Looking for plans here are 55 fun things to do with friends at home or out on the town.

Sarah Regan

Sometimes there's nothing better than kicking back with a friend and simply hanging out—but other times, you want something to  do . If you've grown tired of the same old coffee dates or happy hour drinks, we rounded up 55 things you can do with your friends—at home, in town, out in nature, and more.

After all, our  adult friendships  are an invaluable part of our support system and overall well-being— research shows this 1 —and when we make time to intentionally do activities together, it brings us closer.

As psychotherapist  Annette Nuñez, Ph.D., LMFT , tells mindbodygreen, "It's really important to keep social connections strong because your friends become your support system—in a sense, they're the family that you choose."

So the next time you're looking for some things to do with friends, here's a foolproof list of options, from both Nuñez and licensed therapist  De-Andrea Blaylock-Solar, MSW, LCSW-S, CST .

Things to do with friends at home:

Host a cooking party.

Planning a cooking party will not only give you and your friends a chance to try out a new recipe, but you can then share the meal together with your favorite dinner playlist going (and maybe a well-paired bottle of wine for the table).

Have a music release listening night

Is one of your favorite bands putting out a new album? Invite your friends over for a listening party! You can keep it casual, or make it a whole night complete with album-inspired outfits, cocktails, and snacks.

Have a movie/show watch party

Similar to the option above, you can have a watch party for a new movie or show coming out. This is a great option for two friends who want a chill night in, or in the case of a big blockbuster, you can use it as an excuse to invite a group over for the ultimate viewing party.

DIY cocktail night/happy hour

Who needs egregiously expensive cocktails on the town when you can have a DIY cocktail  or mocktail night at home with your closest friends? Everyone can bring their favorite cocktail recipe and take turns showcasing their signature drink.

At-home brunch

For the besties who love to brunch, consider bringing the brunch vibes home for a cozy weekend morning with your friends. You can do a build-your-own-bagel spread, fire up your waffle maker, or even try your hand at a quiche—the options are endless!

Enjoy a luxurious spa day

With all the amazing at-home skincare and beauty products available today, anyone can bring have a luxurious spa day. Call up your pals and have everyone bring one thing to pamper each other with. Think face masks, hair masks, lots of nail polishes...anyone have a cold plunge tub?

Work on a craft project together

Are you and your friends DIYers? Find a craft project you'd like to try yourself and get your friends on board! You can start by heading to the craft store together, then bringing your new supplies back home for an afternoon of creative fun.

Start a book club

If your group of friends are all voracious readers, why not start a book club ? Vote on a book you'd all like to read and set the date! Come up with discussion sessions and treat it like a potluck with snacks or dinner, and drinks to go around.

Have a game night

A great option for two friends or a group, who doesn't love an evening of games? Whether you're into board games, video games, lawn games, or all of the above, everyone deserves an opportunity to let loose and have a little fun.

Throw a themed party

One of the best things to do with friends is to simply invite everyone over for a house party—and a theme always makes things more interesting. Whether you go for a classic theme like the 70's or a murder mystery, or something more out there, fun is sure to be had.

Do a clothing swap

Clothing swaps are never a bad idea. Odds are, you and your friends all have some clothes in your closet you could offload, and getting together to make swaps is a great way to get rid of what you don't want. You could walk away with a few new pieces as well, and anything leftover can be donated.

Have a candle-making night

There's something so satisfying about burning a homemade candle , so call up your friends and make a day of it! You'd be amazed how simple it is to make candles yourself, and you can completely customize them with your preferred scents, fun shapes, or even little wax designs.

Things to do with friends out on the town:

Get dinner somewhere unique.

Going out to dinner is friendship staple for a reason. You can converse over good food, wear your best outfits, and catch up on what's new in each other's lives. To make things more interesting, go to a restaurant you've never been to—or at least try something you've never had!

Go grocery shopping together

Look, sometimes the most mundane tasks are made fun and exciting when a friend is along for the ride. If you know your pal is looking for plans, ask them if they'd like to accompany you to the store? Who knows—once you're done shopping, the day may take you on another adventure.

Check out a gallery opening

Even if you don't have an official art museum where you live, there are plenty of small, local galleries to be found with local artists' latest works. Search online for upcoming openings near you and call up your most avant-garde friends.

Visit a farmers market

Farmers markets  are a great way to simultaneously support local farms, get your hands on some tasty local produce, and spend time with your friends. When you're done shopping, try to come up with a meal you can make together with all your fresh ingredients!

Attend a workout class together

If you've got friends who are obsessed with hot yoga, barre, HIIT, or anything of that nature, they will be thrilled if you ask to tag along. Better yet, see if you can find a class neither of you have tried before!

Go to a museum

Museums are a great way to learn something new and foster good conversation. If any of your friends are into history, science, etc., don't miss out on your closest museums for a day of educational fun.

Visit your nearest botanical gardens

Speaking of museums, many cities also have botanical gardens with a variety of plant species, which is a fun way to learn about plant life up close—plus admission is typically pretty affordable too, which never hurts.

See some live music

What could be more fun than dancing with your friends to some good live music? Check out the concerts coming up near you, and don't be afraid to take a drive to see a bigger artist—or get into your local music scene at nearby venues.

Visit an adult arcade or escape room

From mini-golf to the pinball machine, arcades offer a dose of childhood fun that we could all use once in a while. Get a group together and hit your local arcade, or see if there's an escape room near you for even higher stakes.

Take a cooking class together

Another win-win activity to do with friends? Taking a cooking class together. You'll learn how to make some amazing recipes—and get to enjoy eating them, too.

Try a paint-and-sip class

If a cooking class isn't up your alley, maybe a paint and sip will be! These events are a great, low-pressure way to tap into your more creative sides—and if you like your paintings enough, you can hang them up at home later.

Go to a comedy show

Want a night of drinks and laughter? Go to your local comedy club, or see if there are any open-mic comedy nights near you. Bonus points if you go to an open-mic and everyone performs a bit.

Visit a nearby historical site

Depending on where you live, you'd be surprised what historical sites are just a stone's throw away. Hit up your favorite history-buff and ask if they want to go check it out!

See a movie at a drive-in theater

Switch up your usual movie theater night by finding your closest drive-in and enjoying an outdoor movie. It's a classic American past time, and some drive-ins often show throwback movies if you want to check out an old classic.

See a play or musical

From big Broadway shows to local theatre company originals, consider having an evening with arts by seeing a play or musical. Everyone can wear their fanciest theatre attire, grab a cocktail beforehand, and enjoy the show.

Whether you rent a karaoke machine for the night if you're too shy to do it in public, or go all-out at your nearest karaoke bar, you and your friends can let your goofy sides out, serenade each other, or bring the house down.

Things to do with friends outdoors and in nature:

Go for a hike.

Any nature lovers out there? Going for a hike on a nearby trail is a great way to take in some nature and give you time to connect with your friends outside of the hustle and bustle of everyday life. (Easy walking trails are an option too!)

Take a walk in the park

Speaking of easy walking, nothing beats a stroll in the park with a dear friend. This is a great option if you both have busy schedules, as it can be as short or long as you like.

Walk your dogs together

Humans love to socialize, and so do dogs! And honestly, what sounds better than a puppy play date? Whether you take a walk with one friend or a group, you can all enjoy watching your dogs have a good time together.

Join a sports league

From softball to kickball, your town probably has some intramural sports leagues—maybe even multiple! Find out which leagues near you have openings and get a team together! It might just become the highlight of your week.

Go to the beach

Pack up the cooler, refine your beach playlist, and don't forget your sunscreen! There's nothing like laying on the beach on a nice summer's day, and having your pals by your side makes it that much sunnier.

Take a bike ride

Want to take in more of your city in less time? Map your ideal route around town and go for a bike ride with a friend or two. Even if you don't have bikes, you could borrow a friend's or see if your city has a local bike-share program.

Have a picnic

Find a picturesque spot near you, pack up your favorite picnic dishes, and take a trip out for the day with your closest friends. Don't forget a portable speaker, sunscreen, and some fizzy drinks!

Go kayaking or paddle boarding

Getting out on the water is an instant recipe for serenity—and an arm workout! Grab kayaks or a canoe (or rent them if you don't have any) and take a leisurely row down your nearest creek or river.

Go rock climbing

For the adventurous friends in the bunch, find your nearest rock climbing gym (or outdoor rock wall) and give it a go. Belaying each other can even foster a sense of connection and trust.

Fishing can be relaxing (and momentarily exciting when you actually catch one), plus you'll have plenty of time to chat with your friends while you hang out on the water. Bonus points if you go home and make dinner with your catch!

Have a bonfire

Nothing says "summer night" like a crackling bonfire and s'mores making their rounds. As the crickets harmonize with your soft, fireside conversation, you won't even mind that your hair smells like smoke.

Things to do with friends to deepen your friendship:

Do a journaling session together.

Who says you have to journal all by yourself? For the more pensive, reflective friendships, consider having a journaling night where you each reflect on a handful of questions and prompts. Want to get deep? Feel free to share what you wrote.

Attend a personal growth workshop or retreat

Are you and your friends really into yoga? Perhaps inner child work or even meditation? See what upcoming workshops and retreats are being held near you and book your spots! You'll grow individually, and as friends.

Take a mini road trip

Depending on where you live, there's got to be at least one semi-far off destination you've been wanting to check out. Maybe it's the new buzzworthy restaurant in a town an hour away, or an exhibit 45 minutes out. Call up your friends and make a day of it!

Do a tarot reading

Any mystical folks out there? For an evening of reflection, get your friends together for a group  tarot reading . Everyone can bring their own deck, so you can pass them all around and pull lots of different cards throughout the night.

Go to a religious or spiritual service together

If you really want to feel closer to a friend, you'll need to go a little deeper. And let's be real—religious or spiritual services are deep. You can reflect on what's discussed during the service afterwards, and maybe even learn something new about each other.

Volunteer together

Are the you and your friends big environmentalists? Or perhaps you've bonded over being vegan? Find a local charity you can both get behind and commit the day to furthering the cause together.

Make vision boards

Vision boards are a great way to manifest what you want by curating images that help inspire you. And when you make them with friends, it feels that much more inspiring! Think of this like a manifesting craft night, with everyone bringing supplies like old magazines, poster board, etc.

Hold a moon circle

From the new moon to the full moon,  moon circles are a great way to tap into the energy of the current moon cycle, reflect on what's going on in your life, and connect with your closest friends.

Try a group meditation or breathwork

As meditation and breathwork gain popularity across the West, many spiritual centers, and even yoga studios, have started offering meditation and breathwork classes in-house. Find one coming up near you and get a group together to try it out.

Nothing will bring you closer to your friends like spending a couple nights in the woods! Once you're out there, the rest is up to you, whether you plan a weekend full of hikes, kayaking, and lake swimming, or just post up next to the water and lounge in your hammocks.

Take turns asking each other questions

Remember back in the day when you would play 20-questions? Let's bring that back! If you really want to get to know your friends, simply ask them some thoughtful questions . Everyone can take turns asking versus sharing, and you're sure to learn something new about each other.

Games to play with friends

Frisbee golf.

Any frisbee fans out there? Frisbee golf is a great way to get out into nature, get some steps in, and make great conversation with your friends along the course.

Two truths and a lie

Who doesn't love a good questions game? For your next game night, have friends share their "two truths and a lie," and test how well you really know your besties.

Truth or dare

You knew this was coming: it's simply not a game night if there isn't at least one round of truth or dare! Depending on how comfortable you are with the friends in question, you can make this as tame or raunchy as you want.

For a game night sure to have everyone howling with laughter, charades is always a safe bet. Split up into teams and battle it out to find out which of your friends makes the best mime.

"Never have I ever"

And of course, for another game that's equally as fun as it is revealing, play a few rounds of "Never have I ever." For an extra fun twist, have everyone take a drink whenever they haven't done something.

The takeaway

From picnics in the park, to visiting local museums, or of course, staying in for a movie night, it's not about what you're doing—but the company you're with.

Still, it never hurts to have options, and one of these is sure to provide a great time with  great friends .

Best trips with friends on the weekend and in the world

But before you decide on a destination, be sure to keep the personalities and preferences of your friends top of mind. Some friends are awesome to lay on a beach with, but not so great for trekking through the jungle or road tripping through Europe.

My top tip: Embrace the personalities and preferences of who you’re traveling with, and let it guide your destination.

15 FUN Places to go with friends on the weekend

I highly recommend OFTEN taking fun trips with friends near where you live. Short and sweet trips are a great way to “test the waters” of traveling with friends without putting too much stress on a relationship. Especially if your travel styles are quite different.

Here are awesome places to go with friends on the weekend, including ideas across the US and Canada.

with tour friends

1. HOUSEBOATING near you

My very first BIG trip with friends was a houseboating weekend in beautiful British Columbia. It was perfect!

We soaked in the hot tub and slid down the waterslide when we got too hot. Ate way too much ice cream. Met some cuties. And we even crashed. Yup, we did. There’s nothing like a little drama to pull you together! (Make sure you get insurance, ‘cause those boats are harder to steer than they look!)

