Small Group Tours & Travel

Small Group Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Small group tours have some distinct advantages over larger tours: they can generally move more quickly from one place to the next, eat in more intimate dining spaces, stay in smaller hotels or inns, and travel in smaller vehicles, among other perks.

Depending on the tour operator, a "small group" may number anywhere from a few people up to 24, though more traditionally it means a maximum of 12-16 travelers.  Biking  and  hiking tours ,  trekking expeditions , and other adventurous and exotic tours tend to be small groups, but any type of tour can fall into this ever-more-popular category.

Why Take a Small Group Tour

More Authentic Experiences

In most cases, small group tours tend to offer more in-depth, authentic experiences than traveling on a coach or bus tour. This is mostly a result of the flexibility you have in a small group. For example, you’re walking around a rural area in Brazil and come across a pick-up soccer match (or futbol to the Brazilians).

You and your travel companions stand and watch and are then invited to play! These types of memories are often what turns a good trip into a great one, and are more likely when traveling in a small group.

The smaller a group of people traveling together, the more possible it is for a local guide to get access to behind-the-scenes and off-hours sightseeing (the Acropolis at dawn in Greece - sure!), as well as immersive experiences in local villages, restaurants, family homes and more.

The meticulous staff of your chosen small group tour operator has more leeway and creativity when planning your all-inclusive adventures - that may mean more unique, boutique-style accommodations, hands-on cooking classes that lead directly to a family-style meal and guided sightseeing by luxury vehicle (as opposed to that big tour bus).

Connecting With Fellow Travelers

You may or may not travel in a group to make friends. However, you are almost sure to come away from your trip with at least one or two new “pen pals.” Traveling in this style affords real connections among the group - whether this be chatting around a campfire while on safari in Tanzania or catching up at happy hour on the deck of your small-ship cruise .

You might not relate to everyone but will find that most small-group travelers are like-minded and are there for the same reasons. This creates a convivial social vibe and you’ll feel much less like a face in the crowd and more like one of a group of friends who have chosen to explore the world together.

Less Hassle

One of the best perks of small group travel is the fact that most of your vacation is planned for you. Sure, you may love to pore over guidebooks and websites, learning as much as you can about where you’re going. But wouldn’t it be nice to focus on all the amazing things you’re going to see and do instead of worrying about how to cobble it all together in a seamless itinerary?

That’s where your expert small group tour operator comes in. They know these destinations intimately and have curated trips that highlight not only the major sightseeing attractions that you won’t want to miss, but filled in the gaps with immersive, authentic experiences along the way - the kind of moments you most likely won’t find in any guidebook or website.

Small group tours are much less hassle than either a large group tour or arranging your travel yourself. Your in country airfare, train and transfer bookings are all taken care of. Your accommodations are thoughtfully chosen and reserved. Your guides will speak the local language, leaving you to speak and learn as little or as much of it as you’re motivated to. Want to eat where the locals eat? Your local small group tour guide can easily suggest dining options.

They move more quickly from one place to the next - fewer people, easier transport and in likely smaller vehicles. They can dine in more intimate spaces and stay in smaller hotels and inns. It’s easier to hear about where you’re visiting and have one-on-one conversations with your guide. Overall, if it’s a taste of local life and culture you’re seeking, a small group tour is the best choice.

Popular Small Group Tour Destinations

A small group tour of Italy will unveil all this and more, immersing you in local-level culture and cuisine.

3. Scotland

Only on a small group tour of Scotland will you have the opportunity to tour the majestic Royal Yacht Brittania in the early morning hours, before the crowds. These behind-the-scenes moments and privileged access are among the many perks of traveling with a small group in Europe .

Set out through the Scottish countryside with a learned host and gain a deeper understanding of what makes this extraordinary land tick. Visit Edinburgh Castle and the UNESCO World Heritage Old Town in the country’s capital. Venture to Loch Fyne and Inveraray Castle - you may recognize this setting from Downton Abbey!

Take a privately guided cruise on Loch Ness and take a gander at the perfectly picturesque Urquhart Castle, dating back to the 13th century. Your small group tour of Scotland will unlock the rugged beaches and cliffs, verdant countryside, ancient castles and renowned distilleries of this most endearing country, while immersing you in traditional Scottish cities, from Edinburgh to Glasgow.

4. Amsterdam

Amsterdam and its canals, markets and cultural highlights is a city best experienced on a well-thought-out small group journey. Let your expert Netherlands guide show you the way through this charming, 17th-century city, from the Anne Frank House to the Rijksmuseum, from a private tasting rooms in a 1679 distillery to its nearby windmill-laden countryside (for more on the Netherlands, see our Netherland travel guide ).

