What Makes the Travel Master a Luxury Motorhome?

Coachman’s Travel Master 545 was named Luxury Motorhome of the Year in the 2023 awards from MMM , The Motorhomer’s Magazine. The accolade awarded to this terrific luxury vehicle was well deserved and, here, we’ll look a little further into the reasons why the Travel Master caught the attention of the judges and garnered their praise. We’ll explain some of the important qualities the range showcases to make it one of the finest luxury motorhomes available.

1.   Design and Craftsmanship

With a meticulous attention to detail in the design and build stages of manufacturing – a company strength which is imbued throughout all motorhomes in their range – the two model Travel Master (545 and 565) showcases the finest that the best quality motorhome manufacturer Coachman has to offer.

In addition to the sleek exterior, which offers genuine kerb appeal, the Travel Master features stunning interiors, luxurious but with no compromise on functionality. There is a high quality aesthetic throughout, with premium fabrics and other materials, including the unique ‘Nordic Oak’ wood colour scheme, used to create an environment in each vehicle which is truly inviting.

2.   Driving

It’s not just the fixtures and fittings which make the Travel Master a premium luxury motorhome . It has superior drive and handling, with plenty of features and efficiencies for drivers to savour. It’s built on a 4,500kg Mercedes AL-KO chassis with 170bhp engine – so there is plenty of horsepower and torque.

The suspension systems guarantee a stable ride, absorbing imperfections in the road with ease, and the excellent nine-speed automatic transmission gearbox and driver assistance technology (ABS and automatic braking, plus cab air conditioning, reversing camera, infotainment system, crosswind assist, wipers rain sensor and headlight assist) make for smooth hassle-free journeys every time. In addition, the breathable fabric-backed aluminium inner walls create a slightly hushed ambience and help to filter out unwanted exterior noise when you’re on the move – always a bonus!

3.   Living

The wider body of the Travel Master (at just over 8 feet) offers the luxury of plenty of additional floor space in social areas, meaning travellers will feel right at home. Up front in the living area, deep pile stain resistant loose lay carpets and sprung upholstery seating with higher back rests ooze luxury. In both the 545 and 565 the lounge features occasional and free-standing tables (with even a dedicated storage spot for the latter during travel) so you always have somewhere handy to eat your meals or, at either end of the day, put your coffee cup, mobile phone and newspaper.

Throughout the Travel Master, well-considered storage options and particularly clever use of space for the layout of individual areas makes for a very tidy on the road life. Smaller features, such as the sockets, USB ports, coat hooks and open shelving just inside the habitation door, are delightful touches which further the sense of a really well thought out luxury environment. It’s not totally about the interior living, though – there are also external gas and shower points.

4.   Eating

With a fully equipped kitchen, there will be no worries about cooking in the Travel Master – and cooking in luxury, at that.

Acrylic glass locker doors with soft close hinges, high gloss worktops, chrome tap, ambient lighting, under-counter pull-out storage trays and drawer storage with travel lock mechanism all combine to provide convenience, but immediately highlight that Coachman’s customary attention to luxury detailing is present and correct, even in this most functional of domestic spaces. The Thetford dual fuel hob features electronic ignition, a flame failure device and a glass lid, so is designed for safety as well as catering. The Travel Master also carries a microwave oven and a Dometic 10.5T series 171 litre fridge freezer and, topping it all off and adding in even more comfort, there’s an integrated extractor fan.

5.   Sleeping

The washroom in the Travel Master is fairly central and is split across the aisle, meaning by simply swinging the toilet compartment door you can ‘shut off’ and make an en suite to the rear bedroom – which, in the 545, features a rear island bed and in the 565 features twin singles. Further sleeping space is provided by the electrically operated drop down double bed over the living area up front, essentially meaning that when it’s time for everyone to sleep the Travel Master is essentially two bedroom space with a washroom divider, offering great privacy for all.

6.   Keeping Control

The operation of the drop-down electric bed, the lights and even the level of electric power you want to draw from the mains, plus the pumping out of waste water from its tank, are all controllable from an easily operated control panel, which has been developed in partnership with Dometic.

The Travel Master, in both iterations, is a seriously impressive luxury motorhome, with a clear focus on top quality, high standard specification and terrific winterisation standards. Coachman Travel Master 560 2022

The renowned British caravan manufacturer has taken the plunge into the motorhome market and the results are impressive, says Sarah Wakely

If you’ve ever set foot inside an industry show – and most of us probably have – you’ll be aware of Coachman Caravans. This Hull-based manufacturer is a big name in the touring caravan market: formed in 1986, it has built a strong reputation for quality over the years. It’s won the overall trophy in our previous two Owner Satisfaction Awards, held by our sister title Practical Caravan – our guide to the best caravan manufacturers will tell you more.