Find the nearest pretty lake country near you, book a car and make it happen. It’s like camping but with a waterslide.

2. Fun LOS ANGELES weekend getaway for girls

Crossroads sign of Via Rodeo and Rodeo Drive, Los Angeles

A girls trip to LA is pretty classic. Strut your stuff like Pretty Woman on Rodeo Drive. Hit up the star-prone restaurants. And time it with the Oscars to experience the red carpet. It’s possibly THE most epic place to travel with friends on the weekend.

Or, if you’re not into the Hollywood mayhem, stay on beautiful Santa Monica Beach. Cycle The Strand bike path along the waterfront. Ride the ferris wheel on the pier. And people-watch while enjoying incredible beachfront restaurants.

Where to stay with friends in Los Angeles:

  • Casa Del Mar resort and spa (Santa Monica): Right on Santa Monica Beach, with an outdoor pool, restaurants and live music on Sundays. Every room has a hydrotherapy spa tub and floor-to-ceiling windows, some with an ocean view.
  • Beverly Wilshire (Beverly Hills): As close as you can get to Rodeo Drive, overlooking Rodeo Drive and the Via Rodeo fountain and steps. An epic place for a trip with friends to explore Rodeo Drive’s boutique shops and cafes.
  • SIXTY Beverly Hills (Beverly Hills): Five blocks from Rodeo Drive along Wilshire Blvd, with a pretty rooftop pool and bar.

3. FLORIDA KEYS road trips with friends

Drinks in Florida Keys, places to stop on drive to Key West from Miami Florida

A road trip from Miami to the tip of the Florida Keys is the perfect mix of beach and culture. It’s only about 3.5 hours, with plenty of time to stop along the way.

If you’re not from Miami, spend a day exploring its museums, Bayside Marketplace at the waterfront, or cultural neighborhoods like Little Havana.

Then, rent a car and head out to Key West. Along the way, stop to play with dolphins, feel the sand between your toes, and eat and drink with a view. Want more adventure? Where better to go skydiving with the girls than in Key West?!

4. NEW ORLEANS weekend getaway with friends

with tour friends

Visiting the plantations in Louisiana would certainly make for a memorable travel experience with friends in the USA. Stay in a former plantation mansion, the elegant Nottoway Plantation that dates back to the 1850s. It’s the south’s largest antebellum mansion, located right on the Mississippi River. It features antiques and fireplaces in the rooms. Plus, an outdoor pool, hot tub, onsite dining and self-guided tours.

Plantations to visit near New Orleans, Louisiana:

  • Oak Alley Plantation : Known for the stunning Oak-lined path entrance to this sugarcane plantation. Features tours of the “big house” (with a pretty wrap-around upper balcony), slave cabins, expansive garden and exhibits.
  • Whitney Plantation : Famous for its ground-breaking slavery museum, with restored buildings and educational guided tours.
  • Destrehan Plantation : Established in 1787, this sugar plantation was the site of one of the three trials following the 1811 Slave Revolt. Features interpretive tours, exhibits and pretty grounds.

5. Fun trips with friends to NEW YORK CITY

with tour friends

New York City can be anything you and your friends want it to be.

Times Square and Fifth Avenue are perfect for high-end shopping, flashing lights and nightlife. Its museums, Broadway theater and The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts are epic for the culturalists. Foodies will love exploring Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn. And for those who love relaxation, Central Park, Staten Island and Brooklyn waterfront promise amazing views. I’d argue that NYC is one of the BEST places to travel with friends.

On my trip with friends to NYC, we stayed in a boutique hotel in the Upper West Side . Within a block, we had a small pastry shop, grocery store and plenty of cute cafes. We could easily walk to Central Park and Riverside Park (perfect for a You’ve Got Mail walking tour). And since we were surrounded by residential streets, I got to meet so many dogs out for their walk! Plus, easy subway access to everything else.

Find your perfect place to stay in Manhattan , Brooklyn , Staten Island , Queens and the Bronx (a 3-part series).

6. SEATTLE jazz weekend trips with friends

with tour friends

I love Seattle, Washington. Its Pike Place Market and waterfront restaurants. Plenty of jazz clubs. And lots of excellent shopping and coffee shops, too. Seattle has beautiful waterfront parks, artsy museums, Space Needle views, and boat tours to stay busy. Time it with a concert, too!

When I visited Seattle with one of my best friends, we LOVED the comfortable beds and pillows at the Staypineapple Maxwell Hotel . You simply cannot get a better sleep! It’s colorful vibe is super fun, too, and it has an indoor pool and bikes you can use. Price includes wifi.

Now, as much as I love the Staypineapple beds, you can’t get a better location than The Edgewater . It’s right at Pier 67, with fabulous views of Elliot Bay and the Olympic Mountains. Elegant rooms have fireplaces, cozy furnishings and spa bathroom. The property features an onsite restaurant, gift shop and coffee bar. Price includes wifi and downtown shuttle.

7. Fun LAS VEGAS weekend trips with friends

I’ll admit that Las Vegas is pretty low on my list of places to visit, but I understand the appeal – especially with friends. Awesome shows. Epic shopping. Sights you just won’t see anywhere else.

If you want to embrace the chaos, Las Vegas Strip is the place to stay. If you want to come up to breathe, consider a place like Tahiti Village Resort & Spa near the airport and outlet mall.

You’ll also find some incredible house rentals on VRBO , both near The Strip or near the mountains.

8. Epic CANYON road trips with friends

with tour friends

A great add-on to a friends Vegas trip, especially for the outdoorsy adventurers at heart, is a 2-day canyon road trip . Hike the amazing canyons of Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Grand Canyon North Rim and Antelope slot canyon.

You have some incredible options for places to stay, too. Under Canvas near Lake Powell has lovely tents with a cozy wood-burning stove and private balcony with canyon views. Or book the luxury Amangiri spa resort, tucked right into the rocks. It has an onsite restaurant, bar, concierge, sauna and spa. And the rooms look AMAZING.

Under Canvas near Lake Powell Utah, luxury glamping experience retirement gift for woman friend

9. AMUSEMENT PARK hopping trips with friends

Are you guys dare-devils? How fun would it be to go amusement park hopping together?!

Top on my list are Coney Island in New York City and Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, California. In Canada, Montreal’s Six Flags is lots of fun.

To visit a bunch on one trip, take a road trip through California or Pennsylvania. Yup, Pennsylvania! Check out this USA Today article for 17 awesome parks.

10. BEACH resort weekend getaway with friends

Ponte Vedra Inn, Hotels for romantic getaways to Florida USA, romantic weekend getaways United States, Ponte Vedra Inn

You can have an amazing beach resort getaway with friends even without leaving the continental USA. One of my favorite spots is about half an hour from downtown Jacksonville, Florida, at the lovely Ponte Vedra Beach seaside community. It’s also known as San Pablo Island, and is a great mixture of relaxing beaches and bustling Jacksonville nearby.

A wonderful place for a beach weekend getaway with friends is Ponte Vedra Inn and Club . Its beach and gardens are beautiful, with warm and comfortable rooms. Enjoy four heated pools, bikes, seven restaurants and lounges, and plenty of onsite shops and boutiques. Despite all of its amenities, it feels like a charming boutique inn.

Our equivalent for relaxation in Canada is Prince Edward Island. It’s super low-key and perfect for friends who just want to chill.

Dalvay by the Sea Hotel is classic and luxurious, located on the north shore. It’s inside a national park and has an onsite restaurant, bar, tennis courts and bike rentals. Or stay in one of many lovely historic inns in Charlottetown. I highly recommend the charming Fairholm National Historic Inn .

14. WINE AND SPA getaways with friends

Auberge du Soleil in Napa Valley California, best places to travel with friends in USA

Do you girls love sipping wine and relaxing with beautiful views? One of the best places to travel with friends in the USA is Napa Valley, California. Napa Valley is about 1.5 hours northeast of the San Francisco International Airport. You’ll find more than 375 wineries, more than 150 restaurants, and beautiful weather year-round. Napa Valley is nestled among two mountain ranges, with incredible views wherever you look.

There’s something about a crafting getaway that screams “treat”! How often do you dedicate time to create together?

You can find accommodations that offer things like cooking classes or join a retreat that focuses on a particular craft, like painting. For me and my friends, we’d just bring our favorite crafting supplies to a cozy cabin retreat with a hot tub and views.

15 BEST Places to travel with friends in Europe and the world

Taking international trips with friends is a sure way to create lasting memories and bonds. But the stress of international travel will put pressure on your friendship. Make sure you choose a destination that complements your relationship and how you enjoy spending time together.

In Europe, my favorite place to look for accommodations is Plum Guide . You’ll find the coolest house rentals ever, all verified and not all ridiculously expensive.

Here are awesome places to travel with friends in the world, including Europe.

16. European CASTLE getaway with friends

Take your international trip with friends around Europe chasing castles! The biggest challenge will be narrowing your castle adventure to a geographical area, like England or France.

Pick the most iconic castle or area you most want to see and plan the rest of your friends vacation from there. Here are three ideas:

  • Neuschwanstein Castle (Germany): The most classic fairytale-like castle nestled in the Bavarian Alps. Take in its stunning architecture, lush surroundings, and panoramic views. Other (relatively) nearby castles to visit include the medieval and mountaintop Hohenwerfen Fortress in Austria and
  • Château de Chambord (France): A Renaissance masterpiece with elegant French architecture and vast gardens. It’ll enchant you with its grand halls and intricate details. Other notable French castles to visit include the lovely Château de Chenonceau built atop an old mill and the opulent Palace of Versailles.
  • Eilean Donan Castle (Scotland): A remarkably enchanting castle among many in Scotland, with its charming bridge and moss-covered walls near the entrance to the Isle of Skye. My other favorite castles are on the opposite side of Scotland: the grand Sterling Castle and romantic cliffside Dunnottar Castle.

17. International trips with friends to AUSTRIA

Panoramic views of Melk from Melk Abbey's terrace

Austria is a captivating blend of stunning landscapes, rich history, and cultural experiences. Start your trip with friends in Vienna , the capital city. It’s a hub of art, music and architecture, with magnificent palaces, cathedrals and museums. Pick accommodations near City Center so you can walk to St. Stephen’s Cathedral for evening drinks.

Then, travel through the Danube’s Wachau Valley before heading south to Salzburg. Wachau Valley is a beautiful area of vineyards and cute villages along the river valley. I also highly recommend a stop at Stift Melk Abbey .

Roam the streets and hills surrounding the lovely city of Salzburg , the birthplace of Mozart and setting for the Sound of Music. It’s a charming old town with cobblestone streets, lovely gardens, and the iconic Hohensalzburg Fortress looming above.

20. Road trips through ITALY with friends

I’ve been to Italy only once and long to go back. There is SO much to see in Italy and it would be absolutely amazing to experience it with my best girl friends. Given the variety of sights to see, I recommend either getting a train pass for the time you’re there or renting a car.

On a road trip through Italy, start and stop in the vibrant city of Rome. Rome is a must-visit for historical landmarks like the Colosseum, Vatican City, and the Trevi Fountain. Stroll its charmings streets while indulging in pastas and gelato.

Then head up to Venice, a unique floating city built on canals. On your return to Rome, stop in Florence to see the famous Statue of David and beautiful churches. Then calm things down with a few days exploring the stunning Cinque Terre coastline and Tuscany wineries.

If you have more time, continue south of Rome to explore the historic ruins of Pompeii. It’s just south of Naples, another gorgeous coastal city. Sorrento and the Amalfi coast promise more spectacular views and memories for an epic trip with friends.

21. Explore ICELAND on a trip with friends

Iceland is a magical land of fire and ice, with waterfalls, the Blue Lagoon and ice caves. It’s an amazing trip with friends who love exploring nature’s wonders … and don’t mind a remote experience. There are no Starbucks in Iceland! But you will find other delicious coffee.

Visit the famous Golden Circle, which includes the breathtaking Gullfoss waterfall, the Geysir geothermal area, and the Þingvellir National Park. Take in the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and nearby Diamond Beach. Hike through the mesmerizing landscapes of Landmannalaugar or the volcanic region of Mývatn. Discover rugged fjords and black sand beaches, and then soak in the soothing Blue Lagoon geothermal spa.

If you want to explore Iceland’s famous ice caves or chase the Northern Lights, you must come in winter. Plan your friend’s trip between mid-November and mid-March.

22. Fun CARIBBEAN CRUISE trips with friends

A cruise is as easy as they come for trips with friends. Choose a destination, timing, and go!

A super easy cruise vacation for friends would be the Bahamas or Caribbean. Hop from beautiful island to beautiful island, all while enjoying luxury amenities, entertainment, and dining onboard.

A cruise is also a fantastic solution to taking trips with friends who have different interests. So long as you can agree on a cruise destination, you can go your separate ways in the afternoon and come back together at dinner.

23. INDIA adventure places to travel with friends

India is rich in cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and unforgettable experiences for friends traveling together. Explore the bustling streets of Delhi and vibrant markets of Jaipur. Visit the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra. And take a spiritual journey in Varanasi.

