibition about the use of geothermal heating in Icelandic horticulture. And visitors can take away delicious food souvenirs such as Tomato Jam, Cucumber Salsa, and Tomato Drink.

Bathe in the Secret Lagoon

You'll end this memorable day with a relaxing warm bath at the Secret Lagoon, a hot spring pool in the small village of Fludir.  It is the oldest man-made swimming pool in Iceland, built in 1891, and Icelanders call it simply 'the old pool' or 'Gamla laugin'.

What makes this place special are the natural resources of warm water from three hot springs that provide 100% of the water supply in the lagoon. The pool water flows continuously, and it takes only 24 hours for its complete replacement. Therefore the pool doesn't require any additional filtration or purification. It is naturally warm, clean, and rich in sulfur; it stays at 38-40 Celsius (100-104°F) all year round. 

The area around the hot spring consists of mossy lava fields and geothermal hot spots, including a small geyser that erupts every 5 minutes or so, which can be seen from the pool. A path by the pool allows you to explore this area with ease. The steam that rises from the surrounding terrain gives the place its distinct and magical atmosphere.

The Secret Lagoon is only 2 – 3 feet deep (0.6 – 0.9 meters), making it more of a wading pool. This shallow depth makes it an excellent choice for families or poor swimmers, as one can easily stand up should circumstances become uncomfortable.

After the relaxing bath, you'll head to your hotel in the Geysir area.

Your next day begins with a rich and delicious breakfast at your hotel.

Next is a memorable snowmobile adventure on Langjökull, Iceland's second-largest glacier.  Your tour starts at the Gullfoss Café car parking, located by the Gullfoss waterfall, where you will be picked up by one of our driver guides in a SuperJeep and head into the wild. Riding in our modified SuperJeep with giant tires across a glacier is a fun and exciting experience already!

Once you reach our base camp, we will register you for your snowmobile tour, and your guides will provide you with all the equipment you need for an exciting 1-hour snowmobile ride.

Most of our guests are first-time snowmobiles, so you will receive a comprehensive safety briefing and instruction on how to drive your snowmobile safely and confidently. Snowmobiles are easy to drive – you will learn all you need to know in a few minutes. The kids are, of course, not allowed to drive, but they can sit behind an adult as passengers. The minimum age limit for this tour is six years.

After practice driving at our base area, your guide will lead you up a snowmobile trail through the ice cap for a fantastic adventure. Midway through the ride, we will stop to take in the view. If you are lucky enough to have clear weather, you will have a spectacular view of the glacier and the surrounding mountains.

After taking photos and enjoying the view, you’ll hop back onto your snowmobile and shoot back down the glacier to the base camp. We will drop you off at the same location or Gullfoss café.

Taste delicious home-made food at Efsti Dalur II; farm-to-table restaurant

Your recommended restaurent for today is Efstidalur, where you will get a unique and different experience. Right in the heart of the Golden Circle, you get a glance at farm life in Iceland. This family farm has opened up for tourists and offers a variety of products straight from the farm, such as the famous ice cream, skyr, and feta cheese. The restaurant also offers beef from the farm and other local food.

Four siblings and their families run Efstidalur II. They recently took over the business from their parents, who started and developed the concept with them today. The siblings are the 7th generation living on the property, but their family has been living on Efstidalur II since around 1750. They are dairy farmers first and foremost, but since 2002 the business has developed with increased tourism in the area. In 2013 they opened the restaurant and café and began to make their own products from their milk that they offer our guests to taste and enjoy.

Kayaking adventure

The next day, you'll head back towards Reykjavík but will make some stops for some adventures. 

First, you'll stop at Stokkseyri, pick up kayaks, and explore the swamp's calm, shallow waters and labyrinth-like ways. The tour is unguided, but the area is absolutely safe and great for beginners and children aged six years and up. There's no previous kayaking experience needed at all.

Hveragerði, the flower town

Next, you'll pay a visit to the unique little town of Hveragerði. The town is positioned in an active volcanic zone that traverses Iceland from southwest to northeast. Small earthquakes are frequent here, thanks to the tectonic movements that rumble below. The biggest recent earthquake occurred on May 29th, 2008, which was 6.3 on the Richter scale.

For the same reason, there is a strong geothermal activity in the ground under and around Hveragerði, and the town's name already implies its geothermal history (hver = hot spring, gerði = town). Locals have harnessed the earth's hot-water power to grow fruits, flowers, and vegetables in greenhouses all year round.  The town is famous for its many greenhouses that use the geothermal heat from the ground to grow vegetables and flowers all year; this is why locals often refer to it as the flower town.

Inside the town is a geothermal park we recommend you visit. Several highly active hot springs spew colorful mud and hot geothermal water into the air creating quite a spectacle. As a result, steam pillars rise up from the ground year-round. This little park even has two regularly erupting geysers, called Eilífur and Ruslahver.

A natural clay foot bath can be enjoyed in the park, and afterward, you can soak your feet in one of the hot springs. In one of the hot spring holes, the locals bake the famous black rye bread using the geothermal ground as an oven. Visitors can also boil an egg in the geothermal water and eat it with warm hot spring bread. Don't forget to take a look inside the greenhouse!