Only your local Amsterdam guide can take you behind the scenes in the world’s narrowest house or to her favorite “eetcafe” for local beer and delicacies. From Amsterdam, consider extending your tour to nearby Belgium and Germany, other top spots for small group travel.

Explore Greece, cradle of Western civilization, on a small group tour and be assured that you won’t have missed a thing. Between the fabled Samaria Gorge, traditional Cretan villages, sunsets on Santorini and the best historical sites of Athens , the best way to see Greece is by going small.

A comprehensive small group tour of Greece can be difficult to plan on one’s own - How to fit it all in? Islands ? Athens? Where to start? Thankfully, when you decide on a small group journey to ever-popular Greece, these questions have been answered for you and the logistics taken care of, so you don’t waste one precious moment.

So, sit back and experience the glory of Greece, from a private tour of the Acropolis and Agora to an off-hours visit to Delphi to a pre-arranged exclusive cooking class and meal with a local family.

Can You Go Off-the-Beaten-Path on a Small Group Tour?

Of course! And it’s encouraged. Small groups tours are designed to explore and discover new places in a way untouched by traditional large group tours.

Your guide is there to make sure the logistics are taken care of and that everyone gets to where they need to be … that being said, if you want to take it easy one morning and sit back in a cafe in Amsterdam and watch the world go by, they’ll not only agree to it, but suggest their favorite spot - and maybe even their favorite barista.

If your group has a particular interest that isn’t being fully met, simply look to your small group guide to change things up a bit. They’re generally flexible enough that a day’s itinerary can shift a bit to include that art gallery, farmers’ market or glassblowing studio you were all intrigued by. The flexibility and freedom afforded by a small group tour allows for less touristy sightseeing and more authentic world travel.

Things to Consider When Browsing Small Group Tours

A few things to think about when you are choosing a small group tour:

  • Look for the most all-inclusive small group tour you can find. That way, you can relax and enjoy your trip instead of worrying about additional fees for meals, admission prices, transfers, etc. If you are traveling solo on a small group tour, there are ways to avoid the single supplement. While it is true that some more upscale tour operators will charge a single supplement regardless, many will waive that fee if you are willing to room with another solo traveler.
  • Look at reviews from past travelers to ensure that you’re the right audience for this tour operator. If you’re hoping for a quieter, more intimate experience with lingering meals in tucked-away wine cellars, then you don’t want a small group tour aimed at families with young children. If you’re less physically capable, make sure to choose one that has plenty of options for activities, from easy to advanced. There are countless small group tour operators out there, so with a bit of advance research, you’re sure to find one right for you, whether it’s for older couples, younger people, photographers, birders, oenophiles or trekkers.
  • Inquire about your small group guides . When travelers reflect on their tours, particularly in Europe , it’s the operators who employ local, expert, passionate guides who are most favorably reviewed. Instead of acting as a babysitter, these knowledgeable individuals aim to take you where the larger tours don’t go, explain everything along the way in an effort to provide the most immersive experience possible and translate when necessary.
  • Look for balanced days . No one wants to be running pell-mell from one place to the next all day, being shuffled into vans and herded along like livestock. Good small group tour companies strike a proper balance between sightseeing and physical activity and off-hours, when you may either strike out on your own if you have the desire and energy, or just sit back, have a coffee and a pastry and watch local life go by. Use the "Mixed" Travel Style filter to see the most balanced small group tours  »
  • Ask about environmental impact . Ecotourism isn’t just another buzzword - it’s a real and growing trend that will make the world more accessible, for longer, for all of us. Small group tour operators often consider it their duty to thank the local community with a service project of some kind, whether you’re bringing in school supplies for local children or cleaning up the very trails upon which you will trod.
  • Consider group size . Think about how you picture a small group tour and what you’re comfortable with. Is this five people traveling together? Upwards of twenty? Around 10-12 is typical for a guided tour on the smaller side, a perfectly manageable size for transfers, dining together and accessing sightseeing attractions during off-peak hours.

Small Group Tours in Europe

From Greece to Iceland to Ireland and the Netherlands , Europe is a top destination for small group tours. With a language barrier to overcome, a bucket list of historic attractions as long as your arm and the opportunity to experience several different cultures in one trip, Europe is not only popular but can prove overwhelming.

There are no longer just two ways to experience Europe - either on a large tour bus with 60 of your (not) closest friends, or on your own, with hours of researching to get you there. Instead, take away the guesswork with a guided European vacation package , leaving the planning to a trusted professional.

No one has the expert, off-the-beaten path knowledge that your Europe tour guide will have - having been born and raised or at least having lived for years in the country you’re visiting. Perhaps they have a family friend who owns a winery in Tuscany, Italy , and can arrange a private tasting and tour. Or, maybe it means a tour of rarely visited castle ruins in Scotland , followed by a falconry demonstration.

