2000 Excursion - Door lock issues
- Add to quote
Hi! I am going to try to explain this issue the best that I can. The truck has had issues with the door locks since we purchased it used in 2011. We recently replaced all of the door lock actuators. Recently we have noticed an issue with the truck barely starting or the batteries running dead, even though they are fairly new. In the last few days, the door locks are now "stuck" down and cannot be pulled up, like something is pulling them down. The drivers door will unlock with a key. Thought it might be the relay, but that has tested good. We are assuming that this issue is what is draining the battery, but not 100% sure. Fuses appear to be good. Any ideas?
What happens when you use the door switch to try to unlock the doors? It sounds like something is driving the "down" which could be draining the batteries. You could try removing the fuse that feeds the locks to see how your batteries hold up with it out.

2000 Excursion electric door locks
- Add to quote
I purchased a 2000 Excursion one month ago. I have replaced all 5 locking mechanisms (4 doors and hatch) which were all out when I bought it. They would not lock or unlock with the electric lock button or remote...all manual. Within one week, one went out. Then a second another week later. Just today, another went out. I have checked the 4 contacts that are under the dash in the center just behind the firewall and those are fine. I have no idea at this point but to find out something on these forums or take it into the dealer. My brother also owns the same 2000 Excursion with the same problem and has also replaced the actuators. I can only assume at this point that there is a defect since we both have the exact same problem and have serviced it the same way so far. Anyone with any suggestions as to what is next?
I have the same problem with my Excursion. I took it to the Ford dealer and they say it is the actuators. They want nearly $700 to fix it.!!!
Actuators are known to fail on that model.
there is a fix for the actuators where you eliminate a resistor, seems easy to do. I only have one not working-- the rear one, and I am going to try the fix this week or next. If it works I will post the details.
I had a similar situation and found it simpler and more cost effective to replace all stock actuators with aftermarket ones. (around 12-15 each) Works like a charm and haven't had to replace any of them since I put them in over a year ago.
my dad has a 2003 6.0 powerstroke diesel excursion. and he just replaced that.
I own a '00 7.3 4wd and I had the same problem in 05, we took it to the dealer and they replaced both front acuators and I ain't had a problem since. Good Luck

2001 Expedition power lock problem
- Add to quote
My 2001 Expedition door locks will lock but not unlock . I checked the wiring with a meter . No power gets to the actuators when you press unlock using buttons remote our door pad . Only the drivers door will unlock . Someone suggested the central security module . Any advice would be greatly appreciated .
The Unlock relay is most likely bad. It's in the Relay box is located behind right side of I/P.
Attachments
I replaced the module under the dash that has the factory keypad code printed on it . I can now unlock and lock all doors with remote after programming but keypad doesn't work . I was told you have to take it to ford to have the module programmed . Does anyone know if you can program it any other way .
- 1. Enter the factory set code.
- 2. Within five seconds press the 1 2 on the keypad.
- 3. Enter your personal 5-digit code. Each number must be entered within five seconds of each other.
- 4. Press 1 2, 3 4 or 5 6 to indicate which of the three personal entry code positions you wish to use.
- 5. The doors will again lock then unlock to confirm that your personal key code has been programmed to the module.
- Do not set a code that uses five of the same number.
- Do not use five numbers in sequential order.
- The factory set code will work even if you have set your own personal code.
- If you program a code to a position that already contains a set code, the previously-set code will be erased.
The keypad doesn't work at all . Pressing 7/8 9/0 doesn't lock the doors . The lights do come on when you push a button but that's it . I was told the module has to be reset somehow to work . I called a Ford dealer . They said $99.95 to reset .
A reset won't help the keypad if some of the buttons don't work......the keypad must be bad.
The keypad worked with the other module . It needs to be reset or programed before the keypad will work with the new module . I wonder if maybe a locksmith could do it cheaper than a Ford dealer ?
Talked to a locksmith today . Hooked up his computer to the expedition . It said keypad inactive , and can only be programmed by Ford . If anyone else has this issue , now you know . Thanks Everyone
Wow I didnt think that a keypad had to be programmed, looks like you will have to pay Ford.

