Mayor of Chicago Patrick Eugene Prendergast issued a proclamation approving the use of fireworks to celebrate the World’s Colombian Exposition and to celebrate the nation’s 117th Independence Day. • Yes. All boats have a full bar available onboard with cocktails, wine, craft beer, water, cold brew and more, as well as locally sourced snacks available for purchase.
• What sets your tours apart from the others?

We are the only tour that partners with the Chicago Architecture Center to offer the official Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise aboard Chicago's First Lady. All of our tours are given by experienced, volunteer docents who receive hundreds of hours of training from the Chicago Architecture Center before guiding the river cruise tour.

• How long is the tour?
• Each tour is 90 minutes.
• Do I need to buy tickets in advance?

Advance reservations are recommended as many tours sell out.

• Is there assigned seating?

All seating is general admission, though proper distancing measures are put in place to ensure the safety of each party outside of their own groups, per city ordinances. There is enough seating for all guests to have a seat outside. While seat numbers are printed on the tickets, you can ignore these as they are not valid.

• Are tours offered in any languages other than English?

We are happy to offer free foreign language audio guides in Spanish, French, Japanese and Korean. Scan the QR code onboard for instructions. Mobile data for app download required.

• Do I have to print my tickets?
• You do not have to print your tickets. You can show your mobile ticket to our dock attendant with your smartphone, or you can have your tickets printed at the dockside will call window (be sure to bring a photo ID and your confirmation number).
• Does the boat go on the lake?

No, the tour is only on the Chicago River. If you’d like to take a lake tour, please check out our sister cruise line Mercury, Chicago’s Skyline Cruiseline .

• Are there restrooms onboard?

Yes, all the boats have restrooms onboard. There are also wheelchair accessible bathrooms on the Classic Lady, Leading Lady, and Emerald Lady. Please note: the restrooms close 15 minutes before the end of the tour for safety reasons.

• Can I bring luggage onboard?
• Due to security reasons, luggage cannot be brought onboard. There is not an area to store your luggage dockside either. We recommend having your hotel hold your luggage.
• Can I bring a stroller onboard?
• Yes, you can bring a stroller onboard. Children must be removed from strollers before boarding. Strollers will be folded and stored in the salon during the cruise.
• Are there changing tables onboard?

The Classic Lady, Leading Lady, and Emerald Lady have changing tables onboard in the family restroom. The Little Lady, Fair Lady, and First Lady do not have changing tables onboard.

• Are dogs allowed onboard?

Only service dogs are allowed onboard. Our sister company, Mercury , offers the popular Canine Cruise on summer weekends.

• How can I get to your dock without using stairs?

There are two ways to reach our dock along Chicago’s Riverwalk without using stairs: 1. On foot via the ramp located on Wacker Drive at State Street. 2. Vehicle drop-off area on Lower Wacker Drive. Visit our location page for more information.

• Can I trade my tickets for a different date/time?
• No, all tickets are nonrefundable and nonexchangeable.
• Do you cruise rain or shine?
• Yes, we cruise rain or shine. All the boats have two levels – the top deck is open-air, and the lower deck is an enclosed, climate-controlled salon. Each salon is surrounded by large windows so you can stay comfortable while still taking in the magnificent views. Tour commentary is broadcast over speakers on both levels.
• Are the boats wheelchair accessible?

Chicago's Leading Lady, Chicago’s Classic Lady, and Chicago's Emerald Lady are wheelchair-accessible. These vessels cruise at the 9am, 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 5pm departure times. When boarding, guests cross two ramps and enter through a 36-inch-wide opening (doorway). Crew members will assist in guiding the wheelchair across the gangway. Please present yourself to our staff if you prefer to board before general boarding starts. Guests unable to climb stairs to the upper deck may choose to sit in the open-air bow or the enclosed, climate-controlled salon with large windows. For safety reasons, motorized scooters and electric wheelchairs cannot be accommodated. Guests who are able to transfer may use the company's manual wheelchair based on availability. I had a ton of fun with the guides as they offered trivia about the various structures, which also seemed to bring the entire group together nicely.

Luckily for me, it was perfect weather when we went, so we were also able to enjoy the unreal vistas from the uncovered deck. Passing by Navy Pier and being able to hear the happy voices and laughs of visitors as we passed by was pretty enjoyable, too.

Overall, this is a must-do on any visit to Chicago if you’re serious about learning more about its architectural significance throughout the centuries.

875 North Michigan Avenue : Also known by its former name, the John Hancock Center, this 1,128-foot-tall skyscraper is a striking example of structural expressionism, with its X-shaped braces and tapered shape. It has a 360-degree observation deck, a restaurant, and a lounge on the 94th to 96th floors.

Aon Center : This 1,136-foot-tall office tower is clad in white granite and has a minimalist appearance. It was originally covered in marble, but it had to be replaced due to safety issues. It is planning to add an observatory and a glass elevator on its south facade.

Wrigley Building : This elegant building consists of two towers connected by walkways and is inspired by the Giralda tower of Seville Cathedral. The clock tower and terra-cotta facade are lit up at night. It was ahead of its time being the first air-conditioned office building in Chicago.

The Rookery : It is one of the oldest standing skyscrapers in Chicago and a great example of design from the Chicago School of architecture. It has a load-bearing masonry exterior and a steel frame interior. It also has a stunning two-story lobby that was remodeled by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1905.

Aqua Tower : This modern skyscraper is known for its undulating balconies that create a wave-like effect. It is designed by Jeanne Gang, one of Chicago’s most prominent architects. It is currently a mixed use building with a mixture of apartments, a hotel, offices and retail.

