High School Sports | Downingtown East slugs three homers to beat Council Rock South in District 1 Class 6A softball quarterfinal

UPPER DUBLIN — Four years ago, this moment might have seemed impossible. Pennsbury won just three games, the program’s lowest finish ever. On Thursday night, the top-seeded — and undefeated — Falcons beat No. 2 Pennridge 3-1 (25-17, 12-25, 25-18, 25-15) to capture the District 1-3A championship at Upper Dublin High School. “This biggest thing is our seniors,” Pennsbury coach Justin Fee said. “When they were freshmen, it was the worst season in Pennsbury history. I wasn’t sure what to do. It was coming off of COVID. It’s been a slow, long rebuilding process, and it’s awesome to see these […]

Baseball: Highlights from the opening round of the state tournament in North Jersey

Due to several weather postponements, the opening round of the NJSIAA baseball tournament now wraps up on Friday.

Here is a group-by-group look at which teams prevailed to reach the sectional quarterfinals, which will be held Tuesday for Non-Public schools and Wednesday for the public groups.

Check back throughout the first round for updated highlights.

North 1, Group 1

GAME OF THE DAY: (8) New Milford def. (9) Lenape Valley, 5-2 (Thursday) — The Knights broke a 2-all tie with a three-run sixth to earn a quarterfinal trip to top-seeded Pompton Lakes. Liam Block had a 4-for-4 day with an RBI and a run scored, and Derek Deleon tossed a three-hitter.

TOP PERFORMERS:

► Senior lefty Tyler Benway fired a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and drove in two runs to boost Pompton Lakes past No. 16 Butler, 5-1.

► Senior 3B Rocco D’Amico finished 2-for-3 with a homer and four runs batted in to key No. 6 Hasbrouck Heights’ 7-4 victory over Park Ridge. The Aviators will visit No. 3 Pequannock, the defending sectional champ, in the quarterfinals.

► Pequannock will have plenty of Morris County company, after two of the top four seeds were eliminated by Morris squads Friday. No. 15 Mountain Lakes stunned No. 2 Emerson, 6-4, using a three-run top of the seventh, while No. 13 Kinnelon edged No. 4 Midland Park, 3-2.

Baseball state tournament: Live brackets from every section in North Jersey

North 2, Group 1

TOP PERFORMERS: No. 3 Wood-Ridge was the lone North Jersey team to survive this bracket's opening round, and it did so thanks in part to the bats of Jake Wall (1-for-3, double) and Lucas Mendoza (2-for-4, 2 runs), each of whom drove in three during Wednesday's 10-0 victory over Belvidere. The Blue Devils host No. 6 Jonathan Dayton of Springfield next.

North 1, Group 2

GAME OF THE DAY: (1) Glen Rock def. (16) West Milford, 5-4 (Thursday) — The Panthers survived a major upset by walking it off with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Junior Nick Atme (7 IP, 3 ER, 2 K) improved to 7-0 with his fourth complete game of the season and went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs scored.

► Senior Nick Sendrowski finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three driven in to help No. 6 Indian Hills dispatch Vernon, 8-1, on Friday. That sets up a fourth meeting of the season between the Braves and No. 3 Westwood, which won two of the first three. The Cardinals opened the playoffs with a five-inning, 13-3 rout of River Dell behind Joe Klein's 4-for-4 outing.

► Senior Matt Tortora finished with two hits and four runs batted in to power No. 3 Pascack Hills past Demarest, 13-1 in five innings, and set up a home quarterfinal against No. 6 High Point.

► Junior lefty JT Deriso allowed one unearned run over 6⅓ to lead No. 8 Pascack Valley past Parsippany Hills on Wednesday, 5-1, and set up a quarterfinal trip to Glen Rock.

► Lakeland senior RHP Matt Nicholson (5-2) worked around six walks to fire a two-hit shutout against Jefferson Township, 6-0. The No. 7 Lancers visit No. 2 Ramsey next.

North 2, Group 2

GAME OF THE DAY: (10) Rutherford def. (7) Bernards, 6-4 (9 innings; Wednesday) — Last year’s sectional runner-up found itself in an unfamiliar spot having to go on the road in the first round Wednesday. The Bulldogs pulled through anyway, tying the game at 4 in the top of the seventh before scoring two in the ninth.