Seeing that I have not come across a similar problem in the forums on the 3rd gen expedition. I wanted to post it here and get any ideas from the members. Last week my driver side door lock quite working, then worked once or twice randomly then died. I immediately thought actuator. Bought OEM and replaced. Still nothing. Tested power to the switch. 10V. OK. Tested continuity of the switch between the points. OK. Tested power at the actuator. Nothing. Checked it back to the main connector block in the door. Nothing. Checked the harness at the door hinge. No visible issues. After many hours of frustration with no resources to look at, I traced the wiring to the fuse box in the passenger side footwell. The book labels a fuse for lock/unlock relay. Checked the fuse. OK. Pulled the fuse and the locks still seem to operate... not sure whats going on here. Put the fuse back and next locate these refrenced relays. Audible checks lead me back to that fuse box. Relays are clicking inside. Pulled it and split the box. Nothing but circuit boards inside... now if I was an electronics guru I would pull it apart further and solder in a new relay. My only guess at this point is the contacts for the Driver side door circuit are fried and I now need to replace the whole fuse box assembly. I will price one out through Ford and also see if a wrecker has a 3rd gen that may work. Any further suggestions? 2017 Ford Expedition Limited EL

I have the same problem and I replaced the actuator and it did not fix it. If you replace the whole fuse box assembly will that require some programming to make it work?
Well-Known Member
Probably a dumb question ... but you get same results from all three ways to actuate electronic door lock? key fob, switch on door armrest, keypad on door exterior? and all other doors operate normally with those methods? and physical key works? 10V sounds odd, although I don't know circuit. should be same as battery voltage shouldn't it?

Yupster Dog, So this new style does all the actuating through the fuse box AKA the body control module. No physical relay to replace or switch around like what is found on the older style expi's. I was unable to locate a good schematic to further troubleshoot and took it into Ford. I guess they found a broken wire going from the body control module to that actuator. Somewhere up in the firewall, guess it took some ripping and tearing apart of panels etc to get to!! So for now issues resolved. And for a response to Mr.Sticker I don't believe in dumb questions, its actually the right one. Start with the simple checks. Short answer is yes, I did try all functions you mentioned with the same result. Always a good reminder to start with simple checks. And Robin Adams. From what ford explained to me the Fuse Box AKA body control module has to be replaced as a unit and even programmed to your vehicle parameters to function properly.