You’ll see Europe at your pace on a small group tour - choose a guided vacation that encompasses one country or includes a whole region ( Scandinavia or the Greek Isles , say).

Everyone’s Europe is different - whether you’re there for the art, the history, the cuisine, the hiking, the skiing, the Northern Lights - so why settle once you’ve made it there? Go with a small group tour operator and the Europe you’ll find can be exactly the one you’ve been seeking.

Local Living Italy—Sorrento

Touring the coast was good. A little difficult to navigate if you are older or have some difficulty walking. The lemon farm was a little isolated and a bit of a walk to the road to catch a bus if you wanted to explore the area. The lemon farm had beautiful views. The rooms were nice but needs some upgrading and repairs in some areas. The breakfast was disappointing and some of the food was a little cold. We did not know that you needed to purchase wine from the farm. It was a little overpriced. The owners and staff were very nice people and our tour guide Anna was very nice. I think this tour is more for young people.

Small Group Tour of Sicily: Highlights (Maximum 8 Guests)

I would actually give it 4.5 stars as the hotels, meals and most of the guides were excellent. My suggestions are: Palermo is not a good place to end...very noisy, difficult city for the last day when most people are tired. The full day drive was also difficult, especially for the driver. We enjoyed a pre-tour visit to Catania and think this would be a good alternative. The guide in Agrigento did not understand English well enough to answer our questions. Please, too many churches! In general, tour guides focus on buildings, but social, political or cultural history is more interesting. If the Palermo leg were omitted, there would be time to visit Villa Romana del Casale.

Best of Italy Tour

Best of Italy

Guide was Lorenzo. He was charming and inclusive and socialised well with the group. He was helpful with luggage. We had one member of the group who always complained, right from the start and found fault with everything plus she was a heavy drinker. Lorenzo dealt well with a difficult situation. This person made the trip unpleasant for the rest of the group. No one wanted to share a room with her and listen to her whine and complain constantly. We all would have enjoyed the tour more if she had been removed from it. I did not always understand what Lorenzo said because of his accent and the Italian to English translation. A suggestion: that Lorenzo ensure all the group are present before giving detailed information and that he checks we all have understood what he said. If the information is complex, then a group text would be good. Was the tour what I expected? Yes and no. I expected more help with booking tours that were not included, which I didn't get. I appreciated the organised events and also the free time. The accommodation was excellent at La Spezia and Lucca. Hotel Stella was a disappointment. The range of activities was very good and the choice of places we visited. As the tour is so busy, it would be good if Intrepid did a sheet/email of options of what to see in each place ie in Lucca to see the house where Pucci was born etc. with them highlighted on a map and whether it's free or the cost. I know the tour was not a 'comfort' tour but it did demand a good level of fitness. I'm glad I was reasonably fit. Overall I enjoyed the option to see a lot of Italy in a few days and that the places and activities we did were so diverse. I enjoyed the small group and that, in the majority, we bonded well and had fun and a lot of laughs.

Trip was excellent from beginning to end. Excellent itinerary and accommodations. Guides were very friendly and knowledgeable. Massimo and Graziana are extraordinary with their communication and availability. A pleasure to deal with persons like these! Highly recommend!

Hiking in the Dolomites Tour

Hiking in the Dolomites

Great value for money. Good tour guide. Excellent travel company. Some days the hiking was a bit light. Would have given it 5 stars if the hiking was every day. Also tourradar/intrepid could also consider providing a higher cost tour where we stay at different refuges every day. This will reduce the transportation constraints and time and increase the Dolomites amazing experience.

Amalfi Coast Walking - Agriturismo

This tour was so fun! The walks/hikes along the Amalfi coast were absolutely beautiful. The accommodations were clean and comfortable and a nice place to return to after a day of hiking and sightseeing. As a single traveler, it’s always a little scary to join a group of people I don’t know but our group meshed well together and we parted as new friends. Our guide was also really good - he was friendly, organized and managed our expectations really well. I ‘d definitely recommend this trip to anyone looking for a beautiful outdoor adventure.

This was our first tour. It was very informative and the cities that were explored were both interesting and beautiful. Discover Matera and Taste of Salento Tour Tour

Discover Matera and Taste of Salento Tour

I traveled with my husband in December and booked this tour last minute. We were curious to visit Matera and spend a few days in a Masseria in Salento. The tour was beyond our expectations. The family atmosphere, hospitality and generosity of the people involved in the tour made us feel at home and part of that family. The food cooked by Emilio was delicious, he prepared a different dish for us every day. A big plus of the tour is the fact of letting yourself be guided by a local person to discover the picturesque villages, a different one every day. Matera, on the other hand, is a fairytale city, I now understand why it was chosen as a location for so many films! The cave room is amazing. Abundant tasting of wines and local products! A mention for the local guide of Matera, Mr. Cosimo, friendly and helpful and very knowledgeable! A tour that we highly recommend! Thanks to Omar from SoletoTravel for making everything so easy.