But to see the best of India on your trip with friends, you need to leave the popular northern cities. Travel south to the popular Kovalam Beach and witness the breathtaking landscapes of Kerala’s backwaters.

Find incredible treehouses for your next best adventure with friends! Check out these treehouses on Booking.com , including in India, Chile, Costa Rica and more.

24. International trips with friends to THAILAND

Are you and your friends intrigued by Asian culture and finding the perfect secluded beach (like in The Beach movie)? Then I’m guessing Thailand is on your radar for international places to visit with friends.

My main tip for visiting Thailand is to get out of Bangkok as quickly as possible. It’s busy, smoggy and not especially friendly. Instead, head north to Chiang Mai to experience the floating markets . Climb an ancient temple and brush up against an elephant. Then indulge at a beach resort at Phuket or the Phi Phi islands . Bask on white sand beach, surrounded by gorgeous limestone peaks and perfect turquoise waters.

Interested in a guided group tour? I highly recommend Intrepid small group tours for an incredibly rich, “local” experience. They have tours into Northern and Southern Thailand, including food and beach tours!

25. Epic CAMBODIA trips with friends

Angkor Wat temple in Cambodia, best international trips, bucket list destinations

Ancient temples, jungle and Tomb Raider. And an incredibly resilient people that carry an awful history of genocide. Cambodia is a place that will touch your soul and guarantees a friends trip you’ll never forget.

You’ll want to visit both the capital of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, home to the famous temples. In Phnom Penh, visit markets, temples and gardens. But hold onto your food, because those monkeys are gutsy! And my opinion is that tourists should pay their respects at the genocide sites . How else can we begin to appreciate what their people have been through?

In Siem Reap, explore the gorgeous temple ruins of Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple and Ta Prohm. A local guide can also take you to lesser-known temples you can climb with a jungle view all to yourself. Be sure to have a drink at The Red Piano and ask for a Tomb Raider drink. Cheers!

When I was in Siem Reap, my sister challenged me to do more than visit, so I will challenge you. Read about my experience of donating blood in Cambodia . (Yes, it was safe.)

26. JAPANESE MONASTERY places to travel with friends

Mount Koya Japanese monastery, best international trips with friends

I’ve only had a taste of visiting Japan on a layover in Tokyo on our way to Vietnam, but they completely charmed me with their hospitality! Japan is now on my bucket list, and specifically the zen experience of staying in Japanese monasteries.

Two iconic Japanese monastery communities to visit on a trip with friends include Kōya-san (Mount Kōya) and Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion). Mount Kōya is in a mountainous region about 7 hours southwest of Tokyo. It’s home to over a hundred temples including the famous Kongōbu-ji. Stay in shukubo (temple lodgings) with traditional Japanese-style rooms, vegetarian meals, and the opportunity to participate in morning meditations.

Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) is right in Kyoto. It’s known for its stunning golden exterior, and creates a breathtaking view as it reflects off the surrounding pond. Explore its exquisite gardens and the historic tea house inside the complex.

27. Fun AUSTRALIA beach road trips with friends

Australia is known for powdery white-sand beaches. So, rent a car and go beach-hopping on a road trip with friends!

Fly into Sydney and start your trip with friends at the iconic Bondi Beach . It’s known for its vibrant atmosphere, excellent surf and coastal walks. Take in the lively beach culture as you sample the many beachside cafes.

Then, head south for about 3 hours to Hyams Beach in Jervis Bay. It holds a Guinness World Record for having the whitest sand. Swim and snorkel at these beautiful clear waters and enjoy the laid-back coastal vibe.

Along the way, stop at the coastal Royal National Park and inland Heathcote National Park . They offer rugged hiking and other adventures that balance nicely with beach-bumming!

28. International trips with friends to BRAZIL

Along with Iguazu Falls, experience Brazil’s beaches, rainforest and Rio de Janeiro. Make the epic climb up to Christ the Redeemer for epic views.

If you’re interested in a guided tour, check out Trafalgar’s tours in South America . This would be an easy way to explore the best sights on a trip with friends.

29. COSTA RICA best places to travel with friends

Costa Rica resort, romantic beach Christmas vacation ideas for couples, best international trips

I SO want to experience the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve in Costa Rica. And stay in treehouse resorts. It sounds incredible.

Costa Rica is a tropical paradise known for its incredible biodiversity and natural wonders. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve offers breathtaking views, misty forests, and the chance to see rare wildlife. The nearby Arenal Volcano National Park provides thrilling hikes and hot springs for relaxing afterwards.

For a beach experience, head to Manuel Antonio National Park. Manuel Antonio National Park is renowned for stunning beaches and lots of wildlife, perfect for relaxing and snorkeling. It’s on the Pacific Ocean and accessible by road.

With its lush rainforests, stunning coastlines, and eco-friendly practices, Costa Rica offers a memorable and sustainable travel experience for friends.

30. Fun MEXICO beach trips with friends

There’s a reason why North Americans flock to beautiful Mexico! Mexico has some of the world’s finest beaches, best preserved Mayan ruins and fascinating, colorful cultures. But with all the options, where should you travel with friends? I suggest two.

First, Cancun is an obvious choice. It’s a world-class destination with something for everyone. Exquisite beaches, first-class hotels, a more authentic downtown area, Mayan ruins and fantastic weather year-round. For an incredible trip with Mom to Cancun, stay at the adults-only all-inclusive Le Blanc Spa Resort .

A second, quieter choice is Playa Maroma. About 30 miles from Riviera Maya, Playa Maroma has arguably the best beaches in the world. Plus rainforests and snorkeling right off the beach. A beautiful all-inclusive resort to check out is Catalonia Playa Maroma .

Enjoy at Le Blanc Spa Resort Fish Spa, Massage, DeepTissue and more.

18 Great Trips to Take With a Group

From Mykonos to Aspen, these are unforgettable group trips for every type of traveler.

Lindsay Cohn is a writer, editor, and avid traveler who has visited 45 countries across six continents — and counting. She contributes to Travel + Leisure, Hotels Above Par, InsideHook, Well+Good, The Zoe Report, and more.

with tour friends

The chance to explore an exciting new destination, or revisit a favorite spot, with your pals is one of the great joys of travel. Virtually any place has the potential to be great for a vacation with friends. (You just might have to get a bit creative in some cases.) That being said, some spots are just inherently better suited for a fabulous group trip. And that can take many forms. It might mean lively nightlife, stellar restaurants with space to accommodate your entire crew, loads of activities, or wide, sandy beaches for everyone to sprawl out in the sunshine.

In need of group trip ideas? Our list includes 18 awesome options, whether your ideal getaway is an action-packed city break or a relaxing island escape .

Tokyo, Japan

At once futuristic and deeply rooted in the past, Tokyo showcases glimmering skyscrapers alongside ancient pagodas, giant megamalls, and tiny artisan shops that honor centuries-old traditions. Book an omakase experience (depending on the size of the restaurant, you might have the whole place to yourself) and then hit the pint-size drinking dens in Golden Gai. Splurge on a traditional luxury ryokan stay with an on-site onsen in the middle of the city at Aman Tokyo .

Ibiza, Spain

Many people consider Ibiza to be the ultimate group trip. That's because this Balearic island paradise is famed for its nightlife. Of course, it's not all about bar hopping and beach clubs. Pals who prefer to relax instead of party can visit secluded coves, traipse around the chiller villages, browse the artisan shops, or just make the Six Senses Ibiza vacation HQ. Ibiza also brims with natural beauty and hosts many yoga retreats throughout the year.

Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Searching for the perfect place to surf, do yoga, and chill with your pals? Santa Teresa is a laid-back beach town on Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula with beautiful beaches, great food, and a relaxed pace. It has an international dining scene with cuisine to please any palette, spirited bars right on the sand to watch the stunning sunsets, and lovely local boutiques to pick up souvenirs. And ATV excursions, hiking, and zip-lining offer plenty of opportunities for adventure.

Scottsdale, Arizona

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Scottsdale is quickly gaining steam as a go-to destination for group trips thanks to its broad variety of activities, restaurants, and accommodations. Love high-flying fun? Sunrise hot air balloon rides over the desert await. Craving a little R&R? Book a rejuvenating massage at one of the many destination spas . After a group dinner at FnB Restaurant , snooze at ADERO Scottsdale , the only Autograph Collection property in a certified Dark Sky Community.

Capri, Italy

An upscale coastal Italian getaway with glamorous hotels such as Capri Palace Jumeirah and villa rentals, fresh-caught seafood, chartered boat tours, scenic hikes, a chairlift to the highest point on the island , sun-drenched afternoons at La Fontelina , and aperitivo at the iconic Grand Hotel Quisisana , Capri is a dreamy trip to take with friends. Just be sure to book all your reservations well in advance as things fill up quickly during high season — especially for larger groups.

Cartagena, Colombia

Perched on Colombia's Caribbean coast, Cartagena turns on the charm and makes for a sizzling group getaway. Within its 16th-century stone walls sits a warren of cobbled corridors, preserved Spanish colonial buildings, bougainvillea-clad balconies, striking churches like Catedral de San Pedro Claver, and bustling plazas where groups can sit and sip cocktails while watching local performers. It's also a popular beach destination and provides access to the palm-fringed shores of Isla de Barú and the Islas del Rosario.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

A charming and energetic city with a little bit of everything for everyone, Amsterdam looks like a postcard with colorful old houses, canals, flower-clad bridges, and bike paths. There are many excellent restaurants, fascinating museums, cool neighborhoods, and glorious green spaces such as the famous Vondelpark. And with everything from dance clubs and dive bars to upscale cocktail bars and underground speakeasies, Amsterdam very much deserves its reputation as a party capital of Europe.

The cosmopolitan gateway to the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Thomas is easily accessible with direct flights from most major East Coast airport hubs (which makes things much easier if you have travel buddies flying in from all over). This popular Caribbean vacation destination also wows with its beautiful beaches, incredible snorkeling, interesting cultural sights, and duty-free shopping in the capital of Charlotte Amalie.

New Orleans, Louisiana

A soulful and spirited city on the Mississippi River, New Orleans is a non-stop good time with bars and live music venues around every corner. Need a break from the more raucous side of things? Chow down on flavorful Creole cuisine, go for a ride on the historic St. Charles streetcar, and (provided you're all feeling brave) book an after-dark ghost tour. Then recharge at one of the many design-forward boutique hotels such as The Chloe and Hotel Saint Vincent .

Aspen, Colorado

World-class slopes, swanky lodgings like Hotel Jerome, Auberge Resorts Collection , and a convivial apres ski scene make Aspen the it destination for the jetset crowd come winter. But this legendary Colorado locale also shines during the other seasons. Wildflowers bloom in the spring, summer brings sunny conditions for trekking and cycling, and fall is prime for leaf peeping. We guarantee everyone in your crew will shout out hiking the Maroon Bells as a highlight of the trip.

Bali, Indonesia

There's a reason why everyone who visits Bali falls in love. The Island of the Gods is a magical place with an irresistible mix of nature, culture, wellness, and nightlife. Beautiful beaches, lush rice terraces, yoga, clifftop temples, fishing villages, flavorful cuisine, spa rituals, and jaw-dropping sunsets are just a few of the highlights. And a trip to this Indonesian paradise won't drain your bank account. Groups can split a huge serviced Balinese villa with a pool and ocean views.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

A renowned brewery culture remains one of the biggest reasons to take a trip to Milwaukee . For groups, that translates to good times and sprawling spaces to sip microbrews. In between pints, crews can do a tour to learn about the history of the city's beer industry. A prime perch on Lake Michigan's western shore means access to all sorts of fun waterfront activities, from kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding to jet skiing and sightseeing boat cruises.

Marrakech, Morocco

Hypnotic and at times dizzying, Marrakech is an intoxicating mix of maze-like alleyways, vibrant souks, Moorish architecture, grand palaces, manicured gardens, and ornate mosques. Moments of peace and refreshing mint tea can be found at El Fenn's rooftop refuge above the madness of the medina. Down to splurge on a serene, next-level luxurious stay with your closest friends? The Grand Riad at Royal Mansour Marrakech has a cinema, library, hammam, gym, and two swimming pools.

Da Nang, Vietnam

Does your crew love trying local delicacies? The central Vietnam city of Da Nang is a culinary powerhouse with an array of palate-pleasing delights. The night market stalls overflow with fresh-hauled seafood, and the fragrant aroma of bún chả cá fills the air outside the cafes. Besides mouth-watering food, there are sandy beaches, the Marble Mountains, the Ba Na Hills, and the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort for a swish group stay.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

For some groups, the stress of planning a holiday overshadows the excitement of actually escaping somewhere awesome. That's when a luxury all-inclusive resort comes into play. If you'd rather hit "book" and let the rest unfold in easy, breezy vacation style, consider jetting off to Punta Cana for a few days of oceanfront bliss, great food, and fun with your buddies at the top-rated Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana on beautiful Juanillo Beach.