Ford Expedition Door Won’t Open: Solutions for Inside or Outside Issues
In this guide, we will explore potential causes and solutions for a Ford Expedition door that refuses to open, whether from the inside, outside, or both.
The troubleshooting steps will depend on whether one or both handles are functioning .
Faulty mechanisms, damaged components, or normal wear and tear can all contribute to a door that won’t open.
The factors at play may vary based on whether the issue is occurring internally or externally, or both.
Door Won’t Open from the Inside Only: Causes
Several common issues could lead to the interior door handles of a Ford Expedition failing to respond. We’ll address the most prevalent ones below.
Child Safety Lock
Modern vehicles include a child safety lock mechanism to prevent accidental door opening. The safety lock is typically positioned near or on the interior door handle and may require pressure to deactivate it.
Start by checking the child safety lock.
Worn or Faulty Inner Door Handle
Worn or broken door handles are a common reason why your vehicle’s doors won’t open from the inside.
Over time, frequent use or mishandling can cause wear and tear or damage to the interior door handle.
When this happens, replacing the door handle might be necessary to ensure the proper functionality of your Expedition’s door.
Lock Actuator
Faulty door lock actuators can also result in the door not opening from the inside.
A door lock actuator is a small motor responsible for electronically locking or unlocking the door. Malfunctions could cause the door to remain locked even when the interior handle is pulled.
In this scenario, inspecting and potentially replacing the door lock actuator is necessary to resolve the issue.
While attempting to open the door, manually pull the door lock to the unlock position. If the door opens with the added pressure, it’s an indication that the door lock mechanism or power lock might be failing.
Faulty Door Handle Cable
An additional possible cause for a Ford Expedition’s door not opening from the inside is a damaged or disconnected linkage connecting the interior door handle to the latch mechanism.
The linkage consists of rods and clips that enable the door to open when the handle is engaged.
If any part of this linkage is damaged or disconnected, the door will remain shut from the inside. A comprehensive inspection of the linkage components, along with reattachment or replacement of damaged parts, is essential.
Door Lock Mechanism
A malfunctioning door lock mechanism can also hinder the Expedition’s interior door from opening.
The door lock mechanism encompasses the latch, lock cylinder, and other internal components that secure the door when locked.
Faults in any of these components could impede proper door functionality, preventing it from opening from the inside.
Door Won’t Open from the Outside Only: Causes
An issue occasionally encountered with the Ford Expedition is the inability to open the door from the outside, while it remains functional from the inside.
Various reasons could contribute to this problem, and understanding these causes can help diagnose and resolve it effectively.
Exterior Door Handle Issues
Over time and through frequent use, the exterior door handle of the Expedition can become worn out or damaged. This wear can result in improper engagement with the door latch mechanism, preventing the door from opening.
In such cases, replacing the door handle is advisable. The handle might feel lighter or may pull higher compared to the other exterior door handles.
Faulty Door Latch Assembly
The door latch assembly of your Ford Expedition is responsible for securely holding the door closed and releasing it when the handle is pulled.
If the latch assembly malfunctions or is damaged, it might fail to release the door when the exterior handle is activated. This issue can usually be resolved by replacing the faulty latch assembly.
Linkage Issues
The exterior door handle is connected to the latch assembly via a series of rods or cables referred to as the linkage.
If any of these components become disconnected or misaligned, the door handle won’t function properly from the outside. Inspecting the linkage and making necessary adjustments can rectify this problem.
Frozen or Jammed Lock
In colder climates or specific conditions, the door lock mechanism of your Expedition can freeze or become jammed, preventing the door from opening even when using the exterior handle.
Applying a de-icing agent or penetrating oil can help alleviate the lock’s condition and allow the door to open.
General Door Repair Instructions
The following are general instructions for repairing doors. Keep in mind that the assembly of the door panel can vary based on the model year of your Expedition. We recommend searching on YouTube for your specific model year and watching videos for detailed guidance. This can save you considerable time and effort.
Identifying the Problem
When dealing with a Ford Expedition door that won’t open, it’s crucial to identify the underlying cause. Unfortunately, gaining access to the linkage might require removing the door panel.
Pay attention to any unusual noises while operating the door and inspect the lock and handle for signs of wear or damage.
Disassembling the Door Panel
Prior to making repairs, you need to disassemble the door panel of your Ford Expedition. Begin by removing the screws that secure the armrest and handle.
Next, gently pry the door panel away from the door frame using a flathead screwdriver or a panel removal tool.
Exercise caution to avoid damaging the panel’s clips, the paint on the door jam, or upholstery. Once the panel is detached from the frame, disconnect any electrical connectors and set the panel aside.
Repairing the Fault
Based on the identified issue, proceed with the appropriate repair:
- Broken door handle: Replace the door handle by unscrewing the mounting bolts, carefully removing the old handle, and attaching a new one.
- Faulty lock mechanism: Inspect the lock for damage or misalignment and repair or replace the necessary components.
- Damaged internal door parts: Examine all internal components (such as the door latch, rods, and levers) and replace any damaged parts.
Reassembling the Door Panel
After completing the repair, reassemble the door panel of your Ford Expedition using these steps:
- Reconnect any electrical connectors that were disconnected earlier.
- Align the clips on the door panel with the holes in the door frame, then gently push the panel into place.
- Reattach the screws to secure the armrest and handle.
- Test the door’s functionality to ensure everything is working correctly.
By following these general door repair instructions, Ford Expedition owners can address a door that won’t open and enjoy a properly-functioning door once again.
Tips and Tricks to Handle a Stuck Door
Occasionally, Ford Expedition owners may encounter a situation where their door won’t open. In such cases, it’s important to be familiar with several tips and tricks to effectively address a stuck door. Here are a few approaches that can help resolve this issue.
1. Apply Lubricant : One of the most common causes of a stuck door is rust or debris accumulation on the door latches, hinges, or locking mechanisms.
Applying an appropriate lubricant, such as WD-40, can help loosen the rust and free up the door. Spray the lubricant on the affected areas and attempt to gently open the door after waiting a few minutes.
2. Check the Door Lock : Sometimes, the issue may not lie with the door itself but with the locking mechanism. Inspect the key fob and the manual door lock to ensure they are functioning properly. If needed, replace the key fob’s battery or repair the manual lock.
3. Assess the Door Alignment : Misaligned doors can lead to difficulties in opening. Examine the alignment of the door and ensure that the gap between the door and the vehicle body is even. If the door appears misaligned, adjusting the hinges may rectify the problem.
4. Use a Slim Jim Tool : A Slim Jim tool can help disengage the locking mechanism from the inside. Carefully insert the tool between the door frame and the window, then gently manipulate it until you hook onto the lock linkage. Once you’ve located the lock linkage, pull the Slim Jim upward to disengage it.
5. Consult a Professional : If all else fails, it’s advisable to take your vehicle to a reputable mechanic or dealership. They can diagnose and address the issue using the appropriate tools and expertise, ensuring that the problem is resolved and the door opens smoothly.