Taste of Salento-Authentic Culinary Experience Tour

Taste of Salento-Authentic Culinary Experience

Emilio, Clara, Michael and Antonio were fantastic hosts. The food and the sights visited were fantastic. However, a more protein driven menu would have been appreciated. The Casa Clarita was nice, but needed little attentions such as water in the fridge upon our arrival without asking and napkins. The mattresses would need updating and extra blankets. Being North Americans, it would help paying attention to safe driving. These are only constructive criticism, as we truly enjoyed our week on the farm and highly recommend this tour.

Reviews of Small Group tours to Italy

Carla was very kind and helpful on our tour
This tour was the very best experience we have ever had traveling overseas. The booking process was seamless and painless. We felt especially grateful that while the group was limited to 8 participants, it was guaranteed to proceed with 2 people. As it ended up, our trip was just me and my husband and we felt so fortunate to have had the attention of the guides in such a personal way. The guides were all tremendous and I am confident that a larger group would have felt equally tended to. Special thanks to our guides and drivers: Denise, Orazio, Roberto, Carlos, Fabio and Massimo. Part of what was truly evident was how passionate they each were about Sicily and how many of them had connections with people at the restaurants, local businesses and attractions that we went to. We felt like we were in such good hands during the time we were with all of the guides. Each tour and activity was enlightening and educational. The included lunches and other meals were top notch. The opening night walking food and wine tour was a great way to kickoff the trip. There were some others who joined us for that portion, and it was most welcome. I don't think it would have been as much fun for the restaurants and enoteca to have just 2 people and the guide show up, and we knew the rest of the trip we would have individual attention. We felt pampered with our lunches on the Mafia tour, at the winery on Etna, in Marzememi and Agrigento. There was never a feeling of penny-pinching, more plush and like what we would have chosen for ourselves! The selected hotels were excellent! Centrally located, each with a fantastic breakfast spread and fun bar/restaurants. We would happily go back to any of them again and recommend them. We loved the scheduling each day and felt like we had a great mix of free time to explore on our own. Lastly, Graziana was out lifeline while we were traveling. She connected with us daily to check in, and to share the next days plan and name of our guide and where they would meet us. She made dinner reservations for us while we were there and provided recommendations that were helpful. We didn't encounter any issues, but felt that we had a ready ally if needed. Massimo also checked in midtrip, so we truly felt like everyone was interested in us having the best possible trip. I cannot wait to return to Sicily. We have recommended Sicily Activities to many people since our return and would book again in a heartbeat.
mecol was great. went above and beyond

14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

all inclusive small group tours

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian Fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of their customers travel alone — including a whopping 85 percent of their female clients — the company has created its getaways with solo travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, annual holiday markets in Europe, or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Traveling alone? The company's solo tours provide private rooms and personalized experiences especially geared toward those traveling by themselves. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. We can book accommodations for additional nights on a space-availability basis. Hotel room charges will be added to your itinerary cost.

Upon request, we can arrange air tickets for clients who depart from the United States. However, we suggest that clients who depart from other countries should arrange their own flights for a lower air fare. If you are not sure how to set the schedules, we can provide the suggested schedules for you. If so, please contact us for this information. Depending on the airport and the country you will depart from, the air ticket may be cheaper if you fly to and from Tokyo only (round-trips instead of open-jaw flights). For this reason, we can also recommend that you book a separate flight with low-cost domestic airlines, such as Peach Air or Jetstar, to transfer to other cities within Japan.

The passports must have their expiration date at least six months beyond the date of return home. No visa is required for U.S., Canadian, UK and Australian citizens. If you are not a U.S., Canadian, UK and Australian citizen, you must contact the Japanese consulate for your specific entry requirements. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Our small groups guarantee Never more than 26 guests per tour

We always keep our tour group sizes small. That's because we want every guest to get the comfort, space and service they deserve. Although many other companies squeeze in groups of up to 50, even the largest of our tour packages are strictly limited to just 26 guests. That leaves empty seats on the coaches. So why do we limit our tours to such small group sizes? Here are six reasons.

Superior Service

Guests consistently list our small group sizes as a top reason why they would book with us again. See our reviews...

More focus on you

With a smaller group, our tour guides have more time to get to know you and your interests.

