Steve Vai Announces 2023 Australian Tour

By Jules LeFevre

Veteran guitarist Steve Vai will head down under later this year for a string of tour dates throughout November. Vai will kick things off in Brisbane t the Fortitude Music Hall on Friday, 3rd November, before playing dates in Sydney, Wollongong, Adelaide, Melbourne, and finally Perth on Saturday, 11th November.

The dates form part of Vai’s wide Inviolate tour, which the guitarist has been on for the last few months playing shows across North and South America. Inviolate the album was released in January 2022, spearheaded by the single ‘Teeth of the Hydra’ – the Hydra in question being his slightly bonkers three-necked Ibanez guitar, which you can see below.

Steve Vai: ‘Teeth of the Hydra’

“The idea for this guitar and track came to me roughly seven years ago,” Vai shared in a statement when the single was released. “I envisioned composing and performing a piece of music on a multi-neck instrument where all of the sounds emanated from that one creation with the exception of some keyboards and drums.

“I sent my ideas to Ibanez, and their builders delivered this astonishing wooden creature. I was stunned. It was awesome. When I first laid eyes on it, I named it the Hydra, and instantly knew the name of the song would be ‘Teeth of the Hydra’.”

Following Inviolate, Vai dropped an album called Vai/Gash, which had apparently been sitting in his archives for nearly 30 years. The guitarist and his band will spend nearly two years on tour in support of both releases.

“We are saturating the entire globe on this tour,” says Vai. “It’s everything I imagined when I was a kid jamming in my bedroom. Travelling The World like this with my band, crew and family, touching and tasting all these magnificent cultures and feeling the powerful energy from the audiences is what we call living the dream.”

FLETCHER Searched For An Antidote, And Found A Heart-Stopping Album Along The Way

Fans Expect 'Certain Things', But That Won’t Stop Steve Vai Doing What He Wants

Guitar legend Steve Vai might be the master of fretboard histrionics, but in talking to The Music about his highly anticipated national tour, Mark Hebblewhite quickly found out that, above all, he’s one of rock n roll’s nicest guys.

More Steve Vai

“ Pie Face ” is Steve Vai ’s unexpected answer when asked about his overriding memories of his many visits to our shores. “Everywhere you go in Australia, there’s one of those,” he laughs. “No, actually, I’ve always thought that every city I play in Australia has a real particular character to it – I always remember that.

“But more importantly, and I’ve said this in many interviews, the Australian people are the nicest people in the world. I really love how accommodating people are in Australia and how receptive and supportive the fans are. Oh, I also arrange it so I can spend a day on Rottnest Island at the end of every tour – which is one of my favourite things to do.”

This upcoming tour is taking on particular importance for Vai. Leaving aside the fact that COVID-19 meant the prolific performer was unable to tour for years, Vai is now promoting not only 2022’s brand new studio album Inviolate but also a special recording from way back in 1991, and only released this year, called Vai/Gash .

The two LPs couldn’t be more different. Inviolate is a tour de force of Vai’s legendary guitar prowess and an album that undulates between mind-blowing shred and subtle melody and textured songcraft. Vai/Gash , on the other hand, is a simple joie de vivre, raw good, time rock n roll that shows a side of Vai rarely seen and which pays tribute to his friend and the album’s vocalist, Johnny " Gash " Sombrotto , who sadly passed away in a motorcycle accident in 1998.

Given Vai’s reputation as a shredder, was he worried that going against type on Vai/Gash would disappoint fans who expect technical mastery on everything that bears his name?

“It’s interesting you ask because I do think that fans expect certain things, and I sometimes find myself wondering if I should incorporate what I know people want in my music,” he muses. “But when push comes to shove – when inspiration comes over you - it trumps everything I think I should be doing. I have the musical DNA and attitude to bring what I think is needed to any project that I happen to be working on at the time – whether it be my own music or working with other artists.

Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter

“With all the different things I did earlier in my career, I knew that I liked making what I call ‘high information’ music - where I can get forensic with notes and cords. That’s how you got the Passion and Warfare LP, for example. But there’s occasionally a hankering to go back and do something different – music from a different part of my psyche, so to speak. And that’s what happened with the Vai/Gash record. I recorded this after Passion and Warfare, and if you listened to the two records together, you would think two completely different people made them.”

Vai is keen to let people know that even though the songs had languished in the vaults for years, he strongly believed they deserved to be heard, particularly given his friend Johnny ‘Gash’ never got to tour and bring the material to life.

“I made sure that I had the blessing of Johnny’s family before releasing the album, and I told them that I wanted to really make the record about Johnny rather than it being just another Steve Vai record. He had so much charisma and chutzpah – fantastic vocal delivery - he would have made such a great rock star.”