Lava tunnel exploration

As you resume your travel toward Reykjavík, there will be one more stop: the destination of your next adventure that takes you down under the ground. The Lava Tunnel, or as it's known to Icelanders: Raufarholshellir, is a cave formed during a volcanic eruption about 5.200 years ago. You'll take a tour to explore this extraordinary natural phenomenon under the guidance of an experienced caving guide. 

Raufarhólshellir is one of Iceland's longest lava tubes.  A journey into it is a unique experience and a great opportunity to witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption as you walk in the path of lava that flowed along here thousands of years ago. Every winter, spectacular ice sculptures are formed inside the cave entrance, making the experience of visiting the lava tunnel more breathtaking.

The total length of the tunnel is an impressive 1360 m (4500 ft), the main tunnel being 900 m (3000 ft) long. The tunnel is up to 30 m wide with headroom up to 10 m high, making it one of the most expansive lava tunnels in Iceland. The ceiling has caved in near the tunnel entrance, creating three beautiful columns of light inside the tunnel. At the end of Raufarhólshellir, the tunnel branches into three smaller tunnels where magnificent lava falls and formations are visible.

This trip through Raufarhólshellir is a unique opportunity to get a close look at the impressive forces of nature that emerge from the center of the earth and a guided tour of the wondrous world that can be found just under the surface.

You'll arrive at your hotel in Reykjavík, where you'll spend the next two nights. Have some good rest after the adventurous day! 

Whale Watching Tour in Reykjavik and a visit to the Blue Lagoon

After a good breakfast at your hotel, you'll head to downtown Reykjavík, to the Old harbor. The original purpose of this harbor was for fisheries and trade, but today you'll find the puffin and whale watching boats here. 

You'll join a classic whale-watching tour on one of the largest whale-watching boats in Iceland. One of the best advantages of a big boat is the large space which provides plenty of exciting corners to explore with the kids while waiting for the gentle giants to appear. The other great advantage is stability: you are less exposed to the waves on a big boat than on a smaller one, reducing the chance of seasickness by a ton. This big and sturdy whale-watching boat provides extra comfort, nice interior and seating areas, large outside viewing decks, a safe, family-friendly environment, and a café & souvenir shop.

On this tour, you'll be able to experience some of Iceland’s rich and thriving bird life, as well as visit our large variety of sea life, including minke whales, humpback whales, harbor porpoises, and white-beaked dolphins, among other whale species. The expert guides and friendly crew will welcome you aboard, share interesting information about different kinds of whales and seabirds you may expect on your tour, and teach you how to spot whales out in the bay. Blue Lagoon Visit

The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa located in an 800-year-old lava field in the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark. The lagoon is filled with mineral-rich, milky-blue water and has a large bathing area with warm water that stays at around 37–39°C (98–102°F) all year.

The Blue Lagoon is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Iceland – almost everybody who visits the country goes there. It is known worldwide for its beauty, stunning location in the vast, black, and mossy lava field, and the healing powers of its mineral-rich water.

Geologically, the Blue Lagoon is unique. Reykjanes Peninsula, where the Blue Lagoon is located, sits on top of an active volcanic system, home to many volcanoes, calderas, and craters. Icelanders built a geothermal power plant to harness the incredible power hidden under the ground and create renewable energy. This power plant has provided the surrounding villages with electricity, warm water, and heat.

During the drilling process, strangely colored water began to appear. It was so rich in minerals that it coated the power plant’s engines and kept them from running. The workers wanted to get rid of this runoff water, so they pumped it out, disposing of it in the lava field. As this was naturally occurring water, which came from under the ground, it offered no threat to the environment.

For many years, people believed that this water was poisonous. One day, a worker started bathing in this strange water and realized it wasn’t poisonous. He suffered from a rare skin condition called psoriasis, and after a while, he noticed that his symptoms started to improve. He was the first person to call the geothermal pool the Blue Lagoon. The locals began to venture to this newly discovered bathing location.

In the 1980s, the source of this water and its minerals was finally identified. Studies found that the water was safe and could be used for medicinal and recreational purposes. After hearing this news, including the possible health benefits of bathing in this special water, the locals visited the lagoon more frequently.

In 1992, the Blue Lagoon company was founded, and luxurious bathing and changing facilities were built. Since then, it’s only continued to increase in size and popularity.

The water at the Blue Lagoon is 55% seawater and 35% freshwater, which originates about 2000 m (6500 ft.) below the surface. Here, the seawater and freshwater combine under extreme heat and pressure, forming a mixture called geothermal seawater. After traveling to the surface through different layers, the water emerges enriched with all bioactive elements that have proven healing and nourishing abilities.

The Blue Lagoon facilities include a souvenir shop, a buffet, an up-scale restaurant, changing areas, massage rooms, a relaxation area, an in-water buffet, and bathing areas with steam baths.

Bathing in the Blue Lagoon is an epic experience and the perfect closure to an adventure-filled family holiday.

Our time in Iceland was spectacular and we owe it to the itinerary planned by Deluxe Iceland. Ours was a 3 generation trip and somehow everyone enjoyed every activity planned by Sig and his team. Our days were filled with adventure, as requested, with trips to glaciers and waterfalls, snowmobiling, dogsledding, ATVing while also seeing the major sites. Day 1 - Arrival via the Blue Lagoon

When you arrive in Iceland at Keflavik Airport, your private driver will greet you at the arrival hall and take you to the Blue Lagoon. Where you will have access to the Retreat Spa and soak in geothermal waters. There is a restaurant in the Spa if you want to have a light meal. You can stay up to five hours in the Spa. After enjoying the Blue Lagoon your private driver will take you to your hotel in Reykjavik.