We deliberately leave empty seats on our coaches, so you can relax and spread out.

Experience each attraction up-close and personal, with more time to ask questions and see what interests you.

Speedier Check-Ins

Compared with many of our rivals, our smaller group sizes make checking in and out of the hotels a breeze.

More Relaxed Pace

Experience Ireland at your own pace. No rushing to keep up and no waiting around for large groups to assemble.

13 Best Affordable All-Inclusive Resorts for a Dreamy Vacation That Won’t Break the Bank

The cheapest all-inclusive vacations.

D reaming of a luxurious all-inclusive resort vacation but traveling on a budget ? As it turns out, your bucket-list trip may be well within your price range. All-inclusive family resorts , adults-only all-inclusive resorts and even the best all-inclusive resorts don’t necessarily come with a high price tag. Cheap all-inclusive resorts are definitely a thing.

With a baker’s dozen of options for you to choose from, it’s up to you to decide which types of affordable all-inclusive resorts make the most sense for you and your family. And once you’ve sorted out where you want to travel next, be sure to familiarize yourself with our all-inclusive resort tips  so you can get the most out of every joyous minute you’re staying there.

How we chose the best affordable all-inclusive resorts

We focused on resorts priced around $350 or less per night for two people. Our choices are based on expert recommendations, user reviews, star ratings and on-the-ground knowledge from within the all-inclusive travel industry. But price isn’t everything. For some of our picks, the value of the experience—whether that’s upgraded food, recently renovated rooms, more amenities or special focuses—gave it top billing over the cheapest all-inclusive hotel option.

Get Reader’s Digest ’s   Read Up newsletter for more travel, cleaning, humor, tech and fun facts all week long.

What are all-inclusive resorts, and why are they a good value?

The term all-inclusive resort typically means that the cost of your entire stay is covered at the price you paid when you booked the trip. Snacks, drinks, all meals, a daily program of activities, non-motorized water sports, pool and beach access and towel service—and of course, your room—are all factored into the total cost of your stay. Which is a big assist for budget-minded travelers who are keeping a close eye on their cash flow.

That said, there are always opportunities for upgrades that you will pay extra for, like a bottle of wine or spa treatments. So if you’re not sure if the price is included for something you’d like to try, be sure to ask before you book an activity.

How to get the best affordable all-inclusive resort deals

In my experience working for more than a decade in the travel industry, to get the best deal on a cheap all-inclusive vacation, the best time to book a hotel is early. Or alternatively, play chicken and see if you can score a last-minute deal. Because prices fluctuate based on demand times, prices for our selected properties might be higher during peak season (also known as high season). For instance, you will see a spike in all-inclusive resort rates as well as airfares during times when people are looking for warm winter getaways and during spring break.

On the other hand, prices below our max budget may be found during the off-season, where you might face a higher likelihood of inclement weather. While it may be tempting to snag the lowest rates of the year, remember to look at all the angles. Shoulder season is the sweet spot between pricier rates and the lower cost of the off-season.

Best for families

Iberostar selection bavaro suites, dominican republic.

If space is what you seek, look no further than the Iberostar Selection Bavaro Suites in the Caribbean . The property has its own Caribbean town, and the amenities are vast. Located on a Blue Flag beach in the Dominican Republic—which means the beach meets stringent environmental and safety criteria—the resort features a three-story fitness center, a golf course and eight dining options supplemented with eateries from two adjacent sister resorts.

This affordable all-inclusive resort allows you to book junior suites that connect or large family suites. Within those, there are sunken seating areas with convertible sleep spaces should you choose to keep the crew in just one room. You can ask for PlayStations when the sun’s just too much, despite the plentiful pools. Kids can experience activities like an on-site coral nursery or participate in Star Camp, which is broken out into three age groups between 4 and 17.

  • Wide selection of connecting suites and family suites
  • Use of multiple property amenities within the complex
  • Emphasis on environmental sustainability
  • Large property can be confusing to get around
  • Kids club not available for children under age 4

Best for multigenerational travel

The fives beach hotel & residences, mexico.

The best part about a multigenerational trip is having the whole family under one roof, with plenty of spaces to gather and opportunities to connect. At The Fives Beach Hotel & Residences in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, you can even have everyone under one roof—which is offered with the all-inclusive two- and three-bedroom penthouse resort residence. These bedrooms are connected via an entry hall and feature a full kitchen, a spacious dining room, a living room with a sectional, a jetted tub and ample seating on the rooftop deck. There’s no shortage of communal spaces throughout the resort either, with 10 restaurants, five bars and pool- and beachfront loungers at this AAA Four Diamond all-inclusive resort in Mexico .