London, United Kingdom

Love sightseeing, shopping, and theater? London is the perfect place to indulge those passions with your pals. It's home to Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and countless other recognizable landmarks, plus posh shops such as Harrods and Dover Street Market as well as the treasure trove of vintage stores in East London. Of course, no trip would be complete without afternoon tea, taking in a show at Shakespeare's Globe, and shacking up at a five-star London legend like Claridge's .

Vancouver, Canada

Movie and television buffs will jump at the chance to visit Vancouver . Beyond serving as the filming location for countless motion pictures and shows, this dynamic British Columbia seaport dishes up diverse cuisine, live music, art galleries and museums, and outdoor adventure. Want to stay in the heart of the action? Groups will love the 1,492-square-foot Rosewood Suite at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia , which features two bedrooms and a rooftop garden terrace with a plunge pool.

Mykonos, Greece

When a group trip means devouring whole grilled octopus, poppin' bottles, and dancing on tables, it's got to be Mykonos. Greece's unofficial party island has a cosmopolitan atmosphere and tons of bars and beach clubs where world-famous DJs spin tunes. It also boasts five-star hotels with impeccable service and amenities to help you recover from a big night out. Because everyone knows the best hangover cure is a dip in your private plunge pool followed by an in-room massage.

Great Travel Experiences to Enjoy With Friends

Below, you will find a long list of travel ideas you can do with friends. Since we know some of these places may be a bit far to travel to from North America, we’ve included some additional adventures. You can include these in your trip to make the most of your travel time! We’ve also included some useful travel tips for traveling with friends based on our own decades of travel experience.

1. Go snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef.

Roughly the size of 70 million football fields, the Great Barrier Reef off of the eastern coast of Australia is big. Like, really, really big. It’s the world’s largest coral reef system and is home to millions of colorful fish, turtles, sharks, sea snakes, dolphins, seabirds, eels, mollusks, sponges, and, of course, coral. Thanks to this incredible biodiversity and how easily accessible it is from cities like Sydney and Melbourne, it’s high on the bucket lists of many travelers. So, why not take a trip with a great group of friends?

You can choose to visit the Great Barrier Reef on a day trip from Cairns. These boats tend to be big and crowded. It can be difficult to explore the reefs without having a lot of other people around. Alternatively, you can book a spot on one of the liveaboard diving boats that go out for a few days at a time. This is a great option if you have the time and the budget. It allows you to experience the reef with significantly fewer people, and it gives you the chance to spend the night floating above this breathtaking natural landscape.

Expert tip: While you’re underwater, you’re very likely to hear a chomping sound, like someone or something is taking a big bite of something crunchy. That’s actually the colorful parrotfish eating algae off the coral. They’re an important part of the reef’s ecosystem. It’s one of my favorite parts of snorkeling, and I love watching the fish happily chomp away on the coral.

Additional Adventures in Australia

After you’ve snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef, you can continue your Australian adventure by heading up through northern Queensland to the Daintree Rainforest. This is the oldest rainforest in the world at a whopping 135 million years old. You can visit as a day trip from Cairns or spend the night in one of the many lodges located nearby. There are many different hiking trails within the rainforest that let you get a closer look at the unique flora and fauna there.

2. Spend a weekend visiting the historic bars of New York City.

New York is a fascinating city, and many tourists barely even scratch the surface of what it has to offer. For many people, their first visit to the Big Apple includes highlights like Times Square and Broadway, Central Park, and the World Trade Center. However, if you want to see how New Yorkers really spend their time and learn more about the cultural fabric of the city, why not spend a weekend bar hopping through some of the city’s historic dive bars?

The many dive bars scattered across the island of Manhattan are a treasure trove for history buffs looking to get a peek at old NYC. Some of the most popular historic bars, like McSorley’s, Rudy’s, and Jeremy’s Ale House, still have much of their original decor. If you look closely, you can often see the ornate woodwork, colorful flooring, and vaulted ceilings of yesteryears. To make it even better, the drinks are often much, much cheaper than what you would pay at some of the trendy bars of the Meatpacking District or Midtown.

To help break up your day of drinking a bit, we suggest taking the time to see some of the many attractions located near the bars, especially ones off the beaten tourist path, such as the many tiny parks hidden amongst apartment buildings and niche museums that you had no idea even existed.

While you’re there, don’t forget to check out one of the Let’s Roam New York scavenger hunts ! These hunts are expertly designed to help you get off the normal tourist trail and see some of the lesser-known sights. From the public art of Chelsea to the ghost of Greenwich , there’s something to fit the unique tastes of every traveler!

3. Check out the nightlife of Hong Kong.

With buildings that reach high into the sky, sparkling seas, and emerald-green hills, Hong Kong is one of the world’s most photogenic mega-cities. It’s also one of the most vibrant. While New York is often considered the city that never sleeps, Hong Kong can easily be considered the Big Apple’s sister from another mister.

Additional Adventures in Hong Kong

If you don’t have a Chinese visa but still want to combine your trip to Hong Kong with another nearby destination, we highly recommend taking the ferry to Macau. Once a Portuguese colony, Macau is now the Las Vegas of Asia with tons of casinos, grandiose hotels, entertainment venues, and bars. You can still see vestiges of its colonial days in the downtown area as well as some of the original Chinese casinos built there. This creates a fascinating juxtaposition that you can’t find anywhere else and makes it well worth the trip.

4. Take a road trip across Patagonia.

With wide open spaces, rugged mountains, crystal-clear lakes, and charming mountain towns, Patagonia is the ultimate destination for a road trip. You can begin your journey in Santiago and head south, crisscrossing the border of Chile and Argentina. Or, head straight down to Ushuaia, the end of the world, and work your way north from there.

When you’re planning your journey, make sure to leave plenty of time for hiking. This region is home to some of the world’s most magnificent hikes, including the incomparable W Trek in Torres del Paine National Park. This five-day trek takes you high into the Andes Mountains, offering breathtaking views and breathtaking ascents along the way!

Additional Adventures in Chile and Argentina

The lands of Patagonia take a surprisingly long time to get to from the United States, so if you have the time, we definitely recommend staying a bit longer to see other great destinations. Check out the enigmatic Easter Island, the beautiful city of Buenos Aires, or Iguassu Falls, one of the world’s biggest waterfalls. Domestic flights are relatively inexpensive, which makes it easy to travel around. There’s so much to see that you may find yourself wishing you had many months to spend there!

5. Say hello to Lady Luck in Las Vegas.

Will luck be a lady tonight? This is something you can only find out by organizing a fun getaway to Las Vegas ! Las Vegas, Nevada, has come a long way from its days as the original Sin City. Besides what feels like an endless line of slot machines and over-the-top casinos that make you feel like you’re in some weird version of Disneyland, Las Vegas offers some of the world’s best hotels, entertainment venues, bars, and restaurants just waiting to show you a good time (and to take some of that hard-earned money off your hands!). It’s even the temporary home to some of the country’s most famous musical artists who have long-running residencies there.

This fun combination of activities makes it the perfect spot for weekend getaways for anyone wanting to spend the day lounging by the pool with a colorful cocktail in hand, trying their luck on the slot machines, and watching their favorite musicians sing their hearts out.

6. Hit up the all-inclusive resorts of the Yucatan Peninsula.

While it’s fun to DIY your own trip, sometimes nothing beats a week at an all-inclusive resort with your best friends. Gone is the stress of having to pick a restaurant, call a taxi, or find a bar to go to. Instead, you have everything you need all under one roof! All-inclusive resorts range from intimate affairs with a handful of restaurants and idyllic poolsides to full-blown resorts with tons of restaurants, pools, and activities to choose from. These ones are usually a bit better suited for groups of friends, but to each their own, right? The beauty of going to an all-inclusive resort lies in the lack of planning you need to put into it. You can simply show up and be you!

While you can find all-inclusive resorts scattered across the Caribbean and Southeast Asia, we love going to the ones in the Yucatan simply because there is so much to do around them! Not only is the peninsula blessed with gorgeous white sand beaches and marvelous weather most of the year, but it’s also dotted with ancient Mayan ruins, fascinating sinkholes that are perfect for swimming in, and colorful colonial towns. This gives you the chance to easily learn more about the history, culture, and geography of this amazing country!

Some of the most popular areas to stay in include Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, but you can find high-end resorts dotted all along the coastline.

7. Swim with whale sharks in Mexico.

Mexico is famous for having good food, beautiful scenery, great weather, and friendly people. However, if you still need another reason to visit this amazing country, we have one more for you. Mexico is also one of the few places in the world where you can swim with whale sharks.

Whale sharks are the biggest fish on the planet, measuring more than 40 feet in length and weighing as much as 47,000 pounds. Their mouths alone can stretch up to five feet wide with 300 tiny teeth. Although they’re considered sharks, they’re not dangerous to humans. In fact, these gentle giants eat only plankton. Swimming with whale sharks is an incredible experience. Although you get just a few minutes in the water with them due to strict conservation rules, it feels like a lifetime as you watch their muscular bodies glide gracefully below you.

The best place to join a whale shark tour is in Isla de Mujeres, just a short boat ride from Cancun. This tourist-friendly island has a downtown area lined with budget-friendly accommodation options, souvenir shops, and restaurants. It’s a nice, laid-back spot to spend a few days before or after your trip, and it gives you a little taste of Mexico without having to deal with all the craziness of Cancun.

8. Explore the Tuscan wine country in Italy.

While Napa Valley is considered one of the best wine regions in the US, why not think a bit bigger when it comes to having an awesome and memorable vacation with your besties? Just imagine yourselves sitting with a glass of Chianti, overlooking rolling hills lined with vineyards and dotted with historic farmhouses. Taking a wine tour of Tuscany is a great way to try a whole new range of mouthwatering wines that you normally wouldn’t have access to and learn more about Italian culture and heritage.

The wine region of Tuscany in Italy is relatively easy to get to from major tourist hotspots like Florence, Rome, and Milan. Otherwise, you can base yourself in one of the smaller cities or towns nearby, like Sienna, San Gimignano, and Pisa. Here, you will find a wide range of accommodation options, including boutique hotels, charming B&Bs, and vacation rentals. There are also tons of different wine tours that you can choose from. Otherwise, you can create your own DIY wine tour and make your way to the wineries by train, car, or bike. Or go on foot for tours of the wineries and wine tastings.

Additional Adventures in Italy

After you’ve tasted the nectar of the gods in Tuscany, why not visit the ancient delights of Rome or Pompeii? Check out the Renaissance masterpieces in Florence or pretend like you’re holding up a certain tower in Pisa. The comprehensive and budget-friendly train network makes it easy to get around!

9. Take the train across Canada.

All aboard! Epic train rides like the Orient Express may seem like a thing of the past, but in fact, they’re thriving in many parts of the world! The Blue Train in South Africa and The Ghan in Australia are still Mesmerizing riders today. But if you want to try something a little closer to home, you may want to consider riding the long-distance rails of Canada!

Train rides in Canada can range from multi-day adventures to shorter hops between destinations. Some of the most popular routes include Halifax to Montreal and the much longer Rocky Mountaineer that goes from Vancouver all the way to Banff. This luxurious rail journey takes you along the Canadian Pacific Railway in custom-designed trains complete with panoramic glass roofs. The daytime views along the way are breathtaking. At night, you can stop in towns like Whistler, Jasper, Lake Louise, and Quesnel.

10. Visit the honky tonks of Nashville.

Nashville has been THE place to go in the US for live music for decades. From the stages of the Grand Ole Opry and Ryman Auditorium to the bustling honky tonks of the Broadway Historic District, it’s easy to see why it earned the nickname “Music City.” If you and your friends love spending a night out on the town shaking your groove thing, Nashville has plenty of fun in store for you!

One of the best ways to get the night rolling is with our Nashville Bar Crawl Scavenger Hunt ! This hunt will take you to some of the best bars and watering holes in Nashville, giving you plenty of chances to make new memories as you complete one quirky challenge after another!

During the day, you can either explore the many different museums on offer in Music City or head out for a day trip to Mammoth Cave National Park or to the Jack Daniel Distillery, both of which are about an hour and a half drive away. You can also combine it with a mini road trip to Memphis!

11. Go for a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia.

Famous for its fairy chimneys, Cappadocia looks like it’s straight out of a fairy tale. And there’s no better way to view these than from up above! There’s something quite magical about going on a hot air balloon ride. From feeling the heat of the fire to seeing the earth slowly melt away below you, hot air balloons have a special something that many other air activities don’t. It’s an even more memorable experience when you’re flying over something amazing!

Flights depart nearly every morning, weather permitting, and you only normally need to book a few days in advance. Make sure to wear plenty of warm clothes, as it can get pretty chilly up there, and have your cameras ready!

Additional Adventures in Turkey

Before or after visiting Cappadocia, make sure to spend some time exploring Istanbul. Straddling both Europe and Asia, this city truly is where east meets west. It’s a fascinating blend of cultures from all over the world. From there, you can head down to Izmir and begin a southwest Turkey road trip down toward Ephesus, one of the many ancient wonders left behind by the Romans.