Day 2 - Volcano Hike & Horseback Riding

Start the day by taking a one-hour horseback riding tour right outside of Reykjavik before heading to the amazing Reykjanes Peninsula to en joy a hike to the volcanic eruption site. The Land of Fire and Ice is once again living up to its name! One of the last eruptions in Geldingadalur valley, just south of Fagradalsfjall volcano, left gleaming lava which can be found running in molten rivers and spurting in spectacular jets. The hike will take approximately  1 – 2 hours each way, depending on how close you want to get, and the trail is conveniently marked. This is an ideal hike if the weather conditions are good. This is a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience and should not be missed!

Day 3 - The Golden Circle & Snorkeling

On this day you will drive the Golden Circle route, which includes one of Iceland’s most popular places and attractions. You will start with a stop at Þingvellir National Park and go snorkeling in the Silfra fissure between the two continents (Approx. drive 55 minutes). Afterwards you can learn about the world’s first parliament and enjoy a light hike through the park. You will head to Geysir Geothermal Area to see the exploding geysers and the lively Strokkur which spouts water 30 metres (100 ft) into the air every few minutes. After all this, you will visit Gullfoss Waterfall one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls before your guide will take you to your lodge in South Iceland for the night.

Day 4 - The South Shore & Glacier Walk

On this day you will get right into the action and head straight for the beautiful Icelandic south shore. You will start the day by driving to the Black Sandy Beach, Reynisfjara (Approx. drive 55 minutes). A guide will take you on the ice for a hiking tour on Sólheimajökull glacier. Afterwards you will be taken to see Skógafoss waterfall, which is one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland, with a drop of some 60 meters and a width of 25 meters, which you can walk right up to. On your way back, you will stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall before your guide takes you to your lodge in South Iceland for the night.

Day 5 - Eyjafjallajökull Snowmobiling & Farm Visit

You will start the day by visiting a local farm to get familiar with the Icelandic farm life and enjoy a cup of coffee and Icelandic Pancakes. Afterwards top the day by going snowmobiling up on Eyjafjallajökull – the infamous glacier that erupted in 2010.

Day 6 - Buggy Adventure, Lava Center & City Tour

In the morning you will start an extreme two-hour buggy tour in front of the private lodge and head into the highlands of Thorsmork, after getting your adrenaline flowing for the day you will return to the lodge for a light lunch and start heading to Reykjavik. In the afternoon your private guide will take you to Hallgrimskirkja church tower where you will have a nice panoramic view over the city, Solfar sun voyager, Harpan concert hall, The Old Harbour, and Bessastaðir – the home of the president, and show you around Reykjavik most popular highlights before checking in at hotel. On the way, you will stop at the Lava Center in Hvolsvöllur.

Day 7 - Departure

On the last day you will be picked up by a private driver and driven to the airport in time for your flight. *You have to be at Keflavik airport 2 hours before departure.

Family vacations in Iceland

Adventures inside glaciers and volcanic caves. Swimming and soaking in geothermally heated pools. Modern museums that let you get hands on with history and science. And, on the darkest nights, the chance to see the northern lights together under a starry sky. I’d say a family trip to Iceland will appeal if you have active children who love the outdoors and like to have experiences that take you beyond the everyday.

There are so many ways to fill your time, no matter when in the year you visit Iceland. And, because it’s a relatively compact country, you’ll get to see many of the country’s highlights even if you only have a few days, whether you’re driving yourselves or exploring with a private driver.

I can also help pick hotels with family-friendly rooms, and the guides we use will introduce you to the landscapes, geology, history, and culture of Iceland in ways that will captivate both the young and not-so-young.

Museums & lava shows in Reykjavík

As capital cities go, Reykjavík  feels safe, friendly, and easy to get around thanks to its compact size. What I think most appeals to families here is the wide range of interactive museums. There’s the Saga Museum, which helps bring the country’s Viking heritage to life, drawing on the eventful tales written centuries ago by early settlers. Waxwork figures recreate scenes from the sagas, or you can do so yourself by dressing up as a Viking.

For something more modern, I suggest Perlan, a museum housed in a glass-domed building with an observation deck for taking in views of the city. Inside, the Wonders of Iceland exhibit encourages you to use your senses to touch, smell, and listen as you walk through an ice labyrinth. Meanwhile, the Forces of Nature exhibit lets you feel the rumble of an earthquake and tells you how volcanic activity continues to shape the country’s landscape and culture.

To explore this even further, you could visit the LAVA Centre  or I could arrange tickets to Lava Show, a live educational performance where you watch molten lava in a safe environment, feeling its heat from your seat.

Geysers, waterfalls & bread-making in the Golden Circle

Easy to explore in a day from Reykjavík, the Golden Circle  is a region with a high concentration of geothermal features and powerful waterfalls. There’s no denying that you’ll encounter plenty of visitors at most of the stops on this scenic route, but I’ll make sure you’re exploring either with a private guide or in a small group to get the most from your experience.