But Swedish motorhome and caravan manufacturer Kabe bought Coachman in 2021, from which point on, it only felt like a matter of time before the first Coachman motorhome was launched. And in a move that wasn’t a complete surprise, the Coachman Travel Master made its debut at the recent NEC show .

There are three models in the range at launch, including the island-bed 545, and the twin-bed 565, all based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter/Al-Ko chassis. Here, we take a look at the third model, the French (corner) bed 560, the shortest of the trio at 7.6m. Prices start from £105,715, but the model we looked at was £107,015.

All three Travel Masters feature an MTPLM of 4500kg, so you’ll need a C1 category on your licence, but the pay-off for that is a large payload. Final figures are yet to be confirmed, but the estimated 950kg of the 560 model should be plenty.

You pay a premium price for any Mercedes-based ’van, but there’s no denying you get a significant amount of driver-related kit for your outlay. Among the many features offered on the Sprinter base are ESP, ABS, automatic braking, attention assist, crosswind assist… the list goes on.  

Under the bonnet is the Mercedes 2.0-litre 170hp engine; here, it’s twinned with nine-speed automatic transmission and offers 295lb ft of torque at 1700-2400rpm.  

Step in through the nearside habitation door and you find a motorhome layout that provides a spacious lounge, with a side sofa and a forward-facing bench seat with two belts.  

Both of the leather-clad cab chairs swivel to join these rear seats, and the addition of the freestanding table provides a roomy area for all occupants to dine and relax.

The cool greys and browns – officially called ‘Nordic Oak’ – of the upholstery and furnishings look and feel smart and good quality, and betray the vehicle’s Scandinavian heritage. A large rooflight above the lounge helps increase natural light.

Across from the door is the motorhome’s kitchen – it’s not huge, but the stainless-steel sink with infill increases the amount of workspace. You get a Thetford dual-fuel hob with electric ignition and full oven/grill alongside. There’s an extractor fan, and a microwave; the latter sits above the 171-litre, two-way opening fridge-freezer.

The washroom, alongside the fixed bed and tucked into the offside rear corner, is not enormous, but provides a spacious square shower cubicle with three shelves, a swivelling Thetford toilet and a decent-sized handbasin. There’s a mirrored vanity unit and cupboards below the basin.

The double bed at the rear, with its plush headboard and spotlights, comes in at 1.94m; the electrically operated drop-down bed over the lounge is 1.98m long. It has a slight corner cutaway to allow access to the habitation door.

If you spend north of £100,000 on a motorhome, you’ll want to be able to use it all year, and the Travel Master features a high level of winterisation – as you’d expect from a ’van with Scandinavian origins. The heating is provided by Alde’s wet central system, and Kabe’s AGS II waterborne underfloor heating makes an appearance. Both of the water tanks are heated.  

And don’t worry if you plan to travel to hotter climes: roof-mounted air-con comes fitted as standard.  

Our test model had a roll-out Thule awning, a £1300 optional extra, and a 140W solar panel, which is standard fit.

We’ve waited a long time to see a Coachman motorhome, and we’re impressed with the results. It’s certainly not cheap, and you’ll need to weigh up carefully if you’d prefer the additional space offered by a luxury A-class from a Continental manufacturer for similar money. But the Travel Master feels well built and well executed: it’s an interesting start from Coachman, and we look forward to seeing more models in years to come.

Grand master

It’s not cheap but Coachman’s ‘big’ entry into the world of motorhoming makes quite a statement, says Nick Harding

Now under the control of the Swedish leisure vehicle manufacturer KABE, renowned caravan maker Coachman has branched out into the motorhome sector. A full four-berth, the 565 reviewed here, was one of three initial Travel Master models introduced, all based on a Mercedes Sprinter/Al-Ko chassis combination. Coachman is looking to expand the range during 2023; there’s even a 3,500kg variant in the pipeline.  

Build quality – 94%

Pretty much all the building work is being undertaken in Sweden by KABE, and, in a word, it’s superb. The body features aluminium outer and inner walls and top-quality insulation – all of which should mean fewer cold spots.  

At 2.78m wide (with mirrors extended) and over 8m long and with a maximum weight of 4,500kg, this is a big motorhome. It features a roof-mounted Dometic Freshjet air conditioner as standard as well as a 140W solar panel (with intelligent battery sensor). Other features include flush-fitting side windows and a habitation door (on the UK nearside) with inset step. Moulded steps allow easier access at each cab door, too.  