12. Island hop in the Aegean Sea.

Most of us have probably seen photos of the Greek Isles. The white-washed houses with their blue roofs surrounded by the sparkling Aegean Sea are the stuff that dreams are made of. This image has graced everything from mouse pads to coffee mugs. While islands like Santorini, Patmos, Mykonos, and Rhodes are incredibly beautiful, one of the best things about visiting them is just how accessible they are!

Although there are many cruises that roam the waters between the Greek islands, you can visit many of the islands simply by hopping onto one of the many ferries leaving Athens, Greece. While this does require a bit more planning than simply booking a cruise, this gives you the chance to spend as much time as you want on each of the islands. You can see what they’re like when the cruises leave.

Additional Adventures in Greece

Once you’ve finished island-hopping, you may want to consider spending a few days exploring the ancient ruins of Athens or traveling up to see the sky-high monasteries of Meteora.

13. Unlock your inner mermaid at Miami Beach.

The beautiful shoreline and sunny weather of Florida have been attracting northerners for centuries, and Miami has long been at the top of the list of must-see destinations. From the white sand beach to the curvy Art Deco architecture, Miami Beach feels like a completely different city than the rest of Miami. By day, you can be lounging around in the sun or wandering up the cute residential streets. By night, you can go to some of the hottest clubs in the entire country.

If you plan on spending the full day at the beach, there are places where you can grab beach chairs and umbrella rentals that allow you to get extra comfy, and don’t forget to bring plenty of sunscreen with you! Nothing ruins a great vacation faster than a painful sunburn.

Travel tip: While you’re in Miami, don’t forget to visit Wyndood Walls. This collection of street art and murals spread across warehouses and shop exteriors resembles a long line of outdoor art galleries. The neighborhood is also home to a few microbreweries and pop-up restaurants, making it a great place for foodies and craft beer lovers who are in serious need of a break from the beach.

14. Get weird in Austin, Texas.

Located in the great state of Texas, Austin is unapologetically weird. Home to both the University of Texas’s main campus and the Texas State Capitol, the city has an interesting mix of government buildings and a fun, youthful energy. As you would expect from a city this diverse, there is a wide range of restaurants, bars, and cultural attractions to choose from. You can even do your very own pub crawl while you’re there!

Austin isn’t just all culture-vulturing, though. There are plenty of unique activities to do here. During your stay, you can cool down at Barton Springs, a natural pool full of fresh water, watch millions of bats take flight at the Congress Avenue Bridge, take a stroll around Lady Bird Lake, or pick up your very own pair of authentic cowboy boots at Allen’s Boots, an Austin institution!

15. Enjoy a week of outdoor adventures in Iceland.

Iceland was once a bit of a hidden gem for outdoor adventure and other-worldly natural attractions. However, with the rise of low-cost airlines and a massive drop in their currency, Iceland became much more accessible as a vacation destination. Suddenly, it exploded onto seemingly every must-see list. While the excitement surrounding Iceland as a destination has abated a bit, this doesn’t mean that it is any less stunning than it was a few years ago. It simply means that you are likely to have many of the biggest sites all to yourself!

Most people start their trip in the capital city of Reykjavik before venturing out for an epic road trip on Iceland’s famous Ring Road. Stretching 825 miles, this road takes you by some of the biggest natural attractions in the country, including Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, Dyrhólaey cliffs, and Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. While the entire road can be driven in 24 hours, it is best to slow down and take your time so that you can truly enjoy all of the many waterfalls, glaciers, gorges, and hiking trails you see along the way.

Before you leave, make sure to take some time to relax at the Blue Lagoon, which is conveniently located close to the airport. This will give you some time to reflect on your remarkable journey and all of the magnificent things you saw and did!

16. Get your jazz on in New Orleans.

Throughout the course of history, the city of New Orleans changed hands repeatedly. This wave of cultures left an undeniable mark on the city in terms of architecture, culture, cuisine, and, of course, music. New Orleans is the birthplace of jazz, so what better place could there be to spend a few evenings at a smoky jazz club listening to these lively melodies? Some of the most popular places to listen to jazz music include the historic Preservation Hall and the intimate The Spotted Cat, so one of these should be your first port of call regardless of whether you are a jazz aficionado or a new fan!

While New Orleans is famous for its nightlife, there is plenty to do during the day as well! You can explore the streets of the French Quarter, explore the wide boulevards lined with stately homes in the Garden District, or visit world-class museums, such as the National WWII Museum or the New Orleans Museum of Art.

Travel tip: If you plan on traveling to New Orleans during Mardi Gras, make sure to book your accommodation well in advance as places tend to sell out very quickly!

17. Explore the natural wonders of Costa Rica.

Thanks to the country’s focus on providing excellent ecotourism experiences, the country of Costa Rica has been a fantastic vacation destination for decades. With beautiful beaches, tranquil cloud forests, smoking volcanoes, and gushing waterfalls, Costa Rica provides the perfect backdrop for tons of great outdoor activities. During your trip, you can put some miles in on the hiking trails, go ziplining above the treeline, or spend your days relaxing on the beach, enjoying the sea breezes coming off the Caribbean.

Travel tip: Prices for hotels and activities have gone up substantially in Costa Rica over the past few decades, making it one of the most expensive travel destinations in Latin America. Make sure to double-check the prices of things before you book your hotels and flights to ensure you will be able to have the vacation you’re dreaming of without having to empty your bank account too much!

17 Fun Things To Do With Friends That Are Budget-Friendly

fun things to do with friends

You can still have fun and stay within your budget! These fun things to do with friends are budget-friendly, cheap, and still a blast!

Everyone loves traveling and going to concerts – but so many fun activities seem like they cost so much that you need to save up for months to do them.

Thankfully, there are still a ton of nearly-free things that you can do together. Check out all 17 ideas on this list and pick out the most fun ones for your friend group.

Nearly-Free Fun Things To Do With Friends

Everything comes with a basic cost, but the ideas on this list can be as inexpensive as you make them. Even better? All of them will create memories that you will cherish for a lifetime!

#1 Frisbee Golf

This first idea is super cheap because all you need is a frisbee – and you can get those for less than $15 at most stores. Look up your local parks and see if they have a frisbee golf course. If not, you can create your own with a few more supplies. This tutorial shows you how, and all you need is a round laundry basket and a tomato cage.

Even if you have never played disc golf in your entire life, learning how to play it is half the fun! You’ll enjoy laughing together as you try to see who can make it into the baskets in the fewest tries. It’s harder than it looks!

Picnics are always a popular idea with friends. In fact, you can even make them a weekly or monthly date that you try to do regularly. To save even more money, do it pot-luck style. Ask each person to bring a dish for everyone to share. You can even do themed meals by choosing a certain cuisine for everyone to bring.

There are so many ways to make this a really fun and memorable activity. Pick one spot that is “your spot” that you return to each time. Or, explore a new park or area of town each time.

Bonus: this one is great for parents with kids too! You can sit and sip while your kiddos run around and tire themselves out!

#3 Bake Cookies

Baking is another almost cheap thing that you can do together. The best part is that when you are done, you have some delicious cookies you can eat!

The most fun type of cookies to make together is probably sugar cookies because you can decorate them at the end too.

There are literally hundreds of cookie recipes out there! Just like picnics, you can even set up a regular cookie baking night together too! Make a different type of cookie together each time. To save even more money, ask each person to bring one of the ingredients, or rotate turns hosting.

Another fun thing to do with friends is to explore local hiking trails. If you live near a national park, pile everyone into one car and split the entry fee.

The easiest way to find hiking trails is to use AllTrails . All you do is type in the city or park name and it brings you trails listed by how difficult they are. It also tells you how long the trail is, reviews from other hikers, and a map along with directions! This is a very user-friendly site so definitely use it before you go hiking.

#5 Create A Scavenger Hunt

Get together and create a scavenger hunt for each other. This is more fun when one or two people create the scavenger hunt for everyone else, so take turns being the “hunt creator.”

All you really need is some paper and pens for this activity. Then, you can do the hunt around one park or take it all the way across town. The difficulty and length of time are entirely up to you.

To stay within your budget, just make the prize something that doesn’t cost a lot of money. It could be something as simple as a fake trophy that you pass around the group each time someone finishes the hunt or as fun as “winner gets free lunch from the group.”

#6 Explore A Nearby Town

Become tourists in your own state. Get in the car and just start driving – you can’t really get lost when you have a GPS on your phone!

If you are more comfortable planning it out, decide to explore towns that are nearby that you haven’t been to before. Use your phone to research the history of the town and try their most popular coffee shops out.

Take your time and stop along the way to take pictures and have the freedom to make changes last minute and check out other towns that you see.

#7 Learn To Cook Together

Ask everyone to bring one of the ingredients and plan to try and learn a new dinner recipe together – including a fun side dish! Try something that you find on Pinterest or challenge each other to be an Iron Chef and create your own recipes from scratch!

The best thing about this idea is that you will be able to enjoy the food you cook at the end. You can even choose from this list of 37 freezer meals and meal prep together!

#8 Start A Book Club

How many people in your friend group enjoy reading? Start a book club! Decide together what you are going to read and set aside time to discuss what you read that week. You can even do these meetings virtually thanks to the magic of Zoom and Google Meet.

The best part is that you can usually find paperback books for pretty cheap, especially used.

#9 Do A Virtual Painting Class

This is probably the most expensive idea on the list, but it is definitely worth the investment! Paint nights are always so much fun! Lots of places nearby have paint nights where you show up and they have everything you need – the canvas, the paints, and the brushes. You just follow along with the teacher.

There are also lots of virtual paint parties that you can do too! In fact, the most popular one is Paint and Sip Live and they ship all the supplies you need to your door. You and your friends can have a painting party at your house!

#10 Movie Night

Having a movie night is always a classic choice! Did you know you can host a watch party and do a virtual movie night? Yup! No one has to get dressed and everyone can stay in their PJs on their own couches.

Netflix Party is a Chrome Extension that lets you chat while you watch the same Netflix movie together.  If you have Amazon Prime, you can set up an Amazon Watch Party . To use it, everyone in your friend group must have Amazon Prime.

If chatting while you are watching a show or movie is distracting, you can do it the “old fashioned way” and just text each other in a group chat while it’s on. This way, you can ignore it or chat whenever you want.

#11 Tie-Dye Shirts

All you need to do this activity is a white t-shirt, some dye, and rubber bands! It’s a pretty low-cost activity and there are a bunch of creative designs you can make with tie-dying. In fact, if you want to try out some different tying techniques, check out By Stephanie Lynn .

You don’t have to tie-dye shirts. Have fun dying all sorts of things! Dye some headscarves, skirts, pajama sets, and even tote bags.

#12 Take A Ghost Tour

Which one of your friends spooks the easiest? This is definitely one of my favorite fun things to do with friends! Ghost tours are usually really low-priced and a really fun way to get to know the history of your hometown.

Do your research ahead of time and check out places that are really popular for ghost-hunters! Even if you don’t believe in hauntings, it’s a fun way to hear some spooky stories together.

#13 Host A Spa Day

Another one of the most fun things to do with friends is to host your own spa day! Tell everyone to bring something different for the spa day. This can include face masks, foot scrubs, and lotions.

Set the scene and enjoy a day of self-care. Turn on some zen background music, light some candles, and dim the lights. This is going to be relaxing and rejuvenating for everyone.

spa day

#14 Concerts In The Park

When the weather is nice enough, check out live music at a local park. Look up local concerts – there might even be some open mic nights at coffee shops or smaller venues.

This is a fun and cheap way to discover new music.

#15 Volunteer Together

Lots of organizations are short-staffed and always welcome the help. Decide as a group where you want to volunteer and do it together. This could even become a regular thing that you do as a group.

If you don’t have time to volunteer every week or month, then do some good by going shopping for a local food bank or asking if any organizations need any one-time help.

#16 Video Game Tournament

Which of your friends owns the most video games? Go to their house and set up a video game tournament! Do something funny for the winner – maybe the winner gets free lunch from the losers?

Mario Kart is one of the best fun things to do with friends in a large group. Or, you can play smaller games in a tournament- style. Either way, there are a lot of laughs and jabs to be had.

#17 Karaoke

Finally, if you  really want a good laugh, start singing! There are a ton of Karaoke YouTube videos out there, so you don’t need a Karaoke machine or to go in front of a ton of strangers. Host a sing-a-long night at your house.

If your friend group isn’t into singing, play some free “Name That Tune” games on Youtube instead.

You don’t have to spend a ton of money to have fun with your friends! Decide together what you want to do and then try a few new things! Some of them are outside and some are inside – try them all!

With so many great ideas of things to do with friends , you can really make sure your friends have a great time. But how do you pick the best idea ?

1. Make sure they can do it

Before you pick some things to do with friends, you need to consider what your group of friends can actually do. Some friends don't mind small spaces, but if your friends are afraid of small spaces, it is probably best to steer clear of an escape room.