Over the course of a few hours, you’ll see geysers spurt water high into the air, watch bubbling mud puddles and steaming pools, walk between the diverging North American and Eurasian tectonic plates in Þingvellir National Park, and stand dwarfed beside ginormous waterfalls like Gulfoss, whose sheer scale and power left me agape.

Well-maintained paths get you close to these natural wonders, and your guide will help explain their geology in ways that interest all ages. The tour also stops at a geothermal bakery, where you’ll see how traditional Icelandic bread is baked naturally in the ground. Your guide will dig out a pot of bread that’s been cooking in the hot black sand for 24 hours, and you’ll get to taste the finished result.

Stocky, shaggy-furred, and full of character, Icelandic horses have adapted to the country’s cool temperatures and rugged terrain over the centuries. They even have two additional gaits to other horses, the tölt, which helps them move smoothly over uneven ground, and the skeið (flying pace).

Their small stature and easy-going nature makes them ideal for children to ride, and I believe there’s no better setting than the black-sand beaches along the south coast . Experienced guides will match each of you with a horse and show you the techniques you need to ride safely. Then you’ll head out in a small group to Víkurfjara .

This volcanic beach is surrounded by cliffs that plunge into the slate-grey sea, and jagged rock formations are battered by the waves just offshore. If you’re feeling confident, your guide can show you how to try the tölt, and experienced riders might also be able to break into a canter.

Whale watching & puffin spotting

The waters surrounding Iceland are frequented by whales year-round, though some species, like humpbacks, only migrate here during the summer. The best way to see them is on a whale-watching trip from Reykjavík, or, if you’re in the north, Husavík or Akureyri .

The boats we use have indoor seats and bathroom facilities on board, so it’s a comfortable experience for the whole family. Naturalist guides will fill you in on the area’s whales and other marine life, helping to point any out as you go. Keep your eyes peeled for minke whales, orcas, white-beaked dolphins, and porpoises.

If you’re there in summer, migratory humpbacks are joined by migratory puffins that come to nest in burrows along the coast. I spied a few flapping their wings vigorously to keep themselves above the waves, while others waddled comically on the rocks or stood patiently outside their burrows as if taking in the view.

Inside the glaciers & lava caves near Húsafell

If your family love outdoor adventure, I recommend basing yourself in the Húsafell region in West Iceland  for a few nights of your trip. Here, velvety-green countryside is interrupted by glacier-hugged mountains and dormant volcanoes. It’s where you’ll find Langjökull  (‘long glacier’), the second-largest glacier in Iceland — and you can join a tour that takes you right inside this dazzling-white giant.

A sturdy ice-adapted vehicle takes you up onto the glacier. After donning crampons, you’re then led into a network of blue-tinged tunnels carved into the ice. The cool air is perfectly still, and if you listen carefully you might hear the ice creaking around you.

As you wind through the well-lit tunnels, your guide tells you more about Langjökull and its geology. At one point during my tour, we entered a cavernous room lined with pews like a chapel. We all sat down and my guide broke into song to demonstrate the excellent acoustics — as good as any symphony hall I’ve been to.

For another subterranean experience nearby, enter Víðgelmir lava cave. Technically a lava tube, it’s part of the Hallmundarhraun lava field, supposedly created when a volcano beneath Langjökull erupted in the 10th century.

You can hear all about its formation on a tour that takes you deep inside the cave along safe walkways. Strategic lighting illuminates the dark, twisted rock walls, revealing rust-orange and neon-green shades and otherworldly formations that lay hidden for centuries. Your guide will also share local tales that are rooted in the cave, explaining how Iceland’s geology has shaped the country’s folklore.

Meeting rare Icelandic goats in Borgarfjörður

Háafell Goat Farm is a stopping place I suggest if you’re exploring West Iceland, especially if you have younger children. The owners keep Icelandic goats, a breed that’s existed here for centuries, but came to the brink of extinction in the 19th century.

You can visit the farm between June and August to get up close and personal with the goats. They’re used to human interaction and happily skip and play in front of you — you can even pose with them for a family photo.

There’s a small shop selling goat-based products like soap, cheese, and cashmere. And, if you fall in love with the goats, you can adopt one (symbolically, that is), knowing the proceeds will go toward conserving the species.

Seals & strength tests on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Also in the west, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula  is like a microcosm of Iceland due to its patchwork of natural features. There’s Snæfellsjökull National Park, dominated by its namesake volcano and glacier (which you might know from Jules Verne’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth ). Add to that stark lava fields, black-sand beaches, and streaky waterfalls. And, the distinctive Kirkufell peak, which rises like a wizard’s hat and made an appearance in Game of Thrones .

For families, I always suggest spending time on the beaches here. They’re usually quiet, as most visitors to Iceland flock to those on the south. If you head to Ytri Tunga beach, you have a good chance of spying the resident seal colony lazing across the rocks against a backdrop of the dark-blue water. I recommend bringing binoculars or a camera with a decent zoom so you can view them from a distance.

There’s also Djúpalónssandur, a black-pebble beach sitting in an arch-shaped bay. You can learn a little about the fishing history here and all have a go at picking up the four ‘lifting stones’, once used as a strength test for would-be sailors. I even struggled to lift the Amlóði (weakling) stone, which weighs 23 kg (50 lbs). The heaviest, Fullsterkur (full strong), is 154 kg (340 lbs) and only one sailor is said to have ever raised it off the ground.

