Visit Lyon in 1 day – My self-guided walking tour + itinerary

You have programmed for your little weekend of visit Lyon in 1 day . Well, my self-guided walking tour could help you discover the most beautiful sites of Lyon in 1 day. All you have to do is follow my walking route on the attached Google Maps to discover the most beautiful places in Lyon.

This tourist circuit makes a loop that is carried out quietly on foot in one day (see route map below).

How to visit Lyon in 1 day?

To visit Lyon in 1 day, you have several possibilities:

  • Lyon private tour with a guide
  • Discover Lyon by bike
  • Half-day group tour of Lyon with a guide
  • Visit Lyon on your own on foot in 1 day by following my circuit on foot. This circuit allows you to see most of Lyon. See details below.

What to visit in Lyon in 1 day?

It's difficult to choose among all the beautiful places in Lyon, the sites that turn out to be the most interesting to visit in 1 day! It's also not easy to organize them to make a nice loop on foot but not at a running pace. So I voluntarily eliminated all visits to museums and certain churches.

The majority of the sites on my self-guided tour are to be seen from the outside because to do the in-depth visits, you would need to plan at least 2 days. Indeed, visiting museums takes too much time.

Here is the list of sites that can be visited in Lyon in 1 day and that I have selected for my self-guided tour (in order of visits):

  • Place Bellecour
  • Place des Jacobins
  • Celestins Square
  • Célestins Theater
  • Saint John Cathedral
  • Hill of Fourvière
  • Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière
  • Restaurant Christian Tedoie
  • Gourguillon climb
  • Traboules of old Lyon
  • Hermès restaurant dinner cruise

Self-guided walking tour to visit Lyon in 1 day

Departure from the circuit Place Bellecour . This is the heart of the Lyon peninsula , a large place where the Lyonnais gather for all types of events (sporting, cultural or political). You will of course take the photo of the statue of Louis XIV on his horse and why not a little coffee to start the day off right!

Place bellecour in my Lyon tour in 1 day

Then you will leave by the Emile Zola street , to join the 1 st stage of my tour: One of the most beautiful squares in Lyon, the Place des Jacobins  !

One of the most beautiful squares in Lyon, the Place des Jacobins

Then by taking rue Jean Fabre, you will arrive at the Celestins Square then discover the Célestins Theater which is a magnificent Italian theater.

One of the most beautiful squares in Lyon, the Place des Jacobins and its theater in Lyon

By joining the Tisitt wharf , you will take the Bonaparte Bridge which allows you to cross the Saône to reach the heart of Old Lyon ( medieval and Renaissance quarter ) . Your best bet will be to start visiting the Saint John Cathedral and admire his gigantic rose window, s gargoyles threatening et its majestic architecture Gothic.

Saint Jean Cathedral in my itinerary to visit Lyon in 1 day on foot

Then I advise you to go to the funicular station which is to the Vieux-Lyon metro station . Thus, with the funicular, you will go directly (and more easily than on foot) to the Hill of Fourvière .

This is where the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière which overlook the city of Lyon since the end of the 19th century.

Notre-Dame de Fourvière Basilica as part of my tour of Lyon

Since the esplanade of the basilica , you will have a panoramic view of Lyon. You can visit the basilica which was built to thank the Virgin for having spared Lyon the Prussian invasion in 1870.

Then the circuit continues through rue Roger Radisson to turn into the rue Cléber to enter the site Juldunum . This is the ancient site of Fourvière, entry to which is free. You can visit the great theater Gallo-Roman (15th century BC), the Temple of Cybele or lower, the O deon which has preserved some beautiful mosaics.

Visit Lyon in 1 day - Restaurant

To continue the route, you will have to take the rue Clebert , go back down Antiquaille Square up to the Pierre Marion Street to get to street n ° 4. This is where I advise you to take the lunch break: at restaurant Christian Tedoie.

It’s a good plan for lunch because this gourmet restaurant offers gourmet and refined cuisine with a formula at 24 € and in a really nice setting (panoramic terrace).

Restaurant stopover in my tour of Lyon in 1 day

Visit Lyon in 1 day - Vieux Lyon

Now that you have regained your strength, I suggest you do the Gourguillon climb reverse !

Gourguillon climb

Going down rue Pierre Marion, you will turn left into rue des Farges to join the Gourguillon climb that you will descend. This street (little known to tourists) is one of the oldest streets in Lyon with its cobblestones, its medieval houses from the 15th century. You can admire rare half-timbered houses in Impasse Turquet, a street perpendicular to rue Gourguillon.