  • Flexible room options
  • Plentiful communal spaces for making shared memories
  • Extraordinarily wide selection of specialty restaurants

Room choices may be confusing

Best for autistic guests

Beaches ocho rios, jamaica.

Traveling with autistic children can be challenging, but with some help and support, it’s far from impossible. This Jamaican property is part of the Beaches brand—the family arm of honeymoon favorite Sandals—which is the first resort company in the world to complete the rigorous training required to offer autism-friendly, fully staffed kids camps at no additional cost. It even hosts a tailored Autism All-Inclusive Week each year.

One of the cheapest all-inclusive resorts, it features sensory-friendly spaces, attention to dietary modifications, advanced autism-certification-holding water sports, a PADI scuba diving certification, a marine park and a kids’ camp. The optional one-on-one Beach Buddies program offers an even more tailored experience, and the Sesame Street partnership is universally beloved. Extra-large standard rooms provide space for a family to stretch out.

  • A certified autism center with an advanced designation
  • Great loyalty program for future discounts
  • Sesame Street partnership
  • Prices may run higher

Best for teens

Hard rock hotel riviera maya, mexico.

It can be hard to get a teen to buy into a family vacation —but not when you promise it’ll rock hard. That’s practically a guarantee at this large all-inclusive property in Mexico’s Riviera Maya. Rooms are spacious and decorated in warm, rich tones, but that’s not what makes it hot. Teens have access to some super-sweet amenities that will have them rethinking how cool a vacay with the ‘rents can be.

Dance contests, music quizzes, water balloon fights and paddle board lessons are all on their list of activities, and teens can play in the HyperX Gaming Lounge—which is fully equipped with Xboxes, Nintendo Switches, gaming PCs and a VR station—until midnight. Then there’s the Music Lab for serious bragging rights. This program lets kids and teens take part in a jam band, record a music session with a producer, star in a music video, borrow a real Fender guitar and more. But everyone’s a kid at the on-site Rockaway Bay Water Park.

  • Teen-friendly features, including a gaming lounge, music lab and water park
  • Mature and tween-geared amenities and programs
  • Diverse range of dining options for picky eaters
  • Can be at the top range of the budget

Best for couples

Royalton chic punta cana, dominican republic.

Modern, swanky and sexy, this newer adults-only offshoot of the Royalton resort brand is designed to keep things spicy. Stylish, ultra-contemporary suites with underlit DreamBeds are another spot to rest your eyes … or not. Included 24-hour room service lets you stay in bed or on your private balcony or terrace, but reservation-free dining at seven restaurants means date night during your romantic getaway is only steps away.

For the different love languages couples may share, fitness facilities, a spa and a casino let guests choose the way they want to make memories. But novelty acts like CHIC Angels—who appear without fail at the weekly foam party at the oversized pool—and a mermaid pool give couples something new to talk about at every turn. Any lulls in conversation and connection should be reserved for dozing off on the goldenrod sands of Uvero Alto.

  • Adults-only resort
  • Stylish, trendy and luxurious—great for reigniting a spark
  • Magnificent pool with ample seating in and around it
  • 24-hour room service included
  • Can be loud by the pool
  • Limited ocean views

Best for trips with friends

Hotel riu santa fe, mexico.

Whether you’re looking for a cheap all-inclusive resort for a bachelor or bachelorette party, birthday party or any kind of friends’ trip at all, Riu Santa Fe in Los Cabos is a recently renovated and highly happening resort in Mexico that’s perfect for groups. With room setups that include supersized king beds, twin extra-long beds and two double beds, plus by-request adjoining rooms for in-person wake-up calls and an enormous inventory of accommodations, there’s a configuration for every kind of friend group.

The hotel offers party-atmosphere events that vary by day … or night. During the daylight hours, expect jungle- and pink-themed parties at the adults-only pool, and if that’s not your idea of a good time, there are nine different pools to splash in on this property. Twice weekly, a DJ spins as live entertainers perform. What’s more, it’s one of the few Hotel Riu properties that allow spring breakers if you’re really looking to let loose.

  • Room setups that easily accommodate friend groups
  • Adults-only pool parties
  • On-site water park open six days a week
  • Like many Los Cabos beaches, this one is not swimmable
  • With 1,200 rooms, this is a very large property to navigate

Best for travelers with dietary restrictions

Grand palladium punta cana resort & spa, dominican republic.

Rather than a place for all you can eat, this resort is where anyone can eat. That’s thanks to an allergy-conscious program created with dietitians and strictly enforced by chefs and food-prep staff. Guests are asked to identify their food allergies at check-in and are issued a color-coded bilingual card that also gives them a cheat sheet for buffet selections and menu items at any a la carte restaurant.