Geothermal swimming pools at Vök Baths

If your children love being in the water, I’d say Iceland is ideal — wherever you are, you’re unlikely to be far from a thermal pool. Everyone’s heard of the Blue Lagoon , but for a less crowded experience, I suggest heading to one of the country’s lesser-known baths.

Around an hour and a half’s drive from Reykjavík, Secret Lagoon is Iceland’s oldest swimming pool, opening in 1891. Its large expanse of water is surrounded by countryside and has a simple design, so it feels natural. And, children aged 14 and under enter for free.

If you’re venturing further afield to East Iceland, Vök Baths is a popular spot with locals. I love its location — the series of geothermal infinity pools appears to ‘float’ above the water of Urriðavatn lake. In fact, you can plunge into the lake for a refreshing contrast to the bathwater-warm pools.

Northern lights tours from Reykjavík

A winter trip to Iceland usually has one key goal: to witness the northern lights. The phenomenon is never guaranteed, but Iceland’s proximity to the Arctic Circle gives you a good chance if you’re visiting for a few days. You can boost your chances by joining a northern lights tour from Reykjavík . Some hotels, like Hotel Rangá , also offer a wake-up call for if the lights show during the night.

Best family-friendly stays in Iceland

Many hotels in Iceland include family-sized rooms or the option to add an extra bed for a child. This is particularly the case in Reykjavík, where I like Centerhotel Miðgarður , if you’re a family of three. Black Pearl Apartments gives you extra space and amenities — the largest suites can accommodate up to six guests and have their own kitchen for the flexibility of eating in.

If you’re exploring more rurally on your trip, stays can be more limited. Hotel Rangá is my go-to for the south coast. It has snug and stylish log cabins, some with an extra ‘wall bed’, an observatory for stargazing and viewing the northern lights, geothermal hot tubs, and a games room.

Toward the west, Hotel Húsafell  is close to Langjökull and Víðgelmir lava cave and has rooms with sofa beds for up to two children. It’s also a good option thanks to its small play area and outdoor pool complete with waterslide.

Getting around with children in Iceland

How you get around in Iceland depends on the time of year. Between May and late September, you can drive yourself around the country in a rental car that’s a suitable size for your family, complete with child seats (though you may prefer to bring your own).

Iceland’s roads are well maintained and clearly signed, and you won’t need to drive long distances to see many of the country’s highlights. Between October and April, we’ll arrange for you to have a private driver who’s used to navigating the wintry conditions.

Alternatively, you could base yourself in Reykjavík for the entire trip and simply head out on guided outings from there. Or, we can arrange for you to get across larger distances via short domestic flights.

The route I recommend for families visiting Iceland  focuses on just three areas: the Húsafell region, including Langjökull, the south coast, and Reykjavík.

Best school vacations to travel to Iceland

Iceland can fit nicely into most school vacations — it all depends on what you want to experience. If you visit during the festive holidays or spring break, you have a chance of seeing the northern lights and can make the most of Reykjavík and the highlights closer to the capital. Meanwhile, summer lends itself to outdoor exploration, wildlife encounters, and scenic drives for exploring further afield.

Similar to many other parts of Europe , Iceland has rules in place to help preserve its culture and geographic isolation is also a factor in developing and preserving the country’s cultural qualities. Independence, self-sufficiency and a strong work ethic – traits that allowed this northern island to flourish in challenging conditions – continue to be highly valued today.

Icelandic culture and customs are full of myths and legends, many with a connection to Christian and pagan values. Folk tales of elves, gnomes, fairies and trolls still circulate, and whether or not the locals continue telling these to unlock the secrets of the past, or simply in jest, they’re definitely worth listening to. But when news outlets report on road plans being changed to avoid disrupting an elfin church, it’s easy to believe that this unusual country and its magical landscapes are a product of what lies ‘hidden’ in its mysterious depths.

Today, Iceland is a highly modern and progressive society. It is consistently rated as having the smallest gender pay gap and strong LGBTQIA+ rights representation in the parliament and media. It’s also one of the greenest countries in the world, with almost all energy coming from renewable resources such as hydropower and geothermal.

History and government

Pre-modern history.

This island nation was settled by Vikings in the ninth century, with much of the early literature recognizing Norse sailor Ingolfur Arnason as the first settler of Iceland, founding Reykjavik in AD874 along with his wife and brother. Icelanders remain proud to this day of their Viking heritage. The Icelandic language, for example, is so similar to the Old Norse spoken during Viking times that Icelanders can still read and understand the original Icelandic sagas.

A book of settlements titled Landnamabok, compiled in the 12th century, documents the names and other details of nearly 400 original settlers of Iceland who arrived in the ninth and tenth centuries. The document tells of a Norse Viking called Floki who sailed to Iceland for fishing and farming, however, due to his livestock not surviving in the conditions, had to return to his home in Norway. After heading up a mountain and looking over a fjord full of sea ice, he named this land Iceland.

In AD930, an Icelandic General Assembly was established and was deemed a Christian settlement less than a century later. Settlers and slaves brought to Iceland by Scandinavians were of Irish and Norse descent, and although some still debate which communities influenced the identity we now know to be Icelandic, the first distinctive text documenting ‘Icelandic-ness’ is said to be a rule book of sorts – the First Grammatical Treatise.