Visit Lyon in 1 day - Traboules

At number 2 of the street, opens a traboule which goes up to Chemin Neuf. You can take it to arrive at Place Beauregard and take the stairs of the Montée des Épies.

A but you are probably thinking a traboule  ??? What is that ?

These are small passages characteristic of the city of Lyon that allow you to cross from one street to another or from one district to another. Lyon has more than 300 which have become real tourist attractions. If you want to visit them, there is an app ( Mobile application to download ) which allows you to follow routes specifically dedicated to visits to the traboules .

And if you want to discover it for yourself, here is the list of the most visited traboules:

  • Rue Royale / Quai Lassagne
  • 6-8 small rue des Feuillants / 19 place Tolozan
  • 2 Place des Terreaux
  • 4 rue Désirée / 7 rue Puits-Gaillot
  • 3 place Louis Pradel / 1 rue Luigini
  • 5 rue Joseph-Serlin / 2 place Louis Pradel
  • 13 rue de la Poulaillerie / 2 rue des Forces
  • Passage de l'Argue
  • 2 rue Charles-Dullin / 1 rue Gaspard-André

After getting lost in the alleys and traboules of old Lyon , you can return to your hotel to relax before dinner.

Visit Lyon in 1 day - Cruise on the Rhône

And to finish in style, why not have dinner while having a belle boat cruise on the banks of the Rhône ? It was a report some time ago that gave me this idea: View report

The advantage is that you can spend a romantic evening along the water while discovering monuments that you will not have had time to visit in my circuit "  Lyon in 1 day  "!

a beautiful boat cruise on the banks of the Rhône

To do this dinner cruise at  Hermès restaurant (provided by the Cie Les Bâteaux Lyonnais), you have to go to 16 Quai Claude Bernard (Left bank of the Rhône at the foot of the University Bridge) just 10 minutes walk from the hotel which I present to you below. Remember to book at 04.78.42.96.81!

Where to stay to visit Lyon on foot?

For a little one weekend in Lyon , I recommend that you choose a hotel well placed to be accommodated in the most beautiful districts of Lyon (beware of areas to avoid in Lyon ). Its location is ideal so as not to waste time in transport and to be close to restaurants and shops while being quiet.

My good plan is hotel La Residence because it is really perfect in terms of services, has an ideal location and all this at an unbeatable price for Lyon! Indeed, it is located in a pedestrian street on the Lyon peninsula, a 3-minute walk from Place Bellecour and 450 meters from the old town.

I hope that my circuit inspires you ... If you prefer to let yourself be guided to visit Lyon, here is a good plan: Guided tour of Old Lyon So, perhaps on the occasion of the festival of Lights or a whole weekend in Lyon: Lyon in 2 days or a combined circuit Lyon - Annecy you will have the opportunity to follow this little tour of Lyon on foot !

The 7 Best Lyon Food Tours in France’s Gastronomic Capital

Published 06 November 2023 by  Leyla Alyanak  — Parisian by birth, Lyonnaise by adoption, historian by passion

Lyon is known for many things - and great food is at the top of the list. If you're looking for an introduction to the city's food specialties, taking one of these 7 Lyon food tours is the best way to start.

Walking tours are ideal to discover Lyon and lyonnaise cuisine.

My first Lyon food tour was typical: it involved walking around the Old Town, sampling everything from pralines to saucisson. But the best part was meeting the various restaurant and shop owners, who explained the "why" of dishes, and the stories behind them.

The 7 Best Lyon Food Tours

Below you’ll find a list of the top 7 food tours to take in Lyon, and they're all highly rated, with a minimum of 4.5 out of 5 stars (most actually have 5/5).

Lyon has over 4,000 restaurants that feature French cuisine, including many local and regional specialties. Food has long been an important part of the local culture, and many of the best-loved recipes have been passed down through generations − that's how important food is here.

Most Lyon food gourmet tours traditionally involve a walk through the historic old town, where you'll visit several establishments and sample food and wine. A few other tours may take you to different parts of town, like the vegan tour that goes to Croix-Rousse or the bike tour that explores several parts of Lyon.

Whichever you choose will be a great start to your Lyon culinary adventure − and you won't have to face the overwhelming decisions of what to try first, where, and you'll gain plenty of insight into the food culture.

Let me add that many of the Lyon food tours are similar, varying only in length and the choice of local artisans along the way, whether charcuterie producers or praline makers. They're all highly rated and you'll do well with any of them.