Lovers of warm-water beaches will also enjoy access to the neighboring Grand Palladium Bavaro Resort & Spa and Grand Palladium Palace Resort & Spa, which means access to 13 bars and six beach bars throughout the complex. The resort also offers a sports center—or you can reserve one of four badminton, six hard-floor tennis, four paddleball or six pétanque courts. You can relax in the spacious, contemporary rooms, whose dimensions start at 376 square feet, or settle into your own personal hydro-massage bath.

  • Allergy-friendly dining
  • Global a la carte restaurant themes go beyond the expected
  • Kids will love the pool with a pirate ship
  • Additional charge for room service
  • Reservations are required for dining

Best for eco-friendliness

Bahia principe grand tulum, mexico.

Learning to appreciate different cultures and the world around us is one of the best parts of traveling, and it’s never too early to teach that lesson. This recently renovated eco-friendly resort offers a multitude of fun ways for children to discover that, from a kids’ club with 10 Mayan-themed play areas—including a zip line and a water park—to planned activities, such as archeological digs and stories about the ancient gods of the jungle.

The Eco Bahia program puts an environmental slant on its teachings and is part of Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts’ commitment to responsible travel. This focus has won the resort multiple awards for sustainability and social and environmental responsibility , which is even more impressive when you consider the breadth of what it offers: six restaurants, a buffet that has its own kids’ section, a teens’ club designed with input from actual teens and exchange privileges with free shuttle service every 10 minutes to nearby Bahia Principe Grand Coba.

  • Committed to ecological conservation through water, waste, energy and recycling programs
  • Meticulously maintained white-sand beach
  • Extensive kids services and attractions with an emphasis on local culture, history and the environment
  • Semiformal resort attire required for a la carte restaurants
  • Only one hour of non-motorized sports allowed daily

Best for a character-themed vacation

Nickelodeon punta cana, dominican republic.

Can’t get enough Nick Jr. or Nick at Nite throwbacks? The Nickelodeon hotel in Punta Cana is a fully immersive experience into the world of Nickelodeon, and the whole cast of characters is present and accounted for. The crew from PAW Patrol , Dora the Explorer , Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles , Fairly OddParents , SpongeBob SquarePants and all of their friends pop up daily, and scheduled “slime” dumps at the water park—for which admission is also included—are all part of any trip here. The rooms are also decorated with the channel’s style in mind, including splashes of that signature orange, but given the polish of contemporary luxury .

Novelty restaurants in the nine-restaurant Gourmet Village range from space-inspired dining to a gorgeous marketplace with cooking stations, proving that wanting a kid-at-heart, playful experience doesn’t have to come at the expense of grown-up taste.

  • Nickelodeon theme including kids’ favorite characters
  • No additional cost for character encounters
  • Certified Autism Center since 2018
  • Plentiful amenities for families with kids of all ages
  • Smaller rooms for the money
  • Need to walk to the water park

Best for entertainment

Grand oasis cancún, mexico.

The Grand Oasis Cancún is party central in the heart of Cancún’s all-inclusive haven, the Hotel Zone. It takes its cue from Las Vegas but adds plenty of Mexican spice for something really special. Bungee, tightropes, beach soccer and water slides also make fellow guests part of the entertainment.

At the open-air bar Zocalo, a DJ spins three times a week, and a live band and Mexican or Caribbean celebrations take place the other four. Multiple other venues take the spotlight once the sun sets: the Oasis Arena features concerts by international artists—and is known to host a boxing championship or two. Fire and drum shows take place at the Atrium theater, but for something more risqué, the Kinky Night Club, featuring burlesque, live music and sketch acts, draws in revelers. Then there’s the 24-hour casino, plus 13 restaurants to choose from. Or go for the extra-cost sensory gastronomy and specialty restaurant experiences if your favorite performance art is culinary.

  • Nonstop schedule of events for those who like to stay busy
  • Adults-only spaces, evening venues and entertainment
  • Can be loud and overstimulating
  • Several restaurants require additional cost

Best for active travelers

Platinum yucatán princess, mexico.

You’ll definitely get your daily steps in at the Platinum Yucatán Princess while exploring the grounds, visiting all 13 of its pools or hanging out at its two sister properties, Grand Riviera Princess and Grand Sunset Princess. They’re connected with walking trails, but you can get acquainted with them via a guided bike tour first. This resort has the usual gym, spa and shops for low-key activity, but its Activity Zone is appropriately named. That’s where organized activities, music and a weekly foam party take place. You can unleash your inner, past or present athlete at the Sports Park, which features batting cages, a putting green, ping-pong, mini billiards, an air rifle target range and more. Or head over to the tennis courts.

