St. Maarten has been open for international tourism since July 2020. Tourists from most countries can visit, making it one of the easiest-to-visit countries that are open to tourists .

All travelers must submit an Electronic Health Authorization System Form at least 12 hours before their departure. International travelers must purchase mandatory COVID-19 insurance as part of completing the form.

Travelers from low-risk countries can enter St. Maarten without any testing requirements. Travelers from high-risk countries, regardless of their vaccination status, must present proof of a negative RT-PCR test result from within 72 hours before departure. Travelers from the US and Canada must have a negative RT-PCR test result from within 72 hours prior to departure or a negative antigen test result from within 48 hours before departure, regardless of their vaccination status.

Residents of St. Maarten, St. Martin, St. Eustatius, and Saba who travel from banned countries must have proof of a negative RT-PCR test result from within 72 hours before departure.

If you’re going to get the COVID-19 vaccine before traveling to St. Maarten, I recommend taking a copy of a vaccination record or certificate with you in case Sint Maarten changes its travel restrictions.

If you are arriving from a high-risk country, you must have proof of a negative RT-PCR test result from within 72 hours of departure . If you are traveling from a low-risk country (Anguilla, Barbados, Bonaire, Cayman Islands, China, Grenada, Hong Kong, Montserrat, New Zealand, Saba, Singapore, St. Barthelemy, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Eustatius, and Turks and Caicos), you do not have to take a PCR test to enter St. Maarten. Children under the age of 10 are also exempt from the PCR test requirement.

Is there a mandatory quarantine upon arrival in St. Maarten?

There is no mandatory quarantine upon arrival in St. Maarten as long as you do not test positive for COVID-19.

If you are traveling from a high-risk country, you will have to monitor your temperature and the appearance of any flu-like symptoms for 5 consecutive days from your arrival. You will be able to submit this information online daily.

Travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage to visit St. Maarten

Unless you are a St. Maarten resident or French national, you must opt in to mandatory COVID-19 insurance as part of completing your Electronic Health Authorization System Form .

This insurance covers hospital and intensive care unit costs, isolation expenses, COVID-19 testing, medical evacuation, and more, up to a limit of $50,000 USD. It is free for children ages 0-14 and $15 for anyone age 15 and older. You will be able to pay this fee when you complete your EHAS form.

St. Maarten has reopened many of its businesses, including hotels and restaurants. Additionally, tours are operating and beaches are open, so you should have plenty to do while you’re in Sint Maarten.

Looking forward to sunbathing? Beaches in St. Maarten are currently open, so you’ll definitely get the chance to enjoy the sun and sand if you visit.

Beachgoers must wear masks when they cannot keep a distance of 6 feet away from others who are not in their household. They must also keep their beach chairs 6 feet apart from the beach chairs of others who are not in their household. Gatherings may not be larger than 5 people.

Do you need a passport to visit St. Maarten?

Yes, you do need a valid passport to travel to St. Maarten + St. Martin.

St. Maarten Airport (SXM) info

Travelers wanting to visit St. Maarten will fly into the Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM). Many major airlines fly here, including United, American Airlines, JetBlue, Delta, and more!

In fact, more and more airlines are adding direct flights to SXM from major cities, including Dallas, TX starting in June 2021 !

And yes, this is the famous airport where the planes land right above the beach! It’s so fun to watch !

Traveling to St. Maarten + St. Martin: COVID Restrictions

Due to COVID-19, every traveler has to submit an application through an Electronic Health Authorization System (EHAS) BEFORE arriving on the island . Without pre-authorization, you will not be able to board your plane. When applying, you will be required to submit proof of a negative COVID test.

Traveling to St. Maarten/St. Martin - COVID requirements

Starting May 24, 2021 the following rules apply for testing:

“For fully vaccinated travelers, a negative Ag test result within 48 hours before departure is required. Official proof of the vaccination status (national vaccination card) must be uploaded in EHAS. The Ag test must carry at least an FDA-EUA approval. For non-fully vaccinated travelers, a negative rt-PCR test result within 48 hours before departure is required.”
rt-PCR test requirements: “For travelers from the USA, US territories and Canada the time frame remains 120 hrs. prior to departure.”
Antigen test requirements: “travelers originating from the USA and Canada can do an antigen test for the SARS-COV-2 virus obtained from a naso-pharyngeal swab performed within 48 hours prior to departure to Sint Maarten”

Traveling to St. Maarten/St. Martin during covid - what to know

I had several people message me on Instagram worried about timing everything right (getting the negative covid test in time and then applying). I was worried about it as well, but it ended up being simple! We did a PCR test at CVS 4 days before and got the results the next day. As soon as we got the results we applied and uploaded the negative test. Within a couple of hours, we were approved and good to go!

I know it seems a little daunting, so please feel free to message me if you have any questions!

Are there border crossings on St. Maarten between the Dutch and French side?

Nope! The island has open borders between the Dutch and French sides. You will go through customs upon arriving in St. Maarten but will not have to do any kind of customs or passport check driving from one side of the island to the other!

If you leave the island and take a day trip to Antigua or another neighboring island, you will have to go through customs coming back.

Is Traveling to St. Maarten + St. Martin safe?

We felt very safe on the island! Of course, always be cautious when traveling, but we felt very safe and comfortable while exploring the island.

What language is spoken in St. Maarten + St. Martin?

English is the most widely spoken language in St. Maarten, especially on the Dutch side. However, on the French side of the island, you will hear a lot of French being spoken too.

What currency is used in St. Maarten + St. Martin?

The official currencies are the euro on the French side and the Netherlands Antillean guilder on the Dutch side, but most anywhere will accept American dollars – it’s usually preferred!

Traveling to St. Maarten + St. Martin: How to Get Around the Island

If you want to explore around the island, my advice would be to rent a car. We rented one from AVIS near the airport for a couple of days, and it was a blast driving around!

There are taxis available to take you from place to place, however they are a little pricey. There are no Ubers or rideshare companies on the island.

One of our favorite destinations at The Points Guy is St Martin/Sint Maarten which has updated its health and safety guidelines along with COVID-19 vaccination requirements for travelers.

We mostly love St Martin because of the incredible plane-spotting opportunities at Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM). Well, that and the beaches. You can literally sit on a beach or at the famous Sunset Bar and Grill and watch planes land over your head at Maho Beach.