One of the biggest challenges facing Vai in planning any tour is trying to construct a setlist from a huge body of work. So how does he approach it?

“Look, there’s a conventional approach with setlists that you generally have to adhere to,” explains Vai. “There’s always a handful of songs that folks want to hear. If I didn’t play - say - Tender Surrender, Bad Horsie or For The Love Of God, I’d probably get beat up. Then I like to go back into the catalogue and grab a couple of things that I haven’t played for a while.

“After that, there is a healthy smattering of the new material. Usually, you would do three or four songs from the new record, but Inviolate is so ripe for us to play that we’ve been doing six or seven songs from the record. It brings something fresh – new dynamics to the set.”

Unfortunately, while tunes off Inviolate will be a centrepiece of the upcoming shows, the Vai/Gash material is a little harder to carry off.

“I would love to do that material,” offers Vai. “But the real problem is that there is no one who can sing that stuff. I can’t sing it, that’s for sure – maybe I should put an APB out for anyone in the crew who could sing a number from that record – or maybe even from the crowd (laughs).”

During his career, Vai has worked with a veritable who’s who of the rock world, from noted weirdo Frank Zappa, through to Whitesnake, David Lee Roth, Dream Theatre, Ozzy Osbourne and even Spinal Tap. But The Music was very keen to hear about his experience with rock’s ultimate outlaw, Lemmy.

“Lemmy knew exactly what he wanted,” explains Vai in relation to his work on Motorhead’s late career ‘comeback album’, the monolithic Inferno . “I met him at the Rainbow, which was basically his home, and I said to him, “When are you going to ask me to play on one of your records?” He turned around and said – ‘I’ll be at your house at 1 pm on Wednesday’. Sure enough, he turned up at my home studio, and we sat for twenty hours and chatted and recorded. When I was playing, he really produced me – he said to me – ‘On this take, I want you to stand there, close your eyes and imagine there is a huge arena full of people’. It was great input that I’d never really had in the studio. He knew when it was right, and he knew when it wasn’t right.”

“Motorhead revolved in its own universe: it was rock and roll to the purest degree. With Lemmy, that sound, that bass, that voice, the way he built the songs, and the way he wrote with attitude – we were so lucky to have him and his music.”

“The Satch/Vai Tour is happening! I’m so looking forward to sharing the stage with Steve again. Every time we play together it takes me back to when we were teenagers, eating and breathing music every second of the day, pushing, challenging and helping each other to be the best we could be. I guess we’ve never stopped!” – Joe “Touring with Joe is always a pleasure and an honor. He is my favorite guitarist to jam with, and now we have another opportunity to take it to the stage. I feel as though we are both at the top of our game and that the show will be a powerful celebration of the coolest instrument in the world, the electric guitar!” – Steve

Steve Vai Announces 2023 Australian Tour

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

STEVE VAI: ‘INVIOLATE’ TOUR INTERVIEW

  • Greg Phillips
  • August 1, 2023

steve vai tour melbourne

Virtuoso guitarist, composer and producer, Steve Vai is considered by many as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. In over 40 years in the industry, Vai has sold over 15 million records, received three Grammy Awards, and recorded with music legends like Frank Zappa, David Lee Roth, Whitesnake and many more.   Vai has also toured extensively and recorded live projects with G3 (collaborating with different touring lineups including Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Steve Lukather) and Generation Axe, a supergroup Vai formed with Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, Nuno Bettencourt and Tosin.

Live Nation are excited to announce the forthcoming Steve Vai ‘Inviolate’ tour which sees Steve and his band back in Australia and New Zealand for the first time since their highly successful shows in 2013.

Ahead of the Australian and New Zealand ‘Inviolate’ tour, Joshua Munday caught up with Steve Vai over zoom call to talk, career, gear, his Vai/Gash and Inviolate albums and of course the tour downunder

The Tour kicks off on 31 October 2023 in Wellington before visiting Auckland, Brisbane, Sydney, Wollongong, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth.

Tickets for all shows are available from livenation.com.au & livenation.co.nz

Steve Vai shares, “The Inviolate world tour marches on. We are saturating the entire globe on this tour. It’s everything I imagined when I was a kid jamming in my bedroom. Travelling The World like this with my band, crew and family, touching and tasting all these magnificent cultures and feeling the powerful energy from the audiences is what we call living the dream. I am eternally grateful to all the fans that make this possible. We will see you soon!”

The extensive ‘Inviolate’ tour just began a second leg of dates in North America, with Canadian dates to follow. In June, the Inviolate World Tour visited Central and South America with shows played in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, Ecuador, Chile, Costa Rica, and Mexico.