2. Make it interesting

When you are picking things to do with your friends, try to pick something new. If apple picking or board games are a regular occurrence, try and move away from these ideas and pick something new. A little variety makes every so much more exciting.

3. Don't take it too seriously

At the end of the day, the people that you spend time with the most are your friends. With common interests and tastes, it's difficult to choose the wrong thing to do. So all that leaves you to do is to have fun and enjoy your time with your friends.

4. Take A Vote

Sometimes, democracy really is the best way. If everyone votes on what they want to do, then you can make sure that everyone feels that they were given a fair shot.

5. Make Sure Everyone Has A Role To Play

Remember to make sure all of your friends are involved in your chosen activity. If you have a group of five friends, don't choose an activity that leaves people standing on the sidelines .

The best games for large groups are ones where everyone has a role to play.

6. Choose An Activity Related To Something You All Love

Friends think alike, so there's gotta be something you all have in common. Think about what brings you together more than anything else, and the best activity will be obvious.

If you're still not sure, think about some of the best memories you've had together as friends , and try to replicate those experiences with similar activity.

7. Teamwork Is Always Fun

If possible, try to choose an activity that involves all of you working together towards a common goal. Competitiveness can be fun, but it can also cause arguments and rifts in your group of friends.

To make sure it's all about laughing and having fun, try to choose an activity in which you're all on the same team.

8. Minimize Clean Up

What activities are good for teenagers?

There are a number of things teenagers can do! They can play a fun board game or chill at a fun Netflix party. Being young allows you to enjoy a wide variety of things, so as long as the activity you're looking to do isn't specifically geared for adults, they can enjoy pretty much anything.

How to make any moment memorable with friends?

Do we need to spend much to enjoy this list?

Not at all! A lot of the items on this list can be enjoyed cheaply, or even for free. People can make their own fun without needing to spend a lot - the important thing is to enjoy doing what you do, not how much you sunk into it.

Any tips on how to make these activities more interesting?

In my opinion, anything can be better if you make a game out of it; do some friendly competition, set aside prizes for winners (if there are any)... Everything can be made even more interesting if you can make progress along with your friends.

When is the best time to have fun with friends?

Obviously, the best time to have fun is when you and your friends have free time! During weekends, during school breaks, or just any time you don't have anything planned, is the best time you can spend hanging out with friends.

Looking for fun things to do with friends inside, no matter what the weather? Want some budget-friendly activities to do with friends at home, any day, any time? Then you’ve come to the right place! Here’s 45+ fun things to do with friends at home (that you’re going to LOVE!)

See quality time is essential – not just in romantic relationships, but to build on the friendships that you have with others too. It’s not just about how much time you spend with someone though, but what you do during that time that makes a real difference as well.

So instead of sticking the TV on, or just sitting down for the same-old glass of wine every time, why not try some of these different activity suggestions? Really mix things up!

Disclaimer: As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. That means that I may make a commission if you click through and purchase.

In no particular order then, let’s jump in with our top 45+ suggestions for fun things to do with friends at home.

Have a read, share this article with your friends, then plan at least ONE “mates night” based on these suggestions.

See, when it comes to fun things to do with friends at home, you could…

1) Have a Pamper Night

A pamper night is always one of the best things to do with friends at home because it’s budget-friendly, therapeutic and can help to get you in the habit of practicing daily self care .

So get your girls around, and load up with beauty treatments!

You want to have face cleansers, exfoliation, face masks, toners, moisturiser, oils… the lot!

Your girls can bring over their own favourite products and devices, and you can all make recommendations for each other.

You can also buy some extra pamper packs for an extra special treat! Then simply sit back, relax, put your feet up and have a good chat…

It’s the next best thing to having a spa day. Only this one, you’re in the comfort of one of your homes, with your “comfies” on!

2) OR An Adults “Slumber Party”

Who says you’re too old for a slumber party?! See, adults can have these too! Pack an overnight bag and take it in turns to host a slumber party within your friendship group.

You can set a theme, or just see who ends up being the “hostess with the mostest.”

Expect the classic: pjs, pillow fights, or even make a fort like you would as a kid. Only now that you’re older, expect to value the quality time and heart to heart conversations that adult slumber parties bring, even more.

See, we happen to think that a slumber party is one of the best things to do with friends at home to bring you closer, so it’s undoubtably one to add to your mates-night list!

Want to make it a little bit spicy? Then throw in some of these juicy questions to ask your friends , but you pick the tone and the theme!

3) Host A Cocktail Party

Looking for fun things to do with friends at home? Then you can never go wrong with a girly cocktail party! Get the girls around and have fun making some cocktails together…

You don’t have to be drink masters and it’s more than likely that you’ll end up making them far too strong (oops!) but you’ll have so many giggles in the process.

There are actually heaps of simple cocktail recipes to try at home, so grab a cocktail making kit then work your way through them – rating each others creations to see who’s tastes and looks the best!

For any non-drinkers or sober curious – mocktails are absolutely an option too!

4) Do Wine / Cider / Beer / Gin / Vodka (etc) Tasting

Another one of the boozier things to do with friends at home if you’re looking for a night in that can actually compare with a girls night out, is to host a tasting night!

The options to this one are endless because you can do it with almost anything – wine, beer, cider, gin, vodka, whiskey. You name it!

How it works? Well, each person brings a different brand or flavour of the chosen alcohol, and you rate them all to find your favourite.

If there’s some different ones – you could even pour them into a glass (secretly mark them underneath so that you know who’s is who’s & which is which!) then try to guess the flavour.

It’s heaps of fun and a cheaper alternative than doing it out in a bar.

5) Make Your Own Gin / Vodka / Rum / Wine

Want to go one step further? Then instead of simply tasting – have a go at making!

My personal favourite is the “Do Your Own” Range with my preference being – rum.

It’s fun, different, very fancy… And an activity you can do, to make something you can then actually drink / use. So it’s a win=win.

6) Do Chocolate / Cheese Tasting!

Want to steer clear of alcohol? Then another alternative is to host a chocolate / cheese tasting night for your friends – depending on whether you’re more of a “sweet” or “savoury” gal.

Again, it can work in the same way where everyone brings something slightly different, and you take it in turns to try the chocolate / cheese – analysing each one and ranking them.

(Uh huh, you’ll feel like complete connoisseurs by the end!) On a similar note…

7) Have a Dessert Night

When looking for fun things to do with friends at home, you can NEVER go wrong with a dessert night! (I mean, what’s not to love about it?!)

Get your pals around, with each of them bringing a different dessert of their choice. It can be homemade or shop bought – or you can try to guess!

Then you just taste, try, indulge and really treat yourselves. Because hey – you deserve it!

8) Do a Big Bestie Bake-Off

A big bestie bake-off is exactly the same as desert night, except with this one – everyone obviously makes their own creations, and one of you will then be crowned the “champion baker!”

It’s the perfect way to get you into baking as a new hobby , as you’ll have to “up your game” if you want to win!

You can even grab a cheap little Golden Spoon Trophy for the winner, to make it even more fun and playful.

Or, if you’re looking for fun things to do with friends at home, on a regular basis – you can take it in turns to host, with each of you trying your baking masterpiece, in your own home…

So you’ll alternate it and run the competition over a number of weeks.

This leads me onto our next suggestion…

9) Have Themed Dinner Nights

This is one of our favourite foodie date ideas , but it’s also something you can do with friends instead.

How it works? Well, you cook traditional food to a particular country / cuisine, and pair it with a traditional activity (or two!) that matches.

For example:

Let’s say you went for “Japanese Night” – you could eat sushi and make origami.

Or with Italian night for example, you could make pasta / pizza and have that as the activity before indulging in your home-made goodies!

There’s plenty of different cuisines all over the world, and you can decide how much you want to narrow it down… You can also have fun seeing just how creative you can get with it too!

So it’s a really fun and different thing to do with friends at home – that works during a weekday evening, or over the weekend.

Fun Things To Do With Friends At Home

10) Or a Potluck Dinner!

Another alternative that gets all of your friends chipping in, is to host a potluck dinner night at one of your homes.

This works where each person brings a specific part of the meal, and you combine each of the elements for the ultimate feast! Clever, huh?

11) Have a Breakfast Mates-Date

So often when you’re looking for fun things to do with friends at home, you automatically think of afternoon or evening activities…

But why not mix it up, by heading over in the morning instead?

Morning date ideas are actually proving to be ever-popular, and they can work in the same way when considering what to do with your friends.

So why not head over to your mates for a cute breakfast date?! You can treat yourselves to pancakes, pastries or waffles etc, or go all out with bacon and eggs…

Coffee and a catch up with it is, of course, also a must!

12) Or Do Your Own Bottomless Brunch

Bottomless brunch is a super popular activity to do with friends, but it can prove to be rather pricey. So, the alternative? To do your own at home!

Even if you order in (to cut out the cooking) the “boozy” part of the brunch is far cheaper when you’re buying it yourself and hosting it at home.

It’s also just as fun – if not more – as you can blast your music at the same time, or even keep your pjs / comfies on if you really want / need!

And if it’s a seasonal celebration or for a special occasion all the better…

For instance – boozy bottomless brunch “mates date” a fun Christmas Eve activity?! Sounds perfect, right?!

how to celebrate christmas with friends

13) Garden Picnic or BBQ

If the weather’s good and you’re looking for summer activities you can do at home, then a BBQ or garden picnic is always a good shout. In fact, you can’t really go too far wrong with it!

Pair it with garden games, and good company, and you’re always in for a successful afternoon!

14) Indoor Picnic Lunch

Looking for fun things to do with friends at home, when the weather is bad? Fun things that are also DIFFERENT? Then an indoor picnic is your answer!

It works in the same way as an outdoor garden picnic, but instead – you get the blankets out on your living room carpet and take it all inside.

It’s incredibly cosy, cute and memorable. In fact, it’s one of the most popular winter date ideas at home for this reason, and can be easily replicated with friends!

If you all chip in to bring something different for the picnic, it also reduces the ‘workload’ and actually, trying different things from different people is one of the best bits!

15) Do Homemade Afternoon Tea

Got a friends birthday coming up? Or a special occasion? Want to go to a bit of effort? Then making homemade afternoon tea is a super cute idea.

We’re talking mini sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, then of course the fancy miniature cakes, all served on a pretty, pink, afternoon tea stand . (Adorable or what?!)

After all, there’s different ways to say I love you , and going to the effort to do something like this for your friends, is guaranteed to show them how much you love and appreciate them!

girly things to do at home

16) Take on a Home Escape Room

Love challenges? Been to an escape room before and enjoyed it? Then grab a home escape room game and do one at home, for a fraction of the cost!

They’re fun, fast paced and really get you thinking, so they’re a great activity when looking to mix mundane evenings up!

17) Or Do a Murder Mystery Night

On a similar note – did you know that you can grab murder mystery games , to do these with friends at home? These work as one of the best group date ideas .

You’ll have the characters, you’ll each really get into character yourself, you’ll have scripts to read, and everything will be uncovered…

Only, again, all of this comes for just a fraction of the price, and you can go ALL OUT, with fancy dress, takeaway food… the lot!

My personal favourite is the 1920’s Murder Mystery Pack , although there’s plenty to choose from.

18) Have a Games Night

An absolute classic that HAS to make the list of fun things to do with friends at home, now then… Is a good old games night with your gals. It’s simple, but fun.

You can go for board games, question games, video games, or even drinking games – if you’re hanging out at home together, before a night out.

You can also spice up any game by throwing in some dares for your friends as forfeits in they lose! (How about that then?!)

The great thing is, there’s plenty of options and you can mix it up each time!

Fun Things To Do With Friends At Home

20) Do a Closet Cleaning Party

Have you been talking about cleaning out your closet for what feels like a lifetime?! Had it on your list of things to do when looking to keep busy at home , but procrastination always beats you?!

Well then, it’s time to grab a little assistance! Get your friends well, and take on your wardrobe together…

They can help to tell you what’s “still hot” and “totally not”, and if you have any cast-off’s they like the look of, you can always bribe them by telling them they can keep them if they help you!

After all, what are friends for right?!

By the end, you’ll have a far clearer wardrobe (ready for your next shopping spree together!) and a pile of clothes you can donate to charity… For your little act of kindness completed for the day!

19) Or a Style Night

If you want to do a little bit different, why not have a ‘style night’?

How this works? You each create different categories. It could be, ‘Summer Look’, ‘Festival Vibes’, ‘Date Night’, ‘Meet The Parents’, ‘Home Comforts’, ‘Going Out Out’ etc.

Prep your looks beforehand then get together. Have some wine, blast some music and you then want to all go into different rooms – get changed at the same time and then come out to see your pal’s outfit choice!

You get chance to ‘pitch’ your look and why you went for what. You can also talk about the kind of trends you do and don’t like at the moment. PLUS, pick some wacky wild-card categories to get some giggles.

If you love fashion, this is one of the most fun things to do with friends at home.

Fun Things To Do With Friends At Home

21) Do a Clothes Swap Night

Does closet cleaning not quite sound enticing enough and a style night a bit too much? Then how about a Clothes Swap Night?