What you need to visit St. Martin/ St. Maarten

Starting on Nov. 1, all travelers who are fully vaccinated will be exempted from a COVID-19 test, according to St Martin's Tourism Board . The completed vaccination date cannot be older than one year unless a booster shot has been administered before the ending of the year.

According to the tourism site, all inbound travelers are expected to adhere to the following safety measures that the local government is instituting:

Beginning on Nov. 1, 2021, all children five years of age or older are required to have a negative COVID-19 test in accordance with the required type of test for the risk status of the country of origin.
There is a mandatory health authorization application through an Electronic Health Authorization System (EHAS) for every visitor arriving by air including transits, Sint Maarten and St. Martin residents. Without the health pre-authorization, boarding will not be possible. Processing time can take up to 12 hours.
Travel insurance — all visitors must buy mandatory COVID-19 health insurance prior to travel ( https://www.sxmprotectionplan.com )

What's open?

St. Martin no longer has a curfew in place, it was lifted back in June. Most hotels and attractions are open again. The French side of the island (St. Martin) is no longer banning cross-border travel to visitors to and from the Dutch side (Sint Maarten) as it did in 2020 at the height of pandemic concerns. The two countries share the island.

From sailing and island tours to day trips that include snorkeling and jet skiing, most restaurants, shops and attractions are open for visitors, as regular safety measures of masking up and sanitizing stay in place.

How to get there

Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines, JetBlue and Spirit Airlines all have service to Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM).

American Airlines flies to SXM out of Miami (MIA), Charlotte (CTL) and Dallas (DFW). Delta flies out of Atlanta (ATL) and New York (JFK). JetBlue flies out of Boston (BOS) and Newark (EWR). Spirit flies direct from Fort Lauderdale(FLL). And United flies from Washington/Dulles and Chicago (ORD).

A direct one-way flight from New York on Delta on Jan. 10 started at $123 for basic economy and ranged from $168 for main cabin and $257 for Delta Comfort+. First-class seats are $919. Using SkyMiles would cost you between 8,000-12,000 miles for basic economy and main cabin seats and 20,000 miles plus $6 in taxes and fees in Comfort Plus. First class would be 87,500 Delta SkyMiles plus $6 in taxes and fees.

American has one-stop flights in January from Dallas (DFW) at $269 for basic economy and $310 for main cabin seats with layover options in Miami and Charlotte.

JetBlue has one-way flights from Boston (BOS) to SXM on Jan.3 from $230 to $270 for Blue Basic seats and upwards of $308 for Blue seats, $358 for Blue Extra and $501 for business class seating. There are layover options in New York and Fort Lauderdale.

The cheapest seats seem to come from Spirit out of Fort Lauderdale in mid-January 2022 for $45.29 one-way (before any add-ons).

Where to Stay

The Sonesta Ocean Point Resort is literally down the street from the airport, but it's pricey at $561/night in the first week of January 2022. There are more reasonable options such as Divi Little Bay Beach Resort starting at $249 a night and the Sonesta Maho Beach All Inclusive Resort Casino & Spa has rates starting at $215/night in January. It's a short walk to Maho Beach or you can do plane-spotting from your hotel room — that's how close it is to the airport.

There's not a ton of traditional points hotels on this island paradise. If you are paying cash, you could also definitely use the travel credit extended until the end of this year from the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Upon arrival in Sint Maarten, you must have:

a U.S. passport valid for the duration of your stay;
a completed Embarkation and Disembarkation Card (ED-Card). You can complete the ED-Card on the airplane en route to Sint Maarten or in advance by using ED-Card Online. Contact the ambassy for more information.
a return or onward ticket;
proof of accommodations (hotel reservation, property ownership, or the address of a family member or friend if you are not staying at a hotel); and
proof of sufficient funds to cover expenses during your stay or valid credit card.

U.S. citizens are allowed to stay in Sint Maarten for a maximum of six months with the possibility to extend. Safety and Security

Crime: Crimes of opportunity, such as pickpockets and purse snatching particularly at beaches, hotel lobbies, or from cars are common. Accordingly,

Be aware of your surroundings and take precautions to secure personal property.
Do not leave valuables in cars in plain view or unattended in unsecured hotel rooms and rental homes.
Avoid withdrawing cash from ATMs after dark and walking in poorly-lit areas.
Keep a copy of your valid U.S. passport in a secure location in case your passport is stolen.

Be sure you are sufficiently insured when renting vehicles, jet skis, and other equipment. Theft of rental cars can occur, and damages may not be fully covered by local insurance when a vehicle is stolen.

Parents of young travelers should be aware that the legal drinking age of 18 is not always enforced. Extra parental supervision may be appropriate. Take standard precautions when frequenting nightclubs and bars. Travel in pairs or groups and, if you consume alcohol, do so responsibly. Do not leave your drink unattended or accept open containers from strangers. If you are a victim of a crime, report it immediately to Sint Maarten police (dial 911) and the U.S. Consulate.

Watersports Advisory: Be aware of the risks of recreational water activities. Never venture out alone, particularly at isolated beaches or far out to sea. Avoid entering the water above your waist if you have been drinking and always be mindful of watercraft traffic in the area. When in doubt, stay out!

Do not attempt to experience the jet blast of approaching and departing aircraft at Maho Beach, which can result in serious injury or death.

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy for assistance.

Tourism: The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, basic emergency medical treatment is widely available throughout the country. Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. Critical injuries often require medical evacuation .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business..

Sint Maarten’s enforcement policy concerning drug possession differs significantly from the Netherlands. In Sint Maarten, laws against possession of controlled substances are enforced rigorously, including against tourists in possession of marijuana for personal use.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Consulate immediately. See our webpage for further information.

Local law is based on Dutch law, which allows for the detention of subjects during an investigation with the approval of a judge. Persons imprisoned in Sint Maarten do not have the option of posting bond for their release.

Dual Nationality: Dutch law, in principle, does not permit dual nationality. However, there are exceptions to this rule. For detailed information, contact the The Netherlands Embassy in Washington, DC, or one of the Dutch Consulates in the United States.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. LGBTQI+ Travelers: There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTQI+ events in Sint Maarten.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance: While in Curaçao, individuals with disabilities may find accessibility and accommodation very different than in the United States. Sidewalks and crossings in many areas are not wheelchair accessible, and many buildings lack ramps.

Travelers with Disabilities: The law in the Dutch Caribbean prohibits discrimination against persons with physical, sensory, intellectual or mental disabilities, and the law is enforced. Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is as prevalent as in the United States. The most common types of accessibility may include accessible facilities, information, and communication/access to services/ease of movement or access. However, accessibility may be limited in some lodgings and general infrastructure. Sidewalks and street crossings in many areas are not wheelchair accessible. Many buildings lack ramps.