Lyon is an old city which was founded by the Romans in 43 BC. Now the France’s third largest city is famous for rich history, world-famous cuisine and impressive architecture.

Lyon is an easy city to explore on foot. Like Paris , Lyon is divided into nine arrondissements. Each one has its own identity and vibe, making exploring Lyon very diverse and fun. The Renaissance architecture of old Lyon, the heart of Lyon surrounding the Place Bellecour, the lively neighborhood around the Place des Terreaux, the Croix-Rousse with the locals shopping in little markets, the newly-developed contemporary Confluence district . . .

And of course, the food! It is not a surprise that France’s most famous chef, Paul Bocuse, was born and based here!

How to Get to Lyon

A nice stop between burgundy & provence.

  • Lyon is perfectly located for a stop between Burgundy (2hr drive from Dijon) and Provence (2hr30 drive to Avignon).
  • If you want to drive from Paris to Lyon, it is about 4hrs30 and in this case, better to take a train.

Getting to Lyon by Train

  • Lyon is a 2hr high-speed train ride from Paris , there are several direct connections per day from downtown Paris, as well as to Paris CDG Airport.
  • There are 2 main train stations in Lyon : Lyon Part-Dieu and Lyon Perrache. You should be very careful if you connect in Lyon to do it in the same station. We handle these details for our travelers.

The History of Lyon

It is believed that Lyon was first inhabited over 40,000 years ago. But the city we know today started with the arrival of the Romans who, wanting to conquer Gaul, saw Lyon as the ideal site. Multiple vestiges from this period remain on Fourvière Hill and in the Croix Rousse.  We can help you discover more about the history on a self-guided walking tour of Lyon's old town.

Lyon - during the Renaissance

During the Renaissance, Lyon became an important trade center. Merchants and bankers from Italy came, building beautiful houses in the “Vieux Lyon” that still exist today. Printing and silk-making became important industries. The “Canuts” silk workers created passageways for carrying the products down to the river and not get rained on. These “traboules” still exist, and were used by the French Resistance during WWII to quickly and secretly get around the city.

Lyon - during World War II

During WWII, Lyon was one of the main sites of the Resistance movement (Jean Moulin operated here), as well as a stronghold for the SS (Klaus Barbie’s headquarters were in Lyon). The Resistance and Deportation History Center is located in the buildings occupied by Barbie and is an important site serving the memory of this time.

Lyon - constantly moving

The  Lumières brothers who lived in Lyon   invented the cinema in the 1890s. Since then, the city has constantly developed with great modernity. Jean Nouvel designed the opera house in 1990, the banks of the Rhone river were refurbished in the mid-2000s, and the new Confluence district has regenerated the southern Presqu’île with contemporary architecture and sustainable development.

There is so much to discover when it comes to tours and sightseeing in Lyon. In your France Just For You guidebook , we'll recommend the most popular places to visit on Lyon city tours (based on your interests). We'll also suggest some hidden gems that other tourists don't know about.

The Food, oh the Food!

Lyon is the gastronomical capital of the top gastronomical country in the world! Tummies get ready, and let the adventure begin!

The city is surrounded by areas provided top quality products : meats from the Monts du Lyonnais and the Dombes, fish from Savoy, chicken from Bresse, wines from the Rhone valley and the Beaujolais, and tons of local cheese. All of these are on display at the numerous outside markets or at the famous Les Halles indoor market - a great place to enjoy food and wine tasting in Lyon. The markets are a must-see on a Lyon self guided walking tour.

Here are some self-drive trip ideas for gourmet travelers .

  • Quenelles : a pike dumpling soufflé often covered in Nantua sauce made with crayfish from nearby Nantua lake, then baked in the oven
  • Saucisson brioche : a sausage made with pistachios and surrounded by a soft brioche
  • Salade lyonnaise : you will be surprised as to how delicious a simple salad can be (frisée lettuce, lardons, croutons and a poached egg)
  • For the more adventurous, the Tablier de sapeur : cooked beef tripe, marinated in white wine, then covered in breadcrumbs and fried. It is usually served with steamed potatoes and sauce gribiche, made from hard-boiled eggs, mustard and chives.
  • Cheese : creamy Saint Marcellin and St Félicien, the Cervelle des canuts (fromage blanc seasoned with herbs, shallots, olive oil and vinegar usually served as a starter), and the Arôme de Lyon (dried cow’s milk cheese that is macerated in wine for 3 weeks, with the grapes encrusting the final product)
  • Sweets : Coussin de Lyon (from Voisin chocolate shop) and the Tarte à la Praline (a cream tart covered in delicious pink pralines)

Where to stay in Lyon

As with Paris, to optimize your stay, we recommend staying in the heart of Lyon, on its “presqu’île”. We have selected boutique-hotels very central that will enable you to easily explore and make the most of your time in “the other city of lights”.