Junior Chris Gioia pitched 4⅔ innings of one-hit relief to help send Rutherford into the quarterfinals at No. 2 Madison. It will be the teams’ fourth playoff meeting in six years.

► Becton’s Justin Diez drove in three runs, and Owen DeKoyer did not allow an earned run in a complete-game victory, 10-2, over McNair Academic on Thursday. The No. 4 Wildcats will host neighbor Lyndhurst in the quarterfinals.

► Max Gonzalez and Matteo Morelli each drove in two during a four-run first that sent No. 5 Lyndhurst past No. 12 Parsippany, 4-1

► No. 6 Leonia advanced thanks in part to a four-run sixth in a 4-3 win over Voorhees. Senior Yutaka Uchida pitched the first 6⅓ innings for the win, with Ryan Calderaro getting the final two outs for the save.

► Junior Jake Delaney threw a five-inning no-hitter with 11 strikeouts in No. 1 Passaic Valley’s 11-0 win over Ridgefield/Palisades Park on Wednesday. The Hornets host their namesakes from Hanover Park in the quarterfinals.

North 1, Group 3

GAME OF THE DAY: (4) Wayne Hills def. (13) Paramus, 5-1: Junior Casey Baratta had three hits and an RBI and the Patriots (16-10) pulled away with a three-run fifth. Junior Chris Pellegrino had two hits and an RBI, and senior Sal Cifalino had two hits and a run to snap a five-game losing streak. Senior Dean Qira allowed four hits, two walks, struck out 12 and did not allow an earned run over six innings. They host No. 5 Roxbury in Wednesday's quarterfinals.

► Sophomore Max Garcia had two hits, three runs and two RBIs and No. 9 Old Tappan (14-12) avenged two regular-season losses with a 10-3 win over No. 8 Bergenfield. Sophomore Anthony Onnembo added two hits and three RBIs for the Golden Knights (14-12). They play Wednesday’s quarterfinal at top-seeded Morris Knolls.

North 1, Group 4

GAME OF THE DAY: (10) Fair Lawn def. (7) Union City, 2-0 (Thursday) — Senior Josh Feuerstein threw a 72-pitch complete game shutout, allowing only four baserunners and three hits while inducing two double plays. Matt Dunn drove in Ryan Perry with two outs in the top of the sixth for the first run, and Tyler Tsai plated Travis Colaianni with an insurance run in the 7th.

► Senior Vincent Luther tossed a two-hitter with one walk and eight strikeouts, leading No. 1 Ridgewood to a five-inning shutout of Memorial (West New York). Senior Owen Laffey had two hits, two runs scored and three RBI in the Maroons' 10-0 win, which punched their ticket to host No. 8 North Bergen in the quarterfinals.

► Senior Alex Bulger tossed a two-hitter with no walks and nine strikeouts to lead No. 2 Hackensack (18-10) to a 4-0 win over No. 15 Bloomfield. Senior Joe Farrington homered for the Comets, who next host No. 10 Fair Lawn.

North Non-Public A

LYNDHURST – Bergen Catholic’s dramatic turnaround now features a state tournament win, significant for a program whose disappointing first month prevented a bid to the Bergen County tournament.

The Crusaders opened the North Non-Public A baseball tournament with a 9-6 victory over St. Peter’s Prep on Wednesday at Breslin Field, and they advance to Tuesday’s quarterfinal at top-seeded rival St. Joseph.

Junior Jamie Zee’s three-run triple propelled eighth-seeded Bergen Catholic (15-10-1). Zee’s first-pitch smash to right-center came with two outs and gave the Crusaders a 6-3 lead in the middle of an eight-run rally that provided a 9-3 advantage.

“You always love to be in moments like that,” said Zee, who flied out to left in his first at-bat. “So I just put a smile on my face and I was thinking, ‘It’s the same bat, the same ball, just go swing it.’ And I got my pitch and I didn’t miss it.”

Bergen Catholic’s front of the order was stellar. Zee, batting second, was 3 for 4, with a run and three RBIs. Sophomore leadoff hitter Petros Rouggeris had three hits and scored twice. Junior cleanup hitter Tyler Yoo had three hits, including two in the fourth, and he scored two of his three runs during that eight-run rally.

“We had a chance to put our tail between our legs, or we had a chance to turn it around,” Bergen Catholic coach Bob Muggeo said, referring to a 6-9-1 start. “And I’m so proud of our guys. We’ve won 11 of our last 13 games and we’ve turned our season around.”