Access to quality medical care is limited in Sint Maarten. Facilities may not meet U.S. standards. There is one hospital on the Dutch Side, St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC), which offers 24-hour emergency services.

A list of medical facilities in Sint Maarten is available on our Consulate website. We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Many medical specialties are unavailable in Sint Maarten. Critically ill patients must often be transferred to neighboring countries or to the United States.

There is no decompression chamber in Sint Maarten.

Ambulance services are widely available.

We do not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance coverage. Medicines : If traveling with prescription medication, check with the Government of Sint Maarten to ensure the medication is legal in Sint Maarten. Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription.

Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Chikungunya

Use the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended mosquito repellents and sleep under insecticide-impregnated mosquito nets. Chemoprophylaxis is recommended for all travelers even for short stays.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety: Sint Maarten’s main roads are narrow and dimly lit. Driving at night is reasonably safe, as long as drivers are familiar with the route and road conditions. Proceed through intersections with caution.

Traffic Laws: Vehicles operate on the right-hand side in Sint Maarten. You can drive in Sint Maarten with a valid U.S. driver’s license. Right turns at red lights are prohibited. There are no border controls separating the Dutch and French sides of the island. Cars pass freely without stopping. Driving while intoxicated may result in the loss of a driver’s license, fine, and imprisonment.

Public Transportation: Taxis are unmetered. Passengers should determine the price in advance. Rental car agencies are located near the Princess Juliana International Airport. Be sure you are sufficiently insured. Ask your car rental agency for instructions in case of an accident.

Maritime Travel: Mariners planning travel to Sint Maarten must have completed a Customs Form 1300, Vessel Entrance or Clearance Statement declaring their intention to travel to Sint Maarten prior to their departure from the U.S. port. Mariners failing to fill out and submit this form will be denied entry to Sint Maarten’s ports. Mariners planning travel to Sint Maarten should also check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . 20 Best Things to Do in Saint Martin, From Sailing Excursions to the World's Steepest Zip Line

Local experts weigh in on how to explore the Caribbean island.

Known as "The Friendly Island," beachy and beautiful Saint Martin is comprised of two countries: Dutch Sint Maarten to the south, and French Saint-Martin in the north. As neighbors, the two countries offer a unique mix of cultural and historical influences in one effusively hospitable destination. Long a favorite with sun-seekers, St. Martin is among the most accessible Caribbean islands for travelers from North America. Numerous daily flights from across the region also make St. Martin a stopover for people headed to popular Anguilla and hidden gems like Saba and Sint Eustatius.

Whether you're staying at a villa or all-inclusive resort on St. Martin, or the island is just one stop on a larger Caribbean adventure, this destination has plenty to offer. We tapped local experts like Marla Chemont of the St. Maarten Tourism Bureau, Sylvie Baron of Dream Yacht Worldwide, and Jamie Lee of Sonesta St. Maarten Resorts to craft a list of experiences not to be missed in St. Martin.

Visit Maho Beach.

Dubbed "the most extreme beach in the world," Maho Beach offers white sands and breathtaking views of jets coming and going from the island's Princess Juliana International Airport, which is set just beyond the beachfront. Jamie Lee, vice president of resort operations at Sonesta St. Maarten Resorts, calls the beach a must for island visitors. Guests at the family-centric Sonesta Maho Beach Resort, Casino & Spa and the adults-only Sonesta Ocean Point Resort have access to the beloved beach.

Explore Philipsburg.

Philipsburg is the capital of the island's Dutch side, and it's a charming town worthy of exploration. "Stroll the scenic boardwalk while enjoying views of the stunning blue sea, shop along the main street and indulge in fresh Caribbean cooking at one of the many eateries, and explore the town's luxury jewelry boutiques," says Michele Bayens of onefinestay . The company offers more than 100 villas on both the French and Dutch sides of the island, and the rentals are an increasingly popular accommodation option for travelers.

Visit a few more of St. Martin’s beaches.

If plane spotting on Maho Beach isn't quite your speed, you can visit any of the island's other 36 beaches for a more tranquil day by the waves. Bayens recommends the golden sands of Cupecoy Beach for both snorkeling and relaxing on the shore, while Marla Chemont of the St. Maarten Tourism Bureau recommends Happy Bay Beach for a slightly less crowded experience. Sip rum at Topper's Rhum Distillery.

What would a trip to the Caribbean be without sampling local rum? Bayens recommends visiting Topper's Rhum Distillery near Simpson Bay Beach to sample unique flavors and learn about the blending process. Tour the distillery and mixing labs, or drop by the showroom to pick up a bottle to take home.

Sail to neighboring islands.

"If you come to St. Martin, don't miss out on going to Anguilla, St. Barts, and Saba," says Sylvie Baron of Dream Yacht Worldwide , an outfit that offers charters and cabin cruises from their base on St. Martin's French side. The white-sand beaches of Anguilla are accessible on half-day sailings. For luxe shopping on St. Barts or rainforest hikes on Saba, considering booking a day trip.

Baron also recommends sailing to the deserted island of Tintamarre. "In the natural reserve on Tintamarre island, people can go snorkeling directly from the beach," Baron says. Visitors can also scuba dive here, or "hike on the island and discover traces of its past."

For a more hands-on sailing experience in St. Martin, Chemont recommends connecting with 12 Metre Racing . The outfitter offers "sailing experiences on vintage sailing yachts that are past America's Cup winners and participants. Guests can learn the basics of sailing firsthand as they enjoy time on the water."

Dance to live music at 978 Sanctorum.

Located in Rambaud on St. Martin's French side, 978 Sanctorum is "one of the best parties on the island," according to long-time local Riselle Roidis-Celestina . Jazzy Fridays and Caribbean Saturdays are popular poolside gatherings with live music, while the Sunday Creole Brunch provides a little hair of the dog alongside locally-inspired bites.

Hike to Pic Paradis.

At nearly 1,400 feet in elevation, Pic Paradis is St. Martin's highest point, and as such it offers expansive vistas of the island. The 3.1-mile, out-and-back hike to the summit is surprisingly challenging, especially in the heat of a Caribbean afternoon, but it usually takes most trekkers less than three hours to complete. Or, opt to hang out at La Villa Hibiscus instead, located in the peak's shadow but still a great place to take in the view. French-trained chef and owner Bastien Schenk offers "a daily tasting menu worthy of the finest cosmopolitan comparisons," reports Brad Japhe for T+L .