20th century and today

After long periods under Norwegian and Danish rule, Iceland was recognized as a sovereign state in 1918. On 17 June 1944, Iceland became an independent republic. It has a multi-party parliamentary system and a written constitution. The parliament is still called Althingi after its medieval General Assembly.

Many of Iceland’s major industries stem from its location and surrounding natural resources. Tourism aside, fishing and seafood products make up much of the country’s exports and employ a majority of the workforce along with agriculture and farming. Recent investment in greenhouses and geothermal energy has seen Iceland become increasingly self-sufficient, growing products that usually do not fare well in icy climates, such as potatoes, tomatoes and potted plants. Other food is imported along with many consumer goods.

Eating and drinking

Flanked by the ocean and inhabited by almost twice the amount of sheep as humans, Iceland understandably boasts a cuisine dominated by seafood and local lamb.

The country’s diet relies on plenty of potatoes and lamb, but seafood trumps all – sourced fresh year-round from the waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic and prepared in a variety of ways. Be sure to try Hardfiskur – a salty fish jerky, best enjoyed buttered.

Sheep and cows are free-range and fed chemical-free diets, making lamb and dairy products exceptionally good here. One of the best ways to enjoy the produce on offer is to warm yourself up from the inside out with a hearty meat soup: a mixture of lamb, root vegetables, herbs, and rice.

Skyr, a popular yogurt that is technically a cheese, is also a must-try in all its variety of flavors. Eat it like the locals do at any time of the day – for breakfast, as a snack, as a dipping sauce, in drink form (called drykkur), or as a dessert topping.

Surprisingly, hot dogs are Iceland’s most iconic fast food. Widely available, a hot dog is probably the cheapest meal you’ll have in Iceland. Order one with all the toppings – sweet mustard, ketchup, raw onions, deep-fried onions, and aioli.

Rye bread (also known as rugbraud) and butter is a common side to most meals in Iceland, but the preferred way of cooking the loaves are quite unique. Traditionally, the bread is buried near a natural hot spring, sprinkled with sugar, and left to gently steam for up to 24 hours. The end result is dense, cake-like bread that has a slightly sweet taste. Enjoy it with a traditional Icelandic soup, smoked lamb, or, of course, fish.

Name a food and chances are Icelanders have tried to add licorice to it. Black licorice is beloved by locals and found in a wide range of desserts and candy bars. During your time here, head to Valdis in Reykjavik to test out a cone filled with salted black licorice ice cream. Even if the weather’s cold, the ice cream joints will be open!

The weird and wacky

Icelanders have a reputation for serving up some of the most unusual food in the world – boiled sheep’s head, fermented shark known as harkarl, ram testicles and smoked puffin to name a few. Although the country’s isolation and harsh winters once meant these foods were eaten out of necessity, today most of these ‘delicacies’ are only prepared to shock tourists. Try if you dare, but we suggest sticking to the common foods that locals eat.

Alcohol can be expensive in Iceland and is best bought at the duty-free shop. Although forms of prohibition existed until 1989, alcohol is now widely available all over the country in state-run liquor stores. If you’re feeling brave, try the local brew, Brennivin – a potent, traditional caraway-flavored schnapps nicknamed ‘black death’.

Geography and environment

1. Northern Lights

The Northern Hemisphere's Aurora Borealis has captivated and intrigued travelers for years. Any winter tour of Iceland absolutely must include a chance to see the Northern Lights. This natural light display that runs along magnetic fields often brings hypnotic green, yellow and red shades to the night sky in Iceland from September to March. As one of nature's most magnificent triumphs, this is one unforgettable spectacle.

2. Gullfoss

Otherwise known as Golden Falls, this spectacular three-tiered waterfall drops suddenly into a deep cavern. The falls are surrounded by lush, green countryside, and the rainbows created by the mist and spray provide brilliant photo opportunities.

3. Lake Myvatn

This part of northern Iceland was born from volcanic eruptions millions of years ago and continues to be shaped by volcanic activity to this day. The combination of strange lava formations, thermal caves and a sprawling lake dotted with craters and rising rocks makes for an eerie yet beautiful landscape.

4. Jokulsarlon

Literally translating to ‘glacial river lagoon’, this monumental glacier lake is the largest in Iceland. Featuring a parade of large and small blue icebergs floating on and under the pure, icy water, this lagoon is so beautiful that it has been used as a backdrop for Hollywood films, a set for reality television shows and in a starring role on a postage stamp!

Iceland is notorious for being an expensive destination. Travelling on a budget here is difficult but can be done. Head to Bonus – Iceland’s discount grocery store – so you can cook rather than eat out for each meal. The duty-free store at Keflavik International Airport is the best place to pick up a bottle of Icelandic alcohol such as Brennivin liquor, Reyka vodka or Viking Gold beer for a fraction of the price you’d find elsewhere. It’s also a good idea to travel as a group, as operators can get better rates than a single traveler at hotels and restaurants, plus they know all the local hotspots.

If you’d like to take home Icelandic local specialties, Reykjavik is the best place to shop. Some of the country’s coolest retailers can be found on Laugavegur, one of the oldest shopping streets. Here you can browse clothing from quirky local designers alongside traditional lambswool sweaters, as well as tourist shops selling plastic Viking hats and puffin magnets. For smaller boutiques selling local art, head to Skolavordustigur.