Bergen Catholic, playing its third game in three days, needed every last run, because it ran out of pitchers. Senior Daniel Spierer, making his season debut on the mound, earned the save with a bases-loaded, game-ending strikeout. Spierer replaced sophomore reliever Joaquin Rivera, who replaced senior starter and winner Luke Dellentash.

“Never take anything for granted,” said Muggeo, whose Crusaders lost back-to-back games to St. Joseph last month. “I like the inning where we put a bunch of crooked numbers on the board. Jamie came up with the bases-loaded triple, and we were able to extend it a little. And at the end, we were just hanging on.”

GAME OF THE DAY(S): (6) Dwight-Englewood 3, (11) Paramus Catholic 2 (13 innings) — This clash started on Wednesday and went 12 before being suspended due to darkness. Dwight-Englewood used both of its aces, starting lefty Rhys Bowie (7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 17 K) before bringing in right-hander Everett Garber (5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K).

Noah Fisher singled home the tying run in the bottom of the ninth after Paramus Catholic had taken a 2-1 lead in the top half. When the game resumed Thursday, Matthew Civan pitched a hitless top of the 13th to set up the Bulldogs for a literal walk-off win ‐ Austin Kim scored on a bases-loaded walk to end it.

► Five different DePaul players homered in the No. 5 Spartan's five-inning, 15-1 win over Newark Academy: Jason Amalbert (3 RBI), J.C. Pacheco (3), Derek Brand (2), Christopher Marano (2) and Liam Riley (2). DePaul visits No. 4 Delbarton on Tuesday.

'We’re leaving a legacy.' Heritage Christian wins third straight baseball sectional title.

INDIANAPOLIS – After Heritage Christian defeated second-ranked Triton Central in the Class 2A Sectional 42 championship Monday at Park Tudor, senior left fielder Ryan Williams caught up with his family and teammates to celebrate his third sectional title in as many seasons.

Williams had dirt and mud on the front and back of his white baseball pants, dirt on his white jersey, mud on his right forearm and a heavy bandage on his left index finger.

In the top of the fifth inning with one out, Triton Central freshman third baseman Kellan Dishman hit a high fly ball deep to left field. Williams ranged back for the catch, crashing through the fence to make the out.

IHSAA baseball sectional scores: See which Indy-area teams are headed to regionals

Not into the fence — through it.

“At that moment I was thinking, ‘I'm either gonna run into the fence and miss it, or I'm gonna come out with the catch,’” the Eagles senior said.

Just one inning prior, Williams tried to dive for a line drive, missing the catch and allowing two Triton Central runners to score. On that play, Williams sliced one of his fingers open and momentarily stopped play.

“I just didn't want to leave my team behind when I felt like I could push through a little bit,” he said.

Heritage Christian coach Dan Ambrose said no one on the Eagles roster exemplifies the character of the team more than Williams. Ambrose thought back to a team meeting held in fall 2023.

During this gathering, Ambrose prompted the juniors and seniors to come up with three bullet points to describe the Heritage Christian baseball culture.

▶ The little things.

▶ The Ryan Williams Effect.

“Even though he's one of, if not the best player on our team, it's always about everybody else,” Ambrose said.

Tyler Allemeier, a senior who hit the game-tying sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning and struck out two Triton Central batters with runners on base in the top of the seventh, echoed Ambrose’s sentiments about Williams.

“A lot of people feed off that energy,” Allemeier said. “It just brings up the team, especially when things are going bad like today.”

In the fourth inning, the Tigers put up four runs on the Eagles, courtesy of RBI hits from junior Nick Riggins, freshman Brayden Hoover and sophomore Janssen Capps.

In between the top and bottom of the fourth inning, Ambrose told his team to just chip away at the three-run deficit. That’s exactly what they did, scoring one run in each of the following four innings.

“Most high school teams would either let down their emotions when they're down by that many, or they would get too emotional and think every pitch is the end of the world,” Ambrose said. “These guys held it together emotionally.”

In the bottom of the seventh with the score tied at five apiece, the first four Heritage Christian batters reached base via error, walk, bunt single and finally, a walk-off base on balls.

Once the sectional championship trophy was handed to the Eagles (19-12), Allemeier took it and sprinted to the fence separating the Heritage Christian fans from the field in a proud celebration. The senior has been along the ride for three straight sectional titles.