Explore St. Martin's cuisine at The Flavor Academy.

An impressive array of influences has made St. Martin a Caribbean culinary capital , and The Flavor Academy is a top place to experience this for yourself. Set in the home of local and award-winning culinary duo Kristin Joseph and Paul Peterson, The Flavor Academy offers cooking and mixology workshops and dining experiences that highlight the best flavors of the island. Travelers should be sure to book their visit ahead of time.

Dive with sharks at Big Mama's Reef.

Caribbean reef sharks naturally congregate around Big Mama's Reef, which you'll find off the coast of the island's Dutch side. This is a prime destination for adventure-minded travelers looking for a thrilling wildlife encounter. While shark diving adventures elsewhere tend to be reserved for more experienced divers, even beginners can enjoy this one.

Enjoy watersports on Orient Bay.

Baron recommends Orient Bay on the island's French side as the perfect beach destination for those looking to enjoy almost any watersport imaginable. Expect jet-ski rentals, as well as parasailing, snorkeling, windsurfing, kayaking, and kitesurfing opportunities. Bikini Watersport , located on the beachfront, offers all kinds of rentals, plus fishing charters and catamaran excursions.

Take the ferry to Pinel Island.

Just a five-minute jaunt from St. Martin, "Pinel Island is a small desert island, with two restaurants where you can taste delicious lobster fresh from the grill," says Baron. The island is a popular stop with private sailing charters and group excursions, but it's also accessible by ferry from Cul-de-Sac on the French side of the island, and they depart every 30 minutes during high season.

Eat authentic French cuisine.

St. Martin's French influence makes the island one of the best spots in the Caribbean to sample French cuisine. Local experts recommend venues like Le Cottage, L'Atelier Bar à Viande et Poisson, and L'Astrolabe. Or, try a Caribbean take on French favorites; for that, Bayens suggests Mario Bistrot , "a fine-dining spot in Cupecoy Bay which offers a delectable menu of traditional French cuisine with a Caribbean and Asian twist."

Visit David's Hole.

David's Hole is ideal for travelers looking for a more off-the-beaten-path destination on the island. Over thousands of years, this collapsed sea cave has been eroded into two arches by the force of ocean swells. When the sea is rough, it looks like a boiling cauldron, inspiring its alternative name: Devil's Hole.

Zip line through the rainforest at Loterie Farm.

Private nature reserve Loterie Farm is one of the best places on St. Martin to enjoy the island's rich, forested interior. The reserve has its own zip-lining course amidst a canopy of mango and mahogany trees and is the starting point for the trek to the summit of Pic Paradis. For a more relaxing experience, opt for drinks at the location’s "jungle pool" or a snack at the onsite restaurant.

Take a cultural heritage tour.

Chemont recommends exploring St. Martin with the experts at Seagrape Tours , noting that the operator's cultural heritage tours cross St. Martin's international border to offer an in-depth introduction to the historical sites on the entire island. There are also specialized foodie tours, street art tours, and even cheese tours, if you're looking to experience the island's culinary and cultural riches.

Visit Parotte Ville.

With around 25 species of tropical birds in residence, Parotte Ville is a family-friendly destination on the island's Dutch side. Parotte Ville founder George Parotte is himself a colorful character, passionate about introducing visitors to the 170 birds found at the sanctuary.

St. Martin is a melting pot of culinary traditions, but "visitors have to try the truly local dishes from food trucks or roadside rib shacks that exemplify the island," says Chemont. "Stop at a roadside spot for delicious barbecue, like barbequed chicken, lobster, or ribs with a fried Johnny Cake." Lee also recommends trying the "local, island-made national drink, guava berry liquor, made from a tiny red berry that is indigenous to the islands."

Dive at a shipwreck site.

There are a number of shipwrecks that make for impressive dive sites around the island, though the Carib Cargo wreck is perhaps the island’s best known. Steeped in local lore and alternatively known as the Carib Ghost, this wreck site is home to stingrays, green turtles, and lobsters. Or, dive directly off the beachfront at Little Bay Beach, where a sunken helicopter, cannons, and a submarine are accessible even for snorkelers.

Ride a chairlift to Sentry Hill.

Known as the Soualiga Sky Explorer, this chairlift carries passengers up to one of the island's highest peaks. Unbeatable ocean views (without the strenuous trek) await, as do zip lines and more. Select packages include a ride on the Flying Dutchman, a 2,800-foot-long zip line that drops you 1,050 feet in elevation — it's the steepest zip line in the world.

What Are the Travel Requirements of Sint Maarten?

The travel requirements to be able to enter onto the island of Sint Maarten are; a valid passport from your country of citizenship, an onward travel ticket, an embarkation and a disembarkation card (ED card), proof of accommodations, proof of sufficient funds. Because of COVID-19 it was also neccesary until November 1st, 2022 to fill out an Electronic Health Authorization System (EHAS) application form , but that’s NOT NEEDED anymore te enter the island of Sint Maarten.

When/if the EHAS is pre-approved, travelers will receive a printable pre-authorization PDF via email. This electronic document must be presented at check-in to the health and immigration authorities upon arrival. This PDF will also contain a QR code that will show each traveler’s vaccination status and COVID-19 test result when scanned. This 5-star beach resort offers cabana rental and provides complimentary use of non-motorized water sports equipment such as double kayaks, hobby cats, and snorkel gear. The resort has a pool, spa, tennis courts with a resident tennis pro who offers lessons, and a fitness center offering yoga and Pilates. The concierge is available to arrange activities such as a champagne sunset cruise. This island of many names is known to me as “The Island We Were Supposed to Honeymoon On”! Many years ago, we’d made plans to spend several days in St. Martin when my (now ex) husband and I were to be married. Long story short, our circumstances changed and we instead spent the night in Boston at a luxury hotel. That was lovely, however, it can’t compare to St. Martin! Your post reminds me of all the good reasons to visit this beautiful destination. Thanks for the inspiration to visit solo, soon!

Seems like a really interesting place with many different cultural / language influences from the UK, Netherlands, France, and Spain! The landscapes and seascapes look spectacular and good to know a car rental is a good way to travel, as that’s a favourite for us. I’ll look out for that guavaberry liqueur!