However you choose to spend your busy day, you don’t have to worry about planning ahead—reservations aren’t needed at the five included restaurants. Afterward, relax in spacious rooms with glossy, polished tile floors, a seating area and a furnished balcony or terrace. All are junior suites and fitted with cool, neutral decor, with pops of jewel tones in the trim.

  • Plenty of offerings for active travelers, especially at the Activity Zone
  • No reservations required for most a la carte restaurants
  • Access to two sister resorts
  • No beachfront views
  • Guests must be 18 or older

Best for spa lovers

Grand palladium palace resort & spa, dominican republic.

Part of the Grand Palladium resort complex on Bavaro Beach, this property is the one to choose if R&R is high on your priority list. While the services at Zentropia Palladium Spa & Wellness aren’t included, as is the case with most resorts and hotels, they’re all within steps of your room if you stay here. It’s considered one of the most extensive spas in the Dominican Republic, with a jetted tub, Turkish bath, vapor bath, sauna and an extensive service menu that includes hair treatments, waxes, manis and pedis, facial and body treatments, exfoliation and a full gamut of massage styles.

After or in between treatments, relax at any of this spa resort ‘s six pools. They’re all great, but we might recommend The Secret, an adults-only pool open until midnight. Looking to get some activity? Let the kids have their pirate ship (it’s a feature of one of the pools, as are water slides)—if you want to ramp things up yourself, just go to the well-equipped fitness center attached to the spa.

  • Elevated spa offering a wide variety of services
  • Exchange privileges with adjacent Grand Palladium Bavaro Suites Resort and Grand Palladium Punta Cana Resort & Spa
  • Adults-only The Secret pool
  • No reservations required for dining
  • Reservations are required

Best for golfers

Meliá caribe beach resort, dominican republic.

For those who find “free golf” the best value for their green, it’s hard to overlook the Melia Caribe Beach Resort , one of the best affordable all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana, which offers complimentary rounds with some stays—especially when it’s designed by six-time Spanish champ Jose “Pepe” Gancedo. The three nine-hole courses are interspersed with coconut trees and beautiful lakes.

The resort’s interiors are classically colonial with a timeless cream and dark wood scheme. All of these are steps from a prime location on Bavaro Beach—a short meander away, past 13 restaurants and through tropical gardens. There’s also the Splash Island Water Park, where the kids can play in the water as you do the same on the green. For even more to do, this resort offers a complimentary shuttle to the theme park Katmandu Park and sells tickets to the attraction right on site.

  • Golf is listed among the resort’s inclusions for select stays
  • Wide selection of restaurants
  • Complimentary shuttle to Katmandu Park
  • Golf cart rental not included
  • Need to rent golf clubs at an additional cost or pack your own

Looking for a sweet treat? An adorable ice cream and churro shop is just a skip away from one of the resort’s nine pools, each offering its own unique ambiance, from a tranquil oasis for the adults to a lively hub for the whole family.   For a taste of Mexico’s rich viticulture, parents can embark on a guided journey with a sommelier, accompanied by delectable hors d’oeuvres inspired by the country’s renowned wine regions. And for a lazier day, 16 treatment rooms and hydro massage therapy await amidst the lush tropical forest. Hilton Cancun, An All-Inclusive Resort

Nestled between Cancun and the quiet fishing village of Puerto Morelos, set on a secluded stretch of Mayan Coastline, the Hilton Cancun offers a quieter escape for families. The all-inclusive resort, which first opened in November 2021, features 715 stylish guest rooms – all offering panoramic views of nature and the ocean, including the resort’s sought-after Swim-Up Poolside rooms, featuring a pool connected directly to the patio.  The headlining feature of Hilton Cancun, however, is their wide range of culinary experiences. Just next door to the resort, the unique spa blends innovative treatments with holistic Mayan traditions. The spa offers 21 treatment rooms, both inside and outside, that incorporate fresh garden herbs, locally sourced oils, and healing crystals.

Hilton La Romana, An All-Inclusive Resort

You also can’t go wrong with the white sand and blue water of Hilton La Romana, An All-Inclusive Resort in the Dominican Republic, which boasts both family-friendly and adults-only resorts depending on what type of vacation you’re looking for.   For families, the best option for lodging is the all-Inclusive Family Resort nestled in the lush jungles, gorgeous weather and expansive beaches of the island. The resort’s headlining perks come with their family-friendly daily offerings, including a water park features winding tube slides, a palm tree-lined lazy river, and a kids’ splash zone; free kayaking, snorkeling, and windsurfing sessions; and supervised activities at their kids/teens clubs, such as  treasure hunts, sandcastle building, beach camping, foam parties, bonfires and a gaming room.  And if you enjoyed your stay and want to go back without the kiddos?