Festival and events

Despite the long and dark winters, Icelanders are among the happiest people in the world. Why? One reason is that they understand the importance of getting together and having a good time, even if it’s pitch black outside. There are many celebrations to join in on throughout the year, but here are a few to look out for:

Winter Lights Festival

Every year, buildings around Reykjavik light up at night to celebrate both the winter world and the growing light after a long period of darkness. The Winter Lights Festival uses many public buildings, all major museums, and thermal pools to illuminate the city with lighting designs and art installations to thaw people out after a long winter.

This annual mid-winter feast in January or February is one of Iceland’s oldest festivals, dating back to Viking days. Fearless eaters can find restaurants in Reykjavik offering special Thorrablot dinners of boiled sheep’s heads, rotten shark’s meat, and cured ram testicles. If you can, try to snag an invitation to a local’s house, where celebrations tend to be more festive and involve lots of singing, dancing and drinking.

Viking Festival

Modern-day Vikings in traditional garb flock to Hafnarfjorour each June for a festival Leif Erikson would approve of. Swordfights, archery, axe throwing, a traditional market, concerts, and a proper Viking feast are all part of the festivities.

National Day

1944 marks the year that Iceland became a republic after an overwhelming majority of the citizens voted for independence. The deciding referendum took place between May 20 and 23 that year; however, Iceland’s National Day is celebrated on June 17th – the birthday of the man who originally led the movement in the late 19th century, Jon Sigurdsson. There are parades all around the country, usually with brass bands and marching horses. Music, food, fireworks, and street parties – you get it, they’re a patriotic bunch.

Dalvik Fiskidagurinn Mikli (The Great Fish Day)

Each August, the northern fishing village of Dalvik invites you to a free, all-you-can-eat fish and seafood buffet. The event is held for no reason other than to bring people together over a delicious meal. You might come for the free food, but you’ll stay for the company.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit Iceland?

Deciding what you want to see in Iceland will give you a better idea of when is the best time to travel. Wanting to get active around the countryside and see waterfalls and wildlife? The warmer spring and summer months are probably ideal. Prefer to soak in the geothermal lagoons and get a chance to see the Northern Lights? Well, likely the cooler months – with their longer nights – are best for you.

Spring and summer are considered optimal times to visit Iceland if green landscapes and balmy days are your thing. The early spring months bring warmer days, while summer offers long daylight hours with only short nights. In the summer season, July and August are the warmest months and the busiest time for tourists.

In September, tourism tends to slow down as the weather becomes unpredictable and the countryside is usually less accessible. However, there are plenty of attractions for the off-peak traveler, including the beauty of fall colors and, of course, the awe-inspiring Northern Lights.

As you might expect, winters in Iceland can be challenging. During late December there are about four-and-a-half hours of daylight and it's often cloudy. In January, there are on average three sunny days in Reykjavík, with temperatures hovering around freezing point, often with chilling winds.

Do I need a visa to travel to Iceland?

Iceland is a member of the Schengen Convention, which means that if you travel to an EU member country or countries, like Iceland, for a total of less than 90 days, a visa is not required. Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, the UK and other member countries of the EU and Schengen area are included under this arrangement. Other countries do require a visa to visit Iceland, including citizens of South Africa.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your country of origin. Is tipping customary in Iceland?

Tipping isn't expected in Iceland. Hotels, restaurants and cafes already include a service fee and consumption taxes (VAT) in the bill, so tipping extra isn't necessary. However, feel free to leave a small amount if your experience has been particularly good, especially for assistance provided by drivers, tour leaders or service workers.

What is the internet access like in Iceland?

Travelers will be able to access the internet in cybercafes and at wi-fi hotspots in Iceland's cities and large towns. Rural and remote areas may have less internet access, so be prepared when traveling away from the city.

Most accommodation and eateries in Iceland offer wi-fi access, which is usually free to use with a code. If you wish to stay connected for the majority of your trip, it may be wise to purchase a prepaid SIM card with a data package.

Many Icelandic libraries and tourist information offices have shared computers for public internet access if you are without a device to connect to wi-fi. Sometimes a small fee is charged for this service.

Can I use my cell phone while in Iceland?

Travelers can use their cell phones in Iceland's main cities and towns, though remote and isolated areas may have inferior cell reception.

If you wish to stay connected for the majority of your trip, it may be wise to purchase a prepaid SIM card for the duration of your journey. This will likely be the cheapest way to use your phone in Iceland.

For EU citizens, depending on who you have your phone plan with, you may be able to use your current SIM in Iceland – your service provider will be able to provide more details.

Global roaming can also be activated, but check with your service provider to find out about any fees you may incur, as sometimes this can be expensive.

What are the toilets like in Iceland?

Modern, flushable toilets are the standard in Iceland.

In terms of public toilets, Reykjavik and other major towns and cities have some, but along highways and at many tourist destinations – especially campgrounds and natural attractions – there is a lack of facilities. Expect to pay a small fee when visiting public toilets and, in busy months, expect queues in main tourist areas.

There have been recent occurrences of tourists resorting to other means in remote places and near tourist sites. We recommend being prepared and talking to your group leader if you have any concerns.