Here’s my comment: It’s fascinating. It is geographically close to America, but it belongs to France & Netherlands. So they use both Euro & USD! It’s so tiny and still owned by 2 countries! It’s intriguing. Indeed it is a bit like Belgium which is also half Dutch & half French. It is considered the Culinary Capital of the Caribbean? Wow. That’s promising. Yoda guy movie exhibit sounds interesting. I really wouldn’t miss the guavaberry-flavored rum!

St Maarten and St Martin although similar sounding seem quite different. A very nice guide detailing all possible thoughts. While in St Maarten sampling a few of the 50+ flavors of rum would be really nice since I used to be a rum drinker in my younger days. Checking out the mega-yachts of Simpson Bay lagoon should be fun as well. Wouldn’t mind checking out the nudist resort Club Orient. Watching the view from Pic Paradis and exploring Fort Louis should be a good experience in St Martin.

The Ultimate St. Martin Travel Guide

When it came to where to vacation in the Caribbean this spring , my husband and I decided on St. Martin. We were looking for something easy to get to from the states, with a gorgeous hotel that we could post up at for some much needed R&R. We were also looking for something baby-friendly, since we wanted to bring our little 11-month-old boy along, too! St. Martin turned out to be the best getaway for our little family. Only a few hours away from Miami, it’s an easy one stop from most places in the USA, or a direct from the big airports! The hotel we chose was absolutely UNREAL (I get into that more below) and we couldn’t have asked for better weather. It definitely won’t be our last time in St. Martin!! Whether you’re traveling to St. Martin on a romantic getaway as a couple, as a family on a family vacation , or as a group on an adult spring break , here are all of my tips to make sure you have the best trip to St. Martin, from where to stay, to what to eat, what to do, the best beaches, beach clubs, and more.

Where to stay in St. Martin

The jetset pick: belmond la samanna .

The Belmond La Samanna is the nicest resort on St. Martin. It was built to feel like Greece, but in the tropics, and is characterized by gorgeous Mediterranean architecture and lush tropical foliage, with colorful details and bouganvillea that makes you feel like you’re somewhere between Italy and Greece. Belmond never misses, and La Samanna is one of their best resorts. It’s exclusive and boasts one of the best beaches in St. Martin, or even the entire Caribbean, on Baie Longue. There are 83 beautifully-decorated ocean-view guest rooms, suites, and multi-bedroom villas, and all of the facilities here are colorful, chic, tropical, and make for an absolutely perfect Caribbean vacation.

We stayed in a oceanview suite with terrace . All of the rooms at La Samanna, A Belmond Hotel, St Martin have stunning private balconies and some even have a plunge pool. I don’t think it’s necessary, however, since the beach is right there! And the main pools on property are SO beautiful (and kid-friendly!).

What is the best time of year to visit St. Martin?

We traveled to St. Martin in May, which we found to be absolutely perfect weather. The best time to visit is the shoulder season between high season (December through April) and the hurricane season which starts in June/July and goes until November.

How long does it take to get to St. Martin?

It’s a four hour direct flight from JFK, a 4 hour from Charlotte, or a 3 hour flight from Miami.

Is St. Martin safe?

We found St. Martin to be very safe, it’s known as the friendly island, and you feel that right when you touch down at the airport. It was easy to get a taxi and the taxi operators were the best ambassadors for their friendly island! They were awesome.

The main tourist areas of St. Martin are generally safe, but you should take sensible precautions as a traveler. Don’t wear too flashy of belongings while walking around in public places, etc.

Is St. Martin baby-friendly?

Yes! St. Martin is one of the most kid-friendly destinations in the Caribbean, and a great destination to travel with little ones due to its calm beaches, soft sand, kid-friendly restaurants, and warm weather (we also didn’t experience any wind on the beach – at least in May – like we did when were in Anguilla in March!) We had the best time in St. Martin traveling with our baby. The hotel ( Belmond La Samanna ) felt extremely safe and easy to navigate with a baby!

What to do in St. Martin

Pinel Island – Head to the Yellow Beach Beach Club: get the lobster fresh from the ocean! SO GOOD!

Mullet Bay is a secluded and spacious beach on St. Martin. You can rent chairs and umbrellas from the snack bars on the south side, or go to the secluded northern end for a little privacy. I’d recommend getting a reservation ahead of time at Kalatua Beach Club.

Mykonos Club

If you’re looking for an outdoor party scene, or visiting on a holiday like New Years Eve, this is your spot. Mykonos is set amongst the crashing waves and incoming planes on the shore of Maho Beach. The focal point of the club is their zero-entry pool making every night feel like the ultimate pool party.

You’ve probably seen videos of Maho Beach when looking up St. Martin. Maho is a unique beach in St. Maarten, where travelers flock to experience the thrilling rush of airplanes flying extremely close over your head! The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge , a major transportation link in the Baltimore area, sparked a massive search and rescue effort early Tuesday morning.

The bridge has been a critical transportation passageway along the East Coast for decades. Video captured the collapse , after Singapore-flagged container ship, the Dali, collided with one of the bridge's pillars.

The ship had caught fire, and several vehicles fell into the river below.

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge located?

The bridge crosses over the Patapsco River on I-695 and is the final link on the Baltimore Beltway, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority .

It is the outermost of the three tollways that cross Baltimore's Harbor.

How long is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The 4-lane bridge structure alone is 1.6 miles long. The facility also includes the Curtis Creek Drawbridge. Including approach roadways, the entire stretch is around 10.9 miles long, MDTA said.

Why did a ship hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The ship, a container vessel chartered by Maersk, apparently lost power a few minutes before striking the bridge, a senior U.S. official told USA TODAY .

No Maersk crew or personnel were onboard the vessel when it struck the bridge, according to a statement from the company. It was operated by a charter company, Synergy Group, and owned by Grace Ocean Pte., based in Singapore, and ultimately bound for Sri Lanka.

Accidents like this, called Marine casualties, are not uncommon, the official told USA TODAY, with an allision (an immobile object being struck by a ship) occurring about every 10 years or so. Investigators will likely look into the cause of the power outage and whether there was a mechanical failure on the ship.

How to travel around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore: A look at the traffic impact and alternate routes

BALTIMORE -- The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday led to a major traffic impact for the region and cut off a major artery into and out of the port city.

A bridge column was hit by a large container ship around 1:30 a.m., sending bridge workers and vehicles into the Patapsco River. A water search for six missing workers turned to a recovery effort Tuesday night.

Drivers are told to prepare for extra commuting time until further notice.