Uh huh, we’ve got alternatives to always help you find the “middle ground!”

Here, you and your friends meet up at one of your homes. You each bring unwanted clothes that you know really will look good – but will just look better on someone else…

Then you make swaps between you all.

It’s a great way to freshen up your wardrobe, without having to spend a penny. And it always proves to be a super fun and exciting night!

22) Do a Makeover Night

Want to feel better after a breakup ? Cheer a friend up? Or perhaps even just feel like YOU again?

Whatever the situation – a makeover night with your friends is often the perfect answer!

Watch hair and makeup tutorials, follow along with them together, or allow your friend to “let loose”, doing your hair and makeup from scratch.

There’s heaps of different ways to go about it, but whichever route you go down, you know you’re guaranteed to have a fun, girly night in together!

Fun Things To Do With Friends At Home

23) Have a Photoshoot

So let’s say you’re looking to re-create yourself , you’ve done a pamper night, style night or makeover night and have played around with different looks…

Then, the next fun mates-night has got to be a photoshoot! In fact, we happen to think this is the ULTIMATE girls night in.

Learn how to feel confident in the way that you look , with the encouragement of your friends, as you pout and pose in front of the camera! Mess around taking cute, funny photos that you can add to your collection around your room.

Best friends are priceless and sometimes we don’t capture enough moments with them.

You can have individual photoshoots (perfect if you’re single and trying to spruce up your dating profile!), or you can have a group photoshoot to get some cute pictures with your friends.

All you need is a selfie tripod with a wireless remote , as the kind of photos you can get on your phone nowadays are still so high quality!

Either way, this is definitely one of our favourite things to do with friends at home, so you just HAVE to give it a go!

24) Create a Scrapbook

Whilst we’re on the topic of photos, creating a scrapbook with your friends is always a fun thing to do together at home.

I mean, how long have you kept your photos all stored up on your phone, and have been meaning to sort through them and get them printed? Well, now’s your time!

Prep before, then bring all your print-outs to your besties, where you can share photos and reminisce together.

It’s a great way to get to know each other better, and a nice, relaxing, evening activity you can do any day, any time.

25) Make Vision Boards Together

Another super unique, yet just as fun, thing to do with friends at home, is to make a vision board together.

This is especially helpful if you’re working through our personal development bucket list to become the best version of you.

It gets you focused, and by sharing your goals with your friends too – they can help to keep you accountable, plus also show their support and encouragement.

26) Write a Best Friend Bucket List

So we all know that having a Singles Bucket List is essential. But how about creating a Best Friend Bucket List too?

That way, no matter what your relationship status, or how life evolves and changes, you’ll always find time to do different things with your mates.

So get together, write out different things you want to do and experience, and come up with a master list that you can then tick off – one by one.

27) Learn a Dance Routine

Have some FUN and get dancing! Depending on what kind of person you are, you can either do this as like a workout and challenge, or just for a bit of a laugh together.

Simply go onto YouTube, find a dance tutorial, learn it with your besties and then you know full well , you’ll end up ‘performing’ it on your next night out!

Go for a classic ‘girl power’ track and make sure you add your own sass to it!

how to spend time with friends

28) Or a Zumba Night

A Zumba night, could also be another alternative… Especially if you’re looking for active things to do with friends at home. Dance around to the beat of the music, guided on a video tutorial.

A workout video is another option, but – for the sake of keeping it fun and fairly manageable – we happen to think Zumba is the best starting point!

29) Have a Yoga Night

Dancing a bit “too much” for you? Looking for some fun things to do with friends at home that are a little more “zen”? Then a yoga night could certainly be an option.

Yoga is great for helping to CALM your mind and feel more emotionally stable .

It’s a great practice to get into, and if you can learn to love it with friends, you may well find it’s a new hobby you then continue.

Yoga also doesn’t need to take up a lot of space, which means it always works at home, no matter what size room you have to work with.

So why not give it a go, as something different to do with friends one of the times?! See, it’s an activity that just may well surprise you!

30) Start a Band Together

Love music? Want another outlet? A different way to express yourself? Then why not make a band with your friends?!

It doesn’t matter what you currently know how to play, or how musical you are (or aren’t!)

You don’t have to do this seriously. It’s just a fun thing to do with friends at home, that also gives you an “excuse” to get together more regularly.

In time, if you’re looking for different places to hang out with friends – you can move it from your home(s), to a studio, church or community centre.

But you’ve got to start somewhere – so why not give it a go?!

Fun Things To Do With Friends At Home

31) Have a Karaoke Night

Next up – we’ve got to throw a karaoke night into the mix, as it is – hands down – one of the most fun things to do with friends at home…

And by having it in the comfort of your own home, you can sing full blast, without having to care what anyone thinks!

Grab yourself a karaoke machine , or better yet – just get some inflatable microphones and get Youtube up on your TV, playing songs with lyrics on the screen.

It’s one of the most popular bachelorette party ideas , but can actually be done anytime, for any occasion, or no occasion at all – if your friends are up for it and just want to have some fun! So test the waters… Throw it out there as a suggestion!

IDEA: Send this article to your pals with no words, just: Number 31? 👀 Next Weekend?! 🤪

32) Drink and Draw

Next up – it’s drink and draw. Well, you can do Drink and Draw… Or Drink and Paint… Or even Drink and Create, even, which is open to ANYTHING!

For instance for a halloween mates date idea , you could try pumpkin carving.

Or for Christmas activities , you could make Christmas decoration.

It can be seasonal, and totally flexible. And that’s part of the fun – deciding what exactly you’ll do!

The main part is that you’re working on something whilst having a chat and a nice little beverage. It just adds a different activity to your usual get-togethers.

This leads me onto our next recommendation…

33) Paint and Prosecco

Paint and Prosecco is another adaption from Drink and Draw… Do you like the alliteration there?! We do! And we love the activity too!

If you’re not much of a painter, grab a cute paint by numbers kit . Or try diamond painting even.

But it’s a fun, classy, therapeutic thing to do at home, and keep doing every time your friends come over – usually for an evening activity to break up the week.

Because hey – midweek date ideas can work well too you know? You can always find time for quality time with friends!

different activities to do with friends

34) Puzzle Night!

Next up, it’s puzzle night, and yes, this is indeed fully deserving of a spot on our list of fun things to do with friends at home. Why? Because it’s DIFFERENT!

Now there’s heaps of different types of puzzles – mathematical puzzles, logic puzzles, word games, the list could go on and on.

But my favourite puzzle for a puzzle night with friends, has to be a classic jigsaw puzzle!

Here, you can take a big one on together, or have little ones you can race to do!

There’s actually plenty of modern, funny jigsaw puzzles that you won’t feel like an O.A.P doing (ha!) Just have a browse and see which ones take your fancy!

35) Do a Psychic Night!

From astrology readings to palm reading, crystal balls to tea leaf reading – there are so many different ways to tell your fortune nowadays.

Whether you’re into this kind of thing or not – there’s no denying – it makes for a great girly evening in with friends.

36) Ask Each Other Questions / Have a Discussions Night

Fancy a bit of quality conversation? Looking for simple things to do with friends at home that are just as fun? Then why not get together for a good old chat!

There are plenty of fun and interesting questions to ask friends , to create HOURS of conversation!

You can also do “Chats About” nights…

Simply pick a topic, swat up on it before, then discuss it. It could be something like self-confidence, financial freedom, equality or even questions about self love .

Go as light-hearted or deep as you like! Or get more specific like, ‘let’s debate solo female travel!’

It’s a fun way to spend the evening and actually helps to bring you even closer, as you get to know each other more and more.

Then, when you really do feel like you know your bestie like the back of your hand, you can then use these “ how well do you know me questions ” and turn it into the ULTIMATE quiz game!

different things to talk to friends about

37) Give a DIY Project A Go Together

Another fun thing to do with friends at home is to take on a DIY project together.

Get some inspiration online… then get cracking together in person! Pick something that really excites you – whether that’s something big or small.

It could be something as little as drink coasters or photo frames; right the way to a new furniture piece for your home.

You can each make the same thing (but different versions to reflect your personality) or team up together to make something mighty for a friend.

The choice is yours, but you’ll never go too far wrong when you’re doing something creative with friends! On a similar note, if you find that you enjoy it…

38) Pottery Painting

Now, crafty afternoon project that that you definitely HAVE to add to your list, is pottery painting!

See, you can grab a pottery painting kit , as soon as the next day with FREE Amazon Prime one-day delivery. (Uh huh, you can do this on a free trial from my link just there too… You can thank me later! 😉)

39) Create an Arts / Crafts Club

If you’re looking for fun things to do with friends at home on a more regular basis, and you found DIY projects enjoyable, you can always create a weekly / fortnightly / monthly craft club!

Here, you’ll work on different things together, or separate things, but at the same time. It’s fun, creative, supportive and inspiring; in all the best ways!

40) Create a Book Club

We’ve very nearly made it to the end of our list for 45 fun things to do with friends at home – so here’s another recommendation that can be a more regular thing… A home book club!

Yes the conversation usually drifts off the book and onto the latest gossip- but there’s almost at least 15 minutes of educated discussion on it!

And it means you always have a new book to read… bonus.

Try one of our best books for single women (whether you’re single or not – they’re incredibly empowering!) Or how about one of the top books for building confidence , if you want to help each other be the REAL you!

I also update my personal reading list every month, so you can follow along and become part of my FREE book club if you want. (We’re all friends here!)

But that’s the best thing about it – you can take your book club whichever route you and your friends want it to go, and have endless options for different things to read and then discuss!

41) Or a Podcast Club

Not much of a reader? Then a podcast club is also an option, for something to set up with friends.

Here, you listen to podcasts (or audiobooks) instead, then meet regularly at one of your homes, to discuss the different ones, on a regular basis.

Learn and grow together. It’s a pretty neat way to spend your time!

42) Have a Movie Night

Next up – it’s a movie night! And, okay, so this might not be the most original but I think it deserves it’s place on the ’45 fun things to do with friends at home’ list because it’s a CLASSIC!

Get your girls around, snuggle up on the sofa with lots of tasty nibbles and watch a movie. You can each take it in turns to pick the movie (the ‘host’ chooses) and then each week, you can have it at someone else’s house to mix it up a bit.

Pick a movie that is ‘SO YOU!’ and see what your friends think.

43) Have a Comedy Night

Laughter is good for you, it’s good for your friends, it’s good for your friendship and it’s good for your SOUL! So instead of watching the standard movie – consider tuning into a comedy roadshow!

Laugh the night away, with themed comedy night with your friends at home.

It’s the perfect answer if your friend is struggling to get over their ex , or currently going through relationship issues and just wants to SWITCH OFF for a little while.

It’s a distraction… But the best kind. And one which makes everyone feel good, regardless.

Fun Things To Do With Friends At Home

44) Binge Watch a TV Series

Now let’s not forget – binge watching a tv series can make for another good night with friends at home, if you’re looking to really get into something gritty!

45) Switch Off With S’mores Indoors, or Outdoors

Or, if you’re really wanting to switch off – forget the TV and opt to make S’Mores, indoors or outdoors.

This is one of our favourite free date ideas at home , but it’s also something you can do with friends too, of course. In fact, when my friends and I did it, it was one of the most memorable girly nights of all time.

Why? Because it’s DIFFERENT! You also get the cuteness, the quality time, interesting conversation and of course – the most delicious nibbles.

And with both an outdoor fire pit and a mini indoor fire pit , you have the versatility to do it whatever the weather. (Uh huh, it’s better to be well prepared and I guarantee you – these little beauties will certainly get their use!)

That’s All For This One

So there we have it – 45+ fun things to do with friends at home to fill you with ideas and inspiration.

Remember – don’t just read this… But take action. Commit by scheduling one new thing into your diary today, with something different you can all do in the next week / month.

There’s nothing better than hanging out with your friends...but what if you can’t think of something fun to do together? Fortunately, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a great time, and there are plenty of options to keep everyone entertained. Whether you want to stay inside or explore your city, we’re providing a comprehensive list of activities to pass the time (and bond with your friends).

Things You Should Know

  • Staying inside doesn’t have to be boring—hold a movie marathon, organize a friendly bake-off, or host an epic karaoke night with your friends.
  • If everyone wants to get out of the house, visit your local museum, browse thrift stores, or try the latest restaurant in town.
  • For a fun and free experience, learn a viral TikTok dance, write a creative story together, or walk to a park you’ve never been to before.

Have a movie marathon.

Watch your favorite flicks to keep everyone entertained.

  • For the ultimate movie marathon, watch a major film franchise like James Bond , Harry Potter , or Lord of the Rings . Or, go through your favorite actor’s filmography.
  • Alternatively, binge an entire TV show to watch the time fly—just be sure to choose a series with shorter episodes so you can get through the entire season.
  • If you don’t have an account for a streaming service, you can always sign up for a free trial on Hulu, Showtime, or Amazon Prime.

Go for a walk.

Get out of the house and stroll around town together.