We visited many towns and villages, Aix, Cassis, Marseilles, les Gorges du Verdon,...The personalized guide book was golden for us. The details and suggestions in the book allowed us to do and see more than what we could have done on our own (Along with vouchers and maps). Her attention to every detail was impressive. From the selection of hotels/B&B and their location, to activities, to restaurants and tours were fabulous. You are a gifted team and we thank you for making this one of the best trips we have had.

My boyfriend and I spent a week in Paris last month and we decided that we would do a couple of day-tours outside of the city during our trip. We really wanted to avoid the typical tour-bus day-tour and the crowds that come along with these kinds of tours – we wanted something more personalized that would allow us to go at our own pace. I found the France Just For You website and the ‘Bayeux and World War II Sites in a Day’ tour seemed to be exactly the type of thing we were looking for, as we’re both really interested in history. On a personal note, this tour appealed to me because my grandfather fought in Normandy in World War II. I filled up the contact form on the website and Emilie got back to me the same day. She organized every little detail to make it the perfect tour for us: she booked our return train tickets from Paris, organized for us to spend the morning on our own in the picturesque old town of Bayeux, where we enjoyed exploring the cathedral and saw the famous Bayeux Tapestry. Emilie sent over maps and directions and recommended a fantastic restaurant for lunch. After lunch, our private guide Christophe met us at the agreed meeting point in Bayeux and took us to the Normandy landing sites. I had explained to Emilie that I specifically wanted to visit this site as my grandpa had fought for one of the American infantry divisions that landed in Normandy in 1944. Christophe was extremely knowledgeable (and very patient with all of my questions!) and took us to the sites where my grandpa’s battalion would have fought. It was a very moving experience, especially when I thought back to the stories that my grandpa used to tell me about the war. I really couldn’t have chosen a better tour option. It was perfectly customized to the preferences that I had given to Emilie, and she was very thorough and asked all of the right questions to help her plan the perfect day for us. We knew how to contact her in case there were any problems on the day (which there weren't), and the fact that everything was planned for us meant that we could just focus on enjoying the day. Thank you so much, I wouldn’t hesitate to book with you again!

We highly recommend Emilie’s services. She put together an excellent itinerary. She made all the arrangements and the guides she retained for us where top notch. We highly recommend Emilie’s services. She put together an excellent itinerary. She made all the arrangements and the guides she retained for us where top notch. The B&B accommodations were very good, the hosts were terrific and we enjoyed the other travelers we met at breakfast. We did two table d'hote dinners which were excellent and her restaurant recommendations were wonderful! Everything is set forth in a book in which she provides a day by day itinerary with cultural descriptions, history, restaurant choices and of course directions. She arranged for our rental car with Enterprise car rental; and, although her arrangements were perfect, through no fault of Emilie's we had a dispute with Enterprise. Emilie immediately became involved and eventually resolved the problem to our satisfaction. I am certain that without Emilie's assistance we would not have received any satisfaction from Enterprise. In short we highly recommend Emilie. Most often we plan our trips ourselves arranging for hotels, transportation, guides etc. I was in the process of doing the same when we found Emilie. Emilie added substantial value and enjoyment to our trip.

Local passionate artisans

self guided food tour lyon

La Crèmerie Lyonnaise – Cheeses shop

I took over this cheese dairy, which had been open for 8 years, in the Saint Georges district 6 years ago. Having previously worked in catering and food distribution, I wanted to devote myself to my passion for good local products. In collaboration with several regional artisans such as Christian Janier (MOF 2000), I take great pleasure in selecting various and varied quality cheeses for everyone’s enjoyment.

self guided food tour lyon

BMD – Wine bar

Passionate about wine since always, I decided to open this establishment 6 years ago. Making myself happy by working with quality products is a priority for me! I select and offer wines from producers in the region but also French and international wines. Having grown up in Old Lyon, this new adventure is a homecoming.