Alternate routes after Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

Maryland transit authorities quickly put detours in place for those traveling through Dundalk or the Curtis Bay/Hawkins Point side of the bridge. The estimated 31,000 who travel the bridge every day will need to find a new route for the foreseeable future.

The outer loop I-695 closure shifted to exit 1/Quarantine Road (past the Curtis Creek Drawbridge) to allow for enhanced local traffic access.

The inner loop of I-695 remains closed at MD 157 (Peninsula Expressway). Additionally, the ramp from MD 157 to the inner loop of I-695 will be closed.

Alternate routes are I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or I-895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) for north/south routes.

Commercial vehicles carrying materials that are prohibited in the tunnel crossings, including recreation vehicles carrying propane, should plan on using I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between Essex and Glen Burnie. This will add significant driving time.

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The Key Bridge crosses the Patapsco River, a key waterway that along with the Port of Baltimore serves as a hub for East Coast shipping.

The bridge is the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor and the final link in Interstate 695, known in the region as the Baltimore Beltway, which links Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

The bridge was built after the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel reached capacity and experienced heavy congestion almost daily, according to the MDTA.

Tractor-trailer inspections

Tractor-trailers that now have clearance to use the tunnels will need to be checked for hazardous materials, which are not permitted in tunnels, and that could further hold up traffic.

The MDTA says vehicles carrying bottled propane gas over 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895).

Any vehicles transporting hazardous materials should use the western section of I-695 around the tunnels, officials said.

Superintendent says Martin County High School swimming pool to stay open for 2024-2025

M ARTIN COUNTY — The Martin County High School swimming pool will stay open, at least through next school year, school Superintendent Michael Maine told TCPalm Thursday.

Status of the aquatic center, named in 2014 as the Coach Dick Wells Training Center, had been the subject of community concern for the past month after district officials expressed worry over the $1.2 million in repairs needed for the nearly 50-year-old facility.

Last week, students pleaded with the School Board to keep the pool open. Those students played a big part in Maine's decision to keep the pool open, he said.

"We're in the business of educating students. I was proud of them for coming forward," he said. "The students were very passionate (about keeping the pool open)."

Among the students speaking at last week's board meeting was Martin County High School senior Cutter Shipman, who said his training at the pool and the coaching staff helped him receive a swimming scholarship at a Division I college. He also competed at the state swimming championships.

"I stand for the survival of the pool," Shipman told the School Board. "My teammates and I have trained here for many years, striving for our goal, many of us practicing multiple times per day to achieve it."

Shipman said he wanted other students to have the same chance he had.

"Our pool is essential for that," he said.

The pool has helped student Manuel Gonzalez achieve more than just learning to swim fast, he told the board. Gonzalez' behavior and grades also improved when he became involved with swimming, he said.

"7,488 hours. That is the number of hours that I have swum at the Martin County High School pool. That is twice a day, six hours a week, all year round for the last eight years," Gonzalez said. "To me, swimming is more than just a sport. I have tried other sports, but nothing gave me the confidence swimming has."

Martin County High's swimming and diving teams use the pool for practices and competition in the fall. Most of its use, though, is from the Martin County Swim Club, which has many public school students as members. The pool is used by the public in the mornings, afternoons and on weekends, district spokeswoman Jennifer DeShazo said.

South Fork and Jensen Beach high schools have no pools, and their swimming teams use the county-owned Sailfish Splash Waterpark in Stuart.

Over the next year, Maine plans to consult with district officials about the repairs and determine what needs to be done immediately. At some point, a decision needs to be made on whether to make the repairs — which include replacing pool heaters and repairing cracks and liners — or permanently close the pool, he said.

Martin County High School pool saved from the chopping block as School Board eyes budget cuts

"We will use that year to make the decision for 2025-2026," he said.

The district last tried to close the pool in 2018, citing high operating and maintenance costs as well as security concerns. After more than 50 people pleaded with the School Board to keep the pool open, the School Board agreed. At the time, the pool was costing almost $155,000 a year to operate, and receiving just $16,250 annually in revenue from Martin County Swimming Inc.

What we know about Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed early Tuesday after being hit by a cargo ship, with large parts of the bridge falling into the Patapsco River.

At least eight people fell into the water, members of a construction crew working on the bridge at the time, officials said. Two were rescued, one uninjured and one in serious condition, and two bodies were recovered on Wednesday. The remaining four are presumed dead. The workers are believed to be the only victims in the disaster.

Martin Dentistry Athlete of the Week: St. Mary's Brayden Wilson

San Joaquin County voted and the Martin Dentistry Athlete of the Week for the week of March 18-24 is Brayden Wilson of St. Mary's baseball. In an online poll that closed on Friday, Wilson received close to 56% of votes cast for a total of 258 votes.

The senior outfielder earned this recognition after coming through clutch for the Rams in their non-league matchup against Turlock. He led his team to a 9-0 victory hitting a home run, three RBIs, and reeling in one run. Wilson is a consistent slugger for St. Mary's as he has the team's second-highest batting average of .370 and the highest on-base percentage of 48.6%.

With Wilson and a host of other big-time sluggers, the Rams are currently ranked second in the Sac-Joaquin Section and hold an overall record of 8-3. Since the Turlock game on March 19, they have picked up wins against Archbishop Mitty and Casa Grande. Against Casa Grande, Wilson finished the game with two hits, a double, and one run helping St. Mary's to a 10-0 victory.

Original story: The Record is back in search of the standout high school athlete hailing from the 209 for the week of March 18-24.

Spring sports are in full swing here in San Joaquin County, and teams are already wrapping up preseason competition. Some teams have faced league foes already sparking old rivalries early on in the season. No matter the opponent, these six athletes shined in their respective sports to bring home a dub.

The poll will include athletes from the following spring sports: softball, baseball, boys’ volleyball, as well as track and field. The poll can be found at the bottom of the story and closes on Friday.

Here are the candidates for March 18-24 (athletes listed in alphabetical order):

Owen Altadonna, boys’ volleyball, Sierra: Sierra took on Lathrop on March 22 and the Spartans put up a good fight but Altadonna would not be denied. The junior middle hitter led the Timberwolves with a team-high 15 kills while hitting over 50%. He helped Sierra take the match 3-1.

Maggie Goodfellow, softball, Tracy: The Bulldogs took on Tri-City Athletic League rivals St. Mary’s on March 21 and Goodfellow came through big time for them. The senior finished the night with four RBIs and two hits leading her team to a 5-1 victory. Tracy is now ranked second in the Sac-Joaquin Section.