Over the past two years, Vai released a new studio album titled ‘Inviolate’ and a record titled ‘Vai/Gash’ which he had been holding in his archive for three decades.   In support of both releases, Vai embarked on a world Tour in 2022 that will take the better part of 2 years and see the band play in excess of 200 shows.

Of the Vai/Gash album, Vai shares, “The album was written and recorded in somewhat of a stream of consciousness in 1991 within perhaps a 2-week period as an answer to my desire to have a particular kind of music to listen to when I was riding my Harley Davison Motorcycle with my friends. One of those friends was John “Gash” Sombrotto, who is the powerful singer on this record. It’s reminiscent of a certain type of rock music I enjoyed as a teenager in the 1970s. These recordings sat on the shelf for over 30 years and are being released now in 2023.

“My face has melted”: Steve Vai and Joe Satriani cover Metallica’s Enter Sandman during opening Satch/Vai Tour show – and give their first-ever collaborative single its live debut

After their own solo sets, the two virtuosos shared the stage to perform The Sea of Emotions, Pt. 1, and the Kinks' You Really Got Me – before wrapping things up with a wah-drenched cover of the Metallica classic

Steve Vai and Joe Satriani

Last November, it was announced that Joe Satriani and Steve Vai would be working on new music together for the first time – and they’d be hitting the road for a co-headline tour.

Commencing mere weeks after the pair concluded their G3 duties with Eric Johnson , the Satch/Vai Tour officially kicked off last Friday (March 22) with a show at Hard Rock Live in Orlando, Florida.

The first Satch/Vai tour seemingly set the template for future shows, and loosely followed the same schedule established by the G3 Reunion format. Namely, each individual electric guitar virtuoso was granted their own independent set, before the pair shared the stage for the finale.

Thanks to some diligent gig-goers – and Satriani himself – footage from the evening has now made its way online.

For Vai’s show-opening set, Teeth of the Hydra , Tender Surrender , Little Pretty and For the Love of God all featured. Details of Satch’s opening-night setlist are hard to come by, but his set on the 23rd comprised the usual suspects: Surfing with the Alien , Ice 9 , Flying in a Blue Dream and more – it’s likely his Orlando set followed the same outline.

However, it was the encore that perhaps warranted the most attention, with Vai and Satch locking fretboards of their PIA and JS1CR30 Ibanez signature guitars for a three-song finale that comprised a cover of a Metallica track, a rendition of a Kinks classic, and the live debut of the pair’s first-ever joint single.

The latter song, titled The Sea of Emotion, Pt.1 , set the tone of the encore, and gave attendees an exclusive preview. No doubt dialed up for the live setting, the near-10 minute track saw Satch and Vai take turns noodling over a pensive progression, before taking a complete left-turn and dropping into a hair-raising, whammy bar-tinged riff.

There are some awe-inspiring harmonies and melodies in there, with that run at the 5:00 mark onwards in the video below serving as a particular highlight. It's clearly appeased fans, with one commenter on YouTube noting: “My face has melted.”

Set for an official release on March 29, the track is not only significant for the fact it’s the guitarists’ first-ever collaborative single, but also because it’s a nod to the pair’s past.

Vai and Satch’s shared six-string history is well-documented. They both attended the same high school in Long Island, for instance, and in the ‘70s Satriani famously tutored Vai on the guitar.

Satch addressed this tutor/student history while reintroducing Vai to the stage on the opening night: “I thought, ‘Oh, wow. This kid is going to be phenomenal when he grows up. I just have to civilize him somehow.’ I didn't.”

And, as the two guitar heroes once explained in an interview with Guitar World from 1990 , the Sea of Emotion marks an important aspect of that shared experience: it was the name of a place they both went to in New York. In fact, the pair had even earmarked “The Sea of Emotions” as a potential song title more than 30 years ago.

“I've always thought about doing a record with Joe,” Vai said at the time. “Right now, our careers just won’t allow it because we're so busy. But one of these days, when everything dies down, we'll sit down and do it.”

“When we've become totally unpopular,” Satriani added. “We'll probably get together. [Drops into old man voice] Oh, Steve, remember the old lick…” To that, Vai suggested they could call it “The Sea of Emotion”.

A cover of the Kinks’ You Really Got Me then followed, before the two brought the show to a close with a wah-drenched take on Enter Sandman . Again, it was another significant inclusion to the setlist, given the fact Satch had also once taught guitar to Kirk Hammett.

“Thank you Orlando!” Satriani wrote on Instagram after the show. “The Satch/Vai Tour has officially taken flight.”

The Satch/Vai Tour is scheduled to continue tonight (March 25) at the Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Florida.