“We’re leaving a legacy,” Allemeier said.

Heritage Christian junior right-hander Tripp Vaughn pitched 5 ⅔ innings, striking out five batters and allowing four runs, two walks and eight hits.

The Tigers fell short of claiming their first sectional championship since 2012 and the fourth in program history, finishing their season 24-4, with half of those losses coming against the Eagles after HC defeated Triton Central 15-4 in the regular season.

Bill Walton, basketball Hall of Famer and colorful commentator, dies of cancer at 71

Bill Walton , the basketball Hall of Fame center who won two national titles at UCLA, two NBA championships in Portland and Boston and later put the “color” in color commentator, died Monday following a prolonged battle with cancer, the NBA announced.

Walton was 71. He was surrounded by his family, according to the NBA.

“Bill Walton was truly one of a kind,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. “As a Hall of Fame player, he redefined the center position. His unique all-around skills made him a dominant force at UCLA and led to an NBA regular-season and Finals MVP, two NBA championships and a spot on the NBA’s 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams.

“Bill then translated his infectious enthusiasm and love for the game to broadcasting, where he delivered insightful and colorful commentary which entertained generations of basketball fans.

“But what I will remember most about him was his zest for life. He was a regular presence at league events – always upbeat, smiling ear to ear and looking to share his wisdom and warmth. I treasured our close friendship, envied his boundless energy and admired the time he took with every person he encountered.”

Love or hate him, Bill Walton insists he’s ‘The Luckiest Guy in the World’

Walton’s basketball journey began at UCLA, where the 6-foot-11, red-headed center starred under legendary coach John Wooden and led the Bruins to national championships in 1972 and 1973, both in perfect 30-0 seasons. In the ’73 title game, Walton took 22 shots and missed only one, scoring a championship contest-record 44 points.

The team at one point won 88 straight games, a men’s record that still stands. In each of his three varsity seasons, Walton was the national college player of the year and an All-American.

Still, Walton and Wooden repeatedly clashed over cultural and political issues , including over Walton’s long hair and his protests against the Vietnam War. In May 1972, Walton was arrested at an antiwar demonstration in the Los Angeles campus. According to a post on the UCLA Library Facebook page , it was Wooden who bailed him out.

The big man with the nifty hook shot was the No. 1 pick in the 1974 NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers and led the team to its only NBA championship in 1977. He was named the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player in that playoffs, and the next season he was named the NBA’s regular season MVP.

His political remarks made him a controversial figure. In April 1975, Walton called for the rejection of the US government and referred to the FBI, who once questioned him, as “the enemy,” according to coverage in the New York Times . Hundreds of fans called for him to be traded and team management denounced his statement but kept him on the roster.

Walton’s career was derailed due to a series of injuries. He left Portland to play for the San Diego/Los Angeles Clippers from 1979 to 1985 but never reached the heights of those earlier seasons and struggled through foot and knee injuries, which led to almost 40 orthopedic surgeries in his life by his count.

He then joined the Boston Celtics, where he rejuvenated his career and in 1986 won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award as a reliable backup to stars Robert Parish and Kevin McHale. Together, the group won the NBA title in 1986 over the Houston Rockets, the second of Walton’s career.

UCLA legend and NBA rival Kareem Abdul-Jabbar said Monday the world feels much heavier with the death of his “great friend.”

“On the court, Bill was a fierce player, but off the court he wasn’t happy unless he did everything he could to make everyone around him happy,” he said. “He was the best of us.”

Walton was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993.

From playing to broadcasting

Despite growing up with a stutter, Walton went on to a successful broadcasting career as a sometimes outlandish commentator for both NBA and NCAA basketball games, most recently working for ESPN.

He was known for bringing a sense of joy, wonder and wackiness to his coverage of the game. A well-known fan of the Grateful Dead, he was often seen wearing tie-dye shirts and sprinkled references to the band in his coverage.

He once said on a broadcast, “Come on, that was no foul! It may be a violation of all the basic rules of human decency, but it’s not a foul.”

On another : “A lot of people understand what not saying anything means, so, in effect, not saying anything is really saying a lot.”

He also liked to flash his intelligence. According to Awful Announcing , one of his best quotes was: “Yesterday we celebrated Sir Isaac Newton’s discovery of gravity. Today, Fabricio Oberto is defying it.”