Shayne Harris, track and field, Edison: Harris could not be beaten during the 11th Annual Eddie Hart Invitational meet on March 16. She took home gold in the 100-meter and 200-meter races beating out over 40 other runners. Harris set a personal record in the 200-meter race with a time of 24.69 seconds.

Adonis Siga, track and field, Lathrop: At the County Splash meet on March 22, Siga shined in the hurdling events for the Spartans. He took home gold in the 100-meter with a time of 14.75 seconds. He snagged another first-place finish in the 300-meter hurdle race with a time of 38.99 seconds.

Nayellys Torres, softball, Manteca: Torres wasn’t phased when up against a fiery offense like Kimball’s on March 21. She held the Jaguars to just three runs in the game and picked up five strikeouts in the process. Her clutch performance on the mound helped Manteca beat Kimball 7-3.

Brayden Wilson, baseball, St. Mary’s: The Rams had their way against familiar foe Folsom on March 19. Wilson was the catalyst with his clutch at-bats, one of them ending in a deep shot over the gate for a home run. He led St. Mary’s offensively to a 9-0 shutout victory over the Bulldogs.

MnDOT to host two public open houses for Highway 4 Sherburn to St. James project

MANKATO, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation is holding two construction open houses for a project on Highway 4 from Sherburn to St. James in preparation of construction expected to begin in late April, weather permitting. The public is invited to attend in Trimont on Tuesday, April 9 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Triumph Hall, 546 Main Street E, or in Sherburn on Thursday, April 11 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Senior Dining Center, 21 East 1st Street.

Staff from MnDOT and the contractor will be available to provide more information about the project and answer questions. There is no formal presentation planned, and attendees are welcome to arrive anytime.

The Highway 4 project between Sherburn and St. James includes roadway, bridge, and drainage improvements. In addition to resurfacing approximately 25 miles of roadway, the bridge over Cedar Run will be replaced and multiple bridges will be repaired. Pedestrian accommodations in the cities of Sherburn and Trimont will also be improved. Construction on the project is expected to begin in late April and continue until late August, weather permitting. Traffic will be detoured during construction. St Maarten / St Martin are semi-autonomous bodies within the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the French Republic. Dutch side (St Maarten) autonomy is greater than the French side: whereas French side St Martin is a special community, Dutch side St Maarten has become an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands as of October 10th 2010; previously she formed part of the Netherlands Antilles. Though by means a referendum Dutch side St Maarten chose this type of constitution for now, both sides of the island stand free to expand their degrees of independence from their European counterparts at any time – or to the contrary, connect even further.

St Maarten is a compact island allowing, in theory, to walk around the entire island within a day. However, because of our tropical weather climate we would not advise this as heat and dehydration are serious risks during a full day of soaking up Caribbean sun whilst walking. Our advise would be to explore the most beautiful hiking trails on island, and explore the island bit by bit, day by day with great excursions !

The rainy season runs from fall to spring, making this the best time to visit our island as temperatures drop accordingly. As St Maarten / St Martin is a tropical destination, you will welcome some refreshing days with drops of rain in this timeframe. Nobody on island would ever call this a “rainy season” though – chances are negligible you will have a lot of rain during your stay. Originally, our island did not have monkeys for centuries – until hurricane Luis damaged our zoo in 1995. Some vervet monkeys escaped and reproduced, especially around the Pointe Blanche area. On parts other than the southeastern coast, you are unlikely to meet one. In general they are friendly but smart – so keep food wrapped or in closed boxes when outside.

Dutch side St Maarten and French side St Martin boast the longest open border in the world . Chances are you will not notice traveling over one of the four border crossings except for a friendly sign “Welcome to the Dutch / French side” ! Both sides accept dollars.

Like any destination in the tropics, St Maarten has mosquitoes. As you are prone to be around sea and on or near our 37 beaches , they wont be a great nuisance. Most bars/nightlife and restaurants have repellant behind the counter. So should you run into one, just ask for it! Even better: visit the local lab of St Maarten Nectar , a proven island export product able to prevent bites better than many of its counterparts! Also, enjoy their cosmetics & spa!

St Maarten is one of the safest destinations of the Caribbean, and is acknowledged as such by various travel experts. During the day especially, crime is negigible. See our advice on where to go when at night.

St Maarten / St Martin has 37 beaches and many areas with a wholly different character. Areas like Simpson Bay at night and Philipsburg (when ships are in) can appear crowded at times, but many villages and beaches can be wholly yours at the same time! You can watch matches of the world championship of football at the AMAsterdam Bar and the Dutch Blonde Beach Bar . Both bars are located in the Philipsburg area of St Maarten / St Martin .

On St Maarten / St Martin, English is the standard language because of historical reasons. On the French side , French is ubiquitous too. Also, Spanish is heard a lot. Some people speak Dutch on the Dutch side, but it is predominantly the legal language only.

Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) is on the Dutch side of St Maarten / St Martin .

On Dutch side St Maarten, it is not advised to drink tapwater as is the case with many countries around the equator. Both hotels and supermarkets are always able to provide fresh bottled water.

St Maarten is located in the middle of the Caribbean region; right where the chain of islands changes course from due east to due south seen from a north American perspective.

If St Martin airport is to be taken literally, this would mean L’Esperance or Grand Case Airport (SFG). The vast majority of airplanes how ever arrive at its larger Dutch side airport Princess Juliana Airport (SXM) .

St Maarten’s Dutch side boasts two world famous rums. Guavaberry made it to become an official Disneyland Japan Pirates of the Caribbean rum; Topper’s Rhum won various international prizes. Both export to many countries in the world.

St Martin is mostly known as the (northern) French side of the island, though many use St Martin as the general name for the island of St Maarten / St Martin. See our interactive map for its exact location.

St Maarten’s Princess Juliana Airport (SXM) lies in between of the Simpson Bay and Maho areas of St Maarten.

SXM is the international airport code (ICAO) for Princess Juliana Airport on the Dutch side of the island.

The capital of Dutch side St Maarten is Philipsburg . The capital of French side St Martin is Marigot .

The island of St Maarten / St Martin has two airports. International and regional flights mostly come in at Princess Juliana Airport (SXM) à Hub on the Dutch side . Flights from Martinique and Guadeloupe and some other Caribbean destinations also arrive on the smaller Grand Case Airport (SFG).