Can I drink the water in Iceland?

Tap water is considered safe to drink in Iceland unless marked otherwise. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Iceland?

Credit cards are widely accepted in Iceland and are used frequently by locals to pay for just about anything. Paying with a credit card at shops, guesthouses, supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, and on taxi rides shouldn't present a problem. Iceland is almost a cashless society, so cards are the best option; however, a lot of payments will require your four-digit PIN, so be sure to know this before you leave home.

What is ATM access like in Iceland?

ATMs are usually easy to find in Iceland's cities and villages and generally accept most foreign cards.

What is the weather like in Iceland?

Iceland’s temperatures are cool and do vary throughout the year. In winter months, minimum temperatures plummet to below freezing. In Reykjavik, summer temperatures average at around 52°F, while winter maximums are approximately 32°F. Rainfall is quite consistent throughout the year; between 25–50 mm per month, with most days experiencing some rainfall.

Is it safe to travel to Iceland?

Iceland is a very safe country to travel to and is one of the safest countries in the world.

Is Iceland safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

The people of Iceland have an open and accepting attitude to LGBTQIA+ communities, and Iceland is considered one of the world’s most LGBTQIA+ friendly countries. Since 2006, same-sex couples have had equal access to adoption and IVF, and in 2010 the Icelandic Parliament made a unanimous decision to define marriage as between two individuals. As might be expected in a small country, however, the gay scene is quite low-key, even in Reykjavik.

In 2012, more legislation was passed to formalize the name and identity-changing process for the needs of trans and genderqueer individuals. There is still a way to go to achieve full equality, but Iceland is, in many regards, leading the way globally.

Some of the main sights, such as the Blue Lagoon, are wheelchair accessible, but many of the natural attractions have unpaved paths and unsteady terrain. Iceland has a dedicated information center,  Thekkingarmidstod Sjalfsbjorg , that provides up-to-date information on accessibility and accessible facilities in Iceland, as well as other related information.

If you do live with a visual, hearing, or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you, and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What to wear in Iceland

In summer, Iceland experiences cool but mild weather throughout the country, with maximum temperatures averaging around 55°F. It’s still important, however, to pack some warm clothing at this time, as temperatures at night can drop quite dramatically. In winter, some days barely reach over 32°F, so preparing for this is crucial. It can be wet and windy, and roads may be iced over, so thermal gear, a waterproof jacket and pants and sturdy walking boots are all highly recommended.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Golden Circle:

This driving route encompasses many of Iceland's most renowned natural wonders, including Thingvellir National Park, the nation’s most historic area. Icelanders gathered here in A.D. 930 and established one of the world’s first parliaments. Also this is one of the globe’s most geologically significant landscapes. It marks the point where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet.

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall:

This beautiful cascade is one of Iceland’s most famous and picturesque waterfalls. It is an impressive sight where water falls from a sheer cliff plunging 210 feet below. Vatnajökull National Park:

It is a fascinating place where the powerful interchange of volcanoes and glaciers or fire and ice are continually at odds.

Aurora Borealis:

Each year, during the winter months, the magical but elusive northern lights (aurora borealis) appear. This natural phenomenon is the product of collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth's atmosphere; the results are spectacular! Streaks of colorful light appear across the sky. This light show is truly dazzling and worth the pursuit.

Blue Lagoon:

On the Reykjanes Peninsula, known for its rugged landscape, lava fields, and hot springs, sits the famous Blue Lagoon. Formed during the operation of a nearby geothermal power plant, it is a place where science harmonizes with nature. The waters are renowned for their healing properties. Visitors dip in the pleasantly warm, mineral-rich waters located in the middle of a dramatic lava field in the hopes of leaving with a youthful glow.

Skogar Folk Museum:

The museum’s founder Thordur Tomasson started this museum with his personal collection of artifacts back in 1949. It has grown tremendously under his direction. Today you will find an extensive collection of tools, handicrafts, books, manuscripts, and documents. And on the grounds there is a substantial open-air museum with many traditional Icelandic buildings including a chapel and schoolhouse.

Cruise Jökulsárlón Lagoon:

This glacial lagoon is famous for its countless icebergs. The lagoon is fed from the melting waters of the massive Vatnajökull glacier. It is an incredible experience to board a small boat and venture out in the tranquil waters to get up close to these mighty chunks of ice while surrounded by immense beauty. On your adventure, you may even get the opportunity to taste the 1,000 year old glacial ice.

This Icelandic delicacy made from shark meat offers a unique window into Icelandic culture. For over 400 years, the people of Iceland have hunted the Greenland shark. The locals cure and hang the meat to dry for 4 to 5 months producing this delicacy known as “hakare.” Take the opportunity to learn the process and give it a try! It is sure to be like nothing you have ever tried before. Eating it is considered a sign of hardiness among the locals.

No fancy clothes required. Dress casual, comfortable and most importantly, in layers. The weather can change at any moment. Wind and rain are common, so I suggest packing waterproof clothes and shoes, and bringing a hooded windbreaker and an umbrella.

You may find yourself wondering, is that an abandoned baby carriage, with a baby inside!? Relax, no worries, the parents are just inside dining. Yes that is right, it is Icelandic culture to leave the baby outside a café or restaurant. No need to alert the authorities, the baby is safe, and it is a common practice.