He struggled with the consequences of all those injuries, and in 2016 told David Axelrod on the CNN podcast “The Axe Files” that back pain nearly drove him to suicide in 2008.

“When you’re in that space, more people commit suicide from back pain than from any other malady. It’s just overwhelming. It destroys every aspect of your life. It destroys every aspect of all the people around you,” he said.

“And here’s this situation where I had nothing, but then I had this surgery and I’m all better. I take no medication. I have no pain. I go full speed ahead now. I’ve never been busier. I’ve never been happier. I haven’t been this healthy since I was 13 years old. In all these years I never thought that I’d be free of pain, I never thought that I’d be happy in love, and I have both of those today. I am the luckiest guy on earth.”

He also told Axelrod how he dealt with his stutter.

“I could not say hello. I could not say thank you. I could not say a single word without just, the stammer, the stutter, the hesitation, and I just could not express myself,” he said. “I express myself through sports. I express myself to reading. I express myself through just being a part of a bigger world that I only dreamed I could ever be a part of.”

Famed announced and former track star Marty Glickman helped Walton work through his speech impediment when Walton was 28.

“He took me over in the corner. We stood behind a potted plant and in five minutes, he just laid it out. Bam! Bam! Bam! This is how you learn how to talk,” he said.

In the wake of Walton’s death, Axelrod praised Walton was more than a basketball player.

“He was an all-world human being, with a huge heart and infectious enthusiasm for life. He lived through intolerable pain and yet, as an announcer, managed to lift our burdens and make us smile,” he posted on X .

UCLA men’s basketball coach Mick Cronin offered his condolences and praised Walton’s legacy in a statement .

“It’s very hard to put into words what he has meant to UCLA’s program, as well as his tremendous impact on college basketball,” he said. “Beyond his remarkable accomplishments as a player, it’s his relentless energy, enthusiasm for the game and unwavering candor that have been the hallmarks of his larger than life personality.”

Walton is survived by his wife, Lori, and four boys, all of whom played college basketball. Luke Walton won two NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers, meaning he and his dad were the first father-son combination with multiple NBA rings.

Bill Walton’s brother Bruce, who died in 2019, played in the Super Bowl with the Dallas Cowboys in January 1976, and they were the first siblings to play in NFL and NBA championship games.

MLB strikeout props for 5/27: Fade in the shade out West

Happy Memorial Day, sports bettors! We hope you're enjoying your day off, but money never sleeps for us. Coming off a winning week in strikeout props, let's kick off the new week with three K bets for the MLB holiday slate.

Justin Steele over 5.5 Ks (-125 FanDuel )

Cubs at Brewers, 4:10 p.m. ET Justin Steele is slowly ramping up his workload since returning from injury earlier this month. The Chicago Cubs left-hander has increased his pitch count in every start this season, and he should be able to push close to 100 pitches on Monday. This is also a solid matchup for Steele, as he has a 31.2 percent strikeout rate in his career against current Milwaukee Brewers hitters. The Brewers rank 18th in MLB this year in K rate (23.2 percent), and that number jumped to 27.2 percent against lefties.

Framber Valdez under 5.5 Ks (+125 DraftKings )

Astros at Mariners, 9:40 p.m. ET We normally love fading the Seattle Mariners with strikeout props. The Mariners have the highest strikeout rate (28.0 percent) and the third-highest whiff rate (27.9 percent) in baseball this season, but they actually have a lower K rate against left-handed pitching. In 178 combined plate appearances against Framber Valdez, the Mariners have a .304 batting average and are striking out just 21.9 percent of the time. Valdez managed just three strikeouts and gave up five earned runs in his start against Seattle earlier this season, and he's gone under 5.5 Ks in five of his seven starts this year.

Bryce Miller under 4.5 Ks (+118 FD )

Astros at Mariners, 9:40 p.m. ET This is a low number on a talented pitcher, but we still like the under at a plus-money price. Bryce Miller has struggled in May with 15 earned runs and six home runs allowed in four starts, and he's gone under 4.5 Ks in three of them. Now he has to face a Houston Astros lineup that has the lowest strikeout rate (17.2 percent), the lowest whiff rate (21.5 percent) and the highest zone contact rate (87.1 percent) in MLB. Current Houston hitters also have a tiny 13.2 percent K rate in 68 combined plate appearances against Miller.