St Maarten / St Martin is best known for its variety of peoples and cuisines , its green hills hiking and last but not least its beautiful beaches . • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for the surface

• 2 to 4 tablespoons granulated sugar

• 1 tablespoon baking powder

• 1 teaspoon kosher salt

• 2 1 / 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature

• 1 1 / 2 cups vegetable oil, for frying, plus more as needed

1: In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Work in the butter with your fingertips.

2: Add 1 cup of water to the flour mixture and mix with a wooden spoon until smooth.

3: On a lightly floured surface, turn out the dough and knead with your hands, sprinkling the surface with more flour as needed, until smooth and elastic.

4: Place the dough in a clean bowl and cover with a towel. Let rest for at least 30 minutes.

5: After dough has rested, in a large skillet over medium heat, heat the oil.

6: Form small balls of dough with your hands. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough into circles with a rolling pin or the palm of your hand. Be sure to not make them too thin.

7: In a small pot, heat the oil. Fry the dough, adding more oil if needed between batches, until golden brown.

8: Let drain on napkins or paper towels.

All though Johnny is cake is written like this it is often spelled and pronounced different. people may say it as Jonny cake, Johny cakes and johnycakes.

St Maarten is known for its close to 40 beaches , its status as culinary capital of the Caribbean , its large amount of Activities à 1001 experiences , its high Hospitality standards and safety and its diverse culture .

St. Maarten and St. Martin are the same when referring to the island as a whole; more officially the names refer to the two sides of the binational island. St. (Sint) Maarten and St. (Saint) Martin are respectively the Dutch and French names for the same saint St. Martin of Tours whose name Columbus gave to the island as he discovered it on November 11th, the patron’s namesake day. As a predominantly English speaking island, “Saint Martin” is the most common way to describe the island. Amongst local residents on the Dutch side you would find “S’Maatin” as well as a name to call their beloved country.

Another very common way on island to address the island locally is SXM , referring to the flight code of Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA) . Both sides celebrate St. Martin / St. Maarten Day on the 11th of November as one of the most important holidays. The Dutch spelling (Sint Maarten) is best pronounced as “Sint Maahrten” from an English language perspective.

St. Maarten is one of the safest countries in the Caribbean. That does not mean precautions you would normally take in other countries should not be abided to like venturing out at night to unknown and unlit areas.

The island of St Maarten / St Martin has a long history of having many affluent people as its guests. That however does not mean that there are no affordable places to stay on St Maarten. St Maarten is 96 square kilometers or 37 square miles. This surface is divided 57% / 43% between the French and Dutch side; this is roughly the reverse when you would calculate populations of both sides.

Legend has it that the division took place when a Dutchman and a Frenchman were both invited to walk around the island along the seas, and where they would meet again would be the other end of the border. Both were invited to take a drink before they left. Whereas the Frenchman took a glass of wine, the Dutchman chose the (far more alcohol containing) Dutch Jenever (gin) as a drink of choice. This allegedly had direct effect on his speed, and hence the uneven division between both side’s surfaces. Compared to the United States, St. Maarten / St. Martin is about the size of Manhattan. For Dutch Tourists, the island of Terschelling would be an island comparable in size. Within France, the island compares to the size of Ile de Re.

SINT Maarten (Dutch side) is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It shares defense forces and embassies with the Netherlands, Aruba and Curacao; on other policy terrains St. Maarten is a sovereign country. Its legal system is jointly operated with other Dutch Caribbean countries as well as the Netherlands. Its capital is Philipsburg , and its currency is the Netherlands Antillean Guilder NAF. The northern, French side of the island is an overseas collectivity with a semi-autonomous status of France. Its capital is Marigot and its currency is Euro .

St Maarten / St Martin is in the Atlantic time zone (GMT-4). This means it has the same time zone as New York, Washington DC, Miami, Florida, Charleston, Georgia and Virginia. There is an 5 or 6 hours difference with Paris and Amsterdam. This depends on the season.

Sint Maarten / Saint Martin can be found in the northeastern Caribbean, the middle of the Caribbean archipelago, for which the island serves as a hub . The island lies at 18.0708° N, 63.0501° W. The northern part is French , whereas the southern part consists of an autonomous country in the Kingdom of the Netherlands . St. Maarten is a compact country with a large array of shops , electronic stores, pharmacies and supermarkets. That means that much of your needs are readily available on island.

However, some general suggestions: St. Maarten ( Dutch side ) has a 110 volt net, St. Martin (French side) a 220 volt one. So that means that you might want to bring an adapter depending on what side of the island you stay. Low priced adapters however are readily available in Electricity stores. St. Maarten has an agreeable, tropical climate with many beaches , so it is suggested to bring clothes that befit our weather. Mosquitos can occur. You can either bring your own repellant, buy it in supermarkets or visit the shops and factory of our home brew SXM Nectar !

St Maarten has two airports. Its main airport Princess Juliana International Airport ( PJIA ) (flight code SXM) in between of Simpson Bay and Maho on the Dutch side connects St Maarten to all intercontinental flights and most regional ones. On September 6th 2017, St. Maarten / St. Martin was hit by the rarely forceful hurricane Irma, whose “eye” hit the island. All of its room count has since been rebuilt, as has almost all shops and activities . Many entrepreneurs have taken the opportunity to rebuild along our national adage “build back better”; with improved properties and services.

It is important to note that whereas May through November is “hurricane season”, it is unlikely that one occurs – let alone with the force of Irma. Storms are directly spotted and monitored when they gather in the Atlantic Ocean, and their course tracked for weeks. As was the case during Irma, protocols are in place to evacuate and safeguard visitors in case St. Maarten / St. Martin would be in a possible route.

St Maarten / St Martin is one of the largest cruise ports in the world, and ranks number 3 in the Caribbean in volume. The island has been ranked no#1 cruise port by visitors many years in a row over the past decade. Cruise traffic was suspended during the 2020-2021 pandemic, but is expected to pick up halfway 2021.

St. Maarten’s cruise port is within an easy 5 to 10 minute walking distance to Philipsburg . As the Caribbean is known to be tropical climate and some prefer to skip the walk, there is multiple types of transport available to get to “town”, as St Maarteners call it lovingly. Most popular alternative means of transport are the jetty’s to three locations in town, to the (east side) near amongst others the St Maarten museum and Coffee Lounge , a middle one disembarking on Captain Hodge Pier and the landmark Courthouse as depicted on our flag; thirdly to Walter Plantz Square . Also, many excursions leave from the Port itself.