The intensive testing by KABE at its manufacturing base includes sessions in a cold chamber that will take temperatures down to -40ºC, testing the insulation to its fullest. Airflow within the vehicle is also assessed to ensure cold spots are minimalised and there are no build-ups of moisture.

The garage, accessed via chunky doors with double locks and pneumatic struts, is large enough for bikes, barbecues and more. Facilities here are excellent. There’s a quartet of lockers, one housing the central heating boiler, another home to all the electrical fittings (including the leisure battery, perfectly insulated against extreme cold). You’ll also find some open shelving, a 230V and 12V socket plus a large isolator switch, on/off switch for the solar panel, high- and low-level rails with adjustable lashing points – even a drainage plug for any unwanted water getting in.

A slight anomaly – the fresh water tank (not the largest, at 87 litres) is slightly smaller than the waste one (90 litres).

Driving – 90%

With an MRO of 3,650kg, the Travel Master 565 is one of the heaviest motorhomes I’ve ever reviewed (you’ll need category C1 on your licence to pilot one of these).  

There’s just the one engine offering – 170bhp with a gratifyingly smooth nine-speed transmission. In terms of economy, if you can beat 25mpg you’ll be doing well.

There’s an equally impressive set-up in the cab, with Coachman opting for the MBUX infotainment system upgrade that includes a 10in touchscreen, DAB radio, Apple CarPlay, reversing camera and more. The cab seats are heated, leather upholstered and have plenty of adjustment, while features such as the folding handbrake allow for easier seat swivelling.

There’s also a clever facility for two to travel in the back, with the offside settee base moving through 90˚ to become a forward-facing double seat and a backrest section that slides out – it’s a hefty, reassuring piece of engineering. (Note that the head supports, which you’ll need to add for safer travel, were not available for this test).

Daytime – 88%

The Travel Master’s wider body means there’s some vital extra floor space in the lounge (and indeed elsewhere). The lounge has occasional and free-standing tables, the latter stowing in a dedicated storage spot next to the fridge for travel.

As well as offering great insulation, the breathable fabric-backed aluminium inner walls provide a slightly hushed ambience. They also help suppress any unwanted noise when you’re on the move.

Add the Alde radiator and hot water system with underfloor heating to the mix and you have a cosy motorhome when temperatures start to drop..  

Night-time – 85%

They’re set fairly high, with permanent steps for access, but you get two 1.96m (6ft 5in) x 0.82m (2ft 8in) single beds with a fixed centre section between them (if you prefer a permanent double, the sister model 545 sports an island bed). There are windows each side with a Heki rooflight overhead.  

It is 1.98m (6ft 6in) long, but the drop-down double is rather narrow, with a width of 1.09m (3ft 7in) tapering to 0.84m (2ft 9in) to allow access at the habitation door.

Kitchen – 75%

The 565’s more than generously equipped kitchen lacks only in worktop space. The Thetford cooker has an electric hotplate, three gas rings, separate grill and oven, while there is a circular, stainless steel sink adjacent. Storage is particularly good: a trio of soft-close drawers (the top one for cutlery, the lowest including two removable plastic waste bins) and a narrow slide-out section with pockets, all featuring travel safety catches. There are also two overhead lockers – both with adjustable shelving.  

Across the corridor is an automatic energy selection Dometic fridge-freezer with a total capacity of 171 litres and dual-hinged doors. Though impressive, many will consider the location of the microwave oven too high.  

Washroom– 78%

Services are split between a spacious, fully lined shower cubicle and a toilet room, with the solid door to the latter also able to act as a shut-off for complete privacy from the kitchen and lounge. The shower cubicle , which sits partly on the wheel arch, includes a showerhead on a riser bar. There’s just the one drainage point, though. Another slight negative is that the toilet room lacks a window.

Details – 80%

The main control panel – developed in conjunction with Dometic – looks after everything, including the operation of the electric bed, the dimmable lights, even the amount of mains electric power you want to draw and pumping out water from the (heated) waste water tank.

A well-thought-out living area includes coat hooks and open shelving – ideal for keys etc – just inside the habitation door. There’s no shortage of direct and ambient interior lighting. Plus, no matter where you are, a 230V socket and/or USB port seems to be within easy reach.

Look out, also, for the proper lockers in the over-cab section and the discreet flatscreen television holder in the lounge.  

The water filler point and fridge vents on the awning side are unlikely to worry folk. There are also external gas and shower points. A full-length, wind-out awning is the only option added here (£1,300), shaving a barely noticeable 30kg from the 850kg payload.

Verdict – 84%

Superbly built with a popular UK floorplan. It was never going to be cheap, but the price does already include most, if not all, of the equipment you’ll need.