We’ll pass by well-known structures like the Wrigley Building —a terra-cotta building inspired by the Seville Cathedral’s bell tower —as well as modern additions like Trump Tower. Even if you’re not an architecture buff, you’ll enjoy learning about how Chicago’s construction goes hand in hand with its history. Enjoy our 90-minute architecture boat ride that will start at our docking location and take you to all 3 parts of the river. We begin at the “Summer of George” docks, travel the main branch up to the river locks, via the north branch to Goose Island, and down the south branch to Chinatown before returning to the starting point.

Our dock is located at the River City Marina at 900 S Wells St, Chicago, IL 60607 . To get here, guests need to head south on Wells Street and enter through the parking lot behind the River City condominium building. The parking lot is located across from the soccer field on 9th Street and Wells. Please note that you do NOT need to go into the building to find us. Once you arrive, we will complete your registration in the parking lot before embarking. Please note that the cruise starts and finishes at this location.

One of the perks of booking an architecture boat cruise with Tours & Boats is that parking is relatively easy to find! There is a parking lot located at the marina , and it costs around $10 . For more information, please see our detailed guide here . However, please note that it is possible for the parking lot to fill up early, and we are not responsible in the event that you are unable to find a spot . For this reason, we recommend arriving early so that you can find alternate parking, should the need arise.

If the date you want is not listed on the calendar, this means our boat is reserved for a private event. However, we do sometimes add new cruise dates or times if an opening becomes available, so please check back often.

Yes. Even though children age 3 and under are free, you need to register them for a ticket. This is because the Coast Guard counts all human passengers on the boat.

Are the tour boats covered for guests who need shelter from the cold or rain?

The boat I was on had an open top and a covered second floor. The second floor had the bathrooms and bar.

Fantastic, must do river tour. Very knowledgeable guide. She knew about every building on the river and had lots of interesting stories to share. The 90 minutes flew by!

Woo-hoo...REVIEW #7,000! That's a lot of typing and picture snapping on a smartphone for nearly two decades, and there's always more to Yelp judging from my endless backlog. I decided to reserve this milestone review for what I consider the essential tour of an inarguably great city. This is one of several companies that provide the Chicago River boat cruises. In fact, I went on the Wendella Tour Boats several years ago in the winter and loved it. I thought it would be great to go on another one on a sunny day. For approximately $58 per person, a true bargain, we were afforded a ninety-minute tour going up and down the river narrated by a local historian Ed who turned out to be a cello alumnus of the University of Chicago. He was informative and entertaining as the unique view from the open boat allowed Jamie W. and me to appreciate Chicago's architectural greatness. Landmark buildings abound with memorable sights such as Marina City, The Wrigley Building,?Merchandise Mart. Sears (now Willis) Tower, Lakepoint Tower. Oh yes, there was the Trump International Hotel with his name spelled out for all to see and genuflect. Yeah, right. RELATED - Exploring Chicago? There are several river boat tour companies to choose from, but this is THE one to go with. I had no regrets at all. This one is not overly crowded like some of the boats on the river can be. The engine noise is also a lot quieter on this one. This is very important when it comes to trying to hear what your tour guide is talking about. Lemonade, water, and soft drinks are complimentary. Adult beverages are available for an additional fee. And, yes, they take credit/debit cards. Pro Tip: sit in the middle of the boat - it makes it easier to see both sides of the buildings along the river.

This was an extremely entertaining and educational boat tour. This is the original tour that is also completely dedicated to Chicago architecture and uses the proceeds to better Chicago. The tour guide was very good and donates her time to do this. This is the tour you should take. :)

Amazing!! Our tour guide was funny and not boring. We learned so much history about Chicago! 6:45 was the perfect time to go, we got to see the sun set and then all the buildings lit up. Stunning views.

Visiting Chicago, I knew the architecture tour was a must-do activity during my trip. The booking process online was quick and easy. The cost was on the pricey side of $54, but I felt that it was reasonable considering all it comes with. The boarding onto the boat was fairly quick. Once on the boat, you can choose to sit on the top deck outside or the bottom deck that is inside. We first chose to sit on top but made our way inside since it was a cold November day. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, spitting out endless facts and dates about the buildings. However, I do think the microphone needs to be louder for everyone to hear clearly. I would definitely recommend this tour for anyone visiting Chicago. But if you're visiting past October, maybe hold off until the weather is warmer.

I recommend using ParkWhiz to find a spot downtown or before a Cubs game. If you do that, this place is pretty easy to get to. It was a fun and interesting way to spend the afternoon. I recommend sitting on the right (starboard) side of the boat, because the tour is generally looking over the left side of the boat. The guy was funny and clearly knew his stuff.

We had a full day to kill in Chicago prior to our evening flight. What better way to spend it than on a 90-minute river, learning about and admiring the city's architecture! The boat had ample seating on the top deck, but without any shade. (Don't forget your broad spectrum sunscreen!) Both sides of the boat have seating, where you can find some shade. There is seating indoors, near the beverage and snack bar. There was plenty to see on both sides of the boat. If you sit on the starboard side, it's easier to follow along with the tour narration. The tour guide was engaging and entertaining and had an appropriate amount of Bad Dad jokes. Next time, I want to take a night tour! I bet the lights of the city are amazing from the river.

One of my favorite activities during my first visit to Chicago! We opted for the 45 minute tour and by the end I wish we had done the longer one. Our tour guide, Todd, was HILARIOUS. Our boat seemed like a tough crowd though but he had me laughing through all his jokes. But he was also very knowledgeable about the buildings and history of Chicago and made the information fun to take in. Definitely recommend doing this but hopefully you catch great weather like we did.