  • To switch up your environment, walk to a park you’ve never been to before (and be sure to take some photos of the nature surrounding you). [1] X Research source
  • Or, take a walk downtown and look at the local stores and restaurants your city has to offer.
  • If walking isn’t quite your style, go for a bike ride on a nearby nature trail.

Take a quiz online.

Kill some time and learn something new with quizzes.

  • Take a best friend quiz to see if you’re as close as you think. Or, take a take a zodiac sign quiz to determine which sign really describes you.

Throw a music-listening party.

Discover new music with your pals.

  • If you don’t know what to play, turn on a new album, and listen to it from start to finish.
  • Or, create a collaborative playlist beforehand and ask everyone to add their favorite songs.

wikiHow Quiz: What Should I Do?

Who do you spend the most time with.

Myself or a couple of close friends.

Friends with similar interests.

Friends who can keep up with me.

Friends, family, acquaintances—whoever is around.

Host a karaoke night at home.

Let loose with your friends by showing off your vocals.

  • If you don’t want to belt an entire song, play a game of Song Association: choose a random word and give your friend 10 seconds to sing a snippet of any song with that word in it.

Host a spa night.

Relax and unwind by pampering yourselves.

  • Give your friend a neck massage to relieve any built-up stress: use long, light strokes on the sides of their neck, and apply focused pressure on tension spots.
  • For glowing skin, give yourself a facial with a store-bought mask, or make an all-natural face mask with different ingredients in your kitchen.

Plan a game night.

Play board games to unleash everyone’s competitive side.

  • If you don’t have any board games nearby, grab a pair of headphones and do the whisper challenge —it’s guaranteed to make everyone burst out with laughter.

This new version offers an experience much closer to the original board game and can be played remotely with friends by adding them through your phone or by connecting the app to your Facebook account.

Taylor Swift breaks concert crowd record in Stockholm with Eras Tour

with tour friends

STOCKHOLM — Taylor Swift played her very first show in Sweden and said fans broke the concert attendance record at Friends Arena.

"My mind is absolutely blown for several reasons looking at this crowd tonight," said the Eras Tour star.

"First of which is that I have never gotten to play a show in Stockholm before, and my first show looks like this." The crowd erupted and Swift added, "You have made this the highest attended show ever in this stadium."

Swift didn't say how many fans were there, but the stadium's website says its concert capacity is "60,000 people, depending on position and layout of the stage."

Fans did not spot Swift's boyfriend, Travis Kelce, in the crowd after the tight end went to her final show in Paris, which was her 87th Eras Tour performance (his Kansas City Chiefs number is 87). The football player is hosting a music festival, Kelce Jam , Saturday night in Bonner Springs, Kansas.

The city of Stockholm is the latest stop on her blockbuster three-plus-hour show to rename itself — to Swiftholm —following Glendale's "Swift City," Minneapolis's "Swiftie-apolis" and Santa Clara's "Swiftie Clara."

Swift will perform three nights in Friends Arena before heading to Lisbon, Portugal.

Dear Annie: What’s a group of friends supposed to do when Male 1 stops talking to Male 2?

  • Published: May. 18, 2024, 5:30 p.m.

'Dear Annie' columnist Annie Lane

Annie Lane writes the Dear Annie advice column. Creators.com

DEAR ANNIE: My husband and I are senior citizens. We are close friends with two other couples; we all have other friends, but these four people in particular have been our core group for years.

Over the last few weeks, male friend No. 1 has stopped talking to our male friend No. 2. No. 1 has totally stopped answering texts and calls from No. 2. If my husband or I text No. 1, he will answer but will not join us if we invite him and his wife to a group gathering. He just says they are staying in.

No. 2 has texted No. 1 and apologized for whatever it was he did with still no answer. It puts me and my husband in a weird middle position and we just don’t know what to do. We stopped by No. 1′s house today and visited with him as we always have, so we don’t think the problem is with us.

We’ve always had so much fun together and hate to see this happen, especially this late in life. Any suggestions? -- In Between Friends

DEAR IN BETWEEN: Since male friend No. 1 is responsive to you and your husband, perhaps a gentle, direct conversation is in order. You could say that you’ve noticed the distance between him and friend No. 2 and that you’re all missing the group’s usual camaraderie. Avoid pressing him for details or to reconcile immediately, but let him know the group values his presence and is there if he wants to talk.

Meanwhile, continue to support both friends individually. You can invite them to gatherings separately, ensuring you maintain both relationships without forcing a confrontation before they are ready. It’s important to respect the boundaries that friend No. 1 is setting, while also giving both parties the space and time they may need to resolve their issues. Sometimes, just knowing that mutual friends are there for support, without pressure, can be comforting in itself.

Send your questions for Annie Lane to [email protected] .

A bloody nose, a last hurrah for friends, and more prom memories you shared with us

In 2010, Karley Ford went to her senior prom with her best friends instead of a date. Karley Ford hide caption

In 2010, Karley Ford went to her senior prom with her best friends instead of a date.

It's prom season, and we asked you to share stories from that special night, whether you went last year or decades ago.

We received many heartwarming stories about going to prom with friends, future spouses and high school sweethearts.

Some people told us they didn't go to prom at all — or didn't go with a date. Some people learned big lessons at their prom, while others had unforgettable mishaps.

Here are some of the memories you shared with us. And remember that you can participate in future callouts by signing up for NPR's Up First newsletter .

Day-of mishaps didn't stop the celebrations

Marshall Metcalf from Taylorville, Ill. recalls how, after walking into his prom, his "nose exploded in a spontaneous fountain of blood."

It was "Kind of like Footloose, without the fighting or dancing. Just an enormous nosebleed, all down the white rented shirt," Metcalf wrote. "I dove into the bathroom to clean up, terribly embarrassed. But to my great surprise no one commented on it the rest of the night. Guess my classmates weren't that bad after all."

Anthony Rodas from Wisconsin almost crashed his car when his date mentioned she was dating someone else. "On the way there, she nonchalantly mentions, 'Oh, by the way, that guy is my boyfriend.' I drove through a stop sign — which has flashing red lights below the sign as well as little LEDs around the signs themselves, the least excusable stop sign to run — as I am processing what had just happened," Rodas wrote. His date was a little startled and concerned, but no one was hurt and they made it safely to prom. "It was rather awkward, and we spent a good portion of the prom doing our own things, but we did dance to a few songs and still ended up having a good time," Rodas wrote.

Jessica Reitano also ended up marrying her prom date. In 1990, her and her now husband crashed a prom when she came back home from college. Jessica Reitano hide caption

Jessica Reitano also ended up marrying her prom date. In 1990, her and her now husband crashed a prom when she came back home from college.

Josh Waters in Georgia wrote that his "prom date was so mad at me because I refused to wait in line for pictures right when we got there."

After three hours of dancing to Boyz II Men, the pair looked "a sweaty mess. However, it must not have made her that mad," Waters wrote. "We just celebrated 16 years of marriage."

Prom night was clouded by difficult times, personal and political, for some

Robin Dias of Scottsdale, Ariz. went to prom in Darien, Conn. in 1968, as unrest around the Vietnam War reached its peak. The spring was fraught with protests, political unrest and the assassinations of two of America's most high profile leaders, Martin Luther King and Robert F Kennedy. Dias wrote that "It almost seemed wrong to want to dress like a princess at a ball when there was so much turmoil," Dias wrote.

She recalled her mother standing in her bedroom, ironing while the TV blared with the news of the MLK funeral march. Dias' mother sighed, and said aloud, "It's all so terrible. But I really hope the school won't cancel the proms this spring. You kids still deserve to have your Prom Night."

Casey Promise Thompson was one of the only openly gay students at her prom night in her small town in Tennessee.

"I walked in, nervous of people's reactions to me wearing a tux. I had lived a life of being severely bullied and not being the best at making friends. But I had evolved over time and tried to learn to connect to others through art," Thompson wrote to us.

She would give away her doodles and sketches all the time. She estimates she probably gave away hundreds of drawings. So, it came as no surprise that by senior year, she was voted "Most Talented" by her classmates.

Of course, this would mean that she would have to get on stage at prom and accept her award with all the other superlatives. "I was immediately nervous and sick to my stomach," she wrote. "Instead of the expected cold shoulder and fear of being laughed at, they all smiled and welcomed me."

Thompson learned an important lesson that day: "It suddenly dawned on me that my art had made an impact. Everyone did know who I was. I had actually been a popular kid my Senior year and I didn't even know it. My brain had built up this idea that no one liked me all of these years, and right before I graduated high school...I finally learned that people actually did respect and appreciate me. My art has made me into someone."

Romantic dates weren't always the focus of prom

Karley Ford in Colorado told us that she "had the worst luck with getting dates to... literally any dance. I was just perpetually single. Prom was no exception. Junior prom, my date got swine flu. Senior prom, my date decided to go with someone else– one week – before prom. I had already gotten his boutonniere in 2010.

At senior prom, Ford said she expected to be depressed because she was going alone. One of her good friends asked Ford to join her as her "date" a couple days before. The "best thing" for Ford was that the memory was preserved in a very special photo (featured above).

"We had been friends since grade school, and it was one of the last hurrahs together before going off to college or wherever the wind took us," Ford wrote. "Despite me not having a date, my childhood friends all rallied together, made sure that I had reasons to smile and reminded me that I am never alone (and I didn't need a stinkin' date)."

Going with a friend also made things 10 times more fun for Laura Popielski in Washington D.C. "My best friend and I decided to go to prom months before the date. He was gay and I was a bit of a wallflower when it came to dating/boys so it made good sense to go together," Popielski wrote. "Nine years later, he passed away and now it's been ten years since that... and I still remember how fun it was to collaborate with him, how we were the perfect pair."

Some who didn't attend prom are stamping their own traditions on the day

Ananya Paul grew up in India and never went to prom. Now in California, she "will be making memories when my rising Junior wears a saree to her prom. Our children take pride in celebrating and showcasing their culture." Paul wrote that it is "heartening" to see more students wear traditional attire like sarees or lehengas to prom in recent years.

"What's also intriguing is how my daughter has chosen to go to prom with her girlfriends rather than a date. It speaks volumes about the evolving dynamics of friendship and independence among today's youth," Paul wrote. "It's these unique cultural shifts and personal choices that make each prom season special and memorable in its own way."

Chad Campbell contributed production to the audio version of this story and Ally Schweitzer edited. The digital version was edited by Obed Manuel.

Here's the Discord Changelog from May 13, 2024. You can also find the most recent Changelog in the Discord app under Settings > What's New .

with tour friends

Discord turns 9 this May! And birthdays mean presents… but for YOU. 🫵

Over the next nine days, we’ll be giving away one-of-a-kind prizes and stuff that makes gaming with your friends on Discord way more fun. Keep an eye out on our social media accounts such as X ( US , Japan , France ) and Instagram !

We also brought you gifts * right here, right now* in the form of new ways to spend time with your friends and bug fixes to make that time as frictionless as possible. Read on to see what’s new!

More Fun, During and After The Call

  • You can now play an Activity within text channels in servers. If you’re not feeling like being in Voice but still want to get a few rounds of Blazing 8s in with your friends, we’ve got you covered. Desktop users can use the “+” button in text channels, and mobile peeps can press the shiny new button that we’re about to shout out below ( get ready for it ):
  • Access Apps on mobile with an all-new “Shapes” button. It’s your one-stop-shop for all your Apps and Activities, right on your mobile chat bar. Easily use App commands with taps instead of typing — no need to worry about which shape goes in the square hole. Learn more here . ‍
  • Ask what @everyone thinks with Polls. Use Polls to decide what to play, ask your burning and benign questions, or decide if you should chomp an entire jalapeno in one bite! Use the previously-mentioned “+” button to create Polls. +1 to the Plus Button. ‍
  • On desktop, pop-up profiles now display someone’s mutual servers and friends. Now it’s just a single click to see which mutuals you share with someone, helping make new connections easier. Also helpful for determining which server someone’s asking for mod help in.

More Fixes, Less Crashes

  • Bluetooth devices now connect properly when you join a call. Previously, if you joined a call and turned on your Bluetooth headphones, your call wouldn't swap to your newly connected device properly. This now just works, meaning less talking into a device that wasn’t even working.
  • Permission to Poll: Granted.  Tons of work goes into managing servers. It’s important to have the right tools—and permissions—to do so. Creating Polls in servers is now tied to a new “Create Polls” permission. Save it for just moderators, or let everyone use ‘em! ‍
  • Mobile is better at not using battery when it doesn’t need to. Mobile now knows to conserve resources when the app isn’t detecting anyone talking or you’re deafened in a Voice call, letting the app save on battery. Rejoice, VC sleepers!  ‍
  • Crashes are a bummer. Android does that less now. Our expert dev team resolved a few long-standing Android crashes that were particularly tricky to track down. These fixes reduced the platform's crash rate by over a third — 37% to be precise! /adjusts glasses

P.S. If you love reading about stuff like Electron updates, unicode rendering fixes, and tangible reductions in crash rates shown in percentages, you’re in luck: our Engineering team has collected the latest technical fixes to show how they’re always making Discord better.