Alexandre Luminarium

Luminarium – Praline pie and drinks

Alexandre is captain of the Luminarium, a charming establishment with a cozy atmosphere. The Luminarium offers you a wide selection of teas developed by them, but coffee lovers will also be combined. Alexandre has chosen a Mokxa roaster from Lyon and he will be delighted to introduce you to their selection according to the rules of the art, espresso, ristretto or cappuccino, it’s like being in Italy! Sweet tooths will not be left out and could enjoy cheesecake, cookies and other sweets!

self guided food tour lyon

Les Fines Gueules –  Bouchon Lyonnais

Here we have two quality requirements: Serving a real Lyonnais food and using fresh local products.

First of all, he studied at the Hotel School of Chamalières and after several experiences in Lyon, Paris and London he had a job at the Paul Bocuse Institute and finally worked 11 years with Paul Bocuse in Collonges as Deputy Director. As a result he is back to the fundamentals of Lyon’s kitchen: Here we peel, we bone, we simmer, in a word we cook “… Enjoy your meal and let you be parched in our beautiful district of Old Lyon!

rpt

La chope de Lug – Beer cellar

For 14 years Frédéric has been the master of the place, a real AliBaba cave for those looking for quality Lyonnaise specialties. Here, only good food, artisanal cured meats, Lyonnaise sweets and above all a sense of welcome and unparalleled generosity. Frédéric is a real gone and he will be happy to introduce you to the spirit of Lyon’s ripailleur. “Bon appetit and thirsty”!

La Fabrique Givrée – Artisanal ice creams

The adventure of Fabrique Givrée, is that of three childhood friends: Jérémie, Martin, et Hugues. Jérémie, a young expert and offbeat chef spent his early years in the saucepans. But when he was adolescent he chose to be a pastry chef! After 15 years in prestigious houses (Fauchon, le Bristol, Valrhona), in 2012 Jérémie chooses to leave with his sidekicks in search of the ultimate ice cream, putting his mastery of tastes and textures at the service of his unbridled imagination and his love for sharing.

Etienne (MOF)

Mons – cheeses.

In 1964, Hubert Mons and his wife decided to sell cheeses on the markets of the Roannaise region. In 1983, Hervé, the eldest son, after a career with the greatest Parisian cheese maker, established the first point of sale at the Halles Diderot. He continues to travel around France in search of the best products, producers who still produce in a traditional way respecting the ancestral know-how. Products which then he refines in his cellars.

This is why Maison MONS is now the official supplier of the best restaurants around the world and the reference in terms of cheese specialties.

Bobosse – charcuteries  (cold cuts).

Since the 1960s, René Besson a.k.a Bobosse created a cold cuts shop whose foundations were fresh products, quality and friendliness. From Lyon’s bouchons to the great Parisian restaurants, to the inns of France and Navarre, this ambassador of St Antoine – patron of the charcutiers – has made known his products, thereby developing the image of the whole Beaujolais region. Of course, the years have passed away, but stringed titled andouillettes, baked sausages and other dishes are the best proof of the well-preserved know-how.

“Boys”

Merle – oysters.

In 1938, Alphonse Merle bought the Maison Forte “Oysters and Shellfish” to set up at Les Halles des Cordeliers. With the help of his son Alain, champion of France’s oyster sellers in 1971, he made possible that the house Merle become the reference for the tasting of oysters in Lyon. In 2005, Alain Merle sold his house to the Lameloise family, owner of the Brasserie Georges. Today, the director Philippe Allard and his Chef, Oyster seller, Romain Masse continue this beautiful story with passion and talent.

In a five-star review of the very first show of Swift’s Eras tour , critic Kelsey Barnes wrote how the US star guided fans through more than a decade’s worth of “her best work”.

“Her ‘Eras Tour’ was designed as a journey through that staggering back catalogue of 10 albums, from her earlier country twang on her self-titled debut to the shift to synth-pop on 1989 , then to the subdued folk and alt-rock of Folklore and Evermore ,” she wrote.

“Throughout the opening night of the tour, it frequently feels as though the audience is being caught up with Swift’s past, present and future. In the 44-song setlist that spans three hours and 15 minutes, she shows why the “era” concept is so integral to who she is. Each chapter marks a specific shift in her artistry.”

The Tortured Poets Department, released on 19 April, is the pop titan’s 11th studio album. It appears to have been inspired, in part, by the five stages of grief. Ahead of the release, Swift shared five new playlists that arrange her songs into those stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.

“These songs represent making room for more good in your life,” she says in a brief audio message that accompanied the final playlist, acceptance. “Making that choice. Because a lot of time when we lose things, we gain things too.”
